Alicia Guerrero, of Romeoville, knows the pain of losing a child to violence.

So, when the time came to recognize the lives lost to domestic violence as part of Will County Take Back the Night and its 20th anniversary vigil and march against violence, she said she needed to be there.

“I came out for my daughter,” she said. “Her and I were attacked in 2014 by someone she met on Facebook. He was a guy and he became obsessed with her, and then he came to my home and shot us.

She was killed, but I survived. I’m here for her.”

Will County Take Back the Night held its 20th annual vigil and march against domestic violence last weekend at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Joliet.

Stacey Dillard, co-chairperson for Will County Take Back the Night, said the organization’s efforts are geared toward making a difference in the lives of others.

She said the goal is “to bring awareness and hopefully that we don’t have to add a new name to the list of women who lost their lives to violence.”

during her junior of college when she went walking on campus by herself at 3 a.m. Johnson said that walk wasn’t the night of her rape as many might assume, but it’s a very telling account that depicts the emotions she experienced in the aftermath of that terrible event.

Noting that she did what every adult told her as child not to do, Johnson said she did what every adult, every college, every pam-

phlet, every flier tells every female what not to do to avoid sexual assault.

“It was three months after I was sexually assaulted in my own home by my roommate at Northern Illinois University,” she said. “I will never forget this certain night, just like I will never forget the night of my assault. That night, I was sick of the insomnia, I was sick of feeling uncomfortable, unsafe and fear in

my own home.”

That night, Johnson knew she could never live in her home any longer.

Johnson said she remembers walking past the commons on campus, sitting on the stairs and laying back in the grass.

“I looked up in the sky,” she said.

“I remember searching so hard, just to see the stars. I wished I was dead. I wanted to be in those stars. I wanted to be far, far away from this place.”

Johnson said the pain that she felt is no longer consuming her to the extent it had initially.

“Today, I’m an educator, I’m a speaker, I’m an activist, I’m a storyteller and above all else, I’m a survivor,” she said. “I’ve shared my stories from L.A. to New York City, from Portland to Austin, from Vegas to Chicago and back and our small town communities.”

Guerrero said she believes the messages of the keynote speaker to be true, and is relieved to know that her pain will eventually subside, as did Johnson’s.

“Oh, it was perfect,” she said.

“I mean it really helped me to feel that I’m going to be OK one day.”

Guerrero said recognizing domestic violence awareness month means a lot to her.

“It means everything to me not only because of my daughter but because of myself as well,” she said.

“It shows me that I’m not the only one, and there are so many other people that are being hurt everyday. Hopefully, one day it will all stop.”

Dillard said the turnout for Will County Take Back the Night has increased in size year after year, and is playing a significant role in bringing visibility to matters concerning domestic abuse within the county. “[I] can’t say a number, but you see in just the number of people— the sheer number of people that attend the walk—each year, we have to get a bigger venue,” she said.

On average, Will County Take Back the Night raises between $7,000 and $8,000 each year.

Dillard said more money was raised as part of the organization’s 20th annual event than in years past. Those funds will be divided between five organizations that help victims of domestic violence, in addition to a scholarship program.

A donation site has been created for families who were devastated by a gas explosion last week that leveled two townhomes in Romeoville’s Wespark Subdivision.

The American Red Cross and the village of Romeoville are assisting families that were left displaced by the Oct. 11 gas explosion in a townhome complex on Wespark Boulevard and Strawflower Court.

The American Red Cross helped 25 people, two of them children, with assistance for immediate needs, including finding them a place to stay, food and other relief items hours after the explosion.

Members of the mental health services team also assisted fami-

lies with emotional support to help them cope with the traumatic event.

“We continue to work closely with our government and community partners, including Romeoville Mayor John Noak and United Way of Will County, to [ensure] all those affected receive the support, services and resources they need to cope and recover,” said Patricia Kemp, communications manager for the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois.

Two Nicor employees working on a gas main at the time were injured. No one was home at the time of the explosion. While no residents were injured, some are missing pets who may have wandered off during the evacuation.

Earlier in the day, a neighbor reported smelling a heavy gas leak

at about 5:30 p.m. and decided to leave the area.

Romeoville and Lockport Township fire protection districts evacuated the area and were on scene all evening to maintain the site.

Romeoville Emergency Management Agency’s Mike Littrell said officials are continuing their investigation.

To provide additional assistance to those families affected, the village of Romeoville has set up a site to help those residents who were affected by the incident rebuild their lives and pay for necessary expenses.

In addition, the Gelsosomo’s Pizzeria and Pub in Lemont recently hosted a “Pack The Place” event, where 40 percent of all dine-in proceeds were donated to the families.

Nicor Gas released a statement thanking the community for its support of the company’s two workers who were injured and saying that the company is work-

ing to ensure the impacted families have the resources they need.

“We continue to assist local authorities with the ongoing investigation, and we will be reviewing the findings of the incident once they are available,” Nicor Gas President Melvin Williams said in a statement. “Safety is our highest priority, the safety of our customers and the communities in which we live and work.”

The Red Cross does not raise funds for specific disaster or fire responses, but people can join the Red Cross effort to save lives, reduce injuries and cut down on losses from home fires by making a financial donation to the Home Fire Campaign by visiting www. redcross.org, calling 1-800 REDCROSS or texting FIRE to 90999.

Celebrating its first location in Will County, Blain’s Farm & Fleet opened the doors to its newest Romeoville store earlier this month to a crowd of interested shoppers.

The parking lot was filled with cars, and the store was packed with customers the weekend after its Oct. 13 grand opening, with many first-time shoppers of the store curious to view its offerings.

“We are so excited that Farm and Fleet chose Romeoville,” Mayor John Noak said. “The response from residents about the opening has been overwhelming and just in time for holiday shopping.”

Construction of the 122,000-square-foot building, lo-

cated at 451 S. Weber Road, began in April. It is the company’s 38th store and its first in Will County.

Nearly 30 acres of land was dedicated to new retail space at the southeast corner of Airport and Weber roads, with the addition of the new Blain’s Farm and Fleet and seven additional retail outlots.

The Romeoville Village Board approved a development plan in January for additional retail that will be named and approved at a later date in that same complex.

The Romeoville store employs more than 100 associates and incorporates a new design standard with many green aspects, making this model the first of its kind for Blain’s Farm & Fleet.

While the store officially opened Oct. 13, grand opening events will occur Oct. 20 through Oct. 22. The store boasts great deals, activities,

He left RHS to become the Deputy Instructor for the much larger Noble Network of Charter Schools JROTC program in Chicago.

“I’m dedicated to young people and their future. They are our real treasure,” said Placey who was pursuing new opportunities when the RHS position opened. “I enjoy helping them discover what they’re capable of.”

Couturier joined the Marine infantry when he was 17 and has served throughout the world including three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan along with

many other billets/units. He has worked with several JROTC programs mostly in California.

“I was looking for an assignment in the Midwest,” the former Grand Rapids-area resident said.

“I like the opportunities that this location presents and believe in the MCJROTC program.”

Those opportunities, both instructors agree, involve teaching leadership as well as personal and professional development.

“Our focus is on the Cadets,” Couturier said. “It’s all about the kids. It’s not about getting trophies. It’s not about how many competitions we participate in.

It’s about leadership and personal and professional development of our younger generation.”

“We have a responsibility to mentor these young men and women,” Placey added. “It’s about introducing them to the Marine culture and attitude that nothing is impossible. We want them to learn that everybody has talents and everybody can contribute.”

The goal is to re-build a pro-

Line between fate & choice there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition

BY JAsoN FLorIN bugle columniSt A basic part of my morning routine involves starting the coffeemaker and then choosing the day’s coffee mug. The cabinet displays a great variety of sizes, shapes and colors to pick from.

As I scan my options on this particular fall morning, I notice a red and blue emblem peeking through from the back row. I pull it forward and see it’s a Chicago Cubs logo, and this day just happens to be the opening game of the playoffs.

Even though I haven’t used this mug in months, during which time the team has won the most games in baseball on their way to a division title, today it feels like they cannot possibly win unless I choose their mug. I can almost feel the stars aligning as fate draws me to select the cup that will assure the team a victory. So, I succumb to the delusion.

In a classic episode of the TV show “The Office,” boss Michael Scott explains that he is not super-stitious, but he is a little “stitious.” Even if we are rational and level headed in most of our daily encounters, there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition. We cross our fingers for luck, avoid walking under a ladder or even pump a little extra gas to make sure the last three numbers don’t read 6-6-6.

BY JAsoN FloRiN The concept of superstition is that we believe we can control events that are really outside of our control. These magical beliefs become stronger if the outcome happens to go our way. When the Cubs won their game the night I used that coffee mug, I made sure it was the only thing I drank out of for the rest of the weekend.

On the one hand, this kind of behavior is all in good fun – a harmless way of trying to be part of something bigger.

On the other hand, an over-reliance on superstition can turn against us. Instead of focusing on choices that can have a meaningful impact in our lives, we waste energy on what we cannot control.

As hard as we might try, we can’t change what others do and think, let alone how the universe will unfold.

The irony of superstition is that our misguided effort at greater control only leads us to have less control in our lives.

Numerous research studies suggest that when we believe that we steer our own lives – known as an internal locus of control – we feel better, perform better and experience greater success. We also

take responsibility for our actions, rather than chalking it up to fate or bad luck.

The opposite occurs when we see our lives as a rudderless ship, tossed whichever way the wind and currents decide.

This lack of power – known as an external locus of control – is associated with higher rates of depression, lack of selfesteem and lower life satisfaction.

These beliefs also lead to stepping back from important life situations, since it feels as if we have no influence over the outcome. By recognizing that we have choices to make, as well as how important those choices are, we can create a meaningful life. Yet when it comes to the areas we cannot change, it’s equally important to accept that we don’t have total control.

So you can keep the quirky routines that provide a small sense of connectedness, just as long as you don’t take them too seriously. After all, the best way to avoid tempting fate is to take control of it.

P.S. If the Cubs don’t win it all this year, you can’t blame me – I’m still using the same mug.

McGuire: Stateville decision made without input of workers On Oct. 7, the Rauner administration announced plans to close the F House at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, released a statement last week expressing dismay with the governor’s decision.

“We learned this morning in a Chicago Sun-Times op-ed that Gov. Rauner plans to close F House, the roundhouse at Stateville,” McGuire’s statement read. “Stateville is a maximum-security prison, and F House is where maximum-security offend-

ers who pose threats to staff and other offenders are housed.

“I later learned that the governor plans to move all the offenders in F House — of whom there are 347 today — to other buildings at Stateville and to other maximum-security state prisons, of which there are only two, Pontiac and Menard.

The governor wishes to do this in six weeks’ time.

“Public safety and the safety of prison employees must be our highest priorities. Yet the governor made the decision to close F House and

set this aggressive timeline without talking to Stateville’s front-line workers, the members of AFSCME Local 1866. These are the men and women who walk the cell blocks, encounter offenders face to face, know best the conditions of the facility, and risk their lives to keep us safe.

“I urge Gov. Rauner to immediately seek Local 1866’s input before proceeding. We need safe communities and safe prisons. To move abruptly and unilaterally could risk both.”

The Romeoville Spartans (35) traveled to Plainfield Central (0-8) Friday night looking to extend its winning streak to three in a row and keep the Wildcats in the winless column for another week.

It took only 22 seconds for the Spartans to get on the board with a Jordan Nettles 59-yard rushing score at the 11:38 mark of the first quarter and by half the game was out of reach as Romeoville jumped out to a 38-0 lead.

Led by Nettles – the Northern Illinois University-bound senior tailback - the Spartans finished off Central 52-14 in convincing fashion.

Nettles carried the ball 28 times for 284 yards and four touchdowns.

The 284 yards broke the single game rushing record for Romeoville which had stood at 274 yards prior to his night in

“It’s a great one-two punch with Tyree and myself in the backfield,” Nettles said. “We call ourselves thunder and lightning but our offensive line works hard and improves every week, we all do, which is why we got the victory tonight.”

Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson was happy with his player’s performance.

“Offensively we are starting to figure things out and our defensive is doing a heck of a job,” he said. “All the way down the line we are thin but each one of these kids is playing hard and I give credit to my coaching staff for that.

Lewis University junior forward Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) recorded his first career hat trick as the Flyer men’s soccer team collected the 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Truman State University at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 16) afternoon.

It is the first Flyer hat trick in two seasons as George Thomson scored three in a 3-1 victory over Alderson Broaddus on September 6, 2014. The Germany native scored in the 21st minute, 65th minute and 85th minute to help the Flyers to victory.

With the win, Lewis improves to 4-10 on the campaign and 3-9 in GLVC action, while the visiting Bulldogs drop to 5-6-3 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play.

Financially speaking, she has about $150,000 in Certificates of Deposit, money market accounts and savings bonds. Is there a better place she can invest her money?

ANoNYMoUs deAr ANoNYMoUs, Certainly there are other investment vehicles that will make much more money than CDs, money markets and savings bonds.

However, at your mom’s age people aren’t generally investing for the long haul, unless they’re investing it for their heirs.

If she’s comfortable with her finances, I’d suggest just leaving things alone.

Don’t try to force her into something new. At her age she may still have bad memories of the Great Depression and a negative perception of the stock market.

In a case like that, mutual funds might make her fearful.

I wouldn’t take the chance of robbing a 95-year-old lady of her peace to try and do the “proper” thing with money.

However, if she’s agreeable to the idea of doing a little better with her money, you could start by moving a little into growth stock or balanced

stock mutual funds. But do something like this only if the change won’t upset her and leave her fretting over her money.

But when it comes to what you can reasonably afford, I think it becomes relative to exactly how much debt you have and what kind of income we’re talking about.

If you have $5,000 in debt but you make $150,000 a year, stop worrying, pay off your debt, and save up for a great wedding.

If you make $28,000 a year but you have $30,000 in debt, then you need to have a really minimal wedding.

Anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 would be reasonable in that kind of situation — and even then it’s going to be tight.
