District to offer approach to summer Summer Learning Experience (SLE), an elementary summer programming initiative began in 2012

Despite the success of Valley View School District 365u’s Summer Learning Experience program, low enrollment is forcing the district to no longer continue it.

The Summer Learning Experience (SLE), an elementary summer programming initiative began in 2012, offering students in grades K through 5, a low-cost enrichmentbased summer school program.

The idea for the program was to help diminish the loss of learning which inevitably occurs over the summer break.

Throughout the years , the program was offered at various schools based on enrollment projections.

However an average of only 5 percent of the student population took advantage of the program, leading the district to now look at alternatives to offer its students for summer learning.

Parent input from those in attendance for the SLE 2014-2015 school year mainly chose the program to continue academic work over the summer, be in an environment for enrichment and was used as a good child care opportunity, according to Adam Hurder, executive director for educational services Pre-K-5.

“Essentially we want to continue

to look at the main motivations for families attending and make sure we are addressing these same motivations going forward,” said Hurder.

Families will be informed of free summer resources for continuing learning at home utilizing free access to online tools for math and literacy, tools students currently use in the classroom. Such academic resources include Greg Tang Math, Dreambox math, Reflex Math, NewsELA, Starfall, Achieve 3000, and Khan Academy.

“These are all researched-based programs we believe strongly in as they are already part of our curriculum and can be used to continue their academic success throughout the summer,” said Hurder.

In addition, there are a significant number of resources available

including those offered by local park districts and townships with a similar fee structure to SLE, such as its day camps and summer bridge programs.

The district also plans to shift its focus to key transitions within the district: the first, identifying the need to proactively support the transition from home or preschool to kindergarten. A district-wide tracking of social-emotional data shows a rapid increase in concerns at kindergarten.

“We know that the earlier we can support a student, the more effective the long-term outcomes will be, not just in kindergarten but years later,” said Hurder.

BJ Ward Elementary currently has been offering a summer bridge program for kindergarten and administration believes the program

sets its students up for success for the entire year.

The district is proposing to build upon Ward’s success and open a Kindergarten Summer Bridge Program to all 12 elementary schools.

The goal is to help children and families understand and begin to meet the academic and social expectations of a kindergarten student.

“There is a large aspect of the program that involves parents and families at an early stage and encourages time for us to screen students before school begins, allowing us to intervene as early as possible if our students need some help,” said Hurder.

“I absolutely have no doubt that this is and will be an outstanding program, anyone who doesn’t see the benefit to it, I don’t what you’re thinking,” said School Board Member Diane Parro, who also questioned how it would be funded and who would be running the program.

Title 1 funds were used at BJ Ward and the program would be taught by Valley View educators.

A committee has been formed of administrators, educators and parents to design the specifics of the program and the resources needed for teachers and families.

To date, the program will aim for a broad-reaching approaching to impact as many incoming students as possible and be provided for half-days, one week prior to the start of the school year.

Further information will be shared with the community once developed.

“I always look forward to the opportunity to speak to residents on a number of topics, from workforce development and community ser-

vice to education,” Manley said. “I learned quite a bit from the people who stopped by, and I look forward to engaging residents I will meet at future coffee and conversation events.”

Manley has planned two coffee and conversation events per month for 2017, as part of her goal to connect with constituents from every part of her district.

Honey-Jam Café is newest S.T.E.P. community partner Visitors to Honey-Jam Café may have noticed a new face on the Bolingbrook restaurant’s team lately. She’s Adrianna Venegas, a student in Valley View’s Secondary Transition Experience Program (S.T.E.P.), and thanks to the generosity of Honey-Jam Chief Operating Officer Kirk Mauriello, she is enjoying the benefits of STEP’s successful community work program.

“Our program is designed to help our students learn skills that they can take into the community to obtain employment when they leave us,” said STEP Transition Specialist Kelly Walsh.

“When I heard about the program, I immediately thought that our culture at Honey-Jam Café would be a perfect fit for a young person looking to learn and be part of something,” Mauriello said.

The 20-year-old Venegas was one of three STEP students who went through a “performance tryout” designed to give students a chance to see if they like it while giving community partners an opportunity to make sure they’ve made the right decision.

“Adrianna knocked it out of the park,” Walsh said.

“She was a perfect fit for us,” Mauriello added. “We were looking for an eager and energetic student who could fit in with our team of employees.”

Venegas puts in four-hour days, three days a week preparing items for the kitchen staff, labeling and boxing items. She has high hopes of becoming a server or hostess at some point.

“I told them I would work wherever they wanted me to,” she said.

“I’m everywhere. I like it. They’re very nice. We treat each other like family. I can’t believe this is happening to me.”

“Adrianna is working out great.

She is always smiling and always willing to help any staff with any tasks,” Mauriello said. “She completes her work on time and in an expedient manner. She gets along great with our staff, and the fact that she speaks Spanish is a plus.”

More than a dozen of the roughly 100 STEP students hold paying jobs in the community similar to Venegas’ job.

“We would like all of our students who are able to have paid employment when they leave us,” Walsh said, adding that the program would love to have more community partners come forward with new positions, something Mauriello heartily recommends.

“I think all businesses have opportunities that they could offer these young adults. They bring a different perspective to hard work and eagerness to learn in the workplace,” he said. “I hope that we can find a couple more positions for these individuals as our business grows.”

Cold shooting night ends Brooks 7th grade basketball season Brooks Middle School’s 7th grade boys basketball squad couldn’t overcome a poor shooting performance Thursday afternoon as Rotolo Middle School of Batavia upset the top-seeded Bulldogs 3622 in the IESA regional finale.

Brooks (18-3) never lead in the contest with the winners sprinting to an early 5-0 lead before Matthew Langit’s 3-pointer got the Bulldogs on the board with 3:32 left in the first quarter. A Samarian Head putback and Mateo Askew’s layup off a nifty pass by Kyle Thomas made it 8-7 but that was as close as Brooks got.

Rotolo (16-3) led 18-13 at halftime and built a 26-13 advantage in the third quarter as Brooks went scoreless until Head and Thomas registered a pair of put-backs with 2 minutes to go.

The Bullldogs frantically tried to rally in the final stanza when a Jaydin Dunlap free throw and Jayden Cummings’ steal and layup made it 30-20 with 4:25 left. But they couldn’t pull any closer.

Askew led Brooks with 8 points and two steals. Head added 4 points and 6 rebounds. Langit and Dunlap chopped in with 3 points each.

Athletes ready to bring message to Winter Games More than 2,600 athletes to compete at the 2017 World Winter Games for Special Olympics in Austria

As of Feb. 1, there are 41 days remaining until more than 2,600 athletes compete at the 2017 World Winter Games for Special Olympics in Austria. Among them, our national team, Special Olympics USA, will send a 210-member delegation to represent the United States at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games on March 14-25, in Graz, Ramsau, Schladming, and Styria, Austria.

Among them is my friend and fellow Special Olympics athlete Jamiah Shepard, of South Holland. Jamiah will compete in snowshoeing on Special Olympics USA. Jamiah was diagnosed with an intellectual disability at an early age and does not let any of her challenges get in the way of her accomplishments including receiving a Sportsmanship award at Thornwood High School, being a three-time state basketball champion, and competing in the pentathlon for the first time at Illinois’ 2016 Summer Games. In all, Jamiah has competed in pentathlon, track and field, basketball, snowshoe, gymnastics, cheerleading, and bocce.

Jamiah’s favorite part of competing in Special Olympics is, “getting a gold and having good competition against somebody,” said Jamiah.

Local Special Olympics staff had their eyes on Jamiah at a recent state Winter Games held in Galena. A year ago, they selected Jamiah to run for Special Olympics USA at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.

Jamiah is joined by 149 other athletes on Special Olympics USA. Our national delegation includes traditional Special Olympics athletes and also Special Olympics Unified Sports teams, where people with and without intellectual disabilities train and compete together, as teammates.

Biannually, athletes go beyond geographic boundaries, nationality, gender, age, culture, religion, and political philosophy to come together for the flagship event of the Special Olympics movement: the Special Olympics World Games. This event brings a much-

By Daniel Smrokowski needed message to our communities: a message of equality; a message of tolerance; and, a message of acceptance around the globe. About 15 years ago when I began competing in Special Olympics, my mom, Linda Smrokowski, 65, attended her first Special Olympics event. It was at this moment that she perfectly stated the effect of the Special Olympics movement.

“If the whole world were like Special Olympics, then there would be no wars,” said my mom. “The movement brings out the best in everybody.”

According to the press release from Special Olympics USA that was released two weeks ago, this is expected to be the largest Special Olympics World Winter Games in history. An estimated 2,600 athletes from 106 nations will be competing in Austria in 9 Olympic-type sports at these 2017 Special Olympics World Games: floor hockey, stick shooting, figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing, and snowshoeing.

ESPN, the global television network and digital media organization, is to produce extensive coverage for sport fans and supporters of the Special Olympics movement around the globe. This coverage is said to be the first-ever coverage for a World Winter Games event. As the official broadcaster of Special Olympics, the television coverage can be seen on ESPN’s television networks in the U.S. and streamed through WatchESPN and on the ESPN App. While at the training camp in Vermont for Special Olympics USA, ESPN had their eyes on the amazing athletes who were preparing for the once-in-alifetime opportunity.

“They [ESPN] were stalking me for Vermont,” said Jamiah. ESPN reporters were interviewing a few of the athletes who will be featured as part of the comprehensive coverage in Austria.

Jamiah is not sure if she will be featured on ESPN as the large sports television media network will select the featured

athletes once they arrive in Austria on March 12.

There are only a couple hundred Special Olympics athletes, like Jamiah, who have the opportunity to represent the United States at a Special Olympics World Winter Games. This is a unique honor to both represent our country with one’s athletic abilities and to demonstrate one’s joy to the world.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these athletes to demonstrate their athletic abilities, competing at the highest level on the world stage, and to have life and cultural experiences that will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” said Chris Hahn, Head of Delegation for Special Olympics USA, in a press release statement. “I encourage every American to cheer on these inspiring athletes, to share in their triumphs and to take pride in knowing that they will represent our country with excellence and honor.”

Jamiah is most looking forward to competing against other people from the 106 countries. Admitting the excitement of competing at the World Games, she is also a little bit scared of this opportunity.

Bolingbrook’s Acosta, Romeoville’s Hubbs both finish among top IHSA boys bowlers

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS — Bolingbrook’s Alex Acosta finished a strong three weeks of bowling by advancing to finals of the IHSA state meet over the weekend at St. Clair Bowl.

The junior finished in 34th place with a 2,537 total, just over 100 pins out of earning All-State honors.

“It would have meant a lot,” Acosta said of making All-State.

“I always have next year. It is a learning experience. It is a little disappointing.”

Last year, he took 46th place in the finals, so he was able to improve his finish this year.

“I learned a lot from last year,” Acosta said. “I was more comfortable this year.”

On Saturday Acosta started the day slow with a 165, but he came back to throw a 607 series and added a 647 series in the af-

ternoon.

Acosta made it to finals after shooting a 1,284 Friday, good for 36th place. He was on fire, shooting a 692 in the morning with a 255 game before rolling a 592 in the afternoon.

“It was ok,” Acosta said. “I couldn’t string any strikes together in the last game. I’m happy I advanced. I made more spares than last year.”

In his first appearance at state, Romeoville’s Jacob Hubbs was also able to make it to finals, finishing in 48th place with a 2,474 total.

“I can’t describe how I feel.

It feels absolutely amazing,” Hubbs said. “Missing state by a little every year up to this year, this is surreal. I could have probably done a lot of stuff better, but it is what it is. This is the highlight of my career.”

Spartans hold off league foe Steelmen

The Romeoville girls basketball team hopes the “rollercoaster” continues to head upwards as the postseason approaches.

In a matchup of two Southwest Prairie Conference teams looking for a victory the Spartans outlasted Joliet Central 48-41 on Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Joliet.

Brittany Osborne (13 points, 7 steals , 5 rebounds) had 11 points in the second half to lead the Spartans (10-13, 4-6). Joliet Central (6-14, 1-9) was paced

by a game-high 14 points and 15 rebounds from sophomore guard Shawton Brown, who had 12 points in the fourth quarter.

“It’s been a rollercoaster ride,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said of the season. “Yet we still gained double digit wins [with the victory over the Steelmen] and that’s with starting two freshmen. We’ve started three freshmen at times this season.

We want to turn that corner and we hope this [victory over Joliet Central] was it.”

Romeoville led 17-11 at halftime, but the Steelmen quickly cut the lead to 17-15 on a Brown

free throw and a 3-pointer by junior guard Deericka Martin (6 points) with 6:24 left in the third quarter. But 46 seconds later Osborne converted a turnover into a layup.

That started a 15-2 blitz the rest of the quarter for a 32-17 lead after three. Osborne, a junior guard had six points in the spurt and freshman guard Karina Ortiz (11 points) added five in the spurt.

“Brittany had four steals and Karina had six,” said Carasco of the third quarter alone, during which his squad forced 12 turnovers. “Our offense is predicated

from the defensive side and we did a great job there.”

Those 12 turnovers were nearly half of the 25 the Steelmen made in the game. All of Romeoville’s points in the third quarter came on layups or free throws.

“It was a domino effect,” Osborne said of the third quarter. “One person makes a play and everyone does it. We just have to go up from here. We’re climbing the mountain, we just have to stay on top.”

Behind 35-18 with less than five minutes to play and still down 39-25 with 3:06 to play in the game, things looked grim for the Steelmen. But there was no quit in them as they went on a 9-1 run in a 58 second span to close within 40-34 on a 3-pointer by Martin with 1:42 remaining.

But they never got closer.

Romeoville hit 6-of-10 free throws and Osborne had a steal and layup in the final 1:20 to help close it out.

Although they were on the losing end, the Steelmen certainly never quit, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter, 23 of those in the final 4:57. Brown had 12 of those points. They defeated a highly regarded Bloom Township team 55-45 on Jan. 17, but haven’t won since.

“We missed so many layups and so many free throws to start,” Joliet Central coach Laura Brumfiel said. “The last few games we’ve struggled. We had layups and putback attempts and we have to convert.

“Give Romeoville credit too, but we were aggressive. In the fourth quarter we had two choices and we choose not to give up.

We choose to play hard and play through it. That’s always the way Shawton Brown plays, all out and aggressive. We have a group of great kids and they are very coachable and play hard.”

Lewis women’s 1990s All-Decade team The Lewis University Athletics Department introduced the All-Decades Women’s Basketball Team from the 1990s on Jan. 28.

The team includes Stacy Alexander, Heather Compton, Julie Giles, Kellie Harmas, LaRita Harrington, Carey Jewell, Joy King, Bonnie Richrath, Jackie Wayne and Brenda Wegrzyn.

“The Lewis women’s basketball team has had a rich tradition,” Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek said. “Bringing these women back to campus recognizes their contributions to the program.”

STACY ALEXANDER (1994-98) Alexander, who was a starter on the 1998 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, is 10th in school history for career rebounds with 696 and also finished with 615 points. Her 6.4 rebounds-per-game average is the 10th best in school history.

Lakes Valley Conference Honorable Mention team, Giles finished her career with 814 points, 395 assists (9th all-time) and 237 steals (5th all-time). Her 573 career rebounds is the 13th most in school history.

LARITA HARRINGTON (1993-96) In three seasons, Harrington finished with 686 points and 297 rebounds for the Flyers.

Compton was a solid allaround player who amassed 678 points, 359 rebounds, 225 assists and 123 steals in her four year career. She also knocked down 55 three-pointers as a Flyer.

One of the most decorated players in Lewis history, Jewell was a four-time All-GLVC selection with two first team selections in 1998 and 2000, second team in 1999 and Honorable Mention in 1997. She led the team in scoring in each of her four seasons and finished her career with 1,850

Richrath, who was inducted into the Lewis Hall of Fame in 2001, is 11th in school history with 1,309 points. She is a twotime All-GLVC selection, earning Second Team honors in 1993 and Honorable Mention accolades in 1992. She is fifth in school history with 173 made three-pointers and made 41.9% of her long range attempts, good for third in school history.

JACKIE WAYNE (1987-91) Wayne recorded 825 points and

680 rebounds during her stint in Romeoville. Her 94 career blocks is 7th in school history and her 680 rebounds is 11th in school history.

BRENDA WEGRZYN (1991-95) A 1995 All-GLVC Honorable Mention selection, Wegrzyn finished her career with 1,127 points which was good for 14th in school history. Her 802 career rebounds is the sixth most caroms in school history and her 7.8 rebounds-per-game is fourth in school history.

Miranda leads Flyers Lewis University men’s track and field team competed in the Mike Lints Open at Grand Valley State University and finished ninth overall with 27.83 points.

Among the Flyers their top performance came from Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) who finished third in the 3000 meter finishing the race in 8:25.31 which was enough for him to earn a provisional qualifying mark.

• The Lewis University women’s track and field team traveled to Grand Valley State University Saturday (Jan. 28) and were able to finish out the Mike Lints Open in third place.

The Flyers finished with 61 points.

For Lewis there were a number of top performances that earned provisional qualifying marks. Of those Flyers were Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) took first in the shot put with a 46’ 01 1/2” throw. Zoe Mead (Princeton, Ill./ Princeton) won first in the 600 meter run finishing the race in 1:34.6.

Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) also won first in the long jump with an 18’ 7” leap. Allie Heinzer also earned a provisional mark after finishing third in the 400 meter dash. Keanu Taylor also

finished the meet with a provisional mark in the triple jump thanks to her second place earning 38’ 02 3/4” jump.

VOLLEYBALL Lewis University’s six-match winning streak came to an end as Grand Canyon collected the 25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association victory over the No. 6 Flyer men’s volleyball team at Antelope Gym on Sunday (Jan. 29).

The loss comes two days after the Flyers handed Grand Canyon a five-game defeat.

Lewis freshman outside hitter Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, Calif./ Homestead) recorded a matchhigh 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .419 (17 kills, 4 errors, 31 attacks) to lead the Flyers. Senior middle blocker John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit .583 (8-1-12) along with a teambest five block assists.

Flyer redshirt sophomore opposite hitter Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) notched 16 kills, while redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) collected 11 putaways.

Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo

Camarillo) dished out 52 assists, while redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley) had a teambest seven digs.

With the win, Grand Canyon improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in MIVA action, while the Flyers fall to 6-2 on the campaign and 1-1 in conference play.

Lewis hit .364 (61-18-118), but the Flyers were outdug by the Lopes, 36-28, and also committed 19 service errors. Grand Canyon had a hitting percentage of .366 (64-19-123).

BASKETBALL The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Jan. 30) that Lewis University sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) has been selected as the GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending January 29th.

This is the fifth time in her career that Kelliher has won this award and third time overall this season.

Kelliher averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds-per-game, while shooting 78.3% (18-for-23) from the field in victories over both McKendree (Jan. 26) and Illinois Springfield (Jan. 28).

Insurance guy is not a financial advisor DEAR DAVE, My husband was recently laid off, and he has $229,000 in a 401(k).

He has been told that he should roll it into a hybrid annuity. Is this a good idea?

DURNAE DEAR DURNAE, Absolutely not! It sounds to me like he’s been talking to an insurance agent instead of an investment advisor. There’s no reason to put a 401(k) into an annuity. Annuities are there to protect money, as it grows, from taxes. Well, guess what? The 401(k) is already protecting it from taxes.

I would roll it into a traditional IRA in a series of growth stock mutual funds. You’ll have half the fees, the advisor won’t make anywhere near the commission he’d make on an annuity, and you’ll get much better results in the end.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t go the annuity route. I don’t have a single annuity, and I’ve got a lot of

investments. One of the reasons so many “advisors” push annuities is because they wind up with bigger commissions. Annuities aren’t evil or anything, but they’re definitely not the proper product for you in this situation.

Get away from the guy who gave you this advice, and find a good financial advisor — not an insurance guy — with the heart of a teacher.

You need to talk to someone who’s interested in helping you two plan for your future, not theirs!
