Brooks students earn Scholastic writing awards; nationals next for Wagner 8th grader Brenden Wagner earned Scholastic Gold Key for his poem “Clearly Defined” Four Brooks Middle School honor students have been named 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing regional award winners, with one of them, 8th grader Brenden Wagner, advancing to national competition.

Wagner earned a Scholastic Gold Key for his poem “Clearly Defined,” Krista Vilimek received a Silver Key for a poem titled “My Father’s Eyes” as well as an honorable mention for another poem, Kendra Carrillo secured an honorable mention for her poem “Nothing Beautiful Lasts” and Grace Hannemann received an honorable mention for her short story “Ghost Girl.”

Nearly 320,000 students in grades 7 through 12 submitted entries to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest which is presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The group’s mission is to identify students with exceptional

artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world. Regional Gold Key winners like Wagner move on to the next level of competition with an opportunity for national recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships.

“Lots of people have told me I’m good at writing, but I’m not a writer,” said Wagner, who is involved in drama at Brooks and spends two hours a day at Bolingbrook High School taking high school level math and science classes.

The former Pioneer and R.C. Hill elementary school student said he created his award-winning piece about rules and expectations of poetry and how they’ve changed over time “on the spot” after he lost one of the two other poems he had written for the contest.

“Krista started sharing her poetry-filled journal early in the year,” Green said. “She sees with an artist’s eye and as a member of the Louder Than a Bomb Spoken Word

poetry team, she is developing into a performance poet as well.”

“I’ve never been recognized for my writing before,” Vilimek said. “I felt really happy when I found out. I was really ecstatic.”

Carrillo, who Green calls “a true poet in all senses,” attended Wood View Elementary School before Brooks. She hopes to major in the culinary arts and eventually open her own restaurant.

She wrote her award-winning poem “just to see if I could actually do it. It was a bit of an experiment.”

Hannemann, a former Pioneer Elementary School student, readily admits language arts is her favorite class. This is her first writing award.

“Grace is a driven writer and an amazing literary scholar,” Green said.

For more than 90 years The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated.

March 11 last day to donate clothing for BHS Ambassadors fundraiser With spring right around the corner and many folks cleaning out their closets, Bolingbrook High School’s Student Ambassador Club is looking for donations of gently used clothes, accessories and linens for a fundraiser.

The drive, which ends March 11, is being conducted in conjunction with the Savers organization.

Savers will pay the Ambassadors money for every pound of clothing that is donated.

Foundation for 50,000-square-foot expansion underway, with school officials saying they expect the entire project to be completed in 2017.

Crews lay foundation for JJC’s Romeoville expansion Project expected to wrap up in 2017 The Joliet Junior College expansion is well underway, with construction crews laying the foundation for a new 50,000-square-foot expansion to the Romeoville campus.

First built in 1993, the Romeoville campus is located just off Weber Road and 135th Street.

The expansion will include a new two-story facility and will serve as the new entrance to the campus directly facing 135th Street.

Since October 2014, Demonica Kemper Architects has worked with college committees to assess the specific programming needs for the facility.

The college said the expansion

was designed to make the Romeoville site a self-sufficient campus, similar to the main Joliet campus. School officials report that the project is on time and on budget, and expected to be completed in 2017.

fight for MAP

State financial aid in limbo after governor vetoes funding bill

The state’s most at-risk students could be in danger of losing the very funds needed to stay in college, thanks to partisan politics and the continued state budget stalemate.

Thousands of Illinois students rely on the Monetary Award Program, or MAP, which provides grants that do not need to be repaid to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need.

“Two-four-six-eight, we just want to graduate” – a battle cry that has fallen on deaf ears – was shouted by students who attend Lewis University in Romeoville during a rally last month in front of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago. Universities and colleges from throughout the state attended the rally, with Lewis, the largest contingent. Nearly 1,400 Lewis University students would have been awarded MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year.

With student, faculty and staff support, the university also started a “stuff the box” initiative, writing letters in support of the MAP grant that requested the governor sign Senate Bill 2043.

Despite local and statewide efforts, Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2043 and the House opted not to override the decision last week. The measure would have immediately released $168 million to college students in Illinois.

“Gov. Rauner is wrong to make 125,000 low-income college students the latest victims of his avoidance behavior,” state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said. “He needs to think about others, stop dodging the obvious and concentrate on negotiating a budget.”

He has been an actively fighting to secure MAP funding since the first signs the financial assistance program was in jeopardy.

Rauner has opposed the bill, saying it would only add to the state’s deficit and not solve the problem.

“SB 2043 can only become law if Rep. [Jack] Franks or Rep. [Scott] Drury succumb to pressure from Speaker Madigan and flip their votes to force a massive tax hike on the people of Illinois,” said Catherine Kelly, press secretary for the governor. “These members sided with taxpayers the first time around because this is a sham bill and an empty promise to students.

We believe these members will do the right thing to ensure taxpayers are not left holding the bag.

“All of us want to fund higher education and MAP, and we stand ready to work with the General Assembly to find ways to do so without adding to the deficit or forcing a massive tax increase.”

The House chose to not override the veto. McGuire said the override looked to authorize the governor to make releasing MAP grants a

“The governor rejected this opportunity,” he added. “My work to secure funding for Illinois’ needy students, community colleges and nine public universities will continue.”

Money not spent In September, many state universities and community colleges began absorbing costs upfront to allow the school year to start on time.

According to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, MAP uses a formula to distribute the appropriated funds so that the neediest students receive grant assistance. ISAC is operating on the

assumption that the appropriation level would be the same as 201415. However, the state budget that funds MAP has not yet been finalized by the Illinois General Assembly and governor. As a result, it is not known how much funding this program will receive.

Last year alone, the state funded $364.8 million in MAP grants. The average student with a MAP grant receives approximately $2,700 to help pay for tuition.

At Joliet Junior College, nearly 1,000 students may lose the necessary assistance to pursue dreams of higher education.

At JJC, MAP has the largest demographic impact on student financial support and access to education. Based on financial aid records, the school has 945 students with $536,376, in MAP funds applied to their fall accounts.

Because of the budget impasse, JJC applied MAP funds to students’ accounts as pending financial aid, while the college awaits MAP payments from the state.

The college is making its decision to fund MAP on a semester-by-semester basis, and has opted to front more than $1

million in MAP funds for the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.

The college applied $553,000 to student MAP accounts for the fall semester and applied $470,000 to date for the spring 2016 semester.

“It’s imperative that our students have all the tools and support they need toward completion of their academic goals,” said Kelly Rhoder, JJC communications director. “Financial aid is a significant piece of that. Without it, the larger, long-term impact is on our local workforce. We train and educate skilled workers to fill in-demand jobs, we ensure the seamless transfer of students seeking bachelor’s degrees, and so much more.

“People come to JJC to improve their lives, and to have access new opportunities and new experiences. We will continue to do what we can to preserve that.”

In addition, the state’s funding continues to shrink in all areas.

JJC previously reported that since fiscal year 2000, the state’s share of the college’s operating budget has decreased from 18.7 percent to a projected 10 percent in fiscal year 2016.

“Illinois needs to invest in the higher education of its residents in order to get back to full strength,” McGuire said. “Failing to provide the financial aid for which 130,000 students qualified threatens those students, the schools they attend and the future of our state.”

College of DuPage is reportedly managing the loss at this point but does worry how long it will be able to sustain student’s missing MAP awards.

The college’s student newspaper, The Courier, reports that Acting Interim President Joseph Collins believes the college may need to pull extra funding, financial aid will come directly from the college if MAP grants are unavailable.

“The foundation has agreed to help out in terms of any kind of emergencies that come up,” said Collins. “We do have an emergency fund for worst case scenario.

Other schools aren’t in as good of a financial position as we are, and are turning students away because they don’t have the map funding.”

McGuire said he will continue to fight for MAP funding and higher education.

“MAP isn’t about athletics, new buildings, faculty positions, or administrators’ pensions,” said McGuire. “MAP is about the opportunity to learn. It’s about students who want to do more in life for themselves and their state.”

Create a themed menu routine Another option to make meal planning easy is to have a theme for each day of the week. Themes help narrow down your options, which for me is the biggest challenge of meal planning.

For example, Monday is breakfast for dinner; Tuesday is Mexican; Wednesday is pasta; Thursday is soup; Friday is fish; Saturday is pizza – you get the idea. You could also include a night where family members take turns planning (and maybe even cooking!) dinner.

I keep a list of those frozen meals on my meal planning whiteboard so I don’t forget them. If I know I’ll have a busy week, I incorporate a frozen meal into my meal planning.

Prepare ahead I review my meal planning whiteboard each evening so I know what’s planned for dinner the next day. I prepare as much as possible by chopping vegetables, measuring out spices, thawing meat and doing whatever else I can to make the next day’s meal preparation quick and easy.

Manley to discuss state budget issues at retiree advisory committee Manley has supported measures to protect senior-reliant programs To help area residents understand the impact the lack of a state budget is having on community services and what is being done to protect them, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, will host a retiree advisory committee later this month with area constituents.

The discussion is scheduled March 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. at her district office, located at 2701 Black Road, Suite 201, in Joliet.

“I want to be in constant contact with everyone who lives in my district so that I can be a stronger voice for our community in Springfield,” Manley said.

“This committee is a great way to make sure that your opinions are being heard, while also getting an update about what is going on in Springfield.”

Manley hosts her retiree advisory committee on the fourth Monday of the month to maintain an open line of communication with the seniors who live in her district. In addition, she hosts other similar meetings throughout the area to be closer to people who cannot travel far distances.

Manley has supported measures that would protect programs that seniors throughout the state rely upon, yet have lost funding due to the lack of a state budget. She has voted to release the funds for the Community Care Program, the Elderly Nutrition Program, Veterans’ Homes and other essential services. She is also sponsoring legislation to fund the Meals on Wheels Program.

Joliet partners with Pace to construct bus facility

The Joliet City Council voted March 1 to approve an intergovernmental agreement between the city and Pace for the construction of a bus facility and improvements to St. Louis Street, a road leading up to the station.

Expansion calls for the relocation of a Paceowned parking lot, located next to their maintenance facility, and employee parking lot to accommodate the road. Pace is offering the property at no cost to the city, according to the agreement.

Groundwater Awareness Week reminds residents to have wells tested Thousands of area residents rely on private wells for their daily water requirements, and the Will County Health Department is reminding them that their private well water should be tested at least once a year. Will County groundwater is generally considered safe to use, but it is susceptible to naturally occurring or man-made contamination.

The only way to ensure your well is free from harmful chemicals and pathogens is to have the water tested for the presence of substances and bacteria that can make people ill.

It is a good idea to have your well water analyzed prior to warmer weather and the beginning of the peak season for water usage.

National Groundwater Awareness Week (March 6-12), is an annual public awareness initiative focusing on resource stewardship, and the need to maintain a healthy fresh water supply.

The Will County Environmental Health Laboratory can test potable water for bacteria, hardness, nitrates and fluoride. The facility is certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the NELAC Institute for drinking water analysis. The facility tested 2,632 potable water samples during 2015, an increase of more than 9.4 percent over 2014.

If laboratory analysis of well water indicates that it is unsatisfactory for drinking or cooking, it will need to be disinfected. You may wish to consult a licensed well water contractor. A document detailing procedures necessary to disinfect a well can also be downloaded from the Environmental Health page on the Will County Health Department website: www.willcountyhealth. org.

Shooting woes plague Bolingbrook in regional final loss to Minooka

Entering the Class 4A playoffs, there may not have been a team hotter than Bolingbrook.

The Raiders had won eight of nine games entering the postseason and nine of 10 heading into the finals of the Minooka Regional against the No. 1 seed and regional host Indians.

That hot streak came to a screeching halt, however, as Bolingbrook fell 49-31 to end its hopes at a repeat trip to the state final four.

Minooka got off to a hot start, opening the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back.

“We did not play well in the first three minutes especially,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost. “We turned the ball over and chucked a few shots that were not good. You have to give Minooka credit, they defended us well and they were ready.

When you get down by 10 to that team in this place it’s tough to overcome.”

Bolingbrook cut the lead to 1710 at the half and had the game at a two possession striking distance several times in the second half, but could never get closer.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well from the field or the line at all,” Brost said. “They are very disciplined. We knew the game would be in the 40s, we just didn’t think we would be in the 30s.”

While Minooka’s defense set the tone early, it was the Raider defense that aided them in having chances to get back in the game.

“I thought defensively we played well as funny as that sounds,” Brost said. “At the end, we had to foul and they hit free throws. We just couldn’t make shots tonight and that was disappointing, but that is all part of high school basketball. So you

Lewis men win GLVC tournament title The Lewis University men’s basketball team, led by five players in double-figures, did not trail once as the Flyers earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title with the 80-71 victory over No. 14 UW-Parkside at the Family Center on Sunday (March 6) evening. The tournament title is Lewis’ second, as the Flyers last won in 2002.

Lewis senior forward Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) posted a doubledouble with a game-high 23 points on 10-for-17 shooting, including 10 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg), the 2016 GLVC Tournament MVP, had 17 points, while freshman guard Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) and junior guard Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) each contributed 11 points.

Junior point guard Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), a GLVC All-Tournament Team selection, had 10 points and four assists in the win for the Flyers.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 24-8, while UW-Parkside drops to 24-5. The Flyers and Rangers will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday night at 9:30 PM. The link to view the Selection Show can be found

UW-Parkside senior guard Andy Mazurczak, the 2016 GLVC Player of the Year, posted 17 of his team-best 22 points in the second half. Ranger sophomore guard Kendale McCullum had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Chavares Flanigan added 11 points.

As a team, Lewis shot 49.2% (31-for-63) from the field, 58.3% (7-for-12) from three-point range and 91.7% (11-for-12) from the free throw line. The Rangers made 42.9% (27-for-63) from the field and 34.8% (8-for-23) from long range. UW-Parkside made 60% (9-for-15) of its free throw attempts.

Lewis jumped out to a 49-34 halftime lead as they hit 12 of its last 17 shots, including a Strus 40-footer at the buzzer.

The Flyers knew that the Rangers would not go away quietly, as they went on a 33-18 run to open the second half and tie the game up at 67 with 6:59 left in regulation. Mazurczak accounted for 15 of the Rangers’ 33 points during that stretch.

Lewis responded with a 6-0 run over the next 2:30, behind buckets from Blaylock, Strus and Simelton, to regain the 73-67 lead with 4:29 left in the game.

Both team traded baskets,

before a pair of Mazurczak free throws brought UW-Parkside to within four at 75-71 with 3:11 left in the game.

Neither team scored on its next three possessions, but Strus sealed the game with a threepointer with 39 seconds left to give the Flyers the 78-71 lead.

The Lewis men’s basketball team already knew they were dancing, but now they know their first partner. The NCAA announced on Sunday (March 6) evening that the Flyers have received the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional and will play No. 5 seed Saginaw Valley State in the opening round.

This will be Lewis’ 15th NCAA Tournament berth in school history.

The 24-8 Flyers will play Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (March 12) at a time to be determined. The game will be played at No. 1 seed and regional host UW-Parkside.

The Flyers have already played Saginaw Valley State this season, with Lewis winning 85-84 on Nov. 21 at Neil Carey Arena. Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a layup with four seconds remaining to give the Flyers the win. The contest featured six ties and eight lead changes.

“Saginaw is a tough opponent and obviously gave us all we could handle earlier in the year,” Lewis head coach Scott Trost said. “We look forward to the challenge and I’m sure they will as well.”

Season ends for Spartans in regional

Minooka may have been the No. 1 seed in the Lockport Sectional, but Romeoville gave the Indians all they could handle last week in the opener of the Class 4A Minooka Regional.

The Spartans, the No. 17 seed, took Minooka to overtime, thanks in part to a late whistle at the end of regulation that gave Indians’ senior Joe Butler a chance to tie the game at the foul line, but lost 51-46.

“I felt we did everything we needed to do right and it is hard to take that loss,” said Romeville coach Marc Howard. “I think we had a bad call at the end of regulation that went against us that turned the game around. In my opinion, that was just a missed shot, not a foul and that one really cost us.

“Then they did a good job in overtime of hitting free throws and doing the little things and their experience showed in overtime.”

Butler’s tying free throw came after Romeoville senior Matt Cappelletti had scored six points on two possessions in a row to give the Spartans a one-point lead.

Cappelletti first scored the old fashioned way as he was fouled on the way to a made basket and next buried a three from the corner.

Those were six of his 11 points.

He seemed determined to carry Romeoville after a slow start.

“I think at the end of the fourth quarter, what he did, that was him,” Howard said. “He doesn’t give up. He doesn’t get down when he’s struggling. He just keeps fighting. That is how he has been, he is good role model in the classroom, he is a 3.5 (grade point average) student. He is not done playing basketball. I think he is one of the most underrated players in the area. He could easily, in my opinion, play Division II or Division I basketball. Us being young and inexperienced didn’t it didn’t help showcase him in the right way, but Capp has a bright future.”

That freshman, Mike Salter, led the Spartans in scoring with 13 points in the loss. In fact, 26 of Romeoville’s 46 points were scored by freshman or sophomores.

“We are a young team and seven of the players that play are underclassmen,” Salter said. “We knew coming out against Minooka with having (a lot) of seniors, we knew how intense the game was going to be. We came out with a chip on our shoulder because we knew we had the No. 1 seed and no one gave us a chance to win, so

we came out and gave it all we had and played with heart.”

Salter will be one of the keys to the Spartans (9-17) as they move forward into next season, still with a young lineup, however, more experience.

“We didn’t have the season we expected, but we felt like we did a lot of growing up this season,” he said. “We only had one senior on the roster, so it was a lot of immaturity and non experience in the beginning and we feel like we did a lot of growing and we feel like we will come out next season really strong.”

For the 11th time in program history and the fourth year in a row, the Lewis women’s basketball team has qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional. The No. 4 in the nation Flyers learned on Sunday (March 6) night that they have earned the No. 2 seed in the 2016 NCAA Midwest Regional.

Lewis will play No. 7 seed Grand Valley State in the opening round on Friday (March 12) at a time to be announced. No. 1 seed Ashland will serve as the host.

Grand Valley State handed Lewis one of their two losses on the season, defeating the Flyers 7163 on Nov. 25.

Combined with Lewis’ berth in 2011, this is the fifth bid in six years for the Flyers. The Flyers made it each year from 2005 to 2007; meaning Lewis has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in eight of the last 12 years. Lewis’ fourth bid in a row means this year’s senior class is now the first in program history to qualify for the NCAA

Tournament each year.

The Flyers won the Midwest Regional last season for the program’s first ever Elite Eight berth.

“Every team wants to defend their title,” Lewis head coach Kristen Gillespie. “This group has earned that right thanks to their focus and passion this year.”

Two-time Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) leads the Flyers. She is averaging 20.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. GLVC Freshman of the Year Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./ Waukesha North) is averaging 18.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest.

The opening frame was tight until after the 15-point mark when Ohio State took control with a 5-1 run. In the second, the Buckeyes scored the first five points and never looked back.

Lewis rallied back in the third set. Even after falling behind 117, the Flyers grabbed a 23-22 lead.

An Ohio State timeout gave the Buckeyes some life as a kill and a block gave Ohio State match point at 24-23. Lewis denied a pair of match points with Perinar kills before the Flyers won the set 28-26. Junior Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) notched point 28 on a solo block.

The fourth set was tight all the way, but Ohio State earned the final two points to win the match after a Weiskircher kill made it a 23-22 deficit for the Flyers.

Junior Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) had 10 kills on 13 attempts with no errors. Senior Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) recorded seven kills and three blocks. He sits at 499 career blocks for his career.

“The guys showed some fight but we struggled with some first ball contact,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “Mitch and Jacob had great performances tonight.”

The difference statistically was Ohio State’s 11-2 edge in service aces.

“We will be fine,” he said. “If you ask me, our program is the best program in the area and it will continue to be that way moving forward.”

Pausing the baby steps to celebrate?

Dear Dave, My wife and I are in Baby Step 2 of your plan, and we’ve got our 20th wedding anniversary coming up in a few months. We had always planned on taking a 10day luxury trip to celebrate, but now that we’re trying to get out of debt it seems pretty unrealistic.

Should we pause the Baby Steps and celebrate like we originally planned, or would it be better to concentrate on paying off debt?

Then, in a year or two when you’ve reached your goal of being debtfree, you could have a big double celebration — for your anniversary and for gaining control of your finances.

Think about it. Why isn’t the 21st, 22nd or 23rd anniversary just as big as the 20th? No reason really.

It’s just an arbitrary milestone we as human beings decided on and created. But you can “undecide” stuff like that anytime you want.
