Village spends $1.3M to replace trees Trees to replace those lost to emerald ash borer

In its continued fight against an invasive beetle that is changing

the landscape of many communities, the village of Bolingbrook is working to restore nature but with a hefty price tag.

Trying to keep the devastation of trees by the Emerald Ash Borer at bay, the village has been battling the EAB for the past few years, causing the removal of thousands of trees.

The village has at least 30,000 Emerald Ash trees, 20,000 of which are on village property.

In an ongoing battle with the invasive beetle, Bolingbrook has

spent nearly $500,000, removing and treating viable trees and is now embarking on a program to replace infested trees.

The village board recently approved a fall replanting program for trees that were removed because of the EAB infestation. According to village documents, in order to have 3,250 trees planted this fall, four local landscapers were used at a cost of more than $1.3 million.

American Landscape replanted 1,000 tree at a cost of $385,000; J.

Hassert Landscaping replaced 500 trees at $242,500; Sebert Landscaping planted 1,500 trees at $592,500; and Home Landscape planted 250 trees at $125,000.

The size of the trees varied from 2.5 to 4 inches in diameter based on species. To date, 9,200 Ash trees have been removed and 3,600 have been replanted.

In 2015, Bolingbrook treated 6,000 trees at $75 each, and earmarked several hundred thousand for the possible removal or treatment of hundreds more.

Bolingbrook, Romeoville organizations plan Veterans Day programs

Veterans, in their call to duty, live by service to others and for many that doesn’t stop once they are home. A federal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, Veterans Day, is about remembering and honoring those who fought in any conflict. This Friday, local organizations will host a variety of ceremonies to honor those individuals but it doesn’t stop there---what began as a dream in 2009 to help provide a Thanksgiving meal to a few veterans who would likely go without has grown to a Veterans’ Food Drive.

Spearheaded by the non-profit group, Caring Patriots, a food drive will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Nov. 18 and 19 at the former Dominick’s store at 135th Street and Weber Road, Romeoville. Organizers say the need continues to grow and is now partnering with businesses, clubs, schools and churches to collect non-perishable food items that are then used to help assemble and provide approximately six to eight grocery bags per Veteran and their families. Volunteers are welcome to help collect non-perishable food/ monetary donations.

It is also about the continued support of veterans throughout the year, believes Commander of the American Legion Post 52, Virgil Oikion.

As the American Legion Chaplain of Illinois, Oikion with a group of fellow veterans, work to ensure every fallen veteran has a proper ceremony at Abraham National Ceremony.

formed for homeless veterans who remain unknown,sometimes for years, with prayers, a full 21-rifle salute, name recognition and an undue respect for those that served their country.

“It’s important to recognize veterans because it’s a way to honor them,” said Oikion. “And It doesn’t matter who they are or where they are from; it is just a matter of helping someone when they need it.”

The American Legion strives to help veterans with various projects with scholarship programs to area teens, support to local veterans through monetary donations and gifts and help with housing and social services. Legion members spend time with local veterans visiting nearby retirement homes and also work to raise funds through various raffles and fundraisers throughout the year.

He said a quote he appreciates sums it up for him, “A soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him,” adamant in his support of veterans and any in need of help.

According to History.com, Veterans Day began to recognize that on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.”

Community organization receives donation Emerging Life Solutions donates more than $10K to Heart Haven Outreach

In an effort to keep its work to help homeless youth alive despite its unforeseen closing, Emerging Life Solutions recently donated more than $10,000 to a fellow community group, Heart Haven Outreach (H2O), a non-for-profit, organization dedicated to helping the youth of the Bolingbrook/ Romeoville area.

The non-profit organization, Emerging Life Solutions, ran by Living Water Community Church Pastor Chrystal Hansen, had to close as she was moving out of the area. It was decided by the board, that all remaining funds be donated to H2O programs.

“This donation is huge for Heart Haven Outreach. It was an

answer to prayer, honestly,” said Ryan Lawrence, executive director of H2o. “It is perfect timing as we are in a growing stage at H2O. Chrystal Hansen has been a really great friend and supporter to H2O for many years. Her heart for students really align with ours at H2O and we have been blessed by so much of what she has done in the community for the youth. We are going to miss her alot and are really sorry to have her go. This donation is encouragement to us as it shows what we are doing is important and matters to her and the board of Emerging Life Solutions.”

Lawrence said the donation will fund its current 10 weekly programs offered for free to seventh to 12th graders in the Valley View School District. H20 offers free weekly tutoring, open topic support groups, recreational activi-

“This money will help us continue to give this needed support

at no cost to the families,” said Lawrence. “These life transformational programs have made a huge difference in the community and in the schools we work with.

We rely on individual and local business support to be able to offer this.”

He explains participation is growing each year with continued requests for middle school programming. This donation will allow H20 to offer such programs and allow for additional support in those grade levels soon.

“We have been around since 2005 with programs for high school students but in 2016 we started running some support group programs in the middle schools for 8th grade students.

We found it to be very successful and expanded to 7th graders this new school year. We would love to be able to offer all of our different programs to this age group,” said Lawrence.

Forest Preserve District turns 90 District has grown from 143 acres to almost 22,000 acres

BY CINDY CAIN FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF WILL COUNTY In 1926, Calvin Coolidge was president, prohibition was in force, Babe Ruth was slugging home runs for the Yankees and Will County was in transition.

Wolves still roamed free in some areas of the county 90 years ago, but development was taking off and a movement was underway to build a “super-highway system” linking Will County to Cook County and beyond.

In Joliet, community leaders were working hard to raise funds to build the city’s first YMCA, and excitement was growing for the opening of the Rialto Square Theatre on Chicago Street. The glitzy showplace was set to open May 24, 1926, and the Joliet Evening Herald-News had all of the festive

details in its May 23, 1926, edition.

Another story in that edition of the paper announced a community-based quest to create a countywide forest preserve district. This movement to save the county’s “timber tracts” was spearheaded by the Joliet Rotary, and it was led by Dr. W. Henry Wilson, chairman of the Rotary’s Forest Preserve Committee. Wilson, a nationally known pathologist who worked at Silver Cross Hospital, stressed the benefits of preserved open space.

“It is accessible to the public, for pleasure and recreation, and is beautifying to the county,” he said at the time.

Rotary members said they feared the county’s open spaces would go the way of the buffalo without a forest preserve district.

required to get a forest preserve referendum on the Nov. 2, 1926, ballot. The referendum passed by almost a 2 to 1 margin, with 16,611 people voting in favor of the district and 8,774 voting against the

measure.

“Because of the foresight of Dr. Wilson, his fellow Rotary members and the thousands of voters who approved the initial referendum, the lives of Will County resi-

dents have been greatly enriched, and they will be for generations to come,” said Ralph Schultz, the forest preserve district’s chief operating officer. “I hope that we can continue to enhance their vision as we seek to protect, restore and interpret nature and to make our great open spaces accessible and enjoyable for the residents of Will County.”

In the 90 years since its creation, the Will County Forest Preserve District has grown from 143 acres in 1930 to almost 22,000 acres owned, leased or managed today.

All of this preservation came at a time when the county’s population mushroomed from 110,732 in 1920 to around 700,000 current residents.

Efforts by Wilson, his Rotary colleagues and the voters of Will County have made a difference in the county’s quality of life for all species. They stepped in as development was ramping up in Will County and they provided a pathway to preservation.

Road to victory in WWII For Veterans Day, remembering one soldier’s dangerous job of carrying vital supplies

BY MARK DEPUE ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY, DIRECTOR OF ORAL HISTORY Frank Merkley is a World War II veteran who never fired his weapon in anger, but his contributions to America’s war effort were every bit as important as those of soldiers in the thick of combat. Merkley, now 96 and living in Princeton, Ill., spent his war driving trucks.

It was a rare case in which the army found the perfect job based on Frank’s peacetime experiences.

He had left school when he was 13 to help support the family, and had driven trucks since he was 16, working for his brother.

Merkley was drafted in November 1942, and was shipped to Persia in early 1943. Once there, he drove his truck along a tenuous road deep into modern-day Iran, the first leg of a long trip toward the Soviet frontier.

(America, the Arsenal of Democracy, sent more than four million tons of supplies to Russia through Persia during the war.)

Then in January 1945, Frank’s unit, the 3949th Quartermaster Truck Company, was transferred to the China-Burma-India theater of operations.

His job? To drive over the infamous “hump” in the mountains of Burma to deliver supplies to China.

During his first trip on the treach-

erous Ledo Road, Frank’s truck got a flat tire. Because of that, he left the assembly area several hours after the rest of his convoy. “I don’t know how I’m here today, except the Lord saved me—twice in one day,” Merkley said 71 years later.

“I was going along through that one road, that mountain there, and I come over way at the top and come around a big curve … All of a sudden the truck stopped. … The Lord stopped it. Believe me or not, the Lord stopped that truck.” A Chinese guard, whose job was to alert trucks of the impending danger, then came racing out to the road to guide Merkley around a bridge that was rotting away.

Had Frank not stopped, the truck would have plunged into a deep ravine, taking him along with it.

Merkley was still on the road late that night trying to catch up with his convoy. Because of the fear of snipers, he was forbidden to use his headlights, and when it started to rain, the night turned pitch black.

“I couldn’t see a thing out the windshield, not one thing,” he said.

“Couldn’t even see the dash. … I had my foot out on the front wheel fender, and I was trying to keep that front wheel along the edge of that mountain.”

On his left, the mountain shot up toward the sky. On his right was a sheer cliff. It was certain death to any driver who missed a curve on a dirt

road that was barely wide enough to accommodate the big American trucks.

Recalling that night during his oral history interview, Frank continued his story, his voice filled with emotion. “All of a sudden a big bolt of lightning come … and it lit that road up just like day. And it put daggers in – zing, zing, zing, zing, zing, zing – like that all the way up to a big sharp curve.”

Guided by that brief glimpse of the danger ahead, Frank pushed forward into the dark. “And I hit that curve right on the nose,” he said.

Frank has no doubt that God had intervened to save his life that night.

“I can’t hardly believe myself the way He lit that road up for me so I could see. … He lit that road up just like it was day time out there – just bright lightning.”

As far as Frank is concerned, God wasn’t quite done with him yet. On the first leg of his journey back to the states, a flight from China to Calcutta, he survived a plane crash. He then boarded a Liberty ship, which sailed into a three-day typhoon in the South China Sea. Needless to say, he was happy to get back to America. Once home in Princeton, he soon got back to work, eventually starting a pest control business and finally retiring at 90 after a lifetime of work.

Nine-year-old from Bolingbrook has a knack for racing cars

In a way, Michael Mucha is a lot like many other boys his age.

He enjoys playing baseball, skateboarding and anything else that may catch the interest of a 9-year-old in the fourth grade.

Then there are the ways Michael is far different than his classmates.

None of them have their own web page, their own Twitter handle and spend several weekends a year driving around a track at 70 miles per hour.

Yes – driving.

Despite only being nine years old, Michael is the driver of the No. 75 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Cup -or Mini Cup – car in the Central States Region Series.

Super Cup Cars look the same as a stock car one would see in NASCAR races, only half the size.

The cars are equipped with full tube chassis, rack and pinion steering, upper and lower control arms and fully adjustable coil over shocks both front and rear. The driver is protected with a full cage and a five point safety harness, making the cars one of the safest forms of racing available.

“It is real racing in half scale.

The speeds are up there, to,” said his dad, Randy, who serves as chief mechanic, spotter, so-

If they go slow, it takes time to wind them back up because they are not shifting. They run whatever gear is in it for the track.”

While the cars are half scale versions of professional stock cars, they are not only driven by half scale versions of the drivers.

At nine years old, Michael is the youngest in the series, but the oldest is age 55, with all age ranges in between.

While drivers are allowed to start at age eight, this is Michael’s first year behind the wheel after spending a few years as a fan.

“We have been going for the last few years to watch – mostly at Grundy County because it’s close to home,” Randy said.

“Even before we went, he has loved cars since he has played with Matchbox. Most of the tracks open the pits to the fans after the races and that was when we first realized that they existed and what they were.”

Being their first year as a race team, Randy and Michael have had to rely on other drivers for advice and guidance along the way.

Making its final appearance on its home field in 2016, Midwest League member USF fell to 4-6.

Marian scored the only points of the first quarter on the first of three touchdown passes on the day from Ethan Darter to Krishawn Hogan, a 20-yard strike late in the period. The duo hooked up again, this time from 27 yards out early in the second quarter, before Robert Gibson’s 1-yard plunge at the 4:31 mark give the Knights a 21-0 halftime advantage.

Jakhari Gore scored the first of Marian’s five third-quarter touchdowns on an 11-yard run in the opening minute of the second half.

After Hogan scored on a 3-yard burst out of the wildcat formation, USF got on the board when junior Don Butkus (Dyer, Ind./ Mount Carmel) found sophomore Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./ Peoria) in the end zone from 3 yards away. With the reception, Ruffin became the fourth player in USF history to catch 10 touchdown passes in a single season.

Marian added two more TDs in the last four minutes of the third stanza on a 64-yard pass from Darter to Trey White and a 12-yard strike from Darter to Hogan.

Darter threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game early in

the fourth quarter when he connected with Kameron Utter for a 47-yard TD. A Charles Salary 49-yard dash midway through the final stanza capped the scoring for the Knights. USF scored the game’s final points when sophomore Lamarr Hooper (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) rushed in from 2 yards out for his first career touchdown.

Darter was 23-of-34 for 378 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.

He connected with Hogan on nine occasions for 152 yards and three scores. Gore (83 yards), Salary (73) and Gibson (69) combined for 225 yards on 24 carries, good for a 9.4-yard average per run. Butkus completed 11 of 27 attempts for 146 yards with a TD and two interceptions. USF turned the ball over a season-high five times.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Senior Jordan Giddings (Rock Falls, Ill./ Rock Falls) led five Saints in double figures with a game-high 21 points as the No. 5-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team tipped off its 2016-17 campaign with an 81-59 win over host Bethel (Ind.) College Tuesday night.

The victory marked USF’s second straight opening-night win.

Bethel fell to 0-3 on the season.

USF did not trail at any point in the contest. Leading 8-6 midway through the opening quarter, the Saints closed out the period with a 14-2 run to build a 22-8 lead. USF pushed its advantage to 42-21 at halftime and 66-38 after three quarters.

Giddings was 8-of-13 from the field, including a 4-for-6 clip from 3-point range. Senior Charnelle Reed (Chicago Heights, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) handed out eight assists to go along with 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Angelica Osusky (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) added 11 points, while junior Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) and freshman Kaitlin Aylward (Elmwood Park, Ill./ Trinity) each tallied 10.

USF shot 48 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the 3-point arc. The Saints converted 18 Bethel turnovers into 24 points, while allowing the Pilots only nine points on 12 turnovers. Kamala Glenn paced Bethel with 14 points.

The Saints return to action with exhibition games at DePaul University on Friday evening and at Florida State University on Sunday afternoon before returning home to entertain Ave Maria University in its 2016-17 debut at the Sullivan Center on Nov. 11.

for next season, however, when they signed up Michael only had to have a one year commitment “Our deal with him for everything – whether it was racing or baseball or gymnastics or skateboard lessons or swimming or any of the different things we have signed him up for, the deal has always been that he would follow through for the length of whatever we committed to,”

Randy said. “We don’t quit.”

So, while Michael plans to continue his racing career at least one more year, he is does not have his sights set on a seat in a NASCAR just yet – for now he simply races because “it’s fun.”

His dad, however, sees a life impact in the sport, no matter how long Michael stays in the seat.

“For most people, it is an exciting thing to get your license and finally be able to drive a car,” Randy said. “For him, it will just be, ‘OK, I finally have the thing in my wallet but I have been driving for years.’ That is one of the good things, too, of course we will do whatever number of hours the law says, but this will only make him a better driver on the road.”

DEAR DAVE, I work for a small company that just won a cruise trip for all the employees. The prize covers just the cruise tickets, and we have to pay for everything else. The problem is that my wife and I currently have more than $50,000 in debt, not counting our home, and about $10,000 of that is in collections. We’re trying to fix our finances and start saving money, but we just don’t feel like we should take a trip right now. How do I tell my boss?

RICKY DEAR RICKY, First, let me say how proud I am of you and your wife. Most people would be really irresponsible in a position like this and simply borrow more money to take the trip.

The fact that you’re behaving like mature adults tells me you’re on your way to getting out of debt and solving your financial problems.

I’ve got to wonder, is there a lot of pressure from your company to go on this trip? I understand the benefits of team building and socializing with colleagues, but when you have no savings and are that deep in debt — and a chunk of that includes some in collections — it’s no lie to say you can’t afford to go.

A decent company will understand.

Just sit down with your boss or owner, and explain why you can’t make it happen right now. You don’t have to unload all the details, but let them know that you can’t do something like this in good conscience when you’re trying to get your finances under control and already owe a lot of money.

That’s one heck of a temptation you’re standing up to, Ricky. I love that you and your wife are on the same page and have made the decision to take control of your finances together!

I teach people how to stay out of debt and build wealth. And there’s always one thing I remind folks of when it comes to buying anything — if you can’t afford to pay cash for the whole thing, then you can’t afford it. The only thing I back off on is when it comes to buying a house.

I love shiny things that go fast, and so do a lot of people who work here at my office. Right now, there are about six or seven motorcycles sitting in our parking lot, and they’re owned by folks who make good money. And the bikes sitting out there probably range in value from about $1,000 to $10,000. But you know what? Whoever rode in on the $1,000 bike had just as much fun as the one who owns the $10,000 bike.

VVSD Robotics Academy receives grant from Citgo Robotics Academy meets once a week after school at both Martinez and Humphrey Several dozen Valley View School District 365U students are learning to design, build and program robots this semester thanks to an Education Partner Grant from Citgo’s Lemont refinery.

VVSD Robotics Academy, conducted by Aurora-based Chasewood Learning, is a free hands-on experience structured to help students learn about and use engineering concepts in fun, engaging and dynamic ways.

“One of our goals is to get students to realize the opportunities STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) careers can bring

to them,” said VVSD 6-12 Math Coordinator Adriene Potilechio said.

“We have so many great STEM activities now. Robotics Academy is one more avenue to get students interested.”

Utilizing LEGO bricks, motors, sensors and much more, students learn about machines that move by building such things as race cars, cranes, and fishing poles. It promotes creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and coping with success and failure.

Robotics Academy meets once a week after school at both Martinez and Humphrey middle schools.

Plans call for the Academy to move to Brooks, Jane Addams and Lukancic during the second semester.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity Citgo has provided for us,” Potilechio said. “Hopefully this is the start of a great STEM partnership.”

Voting is currently underway on the website to select the winning design. High school students from the 12 counties served by the Illinois Tollway submitted original works of art utilizing the theme “Enhancing Drivers Experience Via Innovation and Technology.”

Hands-on experiment helps Oak

View 4th graders learn about cells As part of their science unit on plant and animal cells, Jodi Olsen’s 4th graders at Oak View Elementary School conducted a recent experiment in an attempt to extract DNA from bananas and strawberries.

Lainna Callentine of SciExperience, a frequent visitor to Oak View and a variety of other schools throughout the Chicago area, led them through a series of steps that in many cases produced strands of DNA in small plastic tubes.

“This is great,” Olsen said. “They can understand where plant and animal cells come from.”

Olsen’s class has been studying cells for almost two weeks. They will continue their exploration for another week or two, including another hands-on experiment in which they will try to extract their own DNA.
