Compass Church Pantry aims to help serve community Pastor Javier Michel leads in helping to serve between 70 and 80 families per week BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff @RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com
For families who are going through a transitional period, need assistance or have just fallen on hard times, the Compass Food Pantry in Bolingbrook has taken a large stance in salvation. The Compass Food Pantry is an emergency food program for families in need, while serving those who are in a certain brackets related to their income and people in their family. Families in the Bolingbrook and Romeoville area are able to visit the food pantry once a week. Visitors just have to show their I.D. and residence in order to receive or be provided a weeks worth of groceries and home necessities.
“We work with the WillowCreek Care Center for the food pantry side of it,” said Pastor Javier Michel. “We would like to grow in other ways such as providing employment, connect with families and see if temporary housing could be obtainable, so those are all intentions for the future.” Michel said that the best part of helping others is not those who are serving them, but empowering people to feel better about themselves and then those are in current need, get back out and help the community and help change other people’s lives. “When you see that transformation from the receiver mentality, that means everything to us,” Michel said. “The giving mentality is something we want to share with other people so then they can adapt that as well, it’s really
great to see that come to fruition when it happens.” For the Compass Church as whole, there are no funds that are disseminated. The partnership with Loaves and Fishes provide all of the food, while Compass provides the place in order to serve. Compass also provides the volunteers to serve the community, with members from the church donating in order to help serve more people and for the service to

possible. Every Wednesday, the Compass Church Food Pantry serves from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at 151 E. JCA graduate Kaitlyn Williams is contributing at Lewis after trasnferring from D-I Loyola BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com
Coming out of Joliet Catholic Academy, Kaitlyn Williams was recruited by several schools, including the University of St. Francis and then head coach Samantha Quigley-Smith. After averaging 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Angels her senior season, Williams decided on Division-I Loyola University in Chicago. For the Ramblers her freshman season, Williams played in all 30 games, starting in 26. She was second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.1 points per contest, going 59-for-196 from three-point range. Her D-I high was 19 points in her collegiate debut against Northern Illinois and earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors. She was fifth in the Missouri Valley in three-point field goal made per game, averaging 2.0 per contest and reached

double figures in scoring 11 times on the year. After her inaugural college season, Williams decided to leave Loyola and transfer to Lewis University, joining the coach that once recruited her. “When I saw that Sam Quigley went to a Division-II program and I live 25 minutes away from here and I am a homebody, it was very nice knowing that all the factors I wanted were at one place and that was the main reason,” said Williams, a Homer Glen native. Having both played at Joliet Catholic Academy, the two had ties that dated back to Williams’ middle-school days. “I have known Sam since maybe my seventh grade year when I attended Doug Bruno camps and she worked them because she was just graduating DePaul,” Williams said. “Then in high school, she recruited me to St. Francis.” SEE HOME PAGE 6

Pulliam wins two events at ONU The sixth ranked Lewis women’s track and field team had a successful Saturday at the ONU Invite in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Flyers recorded 14 top 10 finishes in the meet and won five events. Joelle Ataessien (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young HS) finished fourth in the 60 meter dash in a time of 8.05 seconds and was second in the 60 meter hurdles crossing the line behind teammate Natasha Bernett at 9.31 seconds. Bernett edged Ataessien at the tape. Allison Mack (Roselle, Ill./ Lake Park HS) and Azana ClarkJordan (Plano, Ill./Whitney Young HS) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 60 meter
hurdles at 9.67 and 9.99 seconds respectively. Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) won both the shot put and weight throw events. She finished with a mark of 46’6” in the shot to record a provisional qualifying mark and had a throw of 57’0” in the weight throw which was also a provisional qualifying mark. Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./ Parkway West) finished in a tie for first in the pole vault clearing a height of 10’11.75”. Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville) won the long and triple jumps with jumps of 19’2” in the long jump and 39’9” in the triple jump. Anna Laudizio
(Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took second in the triple jump with a jump of 38’4.75” and third in the long jump with a jump of 18’2.25”. Laudizio’s jump in the triple jump was good for a provisional qualifying mark to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. Gaby Sanchez took second in the mile run with a time of 5:25.23 and was ninth in the 800 meters crossing the line at 2:30.00. Her time in the 800 was a personal best. “We didn’t have our full team competing, so the team scores will not be indicative of where we should have been,” Lewis head women’s track and field
coach Dana Schwarting said. “Overall we had a ton of personal and season bests, and we look great going into the stretch run leading into indoor conference.” The Flyers also had a runner at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., as Ashleigh Macleod (Mishawaka, IN/Penn) was invited to compete in the 800 meter run. Macleod finished with a time of 2:10.86 which was third fastest in school history, the seventh fastest in Division II this season and a provisional qualifying mark for the Indoor Championships in March. “Ashleigh ran a very aggressive race today,” Lewis assistant women’s track and field coach James Kearney said. “It was her first time running the 800 since May and I was thrilled with her performance.” • The Lewis men’s track and field team recorded six top 10 finishes at the ONU Invite on Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. HOME FROM PAGE 5 Although she came in from a D-I program, Williams said she does not feel any pressure to perform at a higher level – at least not from her teammates. “I have fit in pretty well. My teammates made me feel super welcome. I put a lot of expectations on myself, but my teammates don’t put pressure on me to perform,” she said. “It is crazy how well we do blend with each other and our practices are so good. Our bench contributes just like the starters do and we have depth all the way to the 14th player and we need all 14 to get where we want to do. This season for the Flyers, Williams has started all 17 games. She averages 6.2 points per game and has hit 28 of 69 from threepoint land to go along with 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest. Along with her talent, Williams also brings experience to the Lewis roster. “When you have players that

Michael Lyons (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield Central HS) finished in a three-way tie for first clearing a height of 6’7” in the high jump. Ethan Cane () finished fourth in the long jump with a jump of 22’8”. Malik Carson (Joliet, Ill./ Joliet Central) took 10th in the event with a jump of 20’9”. His jump was a personal best. Chaz Sales () took second in his preliminary heat in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.23 seconds and finished ninth in the finals in a time of 9.76 seconds. “We didn’t have our full team competing, so the team scores will not be indicative of where we should have been,” Lewis head men’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “Overall we had a ton of personal and season bests, and we look great going into the stretch fun leading to indoor conference.”
transfer that have college basketball playing experience, that intensity is already there.” QuigleySmith said. “Not that incoming freshmen don’t have that – but she is coming from the Division-I level and played in a tough league and played a lot of minutes and she is making an immediate impact. Just the fact that she can shoot the basketball from three stretches out their defense makes this a little easier. Shooting the ball from three helps us tremendously and takes pressure off the bigs.” One of those post players is senior Jessica Kelliher who leads the Flyers with 23.7 points per game and is less than 100 points away from becoming the Great Lakes Valley Conference all-time leading scorer. Williams sat out last season after her transfer and expects to be an integrel part in the Flyers’ success the remaining years of eligibility. “I am super happy that I made the decision to come here,” she said.

Let daughter take care of her own card payments
DEAR DAVE, My daughter is in college, and I’ve always warned her to stay away from credit cards. Recently, I learned she got a department store credit card despite my advice. She has stayed within her credit limit, but she has never made any of the payments. At this point, she owes about $3,500. She’s a good student, and I want to look at this as a young person’s mistake. Should I pay it off for her this one time? JOSEPH DEAR JOSEPH, You’re right, this is a typical young person’s mistake. Like a
lot of mistakes our kids make, it’s one that’s bad and wonderful at the same time. It’s bad because, if she had just listened to dear old dad, she would’ve avoided a mess.

It’s wonderful, though, because it gives you the opportunity to provide her with a real world, teachable moment. I understand you wanting to help her out “this one time.” It means you have a good heart, and that you care about your daughter and love her. There’s a reality here, though, I hope you won’t overlook. It’s her debt, not yours. She knew what she was doing when she signed up for that credit card. She knew what it meant, what was expected, and she is the one who should have to make good on the repayment. The entire deal is legal
and fair. At this point, my advice is to put your arm around her, talk to her, and lovingly explain where she went wrong and why it was a bad idea. You can even help her find a part-time job if she doesn’t have one right now, so she can pay off her debt and get out of this mess. But leave the payments to her. My guess is by the time she finishes working her tail off to pay this debt she will have learned a lesson she’ll remember for the rest of her life! —DAVE Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions.
