Development on pace for State of village More than $200 million was added to the village’s value and with it an additional 2,300 jobs

BY BUGLE STAFF Romeoville continues to embrace development and increase job growth, making 2016 a banner year and promises for the same in 2017.

Mayor John Noak recently presented the annual State of the Village Address sponsored by the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce to a record-breaking crowd.

Thanks to development in both retail and industrial, more than $200 million was added to the village’s value and with it an additional 2,300 jobs—the village’s largest job growth in a single year on record.

According to Noak, the revenue generated by the development has assisted in keeping the villages portion of the residential property taxes low, with residents paying less in 2016 then in 2007. In addition, the village has been able to more than double its cash on hand since 2008, allowing it to fund village projects.

Noak said the coming year is anticipated to be equally successful with more recreation opportunities, transportation enhancement projects, major corridor improvements and additional jobs.

fields in conjunction with the newly reconstructed Joliet Junior College. Together the two projects will create more than 45 acres of new recreational opportunities and space. Transportation highlights

included a corridor improvement plan along Route 53, construction of the Metra station set to begin in April, and an update on the I55 Weber Road Interchange project.

In conclusion, Noak hinted to-

ward additional projects that the village was unable to announce, but are anticipated for 2017.

During the address, Noak also presented various community awards including the Citizen of the Year Award, presented to Art Arellano for his community involvement.

“Volunteers are critical to the success of any organization. We are fortunate to have individuals such as Art in our community,” said Noak. “Art volunteers for numerous organizations, some of which include the Historical Society, American Legion, Beautification Committee and Romeoville Fire Auxiliary.

Romeoville High School was given a Special Recognition Award for their academic achievements as well as their community involvement. During the presentation, Noak highlighted numerous recognitions the school has received over the last year, including being named as one of the Nation’s Top High Schools with similar criteria for 2016 by U.S. News and World Reports. In addition to their academic achievements, Noak commended the students for their volunteer efforts and for raising more than $35,000 for cancer research.

The award was accepted by Principal Derek Kinder.

Within their first year in business, they debuted their first two bottled beers. Noak said, although running a business for the first year is time consuming, that did not stop the ownership from finding time to raise funds to aid local residents in need. When receiving the award, Owner Dan Camp said that they were very honored and look forward to residents seeing their beer on tap in more local establishments.

Summer Day Camp at Camp Kata Kani This year’s camp will run for 11 weeks, beginning May 30 and running through August 18 Camp Fire Illinois Prairie has announced that registration is now open for its 2017 Summer Day Camp at Camp Kata Kani in Bolingbrook. This year’s camp will run for eleven weeks, beginning Memorial Day week (May 30) and running through August 18. The theme for the 2017 Day Camp is “Camp Fire–Yours to Explore.”

Each camp week will have an individual theme, from “Welcome to Camp” and “Let the Games Begin!” to “Natural Explorers” and “To the Moon and Back.”

To register campers, or if they have questions, parents can call the Camp Fire Illinois Prairie office at 630-629-5160. They can also register online at the council’s web site, www.campfireusa-illinois.org.

Camp Fire has been able to maintain this year’s weekly camper fee at $115, the 2016 fee. Shorter holiday weeks are priced at $93 for the Memorial Day week and $70 for the Fourth of July week. There is also a $5 per week discount for each additional sibling registered.

The camp day begins at 9 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. For those working parents unable to drop off and pick up children during regular hours, Camp Fire Illinois Prairie also offers a day care option that lets parents drop off campers between 7 and 9 a.m. and pick them up between 4 and 6 p.m. These campers will be with counselors during these early and late times.

The fee for this additional service is $35 per week ($7.00 per day during the shorter weeks).

Each full five-day camp week includes a field trip to a fun or an exciting educational site linked to that week’s theme. Past summers

have included trips to a wolf sanctuary, swimming pool, nature conservatory, etc. This year’s trips are currently in the process of being finalized.

Camp Kata Kani was first opened in a copse of mature oak trees among farm fields in 1956, before Bolingbrook was incorporated. It has held a day camp for most summers since. It focuses on offering a “real” camp experience, with a wide range of outdoor physical activities, and incorporates Camp Fire’s highly-respected quality educational programs into the camp day.

The Camp Fire mission is to help young people find their spark— the passion, values and sense of self-worth that will enable them to become confident adults and contributing members of their communities. Camp Fire programs provide a nurturing, constructive and fun environment inspiring youth to adopt a growth mindset. They learn to chart their own course towards healthy habits, leadership, and a connection to nature.

As an inclusive youth service organization Camp Fire also helps youth engage with the exceptional people around them, regardless of race, color, gender or religion.

FEBRUARY 1 Luis Rosado, 24, of Bolingbrook, was charged with criminal damage to property after breaking a vehicle window with a bat on lot D of Fernwood Dr. at 3:22 a.m.

Deadrick Smith, 30, and Kashmre Clemons, 22, both of Bolingbrook, were charged with in-state warrants on the 300 block of Whitewater Drive at 12:01 a.m.

A set of keys were taken from an unsecured locker on the 100 block of S. Bolingbrook Dr. between 4:45 and 5:55 p.m. The victim’s vehicle in the parking lot was also rummaged through and a GPS was taken.

Officers responded to the 200 block of N. Bolingbrook Drive for the report of a burglary to motor vehicle. A scanner, GPS and backpack were taken from an unsecured vehicle between 4:50–5:50 p.m.

Diego Serna-Tejeda, 18, was charged with residential burglary and aggravated assault, following a call to the 200 block of Prairie Drive, for an unwanted subject inside with a knife at 6 p.m.

Demetrius Jenkins, 26, of Bolingbrook, was charged with no insurance, driving on a suspended license, improper turn, unlawful use of weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of ammunition, no firearm owner’s identification card and possession of controlled substance and Michael Grimm, 27, also of Bolingbrook, was charged with

resisting peace officer, driver safety belt violation, unlawful use of weapon by felon, unlawful possession of ammunition and no firearm owner’s identification card, following a traffic stop at Cumberland Lane and Springhill Drive at 12:02 a.m.

Changes may be coming to Medicare What’s going to happen to Medicare?

That’s not an insignificant question given the political shift in Washington.

Now, with Republicans controlling the presidency and both houses of Congress, some ideas they’ve been pushing for years have a chance of passing.

Those ideas would drastically change the way Medicare works for those already on it and those joining in the next few years.

Medicare is wildly popular, but that popularity doesn’t necessarily translate into understanding of a very complex program, what’s happened to it, and what may happen. Writing about Medicare for nearly 30 years and watching it evolve, I’ve seen how easily Congress has already made big changes with hardly a peep from the press or the public. The same could happen again. In this column I discuss a few of those possible changes gleaned from my decades of experience covering the program.

Since the election, there’s been talk of “voucherizing” or privatizing Medicare, an idea Republicans have been pushing for 20 years. Under a fully privatized arrangement Medicare would no longer be social insurance like Social Security but more like Obamacare with everyone eventually buying their coverage from private insurance companies.

Beneficiaries would receive a sum of money, likely to be called “premium support” instead of the more diresounding “voucher,” to help buy their coverage. The amount of support and how well it would keep pace with medical inflation would be buried in the details Congress would hash out.

Today, the government provides the benefits for hospital and physician care for most Medicare beneficiaries, but that could change with more privatization. There already is a lot of privatization in Medicare, and it came about

step-by-step - usually with both political parties in agreement and lots of buzz words like “consumer choice” to sell changes to the public.

The long steady march toward Medicare Advantage (MA) plans now used by about one-third of all beneficiaries and the prescription drug benefit are privatized insurance programs within Medicare. Seniors in MA plans give up their traditional, standardized Medicare benefits for doctor and hospital services and buy them from insurers that receive subsidies from the government.

In a totally privatized arrangement, there may be no standardized benefits, and seniors would choose from a menu of insurance company options much the way drug plans are sold today.

It’s too early to say whether Congress will push for premium support this year.

Democrats have already signaled they will fight back. It’s more likely that other changes could slip through that would radically alter Medicare and force beneficiaries to pay a lot more for their care.

One of them is a change in the rules on balance billing: physicians charging seniors and disabled people on the program more than what Medicare will pay. Most doctors accept Medicare’s payment as payment in full. Those who don’t can charge patients only 15 percent more than Medicare’s payment.

This limit offers protection against the high balance billing charges patients with other kinds of insurance are facing.

The nominee for Secretary of Health

and Human Services Tom Price is no fan of the 15 percent rule and once proposed eliminating it, which may explain why he has gotten such a strong endorsement from the American Medical Association. The AMA has called Price a leader in developing public policy to advance patient choice and “reduce excessive regulatory burdens.” Many doctors who work with Medicare patients would like to charge as much as they want.

Congress may try to shift costs another way. The objective is to reduce what the government pays for beneficiaries’ care by making them pay more themselves. One solution is to combine the deductibles for hospital and physician care into one, and impose an outof-pocket spending cap for beneficiaries still enrolled in traditional Medicare.

Two-thirds of beneficiaries are. Currently no such cap exists. (Seniors in MA plans do face such caps – last year as high as $6,700.)

If seniors in the traditional program also buy a Medigap plan, it’s possible they have what’s called “first dollar coverage.” That means medical expenses are covered from the beginning.

Congress has already begun to take that protection away. Beginning in 2020 insurers can no longer sell certain Medigap plans that provide for the first dollar coverage beneficiaries want. However, if you have such a policy, you can keep it.

Medicare does face some long-term funding shortfalls, and so far the acceptable solution is to require that seniors pay more rather than raise taxes for everyone or impose cost controls with teeth, which doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and other healthcare providers don’t want. I will explore all that, including negotiating pharmaceutical prices, in a future column.

Romeoville earns big win for young players on roster

When the Romeoville girls basketball team opened the season by losing two-year starter Jahari Smith to transfer, Spartans’ coach Julio Carrasco knew the team would be young and he was not expecting a doubledigit win season.

However, after a 45-37 win over No. 19 seed Plainfield Central in the quarterfinal of the Plainfield East Sectional, No. 15 Romeoville posted its 13th win of the season.

“We have a lot of freshmen up, it’s been five or six,” Carrasco said. “To have 13 wins is pretty

impressive. I wasn’t expecting this and the girls really stepped up.”

Two of those freshmen, Maria Picazo, Damia Patton stepped up and helped in the win.

“I thought all of our freshmen did a nice job. Maria did a tremendous job and Damia did a nice job,” Carrasco said.

Carrasco said the win is big for the confidence of the freshmen going forward.

Raiders move to 23-0 with win over H-F

Not only is the undefeated Bolingbrook basketball team the No. 1 team in the state, the Raiders have cracked the USA Today national top 25, however, the wins and accolades have not changed the attitude of the team.

“We constantly talk about being humble and grateful and grateful and humble,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “ That was evident after the Raiders’ 57-46 win over Homewood-Flossmoor in Flossmoor last week when the team treated it like just another game rather than the one of the final tasks en route to a perfect 25-0 regular season.

Junior guard Kaleb Thornton said the reason for the success of the team goes beyond just talent.

“Everyone talks about our talent and whatnot, but I think what makes us good is we are a family - a brotherhood,” he said.

“We come out here and play for each other instead of for our-

selves.

Senior Nana Akenten said that as a unit, the Raiders understand what is at stake and what they need to do to accomplish it.

“Everyone on the team understands that nothing is promised,” he said. “We work really hard every day in practice and we come and do what we are supposed to do and the results handkle themselves.

“We know that whatever we have achieved can be taken away just as fast and we got it, so we have to work towaward that end goal.”

With only two more games left in the season — Friday at Lincoln-Way East and Feb. 21 at home against Sandburg — that the Raiders need to stay in the same mindset they have now.

“We have to stay level headed because if we get too cocky, that is how big teams fall,” Akenten said.

In the win over H-F, Malik Binns led the way with 15 points, while Akenten and Tyer Cochran added 13.

Thornton and backcourt mate Joseph Yesufu chipped in eight apiece.

Romeoville’s Pulliam is Athlete of the Week Tuesday (Feb. 14) the Great Lakes Valley Conference honored Lewis University women’s track and field’s Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) with the Indoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

This is Pulliam’s third time being awarded this honor for the season.

Leading up to being named field athlete of the week Pulliam competed in the Chicagoland Championships contributing to the Flyers’ second place finish with 103.5.

In the meet Pulliam placed first in the triple jump with a 40’ 9”

It wasn’t only the young players that carried the Spartans to victory – two of the seniors stepped up big as well and Lexi Marin and Ayanna Shelby held the team together.

“Shelby ended up grabbing some rebounds and really taking control as a senior,” Carrasco said. “And Lexi, she has run the offense and has been in charge for four years. It was nice going from Abby (Smith) to her.

Lexi has done a tremendous job and she has been helping out the young kids and it is nice for her to be the glue.”

Romeoville did play the end of the game without junior Brittany Osborne, who suffered a non-contact injury to her knee late in the contest.

Carrasco said he did not expect Osborne to play in the sectional semifinal Feb. 14 against No. 2 Oswego East.

“Losing Britt was hard,” Carrasco said. “No matter what she is not going to play tomorrow, she is the heart and soul of the team and you hate to see that happen. It hurts just thinking about it.”

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD Saturday (Feb. 11), Lewis University men’s track and field finished the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College in fourth place.

The Flyers scored 65 points for the meet.

Notable performances came from a number of Lewis runners. In the 200 meter dash Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./

Fulton) placed third in 22.36.

Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) and John Partee (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) finished first and third respectively in the 800 meter run. Miranda finished in 1:54.54 and Partee finished in 1:55.44. Connor Ritzi (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) who ran the 1000 meter run in 2:30.12 finished in first. And in the 60 meter hurdles Shabari Bailey took first finishing in 8.33.

SWIMMING Saturday (Feb. 11) marked the end of the Great Lakes Valley Conference four day champion-

ship meet where Lewis University women’s swimming finished fifth.

The Flyers finished with a total score of 326 behind the champions, Drury University who finished with 894.

For Lewis the highlights of the final day came from Shannon Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York ) who finished the 100 yard freestyle in 51.80 which earned her a DIIB qualification. The other highlight of the day came from Sullivan, Kinsey Coble (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson), Brittany Kamper (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), and Courtney Duy (Buckeye, Ariz./Millennium) who swam the 400 yard free-

style relay in 3:28.74 also earning a DIIB mark.

• After a long four day Great Lakes Valley Conference meet Lewis University men’s swimming finished in fifth place earning a total of 353 points.

For the final day Adam Wise (Ocala, Fla./Forest) finished the 100 yard freestyle in 44.55 which earned him a DIIB qualification, his fourth DIIB of the meet.

Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/Svenborg Gymnasium) also earned a DIIB mark in the 200 yard backstroke finishing the race in 1:46.79, which was his fifth of the meet.

You obviously have to be really secure and confident in your ability to provide the service. Otherwise, you could end up in a really bad situation. Your equipment, staffing

and track record in the business will all come into play. But if all this is strong, and you’ve been in the business for a number of years and plan on staying in the business for years to come, then this is something I’d definitely do.

Why dental hygiene is essential disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor.

HEART DISEASE

Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health.

Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy.

FACIAL PAIN The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population.

Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain.

PANCREATIC CANCER In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men

with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Followup studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium — Porphyromonas gingivalis — was present in the Alzheimer’s brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease.
