Rally to shine light on abuse Citizens Against Abuse will host its 19th annual Rally and March Against Abuse from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Oct. 12

Abuse touches the lives of many and many go without the help very much needed.

In an effort to raise awareness and build hope, Citizens Against Abuse will host its 19th annual Rally and March Against Abuse from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Oct. 12 at DuPage Township’s Joseph and Sarah Levy Center, 251 Canterbury Drive, Bolingbrook.

This year’s theme takes a look at bullying in today’s society. Patrick Dati, author of “I AM ME: Survivor of Child Abuse and Bullying Speaks Out,” will be the guest speaker. In his book he details the lifelong effects of childhood rape by serial killer John Wayne Gacy, the bul-

lying he endured from an older brother and his torturous coming out story as a Catholic man. Dati is an advocate committed to helping victims say three simple words: “I have survived!”

Citizens Against Abuse is dedicated to empowering people and is calling on the community to come out to the rally to support one another.

The group’s mission is to raise awareness of the reality of abuse and to inspire unified action toward its elimination and prevention while remembering victims, empowering survivors and providing resources to those it affects.

This annual rally is meant to inspire that action, say organizers.

As Citizens of Abuse indicates, abuse does not just affect a man and a women, but children, the

mentally handicapped, the elderly, students who may not even know each other and abuse can take many forms whether it is physical, mental or social.

Organizers say their goal is to bring to the forefront behavior that isn’t healthy, helping victims realize early on that certain actions are not acceptable before physical abuse can occur or circumstances escalate. Withholding information or medication from a person, setting financial constraints, distancing a person from family and friends, berating someone are all signs of abuse.

Pat Fiaccato, member of Citizens Against Abuse, whose goal it is to reach those victims and give them the support they need to seek help, points out awareness is the key.

A mere fifteen years ago, issues such as these weren’t talked about, people were unlikely to admit they were in such a relationship and the majority didn’t know resources and counseling were available to

those in need.

Fiaccato said they have come a long way but have only just begun in truly educating people and get-

ting them to utilize the tools that they have and get the community to embrace the support.

Citizens Against abuse (formerly known as Take Back the Night) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located at 1112 W. Boughton Road, Bolingbrook.

Local teen performing in Chicago play Middle school students encounter Chicago ghosts

A Bolingbrook teen will perform in a play that showcases the talents of actors with and without disabilities; taking direction from mentors in a production house dedicated to supporting young students.

According to volunteer Barbara DiGuido, in the 1990s Elmhurst native artistic director-writerperformer-Little Person Tekki Lomnicki of Tellin’ Tales Theatre was asked by Chicago’s then first lady Maggie Daley to offer a theatrical program for kids with and without disabilities for After School Matters.

That effort spawned a yearly original Tellin’ Tales Theatre production (with music/lyrics) written and performed by six middle school kids and their six adult theatre mentors with and without disabilities called Six Stories Up! This year’s production features one of Bolingbrook’s own, Miles Wilson, a seventh-grader at Jane Addams Middle School who also plays trumpet in the Mustang marching band.

The mission of Tellin’ Tales Theatre is to shatter barriers between the disabled and non-disabled worlds through the transformative power of personal story. The group said it brings together children and adults from both communities to share their stories in theatrically innovative productions and programs to promote awareness, understanding and acceptance.

led storytelling programs for Gallery 37 and After School Matters for more than a decade.

DiGuido said the idea for the initial Six Stories Up came from her work with these programs, which included students with and without disabilities. Lomnicki, herself a person with a disability, took the process a step further to include adult mentors with disabilities. Six Stories Up in Haunted Chicago is a result of this mix, and strives to remove all barriers between artists, including race, ethnicity, gender, age and ability.

DiGuido said the theme changes each year and “this year’s cast is truly diverse ethnically and abilitywise.”

In Six Stories Up in Haunted Chicago, Wilson plays the character of “Skye” and worked with mentor Di Reed of Austin (Chicago) who plays the spirit of Malcolm X. “My favorite part of Six Stories Up is learning to act out the script,” Wilson said of his first acting experience.

This year’s Six Stories Up in Haunted Chicago is the final production of Tellin’ Tales Theatre’s

21st season. In July, professional theatre mentors were paired with middle school students with and without disabilities. DiGuido said each team was given the mission to explore overcoming difference in their lives. In early August, mentors and their apprentices came together to present their vignettes; a final script was then drafted by Lomnicki and Matthew Kopp.

Six Stories Up in Haunted Chicago finds kids on a ghost tour that takes a turn toward the scary when they stop at Resurrection Cem-

etery. The ghosts of important figures in Chicago history meet up with the kids at Resurrection Cemetery and have a lot to say about the current state of our city. The spirits include Al Capone, John Belushi, Resurrection Mary, Malcolm X, Mary Garden and Lorraine Hansberry. The result is a hilarious and often moving musical peppered with personal stories told by students and adults with cerebral palsy, blindness and dwarfism, as well as their non-disabled peers.

Faculty Jazz Band Quintet making fall debut Oct. 13 The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department will present the October installment of its Musica Viva concert series featuring the JJC Faculty Jazz Band Quintet on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. in the JJC Fine Arts Theatre, located on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. This event is hosted by JJC’s Office of Dual Credit to inform students and their families about resources available to them that can support students’ success in the program.

Annual College Fair Oct. 18 High school students, their parents and adults thinking about returning to school can explore and meet representatives from more than 100 different colleges and universities at Joliet Junior College’s annual College Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 6:00 to 8 p.m. in the new Event Center on Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

Grove Dental hosts candy buy back Grove Dental Associates will host a candy buy back event on November 1 through November 8 at its Bolingbrook and Downers Grove locations. This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy and receive one raffle ticket per 1 pound of candy (5 pound limit). All candy will be donated to local heroes in the Manteno Veterans’ Home.

In addition, to supporting our veterans, Grove Dental Associates hopes to greatly reduce, cavities, gingivitis and decay by decreasing the amount of candy children consume each Halloween.

“We want to start a movement in the Chicago area,” says Dr. Greg Shubat, general dentist and director of dentistry at Grove Dental Associates in Downers Grove.

“Yes, brushing every day and seeing your dentist twice a year are great preventatives but eliminating the sugar altogether provides your teeth with the best possible health outcome,” said Shubat.

A study conducted by the American Heart Association found children as young as 12 months bypass the daily recommendation of sugar intake per day. Which means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead to hyperactivity, weight gain and other health problems like diabetes and heart disease. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken and damaged braces.

The staff at Grove Dental Associates want families to enjoy the fun of trick-or-treating but this year do it for a great cause. “We believe our candy buy back event will offer a great solution by helping parents reduce the amount of candy consumed by children

while offering a sweet treat to many veterans residing in a VA home,” said Shubat.

Lewis U, JJC and COD working to keep vets in college Lewis University is partnering with Joliet Junior College and College of DuPage to enhance student veteran retention and educational success. The new program “Student Veteran Peer to Peer Mentor-

ship Model from Community College to 4-Year University” is set to begin fall 2017 and sponsored by a $50,000 McCormick Foundation grant.

“This program enables us to connect with nearly 2,000 student veterans and better assist them through their entire process of attending a community college or Four-Year University. For those interested in a four-year degree at the community college level, they can have a better understanding of how to make the transition,” Roman Ortega Jr., director of Lewis University Veteran Affairs, commented. Veteran support from Lewis University directly benefits more than 500 veterans, service members, cadets, and military family members currently enrolled in Lewis University.

Student Veteran Peer to Peer Mentorship Model from Community College to 4-Year University will engage student veterans early in their college education and continue through their degree completion at their respective institutions. Lewis University, Joliet Junior College and the College of DuPage will connect through programming and peer mentorship opportunities. How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.

Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.

A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Medicaid is still a target of healthcare reform Debate is far from over and shifting to the states with an eye to funding

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE What’s going to happen to healthcare now that Senate Republicans have failed to pass their bill, which would have replaced much of the Affordable Care Act? In particular, what’s going to happen to Medicaid, the government’s largest insurance program, which covers 74 million Americans?

This is a good time to clarify what was at stake and may still be up for grabs in the months to come.

Despite its importance to so many people, Medicaid has always been the health system’s stepchild.

Many doctors and dentists have avoided taking Medicaid patients saying the program didn’t pay enough.

Until recently, editors haven’t been keen to feature stories about Medicaid believing that their audience was not interested in reading about people most likely to be on the program – the poor, the disabled, kids, and seniors who needed it to pay for their nursing home care.

Suddenly, media stories about cutting Medicaid and the loss of coverage to millions became news. “In the course of the debate, it’s become clear that Medicaid has tremendous public support.

There has been much more focus in this debate than I’ve seen in any health policy debate,” said Shannon Buckingham, vice president for communications at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington D.C., think tank.

So what is this program that affects so many and will undoubtedly surface again either later this year or next as a political football?

It was created in 1965 under the Johnson administration at the same time Medicare was passed. Unlike Medicare, though, which is a social insurance entitlement to which people contribute throughout their

working lives, Medicaid is a welfare program.

Those applying for coverage must meet strict asset and income tests, which mean they can’t own very much and they can’t earn a lot of money. Everyone who qualifies is guaranteed coverage.

The benefit package that all states must offer is generous, covering many services, including nursing home care and transportation to medical appointments.

It pays for care given at rural health clinics and federally qualified health clinics.

States can provide optional benefits such as prescription drugs, respiratory care, dental services, physical and speech therapy. Many states do.

States and the federal government share in the cost, and that’s where the fight in Congress comes in.

As medical costs have risen - with few controls on how high they can go - states have found that Medicaid is consuming larger shares of their annual budgets, often crowding out other needs like fixing roads.

The federal government continues to pay more too.

One solution for this dilemma is to change the way Medicaid is financed - from a state-federal matching arrangement into what’s called a block grant.

Under a block grant, the federal government will give a set amount of money to the states.

It’s a way reduce its healthcare expenditures while shifting more of the burden to the states to cover their residents who depend on Medicaid.

Conservatives have argued for years that giving the states a lump sum would mean they could manage their programs as they saw fit.

That’s why during debates on

Medicaid you hear phrases like “more flexibility” and “greater freedom.”

But others argue that flexibility and freedom come at a cost.

It could allow states to offer fewer benefits and impose restrictions that would make it harder for people to get care.

The Graham-Cassidy bill that was the Senate’s last attempt at remodeling the Affordable Care Act called for block grants and eliminated the ACA’s Medicaid expansion program that had provided healthcare to those with incomes between the poverty level and 138 percent of the poverty level.

This year that’s about $16,600 for a single person and about $34,000 for a family of four.

The expansion had brought some 12 million people onto the program.

The Medicaid debate is far from over and is shifting to the states.

Several have applied for waivers from the federal government to allow them more flexibility.

For example, a state might ask for permission to enroll Medicaid recipients in private insurance plans as Arkansas has done.

While a private market solution might sound good, it could mean that people on Medicaid would have to pay higher deductibles and other cost sharing.

Indiana has a waiver that requires recipients to make small monthly payments and maintain a savings account mostly funded by the state to pay for some of their care.

People who don’t make their payments may be locked out of coverage for a time.

Some states like Arizona and Kentucky are eyeing work requirements.

CRASHED Romeoville’s first win of the season comes at Plainfield East on the Bengals’ homecoming game

On a wet and windy Friday night, Romeoville played rude house guests as the Spartans secured their first victory of the season with a, 14-12, win over Plainfield East on the Bengals’ homecoming night.

“It really wasn’t a huge win for the program, it was a huge win for those kids that came all summer,” Romeoville head coach Oliver Gibson praised. “They really deserved that win and I hope this makes them realize that it’s not how you start something, it’s how you finish it.”

In a first half that was dominated by the unfavorable conditions and stingy defense, Romeoville (1-6) and Plainfield East (1-6) both had a hard time finding any sort of offensive rhythm throughout the first two

quarters. Up until Plainfield running back, Nicholas Pratscher’s, 57-yard run with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, neither team legitimately threatened to break the scoreless deadlock.

Having seemingly converted on the rare red zone opportunity with a 13-yard touchdown run, the Bengals’ score was wiped out by a costly holding penalty. Eventually Plainfield had to settle for a, 3-0, halftime lead thanks to Justin Ayres’ 22yard field goal.

Out of the break, the Spartan defense came up with a huge interception to kill a promising Bengal drive to open the half. Thanks to the big defensive play, the Romeoville offense was able to capitalize on the momentum shift and drive 70-yards for a score. A pair of SEE PARTY PAGE 14

Lewis defeats UW-Parkside 1-0 in 2 OT Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) recorded his second consecutive game-winning goal, giving the Lewis University men’s soccer team a 1-0 double overtime win over Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday (Oct. 8) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lewis Stadium.

In the 104th minute Mueller took a pass from Timm Adler (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) at the 30-yard line, drove past the defender and beat the goalie for his sixth goal of the season.

The win is the sixth straight for the Flyers (9-3, 8-2 in GLVC), the longest winning streak since they won nine straight games in 2010.

Philip Huang (Flossmoor, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) picked up his fourth shutout of the year in goal, making four saves.

Lewis outshout UW-Parkside

(3-7-1, 3-5-1 in GLVC) 21-12 for the game, 8-1 in the overtime periods.

It was the sixth overtime game on the year for Lewis, which improved to 4-2 in overtime games.

Lewis returns to the field Sunday (Oct. 15) for a road game against Illinois-Springfield.

• A second half goal by Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) provided the difference Sunday (Oct. 8) as the Lewis University women’s soccer team defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Lewis Stadium.

Parnello found the back of the net from 10 yards out in the 69th minute on a pass from Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) to provide the game’s lone goal.

It was the first goal of the season for Parnello.

The win moves the Flyers to

5-5-2 overall, 4-4-2 in the GLVC. UW-Parkside falls to 2-9-1, 1-7-1 in the GLVC. The Flyers remained unbeaten at home, moving to 3-0-2.

Lewis outshot UW-Parkside 1410 for the game. Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) led the Flyers with four shots on goal.

Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) made seven saves in goal to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.

Lewis goes back on the road Sunday (Oct. 15) to take on Illinois-Springfield at noon.

Hyland and sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) each notched double-doubles in the win. Hyland had a match-high 17 kills along with 16 digs, while Preuss collected 11 kills and a match-high 19 digs.

Lewis also received 10 kills apiece from redshirt senior right side hitter Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and senior middle hitter Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn).

Flyer redshirt junior setter Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) dished out a match-high 46 assists, while sophomore middle hitter Caro-

line Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./ Carl Sandburg) had a match-high seven blocks (1 solo).

Lewis recorded a hitting percentage of .254 (58 kills, 22 errors, 142 attacks), while the Bulldogs connected at a clip of .031 (31-27127).

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 13), as they open up first day action at the 10th Annual Midwest Region Crossover.

Lewis will be put to the test, as the Flyers will take on two nationally-ranked squads in its three matches.

Lewis (17-1) opens with an 11:30 AM meeting with No. 25 Findlay on Friday (Oct. 13), followed by a 5:30 PM showdown with Grand Valley State.

The Flyers return to the court on Saturday (Oct. 14) with a 1 PM meeting with No. 7 Ferris State.

In the 100 yard backstroke Knoblauch finished first with 52.97.

Sater took third with 1:01.82.

Tapia finished first in the 500 yard freestyle with 4:51.10. Curtis finished second with 5:06.79.

Coming in first for the 100 yard breaststroke was Latta who touched the wall at 1:03.13, followed closely by Fozo who recorded a 1:03.35.

Olczyk placed third with 1:04.33.

The Flyers closed out the meet by placing first in the 400 yard freestyle relay made up of Norg, Tapia, Williams, and Star who recorded 3:16.33. Jeremy Burbrink

Former Voyager Media editor returns to Flyers Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced Wednesday (Oct. 4) the hiring of Scott Taylor as the Director of Bowling and Athletic Communication Assistant.

“Scott Taylor will add to our intercollegiate athletic department,” Planek said. “His deep knowledge of high school bowling and his relationships with numerous coaches and prospects will help our recruitment of new students along with his Lewis undergraduate experience.

“He will be a great ambassador for our newest sport. His award winning journalistic skills will aid in our athletic communications department.”

Taylor, a 2007 graduate of Lewis University, graduated with a degree in Journalism and a minor in coaching. During his time at Lewis he was the Sports Editor for “The Flyer,” Lewis’ student newspaper, men’s basketball manager and participated in numerous intramural sports, including bowling.

After graduating he was the Athletic Facilities Maintenance & Game Management Graduate Assistant.

“I have loved everything about Lewis, especially the athletic department, since the first time I went to a basketball game when I was a senior in high school,” Taylor said. “Lewis athletics has a great tradition and I am honored to be a part of it.

“I am excited to be back at Lewis and am looking forward to the opportunity ahead in the different roles. I feel my experience and knowledge of the university will help me succeed in both positions.”

Taylor has spent the past 11 years covering high school sports in the Chicagoland area, including four as the sports editor for Voy-

ager Media Publications, and won 12 awards from the Illinois Press Association.

Because of his love and knowledge of the sport, Taylor created a website dedicated to high school and collegiate bowling throughout the state of Illinois. The website features state rankings and results from across the state, as well as interviews with bowlers and player profiles. His years covering bowling has helped him develop strong relationships with parents, bowlers and coaches throughout the state.

“I am grateful for the opportunity Lewis and Dr. Planek have given to me to achieve a dream of mine,” Taylor said. “I also want to thank my friends and family for their support throughout the entire process. “I am looking forward to promoting the bowling program as well as all of the athletic teams to the best of my ability. I’m eager to help the future student athletes be successful both on the lanes and off.”

He lives in Joliet, IL with his wife Mandie, a Lewis graduate, and son Knox.

“I’m so proud of our defense and the continuous pressure that they put on Plainfield’s offense all night,” Gibson sang.

“I’ve been on the other end of this situation many times before, so we’re not getting carried away. We know they made some mistakes, but we just have to use this performance to get some consistency over these next two weeks.”

Plainfield was able to cut the score to, 14-12, with just over three minutes left in the game with another Ayres 22-yard field goal.

However, with just one minute to go, Ayres’ potentially game winning 35-yard field goal fell short and the Spartans were able to ice the game away for their first win of the season.

“We’re not thinking of ending the season just yet,” Gibson said. “We got to the point where we were losing games big and losing players to injuries. Now we’ve got two games left, with all hands on deck, and that’s all that we are focusing on right now.”

The Romeoville Spartans will look to keep winning next Friday night, when they return home to face Plainfield Central.

While the Plainfield East Bengals will hope to bounce back from the sobering homecoming defeat on the road at Plainfield North.

Where should mom put money for tot’s future?

A nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea DEAR DAVE, I have a savings account for my two-year old that has $5,000 in it, and about half of that is in gold. I’m going to save for his college separately, and give this to him to help start his life after school. Is there a better place to put this other than a traditional savings account?

LAURA DEAR LAURA, First of all, you should not invest in gold. Gold is a very volatile, very dangerous investment. I don’t have a dime invested in gold, and I would strongly suggest that you not invest in it, either. If you take a look

at the life-long track record on gold it will scare you to death.

For the time being, you can leave it all in a traditional savings account. But if he’s not going to use it for many, many years you could move it into a conservative mutual fund. In fact, you started when he was at such young age, a nice, conservative mutual fund might be a really good idea.

When he gets a little older, he can start adding to it himself from the money he makes from odd jobs and chores and such. After 15 years or so, thanks to your foresight and his contributions, he’ll probably

wind up with a pretty nice chunk of cash.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, Why do you recommend paying off debts from smallest to largest when doing the debt snowball?

MICHAEL DEAR MICHAEL,

Lots of people think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach. This seems to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago if those people could do math they wouldn’t be drowning in debt.

Debt is not a mathematical problem, it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest — even though it may be mathematically incorrect — is that modifying your behavior and inspiring you to get out of debt is more important than the math.

Your probability of becoming wealthy has a lot more to do with your behavior than any sort of financial sophistication or academic

degree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next largest debt. When you pay that one off — and you’ve wiped out two debts — it energizes you. At that point, you really start to believe in yourself and the fact that you’re on the road to becoming debt-free!
