Forest preserve permits go on sale Jan. 3 The Forest Preserve District of Will County will begin selling 2023 picnic and camping permits at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, both online at ReconnectWithnature.org and at the Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet. Permits will be available at the other visitor centers starting at 10 a.m. Jan. 3, or, in the case of Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Bolingbrook, Jan. 4.

snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating and wildlife viewing in the preserves. Free, ages 16 or older. Register online for the Zoom link.

Volunteer Morning: 9 a.m.noon Thursday, Jan. 12, Riverview Farmstead Preserve, Naperville.

Get some fresh air and exercise while helping to make a difference in your community. Activities will include removing invasive woody plants. Space is limited, and registration is required. Morning Bird Hike: 8-10 a.m.

Saturday, Jan. 14, Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. Get your 2023 bird list started with a hike. Join other birders to learn, explore and search for winter residents in the preserve. This hike highlights birds that spend their winters in the woodlands and fields. Bring your binoculars

and favorite bird guide. New birders are welcome. Free, ages 16 or older. Register by Jan. 13.

Cocoa or Joe Hike: 9-10 a.m.

Sunday, Jan. 15, Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Bolingbrook. Embrace the cold and quiet winter morning with a guided hike around the nature center. After the hike, visit the fire and sip a complimentary cup of hot cocoa or joe. Free, all ages. Register by Jan. 12.

Little Explorers – Colors of Winter: 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon.

Bring your preschoolers to Four Rivers to explore the colors of winter with a story, a hike, handson activities, crafts and free play.

Dress for indoor and outdoor activities. Free, ages 3-5. Register by Jan. 17.

Take a Break With Woodpeckers (Zoom Webinar): noon-12:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 20, online. Grab your lunch and enjoy a quick, 30-minute program about woodpeckers.

Forest preserve permits go on sale Jan. 3 A judge in Kankakee County issued an opinion that part of the SAFE-T Act is unconstitutional.

The judge’s ruling impacts the Pretrial Fairness Act, the portion of the SAFE-T Act that reforms pretrial release conditions and ends money bond.

All other measures of the SAFET Act remain intact, and we anticipate the judge’s ruling will be reviewed by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Additionally, this ruling applies only to the parties in the lawsuit, which does not include Cook County.

As such, Cook County is proceeding with full implementation of the SAFE-T Act on January 1,

2023 as planned.

As leaders in Cook County’s criminal court system, we remain committed to the principles of pretrial fairness and the elimination of money bond.

The historic reforms in the Pretrial Fairness Act represent an important step toward improving community safety, addressing decades of harm to Black and Brown communities, and guaranteeing equal justice for all under the law—not only for those who can afford to pay.

History has shown us that the status quo is unjust, does not contribute to community safety and is not a solution to crime. This lawsuit and resultant ruling are

the culmination of a concerted effort to undermine reform; those who attempt to vilify these reforms are proponents of a system that has contributed to the racial injustices of mass incarceration and the over-policing of Black and Brown communities, which has diminished safety, resiliency and trust for many residents.

The SAFE-T Act and the Pretrial Fairness Act were thoughtfully drafted to prioritize safety for victims, accused people and entire communities.

Cook County officials look forward to the Illinois Supreme Court’s review and clarification regarding the constitutionality of these laws.

Until then, they stand firm in their commitment to the smooth and successful implementation of the SAFE-T Act in its entirety and look forward to welcoming in this historic reform for Cook County in the new year and are confident the rest of the state will join us soon.

Shawshank is actually the highest-rated film on IMDb and is one of the most popular films we’ve ever presented.
