VVSD Students Learn to Support Their Community through Fundraising Efforts

As part Goal 4 and Strategy 7 of the VVSD Strategic Plan, VVSD students are taught how they can make a difference by participating in various charitable activities.

The activities range from high school students volunteering at the Chicago Marathon, to middle school students collecting food for needy families in their own school communities, to elementary students donating money to various organizations.

GRAND Luncheon Part of Book Fair Week at Irene King

The first week of December is Book Fair Week at Irene King Elementary School and the Book Fair is being enhanced by several other special events during the week. One of those events is the GRAND Luncheon to which students could invite Grandparents, Relatives, Aunts or Uncles, Neighbors, or a Devoted caregiver to share lunch and then browse at the Book Fair.

Hermansen Teachers Test Drive Lesson to Teach Students to Improve Communication

As part of Goal 1 and Strategy 2 of the VVSD strategic plan, 3rd grade teachers at Hermansen Elementary School “test drove” an exercise designed to help students learn to communicate. Being able to listen is not enough. Truly understanding what another person is saying, and being able to communicate understanding or, explaining the barrier to understanding is a key communication skill students need to acquire.

Heritage Spanish IV (Spanish for native speakers) students from both Bolingbrook HS and Romeoville HS experienced mock interviews with community members in Spanish as part of the class unit entitled “The Education of Latinos in the U.S.” The unit focuses on empowering Latino students to continue their education beyond high school, understand the process for applying to college, and to assimilate to a new culture.

Illinois 5Essentials Survey Now Open to Valley View Parents

Valley View School District 365U is joining the Illinois State Board of Education in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, the seventh statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. Now through Jan. 18, students, teachers and parents can take a 25-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. This survey will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation.

Mumps outbreak at Lewis causes graduation cancellation With up to nine cases reported on students getting mumps, Lewis has postponed several events in effort to resolve the case

Along with other campus events, a mumps outbreak at Lewis University has caused the campus to postpone the December commencement ceremony until May 17-19.

“I don’t feel good about being on campus today, I’m an older student with kids at home but I have finals so there’s not much I can do about it,” said Lewis student Michael, who followed direction by the University to not give last names to media. “I’m graduating but I obviously won’t be walking this December or next May because I’m going to Law school. Myself and all of the other students work very hard and I would of liked to show my kids that hard work pays off and you can get recognized but now I just have to wait for the University to mail [my diploma] to me.”

There has been one case confirmed, with around nine other potential cases of mumps that have been reported.

“Our focus from the start was to maintain the academic experience for our students at this critical time, while still being concerned with the students health,” said Joe Falese, Senior VP for student services. “We’ve made a lot of changes in the events, schedules and other gathering where there will be people from the outside coming.”

The initial gradation ceremony was scheduled to take place Dec. 15-16, but because of the sudden outbreak, that and many other campus events have been cancelled.

“It was a very difficult and disappointing decision but again in cooperation with Will County speaking from the criteria to bring 2,500 to 3,000 on our campus while we’re considered in a mumps outbreak would not be the thing to do,” Falese said. “We share the disappointment with our students, but it was a decision we needed to make.”

The university has also cancelled all remaining events through Dec. 28, but class schedules will remain the same.

“Our Heritage play, basketball games and other events that have large external audiences were cancelled with some being rescheduled,” Falese said.

Will County Health Department officials are recommending that medical providers and hospitals throughout the county take full precautions if someone enters their offices with typical mumps symptoms.

These would especially include swollen salivary glands around the ears, mouth, and neck areas; in addition to fevers, headaches, body aches or flu like symptoms, in addition to swollen glands.

WCHD officials say one of

the potentially biggest mistakes that can be made is to assume that someone with those symptoms has no chance of having the mumps just because they have already had the standard two doses of the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine.

Someone with the swollen salivary glands might not be even considered for mumps testing because they have both MMR shots on their records, but mumps should not be excluded as a possibility in those cases.

Records show that the majority of the suspected mumps cases at Lewis University do indeed involve students who have had the two doses. The Health Department is also recommending that those with two previous MMR vaccines who have come in contact, or believe they were in the presence of anyone with confirmed mumps or mumps symptoms should make an appointment for their third MMR mumps shot as soon as possible.

A third MMR shot is not needed for those who are showing mumps symptoms or have already tested positive for mumps, due to the natural immunity of the mumps virus.

“Across the University there is extreme disappointment and our hearts go out to all of our students,” Falese said. “With this situation and the way it has unfolded, it has been a very difficult time for us as a community, but I’m very proud of the way our community has responded with the focus on public health and the critical functions for our students to have the academic experience.”

Gray’s legacy leaves a bridge to the future for southern Illinois

BY HOLLY KEE OF THE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS LOCAL MEDIA GROUP In 1956, a little-known freshman congressman from Franklin County in southern Illinois gave his first major speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, receiving a standing ovation for his efforts. In that speech, amateur magician Kenneth J. Gray from West Frankfort, used his skills to illustrate the “rosy” prospects of then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway Act. Carrying a bouquet of red roses, Gray illustrated the interference of lobbyists and special interests that he said were “killing” the program by snapping flowers off the stems until all the blossoms were gone. At the conclusion of the speech, Gray suggested the lobbyists would fail and all would be “rosy” again, holding up the bouquet with white roses blooming from the bare stems.

In a political career that spanned 24 years in Congress, Gray was responsible for bringing nearly $7 billion in public works projects to southern Illinois.

Using earmarks on bills often referred to as “pork barrel politics,” Gray’s ability to score for his district earned him the moniker “the Prince of Pork.”

“It was a title he embraced,” said his daughter, Becky Gray-Clay. “My dad knew that those projects meant jobs for people in southern Illinois.”

In what would become an infamous interview with The Southern Illinoisan in 2008, Gray said, “They call Rend Lake pork. Yet the engineers, six years ago when there was tremendous flooding, said that because of Rend Lake, more than $100 million worth of property downstream was saved. If that is pork, pass me the plate, another heaping serving.”

Part of that quote ended up as the title of a book about Gray’s life by a pair of local authors and educators, Marleis Trover and Maxine Pyle. “Pass the Plate: the Legend and Legacy of United States Congressman Kenneth J. Gray” tells Gray’s story via a walk down memory lane that showcases the man that Trover describes as “one of the most effective congressmen of the 20th century.”

Trover said Gray understood the most important job of a leader is to provide hope.

“Each time he showed off southern Illinois,” Trover said, “he brought more

people here or he connected our area with officials in other cities.”

Although he never went to college, Gray educated himself about his area and beyond. He exaggerated his age to 18 to enlist during World War II, Trover said.

The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide.

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim, near, “You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day;

You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wideWhy build you this bridge at the evening tide?”

The builder lifted his old gray head: “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way.

This chasm, that has been naught to me, To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.

He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.”

Gray’s exaggeration, including his colorful suits, bow ties, red permed hair, and even his modes of transportation, made him stand out, giving him instant recognition.

After returning from World War II, Gray served as commander of the American Legion for the 15-county area, providing services to help reintegrate the returning soldiers.

“Having flown in the war, Kenny used his skills to pilot a helicopter around southern Illinois,” Trover said. “He later used what he saw in those counties to identify priorities to raise the standard of living for all the people of southern Illinois.”

Gray’s influence can be seen all over southern Illinois, starting with Interstate 57, part of which is now named Ken Gray Expressway in his honor.

Many small towns have post offices thanks to Gray. Rend Lake is another of the “pork” projects Gray brought to southern Illinois. Rend Lake spurred economic growth when a boat factory opened nearby that offered steady em-

ployment to an area with little opportunity. Gray sponsored infrastructure bills that helped jumpstart the growth of industry throughout his district, including in Marion, where Pepsi MidAmerica, one of the area’s largest employers, is located. Former Mayor Bob Butler, the longest serving mayor in Illinois history, worked closely with Gray to secure federal funding that enabled Marion to grow. Butler told Trover he was “irritated” when Gray was referred to as “the Prince of Pork.”

“He was just better at it than anyone else and they couldn’t stand it,” Butler said. Gray’s wheeling and dealing with Washington’s elite also brought the Marion Federal Penitentiary, Devil’s Kitchen Dam, Olmsted Lock and Dam, numerous federal housing projects, an expansion project for the Marion Veterans Administration Medical Center, education funding and funding for the arts.

For Gray, it was never about power or personal gain; it was always about the people. “When you came into his office, it didn’t matter if you were Democrat or Republican,” Gray-Clay said. “You were his constituent and he would help you.”

Gray was popular at home and gained respect in Washington’s inner circles. He was frequently called upon by House leaders such as Sam Rayburn and Tip O’Neill to stand in as the speaker protem. He frequently appeared in public with presidents John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan. Gray retired in 1989. He continued to be active in the district, lending a hand as an auctioneer, appearing at various dinners and fundraisers, or offering advice to his successors.

Gray died on July 12, 2014, at age 89.

He enjoyed reciting parables and poems, with one of his favorites being Allen Dromgoole’s “The Bridge Builder.”

Gray left a legacy that has become a bridge for the southern part of Illinois, one that preserves the beauty of the land but still connects the rural areas to other parts of the country.

When Elizabeth Hyland was leaving Plainfield Central in 2014, she had offers to play volleyball at a Division I university and compete at the highest collegiate in her sport.

Instead, Hyland chose to play for DII Lewis University and stay close to home.

Four years and a record-setting career later – Hyland proved she made the right decision.

Hyland’s career came to a close in the NCAA Division II semifinal loss in four sets to Western Washington.

Along the way, however, she became of the best players to ever step call Neil Carey Arena home.

Hyland ended her career as the Flyers’ all-time leader in kills with 1,687, she is tops in points scored with 1,960, third in digs (1,703) and third in sets played

To go along with the numbers, Hyland was tabbed as the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year, she was a D2CCA All-American.

Hyland was a three-time AVCA All-American, three-time AVCA All-Region First Team selection, two-time D2CCA All-Midwest Region, three-time All-GLVC First Team. She was awarded the Baden/GLVC Offensive Player of the Week six times and earned defensive player of the week once.

A computer science major, Hyland was a four-time Academic All-GLVC Team member, member of the CoSIDA 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Women’s Volleyball Team and has been a recipient of the Br. David Delahanty Award given to Lewis student-athletes for academic excellence – every season.

Flyers sign seven baseball players for 2020 Lewis University head baseball coach Tim McDonough announced that Angelo Cantelo, Jake Huisman, Jacob Karaba, Patrick Keaty, Joe Pruesser, Jake Schwartz and Zach Teegen will join the Flyers for the 2020 season.

“These seven young men all have bright futures ahead them,” McDonough said. “We wanted to continue to get more athletic, more physical and continue to get left-handed from an offensive standpoint and we were able to accomplish that with this group.

We also needed to bring in arms that have upside and the ability to come in on day one and make an impact and were able to that as well.

“On top of the talent each of these young men bring to the field, they are all even better people,” McDonough continued.

“The work ethic and character they will bring to the table will impact the program in a positive way now and in the future.

“Coach (Mike) Vucsko did a remarkable job identifying and cultivating relationships with

this group,” McDonough stated.

“Four position players and three pitchers set us up very well for the future. This group possesses physical raw tools, but even more than that they are all tough baseball players with tremendous baseball IQ’s as well. We are one or two pitchers away from this being the best recruiting class we’ve had in my time here at Lewis.”

• Angelo Cantelo (Catcher/First Base - 6’1” – 210 – Marian Catholic – White Sox ACE) Cantelo, a three-year varsity starter helped lead Marian Catholic to the state championship 3A game as a sophomore. As a junior he batted .407 with a .471 on-base percentage, three home runs and 24 runs batted in. He was selected to the East Suburban Catholic AllConference team and the E.S.C.C Defensive Player of the Year.

His honors for Marian Catholic helped tab him Daily Southtown All-Area Second Team accolades.

Cantelo, was voted the MVP of the Ted Radcliffe Double Duty Classic and RBI World Series. Perhaps his biggest honor in 2018 was being named the 2018 Do It Stevie’s Way

Award Winner. Cantelo, is planning on majoring in business.

• Jake Huisman (RHP – 6’2” 175 – Glenbard East High School) Huisman, a planned business administration major, helped Glenbard East to a 24-13 record as a junior and a regional championship. Huisman compiled a 2.68 ERA, struck out 21 batters in 31.1 innings pitched while only issuing nine walks. His cousin Nick Huisman (Westmont, Ill/ Timothy Christian) is a freshman pitcher for the Flyers. His uncle, Rick Huisman help lead the Flyers to three consecutive NCAA World Series appearances from 1988-1990 and was drafted in third round of MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants.

• Jacob Karaba (RHP – 6’0” – 190 – Neuqua Valley – Illinois Hawks) Karaba, a planned secondary education major helped Neuqua Valley to a 31-4 record during his junior campaign and a regional and conference championship.

He finished the year with a 2.62 ERA with 24 strikeouts. Jacob’s mom Jan obtained her bachelor’s degree from Lewis in 1993 in art.

• Patrick Keaty (Shortstop – 5’10” – 175 – South Elgin – Elite Baseball Training) Keaty, a four-year varsity starter helped lead his team to a 25-5 record during his sophomore season and a sectional championship. As a sophomore, Keaty was selected to Academic All-Conference team.

During his junior season he batted .360, with a .451 on base percentage, 14 stolen bases, and two home runs. His accolades during his junior campaign honored him to be selected to First Team All-Conference and Academic All-Conference team. Patrick’s mom Cheryl got her bachelor’s degree from Lewis in 1998 in Business Administration.

• Joe Pruesser (OF – 6’1” – 180 – South Suburban Community College) Preusser, helped South Suburban finish with a record of 38-19 in 2018. He totaled a .432 on-base percentage and stole 10 bases during his freshman season. He played his high school ball at Br. Rice High School. In 2016, he was voted the Br. Rice recipient of

the Steven Bajenski Tournament MVP. He helped Br. Rice win the Catholic League Blue division hitting .336 and stealing 15 bases his senior season.

• Jake Schwartz (RHP – 6’3” – 195 – Lake Zurich – Athletic Barn) Schwartz, a planned aviation management major, is entering his third year playing varsity baseball for Lake Zurich. As a junior he threw five scoreless innings in a regional semifinal win.

He compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.57 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched. Schwartz has been a three year honor roll student.

• Zach Teegen (OF – 6’0” – 210 – McHenry County Community College) Teegen, a planned business major, helped McHenry to a 4414 record last year and a sectional championship. He batted .380 with a .500 on base percentage, 35 runs scored, 28 runs batted in and three home runs. He earned Second Team All-Conference honors and was named to the NJCAA Academic All American Second Team.

in the stands,” Hyland said. “But one was I wanted to play right away and I knew I had a chance to do that at Lewis. If you really love the game, you will love playing no matter where you go.

“There was a grieving period after the season ended. I recently had an and of the year meeting with the coaches that we do every year and it wasn’t until that moment that I was able to reflect back on it and be proud of myself.”

In her career, Hyland posted a 122-24 record and went 42-2 at home. She also earned four rings – two as GLVC champions and two as NCAA D2 semifinalists. She joins fellow senior Abby Becker as the only players in program history to earn four rings.

“My coach at Plainfield Central, Eric Vogt, he said to leave the program better than I left it and I think I did that at Plainfield Central. My parents also taught me the same thing – to always leave everything better than you found it, even if it was just cleaning a room after I had just played with my toys,”

Hyland said. “So, when I came here, one of the reasons I chose it is because they were good, but it wasn’t a great program and I saw the potential and I had that instilled in me that I wanted to leave it better than I found it – and I think I did that.

“It is really cool knowing I had two final four finishes in four years. I want to leave a legacy that continues to improve and I think I have done that too. I am leaving a group of girls that are just as hungry for a national championship as I was. Already the redshirt freshmen are saying they will have five rings and as jealous as I would be that they had five – I hope they do it.”

This season almost didn’t happen for Hyland, as she considered using her redshirt season and taking a season off. “[in 2017] We should have been in the elite eight and that loss hurt,” she said “I went to my coach [Lorelee Smith] and I wanted to redshirt. I questioned if I was really making an impact because that should have been the year. I prayed on it and it was something God didn’t want

for me. This year for me was huge because I was going to sit this year everything we did this year was more special. I never dreamed of the player I am now and it is because of her and my teammates. Lorelee pushed me in a way no other coach has.”

Once she decided to play this season, Hyland made the 2017 loss a reminder of what she wanted to accomplish this season.

“This year, I wrote 111 on my shoes because that is the sum of all the jersey numbers from last year’s seniors,” she said. “Every time I looked down, I wanted to remember there was unfinished business.”

What Hyland said she gained from her four years as a Flyer even went beyond the wins, losses and rings – it was about people.

“Before every postseason game we would read a letter from the alumni that they wrote for us. Knowing that we come from something that is bigger than just the 15 girls in the program and how many people are backing us up is cool. Even

“My teammates from when I was a freshman are all off doing their own things, but they will text me when it’s the most important.”

Hyland will graduate in May and while she is ready to tackle the real world, she is going to use Christmas break to explore the idea of continuing her volleyball career professionally.

“I am a computer science major and my concentration is pervasive computing and that is app and web development and I find that stuff super interesting,” Hyland said. “But, my dad asked me what I would do if I could get paid to do anything and I said be a professional athlete. He told me to try and find a way to make that happen. I will start looking for a job closer to when I graduate in May, but right now, I am looking into playing overseas because I don’t think volleyball is out of me just yet.”
