Fire Academy lands starring role TV producer takes part in training On an overcast day in mid-October, you may have seen someone repelling down one of Romeoville’s water towers. That someone was television producer Dean Bushala, who was putting his Romeoville Fire Academy training to work.

Dean did the water tower decent four times that day, each one being caught on camera.

He’s making an independent documentary and the fire academy has played a big part in it.

Dean Bushala has been working in television for 20 years. The Chicago native was the director of photography on “Ice Road Truckers,” worked on “Deadliest Catch,” and has spent the last five or six years with National Geographic.

“In this project, I’m learning different skills,” he said. “I’m trying to get a better understanding of how firefighters do what they do. I was here in Romeoville for a week to do some work with the recruits and do some repelling on the training tower.”

Bushala was part of a project years ago with PBS and worked with the Downers Grove Fire Academy. He kept in touch with those firefighters, many of which are now instructors at the Romeoville Fire Academy. “Honestly, you’ll never find better people. The Romeoville

Fire Academy was the first place and the only place we wanted to go and we were lucky enough to get in.”

Even during the interview, Bushala was learning. In between questions, academy instructor Fabio Puccini was showing him how to tie a knot that is used to climb rope.

It wasn’t just a show for the camera either. In fact, the cameras were being broken down as this was happening. This was genuine interest.

Steve Carlsen, the academy instructor who was stationed at the top of the water tower, emerged from the tower base to start packing away the repelling gear. He stopped over for a few quick photos with Bushala and, if their interaction during the shoot was any indication, this project has been an enjoyable experience on both sides.

Fire Chief Kent Adams certainly likes what he has seen. “The project brings some notoriety to what we’re doing at the academy. We’re well known in the fire service for what we do, but this will give the department some recognition outside of the fire service too.”

Adams credits the quality of the academy with bringing this unique opportunity to Romeoville. “Having the academy has opened some doors that are traditionally not opened to smaller departments.”

“We’ll be back. We’re going to do more before we do the final act of the film,” reveals Dean. “That will probably be in March. It’s an ongoing piece.” The project is aiming for a late summer 2018 release.

Fountaindale Library board president named Illinois Library Association Luminary Margaret J. “Peggy” Danhof recently added another accomplishment to her long list of achievements when she was given the prestigious title of Illinois Library Association (ILA) Luminary. ILA Luminaries are those individuals who have made a significant contribution to Il-

linois libraries and whose supporters make a contribution of at least $2,000 to the Illinois Library Association Endowment on their behalf.

Danhof has served as a trustee and tireless advocate of Fountaindale Public Library District for 22 years, from 1984 to 1988 and from 1998 to present day. As president, she led the campaign to build the new building, which opened in 2011, with a successful referendum in February 2008 to meet the needs of the growing community. In addition to her work on the library board, Peggy gives generously of her time in service to the larger library community.

Group seeks to emphasize STEM in village STEM jobs are expected to grow at almost double rate of national average

As the push to bring science and engineering to the forefront on a national level increases, the Bolingbrook community is working to do its part in bringing additional STEM opportunities to the area.

Coding and designing video games, building robots and skyscrapers, getting kids excited about what science and technology really means is at the core of a new endeavor to build this skill set.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, commonly known as STEM, is becoming a priority as the realization that there are less students studying these pursuits, potentially leaving expertise in these career fields lacking.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, STEM jobs are expected to grow at almost double the rate of the national average in the near future, and currently there are not enough adults educated in STEM fields to fill current jobs.

Born of an idea to increase awareness and exposure of STEM, a group of individuals began the notion to create the Bolingbrook STEM Association (BSA), beginning the initiative in May 2017.

Now, fully established, the group is on its way to providing that handson experience.

“My 20-year career in the tech-

nology industry has provided me with an understanding of the constant evolution of technology, and the great need to ensure that our youth are prepared to fill the STEM related careers of the future,” said Sheldon Watts, director and founder of BSA. “This understanding sparked my desire to establish the Bolingbrook STEM Association. What makes our STEM program particularity unique is that it is truly a “community wide” initiative.”

Watts explains that he and a group of like-minded individuals, established the organization with the goal of fostering an increased awareness and exposure around STEM, hoping to begin more conversation, local programming and activities centered on the theme within the community.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to my fellow BSA board members who have been extremely dedicated to the mission of bringing fun and exciting STEM learning opportunities to the Bolingbrook area,” said Watts. “The board has been able to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time, and it’s due to the talents and expertise that each member brings to the organization.The team work exhibited has been phenomenal, and the focus is always on what’s best for the children and youth of our community.”

BSA is partnering and working closely with the Village of

Bolingbrook, the Valley View School District, the Fountaindale Public Library, the Bolingbrook Park District, local churches and businesses and hopes to bring in partnerships with universities and laboratories.

In addition, BSA is currently operating under the umbrella of the Community Service Council as a non-profit organization while it seeks its own non-profit status.

The Fountaindale Public Library District, in a proclamation, recently formalized the BSA and Fountaindale’s partnership to provide STEM education to Bolingbrook and declared its support for the BSA’s mission to provide fun and challenging experiences while utilizing hands

on technologically enhanced curriculum that inspires creative, analytical and critical thinking.

“We are extremely grateful for the continued support of Fountaindale Library District, who has been on board since the inception of BSA,” said Watts.“We look forward to continuing to work with our “state of the art” library to bring STEM to the community in a big way! Together, we’re confident that we can make a huge impact on the lives of our children and youth.”

Watts said the program has been very well received by the community, and that the positive feedback has been tremendous with its first major event, the Winter Break

STEM Camp, having 75 students participate in the fun.

Fountaindale further supported the BSA when the Friends of Fountaindale Library provided free scholarships to their Winter Break STEM Camps, which took place from January 2 through January 5.

The library held a free drawing for library cardholders to enter to win a scholarship. One scholarship was awarded to a child in each age group (ages 4-7, 8-11, 12-14 and 1518). The library received 117 entries in total.

“Our community is a thriving, diverse and family-friendly community that lives up to its motto, A Place to Grow!,” said Peggy J. Danhof, Fountaindale Public Library’s Board President. “It is important that our community’s children and teens have an opportunity to participate in STEM activities so that they can continue to grow in these important fields.”

Banking on the success of that winter camp, BSA is in the process of planning a spring break, and summer break STEM Camp.

In addition, BSA is always looking for volunteers for staffing events and to teach STEM related curriculum, and is seeking funding assistance for student sponsorships, laptop computers and robotic kits and other miscellaneous program expenses.

participated in this on-site, unannounced review that included inspection of all aspects of resident care, assessing facility compliance with numerous state and federal standards.

In addition to the IDPH rating, Senior Star was awarded a threeyear term of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF International) in 2017. The CARF accreditation represented the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and demonstrated Senior

Star’s substantial conformance to more than 1500 CARF standards for quality and pursuit of excellence.

The IDPH rating, along with the CARF accreditation, positions Senior Star among the best senior living providers in the industry, which is an important distinction when choosing a senior living community.

Newspapers remain strong voice for information, democracy

BY TARA MCCLELLAN MCANDREW FOR THE ILLINOIS PRESS ASSOCIATION Like so much in Illinois, the origins of its newspapers were tied to politics and patronage.

This land was a wild, largely unpopulated, western territory when its first newspaper sprang up - the single-sheet Illinois Herald, published in 1814 in Kaskaskia. Its proprietor landed the job of printing territorial and national business through his friend, the territorial governor, according to the July 1918 Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society.

Some early newspapers were created to support or oppose a political candidate or issue, like the anti-slavery Edwardsville Advocate. Illinois newspapers remained political for decades in the 1800s, according to the ISHS Journal.

Publications faced many challenges: bad transportation, unreliable mail delivery and a lack of subscribers.

As more settlers came to Illinois in the middle 1800s and transportation improved, newspapers fared better. The advent of railroads precipitated a newspaper boom.

Technological improvements such as the telegraph helped, too. So did wood-pulp, which made paper more economical. A lot of weeklies became dailies and foreign language newspapers arose for immigrant communities.

By the Civil War, Illinois had almost 300 newspapers, according to the Illinois Newspaper Project. While the war increased the desire for news, it brought censorship. Government restricted news sent by telegram and shut down newspapers for not supporting the war. This included the Chicago Times and the Jonesboro Gazette, according to the Abraham Lincoln Classroom online and the website of the Gazette’s successor, the Gazette-Democrat.

Chicago’s papers were decimated in 1871 by the city’s Great Fire. Within two days, all of the major dailies were in business again, according to the Illinois Newspapers Project. Others were gone forever.

Illinois’ newspapers were thriving and diversifying in 1880. The state had about 1,000 newspapers, with at least one in every county. Special interest papers were increasing. In 1899, Chicago was home to a newspaper for African-Americans, the Broad-Ax. More women, such as Myra Bradwell, were in the field. She had started the successful Chicago Legal News in 1868.

In 1902, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign began offering journalism classes, partly in response to a call for more professionalism in media. Twenty-five years later, it opened a journalism school.

Radio brought a new threat, so did the stock market crash of 1929 and the Depression. As World War II raged, newspapers cashed in old machines and other scrap metal for the war effort. Editors and publishers had to comply, once again, with military censorship, and a plea from the governor. According to the Illinois Press Association’s publication from February-March 1942, the governor asked Il-

linois newspapers to “impress the public … that this is a war to finish.”

After the war, the IPA fought for open government. It created a committee to investigate complaints of government inhibiting the media’s access to news. It’s an issue that remains today.

Newspapers have undergone drastic changes since the 1950s because of technology and competition. Insiders needlessly worried that the new invention called television would be papers’ death knell. But the Watergate investigation that brought down President Richard Nixon in the 1970s fueled a new generation of reporters and readers.

The end of the 1990s and the early 2000s brought the internet and cellphones, which claimed readers and advertising dollars. In response, chains bought many independent newspapers, then reduced staff and consolidated processes to decrease costs. Papers went online and charged for digital subscriptions.

Some say print newspapers are doomed; others say their readership is greater than ever because of the internet. What’s the future? No one knows, but so far the industry has survived every competitor that’s come along.

Paramedics recognized

by Edward Hospital Bolingbrook paramedics recognized Edward Hospital’s EMS (Emergency Medical Services) “Run of the Quarter” for July-September 2017 was recently awarded to the Bolingbrook Fire Department (BFD) for the care of a 52-year-old woman in cardiac arrest.

On July 10, BFD paramedics were called to the Edward-Elmhurst Health Bolingbrook Immediate Care, where the patient’s husband brought her because she was cool, clammy and feeling ill at work.

While in the waiting room, she went into cardiac arrest. EdwardElmhurst Immediate Care staff resuscitated the patient and she was moved into a treatment room.

Upon their arrival, paramedics did an assessment and performed tests that confirmed the woman was having a heart attack. She was taken to the Edward Hospital

Emergency Department and later treated in the Edward Hospital cardiac catheterization lab for a totally blocked coronary artery that required angioplasty and a stent to restore blood flow. The patient went home three days later.

Bolingbrook senior Alex Acosta placed second at the IHSA state boys bowling tournament

Two pins.

That was the difference between first and second place at the boys IHSA state bowling tournament.

Bolingbrook’s Alex Acosta rolled a two-day total of 2,713 pins and placed second in the state to Nick Sommer of Rockton Hononegah, who posted a total of 2,715. Lockport’s Alec Buchaas finished third with a 2,692.

“It was my first time coming in the top 10 and that was my goal coming into my last year,” Acosta said. “It was fun battling it out with Alec all day both days, but then Nick came in and had two good games and beat us both out.”

Acosta said despite being so close to a state championship, he was fine with his runner up finish.

“It wasn’t my fault, I really couldn’t worry about things in the past, I just worried about what was happening in the moment,” Acosta

said. “He finished with what he had to do and I finished the best I could and he just came out on top.

“In the morning on Friday, I just tried to do my best and I got out to a really big lead and then I just had to keep up with everyone else.

There was less pressure knowing I just had to beat someone behind me. I didn’t have to make up any pins.”

What Acosta did was leave his mark on a Bolingbrook program that hadn’t had a bowler finish higher than 23rd at the state tournament.

“I think I set the bar pretty high and I know someday there will be someone that is better than me, but for right now, I am happy how I represented our school,” Acosta said.

He knows that while he was the one earning the state medal, he could not have done it alone.

Downers Grove’s Granato looks to lead USA to gold

In July of last year, Downers Grove native Tony Granato got a call from Jim Johannson, a friend and USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations and general manager of the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, to tell him he was selected as the head coach of the team that will open play Feb. 14 against Slovenia in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The pair looked forward to challenging for a gold medal – together.

Unfortunately, Johannson died unexpectedly in his sleep on Jan. 21. He was 53.

“This obviously put a big black cloud over getting ready because this was Jimmy’s project, this was Jimmy’s team. This is something he built and not only was he our leader, but he is our friend that we wanted so much to share this experience with,” said Granato, who was a teammate of Johannson’s on the 1988 Olympic team. “I hate using let’s win one for someone else. We are so inspired for so many different reasons and he will be there

with us in spirit and thought and in every decision we make we will think of Jimmy and what he would do and how he would want us to do it. That itself is inspiring enough.

“It is our goal – and it always has been – to come home with gold medal. Does this make it easier or harder or different? I don’t know that. All I know is we will go there inspired to make Jimmy proud and be the best that we can be. He created this for us to win. He put us in a position with all the work he did to be ready for this and we have to focus on doing just that. I would love to represent him in a way he expected us to and make him proud.”

The team Johannson built and Granato will coach is the first team in 20 years that will not feature players currently in the National Hockey League.

“This is an opportunity for players, who are great players, to be on the Olympic stage that they didn’t think they would ever have. That opportunity is really exciting,” Granato said. “There is more pure Olympic feel for this. I am not at all criticizing the way it has been done the last five Olympics. There was nothing better

than to have Patrick Kane and Joe Pavelski and Jonathan Quick and Sidney Crosby playing with and against each other. That was center stage for our game and it showed our best athletes, but I also think there is a purity to the Olympics that when you get there, you are at the peak of your career. That is your first opportunity for a world stage and that is different. In 1980 and ’84 and ’88 and ’92 – all the players that played in that, no one knew and they were building to get that opportunity. This is somewhat that same feeling. As Jimmy said, there are 25 stories that are ready to be heard. When the stars go, it is a phenomenal event, but I think this has the potential to be more exciting. A lot of the uncertainties, a lot of unknowns and a lot of chances for athletes to take advantage of the Olympic moment and make a career of it.”

Granato made a career out of his Olympic opportunity, as he skated for three different teams over a 13-year NHL career.

He began his run with the New York Rangers (1988-90), then spent six years with the Los An-

Granato know the Olympics were a big part of his story as a player and he looks forward to the stories of this year’s team coming out.

“When I turn on the Olympics and I watch skiing or bobsled or gymnastics, I don’t know who they are until I watch them and then I watch the stories and then you get hooked on falling in love with a new hero. That is more of what the Olympic spirit was and maybe still was throughout the NHL days, but I think this is an exciting time for the fans, but also for the players and the participants. I really do think the fans will appreciate and enjoy it as much as they did with the NHL players.”

The purity of the Olympics was one of the things that made Granato set his sights on playing at the highest levels of the sport, in particular, the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ team.

But when the U.S. team won, half of the time we would be Mike Eruzione, Mark Johnson and Jim Craig and half the time we would be Stan and Bobby and Tony,” Granato said.

“There was all of a sudden a new group of heroes, new inspiring thing for a young hockey player to see. I was 15 when it happened. I didn’t know anything about the Olympics or even anything about college hockey and then I see 20 college kids wearing U.S.A. sweaters and that was a big moment for me as far as giving myself heroes and inspirational challenges to try and make it to the best level of hockey. Then I had a chance eight years later to be on an Olympic team. Those are the guys that set the tone for USA hockey. They jump-started the development, jump-started opportunities for Americans to be respected professionally and internationally.

Those guys were a great team to learn from for our team – I didn’t know Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig,

Neal Broten, Jack O’Callahan, but within two or three days after the start of the Olympics, I knew their name, their number, where they came from; I think that is how it was when I was a kid and how the Olympics were.”

After retiring as a player, Granato stayed around the NHL. He was an assistant coach and head coach for the Colorado Avalanche (2002-2009), Pittsburgh Penguins (2009-14) and Detroit Red Wings (2014-16).

With the Penguins, Granato helped lead the team to four consecutive playoff appearances from 2009-2014. Granato’s duties with the team included oversight of all forwards, a group he directed to an NHL-best 3.38 goal-pergame average during the 201213 season.

In 215 games as head coach of the Avalanche, Granato recorded 104 wins, two playoff appearances and a Northwest Division title (2002-03). He is now the current head coach the University of Wisconsin-Madison, of his alma mater.

He served as an assistant coach on the 2014 Olympic team, that fell to Finland in the bronze

medal game, before being chosen as the 2018 head coach “I know I can’t play anymore, so the next best thing is to coach.

Jimmy in the last month was able to call all 25 players, 23 of them on January 1, to tell them that they were part of the Olympic team and he said that was one of the greatest thing he ever did in his life was to tell kids, ‘Hey, you are on the Olympic team.’

The feeling he got and the emotions attached with that with the athletes hearing that are one of the best feelings ever on both ends of that call,” Granato said.

“Well, Jimmy made that call to me last. July telling I was selected to be the coach of the team and I felt the same way those athletes did. It is an honor. There is no greater feeling and sense of pride than to be able to represent your country and be part of an Olympic team, so it ranks up there with anything. I would love to say that I could still play, because nothing can replace playing in the Olympics, but to have the opportunity to go back and be part of another staff and be able to be part of the process of putting the team together to try

and do something special is as good as it gets.”

Granato is not the only member of the Team USA staff to have ties to the Chicagoland area.

One of his assistants, is fourtime Olympian and NHL Hallof-Famer Chris Chelios, who was grew up in Chicago and played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1990-99.

“He has turned a ton of his attention now to coaching and development and to have him on the staff makes it a heck of a lot more comfortable going into the Olympics. We have a great staff with Scott Young, who played in four Olympics and has worn the USA sweater for many years, Keith Allain, who has been part of a ton of American staffs to go along with Ron Rolston, so our staff has tons of experience internationally,” Granato said.

“Chris is as big of a competitor as anyone that ever wore a jersey. His experience team being a player on four Olympic teams and being a captain of all of them, he is USA Hockey. There is no better person to have on the bench next to you than Chris Chelios.”

ACOSTA FROM PAGE 7 me and all my friends were there to support me and help me through those two days,” he said. “The practice and dedication everyone had on the team and our coach really helped us out this year. Our team was a lot more mature this year and we got a lot better. We didn’t make it past regionals, but we were right there. Anyone can

do what I did if they put in as much hard work as I have.”

Bowling a sport in which hard work can produce results, no matter the size and strength if the competitor – something Bolingbrook coach Brian Wayne hopes will inspire other students coming through the school.

“At the state finals, you have all kinds of body types and they can all be successful. One of the bowl-

ers we bowled with was probably 6-foot-6, 6-7 and built like a football player and could really roll the ball hard and then Alex is 5-8, 5-9, maybe a 135 pounds soaking wet.

And if you put the work in, like a golfer or a pitcher in baseball, Alex has the ability to repeat the motion the same every single time and that only comes with work and repetition and practice,” Wayne said. “He has set a great example for kids that may not have been blessed with great physical strength.”

The work is what Wayne said separated Acosta from the pack at state.

“He was a dream for me as a coach all year. He was so consistent. He has worked so hard at this since sixth grade. He has bowled every day, he has put in hours and hours, he has traveled across the country to go to different tournaments. He has put in the work effort and I can’t say enough about him,” Wayne said. “He was awesome all weekend. He was never lower than third all 12 games. He was in third after game one and then bounced between first, second and third the rest of the way.

He was fantastic and I am really proud of him.”

In bowling, like in golf, the scores accumulate throughout all 12 games, so a competitor has to work on the win from the opening game.

“It is a grind. It is physically grinding because we start at 8 a.m. and we go until 4 p.m. and we do that both days. On Friday, you are just to qualify for the cut, but at the same time you are trying to win. If you have a bad start, you can find yourself behind. But, the thing about Alex is that he was so good the first three games,” Wayne said. “Emotions run high. Being on top of it mentally for eight hours. If you do have a bad frame, you can’t let that carry over because one bad frame can turn into three bad frames pretty quick. You can’t play defense in this sport. It is totally out of your power. You just have to do the best you can and you can’t stop anyone else from doing what they are doing.”

The best Acosta had set a new bar for the Bolingbrook program.

“It was unchartered territory for us as a program. We have a couple teams go down there and some individuals the last four or five years, but we have never been in a position where we had a chance to medal. He came in second place out of all those bowlers and that is something to be extremely proud of. It is something he can cherish for the rest of his life.”

Renting to family? Be sure to keep it business DEAR DAVE, I have cousins who are thinking about moving back to Connecticut from Virginia. They’ll be renting for a while, and I have an unoccupied rental house. Do you think renting to family is a bad idea?

KATHERINE DEAR KATHERINE, Renting to family can work out just fine, as long as there are clearly understood rules and boundaries in place ahead of time. Both parties should understand there must be a landlord and tenant relationship with regards to all aspects of

the rental agreement.

Tenants have the right to expect a landlord to make needed repairs promptly, pay the taxes and insurance on a property on time, and do all the other things a landlord should do as outlined in the rental agreement. As a landlord, you have the right to expect the rent to be paid early or on time, and for the tenant to respect the property and guidelines in the rental agreement. A landlord also has the right to evict a tenant through fair, legal process if they violate the terms of the agreement.

When it comes to these business dealings, you’re wearing the landlord cap, and they’re wearing the renter’s cap. At Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other family events, the caps come off and you’re family. But you don’t get to

play the cousin card as a way to keep from paying rent, and you don’t get to play that game to avoid your duties as a landlord.

Phrases like, “Well, I just thought because you’re my cousin” have no place in these situations. Make plans to have a full-blown, indepth conversation about every aspect of the rental agreement and relationship before anything is signed. If you don’t, there’s a possibility someone will develop a sense of entitlement about something.

And that’s no good in any type of relationship!
