Study shows Dist. 365u math teachers excel

Initial study results show Valley View School District math teachers are excelling in robust math skills compared to their counterparts across several states.

According to Valley View, in 2014 it partnered with Michigan State University and the University of Virginia in a research study of new teachers, taking a look at their classroom instruction, analyzing instruction based on the Teaching in Robust Understanding (TRU) mathematics rubric.

This rubric, designed by math experts, is meant to measure instructional practices that directly relate to improved math skills for students.

An information report from the district shows that in all four areas measured on the TRU rubric, the average score of Valley View teachers increased significantly from the fall of 2015 to the spring of 2016, the only district to do so.

A total 8 school districts with 82 teachers from MIchigan, Indiana and Ohio were involved in the study with 14 teachers from Valley View participating.

In comparison, the report states that the other 82 teachers either scored the same or results were lower over the same time period.

The research study authors anticipate further conclusions based on the study in 2018 which will help Valley View connect the success to its curriculum. Valley View said it will continue to use the TRU rubric as a tool to professionally develop its educators and is currently working with the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) on complex math instruction in fourth grade classrooms.

Tax program to benefit Catholic schools New state tax credit scholarship program to benefit Catholic schools

As the basis for school funding was intensely debated this summer in the legislature, the fruits of its labor are beginning to show in favor for private schools.

In August, the Illinois House and Senate passed a comprehensive education funding bill which was signed into law by the Governor.

According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet, additional details now are beginning to unfold, including a new five-year program for Tax Credit Scholarships (TCS) for students in private schools.

Scholarships can be awarded based on a family’s income level

in relation to the federal poverty level.

For example, according to the Illinois Policy Institute, scholarships may be awarded to families whose income does not exceed 300 percent of the federal poverty level.

For example, a family of four earning $73,800 or less would qualify.

In Romeoville, St. Andrew the Apostle released information regarding the tax credit scholarship, encouraging students to check for eligibility.

For students whose household income is less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, the scholarship will be 100 percent of tuition and necessary fees; for students whose household income is between 185 percent and 250

percent, scholarships will average 75 percent of tuition and necessary fees; and for students whose household income is above 250 percent, scholarships will average 50 percent of tuition and necessary fees.

According to the Diocese, the new scholarship program is funded by individual and corporate donors who will receive a tax break (75 percent of their donation) for their contribution to a scholarship granting organizations (SGO) such as the Diocese.

These organizations will then use this money to grant scholarships to qualifying students. Individual donors can direct their donations to the school or subset of schools of their choice.

Corporate donors cannot designate. The credit is non-refundable, but it can be carried forward for

five years.

The State of Illinois has created a new way to fund scholarships for children who choose to attend Catholic schools through the “Invest in Kids Act.” The Empower Illinois Scholarship Granting Organization will be operational and is expected to have application information ready Dec. 15 and anticipates accepting applications Jan. 2, 2018.

The Diocese reports that to qualify for a scholarship, a student’s family will have to give official documentation to the SGO of their ability to pay. Initially, students whose families earn 300 percent of the federal poverty level or less ($73,800 for a family of four) will qualify.

Once a student receives a scholarship, his or her family can earn up to 400 percent of the federal

poverty level ($98,400 for a family of four).

From January 1 to April 1, priority will be given to students from each of the following categories: Students who received a scholarship from an SGO during the previous school year; Students who are members of a household whose previous year’s total annual income does not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty level ($45,510 for a family of four}; Students who reside within a focus district; and students who are siblings of students currently receiving a scholarship.

After April 1, all other qualifying students will be able to receive scholarships.

Former trustees appointed to village board Sheldon Watts to finish Leroy Brown’s term

An active community member, Sheldon Watts, took a seat on the Bolingbrook Village Board, filling the unexpired term of Leroy Brown, who recently passed away.

Mayor Roger Claar appointed Watts to the office of Village Trust-

ee at the Nov. 28 village board meeting.

In a release from the village, Watts said, “The legacy and positive impact that Leroy Brown had on this community will last for generations to come. We will hold all the great memories very close to our hearts.

It is an honor, and truly humbling to be asked to complete his remaining unexpired term. I look forward to working hard every day on behalf of the residents of Bolingbrook.”

HEAVY Raiders open the season with one of the best group of guards in the state of Illinois

Last season, Bolingbrook made its second trip to the IHSA state finals, placing third for the second time in four years.

Gone from last year’s team are Malik Binns and Voyager Media Player of the Nana Akenten, however, the cupboard is not empty for Rob Brost’s Raiders.

Bolingbrook brings back a plethora of guards, led by senior Kaleb Thornton and juniors Tyler Cochran and Joseph Yesufu.

The trio accounted for 43.5 percent of the Raiders’ scoring last season.

“Everyone talks about those three, but you have to throw Demari Grant, Isaiah Clemons and Jordan Myrick as well,” Brost said. “Obviously Joseph, Tyler and Kaleb get all the publicity – and rightfully so – but the combination of all six of them

is really hard to deal with over a 32-minute time span.

“It is a luxury that few coaches have and we are fortunate to have developed these guys. They are one of the top groups in the state and they have worked hard individually to get better.”

With Akenten and Binns gone, Brost said the conversation of who will take over that scoring void.

“Every team is different and I think it is more of a leadership thing rather than it is who is going to score the points,” Brost said. “We just talk about sharing the ball and playing the right way.

We never talk about who is going to score what and who is going to do what on what night. We are 4-0 and have had four different leading scorers. Against Andrew, Kaleb led us with 20 points, but in the game before that he had single digits, but nine assists. We just take what the game gives us FILE PHOTO

Flyer women win behind 30 from Kelliher The Lewis University women’s basketball team jumped out to a 29-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, topping Bellarmine 81-55 Saturday (Dec. 2) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Knights Hall.

Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led the Flyers (5-3, 1-1 GLVC) with 30 points on 15-of-20 (75%) shooting to go along with five assists.

Rachel Hinders ( Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 16 points on 7-of-9 (78%) shooting. Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./ Brownsburg) added nine points and Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) tallied eight points and three steals.

Lewis shot 58.6 percent (34for-58) from the floor, while limiting Bellarmine (3-3, 0-1) to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting.

The Flyers had 10 steals and had a 35-33 rebounding edge.

MEN’S BASKETBALL The Lewis University men’s basketball team fell to No. 3 Bellarmine 78-59 Saturday (Dec. 2) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Knights Hall.

The Flyers trailed 19-13 with 10:57 left in the first half when the Knights went on a 16-2 run to open up the game. The hosts led 39-24 at the half.

Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)

scored 14 points on 6-of-8 (75%) shooting to lead Lewis.

Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting (83%) and Anthony D’Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) scored nine points on 4-of-5 (80%) shooting.

For the game the Flyers shot 22-of-48 (45.8%) from the floor, while Bellarmine shot at a 52.8 percent (28-for-53) clip.

The Flyers were outrebounded 32-23 for the contest.

Lewis moves to 2-6, 0-2 in the GLVC on the season, while Bellarmine is now 7-0, 1-0 in the GLVC.

SWIMMING Saturday (Dec. 2), Lewis University faced William Jewell in a head to head at home losing to the Cardinals 141-121.

Gabby Jeffers (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) had a solid performance placing first in two events, one being the 50 yard freestyle with 25.43 while the other being the 100 yard backstroke with 59.91.

Caitlin Krull (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg) finished first in the 500 yard freestyle with 5:09.92.

She also finished first in the 200 yard freestyle with 1:59.43.

In the 200 yard butterfly Shelby Gertson (Phoenix, AZ/Seton Catholic Preparatory) came in first with 2:15.49.

Finishing first in the 200 yard backstroke was Stephanie Palczynski (Warrenville, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South High School) who finished the race in 2:09.90.

• Lewis University men’s swimming hosted William Jewell on Saturday (Dec. 2), lossing 148-114.

The top performances for the Flyers came from Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/ Svenborg Gymnasium) who placed first in both the 100 yard backstroke with 51.30 and the 200 yard backstroke with 1:50.67.

Bryce Brouillette (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) also came in first after recording a time of 10:13.16 in the 1000 yard freestyle.

Jesse Drake (Goshen, Ind./ Northridge) placed first in the 200 breaststroke with 2:11.30.

In the 100 yard butterfly Colin Williams (Elk Grove, Ill./ Elk Grove) took first recording 51.02.

TRACK AND FIELD Friday (Dec. 1), Lewis University men’s track and field completed its first meet of the season at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open.

Shabari Bailey placed third in the 60 meter hurdles with 8.33.

Finishing third in the pole vault was Richie Castro (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) with 4.45 me-

ters.

MEN’S SOCCER The United Soccer Coaches announced Wednesday (Nov. 29) that four Lewis University men’s soccer players were selected to the United Soccer Coaches Division II All-Midwest Region Teams.

Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) and Devon Amoo-Mensah (Naperville, Ill./ Naperville Central) were First Team All-Midwest Region selections, while Timm Adler (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) and Claude Kameni (Berlin, Germany/OSZ Gesundheit) were Third Team picks.

All four were also All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selections.

Mueller finished the year with 13 goals scored, six of which were game-winners. He recorded a hat trick in the Flyers’ 3-2 win over Quincy (Oct. 20) and was twice named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, for weeks ending Oct. 8 and Oct. 22.

He was tabbed the United Soccer Coaches Division II Player of the Week on Oct. 24.

He also was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team

and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association AllMidwest Region Second Team.

Amoo-Mensah and Kameni anchored the back row for the Flyers, where they helped the defense record five shutouts and a 0.99 goals against average.

Amoo-Mensah scored two goals and added two assists, while Kameni postred a goal and three assists on the season.

Adler picked up three goals and two assists on the year, adding game-winners against Southern Indiana (Sept. 29) and Bellarmine (Oct. 1).

“Congratulations to all four,” Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. “Each of them has had an integral part in our success this fall.”

Lewis finished the season 124-2 and advanced to the GLVC semifinals.

MEN’S GOLF Lewis University head men’s golf coach Skip Steffey announced on Wednesday (Nov. 29) that Colton Elmore, Paul Negri, Jake Pluth and Jacob Steinert will join the Flyers for the 2018-19 season.

Lewis falls in NCAA DII regional finals The No. 4 Lewis University women’s volleyball team ended its season Saturday (Dec. 2) with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 29-27) loss to Rockhurst in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship game at Neil Carey Arena.

After winning the first set, the Flyers dropped the next two.

However, they appeared to battle back in the fourth set, taking a 19-12, which led to a Rockhurst timeout.

The Hawks (31-7) went on a 12-3 run from there to take a 2422 lead. Lewis fought off five set points for Rockhurst until a kill ended the match.

Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./ Penn) tallied 14 kills and four block assists for the Flyers. Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield Central) added 12 kills, 17 digs and three block assists, while Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) had nine kills and 11 digs.

Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) totaled 45 assists and 16 digs, while Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./ West Chicago) dug 26 balls.

Rockhurst hit .134 (58-of-187) to .112 from Lewis (53-of-188).

Schneider and Seliga were Midwest Region All-Tournament selections.

The Flyers’ season ends with a 33-3 record, a program-record .917 winning percentage and the first ever American Volleyball Coaches Association No. 1 national ranking earlier in the year.

A game earlier, Lewis beat Ferris State 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 2225, 25-10, 15-10) Friday (Dec. 1) in a Midwest Regional semifinal match at Neil Carey Arena.

It is the second straight year the Flyers (33-2) knocked Ferris State (24-8) out of the NCAA Tournament.

The 33 wins are the most for the program since it went 51-11-2 in 1981.

Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./ Nerinx Hall) came up big for Lewis down the stretch, scoring the final four points of the match after the Bulldogs tied the game at 11-11.

“I don’t know if I can even remember that,” Seliga said of the final four kills. “I think (setter Abby) Becker was making good decisions. She did a really good

job of executing.”

Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./ Penn) paced the Flyers with 19 kills, two solo blocks and six block assists, while Seliga added 16 kills, 15 digs and six block assists.

“It feels great,” Schneider said.

“Our serve receive kind of broke down there but then we were able to pick it back up and the hitters were able to get kills.”

Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had 46 assists, Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) tallied 21 digs and Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had 18 digs. Seliga and Katarzynski had three aces each.

Lewis hit .238 for the match (57-of-172), while Ferris State had a .157 (55-of-185) hitting percentage. In the fourth set Lewis hit .355 (11-for-31), while the Bulldogs hit .000 (8-of-36).

For the third straight year the Lewis won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Michigan Tech 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20) Thursday (Nov. 30) in a Midwest Regional quarterfinal match at Neil Carey Arena.

The win moves Lewis to 32-2 on the year, while Michigan Tech ends its season 20-11. The 32 wins are the most for Lewis since the 2009 season when it won 32 games.

Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) helped four Flyers get double figures in kills as she dished out 43 assists. Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) led the way with 15 kills, while Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and Bailey Sparkman (St. Charles, Mo./ Francis Howell) each had 13 kills and Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) added 11 kills.

Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had six block assists, while Sparkman added four block assists. Seliga tallied 11 digs and four aces, Ronni Katarzynski had 20 digs and Hyland contributed 11 digs.

The Flyers totaled 11 blocks and eight aces for the match.

They hit .266 (58-of-158) from the floor behind a .444 percentage (13-for-27) from Sparkman and limited Michigan tech to a .159 (45-of-151) hitting percentage.

Elmore, an Unmanned Aircraft Systems major, is a fouryear varsity golfer at Sacred Heart High School in Salina, Kansas, where he also plays quarterback for the football team and basketball.

He has helped the golf team win three straight state championships and also was a member of the state champion basketball team last year.

As a junior he had an average score of 73.8 per round with a low round of 67.

“Cole is an excellent player from a strong high school program in Kansas and has competed on the national level for the past couple of years,” Steffey said. “I believe Cole will have an impact for us during his freshman year and has potential to be a top player in the conference.”

Pluth, a Business/Accounting major, is a four-year varsity golfer at Joliet Catholic Academy.

He is a three-time All-Conference member and earned three regional medals.

He finished in eighth place in state as a junior and 12th place as a senior in Class 2A. He was the Illinois Junior Golfers Association Player of the Year in 2017 and helped JCA finish 11th in the state in 2017.

“Jake has been an outstanding area player for the past several years, including two strong finishes in the state 2A tournament, as well as a strong resume from play in the MAJGT tourna-

ments,” Steffey said. “I look for Jake to help us for the next four years.”

Steinert, an Aviation Flight Management major, has competed on the varsity golf team his first three years of high school at Carrboro High School in North Carolina.

He is a three-time All-Conference member and earned the team sportsmanship award twice.

As a junior he was a team captain, was the conference MVP, won the individual conference title, earned the 2017 2A Central District Player of the Year award, finished in third place at regionals and advanced to the state meet.

“Jacob has the potential to be an outstanding player with his tremendous length,” Steffey said. “Once he has shown the skill to manage that length around the course, he is capable of shooting really low numbers.”

The Flyers will return to action March 11 at the Embry-Riddle Spring Invite in Prescott, Arizona.

“Having Joey helps us on the glass and he plays so hard,” Brost said. “The speed is a little bit of an adjustment from where he came from. He is a great kid and has really helped us out. This year’s team is coming together as we go here.”

Like they did last season, the Raiders are concerned about the win and not about the stats, which a way that will lead to victories.

“We are sharing the ball and doing things collectively that makes it hard if you are an oppo-

nent,” Brost said.

The Raiders aren’t the only Valley View School District team to have a hot start, as Romeoville won the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic.

The two Valley View teams meet up Dec. 13 in Romeoville.

“They have a ton of talent and whenever you have a ton of talent, you have a chance to win a lot of games,” Brost said of the Spartans. “They are going to pose a challenge to us that we haven’t seen yet at this point in the season.”

Newspapers to commemorate Illinois’ bicentennial

BY DENNIS ANDERSON Illinois turned 200 on Dec. 3, 2018, and over the course of the next year Bugle/Enterprise Newspapers is helping to commemorate the event.

The Bugle/Enterprise Newspapers and dozens of publications throughout Illinois will print a weekly series of articles featuring key moments, figures, industries and events that help to make Illinois unique. Some of the first articles include the Underground Railroad, coal mining, the dueling Peoria territory and top Illinois athletes through the years.

Other topics include Illinois’ role in the Civil War, World War I and World War II; transportation, from the railroads to the interstates to aerospace; and the arts, including jazz and the blues.

BY TRAVIS LOTT of the County Journal No exploration of the 200 years of Illinois history would be complete without a look at what preceded those two centuries.

While Illinois became a state in 1818, its story began nearly 150 years before that, in 1673, when Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette explored the Mississippi River in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean.

When the two explorers’ travels led them near hostile Spanish territories, they turned back and traveled along the Illinois River, finding safety among the Kaskaskia Indian tribe. Marquette founded the Mission of the Immaculate Conception, but left the mission in the

The mission had to be moved several times due to conflicts between the Kaskaskia, Illini Confederation and the Iroquois.

Eventually, the mission planted roots at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Michigamea River, which is now known as the Kaskaskia River.

The village of Kaskaskia was established in 1703, and was mainly inhabited by French traders and their wives.

The village’s fertile ground in the American Bottoms, along with its positioning at the confluence of two rivers, led it to be a hub of agriculture and trading. It also became a focal point for warring British and French during the French and Indian War. In 1756, fearing attack, the townspeople built Fort Kaskaskia on a hill overlooking the town. The fort was then destroyed by the townspeople who feared it would fall into British control after the French lost the war.

Those who did not want to live under the impending British rule moved to St. Louis or Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

The town fell to the British and was kept under control of the crown until July 4, 1778, when George Rogers Clark led an expedition of American troops into the village to liberate it. After a two-month

journey over 1,000 miles, Clark and his 175 men arrived in Kaskaskia to take the area. Many of the British had been withdrawn from the area, and Clark captured the settlement without a shot being fired.

With Clark in town, residents rang the Liberty Bell of the West, which got its name that day. The bell was originally given to the Catholic Church of the Illinois Country by King Louis XV of France. The bell was cast in France in 1741, making it 11 years older than the Liberty Bell that sits in Philadelphia.

An inscription on the side of the bell reads “Pour Leglise des Illinois par les Soins du Roi D’outre,” which translates to “for the Church of the Illinois, by gift of the King across the water.”

One side of the bell is ornamented with the royal lilies of France. The other side bears a cross and pedestal, with the top and arms of the cross terminating in grouped fleur de lis.

Taking Kaskaskia was the first step in Clark’s plan to capture the western headquarters of the British at Detroit.

The bell is now a tourist attraction, much like the Immaculate Conception Church that sits next door.

We’re in the middle of Baby Step 2, so we’re working to pay off everything but our house using the debt snowball. We only bring home about $40,000 a year combined right now, so how should we handle Christmas budgeting in the middle of working our debt snowball?

SCOT DEAR SCOT, Working to get out of debt can cause stress within a relationship.

That stress is sometimes magnified if you’re serious about getting out of debt during the holidays.

I’m glad you two are on the same page where your finances are concerned. The fact that you’re committed to becoming debt-free as a couple will go a long way toward ensuring a merrier Christmas.

Just sit down together, have a look at your budget, and ask what she thinks is a reasonable amount to spend on gifts and things while you’re trying to get out of debt.

If you think her suggestion is a manageable figure, just give her a hug, tell her you agree, and move on. If you’ve been trying to get out of debt for a while, you might even propose using last year’s Christmas budget.

The important thing is to make sure you listen to each other, and approach this together. On the off chance one of you wants to spend what the other considers to be too much, talk about how and why you arrived at that figure. Then, using your budget as a guide, gently and lovingly talk things out.

Honestly, I don’t think you’re going have problems if you’ve already been working together to get your finances in order. And remember, you don’t have to spend
