Craft beer lovers open first new taproom Iron & Glass will always have 10 rotating beers on draft, one cider and one non-alcoholic ginger brew

The world of craft beer has fast become a phenomenon of its own and the new owners of Iron & Glass in Romeoville are carving out their own niche in it.

Neighbors, friends, and now business partners, Eric Schultz and Colt Snodgrass have a main goal in mind—to share their passion for craft beer while bringing a new, affordable experience to a community that has already begun to embrace them.

Iron & Glass, 632 S. Weber Road, a taproom and bottleshop, is a fairly new concept; one-part liquor store, one-part tasting room where patrons can purchase a unique craft beer, cider or mead of nearly 200 choice varieties; sample a new brew of the 10 to 12 latest and freshest on tap; or both, bottle sharing with those on premise is welcome.

Snodgrass said the pair had seen places in other states for such an “on premise/off premise” type of establishment, but nothing locally.

“With our passion for craft beer, we knew that this was a place we would like to visit and thought we could try to bring the experience here,” said Snodgrass.

ness about three years ago.

“We also saw how prices for craft beer began rising and we want to keep craft affordable for the consumer,” said Snodgrass.

But it wasn’t an immediate win.

After approaching a few different towns and villages, they were met with skepticism over a new concept foreign to most.

“It was a bit discouraging—some just didn’t understand the business

model and just thought we were going to be a rowdy bar,” explained Schultz.

The love for the project had them revisit the idea, both their wives, Maggie Schultz and Christine Snodgrass, also partners in the business continued to brainstorm.

With the open of Romeoville’s first brewery Metal Monkey last year and business connections to the village, the door was open for the idea of Iron & Glass.

“Metal Monkey just opened and Starbucks was selling beer at the time (not any longer); we started thinking this might actually happen; if we don’t do it now, we will never do it; our kids were getting older...so we went back to update our business plan and presented it,” said Schultz.

In December, the husband and wife teams opened Iron & Glass

and have already established a following. As craft beer enthusiasts watch for the latest brew, odds are they will land on the bottleshop’s shelves. Schultz explains they are calling distributers daily to ensure they are well stocked in the latest and greatest—that’s what their passion lies—getting the right beer in the right hands.

“That’s what differentiates us from a brewery,” said Schultz. “A brewery is constantly brewing beer; we are constantly ordering beer. There are different challenges for each—a brewery is more labor intensive; for us we have a conversation every day with people to find the best beer; and what’s new.”

And when it’s hot, it’s gone. Once Iron & Glass posts on Facebook or the app Untappd that something is in stock; a particular batch can be gone in a few hours.

“We are here to educate the community on craft beer to show how much great beer there is available,” said Schultz. We try to be into as much Illinois beer as possible because there is such great local beer but we also want to spotlight everything else that is available in the country.”

In addition to craft beer, wine, cider and mead are also offered.

“All the local fresh harvests really bring up the flavor profiles. Freshness is what you get out of this and that is what matters. We are trying to stay local so that means you are going to get the freshest stuff possible,” said Snodgrass. “We are not pushing one style. There is a beer out there for everyone, if not, there’s a cider. Please come in and taste; find out what you like; we will help you along the way.”

“We have it because we are family friendly; it’s important to us, we both have kids, we want to have a place where families can feel comfortable coming into the store,” said Schultz.

They also are BYOF—that is bring your own food. Bring what you like, take advantage of the WIFI and relax. Every Friday the taproom will also have a food truck onsite.

Martinez receives $500 grant from Mobil ExxonMobil’s Educational Alliance Program awarded $2.2 million in grants in 2016 For the sixth year in a row, representatives of Romeoville Mobil, 135th Street and Illinois Route 53, donated $500 to math and science programs in Valley View School District 365U. The grant was made possible through the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program.

This year’s recipient, Martinez Middle School, will use the money to help supplement the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program and activities.

“Giving back to the local community is something we’re proud of at Romeoville Mobil and Exx-

onMobil,” said Mohammed V. Qurashi, owner and president of the Romeoville Mobil at 135th and Rt. 53.

“By driving success in our schools, we hope to forge a stronger bond with the communities we serve.”

ExxonMobil’s Educational Alliance Program awarded $2.2 million in grants in 2016.

The program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil dealers like Romeoville Mobil with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through grants to neighborhood schools.

We are facing a critical time for voting rights in our country. On January 9, I spoke to the Southland Ministerial Health Network at their Martin Luther King Day Spirit of Excellence Awards about the need to continue the fight for voting rights as the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Not that long ago in this country, African Americans who tried to register to vote and those who would help them register, were locked out of clerks’ offices, or worse, intimidated, beaten, even killed—so that they wouldn’t exercise their right to vote.

The 1965 Voting Rights Act helped end that violent voter suppression.

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King and those who fought for the Voting Rights Act by registering to vote and going to the polls, we must confront the ugly truth that across the country, voting rights are being threatened again. In 2013 the Supreme Court severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving many states wide latitude to restrict access to the polls, which they are doing with enthusiasm. We have yet to see what further damage the Supreme Court will do under the next administration.

Our successes would not have been possible without the help of engaged and involved citizens, civic groups and legislators. Eleven years ago I introduced Early Voting to Illinois, and each election cycle we see significant increases in Cook County residents voting early.

We have also implemented online voter registration, same-day voter registration and expanded our election judge program to include high school students.

This year, we reached a record 3 mil-

lion registered voters in Cook County.

We have worked diligently to ensure the lists are cleaner and more accurate.

But there is still work to do, here and nationally.

Across the country, we must bring back crucial parts of the Voting Rights Act and reverse dangerous decisions on allowing money to flood our political system. It is outrageous that the Supreme Court has said that your influence will, in effect, be determined by how much money you have.

Here in Illinois, we must pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). AVR will save us money be streamlining the process of cleaning the voting rolls and thereby ensuring we have the cleanest rolls possible. Government agencies should harness technology to share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies.

A functional democracy requires voting so the wishes of the electorate are supposed to guide our public policy. When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today: public policy that is simply not what people want. Voters do not want continuing inequality or justice that is determined based on your skin color or your wealth. Dr. King understood this. He understood the relationship between racism, economic inequality and the right to vote. Today our challenge is galvanizing our energy to continue the fight he gave his life for.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DEAR EDITOR, With a voice of gratitude, it is fitting and right to write about the firefighters in Romeoville. They have history with some bad days and some good days.

As a resident for many years, and an active member in our /Romeoville Area Historical Society, I do remember some bad days. There was the explosion of Union Oil (now Citco) in 1984.

There were 17 firefighters killed from Romeoville and the surrounding villages. My pictures on the wall all fell down. My house “shook.” Our Jewel (Spartan Square) had all the windows blown out. There had been an enormous amount of damage done to their building and the surrounding homes.

These past heroic deeds by our fire-

fighters again came to lite at the fire in our Wesglen Subdivision. There was much damage to property – but no personal injury.

At the present time, our former chiefs – Al and Carl keep me reminded of our past. These former chiefs were involved in the 1984 explosion. We now have a chief named Kent, who also has a great sense of community.

In August our former chief Carl lost his beloved wife Phyllis. Our community again demonstrated a “band of brothers and sisters” as we all waited two hours to attend her memorial. I, as a long time resident was proud of the support, respect, and honor given to Phyllis. She was a true “soldier of goodness”.

Our firefighters are solid. Our para-

medics are solid. The paramedics also comfort and empower us, when needed. Their courage is their character. They and our firefighters are the “spokes in our community.”

YES, it does take a Village. It is our Village of Romeoville. Our firefighters, paramedics, policemen and women, and our Leaders Mayor, Trustees etc. make us the BEST OF THE BEST. This writing is a tribute to all our community leaders and residents who are at the forefront. They lift us up and display a light that will NEVER stop.

We are a family community that has solid strength.

Romeoville earns easy win over SPC foe Plainfield South

Just over three minutes into last weeks game against Plainfield South, Romeoville boys basketball coach Marc Howard had seen enough. So he called time out.

“We’ve been working on on our defense, working on stopping the straight down drive,” he said after the game. “We had reverted back to some old habits, but the guys got it.”

Boy did they ever. The Spartans turned it up on both sides of the ball and went onto breeze by Plainfield South 82-34 on Tuesday night, Jan. 10 in a Southwest Prairie Conference matchup at Romeoville.

DeAndre Heckard (20 points) led Romeoville (8-7, 4-2). Fellow junior guard Ibam Padilla (12 points) and junior forward Dontia Johnson (10 points, 5 rebounds) were also in double figures as the Spartans had 13 different people score.

led by junior center Joey Saracco (10 points). The Cougars last SWP game was a 68-67 overtime victory on Jan. 6 over visiting Plainfield East. But after the first quarter they couldn’t do much against Romeoville.

“Romeoville came out ready to play,” Plainfield South coach Tim Boe said. “Marc [Howard] had them prepared and they switched defenses. They’re a talented team and it’ll be interesting to see how they do the rest of the season.

“We have to get better.”

Things actually started well for Plainfield South. There were five ties and five lead changes in the first quarter. Saracco scored the first eight points for the Cougars and his layup with 4:59 left in the opening quarter gave them an 8-7 lead. That prompted Howard to call the time out and switch out of a zone and into a man-to-man defense.

Raiders, RHS’ Hubbs advance to sectional

Bolingbrook started off on fire Saturday at the Oswego East Regional at Parkside Lanes in Aurora with two big games.

While the Raiders couldn’t keep the momentum going, it was good enough to carry them to the sectional round as they finished in third place with a 5,732.

Alex Acosta finished second overall with a 1,325. Steve Stropkovic added a 1,200, Cameron Zulfer had a 1,114 and Matt Zulfer recorded a 1,093.

“It wasn’t the easiest here,” Stropkovic said. “It got pretty rough at the end. But sectionals is at a place we are pretty good at, so we should sweep through them pretty easily.”

“We struggled through the last four games because the lanes were really dry, but we pulled through,” Acosta said. “We pretty much had to throw it down the middle and hope we had an easy

spare to pick up.”

While Acosta finished in second, he was mush more proud of helping the team advance.

“It doesn’t really matter where I finished,” Acosta said. “I just wanted to make it as a team. I didn’t really care what I did as an individual.”

Now the Raiders will look to take the next step and advance to state out of the Plainfield North Sectional Saturday at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.

While Stopkovic made it to state the past two years and Zulfer and Acosta joined him there last year, the Raiders want to make it out as a team this year.

“We should be able to make it down to state,” Stropkovic said.

“Some of the guys who didn’t make it to state are pretty good at Town and Country, so I don’t think it will be all that hard to make it to state. It’s going to be entirely up to spares since that was what saved us the last couSEE ADVANCE PAGE 14

BHS coach helping teach the game right

In the today’s hypersensitive landscape, the game of football is getting a bad rap – especially at the youth level as talks of concussions and other serious injuries threaten the very existence of the sport.

There is at least one local organization and coaching staff that is working to teach the game of football the right way – and so far it seems to be working.

The Patriots Youth Travel Football team has been winning championships, sending players to the top of the high school game and beyond and doing it all with an All-Star class of coaches – all of whom make teaching the right way to play their first priority.

Leading the way in terms of coaching pedigree is former Benedictine All-American and Arena League Hall of Famer Bob McMillen.

McMillen is the only member of the current 12U Patriots staff that has a son on the team – a team that recently won the Pop Warner Super Bowl at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Prior to taking the Patriots to titles, he was a three-time AllAmerican for what was then Illinois Benedictine College, a fullback and linebacker from 1995-2008 in the Arena Football League where he retired as the league’s second all-time leading rusher. He then coached with the Chicago Rush as an assistant and was named head coach in 2010, earning Coach of the Year honors in 2013 before coaching two seasons with the LA KISS, owned by legendary rock stars Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It is relieving,” McMillen said of coaching with the Patriots.

“There is a lot less stress than when you are dealing with professional athletes and having the pressure of winning games for fans and stuff. Being able to come home and teach the game of football to kids is exciting and fun and a breath of fresh air to watch kids develop and get better as the season goes on.

“We tell the parents that we are

not a babysitting service. We are here to teach the game of football and for the kids to get better as the season goes on and if they want to play in high school or even beyond, it has to start at this level.”

Two of those players on the championship team are Downers Grove residents Sal DeLuca and Zach Bluder.

Bluder, the starting center, said the experience of playing for the title was one he will never forget.

“It was a great experience,” Bluder said. “Our coaches told us it was going to be real hard in Florida and the first game was a wakeup call for us and we pushed through it. We have a lot of special players on this team and we work really hard.”

DeLuca agreed that the team had a once in a lifetime experience.

“It was really fun to spend the week in Florida with the team,” DeLuca said. “It was great when we faced the teams because they were a big challenge, but we were the team that won. We train really hard and we had our minds on the games and we were going to be the opponent. We used to goof around a lot and the coaches taught us to make it first that we want to win a championship and not just goof around and it paid off.”

For DeLuca, an offensive and defensive lineman, his play is not all about himself when he is on the field. He said every time he steps on the field, he is playing for the memory of his uncle Salvatore DeLuca – who Sal is named for.

Salvatore was a member of the Downers Grove South football team and was killed in an accident at age 17 in 2001 on the way home from football practice. The Mustangs won the Class 8A state title that season.

“I am trying to be the best I can just like him,” DeLuca said.

“When I first tried on his helmet and jersey, it was inspiring to know he was so good at football and I want to be just like him. It makes me and my family proud.

We lost him at such a young age, that it’s like a younger him is inside me playing football.”

As DeLuca and the other Patriots try and play to their best – they know they are doing so with

“The kids all know where I came from and what I have done, but this was my seventh national championship I won with the Patriots organization. We don’t go out and recruit kids, the kids that come out are the kids that we are going to try to be successful with,” McMillen said. “Being able to play for 13 years and then coach (in the Arena League) may give me a leg up on some coaches, but it is all about teaching the game the right way. That decreases injury and helps kids become better football players.

“A lot of credit has to go to the parents. They know that when you are being taught by a guy who has been there and done that in college and professionally and being successful in the youth programs as a coach, it helps. The kids that sign up, they know who they want to play for.

I stress to parents to do your homework before you sign your kid up for a football league and make sure the coaches that you are trusting your son to play for know what they are talking about. I am not bad mouth any program – but they have to see who will be coaching their son. Is it an armchair dad who has never played the game or is it someone who knows what they are talking about that has been around the game and been around youth football and can teach the proper techniques. We teach proper tackling techniques and a lot of programs just want to see who can hit harder and SEE TEACH PAGE 14

that is the wrong way to do it.

That is how you get your injuries. In the 12 years I have been around youth football, we have only had three concussions and two of them were from a kid hitting the ground.�

McMillen is not the only highly acclaimed coach in the organization as Doug DiFusco, former Nazareth Academy assistant coach and current offensive coordinator at Bolingbrook High School, is the longest tenured Patriots’ coach at 11 years in the organization and hasn’t had a son playing since 2009. “We are all just coaches who love to develop kids and make sure they are prepared for high school, but we want ours to jump off the page when they get to high school,� DiFusco said. “That means kids who are freshmen, who if they are needed to or given the opportunity, can ADVANCE FROM PAGE 12 ple games. There were two more ties, however, the last one at 13-13 when senior forward Devin Smith (5 points) scored on a layup for the Cougars with 48 seconds left in the quarter.

But Johnson answered with a layup of his own 17 seconds later to put the Spartans ahead for good. That 15-13 score was the same at the end of the first quarter. Romeoville then opened the second quarter on a 14-0 blitz for a 16-0 total run. Junior guard Kahil Blakney (7 points total) and Padilla combined for 12 of those 14 points.

DiFusco said the program’s success in turning out quality athletes has been the reason for the growth of the program to communities outside its Naperville base. “I think the most important thing that we see are coaches not doing it the right way and what we are seeing now because of the success of the program is we have kids from all over,� he said. “We have kids from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Joliet, Oswego, Aurora, Plainfield, Chicago, Wheaton, you name it. We have kids coming from all over to play Patriots football because the see that we develop kids the right way. We teach the fundamentals the same from when they are six-years-old.�

That influx of other communities makes playing for the Patriots more fun for the athletes. “It is real fun to have people

from everywhere,� Bluder said. “Every year I make a lot of new friends on the team and that makes it an even better experience.�

Both DiFusco and McMillen know that influx of players is because parents are seeing the kids being taught the right way and while they are successful, it is not all about the wins and losses. “They go hand in hand. If you are winning, you are teaching the kids the right way to play football and if you are teaching kids the right way to play football, you are winning,� McMillen said. “It is not just the 12U team that won nationals, we are all successful. “It is awesome for us to see kids that we coached for years have success in high school or get a college scholarship. It is great to know that something I did early in that kid’s life allowed him to not only go out and be a great football player, but a great human being.�

This will be Hubbs’ fourth trip to sectionals as he hopes to get to state for the first time in his final attempt.

Heckard had 13 points in the quarter, including a trio of 3-pointers. The Cougars committed 13 turnovers in the third quarter and had 27 in the game. “At halftime coach just hold us to go out, have fun and we came out and got the W,� Heckard said. “What I like about our team is that we have chemistry. We just have to play defense, our offense will come off of that.�

The Romeoville starters went out of the game for good with 1:46 to play in the third quarter.

We can score, we just know we have to keep putting it out there on the defensive end.�

2017 Great Read kicks off with Feb. 2 gala This year’s event celebrates 20 years of Harry Potter

The 2017 Great Read community literacy program will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book with Harry Potter costume and team trivia contests at its February 2 Opening Gala.

The event at the Joliet Public Library/Black Road Branch kicks off a month of special events including an art contest and a Potterthemed family magic show.

The Great Read is a consortium of public and private organizations promoting literacy, reading, conversation, and commu-

nity in Plainfield and surrounding southwest suburban partner communities since 2004.

Great Read community members are encouraged to read about Harry Potter and take part in the many programs scheduled in February at the 10 partner libraries.

The numbers border on fantastical — more than 500 million copies sold of the seven core books and $7.7 billion in movie sales. Not bad for a boy wizard who didn’t even know he had magical powers.

Yet, the numbers alone cannot begin to reflect the incalculable impact on world culture that Harry Potter has had since he and his two best friends searched for the “Sorcerer’s Stone” (or “Philosopher’s Stone, in England) in 1997.

State of Village - growth up, crime down ‘In 2017, Bolingbrook is considered to be one of the premier places to do business’

Emphasizing diversity and its strong business and residential base, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar boasted of increases in job growth, industrial, retail and manufacturing as well as a decrease in crime during his annual State of the Village address.

The Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the 2017 luncheon Jan. 12 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club where Claar spoke to a full house.

“In 2017, Bolingbrook is considered to be one of the premier places to do business.” said Claar. “We are a great location for retail; we have a great selection of residential from single family homes to those that range in price at the million dollar mark. We are diverse in our church community, our residential community, our retail community; and our schools, public and private.

We are diverse in our public village board and in our appointments and that is something we strive hard to do and have been doing for years.”

Claar outlined new initiatives large and small, noting the launch this year of a new Bolingbrook app and new website to be unveiled soon, and all completed in-house to keep costs down.

Streamlining services this year, the village, following state law to consolidate 911 centers, moved its services to Wescom, saving $300,000 annually.

In addition, when Will County had to shut down electronic recycling, the village responded by partnering with Groot, its recycling company, to pick up the slack, now offering curb-side service to residents.

Falling an additional two percent this year, Bolingbrook’s crime rate is the lowest it has been in 20 years.

Claar credits this to the strength of the Police Department as well as to its rental inspection programs, zero tolerance policies and new apartment/property managers dedicated to providing and maintaining quality apartments. He also noted all marked squad police cars are equipped with dashboard cameras and tasers.

The Emerald Ash Borer continues to have its effect on the village,

with 9,000 ash trees cut down to date. The village replanted 6,000 new trees at a cost of $5 million and anticipates 2,000 more need to be cut down and additional trees to be planted.

Claar spoke of the success of the Rocket Ice Arena, calling it one of his greatest accomplishments throughout his years in office, noting it’s history as a swimming pool was unsuccessful. Rocket Ice, he said, now is not only profitable

but brings in thousands of people to town, with its own Chicago Blackhawks workshops and noted celebrities on ice.

Claar took the time to settle rumors regarding property taxes.

“Contrary to popular belief, we do not give any type of tax breaks,” said Claar. “...When I came into office, 22 percent of it came to the village; it’s down now to just shy of 10 percent. We got away from that so school, library, and park districts could have the funds to provide those great programs.”

In addition, “yes,’ he reported, “We have debt. The village is 51 years old and we made a decision years ago to build the infrastructure needed to keep and attract residents and businesses here. The village built Remington Boulevard and Crossroads Parkway parallel to I-55 to attract all these great businesses we have. We now have 35 million square-feet of office, industrial and manufacturing built, that is a tremendous number. When we came into office that was 115,000 square-feet.”

Part of that debt also factors in a new storm water management system that replaced 138 retention ponds and an interchange at Boughton Road, among other things.

Claar said the village is comfortable in its plan to pay off that debt and anyone can view that plan at village hall.

Paying out future public pensions are still a concern for the village as the community ages and more fire and police employees will

need to collect. He noted revenues are not gaining at the same rate as the three percent yearly increase expected to fund pensions.

“Their payroll goes up but the system can’t sustain itself and Springfield is not doing anything about it,” said Claar.

More than 20 companies have made Bolingbrook their corporate headquarters and its top 30 employers have more than 10,000 employees. In addition, Turano bakery is expected to expand in 2017 and Hendrickson will be breaking ground in 2017, bringing with them 175 employees. This year saw Tony’s Fresh Market replaces the vacant Food for Less store, a welcome addition to the community.

In addition, Michaels is expected to return to Bolingbrook in 2017.

Claar also spoke of both the recent national and upcoming local election (for which he is running for another term as mayor), calling on candidates to uphold their integrity and voters to be wary.

“We just finished a national election that divided this country greatly; I’ve been told in any election, people start getting fast and loose with facts and honesty is the first thing to fall to the wayside.”

He maintained that he has never run a negative campaign and doesn’t intend to start.

However, in light of recent negative campaigning of his opponents) he noted that everyone should be careful of what they say and do, calling attention to a document every candidate signs that asks them to represent the truth.

We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC? BEN DEAR BEN,

First, congratulations on being debt-free and new parents. Happy New Year to you all!

In most states, the only upfront cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other fees to consider, as long as the cost of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday. Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

mon sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.

You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be “no.” Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change. When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him $350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and

hit you up for cash anytime.

Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial counseling course. Be gentle when you talk to him, and let him know it hurts to see him struggling. But let him know, too, it’s his responsibility to work through his debts and take care of his own finances!

How seniors can simplify everyday tasks Seniors may find that living smaller is akin to living simpler The ability to perform everyday tasks is something many people take for granted. But as men and women approach or exceed retirement age, many may start to struggle with chores and tasks they have performed for decades.

Physical limitations are a common side effect of aging. But such limitations do not have to prove too big a hurdle for seniors to clear. In fact, there are many ways for seniors to simplify everyday tasks while maintaining their independence.

• Embrace technology. Even the proudest Luddites cannot deny technology’s potential to make seniors’ lives easier. Seemingly simple tasks like shopping for groceries and vacuuming a home can be difficult for seniors with dwindling or limited mobility.
