Rock Bottom Restaurant hosts elected officials chili cook off fundraiser

state senator Jennifer Bertino-tarrant wins best chili By ryan ostry Bugle staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com Although the April election has long passed, officials elected are still competing against each other. Last weekend, several local politicians were featured at Rock Bottom Restaurant in Bolingbrook for a chili cook off hosted by the bipartisan group Bolingbrook United. “Tonight we have Bolingbrook United here and they’re doing the fundraiser for their event which is the chili cook off,” said manager Simon Sulaica. “The money raised will be used to help for their campaigns.” This fundraiser that raised more than $3,000 last Thursday night, hosted elected officials such as the state senator, village board members and local school board members. To participate, there was a $10 buy in where whoever paid, not only had the chance to taste all of the chili, but also help pick the winner by voting.

The winner of the chili cook off went to State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, who took home the award, “the golden spoon”. A few of the other elected officials that were there engaging with families and residents of Bolingbrook were Jason Cann, Debi Savage and Jackie Traynere. Cann, who works as a Plainfield Library Trustee, is a community activist who seeks to increase transparency in government on behalf of the taxpayers. “I think it’s very important for people to support the Bolingbrook United Group,” Cann said. “It’s important people have a different voice, for far too long people just had one vision and one voice.” Savage, is an elected Will County Regional School Board Trustee, that wants to bring her talents and ideas to the Valley View School District Board to make a more direct and impactful difference in the education and lives of Valley View students, parents and faculty. “We want to make a change in Bolingbrook,” Savage said. “We want things to be fiscally sound, we might need some help with that, but we feel like we have some really good ideas and really good people with great integrity.”

last weekend, several local politicians were featured at rock Bottom restaurant in Bolingbrook for a chili cook off hosted by the bipartisan group Bolingbrook united. Traynere, is someone who recently ran for the Mayor of Bolingbrook and has been a member of the county board since 2008. “Three years ago I won re-election to the County Board and I got together with some neighbors who were upset with how things were going in Bolingbrook,” Traynere said. “We decided it was time to ban to-

gether and figure out something we could do about it so we found some candidates and we ran them under the banner for Bolingbrook United.” Sulaica said although this event was meant for publicity for elected officials’ campaigns, it was good to see those in office and future candidates from both parties getting along and coming together for a en-

joyable fundraising event. “This is good for us at Rock Bottom because we’re helping Bolingbrook and their campaign by teaming up with the community,” Sulaica said. “It’s also nice to see even though it is a political event, for so many people to show up and all seem to be enjoying themselves while trying and enjoying some chili.”

november 1115 is school Psychologist awareness week The second week in November is National School Psychologist Awareness Week and it brings a focus to the psychologists who work in schools around the world to advance effective practices to improve students’ learning, behavior, and mental health. In VVSD, our school psychologists are essential members of the student support teams in each of our school buildings. We visited with Salk Elementary School Psychologist Ms. Lara Van Beek for a more detailed explanation about how school psychologists assist student learning, and we learned why Ms. Van Beek chose this incredibly vital profession.

Boudouris awarded board seat after recount

election results previously had been certified with Carlson having a three-vote victory over Boudouris By mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

On his final meeting as a member of the Valley View School District, James ‘JT’ Boudouris said the service of the Boudouris family had come to an end after his parents had spent more that 70 combined years working in the district. After a recount of votes, that service has returned. The Will County Clerk’s Office on Tuesday amended the results in the school board race for the Valley View School District in the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election by order of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, making Boudouris the third-highest vote getter and Sandra E. Carlson the fourthhighest vote getter. Judge Roger Rickmon discarded eight votes for Carlson in court on Tuesday because Election Judges at either a polling place or an early vot-

ing location did not initial blank ballots before they were issued to the voter. The judge’s ruling gave Boudouris 3,291 votes and Carlson 3,286 votes, a five-vote victory for Boudouris. The election results previously had been certified with Carlson having a three-vote victory over Boudouris. Boudouris challenged the outcome of this narrow election in court. “I am super excited about the outcome,” Boudouris said. “I gave a speech my last board meeting and the purpose was calling out people who have bad things to say and who spread false things about the School District and about people I know personally. That kind of divisive behavior isn’t helping. They are sewing seeds of discourse and you have no facts to speak of. They were saying bad things about other board members and spreading things about (Valley View Superintendent Dr.) Jim Mitchem and spreading rumors about the quality of the schools.

“They took that as me whining about losing.” Boudouris said when he originally challenged the votes, he was looking for abnormalities on the ballots something most candidates do when losing a close race. He never expected to find what he did. “On election night, I was up by 10 votes,” Boudouris said. “On the day the county counted the mail-in ballots, I lost by three votes - and that was what I did - I lost. A county employee approached me with a discovery recount and for $10 per precinct, I can count up to 25 percent of the precincts. That was a no-brainer. It was curiosity. I saw ballots with no judge initials - then the focus went from a long shot to there is something here. “No one can say the ballots were cast honestly and truthfully. We never came out and said there was fraud. I think very highly of Lauren Staley Ferry and her staff. I don’t think they did anything unbecoming of their jobs. There is no validation on the ballot. For everything I know, the law was followed. There was no disagreement by the judge, myself and my lawyer and the Clerk’s office that uninitialled

ballots were to be counted. All of the validated ballots were counted.” Boudouris said there was nothing personal with Carlson, who he will now replace on the board. “She seems like she is a very nice lady and none of this was personal,” he said. “I wish her the best and if she runs again, and I hope they do, I will vote for her.” Boudouris said being back on the board to him means serving the district. “When the campaigning started and the election happened, I had a newborn daughter,” he said. “I missed a lot, and I would not have sacrificed that if I didn’t care. I want to be part of this to make it better, the Romeoville and Bolingbrook schools have been a big part of my life.” The County Clerk’s Office said on a release it was “was disappointed by the judge’s decision to disregard those eight votes cast in only five precincts in the Valley View School District. The County Clerk’s Office, in a court response filed in June, argued strongly that if ballots without initials were to be disregarded, the standard should have been applied to every precinct

in the district, not just the five selected by the challenger. The Will County Clerk’s Office was prepared to devote resources needed for a district-wide examination of all ballots. The Clerk’s Office takes no interest in which candidates win their elections, but it does have an abiding commitment to the administration of the election process. The release read, “Disappointment with the court ruling does not negate the fact that training for more than 1,500 Election Judges needs improvement. The Will County Clerk took office in December and began preparing for the April 2 Consolidated Election utilizing training practices that already had been established. The process of improving those practices already has begun.” Those practices include: Revamping its Training Manual to make it easier for Election Judges to understand and use, creating online training videos to refresh and guide Election Judges on key procedures as Election Day approaches, developing plans to update Election Judges on key issues – the initialing of ballots now being the top priority – in advance of Early Voting and Election Day.

Joliet man arrested for Nov. 2 shooting By Brian stanley

Bugle staff

@BugleNewspapers bstanley@buglenewspapers.com

A Joliet man was arrested after allegedly shooting a woman in the leg Nov. 2. The shooting occurred at 4:52 p.m. in the 200 block of O’Neill Street. Police said officers arrived to find a 22-yearold woman had been shot in the leg. Her injury was not lifethreatening. Police said “a description of the possible vehicle that was used in the incident” was given out to other officers and a traffic stop was made a short time later in the 1000 block of Gardner Street. Investigators reportedly matched the driver, Dominique Travis, 26, as the suspect in the shooting. “The reason for the shooting is still being investigated,” police said. Travis was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery

with a firearm and booked into the county jail. Travis has previous pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon for a Sept. 2013 confrontation in Joliet where he shot at a group of people in the 200 block of North Broadway. He served prison time for both that incident and striking his pregnant girlfriend earlier that year. Travis was also tried on a charge of attempted murder for an Oct. 2013 shooting at a party in the 100 block of Malibu Drive in Bolingbrook. A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg, according to court records. Police said Travis fled with another man in an SUV that led officers on a high-speed chase to Joliet. During Travis’ 2014 trial, the driver of the SUV and other party guests testified they could not remember Travis attending the party and he was found not guilty.

Bolingbrook needs two overtime periods to defeat oswego in second round of Class 8a playoffs By mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com The last time Bolingbrook was in the IHSA Class 8A quarterfinals was 2014 after defeating Oswego 31-28 in overtime to get past the second round. Saturday night, the Raiders advanced again with another win over Oswego – only this time it took two overtime periods and the Raiders won 31-30. The teams traded first-play touchdowns in the first extra period and after Antonio King scored the go ahead touchdown to open the second OT, Oswego answered, but instead of sending the game to a third extra frame, the Panthers went for the twopoint conversion and the win. The ball went to defensive end Jack Hugunin, who doubles as a fullback around the goal line. “We knew who was getting the ball — that was no secret,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. Raider junior linebacker Tyler McLaurin knew whatever happened, the play was going through the 6-foot, 3-inch, 275-pound Northern Illinois University commit. “We knew we had to hit the big guy,” McLaurin said. “We knew the ball was either going to go to him or he was going to lead the quarterback to the end zone. We put our big lineman John Williams out there in the Agap and that made him slide inside. When he did that, we had that one inch we needed to make the tackle.” Alex Tran opened the scoring for

the Raiders when he broke free from 55-yards out with 8 minutes, 19 seconds left to play in the opening quarter to give Bolingbrook the 7-0 lead. There was no score again until Joseph Balas hit a 35-yard field goal to extend the Bolingbrook lead to 10-0 with 3:47 left in the third quarter. Oswego got on the board in the closing minute of the third quarter on a Hugunin run to cut the lead 107. The Panthers took the 14-10 lead with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter, then five minutes later King scored his first touchdown of the game out of the wildcat formation from 17-yards away. Oswego moved the ball in the final seconds and sent the game into overtime with a 28-yard field goal. In the first OT, quarterback Devyn Suggs hit tight end Trevor Borland in the back of the end zone. “This took heart,” King said. “Nobody ever gave up and I am really happy with my team. I hate the cold, but I love (that we get to practice another week).” That game will be at Bolingbrook as the No. 21 seed Raiders host No. 4 Warren. “It has been since 2014 the last time we were in the quarterfinals. We went through some things that people don’t realize – we’ve been through eight offensive coordinators, seven defensive coordinators in the last six years,” Ivlow said. “We have been through some changes and now we are starting to get some stability and you see it. Hopefully, we are back on the rise.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL Lewis’ men’s basketball team held a one-point lead at halftime but struggled to score in the second half of its 63-54 loss to Michigan Tech at the Harry Statham Sports Center on Sunday afternoon in Lebanon, Ill. The Flyers fall to 0-2 while the Huskies improve to 2-0. Lewis fell behind early before going on a 12-1 run over a span of 3:20 to take its biggest lead of the game at 24-15. Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) had six points in the run while Anthony D’Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame), Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) and Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) each added two points. Michigan Tech cut the deficit to three on back-to-back three-pointers from Kyle Monroe near the midway point of the first half. Lewis extended its lead back to eight thanks to a 7-2 run. Reinhart hit his third three of the half while D’Avanzo added four points in the run. The Huskies closed the half on a 10-3 run to cut the Flyer lead to 34-33 at the half. Lewis shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the opening half and was 6-of-12 from downtown and 2-for-2 at the foul line. It outrebounded MTU 1714 but turned the ball over six times. Reinhart and D’Avanzo had nine points apiece to lead the Flyers while Bell added seven and Pischke had six. Monroe led all scorers with 20 points in the half on 7-of-13 shooting and was 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Tech shot 39 percent (11-for-28) as a team and was 6-of-15 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. Both sides struggled to score in the first eight minutes of the second and the game was tied at 39 after a layup by D’Avanzo with 12:26 left. The Huskies took the lead for good with five straight points and never let Lewis get closer than three points the rest of the contest. Michigan Tech pulled away thanks to a 12-3 run in a span of 3:12 to take a 58-46 lead. The Flyers cut the lead to 58-52 with 1:22 to play on a pair of free throws by Pischke but the Huskies sealed the game at the line hitting five of its last seven attempts at the foul line. D’Avanzo and Pischke were the lone Lewis players to reach double figures in scoring as D’Avanzo had 18 and Pischke finished with 10. The Flyers were held to just 23 percent

shooting in the second half (7-for-31) and went 1-of-13 from downtown. Lewis’ defense did a better job on Monroe in the second half limiting him to just three points but Tech had three players in double figures as Dawson Bilski and Owen White added 14 and 13 points respectively. The Huskies shot 35 percent (10-for29) in the second half, were 4-of-16 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line. Drury opened the door with a service error and then Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) served the next seven points in the run. Lewis’ defense forced three Panther attack errors in the run which included a double block from Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) to set up match point. Preuss finished it off with her second ace of the run to end the match. The Flyers won the opening set 2518 using an 8-4 run to extend a 13-10 lead to 21-14. Drury got within 21-17 but Lewis closed the set out scoring four of the final five points. Preuss had five kills in the frame while Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) added three. The Flyers hit .167 in the stanza while holding the Panthers to .000 attack percentage. The second set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes with Drury coming out on top 25-23. Lewis held a 2322 lead but the Panthers scored the final three points to take the frame and even the match at set apiece. Lewis led by as many as 11 in the middle set but Drury went on an 8-3 run to cut the Flyer lead to 23-17 and force a Flyer timeout. Lewis finished the set off scoring two of the final three points. Drury hit .278 in the frame while holding the Flyers to a negative .045 hitting percentage.

I’ve gotten out of debt before following your plan, but I always seem to fall right back in. I find myself spending more than I mean to whenever I go out shopping or running errands. I’m tired of all this, and I want to stop busting my budget and get control of my money once and for all. Do you have any advice? A. Years ago, when I lost everything financially, there were two or three extremely strong emotions that spurred me toward change. Probably the biggest emotion was fear. I was scared to death I’d be broke for the rest of my life and not be able to take care of my family. Don’t misunderstand me, though. I don’t think you should ever live your life in fear. But a reasonable, healthy level of fear where some things are concerned can be a fantastic motivator. Another emotion was disgust. I realized the way I had been living and handling money was stupid. So, I made a proactive, conscious decision that I was going to change, and things were going to be different. The third emotion was contentment. You know, advertisers try to make us believe our lives will be better, and we’ll be happier, if we just go out and buy their stuff. I can tell you from personal experience when this idea is crammed down your throat every day, it can warp your perception of contentment and happiness. Lots of stuff does not equal lots of happiness. If you’ve tried several times and are still falling back into the same old trap, maybe you should approach your situation in a practical, day-today way. Stop going places where you’re tempted to spend money on silly things. When you go out running errands and shopping, make a list of only the bare necessities, and take along just enough cash to pay for them. Spending money on a bunch of stuff you don’t need and probably don’t even really want isn’t going to bring you contentment. It’s just going to bust your budget, and put you in a financial hole that will, sooner or later, become very difficult • if not impossible – to dig your way out of!
