Community raises funds to fight childhood cancer Hundreds support annual St. Baldricks event

Kindness shines through once again—the annual Bolingbrook 4 Kids St. Baldrick’s event brought

the community together raising more than $125,000 to support cancer research.

Held March 12 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, more than 200 individuals donated to the cause and hundreds came out in support.

Each year community members join the fight against cancer, raising funds by shaving their heads to symbolically connect with those who are battling cancer and to raise funds for cancer research.

From a variety of raffles, Irish dancing and camaraderie, the event brought young and old alike to stand strong and go bald; men and women, boys and girls coming together to join the cause.

Local businesses offered their support including the Bolingbrook Golf Club, Rocket Ice Arena, Nancy’s Pizza, Magnetrol, Weber Irish Dancers, Andy’s Frozen Custard, BD’s Mongolian Grill, Bar Louie, Gordon Bieirsch, and Music Mania.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Participants find that shaving their head in solidarity with the approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in comparison to what these children endure.

St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraiser for childhood cancer research.

Voting guidelines for county, villages

The April 4 consolidation election is gearing up and deadlines are approaching for voters. As of March 13, there are nearly 420,000 Will County residents registered voters and only days remain to register to vote in the April 4 election. In-person registration is now closed, but voters may register online until March 19 at https://ova. elections.il.gov/.

Any registered voter can cast a ballot at the Will County Clerk’s Office as well as certain city, village and township offices throughout the county. Romeoville residents can participate in early voting from 9 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, March 20 through March 31 at the village hall, 1050 W. Romeoville Road. Early voting begins March 20 at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road and will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 20 through March 31.

In addition, you may be eligible for Grace Period Registration and Voting. Grace Period Voting is for individuals who were unable to register to vote or change their address prior to the close of registration (28 days prior to an election).

However, grace period individuals must vote on the same day they

register. Grace Period Voting runs from the 27th day prior to an election through Election Day. Early voting and grace period voting can be done at the Will County Clerk’s office at the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet. Hours run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday until March 24; 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 25; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 26; and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., March 27 through March 31; 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 1; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 2; 8:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

April 3, and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., April 4.

The first day to vote by mail is March 20 and ends March 30.

Ten candidates are vying for four seats on the Valley View School School District 365u school board.

Incumbents are Dan Falese, Deborah Sykora, Elizabeth Campbell, and Victor Zak (who was recently appointed to fill Chrystal Hanson’s seat). Sally Guilbo, Sinatra Strong, Kokeith Perry, Natale Garofalo, Vickie Sutterlin, and Charlotte A. Droogan have joined the race to serve a full four-year term.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak is unopposed this election as is the entire village board, with Jose Chavez, Dave Richards and Brian Clancy Sr., extending their term another four years and Bernice Holloway keeping her seat as village clerk.

In addition, Nancy Hackett and

Ann Lopez-Caneva also are running unopposed for two trustee spots on the White Oak Library District board.

In the Bolingbrook mayoral election, long-standing Mayor Roger Claar will run against Will County Board member Jacqueline Tray-

nere. Incumbent Carol Penning will face off with Jamie Olson for village clerk. Incumbent trustees Michael Lawler, Sheldon Watts and Maria Zarate are up for re-election and Robert Jaskiewicz, Terri Ransom, and Mary Helen Reyna de Parsons have joined the race for trustees.

All incumbents are running on the Bolingbrook First Party ticket while all newcomers are joining forces as the Bolingbrook United Party.

Three candidates, Melissa McCloud, Denise Allen, and Alice Murray will be vying for two spots on the Bolingbrook Park District board and Robert Kalnicky and Ruth Newell are running unopposed for the Fountaindale Public Library board.

Readers ask for clarifications about Medicare Benefits are not a government handout - social Security is not a welfare program Over the past few months, these columns have raised plenty of questions about Medicare, present and future, and I’ve received many responses to those questions from readers.

Today’s column addresses some of readers’ concerns about Medicare, a complicated program.

Q: Why do you refer to Social Security as social insurance?

This continues to baffle me just as those who continually refer to SS as a handout. It’s not a handout. That money has been taken out of every one of my paychecks since I was 16. This is my money. TF A: Social insurance is group insurance. Workers pay premiums in exchange for insurance against the loss of wages as the result of disability death, or old age.

Because the government manages the insurance, and it is nearly universal, it has historically been labeled social insurance.

The writer is correct. Working and paying those insurance contributions entitles him to benefits. The benefits are not a government handout. Social Security is not a welfare program.

Q: I turn 65 this August and need to learn the basics to make informed choices. Is there a website or source you recommend that would give me the basics of Medicare? PH A: You can start with your local SHIP program, the government funded State Health Insurance Assistance Program https://www.shiptacenter.org/, which provides one-on-on counseling and answers questions.

Medicare Interactive https://www. medicareinteractive.org/, a website sponsored by the Medicare Rights Center, also is helpful as is Medicare’s official website, Medicare.gov.

Q: Both Social Security and Medicare are run under FICA, the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, and are not part of the national debt. The government needs to raise premiums for people earning higher incomes.

MR A: Social Security and Medicare’s hospital benefits are funded primarily through mandatory premiums known as insurance contributions.

Neither Social Security nor Medicare hospital insurance adds a penny to the nation’s deficit and debt.

One solution for potential Social Security shortfalls is to eliminate the cap on earnings on which Social Security contributions are assessed.

For this year the cap is $127,200.

Congress eliminated the cap for Medicare contributions in the early 1990s.

Q: The government has to stop using Medicare funds to pay hospital bills for illegal aliens.

They are not covered under Medicare, and the millions and billions of dollars should not be taken from Medicare funds. BC A: Medicare does not pay for healthcare for undocumented people. Community clinics may offer services.

Hospitals may treat them under their charity and uncompensated care programs, but usually try to collect those debts.

Q: Do you have any advice for individuals who will be switching over from Covered California (the state’s Obamacare marketplace) to Medicare in the next few months due to a disability? Are there any concerns someone would have before making the changeover?

LP A: Anyone age 65 and older and first signing up for Part B (which pays for doctors’ services and outpatient care) and in some states people with disabilities first signing up for Part B may be able to get a Medigap within the first six months of eligibility for Medicare.

After that it depends on your state’s rules. Check with your local SHIP program to learn what they are.

Q: I am very happy there’s going to be Medicaid reform. I am a dental hygienist who worked

in a practice that has seen has many Medicaid patients. Many of these people were illegal. Some couldn’t even speak English. I am on the door of seniorhood but LOVE the idea of Medicaid reform. We can save millions, probably billions, by putting people to work who can work.

CW A: The column you refer to discussed Medicare, not Medicaid.

The programs are not the same.

Medicaid was not designed as a seniors’ program, but 20 percent of Medicaid expenditures are for longterm care.

The lack of such care for families has meant that Medicaid, a welfare program, has become a long-term care program by default for many middle-income seniors.

Congress is considering cuts to both programs that could result in seniors paying a lot more out of pocket.

Q: My husband and I are hoping this administration doesn’t ruin this program by making it private. It has worked very well for a long time and should be left alone. If this program is made too expensive for seniors, the doctors will be seeing far fewer patients. BC A: It is well known that seniors are risk-averse, meaning they are afraid of big medical bills they can’t afford.

That explains the popularity of Medigap policies, especially the ones that cover the portion of a doctor’s bill that Medicare doesn’t pay, in effect giving seniors nearly full coverage.

Many in Congress want to change that. Beginning in 2020, insurers will be prohibited from selling those kinds of Medigap policies to people new to the program.

(Those who already have such a policy can keep it.)

The idea is to make seniors have more skin in the game by paying more for their care as a way to save money for the government.

Montini coach Jason Nichols had one last parting gift to deliver to senior Kaylee Bambule.

After the Broncos defeated Fremd 35-22 in the Class 4A state third-place game in Normal on March 4, Nichols, while sitting in the postgame press conference with Bambule and Claudia Kunzer, informed Bambule that she was the school’s all-time leading 3-point shooter. “(Former Montini player) Kateri Stone was texting me after Friday’s semifinals about the all-time leading 3-point shooter,” Nichols said. “She asked, ‘Did (Kaylee) pass me?’ I said, “Yup.” Bambule, an Ohio University signee and daughter of former Romeoville boys basketball coach Jeff Bambule, beat some

special players to earn Montini’s all-time 3-point shooting mark with over 300 3s. The Broncos have produced countless college players during Nichols’ tenure, and won four state titles and earned four third-place trophies.

“It’s really cool because Montini has had a lot of great three-point shooters,” Bambule said.

Bambule closed out her stellar career with a flourish, and added a new wrinkle to her game. Mostly a spot-up shooter, Bambule became a regular penetrator late in the season.

She put the ball on the floor and hit the game-tying basket at the buzzer to force overtime in an eventual double-overtime win over Homewood-Flossmoor in a Class 4A supersectional.

Bambule, a guard and Class 4A AP First-Team selection, scored eight points in Montini’s 37-35 loss to Edwardsville in the state semifinal, and added six points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals against Fremd.

Bambule said the win over Fremd was a special way to end her career with a win. She had to take on more responsibility this season, not only because of her experience but due to season-ending injuries to highly regarded guards Nikki

Oppenheimer (Syracuse recruit) and sophomore Zoe Zacker, a top 100 recruit nationally.

“To play in this game and end my career at Montini with a win is unbelievable,” Bambule said.

“We got hit with two of our better players with season-ending injuries and it showed a lot of toughness and a lot of heart for us to get here. I’m beyond proud of our team.”

Nichols, a hard-driving coach, showed his soft side when talking about Bambule’s worth to the program. Bambule spent hours in the gym working on her shot and becoming a well-

rounded player.

“She has been guarded so hard this year,” Nichols said.

“You give her an inch, she will take advantage. Kaylee Bambule will really be missed next year.”

The 5-foot-7 Bambule averaged 13 points and 3.5 rebounds and made 117 3-pointers this season for the 33-2 Broncos.

“I had a great experience at Montini,” Bambule said.

“I couldn’t ask for a better experience. I don’t think there’s anything better. Coach got the best out of us, made us work hard and become better players.”

Beware of overspending at warehouse clubs DEAR DAVE, I know you’re big on bargains and saving money. How do you feel about warehouse clubs, like Costco and Sam’s Club?

JESSICA DEAR JESSICA, We have both of those in our neighborhood, and I’m a big fan.

There are definitely some good buys and great bargains to be had in places like that. To be honest, my wife is probably a bigger fan than I am. I suspect we save more money from her trips than mine to those spots.

I will advise you to watch your spending carefully in warehouse clubs. Most people overbuy in situations like that, especially those of

us who are spenders by nature. Believe it or not, I’m a spender by nature. To this day, if I’m not careful, I’m still bad about buying things I don’t need – or too much of the things I do need – in warehouse clubs.

Have fun in there, and make

sure you find some steals on smart things you can stock up on. Just don’t go crazy and wreck your budget by overspending!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’m 26, and I’ve been running my own business as sole proprietor for a year-and-a-half. My gross revenues are about $94,000, and my personal net worth is around $68,000. Is there an asset level you recommend reaching before moving to LLC status?

MEGHAN DEAR MEGHAN, There’s not really a magic number for this kind of thing. In your case, I wouldn’t go to the trouble for an LLC right now. You don’t need

the hassle of extra paperwork and the expense of processing and filing fees. Just make sure you have normal, liability-type insurance in place. That shouldn’t cost a lot of money.

The main reason you would consider shifting to an LLC is if you had reached a point in life as a business owner where you were afraid you might have a target on your back.

By that, I mean you would want protection in the event of a lawsuit if your company had grown to sizable proportions and you had begun to accumulate substantial personal assets.

At this stage I don’t think anyone’s going to bother you.

Avoid aches and pains when gardening With spring around the corner, practice these tips People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health.

But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent greenthumbers indoors.

Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden.

USE ERGONOMIC GARDENING TOOLS Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gar-

dening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

ALTERNATE TASKS Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens.

By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty.

Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break.

TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches

that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions.

Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

MAINTAIN GOOD POSTURE Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens.

When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries.

Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture.

Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.
