Formerly operating out of a small storefront in town, the new Romeoville VNA Health Care clinic opened its door to a new larger facility ready to welcome area residents in its 22-exam room clinic at 160 Independence Blvd.

VNA administrators, local officials and politicians including

Congressman Bill Foster, recently received a tour of the facility before its official opening set for Jan. 21.

“The best part of my job (after being in Washington discussing the issues of healthcare) is to come home and see all the good such a building like this will do,” said Foster.

VNA Health Care is a Medicaid and Medicare-certified, low cost clinic that offers patients a discount if they are not covered by an insurance plan. It is described as a “one-stop shop” for general health care needs. VNA Health Center provides a full menu of services including medical, dental, mental health and chronic disease management care.

With the cold winter months upon us, many take to the indoors and the Fountaindale Public Library is inviting residents to come inside for a variety of programming.

Frostbite might keep you from a run, so why not check out a Zumba class at the library. The district has been including exercise programs for a few years, including yoga, Zumba and Conquer Your Core, which are taught by Bolingbrook Park District instructors. Check www.fountaindale.org.

The group came before the Romeoville village board last year with a concept plan for a new facility. While federal approval was sought, VNA opened a small facility at Taylor and Weber roads, in the Jewel-Osco shopping plaza.

VNA built the facility on a 3.1-acre parcel of land next to Romeoville High School, west of Route 53 and north of Material Service Drive.

The new single-story, brick development includes a 10,340 square-foot clinic with 22 exam rooms and room for possible expansion in the future.

Clinic coordinator Allan Garcia explained that this is the largest and the first VNA facility to be a freestanding building.

The clinic currently will have one primary care physician until an increase in clients dictates the need for more staff, expecting to serve 20 patients a day to start. One area is dedicated to pediatrics and family care and has a lab on-site. A fullyequipped kitchen also is on-site, a key to its Step by Step Wellness programs to teach patients ways to prepare diabetic and heart-healthy meals.

The clinic will be open Mon. and Thurs., 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tues., Wed., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sat. from 8 a.m. to noon. Additional VNA clinics are located in Bolingbrook, Joliet and Aurora.

In a public library, STEAM means creating opportunities for children to explore and experiment The STEAM family events at Fountaindale will be set up in Creativity Park and include several activities and experiments at each station: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Children and their parents will move from one station to the next.

Recent science experiments included an activity on how to make five pennies float; using microscopes and magnifying glasses to observe autumnal items; and making tissue paper leaves float using static electricity. In technology, patrons were able to use a light table, iPads and LittleBits; the engineering element included a plank construction set; the artistic side sought out sponge paintings; and graphing favorite holiday foods focused on math.

Check out the next STEAM event to be held March 26 as well as the entire week of spring break, April 3-8, which will be dedicated to STEAM.

Online degree The library district is offering, for a limited time, an opportunity to receive your high school diploma for free.

Bolingbrook residents, age 19 and older, who reside in the Fountaindale Public Library district boundaries are eligible to receive an accredited, limited-time scholarship to Smart Horizons Career Online High School. Fountaindale is currently offering a one-time extension on their enrollment period through March 2016.

“We’re honored to be the first library in Illinois to partner with Career Online High School and Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development to offer these grant-funded scholarships, which have made pursuing a high school diploma possible for district residents who have aged out of the opportunity to enroll in traditional high school programs,” said Catherine Yanikoski, Deputy Director.

“We started this program in October of 2013 with 75 scholarships and have seen consistent hard work and efforts by those who have been awarded scholarships. We look forward to awarding diplomas at a graduation in the near future!”

VVSD’s comprehensive safety plan holds ‘key’ to safe school environment District looks to maintain open communication channels with students, staff As Valley View School District 365U enters the second half of the 2015-16 school year, School Safety Coordinator Leroy Brown is reminding students, parents, staff members and the community that everyone must work together to provide a safe learning environment for children.

“The dynamics of education have changed considerably given the tragic incidents in schools during the past decade,” Brown said. “In order for Valley View to keep students, staff and facilities as safe and secure as possible, an allencompassing approach to safety and preparedness must be at the

heart of our effort.”

Key to the Valley View efforts is a comprehensive school safety plan that includes individual emergency management plans for every school building and facility in the district. VVSD staff and security personnel are well-versed in safety procedures.

“Our goal is prevention, but we must also be prepared. When seconds count, we must be ready with emergency response plans

that are thorough, practiced and efficient,” Brown said. “Our team understands the importance of cooperation and coordination with multiple departments, organizations and jurisdictions.

Ongoing collaboration with local law enforcement is essential.”

In addition, Brown said, Valley View has promised to maintain open communication channels with students, staff and the community during an emergency

BHS teacher Tilia Detrick earns National Board Certification Bolingbrook High School special education teacher Tilia Detrick is the latest Valley View School District 365U educator to become a National Board Certified Teacher.

Forty-four current or former

VVSD teachers have earned National Board Certification which is the most respected professional certification available in education.

It was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished

teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide.

Detrick, who is in her third year at BHS, teaches a sophomore level course in physical science and is the faculty sponsor for both Student Government and Red Zone (the student spirit club for athletic events).

A graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s in special education, she is currently working on her Master’s degree at Concordia University. Prior to coming to BHS, she was a special education teacher at three different high schools, Urbana, Streamwood and Oswego East.

“I really enjoy working with students with learning and behavior

disabilities,” Detrick said. “I’m pretty laid back and I think that works for most of my students. You have to give them the time and they will accomplish what they need to do.

You have to believe in them.”

NBCTs have developed and demonstrated the advanced knowledge, skills and practices required of an outstanding educator.

Fuel Up to Play 60 grant helps Ward emphasize nutrition and exercise Thanks to a $4,000 grant from Fuel Up to Play 60 and the National Dairy Council, B.J. Ward Elementary School students will not only be sipping nutritious Smoothies for breakfast in coming months, but they will also have new equipment for their “teacher-taught recess.”

The two grant programs, which were the brainchild of Ward’s firstyear physical education teacher Brad Bogwill, are designed to help students start the day off right so they can be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

“Nutrition and exercise are important,” Bogwill said. “They will be better learners.”

Bogwill’s “Breakfast Anytime Anywhere” Smoothie Program included a contest in which students submitted their own recipes for

smoothies with three stipulations: they must be nutritious, they must include a dairy product and they must include a cup of fruit or veggies.

“We tried to incorporate math in there by asking them to figure out how much of each ingredient was needed,” he said. “Some of the students had really great ideas.”

The VVSD Nutrition Services Department reviewed the entries and picked a half dozen or so finalists. Bogwill and Ward Kitchen Manager Wendy Stratton will decide on each of the four winners that will become the “smoothie of the month” in February, March, April and May. “This smoothie contest got them thinking about what they’re eating, and asking how nutritious is it?”

By Jason Florin | For The Bugle As the excitement of starting a new year begins to fade, often the wellintentioned pledges we made also lose steam. Maybe you promised to lose weight, to learn a new language, to quit smoking or to work out every day, and now you find yourself looking forward to 2017 as the year of change.

According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, there are almost 50 percent more gym enrollments in January than during an average month throughout the year.

This indicates that we start the year with the best intentions before drifting down a path toward old behavior.

Understanding change

In the 1980s, researchers at the University of Maryland developed a unique way of understanding how people make changes. They described a series of stages that everyone experiences before, during and after making a significant transition. This model, called the “stages of change,” is used by professionals in various healthcare settings, and it is useful to anyone considering a change. The approach involves five basic phases: • Pre-contemplation – A point where we don’t have any plans to change; • Contemplation – When we begin to consider changing and may even

make plans to change sometime in the future • Preparation – Where we make a decision to change and create a plan to make it happen • Action – When we follow our plan and commit to the change • Maintenance – Where we have established the new behavior as part of our habits Let’s use an example of someone who has been a smoker for many years and made a New Year’s resolution to quit in 2016. This person may have grown tired of the expense of smoking, having to stand outside in the cold and might have experienced some health issues.

So he decided to quit, which is great.

At this point, he was probably in the contemplation stage and may have even taken some actions Jan. 1, such as throwing out his pack and buying nicotine gum. After fighting through a week of cravings, he bought a pack and had a few cigarettes.

This pattern is extremely common

when beginning the process of change.

A lot of people think they have failed, although in reality, any change is difficult and should be commended.

However, more work has to be done in the contemplation and preparation stages before the change will take hold.

If you can relate to the description above, then consider taking some time to evaluate your own process. Before trying a new action, did you have a concept of why you were making the change, which is a critical part of moving out of contemplation?

Also, did you put together a reasonable plan, the all-important preparation phase? If not, then now is a chance to correct those steps to help you move forward.

On the TV show “The Biggest Loser,” contestants compete to lose weight by making major lifestyle changes. One of the tools used on the show involves contestants writing down their No. 1 reason for wanting to change and then making T-shirts with that statement.

The slogans reveal the hopes and desires each person carries.

Your own reason might be simple – to look good at the beach this summer or maybe to beat your dad in a 5k. As long as it pushes you to stick to your goal, then it’s the right purpose.

You can make your own shirt, simply write the reason on a piece of paper, or maybe keep a picture with you that is a reminder of what you want.

I would like to relate my elation from reading the Op-Ed “Life doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be joyful” by Daniel Smrokowski. What a wonderful column to start the new year, joyful indeed.

With the mass commercialization of the preceding holidays, he offered “some resolutions for how you can change the game for a more accepting and inclusive world.” His message of positive change,

perseverance, maximizing personal achievement and call for readers to consider the contributions by persons with special needs was in hard contrast to the divisiveness and acrimony that commands so much mass media coverage.

Also, whatever limitations his medical condition causes him are not reflected in his articles, which appear in the Bugle.

Rather, Mr. Smrokowski’s journalism is instead completely cogent, well ordered and with an eloquence that far surpasses that of many other authors.

By comparison, it is common to find columns by “professional” writers so inelegantly constructed as to be almost painful to read.

Further, he does so while avoiding the strident advocacy and victimization that often diminishes similar pieces.

Crime is down, retail sales are up and business continues to expand.

That was the message Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar expressed during his annual state of the village address, held Jan. 14 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

The Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event. Giving a recap of the past year and the state of affairs for the village, Claar described a town that continues its success based on 50 years of momentum. Bolingbrook celebrated its 50th anniversary this past year with a host of activities to recognize its short but rich history.

Claar kicked off his speech by noting that crime fell 2 percent in 2015 – the lowest it has been in 20 years – showing a steady decrease over the past decade.

One of the biggest announcements included the news that Tony’s Finer Foods will be occupying the Food For Less storefront that has remained vacant for several years. Tony Ingraffia and Domenico Gambino purchased the Pheasant Hill Shopping Center and will work to fill the other storefronts, as well. They own 13 other stores in the Chicago area, including its Plainfield location on Route 59.

Claar also pointed toward the economic success of The Promenade, which he called a huge economic engine for the village.

Retail sales at the outdoor mall are up by 4 percent. The Promenade is 94 percent occupied – 6 percent higher than the national average.

Starwood, owner of the Promenade, plans to invest $2 million in 2016 for sidewalk canopies, lighting and a new kid’s play area, the mayor added.

last year, as well. The Innsbruck Apartments were completely renovated and renamed the Promenade Apartments.

In addition, construction on the 288-unit Tapestry Promenade Apartments is underway. Located just off of Janes Avenue, the complex will offer high-end amenities.

However, Claar noted that the village is running out of vacant land, with the only two active subdivisions left – Bella Vista and Americana Estates. The village is negotiation with Northern Builders to annex approximately 190 acres of single-family residential property immediately east of the golf course.

Though the Bolingbrook International Clow Airport was closed a good portion of 2015, it has reopened with a new 75-footwide runway that includes lights and wider aprons. The Bolingbrook mayor said the upgrades made the airport safer and applauded the fact that they were completed using federal funds.

One of the biggest problems facing the village is the Emerald Ash Borer, according to Claar. To date, the village has removed 8,000 trees, replanted more than 3,300 trees and estimated that an additional 3,000 will be cut this year. He said the project will eventually cost the village millions of dollars but added that it is an inevitable dilemma the village continues to wrestle with.

The village also continues to face problems with American Lake Water and its sister company Illinois American Water. Bolingbrook, Romeoville,Woodridge, Lemont and Homer Glen filed a condemnation suit against Illinois American Water, which is still ongoing.

The Bolingbrook Golf Club, owned by the village, had a successful year, averaging 140 weddings a year; with two-thirds of its revenue coming from food and

beverage sales. The club attracts a variety of events, hosting a number of charity functions including ones for the Muscular Dystrophy, March of Dimes, Bo Jackson’s Give Me a Chance Foundation and more celebrity attended events. Tony Ommen of the Chicago Blackhawks brought back the Stanley Cup again, raising nearly $25,000 for area charities. The golf course itself was named by the Golf Range Association of America as one of the top 50 public ranges in the country.

The state budget crisis continues to have its fallout with a stall in transportation projects, one being the reconstruction of the Interstate 55 and Weber Road Bridge. The I-55 and Route 126 Interchange continues to be discussed but also is delayed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

However, the 95th Street Bridge was opened connecting Boughton Road to 95th Street. In addition, plans are being drawn to design a roundabout for the intersection just immediately east of the golf course at the intersection of Rodeo and Kings Road.

The village saw several new openings including O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Store, formerly the empty Wendy’s building; Brown’s Chicken moved to the east side and a new Checker’s now occupies the building; a new tenant is expected for the former site of La Hacienda which has been empty for years.

New businesses include the Tamari Japanese Steakhouse, Xfinity/ Comcast, Embroidme, Sterling Knight Jewerly and Pawn Shop; Firehouse Subs, IHOP, Sophia’s House of Pancakes, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Mia, Wingstop, Healthsource Chiropractic, Bay State Milling and the Vitamin Shoppe.

Coming soon is the The Range at 355, a gun range on the south side of Bolingbrook across from Costco.

The complete training facility will teach patrons how to properly use weapons.

The industrial sector saw new and current businesses take on great expansion such as that of Swap.com, one of the largest online consignment stores which will be

adding 400 employees and moving into a building with 361,000 square feet of space; Bolingbrook’s largest employer Weather Tech added a seventh building; ULTA will be expanding by 66 percent; and other businesses followed suit with expansion including West Liberty Foods, ATI, Power Equipment Direct, Computer Projects of Illinois, Catching Fluid Power, PODS, Opus, Molto Properties and Worldwide Dispensers.

The hotel sector is growing with the addition of the Hilton Garden Inn, and the spring construction of the Residence Inn by Marriott.

As expansion and growth continue in Bolingbrook, so does Claar’s plan to lead, quipping that he will be running once again to remain in office.

TALENT Area players helping with St. Francis’ successful season

The University of St. Francis women’s basketball team entered last week ranked No. 2 in the country in the NAIA Division II. Even after a 116-97 home loss to No. 10 Olivet Nazarene University, the Saints still finished the week 16-3 after a loss at St. Ambrose, giving them nearly as many wins as last year (17-15).

Among the members of the team are several local athletes in senior Khadija Cooley of Joliet West, juniors Angelica Osusky from Romeoville, Khamari Jordan of Bolingbrook and Mary Rouse from Joliet Catholic and sophomore Christina Ekhomu of JCA. “This year has been great,” Osusky said. “I love my teammates and it is great playing with them and the bond we have.

We’re really excited to prove to people how far we’ve come. We

all work hard and want to win.

We’re giving our all all the time.”

“It is a lot of fun having players from this area come to the local community university and make a name for themselves,” USF coach Samantha Quigley said.

“They are all upperclassmen so they have been around the program three or four years and are building something special.

They have seen everything develop into success.”

The players enjoy playing in front of the local audience and with players they played against in high school.

“It’s really nice because a lot of people are able to come out to the games,” Osusky said. “My high school coaches, family and people in the community get to come out and see us. It is fun.”

“It is nice because you have basically played with some of these girls your entire career from middle school up through high school,” Jordan said. “It is nice to get to know them on a

Bolingbrook, Romeoville send bowlers to sectional

Entering the final game Bolingbrook sat in fifth place at the Plainfield South Regional at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.

With the top four teams

advancing, it appeared the Raiders would come up short of a team sectional berth for the first time in three years.

However, a 1,040 in the final game vaulted them into third place with a 6,091 to advance to the Sandburg Sectional.

“It was partly because Oswego

had a bad game, but we still took third place though,” Steve Stropkovic said. “We were motivated and a little nervous going into the last game. The goal has been to get the team to state and we can still do that.”

“It feels really good,” Matt Zulfer said. “We came into today with high hopes and we were strong throughout the whole tournament.

We got a little nervous coming from behind but we kept the same mindset and that really helped at the end and pulled through. We kept a positive attitude and didn’t make mistakes. Everybody kept their heads up.”

Plainfield North won the regional title with a 6,599.

Stropkovic led the Raiders with a 1,311. Matt Delli shot a 1,223, Zulfer rolled a 1,222, Alex Acosta had a 1,173 and Cameron Zulfer added a 1,162.

“I think this was my highest series of the year, so I am very happy with how I did,” Stropkovic said. “We really focused the last game.”

Now Bolingbrook will head to the Sandburg Sectional Saturday at Orland Bowl. The sectional is

Any time you win it helps with recruiting, but winning with local players can help that much more.

“It helps a lot. We recruit in the Chicagoland area and Joliet area. Any time your team has success it helps recruiting. This is a special place and that is what I tell recruits.”

“We’re really good where we are going, so I like our chances,” Stropkovic said. “I feel like we are going to do pretty well. We can’t worry about how other teams are doing. If we just worry about our team, we will be fine.”

“We have to work on all the little mistakes that we made on our way here,” Matt Zulfer said. “We’re going to go in pretty comfortable.

We want to make state. We have to make our spares and keep a positive attitude.”

•Romeoville will be represented at the sectional by junior Jacob Hubbs.

Hubbs fired a 1,377 to finish third overall.

“I feel good,” he said. “Going into that last game I was top three and maybe I could make a push to finish first and see what happens.

“Everyone is so dedicated every day at practice,” Rouse said. “We come before practice and at practice we push each other. There isn’t a five-minute stretch where we aren’t going hard.”

“Everybody knows their role,” Jordan said. “We play to together and we enjoy it.”

The other key has been defense.

“Our defense has been the key,” Ekhomu said. “I think we are a lot quicker this year. Coach is getting us to buy into the defensive end of the ball. I’m really happy with the team and

we have taken big strides.”

“It has been on the defensive end,” Quigley said. “We have done a great job of keeping teams in front of us. It has been a big emphasis of ours and our No. 1 priority.”

In the loss to the Tigers last week, the Saints got caught playing the Tigers’ style, which is a breakneck pace.

“Unfortunately it affected us because we went into their style of play,” Rouse said. “We didn’t get set up on offense and kind of rushed things.”

“I don’t think it was too fast for us,” Ekhomu said. “We let them

speed it up and it is not like we can’t play that fast but we have to play our game. It is exciting to watch, but when they are burying threes it isn’t that fun.”

The loss can be a learning experience for USF, which still travels to ONU Feb. 17 and could face off with them again in the CCAC Tournament and even in the NAIA Tournament.

“I definitely think today was a learning experience,” Osusky said. “Today didn’t go as planned, but we will move forward with it.

We will see them again, so I think it was definitely a good learning experience.”

“We have high goals,” Rouse said. “We have to put this one behind us and move on. We’re looking forward to playing them again.”

The sky is the limit with the Saints’ goals, despite having a young squad.

“We want to keep doing the unexpected and keep taking wins,” Ekhomu said. “We want to go far.”

“I think we can go all the way,” Jordan said. “It is all about how we bounce back. We will learn from it. We definitely have to keep going hard and not take a play off.”

I’m really happy with how I bowled today. The last three games worked out to my advantage.”

He has experience at Orland Bowl and knows it will take a

big score to win, something he accomplished last month.

“I don’t ever think I’ve been this confident in my life,” Hubbs said. “I feel good. In conference I

struggled and took a week off and cleared my head and I feel great.

Our tournament there a month ago I shot 1,487 and won. I’m hoping to do that again and win.

Any tournament there you need to shoot 1,300 minimum. That’s the characteristic there. I have to stay forced and make good shots.

Spares are always a key.”

Cajigas selected to play in annual Power Showcase Julio Cajigas a Romeoville High School freshman was selected to play in the 10th Annual Power Showcase Future Stars Team in Miami Fl. Cajigas represented Illinois during the Home Run Derby and All American game that featured some of the most prolific high school amateur prospects from around the country.

The 10th Annual Power Showcase was held from Dec. 28 through Jan. 2 at the Marlins Ball Park in Miami, Florida.

The event was streamed live on the Power Showcase channel.

The Power Showcase in Miami featured 170 of the world’s best players representing more than 20 countries.

Cajigas hit three home runs in the Home Run Derby, At the All American Game, Cajigas walked away with MVP Award.

He had two singles, one triple, a stolen base, one run scored and three RBI as the American League team won the game.

Doing what works If you had these motivational elements in place but did not stick with the change, that’s still excellent. Now you can decide what worked for you and what didn’t, as you attempted a new behavior.

Most of us don’t get things right on the first try. We live by trial and error. What is effective for others might not work for us.

Feel free to modify your plan as needed. Making a goal public is an effective tool for some people, while others do better quietly working toward a change.

Whatever your goal is, use as many resources as you can find: read books and websites, listen to others stories, make mental notes of what is working, and be supportive of yourself as you do one of the most daunting things a person can do, which is to make a change.

One of the hardest things

to overcome is past mistakes.

Motivational speaker Andy Stanley said experience alone does not make us wiser. In fact, we commonly repeat past behaviors, even if they were unsuccessful. Only by evaluating the experience and making necessary adjustments do we become wiser.

To sum up

If you have started to slip in your changes, take some time to work back through the process to prepare for actions that will last. Find what’s driving you and decide what methods will work best for you going forward.

And, keep focused on seeing yourself the way you want to be.
