Romeoville man fills school board vacancy Realty broker Victor Zackof fills open position from Chrystal Hansen’s resignation The Valley View School District 365U Board of Education has named Romeoville resident Victor Zack to fill a vacancy on the board created by the resignation of Chrystal Hansen who has moved out of the district.

A broker for ASAP Realty, Zack is a White Oak Library trustee and is active in the Hampton Park Social and Athletic Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Romeoville Historical Society.

A graduate of Elmhurst College

with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business management, his expertise is in the area of communications, problem solving, interpersonal relationships, planning and team building.

Zack will join the board immediately and will serve for the remaining four months of Hansen’s term.

Bolingbrook resident Hansen held the position until last month, having moved from the area, giv-

ing up her seat a few months shy of her term’s end this April.

Fifteen candidates applied for the position and the school board internally narrowed the candidates down to five and had been conducting interviews to select a new member.

The four-year seat will be on the April ballot and board members elected in April will take their seats at the May 1 meeting.

Toyota expands community partnership Toyota will be bringing a new state-of-the-art dealership, Romeoville Toyota, to Weber Road

Though its physical site is not yet constructed, Toyota is making its presence known in Romeoville.

Jim Thomas of Thomas Toyota of Joliet recently donated $10,000 to the Romeoville Police Department to help with the relocation of its animal shelter, which is currently located near the Public Works Department.

Toyota will be bringing a new state-of-the-art dealership, Romeoville Toyota, to Weber Road, including a 46,000-square-

foot building with a showroom, sales area, service areas and office space.

The 5.8-acre site, now vacant, is to be located at the southwest corner of Weber Road and Grand Haven Circle, and is part of the Rose Plaza subdivision.

“Thomas Toyota has been great to work with and we are very excited to see this project progress,” said Mayor John Noak. “They are already showing what a great community partner they are, having made this donation in addition to their sponsorship of Winter Wonderland.”

In an attempt to improve traffic flow the village of Bolingbrook is looking to reconstruct the intersection of Rodeo Drive and Kings Road with a new roundabout.

The village plans to host an informal meeting to introduce and discuss the project to the public from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Village Hall board room, 375 W. Briarcliff Road.

Anyone interested in the project is invited to attend.

Village representatives are expected to address the need for the project, its design, engineering analysis and also provide drawings, maps, aerial photography and examples of roundabout use during the meeting.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon on Dec. 7 at the Republic Banquet Hall in Joliet that offered a presentation highlighting the state of the county.

The annual event seated a number of community leaders and elected officials as Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. addressed the outlook of Will County in reviewing what was achieved in 2016 and what’s to come.

“Despite the challenges we face in Illinois, Will County remains strong both economically and fiscally, but most importantly as a community that supports our neighbors when they are in need,” Walsh said. “We continue to see numerous positive attributes that we can be proud of throughout all of our local communities.”

The county board took action recently to approve a 2017 budget of $569 million that is balanced that intends to meet the county’s needs.

Walsh said elected officials worked hard to adopt a budget that all sides could agree on.

“Our continued history of fiscal prudence has enabled Will County to maintain a AA-plus bond rating,” he said. “This rating recognizes the counties commitment to stable fund balances, controlled expenditures, long-term planning and strong fiscal policies. It also allows us more favorable rates when borrowing for capital projects.”

Noting the need to prioritize for county building updates, Walsh said elected officials have worked diligently over the years to put plans for change into motion.

In 2011, officials created a county master plan to detail and prioritize facility improvements.

Walsh said in some cases, this guide they adopted called for consolidation or reduction of offices.

The master plan is hoped to guide officials in taking action, he said.

Bolingbrook camp prepares to become county program center Camp building’s roof was replaced in November This past spring, Camp Fire Illinois Prairie’s Camp Kata Kani in Bolingbrook celebrated 60 years of serving local Camp Fire youth and now plans to expand are in the works.

The site of the council’s popular summer day camp, Kata Kani has been a local area destination for Camp Fire youth since before Bolingbrook was incorporated as a village. Now the council is upgrading the existing camp building and facilities as it plans to expand

the programs it offers at Kata Kani, creating a site for Camp Fire’s educational programs and youth clubs.

“We have always had a strong presence in Bolingbrook primarily through our summer day camp,” said CEO Jennifer Fair Margraf.

Using the camp as a program and club site, we will soon be able to bring our unique programming to even more Will County youth.”

In its first step, the camp building’s roof was replaced in November, and plans are in place to upgrade bathrooms and other interior facilities in spring 2017.

These repairs and upgrades have been made possible in part by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Will County, supplemented by the council’s own funds.

Drop off burned out holiday lights at 8 county locations Reusing gift bags and recycling saves energy and even prevents water pollution Three Will County offices are joining the County’s five permanent residential electronic recycling drop-off sites to give residents opportunities to dispose of unwanted, burned out, or horribly twisted string holiday lights.

Holiday lights may be dropped off in the lobbies of the County Office Building, 302 N Chicago St., Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County, 421 Doris Ave., and the Land Use Department, 58 E Clinton, until Jan. 31.

“In the spirit of the season, let’s give the Earth we depend upon a gift by recycling. String lights are one of hundreds of items we can keep out of our landfills while preserving our natural resources,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

Marta Keane, Recycling Program Specialist with the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division, encouraged residents to incorporate green activities into their lives this holiday season.

“Making reuse and recycling part of holiday celebrations can be fun, and using our drop-offs

is a great family activity. Reusing gift bags and recycling saves energy and even prevents water pollution.

“We remind everyone to recycle wrapping paper, boxes, envelopes and various containers that are generated at this time of the year,” said Keane.

Permanent residential electronic recycling sites are open at the following times and places: Joliet, 57 W. Making space for New Year Tips on how to de-clutter various areas of your life so you can create physical and mental space for something new As we enter the final month of the year, you may be pondering how to make 2017 your best year yet.

Here are some tips on how to declutter various areas of your life so you can create physical and mental space for something new and exciting in the year ahead.

If you want to eat more healthily, declutter your kitchen.

Clear out food items that don’t align with your new eating habits.

Let go of small appliances, utensils, etc. that aren’t in sync with your new healthy lifestyle.

For example, say goodbye to the deep fryer or cookbooks that the new, healthier you won’t need.

You can donate unopened foods that are still within the freshness date to your local food pantry, and find charitable organizations who will appreciate your other unneeded items.

If you want to lose weight, de-clutter your closet.

To help you keep your eye on your goal, create space in your closet for the size you intend to become.

Let go of a few items in the size you are right now, as well as larger sizes, to create space for the new, slimmer you.

It’s hard to spend meaningful time with family if your calendar is packed with commitments that have you constantly on the go.

Scrutinize your current commitments and let go of activities that no

longer energize or inspire you.

Consider replacing these obligations with family-centered activities or free time that can be used for family events.

If you want more energy at work, declutter your desk and files.

Feel your energy shift as you toss or shred paperwork you no longer need.

Feel inspired to take on new, exciting projects as you delete old files that represent prior responsibilities.

Of course, if you must keep information for legal reasons or to comply with company retention policies, move applicable items to an archive area or archive folder that’s separate from your active files.

If you want to be more financially responsible, de-clutter your wallet and purse.

By de-cluttering and organizing your wallet and purse, you make it easier to track spending and stay on top of bills.

Bolingbrook native Pineda ends season in College Cup with the University of North Carolina

HOUSTON — An epic soccer shoot-out on Friday night left the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and Plainfield East graduate Mauricio Pineda one game short of claiming a national title in 2016.

The No. 9-ranked Tar Heels had been seeking their second national title in three years. The loss capped a whirlwind year of soccer for the Tar Heels freshman defender.

Last December, Pineda who follows a long line of soccer playing siblings was just graduating early from high school.

Less than a month after graduation, 6-foot, 175-pound native of Bolingbrook joined Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire first team in pre-season training camp.

The camp would be something that Pineda looked back on following the national semifinal loss late Friday night in the bowels of BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.

“Graduating early definitely helped me prepare me a lot,” said Pineda following the match.

Training with the first team (Chicago Fire) definitely helped me get ready to come play at UNC.” It was just nine short months ago that Pineda had signed his

national letter intent with the University of North Carolina, in a recruiting class that ranked first in the nation and now here he was on December 9, 2016 playing every minute of the semifinal game that the Tar heels had hoped to win.

Throughout his more than 100 minutes logged on the pitch including extra time on Friday night, he had complete control of the left side of midfield helping to building the bridge between a defense that bent but did not break and an offense that sought the game’s only goal.

In the 45th minute of play, the young midfielder gathered in a loose ball at the top of the box and let loose with a cannon shot that just sailed over the crossbar as time expired.

It was perhaps the Tar Heels best opportunity of the night.

Pineda’s performance on Friday night was indicative of his soccer lineage. His sister Cindy is a senior midfielder for the Notre Dame Lady Irish soccer team the Mexico youth national teams. His brother Victor, the first homegrown player signed by the Chicago Fire in 2010 and now is a member of the NASL Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

West never missed granting a wish When the 2017 version of the Wish Upon A Star Softball in the Snow tournament takes place on over the weekend of Jan. 20-21, it will do so for the first time at Joliet’s Inwood sports complex.

Unfortunately, that will not be the biggest difference.

The event - one of the biggest annual fundraisers for Wish Upon A Star - will happen without the founder, organizer and face of the event.

Don West died last week from complications from lung cancer.

He was 64 years old.

Through the years, I had the chance to deal with Don on both a professional and personal level.

Personally, I attended a few of the fundraisers over the years to watch a band, have a few drinks

and support the organization.

Then as time went on, I became friends with Don’s son, Booter, and throug him was able to meet Don on a whole different level - one I am glad I had the opportunity to have.

And while I can’t publish all of the stories, there is one I will share.

It was right after I came to the

Bugle and we started the Joliet paper that Don called me up and asked if I would cover a wish being granted.

Of course, I agreed and went to Cemeno’s Pizza to watch Don and the Wish Upon a Star board present a young man with tickets to the Super Bowl.

After pesenting the tickets, Don walked over to me and sat down and I will never forget as the young man was sitting and beaming from ear to ear - forgetting for a moment that he was sick - Don leaned over and told me how hard it was for Wish Upon A Star to acquire the tickets and all the different avenues he tried and how many failed before he finally was ablt to secure the tickets.

He then looked at the young

man, looked back at me and said, “We don’t miss granting a wish.”

And he didn’t.

I have no clue the countless of wishes Don and the crew were able to grant - but I could tell right then how proud he was to be able to grant every wish to every sick child - no matter if it was a trip to Disney World, meeting a celebrity or securing one of the toughest tickets in sports - he was going to make it happen.

I have no doubt that even without Don around, Wish Upon A Star will continue to grant wishes. The organization has great board members and dedicated volunteers that will keep it going in his memory.

Wish Upon A Star will continue to make those kids forget

for a moment the pain and suffering they deal with every day and to do so, they will continue to need the support of the community.

So this season, as the winter benefit gets geared up - get ready to go support the event by playing softball, watching or going to the indoor festivities which will be held in the Inwood Multipirpose Center.

For the players - reservations are going on now.

Cost is $200 per team .

If enough teams sign up, games will start the evening of Friday, Jan. 20 and will wrap up the day of the benefit on Saturday the 21st.

Flyers’ season ends in semifinals The post-season run of the Lewis University women’s volleyball team came to an end Dec. 9 as the Flyers fell to Concordia University, St. Paul in three sets 25-18, 25-16, 25-16 during the Final Four of the NCAA National Championship.

Lewis fought very hard to try and come away with a win in the match that saw ten ties, and six lead changes. The first set had a slow start for the Flyers as they fell behind by eleven at one point but they were able to come back and bring the set within six, however they would not be able to take back the lead for the set. It was a similar story for the second and third sets as Lewis would take the lead but Concordia would jump ahead and hold the lead to the end. Lewis would close in but Concordia would pull away and eventually win.

“For us it was a really tough match, Concordia is extremely good.” Lewis head women’s coach Lorelee Smith said. “I’m extremely proud of the way my team fought, I don’t think they ever gave up. Obviously there are things we need to work on, but as a team they took a huge step forward this year.”

The Flyers’ redshirt junior Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./ Nerinx Hall) had the most kills on the team with ten, while freshman Caroline Stefanon and sophomore Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) both had six kills.

Redshirt sophomore Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./ Menomonee Falls) turned in 27 assists. Seliga and Hyland also contributed on defense with eight digs a piece.

For the match the Flyers hit .176 percent while the Golden Bears hit .402 percent. It was a tough loss for Lewis, but will serve as a learning experience for next season With the loss the Flyers end their season 29-8 and move on into the off-season. With the hopeful return of key players like Hyland and Seliga A match earlier, Lewis went head-to-head with the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit University and walked away victorious over the champions of the 2015 season.

The Flyers started the match hot taking set one 25-17. Sets two and three were much closer however neither team being able to put the other away easily.

Lewis was still able to pick up the win taking set two 26-24 and set three 30-28.

For the match junior Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) led in kills with 15, while Seliga contributed 12.

Redshirt senior Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 28 digs for the match and Becker had 44 assists.

Lewis as a team had a .205 hitting percentage for the match compared to the Cardinals’ .103 percent. With the win the Flyers move to 29-7, while Wheeling Jesuit finishes it’s season 41-3.

After the completion of the NCAA tournament Becker and Seliga werer named to the AllTournament Team.

Becker the Flyer’s setter ended the tournament with 180 assists over the course of the five games and added 21 kills to her performance. For the season Becker had 1,465 assists getting 10.93 assists per set. Seliga had 56 kills during the tournament, hitting .421 percent. The Lewis right side hitter had 345 kills for the season and hit .274.

“In the midst of tough competition it was nice to see they were still able to excel and standout.”

Lewis women’s volleyball head coach Lorelee Smith said.

Thanks to the two performances from Seliga and Becker the Flyers finished their season making it to the NCAA Final Four, the furthest the team has ever made it while coached by Coach Smith. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Lewis University women’s basketball took on UW-Parkside at Neil Carey Arena Sunday (Dec. 11) hoping to add to their win total. The Flyers struggled in the first half trailing the Rangers by one but were able to take the lead thanks to a third quarter surge and came away victorious at the end of regulation, 74-62.

Lewis’ duo of sophomore Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./ Waukesha North) and redshirt senior Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) played at the level of what’s come to be expected of them as they combined for 56 points.

Johnson dropped 25 points on 5-14 shooting and came away with two steals for the game.

Kelliher went off for 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to earn a double-double for the game.

The Flyers as a team shot 47.2 percent compared to the 31.8 percent shooting of the Rangers, and Lewis also out-rebounded UWP 44 to 30.

With the win Lewis moves to 9-2 (3-0 GLVC) while UW-Parkside drops to 1-8 (0-3 GLVC).

MEN’S BASKETBALL The Lewis University men’s basketball team drained 14 firsthalf three-pointers, led by a career-high 28 points and six trifectas from sophomore Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights), in the 85-73 wireto-wire non-conference win over St. Francis (Ill.) at Neil Carey Arena on Wednesday (Dec. 7).

Blaylock was 10-for-17 from the field and 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. The Flyers also received 14 points and six assists from senior guard Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and 12 points and five rebounds from sophomore center Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison).

With the win, Lewis improves to 5-4 on the campaign, while the Fighting Saints drop to 5-4.

For the game, Lewis shot 53.6% (15-for-36) from long range, while the Fighting Saints were equally up to the task, knocking down 13-for-25 of their threepointers. Five different Flyers hit at least two three-pointers on the evening.

MEN’S TRACK Lewis University men’s track and field competed in the Charlie Foster Classic on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 9 and 10).

Despite Lewis not placing as a team the Flyers did still have some highlights for the meet.

Junior Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) turned in another solid performance winning the 60 meter hurdles in 8.53 seconds and the 60 meter dash in 7.19 seconds. Holesinger also took third in the long jump leaping 21’ 7 1/2” as well as taking third in shot put throwing 39’ 5 3/4”.

Sophomore Marcus Holley (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) walked away from the meet with his own achievement making a NCAA Provisional qualifying leap in the pole vault getting over 15’ 3 1/2”.

The next meet for Lewis will be the Illiana Invite on January 13, hosted in the Lewis Field House.

Get student loan monkey off your back If I’m in your shoes, I want that student loan out of my life as quickly as possible DEAR DAVE, I’m 38 years old, and I’ve got $12,000 in student loans still hanging over my head. It’s the only debt I have.

I make $30,000 a year, and I’ve managed to save $12,000, but I’m also driving a junky, old car that will have to be replaced soon.

Should I split the money I’ve saved and buy a $6,000 car while paying off $6,000 of the student loan?

PHIL DEAR PHIL, If I’m in your shoes, I want that student loan out of my life as quickly as possible.

At the same time, I don’t want you living life without some money in the bank.

If you’ve followed me for very long, you know I teach the Baby Steps when it comes to getting out of debt and saving money.

Baby Step 1 is to save a beginner

emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is to pay off all debt, except for your home, using the debt snowball method.

The third Baby Step is to build a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

You don’t have quite enough on hand for your idea and to have something left over. I recommend paying off $11,000 of the school loan now and then finishing it up as you go.

It won’t take much more time.

Limp along in the beater for a little while longer and then, when you have no student loan debt, finish your emergency fund and start a car fund.

I talk to a lot of people your age who still have student loan debt.

But you have the opportunity to punch its lights out in a hurry. If you pour on the coals, you should be able to save money and get a better car in just a few months!

and building credit.

We’ve always followed your plan and taught her to do the same.

When she asked the instructor if no credit score was as good as a high credit score, the instructor said no.

He told the class the only way to buy a home without a high credit rating is by having a huge amount of assets or savings.

I think I know your answer, but how do I explain this to an 18-year-old?

ALLISON DEAR ALLISON, Well, the first thing you explain is that college instructors—even tenured college professors—can be absolutely wrong sometimes.

A few years ago my daughter took a personal finance class in college, and on the first day the instructor went on a rant saying Dave Ramsey is stupid.

He didn’t know I was her dad, but she went through the entire class and never said a word.

When she called home and asked what she should do, we told her to take the class and give him

the answers he wants on the tests.

We reminded her that she’s just taking a class, and that doesn’t mean she has to form her life opinions around what that guy thinks.

Sit down with your daughter and gently explain in this instance her instructor doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. Explain to her you can get a home loan even if you have no credit score.

People do it all the time. There are places like Churchill Mortgage that would be happy to give her an example of this process. It’s called manual underwriting. All you have to do is make a reasonable down payment, have two years at the same job, and provide two years of tax returns.

VVSD students named State Scholars Scholars represent approximately top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools in Illinois

For only the third time ever, more than 100 Valley View School District 365U seniors have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).

Since 1958, ISAC annually honors top Illinois high school students with the designation based on ACT or SAT test scores and their sixth semester class rank, class size and unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA).

Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state.

Walsh said they have worked hard to address the issue by working with legislators at the state and federal levels to drive the drug out of the community.

“They have joined in these efforts by sponsoring important legislation to address the issues of education, treatment and incarceration relating to the heroin abuse,” he said. “But, there is still much work to be done to save lives and drive heroin out of Will County, the state of Illinois and the entire United States.”

The county is entering the second year of a partnership between Plainfield School District and the Robert Crown Center for Health Education to deliver a heroin prevention curriculum to eighth grade students.

Officials are also working with Lincoln-way and Wilmington school district to offer this curriculum to eighth and ninth-grade students.

“Research has shown that kids are smart and if we give the information they need, they will make educated choices,” he said. “In previous years, we offered three pilot programs of this heroin prevention program to the Valley View district, to Joliet Township High School and the Troy Middle School district. It’s an extremely wise investment to keep our children away from Heroin and ensuing consequences both legal and physical that occur with drug abuse.”

Walsh added that while officials understand there is still much work to be done to expand treatment and develop alternatives to arrest and incarceration, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

The State Scholar Program identifies graduating high school seniors who possess superior academic potential. Students from nearly every high school in Illinois compete in the program. pecially high potential for success in college.
