Senior Star at Weber Place makes top 50 list Local retirement community earns spot on first-ever list of its kind

BY RYAN OSTRY Local retirement home, Senior Star at Weber Place, just received the accolade of being ranked number three on Fortune Magazines first-ever list of 50 Best Workplaces for Aging Services.

Elizabeth Bartleman, Assistant Executive Director, who oversees the many operations in the community, said that this nomination was something that didn’t surprise her because of the work atmosphere that she has been apart of since day one.

“I’ve been here at Senior Star for nine years,” Bartleman said.

“The whole reason that I came here was because of the way this place made me feel from the first time I walked into the

community, I feel the way they personally there was something just really special here.”

Locally, Senior Star at Weber Place is one of 14 retirement communities nationwide operated by the Tulsa-based Senior Star, which employs nearly 1,300 people.

In order to qualify for Fortune’s Best Workplaces for Aging Services list, the company first earned certification as a Great Place to Work in June of 2018.

That certification process included a survey open to all Senior Star associates that queried employee engagement.

“It’s just nice to see we are being recognized for the reasons why I chose to come here,” Bartleman said.

According to the Senior Star website, their goal is to be “present and supportive, ready to see, value and hear your family” while also being responsive to residents needs and being an extended part of residents families.

“The stories that our associ-

ates bring in are just wonderful,” Bartleman said. “We have a certain culture and vision here which is a world of difference makers, the driving home point is that we can make a difference in each persons life who we serve and that’s something I love about the Senior Star.”

Bartleman said going off of the culture that the employees hold themselves to, reflect their values as well in how residents are treated and co-exist with each other.

Romeoville offering new way to honor local vets Village Veteran and Service Member Banners cost $45

BY RYAN OSTRY The city of Romeoville is officially offering a new way to honor those who have fought for our every day freedoms in a new and innovative way.

The Romeoville Veteran and Service Member Banner Program is a $45, 24-by-62 inch double-sided vinyl banner that will be displayed on the light poles along Grand Avenue in front of Village Hall.

“All of these banners that have been hung have gone way back to historical references,” said John Noak, Mayor of Romeoville. “We’ve used these banners in the past with special occasions, anniversaries or other ceremonies which we think that people really enjoy seeing them.”

This display however, will only be offered from May through November.

“It will have the basic village logo at the top, the flag and you can also put in a memory,” Noak said. “Family members are also encouraged in the gathering to thank our veterans as well.”

For those families and veterans that want to partake in the

banner activity, orders must be received and paid for in person at Village Hall by January 1 of each year.

Only 40 banners will be hung per year, and at the end of November, the banner will be given to the individuals who purchased them.

“It’s similar to when we remodeled Veterans Memorial Park,” Noak said. “We’ve done a lot of work within the community to really show we are proud of our veterans and this is just another way we can do that.”

Additional banners that families can utilize for home use can be purchased for $45 each.

WTTW Visits Skoff Elementary for Documentary on Play-Based Learning

WTTW, the PBS affiliate in Chicago, paid a visit this week to Skoff Elementary School as part of their research for a documentary on early education play-based learning.

VVSD was recommended for the documentary based on the implementation and success of play-based learning in classrooms

The Romeoville HS Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams were at school at 4 a.m. last Sunday. Why the early gathering? For the fifth year in a row, the Spartan harriers volunteered to work an aide station for the Chicago Marathon. The student-athletes received several compliments about their efforts to assist the competitors as they passed the RHS station near Mile 6.

VVSD had several staff members take part in the Marathon: Mrs. Michelle Wicyk, Romeoville HS Girls’ Cross Country Coach raised over $2000 for Team to End AIDS. Ms. Gabrielle Meyer, Hermansen Elementary Social Worker ran to raise money for Girls on the Run and beat her best time by 22 minutes. Mr. Chris McVey, A Vito Martinez PE Teacher ran for Organization for Autism Research, raising nearly $3000. Also braving the rain were Lukancic Asst.

TRAIL FROM PAGE 2 larger project years in the making that will convert most of the underutilized Normantown Road into a 4.7-mile hiking and biking path that will travel from Wolf’s Crossing Road in Naperville to 135th Street in Plainfield.

“The Normantown Trail provides a safe and easy option to connect communities, forest preserves, parks and regional trails, offering residents another transportation, recreation and fitness alternative,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer.

Much of the Normantown Trail has already been constructed and, in most areas, Normantown Road has been vacated or given up by its municipal owner and trimmed down to a 10-foot wide path. Here is a summary of the trail sections: Vermont Cemetery to 111th Street: All of this 1.5-mile segment is in place, and was built by the Forest Preserve District, the City of Naperville and two developers that are constructing subdivisions east of the road.

Rockwell Lane to 119th Street: This 0.15-mile section will remain as a shared-use road so vehicles can continue to access Rockwell Lane from 119th Street.

119th Street to 135th Street: This 2.2-mile section of the Normantown Trail is being developed by the Village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Park District. From 119th south to the Normantown Equestrian Center, the path will be a shared roadway with vehicles. South of the equestrian center, the trail will once again be reserved for bikers and walkers/runners. Some of this trail segment uses converted sections of Normantown Road, while other portions take advantage of utility corridors leading to 135th Street.

Once all of the pieces are in place, the Normantown Road Trail will link two forest preserves – Vermont Cemetery, located south of Wolf’s Crossing Road, and Wolf Creek Preserve, located south of 111th Street. The path also will connect to the Tallgrass Greenway Trail, the Village of Plainfield’s internal bike trail network, the DuPage River Trail in Will and DuPage counties, and eventually to the Virgil Gilman Trail in Kane County and the Grand Illinois Trail.

Normantown Trail discussions began in the mid-2000s when Naperville officials decided to vacate Normantown Road from Wolf’s Crossing Road to just south of 111th Street. Because this corridor connected the Forest Preserve’s Vermont Cemetery to Wolf Creek Preserve, the Forest Preserve District worked with Naperville and Plainfield to facilitate the trail’s construction.

Attemped abduction cannot be corroborated at this time Deputies remain vigilant regarding possible attemped abduction

On Oct. 12, Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence regarding four elementary age girls who reported to their parents that while walking to Creekside Elementary School a man driving a red vehicle stopped and asked them if they wanted a ride.

Sheriff’s detectives arrived on the scene and spoke with the girls and their parents. The girls stated that the incident occurred near Lakewood Falls Drive and Isle Royal Circle, Plainfield Township. During extensive interviews, the girls were not able to provide any further details of the vehicle, nor any identifying information about the man.

Noak said that with these programs taking place, people have really shown how proud they are of all veterans, and it has shown with their contributions to the cause.

Bloomington’s Davis Mansion home to Lincoln’s strongest advocate EDITOR’S NOTE: The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is sponsored by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. Grand manors make up the skylines of many Illinois communities, but the history encapsulated at the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington holds it above the rest.

Built in 1872 on Bloomington’s then east side, the mansion was home to Judge David Davis and his wife, Sarah.

Davis served as judge of the state’s Eighth Judicial Circuit Court where he met and befriended an Illinois attorney by the name of Abraham Lincoln.

“Davis and Lincoln rode the entire circuit together,” said Jeff Saulsbery, site manager for the mansion. “Davis had to ride the circuit because he was a judge, but Lincoln only did because he was driven to make something of himself.”

Saulsbery said the duo spent plenty of time together, which led to Davis acting as “one of the biggest political operatives” in Lincoln becoming president.

“What Lincoln did for the Circuit and what the Circuit did for him is a large part of Illinois history. His time in Central Illinois is what led to him becoming the 16th president of the U.S. and saving the Union,” said Guy Fraker, retired Bloomington attorney and Lincoln scholar.

At the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860, five candidates vied for the Republican nomination, including Lincoln, who was the least known candidate among the group.

“The judge (Davis) went to Chicago and secured hotel rooms for all the Illinois delegates and convinced them and others to vote for Lincoln,” said Saulsbery.

Davis and his team used other tactics to boost Lincoln’s name at the convention and after the final vote was tallied, Lincoln was named Republican presidential nominee for the general election.

Without Davis’s advocacy, Fraker said Lincoln would not have been named

president.

“A lot of factors got Lincoln nominated, but the biggest factor was he had a friend like Davis who was a very skilled politician in 1860. That’s something we in Bloomington can be very proud of,” said Fraker.

Fraker also touched on a side of Davis and Lincoln’s relationship that he said “isn’t particularly appealing.”

“After Lincoln was elected president, there were two openings on the Supreme Court. All the lawyers who knew Davis told Lincoln to take care of him and give him a seat. Lincoln never responded to any of that and their mutual friends were quite critical of his decision,” said Fraker.

After a long wait, Lincoln finally appointed Davis as associate justice on the Supreme Court in 1862.

After Lincoln died, Davis said in a letter, “Lincoln was a peculiar man; he never asked my advice on any question.

Sometimes I would talk to him and advise him; he would listen.”

Davis so strongly supported Lincoln because of his “incredible integrity and intellectual honesty,” said Fraker.

The David Davis Mansion was built after Lincoln was assassinated but, prior to his presidency, Lincoln visited the Davises at their previous home located on the same grounds in Bloomington.

“The barn on the grounds is original to that first house owned by the Davises and the stable is exactly as it was 150 years ago. So, Lincoln’s horse was stabled here in the barn,” said Saulsbery.

Other outbuildings still standing on the 4-acre lot known as “Clover Lawn” include a wood house, two privies, a foaling shed, a carriage barn and an original flower garden.

Davis commissioned French architect Alfred Piquenard to complete the three-story, yellow brick, 36-room mansion for $75,000. The elaborate Victorian-style is a combination of Italianate and Second Empire architecture.

Piquenard also designed the capitol building in Springfield.

The mansion was well ahead of its time in terms of amenities. Indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, central heat and gas lighting made up an impressive and modern estate.

The last ancestors of the Davis family donated the house to the state in 1960 and it was opened as a state historic site.

“The research into the history of the building started before a single brush of paint was put on the walls for restoration,” said Saulsbery.

The state initiated $2.58 million to use for restoration of the site and years of research and labor resulted in a grand reopening in 1992. Now, nearly 40,000 people tour the mansion each year.

In 2007, it was deemed one of the 150 greatest places in Illinois by the American Institute of Architects. The site is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

“We are thought of as a museum, but we’re really an educational institution. You know the old adage: ‘You’re doomed to repeat mistakes if you don’t learn from history.’ That holds true today and it makes institutions like this more important than ever. We’ve got to know our past if we’re going to succeed in the future,” said Saulsbery.

The mansion grounds, at 1000 E. Monroe Drive in Bloomington, are open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Visitors watch a brief video on the history of the mansion at the visitors center before joining a 50-minute tour of the home, which delves into the lives of David and Sarah Davis, Lincoln and the Irish-Catholic servants who worked in the mansion.

After a tour through two levels of the mansion, visitors can check out the gift shop and the 19th-century flower garden.

With the end of October rapidly approaching, girls high school Volleyball postseason is just days away from beginning.

As for Bolingbrook, head coach Molly DeSerf will take her team to the post-season lead by seniors Melody Raices and Natalie Mitchem.

“I can’t talk enough about those two girls,” DeSerf said.

“They’re both very level headed players.”

DeSerf spoke about Raices and Mitchem how their leadership on and off the court has had a huge impact on their teammates all season long.

“The thing about Natalie that makes her so great is that she’s so humble in the fact that she wants the best for her teammates and expects the best out of everyone

as well and it’s so rare that you see your big girl be the hardest worker in the gym” Deserf said.

“As for [Melody], she’s so feisty, a great defender and she means so much to our team.”

The Raiders, who finished the season on a five game winning streak bringing their overall record to 23-8, including a 3-3-conference record, finished at number 54 in the state of Illinois.

That regular season record was good enough to put the Raiders as the No. 12 seed in the Plainfield North Sectional.

“This is definitely an up year for us because there’s not a lot of eyes on Bolingbrook which gives us opportunities,” DeSerf said. “The message that we give our girls is that it’s any given day, you show up and you play because being a underdog evSEE PLAYOFFS PAGE 10

How to make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today.

When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms.

Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images.

Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures.

• Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other pain-reduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure.

• Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet.

• Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before and after the procedure.

• Speak with the technician. Women can express their concerns about pain to the mammogram technician, who might suggest various ways to minimize discomfort.

Screen out mammogram myths to stay healthy Breast cancer is one of the leading cancers afflicting women worldwide.

According to BreastCancer.org, in 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 63,960 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States.

Women want to do whatever possible to avoid breast cancer or detect it early. Mammograms have long been an important tool in women’s fight against breast cancer.

But for as long as mammograms have been recommended, myths have prevailed concerning the procedure and its benefits and risks. Learning to distinguish between mammogram myths and facts can help women recognize the importance of these effective screenings.

Myth: I’m too young for a mammogram.

Fact: A yearly mammogram is recommended for women age 40 and older to help detect breast cancer

early. This may lead to less aggressive treatment and a higher rate of survival.

Myth: I don’t need an annual mammogram because I have no symptoms or family history.

Fact: The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammograms regardless of symptoms or family history. Earlystage breast cancers may not exhibit symptoms. Women whose breast cancer is caught in its earliest stages have a five-year survival rate of 99 percent.

Myth: I have breast implants so I can’t get screened.

Fact: Women with breast implants can still have regular mammograms.

Special positioning and additional images may be needed, but the procedure is possible.

Myth: Mammograms are ineffective.

Fact: According to British Columbia Cancer Screening, mammograms are the gold standard for detecting breast cancer early. Mammograms may detect breast cancer two to three years before a woman or a health care provider can

Tibbott Students Plant Hope, Dreams, and Bulbs in Their Student Garden

Tibbott students are learning that hope and dreams have to be planted, then cared for and nurtured in order

to blossom. Just like the plants in the Tibbott Student Garden. This week, Tibbott students planted nearly 600 bulbs and also wrote their hopes and dreams on cards, making the connection of the similarities between plants and dreams.

Support VVSD Chili Chefs

This year, VVSD will be represented by two teams at the St. Andrew the Apostle Knights of Columbus Chili Cup. A team led by Ms. Mary Zahtheir (in photo at left) from the Jane Addams Nutrition Services staff will try to improve on their 2nd place finish from last year.

A second team of Bolingbrook HS student chefs under the guidance of culinary arts teacher Ms. Pam Way is also entered.

The winners are determined by the votes of those attending the event on Sat. Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. The $10 admission fee allows you to taste all the chili and cast five votes.

Special thanks also to VVSD BOE President Mr. Steve Quigley who is sponsoring the two teams.
