2017-18 Valley View kindergarten enrollment to get underway Open Enrollment for Valley View School District 365U children who will be in kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year: will be held from March 16 through March 24. This period will include two late evenings in Romeoville and a Saturday enrollment session in Bolingbrook.

Students who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1: 2017 are eligible for kindergarten.

The Enrollment Office in the VVSD Administration Center will have extra workers on hand from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 16 and 17 as well as March 20-24.

The office will remain open until 6 p.m. on March 21 and 23. The Administration Center has moved and is now located at 801 W. Normantown Road in Romeoville.

In addition: registrars will be located at the Fountaindale Library: 300 W. Briarcliff: Bolingbrook from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: March 18.

Students must be enrolled by either a parent or guardian.

In order to enroll: the following documents will need to be provided: 1. One of the following showing proof of age: • Certified birth certificate with a raised seal (no photo copies: hospital birth certificates or baptismal certificates will be accepted) • If foreign born: the child’s passport or legal birth certificate from country in which student was born 2. One of the following for proof of residency: • Current Real Estate Tax Bill (2015 will be accepted until the 2016 bill is available) • Mortgage statement dated within 30 days of enrollment • Current-year lease signed by landlord with landlord phone number 3. One of the following for additional proof of residency: • A utility bill in the parent’s name dated within 30 days of enrollment • Business mail in parent’s name dated within 30 days of enrollment 4. A photo ID for the parent or legal guardian Students cannot be enrolled unless all documents are presented. Foster parents must bring in the Placement Form to

enroll their student. Anyone living with another family will need to bring the homeowner with them with the required proofs of residency plus one proof of residency for the parent. Legal guardians: children living in another person’s home or anyone with residency questions should contact the Enrollment Department to discuss special circumstances before registering.

If a language other than English is spoken at home or by the child: a state-required English proficiency test will be administered in June: July or August. During enrollment: an appointment will be made for this required assessment.

If it is inconvenient to come in during the open enrollment periods: parents may come in to the Administration Center any time during normal business hours: Monday through Friday: 7:30 to 4:00 p.m. (closed on legal holidays).

VVSD school board OKs 2017-18 school year meeting dates The 2017-18 school year schedule for the Valley View School District 365U Board of Education will include 19 regularly scheduled meetings.

The board generally meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month: except when the date falls on a Monday holiday. Meetings will be held at Lukancic Middle School: 725 Normantown Road: Romeoville.

Specific meetings dates in 2016 are July 17: Aug. 14 and 28: Sept. 11 and 25: Oct. 10 and 23: Nov. 13: and Dec. 11. Meeting dates for 2017 include Jan. 8 and 22: Feb. 12 and 26: March 12 and 26: April 16: May 14 and 29: and June 11.

Valley View to offer new AP courses Teachers will be working with college board to prepare these courses

Students looking to earn college credit even before entering, may get additional opportunities as the Valley View School District 365u looks to add Advanced Placement courses to its curriculum.

In keeping in alignment with its

strategic plan to offer more rigorous coursework, one area the school district is working on, according to Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder is to expand offerings and increase enrollment in advanced placement courses.

Currently in the social students content area, the district has two courses available (AP European History and AP United States History). The district is now propos-

ing to add three additional, new courses: 1) AP Human Geography 2) AP United States Government & Politics 3) AP Human Psychology 2.

Courses will be modeled after college courses and if a student tests and scores a three or better, the student will earn college credit, which, now by state law, Illinois is required to recognize.

“The Human Geography course will be offered to new freshman and we are excited about this,” said Kinder. “This will help them get their feet wet in the

area of AP courses and will allow them to have a great deal of exposure to this kind of curriculum in their four years with us.”

Teacher teams will be working with the college board to prepare these courses and the purchase of new textbooks will be required. All the materials will be in alignment with what college board requires.

“I know during the 8th grade orientation at the high school, students heard about the AP class and left very excited to have that opportunity; you may have a dearth of freshman who want to

try their hand at this,” said School Board President Steve Quigley.

Upon conclusion of the course, students will be prepared to take the respective AP exam, which is a college-level assessment developed and scored by college and university faculty as well as experienced AP teachers. By adding these courses the district will provide students with the opportunity to take an Advanced Placement course for four years.

The board is expected to vote on the matter at its next board meeting, Feb. 27.

Valley View School District 365U, serving Bolingbrook and Romeoville, enjoys a solid partnership with The Valley View Educational Enrichment Foundation. This partnership brings educational opportunities to our

students that cannot be funded through the District budget. Since 1994, estimates indicate that more than 600,000 students have benefited from the programs designed by district staff and funded by the foundation.

According to Lawler, in its first 22 years, the Foundation has been able to award 752 grants totaling $1.3 million. In the 2015-16 school year, 31 grants were awarded for a value of more than $31,000.

Army Corps of Engineering to study stray electric current When the invasive Asian carp fish became a threat to Lake Michigan waters, the Army Corps of Engineering opted to install an electric current in the DuPage River.

Romeoville Village Attorney Rich Vogel reported that five years ago, the agency, in what became a lengthy, and expensive process, provided grounding protection in the areas of the 135th street bridge.

The agency has now approached with some concerns about a stray electrical current coming from the fish barrier that could come in contact with the bridge. They are now monitoring periodically any areas of the bridge that could come in contact with the current. The agency has placed a plastic covering to prevent contact as a preliminary step on any such areas of concern such as metal light poles or railings and appropriate warning signage has been installed while further grounding systems are studied.

New parking ordinance for Honeytree subdivision Parking concerns in the Honeytree subdivision have been evaluated and a new ordinance will soon be put in place.

According to Police Chief Mark Turvey several streets in the area are extremely narrow, resulting in the inability of cars to pass if there are cars parked on both sides of the streets.

To reduce risk of accident and allow emergency vehicles access, parking will now be limited to one side of the street, with parking on the other side permanently prohibited.

Residents adjacent to the area were notified by mail.

Lewis presents ‘Human Face of India’ Feb. 27 Hear a personal witness to the significant impact of the Lenten program Rice Bowl from Kirtimayi Mishra, the director of Catholic Relief Services in India.

“The Human Face of India” is at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 in Room AS-158 on the main campus in Romeoville. The event is free and open to the public.

Mishra will share her personal story and how participation in the Lenten program CRS Rice Bowl makes a lasting difference to the work of stopping hunger and poverty around the world. She will put a face on the people CRS serves every year.

Mishra leads the CRS Disaster Preparedness and Community Resilience program in India.

As a native Indian, she has worked with CRS since 2001 dedicated to serving communities who have been hit hard by natural disasters.

She will speak about how CRS and the Catholic Church in India provide life-changing programs to vulnerable communities in the most disaster stricken and hungry states of India.

The Lewis University CRS Student Ambassadors, a chapter of Catholic Relief Services, is hosting the event. CRS Ambassadors is a student organization that educates students about contemporary global issues, serve the poor and marginalized, and advocate for the rights and dignity people around the world.

The group discusses global issues, plans on-campus events, writes advocacy letters, and develops plans toward building a more peaceful and just society.

Now in its 42nd year, CRS Rice Bowl is one of the most popular Lenten programs in the U.S. practiced by close to 14,000 Catholic churches and schools.

The program is known for its expansive collection of resources for families, teachers, catechists, and ministers for the entire Lenten season. CRS Rice Bowl is global in its reach, bringing tangible goods and services to people in need around the world.

Bolingbrook’s Herrera shows off his wrestling ability at the state meet

CHAMPAIGN — Coming into Bolingbrook High School four years ago, Isaiah Herrera was not an athlete.

On the suggestion of friends, he attended the Raiders’ open mat and the rest is history.

“I had some friends that were wrestling and they told me to come to open mats and I didn’t know because I wasn’t very athletic,” I was in the middle school playing in band and I am still in it – but I became athletic.”

So, while he has not given up the French Horn, Herrera has added another line to his list of accomplishments — IHSA Class 3A state qualifier at 195 pounds.

“I am a state qualifier now. It is with my name and I have a helluva heart,” he said. “It was intense. I pushed through all my abilities

and had dogfights. I feel that if people were talking crap, I showed them.”

While earning a medal was his ultimate goal, Herrera knows what he did was an accomplishment – especially coming from where he started.

“This is an unbelievable experience and I got to live it. I go to be on those mats, under those lights,” he said. “I had to embrace the grind and I came a long way.”

Herrera opened the tournament with a 13-7 win over Dalton Hambrock of Machesney Park Harlem.

He was then defeated by eventual state champion Patrick Brucki of Sandburg 12-2.

Herrera advanced through the opening round of wrestlebacks via medical forfeit over Michael Milito of Maine South before falling 4-3 to O’Fallon’s Kobey Bosworth, leaving him one match shy of earning SEE MULTI PAGE 11

Raiders suffer first loss of the season

Since the Illinois High School Association Boys Basketball Tournament began 110 years ago

there have been 17 undefeated state champions.

Bolingbrook will not be the 18th.

The Raiders had won their first 23 games of the season, but they

didn’t complete an undefeated regular season. That’s because a final rally fell just short last weekend and Bolingbrook lost 65-64 to Lincoln-Way East on Friday, Feb. 17 in a SouthWest Suburban

Conference Blue Division battle in Frankfort.

Sam Shafer scored a careerhigh 30 points and added a gamehigh 13 rebounds for LincolnWay East (18-10, 5-4), which celebrated Senior Night and finished undefeated at home (8-0) on the season and gave registered its second highest win total in school history behind the 19-win team in the 2002-03 season.

Nana Akenten (22 points, 9 rebounds) paced Bolingbrook (23-1, 8-1), which played without 6-foot-6 senior forward Malik Binns, who was “banged-up” according to coach Rob Brost.

The Raiders, who had already clinched the SWSC Blue title, placed third in the state in Class 4A two years ago. They came in not only ranked No. 1 in the state, they were ranked in the top 20 in the Nation.

But Brost kept the whole thing in perspective. State championships aren’t won in February.

“It’s fine,” he said. “If you would have told me before the season

that we’d be 23-1, I would have signed up for that. We don’t worry about the pressure [of being undefeated]. We’ve got guys banged up [including Binns], but we just have to come out to play like we should.”

There were certainly spots where the Raiders played excellent basketball. But, in a a game of wild momentum swings, there were also moments they did not.

Lincoln-Way East led 65-56 when Shafer scored his final point of the night on a free throw with 1:29 to play in the game.

But starting at the minute mark, sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu (4 steals) - who scored all 14 of his points in the second half and had 12 of them in the fourth quarter, hit back-to-back 3-pointers - the last with 49 seconds to play, to pull the Raiders within 65-62.

Dorian Aluyi (13 points, 7 rebounds), was fouled with 15.2 seconds left. But the East senior forward missed both free throws and the Raiders rebounded, but had no timeouts left. Cochran missed a shot and everyone went for the ball with a couple of tips toward the basket finally resulting in the ball going out of bounds to the ‘Brook with 1.5 seconds remaining.

East stood its ground on defense, and the Raiders nearly committed a 5-second violation before throwing a long inbound pass to Cochran nearly 30 feet away on the left wing. He got a good look at the shot, but it hit off the rim as time expired and many of the large Griffin student body stormed the court in celebration.

“This was an amazing game for us to beat the 19th-ranked school in the nation.” said Shafer, who is a junior guard. “It went down to the wire and this was great for our momentum that we beat the No. 1 team in the state.”

The final play didn’t exactly go the way Bolingbrook drew it up.

“We didn’t execute what we wanted,” Brost said of the final inbounds play. We tried to run a lob play, but East’s defense was very good and they took it away.”

Bolingbrook certainly looked like the top team in the state early on, jumping out to a 13-0 lead just over three minutes into the

The other state qualifier for Bolingbrook was junior Dylan Burnoski at 126.

Burnoski fell in the opening round 6-0 to Trevor Chumbley of Marmion Academy.

As Herrera leaves the program, he is hoping the young Raiders follow his path to the state finals.

“A loss is hard, but you can always recover from it and not worry about the what-ifs,” he said. “I want the young kids to enjoy it and have fun with it. This is the most fun you are going to have in high school. The only time you should ever beat yourself up is at practice - other than that, have fun. If you are not having fun with it – you shouldn’t be doing it.”

But 16 seconds later junior guard Sam Coverick scored his only points of the game on a 3-pointer. That proved to be an important basket as it seemed to spark the Griffins and started a 9-0 run. Still Bolingbrook led 2112 after one quarter.

Down 24-14 just over a minute into the second quarter, junior guard Joey Buggemi (7 points) scored two points and Shafer had 11 points - including a 4-point play with 26.6 seconds left in the first half to cut the Raider advantage to 29-27 at halftime.

Five different Lincoln-Way East players contributed in a 12-2 burst to open the third quarter for a 39-31 lead with 3:32 left in the quarter. But Akenten, a senior forward, scored 10 points including a 3-pointer just before the third quarter buzzer, to tie the game at 43-43 after three.

But Bolingbrook’s momentum was short lived as Aluyi and Shafer each scored seven points in a 14-0 blitz that opened the fourth quarter. Shafer capped off the run and sent the Griffin fans into a tizzy by converting a rebound basket off his own miss for a 5743 lead with 4:49 to play in the game.

But about a minute before that, with 5:42 left in the game, Aluyi nailed a 3-pointer. That gave him a thousand points in his varsity career, which started at LincolnWay North before he moved to East when North closed at the end of the last school year.

“We just had to stay together and put points together,” Aluyi

said. It’s just exciting to beat a great Bolingbrook team. I love going up against Nana [Akenten].

He’s my favorite player to go up against, he gets me ready for the next level.”

The Raiders, who also received eight points and seven rebounds from senior center Brandon Lawani, started chipping away when Yesufu scored on a layup with 4:07 remaining. Those were the first of 21 points over the next span of 3:47. But in the end East hung on for the 1-point win.

We pushed very well at the end, but it shouldn’t have come down to that,” Broast said. “We didn’t attack the rim and missed a number of chances to score points.

Win or lose, our thoughts were to go back to practice and try to get better.

“I’m proud of the way the guys fought back, but give East credit.

They’re undefeated in their building for a reason, they’re good. Still this is a blip on the radar, we’ll be fine.”

The postseason opens next

week and the Raiders are the top seed at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional. They open play in the Sandburg Regional on Tuesday, Feb. 28 against the winner of the Yorkville - Lincoln-Way West game from the night before. The regional title game is slated for Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m.

The Griffins are seeded No. 6 in the sectional, but if they can pull of an upset in the regional - likely against No. 3 seeded and host Joliet Central, they will get to host the sectional on their home court.

Don’t rely on pharmacies to catch drug interactions Pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted When you fill a prescription at your local pharmacy, you assume the medicine you receive is safe and won’t interact badly with other drugs you’re taking.

That’s not an unreasonable assumption, considering that pharmacists enjoy a positive reputation among the public. A recent Gallup poll found that pharmacists are among the most trusted professionals ranking second only to nurses.

But pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted.

The results of an investigation published by the Chicago Tribune before Christmas showed that patients may be in danger after all.

The paper sent reporters to more than 200 pharmacies in the Chicago area, ranging from small neighborhood drug stores to those operated by large national chains.

Fifty-two percent of the pharmacies they visited failed to warn patients that a pair of drugs, if taken together, could result in serious potential harm, even death.

The Tribune called its findings “striking evidence of an industry-wide failure that places millions of consumers at risk.”

No doubt the poor practices uncovered in Chicago are common in other places. Twenty years earlier, in 1996, U.S. News & World Report published a lengthy study that found as the Tribune did that pharmacists failed to warn their patients of dangerous interactions.

Back then, the magazine sent reporters to pharmacies in seven cities and found that “well over half failed to warn consumers when presented with prescriptions for drugs, that, when taken separately are safe but when taken together can be risky at best and at worst deadly.”

What was striking to me was that in 20 years not much has changed in the pharmacy business, and unaware patients are still at risk.

In 1996 a spokesperson for the American Pharmaceutical Association

You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know - as I found out ...” told U.S. News reporters about ongoing financial turmoil in the retail drug business.

Chains had begun to crowd out independents, HMOs were cutting their reimbursements, and pharmacists were under greater stress.

A spokesman for the American Pharmaceutical Association said the profession was “looking at a re-engineering of the whole profession.”

Fast forward to now. Was there really a re-engineering given what the Tribune found in its investigation last year?

Since findings from the two studies are similar, I’m skeptical.

A vice president of CVS pharmacy told the Tribune, “There is a very high sense of urgency to pursue this issue and get to the root cause.” My question: Why wasn’t there such urgency 20 years ago?

There still appears to be little protection for patients who have no idea whether a particular combination of drugs they take will kill them.

While many pharmacies do have computer programs that alert them when a patient is being prescribed drugs that may interact badly, John Norton, director of public relations for the National Community Pharmacists Association, told me pharmacists

sometimes fail to heed the warnings.

They may be suffering from what he called “alert fatigue.” In other words pharmacists get so many alerts that they fail to comprehend them all, and something slips through. As the Tribune found, those slips are far too common.

Where does this leave patients?

You should still ask the pharmacist to check your records to make sure a new drug doesn’t interact badly with others you take. You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know as I found out.

My doctor continued to prescribe Cipro for traveler’s diarrhea for years even though it reduces the effectiveness of another medication I’ve been taking for decades.

I learned about this only recently at an urgent care clinic where a doctor refused to prescribe Cipro because of the possible interaction.

Nor can you always rely on those leaflets put in the bags the pharmacist gives you.

The information you get may be supplied by outside vendors, says Larry Sasich, who is the co-founder of Patient Drug News and co-authored the 2005 best selling book, “Worst Pills, Best Pills” with Dr. Sidney Wolfe who headed Public Citizen’s Health Research Group for many years.

Sasich says the best information about when a drug should not be used can be found on a drug’s FDAapproved professional product label on the DailyMed website (https:// dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/) sponsored by the National Library of Medicine.

At the end of each label is the “Medication Guide” the FDA requires for some 200 drugs – many heavily advertised.

The agency requires those labels if it believes information is necessary to prevent serious adverse side effects and when patients need to know about any known and serious side effects.

You can also ask the pharmacist for the professional product label. I asked mine for Cipro’s label. He handed me a tiny, tightly wrapped packet, and said, “You’re not supposed to see this unless you ask.”

My advice: Ask! What problems have you or a family member had with drug interactions?

Plus, we don’t have much in savings, and we’re behind on our house payments. Do you have any advice?

PAIGE DEAR PAIGE, First of all, you and your husband have to get on the same page financially.

Sit down together, and do a household budget and a profit and

loss statement on the business.

A profit and loss statement will tell you the money that comes in minus the money that goes out.

Here’s the thing. If you’re putting other money into a business account, that’s a clue that you’re not making money on the business.

Put his rent, supplies and any other business expenses on the profit and loss list, and write out — step by step — what it will take for you to break even in the business each month.
