2018 in Will County saw many changes and improvements, such as a new Metra station opening, local businesses receiving regional acclaim, community officials honored for serving, as well as groundbreaking for the new Courthouse. Here is a breakdown of some of the events shaped our community this past year.

County begins work on new courthouse

Will County officials gathered recently to break ground on the county’s new modern courthouse. The state-of-the-art courthouse will be filled with the latest technology and will accommodate the county’s predicted growth. The new courthouse will be 10-stories and will contain 38 courtrooms. There will also be a four story administrative building directly in front of the tower, which will house the circuit clerk and sheriff offices. Non-court functions will be handled in the administrative building. Demolition work has already begun on the site of the former First Midwest Bank building. The estimated construction completion date is fall of 2020 with the new Will County Courthouse becoming one of the tallest buildings in downtown Joliet.

New Romeoville Metra station to open February 5

Years in the works, it took cooperation on every level from local, state, and federal agencies and two international companies to make the new station, near the intersection of 135th and New Avenue, to happen.

According to Metra, it will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicago area Metra line since 2011. The project is estimated at $4.9 million dollars with more than $3.9 million of the funding through CMAP’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Grant. The Village of Romeoville was also fortunate to receive a supplemental grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) for pedestrian access from 135th St to the Station.

Plainfield water bills rise in 2018

Residents of Plainfield paid a little more for their water and sewer services. The village board approved a proposal to increase rates on average by about $4 per month for average users, with that extra cash earmarked for necessary future expenses.

The board reviewed three water/sewer rate surveys, current and projected revenues and expenses, and a worksheet of proposed rate adjustments.

Per the staff report, rate increases are needed on water rates to cover future operational and capital costs within the water and sewer department.

Those expenses include a projected increase in the wholesale cost of water from Lake Michigan, where the village gets its water. Another major future expense is included in the village’s capital improvement plan, which will provide maintenance and improvements within the water and sewer system over the next five years, estimated at $10 million.

Compared to neighboring communities, Plainfield’s average monthly water and sewer bill is about $11.64 lower, per the staff report. Staff also noted that compared to likesized communities that utilize Lake Michigan water, Plainfield residents pay on average $20.07 less in their monthly water bills. The proposal means the minimum bill users will see their bills go up about $12 per year, while average users will see an annual increase of $48. The capital charge on those bills will be reduced by 50 cents per month.

Local pizza tabbed among ‘Chicago’s Best’

A 30-year staple in Romeoville, Ats-a-Nice Pizza, is not only one of Romeoville’s best, but now claims the title as one of Chicago’s Best. It is only fitting that a TV news show created out of the basis of customer approval, chose Ats-a-Nice Pizza to be featured on WGN’s “Chicago Best,” where community has kept the business thriving since its opening in 1988.

Community went bald for kids cause

The World Health Organization reports that a child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes.

In one of Bolingbrook’s most celebrated fundraising events, recognized nationally as one of the largest, community members came together, going bald for a cure, at the annual Bolingbrook 4 Kids St. Baldrick’s event. More than 200 individuals came out to shave their head in support of research for childhood cancer Sunday March 11 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 20001 Rodeo Drive. The event honors kids, who have or have had cancer, and their families, who are from Bolingbrook and nearby towns.

Plainfield approves local gas tax increase

On March 5, village trustees split on a vote to increase the village’s local motor fuel tax from 4 cents per gallon up to 6 cents per gallon, with Mayor Mike Collins casting a tiebreaking vote to send the increase through.

In order to maintain roads, village staff asked the board to consider the increase, which is expected to generate an estimated $500,000 per year for the village. Those funds will be applied to the village’s proposed $4 million budget for road resurfacing and maintenance, part of the fiscal year 2019 budget set to be approved this spring. Wojowski is referring to an increase in the village’s water bills, passed in January.

At that time, the board approved a $4 per month hike in water bills for most homes. The trustee said he was uncomfortable putting additional increases on residents.

When it came to the vote, the trustees split, with Wojowski, Edward O’Rourke, and Margie Bonuchi voting against the increase, while Larson, Bill Lamb, and Larry Newton cast yes votes. In casting the final yay vote, Mayor Mike Collins said the State of Illinois has not been giving out much money to municipalities to supplement their roadwork needs.

The increase goes into effect on May 1.

Village limiting tobacco sales to 21-and-older

In what is becoming a nationwide movement, Bolingbrook raised the age from 18 to 21 to buy smoking materials April 1. Evidence indicates that the move will make a significant impact in lowering the number of people who go on to become lifelong smokers.

Bolingbrook joins the likes of Chicago and Naperville who have passed similar resolutions as well as nearly 300 municipalities and a total of five states, (California, New Jersey, Oregon, Hawaii and Maine), who have raised the minimum sale age for tobacco products to 21.

More than 500 take polar plunge in Joliet

Cold waters did not deter more than 500 participants from freezin’ for a reason. Mostly sunny skies and 40-degree temperatures set the scene for people taking a dip into Leisure Lake Saturday, March 10 during Illinois Special Olympics’ seventh annual Joliet Polar Plunge. The event, by design, aimed to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois programming, and the board decides how the funding is used.

Fast action prevented further tragedy at Izzy’s Bar

The shooting early Friday morning at Izzy’s Bar that left one person dead and another seriously injured could have been a lot worse if not for the fast reaction of two patrons.

Mike Cullick and Artis Henderson III, stopped at the Joliet bar after a pool league because Henderson wanted popcorn and ended up potentially saving multiple lives after Patrick K. Gleason of Crest Hill came into the bar armed. Gleason shot and killed 52-year-old bartender Danny Rios, but the two friends made sure there were no more casualties. Gleason was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries sustained when Henderson and Cullick disarmed him. He is in Will County jail facing five charges of first-degree murder, three charges of attempted murder, one charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery.

While the shooter was heading toward Henderson, Cullick went to protect his friend.

Police Dept. honors officer, civilian of the year

Officer Russell Pruchnicki is the recipient of the Plainfield Police Department’s 2017 Officer of the Year. This award recognizes officers whose service to both the Department and the Village is exceptional and professional. The men and women of the Police Department nominate officers they consider worthy of the highest degree of recognition.

Plainfield Police Department’s “2017 Civilian of the Year” award. This award recognizes a civilian employee whose service to both the Village and the Department is exceptional.

K9 Memorial unveiled at riverfront

The four-legged members that serve with law enforcement now have their own memorial in Plainfield’s Riverfront Park.

On June 6, the village, the police department, and the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation unveiled the new K9 Memorial at the riverside park. The memorial recognizes K9s of the past, present and future. Getting the site ready was a three-year effort of fundraising and public awareness.

The riverfront park was utilized as a K9 training field in the 1970s and 1980s, and was used by several departments in the area. Three of the village’s late K9s were buried at the Riverfront Park. The village’s current K9 is Kody, a German Shepherd who has served the Plainfield Police Department with officer Tracy Caliendo since 2013. Three years ago, Caliendo began the effort with the Riverfront Foundation to create a memorial at the site.

Amazon delivers $10K for Joliet food bank center

The newest distribution center for the Northern Illinois Food Bank has some additional cash to help its mission of feeding the hungry. On June 12, volunteers from Amazon’s Joliet fulfillment center visited the new South Suburban Center in Joliet, organizing product and offering up a $10,000 donation to help feed the area hungry.

The donation was part of what Amazon refers to as a Community Kaizen – a Japanese term for “change for the better.” Amazon representatives took a tour with food bank workers of the new 18,000 square-foot facility, offering up information on how to better streamline activity inside the warehouse. For every dollar the Northern Illinois Food Bank receives, it can distribute $8 worth of groceries. That means that Amazon’s donation represents $80,000 worth of food provided by the food bank.

To help address the negative impacts of the opioid crisis, drug-related crime, and rising rates of overdose deaths, Sheriff Mike Kelley has begun implementing a new ‘out-of-the-box’ approach to address the opioid epidemic. Sheriff Kelley has partnered up with Family Guidance Centers to help with the implementation of this program.

Family Guidance Centers, Inc. is a not-for-profit behavioral health care organization based in Illinois that has a mission to treat and prevent substance use disorders as well as an array of other related problems including mental health.

Many proactive police departments in Illinois, including the Will County Sheriff’s Office are implementing an arrest-diversion program. These programs are sometimes referred to as “Safe Passage” programs. This program is the final piece, in a three part approach, of combating the heroin epidemic through drug enforcement, prevention thru education, and now treatment.

To help jumpstart this program, the

Will County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the Community Law Enforcement Partnership (CLEP) Grant for deflection for substance use disorder treatment through the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA).

This grant will provide the Will County Sheriff’s Office critical funding to facilitate referrals for substance use treatment.

Under the leadership of Sheriff Mike Kelley, the Will County Sheriff’s Office has done a great job addressing the opioid epidemic by targeting the drug dealers and getting drugs off the streets thru various enforcement means. The Sheriff’s Office has educated the public with the “Hidden In Plain Sight” trailer and by establishing the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. Sheriff Kelley’s next step is to help those in need to obtain the treatment they most desperately need to rid themselves of addiction by partnering up with Family Guidance Centers in the Will County Sheriff’s Office Safe Passage Program.

If you, or anyone you know, are in need of drug use addiction treatment,

the Will County Sheriff’s Office is here to assist you in getting the treatment that is needed. The Safe Passage Program is a citizen self-referral system.

Drug-involved individuals are encouraged to initiate contact and engage with members of the Will County Sheriff’s Office without fear of prosecution, and an immediate treatment referral is made with the assistance of behavioral health experts, trained officers and volunteers. Individuals who are indigent and have no health insurance may be provided financial assistance for treatment or other services when available.

Any resident of Will County who enters the Will County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex and requests help with their addiction to opioids, alcohol, or other substances, will be screened for eligibility and, if eligible, registered for participation in the Safe Passage Program.

If the individual requesting help with addiction is in possession of drugs or drug equipment (e.g., needles), the individual will turn these items over to the Sheriff’s Office and not be criminally charged.

The partnership that the Will County Sheriff’s Office and Family Guidance Centers will be providing to the citizens of Will County is just another example of how proactive and serious the Sheriff’s Office is in helping to combat this opioid epidemic.

BACK The top stories in Sports for the first six months of 2018

FIRST SECOND Bolingbrook’s Alex Acosta rolled a two-day total of 2,713 pins and placed second in the state to Nick Sommer of Rockton Hononegah, who posted a total of 2,715. Lockport’s Alec Buchaas finished third with a 2,692.

Acosta said despite being so close to a state championship, he was fine with his runner up finish.

Acosta left his mark on a Bolingbrook program that hadn’t had a bowler finish higher than 23rd at the state tournament.

COACHING FOR COUNTRY In July of last 2017, Downers Grove native Tony Granato got a call from Jim Johannson, a friend and USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations and general manager of the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, to tell him he was selected as the head coach of the team that competed in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The pair looked forward to challenging for a gold medal – together.

Unfortunately, Johannson died unexpectedly in his sleep on Jan. 21, 2018. He was 53.

The team Johannson built and Granato coached is the first team in 20 years that did not feature players currently in the National Hockey League.

Granato made a career out of his Olympic opportunity, as he skated for three different teams over a 13-

year NHL career.

He began his run with the New York Rangers (1988-90), then spent six years with the Los Angeles Kings (1990-96) before finishing his career with the San Jose Sharks (1996-01) where he was an All-Star during the 1996-97 season.

After retiring as a player, Granato stayed around the NHL. He was an assistant coach and head coach for the Colorado Avalanche (2002-2009), Pittsburgh Penguins (2009-14) and Detroit Red Wings (2014-16).

With the Penguins, Granato helped lead the team to four consecutive playoff appearances from 2009-2014. Granato’s duties with the team included oversight of all forwards, a group he directed to an NHL-best 3.38 goal-per-game average during the 2012-13 season.

In 215 games as head coach of the Avalanche, Granato recorded 104 wins, two playoff appearances and a Northwest Division title (2002-03). He is now the current head coach the University of Wisconsin-Madison, of his alma mater.

MEDAL MANIA Joliet Catholic freshman DJ Hamiti was thoroughly dominant in his run to the 106-pound Class 2A state championship at State Farm Center in Champaign.

Hamiti (42-4) had two pins and two technical falls to win the title.

“It means a lot,” Hamiti said. “I came in to tell everybody that I was going to win my weight class, and I think I showed that.”

Hamiti’s title is the first for the Hilltoppers since 1967.

Lockport junior Anthony Molton (46-7) had one of the toughest roads to get to the Class 3A 120-pound finals, and one of the wildest state title wins of the weekend.

Molton posted an 11-2 major decision over two-time defending state champion Joey Melendez of Montini in the semifinals.

Awaiting him there was 2016 state champ Travis Ford-Melton of Marian Catholic.

Molton had to come back from an early deficit to force overtime.

In the second overtime, FordMelton conceded an escape point to start the period neutral.

The tactic backfired, however, as Molton took him down with 0:15 left to post a 7-4 win and the IHSA state title.

Matt Ramos (113) placed third for the Porters, while Zach Reese (152) took fourth.

Joliet West senior Jonathan Pullen placed fourth at 170 pounds in Class 3A. “It’s been a really good season,” Pullen said. “Obviously, it didn’t end the way I wanted it to with a loss, but honestly, this is by far more than I expected at the beginning of the year. I’m very proud of my accomplishments.”

Style points were not on Plainfield North senior Matt Hennessey’s priority list as he reached the 220-pound finals at the Class 3A state championship at State Farm Center in Champaign Saturday.

It may not have been pretty; a 12-11 decision over crosstown rival Tom Gustafson of Plainfield Central, but Hennessey won the state title.

It was the first state title for a male athlete in Plainfield North history, and it completed a 44-0 senior season for the Old Dominion recruit. He is the first Tigers’ wrestler to be a two-time state medalist.

While not quite as high scoring as the previous season’s 134-122 North win, the game went down to the final minute before the South came away with the win.

Miller scored 14 points in the game, which will be his last organized basketball one. A 3-sport standout, including being quarterback of the football team, he will continue his college career as a pitcher at at Western Michigan.

“I’m going to miss it a lot ,” Miller said of basketball. “But I’m looking forward to an awesome baseball career at Western Michigan.”

Lockport’s Deondre Cooper (4 points) and a trio of players from Minooka - twins Keegan (3 points) and Kyle (2 points) Graebner. along with Brandon Hill (11 points).

Charles McKinney (19 points) led four players from Joliet West that wee on the South team. The others were Smith (7 points) along with Derron Williams (7 points) and Darren Williams (6 points).

“We were just playing and having a good time,” said Darren Williams, who will look to continue to play basketball at a junior college in Iowa. “At the end we just started playing defense and sharing the ball.”

As the only senior starter for the Benet Academy girl basketball team, Tsimba Malonga knew she was capable of scoring.

But after suffering a hyperextended knee and missing a few weeks in the middle of the season, she didn’t always get that opportunity.

So playing in her final high school game, the University of Denver recruit showed what she is capable of. Malonga poured in all 21 of her points in the second half to easily help her North squad double up the South team 88-44 in girls game.

Malonga is the second Benet player to win the MVP award. Emily Eschoo won it in 2015.

The 21 points were tied with Plainfield Central’s Hennessey Handy (‘16) for the second most in the girls all-star game. Plainfield East’s Gabby Williams (‘13) holds the record with 24 points.

When Malonga was notified in the final minutes that she was close to the record, she did what many of the great players do. She passed to another player.

As the game went, it hardly mattered as the North led 28-13 at halftime and then scored 60 second half points to easily break the girls

Joliet West’s Sarah Gersch made an impact not only on the court, but also off of it for the Tigers. That’s why basketball coach John Placher nominated her for the annual Voyager Media Award for her display of character, class and sportsmanship on and off the court.

That was the Jeremy Izzo Character Award, which is named after the former Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball coach, who passed away in 2010. Gersch was this year’s recipient and was presented the award after the game.

SMITH DELIVERS When Gabby Smith stepped on the floor for her first season of basketball for the Raiders, she knew her class could be the one to get the Bolingbrook girls basketball program back on track.

As her senior season wound down – she knew they had done just that.

On the season, Smith averaged 19 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game, leading the Raiders to their first sectional title since Chris

Smith took over as head coach.

For her efforts, Gabby Smith was the 2018 Voyager Media Player of the Year.

Smith was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A/4A All State first team.

She continued her career next season at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

SENT PACKING For anyone who plays college football, their ultimate dream is to hear their name called at the NFL Draft as one of the more than 250 selections by one of the 32 teams of the National Football League.

That was the dream of Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster — at least for 240 or so picks.

Toward the end of the seventh — and final — round, Lancaster and his agent had agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent.

And with a Packer hat in hand, he informed those close to him of the exciting news.

The only issue was that there were still teams that could select him and ruin the moment.

Lancaster did not hear his name, signed, and became a Packer as he

had wanted.

Lancaster, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 313 pound Romeoville resident, was signed by Green Bay as a defensive lineman, a position he played at Northwestern after converting from offensive line after high school.

With that opportunity at Northwestern, he became a beast in the middle of the defensive line and was a three-year starter. He posted 40 tackles (9.5 for loss) with two sacks as a senior. His junior year, he recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for loss) and tallied 33 tackles (5.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as a sophomore.

His senior year, he was voted by his teammates to wear jersey No.1, an honor for any Wildcat player, as it is given to the player who best represents the character of the program.

While the Packers are a good fit on the field for Lancaster, the 3.5-hour drive is a good fit for his family to watch him — which a big inspiration.

Family gained a new meaning for Lancaster the past year or so.

Lancaster’s dad, Brad, died in January after a battle with cancer.

DEAR DAVE, I’m on Baby Step 1 of your plan, and I work at a college that takes a mandatory 20 percent from our pay for retirement. I know you say retirement contributions should be put on hold until all debt except for your home is paid off, so do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? It feels like it’s hard to get traction with getting control of my money when so much is being taken out of every paycheck.

– KRISTI DEAR KRISTI, That is a lot to take out. I’ve heard of a few places that have a mandatory 12 percent contribution, but 20 percent? That’s very unusual. And it’s unusually high.

I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, you took the job. It’s what you signed up for. But if it becomes enough of an issue with your finances, you may have to decide at some point if you still want to work there. My recommendation is to begin setting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement after you’ve paid off all debt except your home, and you have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank.

At least you’re not losing the money, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s your money that’s going in there for your use some day. I don’t know the exact structure of the retirement account, but it is going toward retirement savings of some kind—and that’s important!

No judicial sale fee shall be paid by the mortgagee acquiring the residential real estate pursuant to its credit bid at the sale or by any mortgagee, judgment creditor, or other lienor acquiring the residential real estate whose rights in and to the residential real estate arose prior to the sale. All payments shall be made in cash or certified funds payable to the Sheriff of Will County.

In the event the property is a condominium, in accordance with 735 ILCS 5/15-1507(c)(1) (H-1) and (H-2), 765 ILCS 605/9(g)(5), and 765 ILCS 605/18.5(g-1), you are hereby notified that the purchaser of the unit, other than a mortgagee, shall pay the assessments and legal fees required by subdivisions (g)(1) and (g)(4) of Section 9 and the assessments required by subsection (g-1) of Section 18.5 of the Illinois Condominium Property Act. Pursuant to Local Court Rule 11.03 (J) if there is a surplus following application of the proceeds of sale, then the plaintiff shall send written notice pursuant to 735 ILCS 5/15-1512(d) to all parties to the proceeding advising them of the amount of the surplus and that the surplus will be held until a party obtains a court order for its distribution or, in the absence of an order, until the surplus is forfeited to the State.
