The hill is alive with music!

The Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center concert series is in full swing this summer.

Every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. stop by the village town center, 375 Briarcliff Road, for a concert on the hill with musical guests of all genres.

Designed as a means for neighbors to meet neighbors and enjoy a free community event, the concert series continues each year at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center.

New this year is a Raviniastyle contest inspired by regulars who come out to the events with a spread--pack an impressive picnic and each week the band selects a group that present the best picnic set-up. Prizes include a 50th Anniversary insulted picnic basket with fun prizes inside.

Shows are sponsored by the Bolingbrook Park District in partnership with AMITA Health Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Final Say took the stage to a delighted crowd this past Wednesday and got the crowd up and moving. Next week, Five Guys named Moe will rock the crowd.

State’s stalemate alarms area voters Budget concerns top legislative town hall By laura katauskas staff reporter

As lawmakers battle over the budget impasse, local legislators and constituents are left to grapple with the ramifications of a stalemate.

Local villages and agencies are bracing for cuts to a system ran on state funding affecting everything from daycare to funds for the disabled.

“We have already been notified that some grants we were expecting are being frozen,” said Bolingbrook Village Attorney Jim Boan, who did not have further details.

Meanwhile Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democraticled legislature are showing no signs of progress as of press time.

In response to the state government shutdown, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said she supported legislation that appropriates funds to keep government services operating for another 30 days.

“After the governor vetoed a budget that protected middleclass families and funded essential services, we found a way to make sure that these programs could be sustained,” she said in a release.

“Even though this bill was limited, it still provided support for some key services for our seniors, veterans, and disabled.”

House Bill 4190 was voted on last week in response to the veto of the state budget. It would provide $2 billion in the next month to crucial programs, such as the Community Care Program, GPS monitoring for sexual predators, addiction treatment, rehabilitation services for the disabled, and services at the state’s veterans’ homes. The temporary budget failed on a vote of 67-1-32.

“My Republican colleagues decided to vote against this critical piece of legislation and now have put the lives of middle-class families at risk,” Manley added.

“It is extremely disappointing that so many of my colleagues allowed politics to cloud their judgment and avoided the opportunity to show bipartisan support for these

crucial services that, in many cases, keep people alive.”

To stand in solidarity with state employees who may not be receiving their paychecks, and also with those whose access to state services are in jeopardy due to the government shutdown, Manley and some of her colleagues in the House vowed not to cash their legislative paychecks until a state budget has been adopted.

“Illinois government has come to this shameful point because of a governor who is supremely dedicated to shafting the middleclass and our state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Manley.

Prior to the July 1 budget deadline, Will County voters were looking for answers during a legislative town hall meeting held on June 29.

Manley, along with state sens. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, hosted the meeting at the Bolingbrook-Fountaindale Library. The format was meant to be an informal opportunity for community members to ask legislators questions about government at the state level.

Illinois’ budget was on the minds of many in attendance.

The officials spoke of a strained legislature that sorely needed to find a compromise, fielding questions from residents from Bolingbrook to Shorewood.

“The government has to work with a budget as does every other business or household,” area resident Cathy Weiss said. “We need checks and balances. There needs to be accountability for what money comes in and what money goes out.”

Weiss added that s an independent audit agency receiving state money could help control the spending.

As political climate dictates, finger pointing was relative with general comments from constituents and the legislators themselves.

Rauner received criticism for vetoing the budget.

Others at the meeting voiced their support for term limits in order to end what many in the crowded room considered the current “failed” way of doing business.

As the outcome of the state’s stalemate continues to play out, representatives from area social service agencies were on hand to express their concerns.

Patricia Bolden of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, representing one of the largest homeless shelters in the area, questioned how the agency can continue with potential drastic cuts to their funding.

Manley told Bolden that the

legislators at the town hall meeting are fighting for her and individuals who do not have a voice in the community.

“This is where we have to come together and look at spending and make cuts in the right places,” Manley said. “The government is not a business. We are a service provider, and it is the right of citizens to count on us to give the services they need.”

Just how that is done, is yet to be decided.

“Everyone in the Senate is fighting for their community,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We have a very diverse district, with one end wanting one thing and the other end another. But I don’t speak to the audience, I speak to the truth.”

Bolingbrook resident Steve Prodehl asked the panel of lawmakers if they are in favor of budget cuts and where they would like to see those cuts made.

“Are you in favor of raising taxes, because that’s what we’re going to have to do,” he stated.

On government spending, Manley said state revenues have been stable for too long, as costs continue to rise.

“They’ve used pensions like credit cards, and now we have a big problem,” she said.

Though definitive answers weren’t given, the officials pointed out that they were holding these town halls to hear residents input and made a commitment to bring their concerns to the forefront.

“We continue to make spending cuts and who we are as legislators are the people who have come to serve you—our community,” McAsey said.

Though McGuire likened the legislature to drunks careening from problem to problem, he still is trying to remain optimistic for the future.

“Though the obvious problem, it is important to note that work still is getting done,” he said.

He knows that people want predictability and stability.

“The retiree wants to know if he or she can buy a car,” McGuire said.

“The university president wants to know if they can build a building.

The CEO wants to know if they can invest.”

Bertino-Tarrant agreed.

“We are all trying to do the right thing,” she said. “You have to understand that it is a hard process.”

McAsey noted work done to negotiate an agreement with area manufacturers and landfills in handling electronics recycling, finding a solution for the immediate future. In addition, she spoke of the constant battle to create further dialogue regarding the heroin crisis, creating a medical formulation designed to deter abuse.

The next time Bolingbrook Police Department’s K9 officer, Johan, goes out on a job, he’ll be a lot safer thanks to the generous donation of a ballistic vest by a Massachusetts nonprofit and a Michigan-based manufacturer.

Bolingbrook’s K9 officer has been awarded a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s and an anonymous sponsor that provided $950 toward the vest. Johan is a 2-year old Belgian Malinois originally from Holland, and purchased from Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana.

Johan was certified in narcotics detection, patrol work and tracking in July 2014, and has been protecting the residents of Bolingbrook ever since. Johan is also approaching the one-year anniversary of a very productive partnership with his handler, officer Jason O’Hara, a nine-year

veteran of the Bolingbrook Police Department. O’Hara attended and played college football at Illinois Wesleyan University prior to going to work for the department.

According to the Bolingbrook Police Department, when he’s not working the street, Johan enjoys obedience and agility exercises, and trying to earn food treats from his police officer teammates, who say Johan still very much acts like a puppy most times. At home, he enjoys wrestling with fellow canines Moose and Paulie.

Vested Interest is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, Massachusetts. Its mission is to provide bullet and stab protective

vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Each vest costs $1,050 and has a five-year warranty.

The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for K9 officers.

Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest has provided more than 1,420 law enforcement dogs in 49 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of more than $1.3 million.

Known for its work in mentoring teens in the community, Heart Haven OutReach is preparing to host its primary fundraiser, the 12th annual Christmas in July.

The event will be held July 15 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive, Bolingbrook.

The nonprofit organization, fondly referred to as H2O, has been providing support and mentoring to struggling teens in the greater Bolingbrook/Romeoville area for more than 10 years.

The organization was originally founded by community leaders to curb suspensions and expulsions in the high schools through support groups, one-on-one mentoring, character education programs and healthy recreational activities.

According to staff, the organization has reached out and transformed the lives of almost 2,000 teens since opening its doors.

The event is meant to provide fun and entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.

Golf registration will begin at 11 a.m. with a cook-out lunch served under the tent. A “Best Ball” golf Tournament will take place on the state of the art, 18-hole Arthur Hill designed Bolingbrook Golf Course with a 12:30 p.m. shot-gun start. The first place foursome will go home with an elegant “crystal” traveling trophy. Besides golf, there will be plenty of contests, prizes and fun on many of the holes during the day.

Individuals not inclined to golfing can still support H20 by attending the social hour and dinner event following the golf tournament. For $50 before the event or $65 at the door, tickets are available for a night of socializing,

eating and networking. Tickets to the dinner event are included in the golf registration, which is $150 per person.

The evening’s activities will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour hosted

by Gordon Biersch, Nancy’s Pizza and Southern Wine. An ice sculpture Martini Luge and a popcorn station also will be available during the social hour. Guests will then be invited to stroll down the Main Street of Restaurants for a “Taste of Bolingbrook.” Included in the Main Street “Taste” are such favorites as Eggs Inc., Olive Garden, Tailgaters Sports-Bar, Bar Louie, Ashbury’s, Longhorn Steak House and The Nest. A fabulous dessert station with Andy’s Frozen Custard, a chocolate dipping fountain, a Candy Land station, and a coffee bar round out the “Taste.”

Christmas in July would not be complete without presents and will also include a silent auction, live auction and a pick-a-prize auction, where guests can bid on items to start their Christmas shopping early.

Some of the items being auctioned off will be sought after Chicago sports tickets, restaurant and spa experiences, concert tickets and sports memorabilia.

Funds raised will help continue the work of H20, a safe haven for high school teens experiencing struggles and challenges, such as loneliness, relationship issues, low self-esteem, bullying, anger issues or problems at school. H2O is a place where teens can come to talk through their problems, build supportive, caring relationships and learn that they do not have to face their struggles alone.

Put each categorized pile into a file folder labeled with an appropriate verb (Call, Review, Discuss), and put them where you’ll attend to them, such as a desk or corner of the kitchen counter.

Nest, make time to process each folder by creating an appointment on your calendar. Block out a half hour or an hour to focus on one folder at a time,

Bolingbrook graduate taylor tuck is one of seven former women’s basketball players to file a lawsuit.

A lawsuit filed by seven former players from the University of Illinois women’s basketball team has connections to the Voyager Media coverage area.

The federal lawsuit, filed in Urbana, Illinois on July 1, 2015 against the university, accuses the school’s head coach Matt Bollant and former assistant Mike Divilbiss of creating a racially hostile environment.

Divilbiss resigned in May after several of the players’ families called on the university to investigate.

The former players, which include exBolingbrook players Amarah Coleman and Taylor Tuck as well as ex-Maine South athlete Jacqui Grant are suing for $10 million in damages from the university in the racial discrimination lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Urbana, IL. The suit accuses Bollant and Divilbiss of violating their civil rights.

The other plaintiffs are Alexis Smith, Nia Oden, Sarah Livingston and Taylor Gleason.

Tuck and Smith graduated after last season, while the other five quit the team.

The lawsuit states that the coaches held segregated practices singling out black players.

It states that the coaches called these practices the “dog pound,” indirectly labeling the black Plaintiffs, including Tuck, as dogs.

It states that the coaches threatened the relegation of the white players, including Grant, to the “dog pound” in retaliation for them continuing to associate with and

support of the black players against the racially hostile environment, as well as labeling the white players as “mascots.”

The lawsuit also states that the coaches instituted segregated travel room assignments, prohibiting white players and black players from rooming together.

The suit states that the coaches publicly and/or privately addressed Coleman, Tuck and the other black plaintiffs during games, practices and/or meetings in a manner that was designed and/or intended to embarrass, denigrate, demoralize and/or demean them in front of others to discourage them from continuing to participate in the program.

It also states that the coaches publicly and/or privately addressed Grant and the other white plaintiffs during games, practices and/or meetings in a manner that was designed and/or intended to embarrass, denigrate, demoralize and/or demean them in front of others in retaliation for their association and/or support for their black teammates who were being treated discriminatorily and to discourage them from associating with and/or supporting black teammates to discourage them from continuing to participate in the program.

The suit says the coaches labeled black players as “toxic” and “unintelligent”, undisciplined ‘west-side ghetto’ streetball players on account of their race and stereotyping a community of origin.”

It also states the coaches singled out black players as “crabs” because one crab can climb out of a bucket, but more than one pull each other down and none can get out.

The suit also accuses athletic director Mike Thomas of knowing about the infractions and taking no steps to address them.

The accolades keep coming for Westmont standout senior shortstop Charlie Donovan.

Before the end of the season, Donovan got word that he had been selected as Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois for baseball.

“I got an email letting me know that he had gotten the Gatorade award as the best player in the state of Illinois

and that’s just a great honor,” said Westmont coach D.J. Cocks. “The top player in the state no matter what class. It’s just an honor for him as a player and for us as a program to have that kind of recognition. It’s just amazing. I’m really proud of the way he is as player and as a person; he totally deserves it, but what an honor, no doubt.”

Donovan, who has been tabbed the Voyager Media Player of the Year for the third straight year, hit .484 with

seven homers and 33 RB, 64 runs scored and 42 stolen bases.

“I didn’t really expect it, but it was a very humbling thing,” Donovan said of the Gatorade award. “I think it’s just kind of a result of all the hard work I put in and the dedication I put in towards the game.

“There’s a bunch of other kids that could have got that award and they were deserving, but I guess all I could do at the end of the day is go out and have fun playing the game that I love.”

He was drafted in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers last month, but that selection likely reflected the fact that he stated prior to the draft he intended to fulfill his commitment to play collegiately at Michigan.

“I’m looking forward to going to the University of Michigan,” he said. “The draft is not in the picture anymore.”

Connor Brandon He had a .404 average with 42 hits for JCA. He tallied 20 extra base hits, with 12 doubles, 6 triples and 2 home runs.

Plainfield East junior hit .438 with nine doubles, four homers and 32 RBI. Also went 5-3 on the mound with 45 strikeouts.

Junior catcher hit.388 with an OBP of .452 to lead Plainfield Central.

“He has come up with countless big hits all year,” Central coach Jon Rosner said. “He has played great behind the dish.”

Charlie’s brother, he broke the Westmont single-season school record for home runs (10) while driving in a team-high 42 runs, hitting .464 and stealing 22 bases.

Drake Fellows The JCA junior lost only one game all season, a nine-inning loss to Lemont in the playoffs, to nine wins.

He posted one save on the season, while having a .575 ERA, a .753 WHIP, 98 strikeouts and only 11 walks.

Sam Ferri Ferri, a junior, has verbally committed to Arizona State, one of the most highly acclaimed baseball programs in the country. The threeyear starter was Notre Dame’s top hitter with a .379 average.

Easton Frisby Plainfield South pitcher went 6-2 with a 1.45 ERA and 38 strikeouts.

Josh Garner Plainfield North junior came up with big hits throughout the season, including the playoffs. He batted .419

with a .489 OBP, drove home 34 runs and had 14 doubles.

Cody Grosse Joliet West middle infielder posted a .485 average and .557 OBP this season, while hitting 12 doubles and four triples. He drove in 28 while stealing 10 bases and scoring 40 runs.

Conor Hayes The Benet senior lefty went 6-2 on the mound this season. He hit .322 for the Redwings.

Connor Hickey The senior center fielder and twotime all-ESCC selection led Benet in hitting each of his three varsity seasons, including a .385 average in 2015. He’ll be attending the University of Illinois-Chicago and playing baseball there.

Zach Jarosz Leadoff batter for Plainfield North hit .366 with an OBP of .444 and 11 stolen bases. He scored 48 runs with seven doubles and 17 RBI.

Matt Jaskowiak Bolingbrook pitcher and third baseman batted .467 with a home run and five doubles on the year. On the mound he was 2-2, with a pair of

complete games and a shutout. In 38 2/3 innings, he had an ERA of 3.52 and tallied 40 strikeouts.

He led the Raiders in batting average, complete games, shutouts and ERA and was second on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

The senior pitcher-outfielder came up big for Downers North throughout the year. He finished 5-4 on the hill with a 2.77 ERA . He hit .343 for the year.

Romeoville senior posted 40 hits on the season including 10 doubles, for a .402 average. He stole 20 bases. In the Spartans’ playoff win, he went 3-for-4 with a home run and pair of doubles and struck out 11 on the mound.

A junior catcher for Downers South, Oriente hit a whopping .560, set a new school record for the most hits in a season (61) and tied the single-season school records for most doubles (15) and triples (eight) while striking out only three times this season.

Mike McGee Oakland (MI) recruit and Plainfield East senior batted .365 with 10 doubles, 11 RBI and 25 runs scored.

Zach Parker Parker, a senior two-year team captain and two-year All-CSL South pick, hit .374 and was Maine South’s leader in RBI (23), triples (5) and onbase percentage (.517).

Shane Ritter University of Iowa-bound senior pitcher went 5-3 with four saves, 99 strikeouts and a .689 ERA for Plainfield South.

Christian Sanchez Minooka senior was team leader at the plate and on the hill. Offensively,

he batted .500 on the season, with 47 hits, 25 RBI and 29 runs scored.

On the bump, he posted a 5-1 record with a save, a 1.34 ERA and a .908 WHIP.

Hank Schau Schau posted a 7-3 record and a 1.42 ERA.

Kyle Strepek A senior ace from Plainfield North, Strepek went 9-0 with a 1.58 ERA and 94 strikeouts for the sectional champs.

Batted .361 with seven doubles and 27 RBI.

Christos Tountas Tountas batted .375 for Niles West.

Marquette Bank awards scholarships to area teens Two Valley View high school students will receive a jumpstart to funding their college education thanks to the Marquette Bank Education Foundation Scholarship Program.

Locally-owned Marquette Bank continued its 49-year tradition of awarding scholarships to local graduating seniors. In honor of Marquette Bank’s 70th Anniversary, the Marquette Bank Education Foundation Scholarship Program awarded the largest number of scholarships to date, presenting 60 students from Chicago-area schools with individual scholarships of $2,500 for a total amount of $150,000.

Melissa Moy of Bolingbrook High School, who is headed to the University of Michigan, and Rachel Fox of Romeoville High School, who plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, were both awarded a scholarship.

The scholarships were funded by the Marquette Bank Education

Foundation and were awarded to students recommended by their guidance counselors and principals.

“The students receiving these scholarships have exceeded the volunteer service requirements set by their individual high schools showing their commitment to service and to making a difference.

Marquette Bank is proud to help them as they continue on to further their education,” said George Moncada, president and CEO of Marquette Bank.

Since 1967, almost $2.9 million has been awarded to more than 1,500 high school seniors. Students are selected based on financial need, scholastic achievement and a record of volunteer service in their respective communities.

The program is part of the Marquette Neighborhood Commitment, where each quarter the bank focuses on a different area of need, including shelter, hunger, education, and health and wellness.

leads to another straight hole, the 11th, which is a tough fairway to hit and has a tree on the left side of the fairway, blocking shots that are on the left side of the fairway or in the rough.

That leads to a downhill approach shot at the par-4 12th that has water on the front right of the green. More water comes into play at the par-3 13th as it covers the right and front portions of the green.

The 14th is a tricky par-5 as shots right can end up in the trees, while shots left can lead to block approach shots. The 15th is a dogleg right that has plenty of room to bail out to the left, making it a longer hole, or you can play close to the water on the right and have a much shorter approach.

That sets up a spectacular couple of holes. The 16th is a par-3 that has the lake in the background but doesn’t really come into play. The bunkers in front of both sides of the green do come into play though.

Then comes the 17th hole, which is a dogleg left par-5 that runs along the lake. The green is surprisingly right along the lake and any shot that goes long, or even is coming into the green fast, could go into the water. It is great to take a moment on the hole and enjoy the scenery on the hole.

The 18th hole goes back to the

clubhouse and is a difficult hole with bunkers all around the fairway and green. A good drive can easily end up in a fairway bunker.

Overall, the course is a joy to play.

It offers a challenge as even from the white tees it has a 128 slope.

The course plays fair tee to green, but the greens can be challenging with the slopes and speed. They do you no favors with some of the pin placements, either, as I saw many good puts run 5-10 feet by the hole, which can become frustrating.

In April you can play the course for $49 during the week and $59 on the weekend. It goes up to $69-89 in the spring season and $75-109 in the summer, which goes from June 5-Sept. 27.

With the difficult greens and a lot of guests playing the course, it can take some time to play. Our round took five hours. The best bet would be to stay the night there and get an early bird tee time and save some money, as it is pricey in peak times.

If you are able to go in the spring or fall, it offers a great deal if the weather cooperates.

If you are a golfer who likes great views and/or challenging greens, this is your course. I would recommend this course as a mustplay for many golfers, but for those who struggle on the greens, I would recommend improving first to get a full enjoyment out of the round.
