Santa makes appearance at Mosaic Lutheran Church Santa and one of his elves surprised the children of Mosaic Lutheran Church. All enjoyed cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. Candy cane treats were handed out to each child after their visit with Santa. Santa and his elf were in
attendance for pictures and to hear wishes from all the children. “We are proud to provide fun activities for our children to enhance the experience they have not only during worship, but also as a part of our fellowship. We would like to express our appreciation and
gratitude towards all the volunteers who helped make this experience special for the children,” said Pastor Michael Nelson. Mosaic Lutheran Church is currently located at First Presbyterian Church, 180 N. Weber Road.
Manley seeks ideas for legislation from area residents To be responsive to the needs and issues facing local families, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is asking her constituents to contact her with any legislative ideas. “Our state is currently facing serious financial issues, which is why I am looking for the help from the people who live in my district to get Illinois back on track,” Manley said. “As their representative it is my responsibility to protect the programs and services that they rely upon, while also ensuring that our government runs efficiently.”
As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Manley has pushed for cuts in wasteful government spending and new laws to protect the taxpayers. This year she has sponsored several pieces of legislation to make state government more transparent, including House Bill 675, which would prevent the double taxation of certain income for Illinois residents. Currently, if an Illinois resident earns income from another state then that person is required to pay taxes in both states under certain circumstances. To protect
the tax payers this affects, Manley is working to ensure that only the wages earned in Illinois are taxed. “I remain committed to finding solutions to our state’s struggles, which is why I urge area residents to contact me with their ideas,” Manley added. “If interested, they have the opportunity to play a vital role in the legislative process.” For more information, or to provide a legislative idea, contact Manley’s full-time constituent service office at 815-725-2741 or email RepManley@gmail.com.

Romeoville police share holiday spirit Shop with a Cop benefits 66 local children By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

Often times adults need reminders of the true meaning of Christmas and for those helping spread holiday cheer for Romeoville families this weekend, it was alive and well. It’s easy for kids to think of presents and Christmas and about what they want. But it became a common theme, during a shopping spree afforded to them by the Romeoville Police
Department and its donors, to put others before themselves. It was the likes of not only 16-year-olds but 7 and 8-yearolds too, opting to pick out presents for family members rather than just themselves. Commander Rob Fetzer joked he had to make sure the children chose a present for themselves. “It’s just a great thing to be able to be a part of and a way to give back to the community,” said Fetzer. For its third year, the Fraternal Order of Police coordinate efforts to help families in need do a little holiday shopping. Officer John Allen, who has spearheaded the event, reported the annual Shop with a Cop event held at Wal-Mart, were able to take 66 children out a $100 shopping spree.
Through donations from the Fraternal Order of Police, Romeoville Emergency Management Agency, Citizens Police Academy and local business owners, the police department was able to make Christmas a little brighter by adding a few presents under the tree. Allen said it was another eye-opening moment, when customers came into the store, saw what they were doing and decided to donate on the spot. “It’s very heartwarming to see the generosity of the community,” said Allen. “We’ve had more volunteers than ever, more donations and just the idea of giving back is here. That’s what Christmas is all about and we are seeing it happen here. It’s just amazing.”

The spirit of Christmas is strong in Bolingbrook, as the 17th annual Shop with a Cop event took place this past week. The Bolingbrook Police Department teamed up with Meijer Store in the annual event Dec. 16 at Meijer, 755 E. Boughton Road, Bolingbrook.
More than 100 Bolingbrook children were given a chance at a shopping spree thanks to Meijer who donated $50 gift cards to each participant, continuing a successful community outreach program, which was established with their initial store in Illinois, also located in Bolingbrook. Meijer Store Director Michael Hellgeth and Assistant Pam Willis played instrumental roles to make the day an overwhelming success, also providing free gift wrapping, food and drinks for all of the participants, said Commander Mike Rompa. “Numerous Bolingbrook Police Department employees, their family members and Explorer Post #38 combined their efforts to make the holiday brighter for all,” said Rompa. “The event brought the community together and enhanced positive relationships between members of the police department and the selected Bolingbrook students.” Bolingbrook Public Safety Director Tom Ross and Meijer Corporate Officials were also in attendance and were overwhelmed with the positive interaction. Ross stated this program is essential for all involved and thanked Meijer for their continued support.

Courthouse design unveiled to county board $225 million financing plan to be discussed next month By Jonathan Samples Bugle Staff
sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers
Architecture firm Wight & Company recently presented concept plans to the Will County Board for a proposed judicial complex that includes a new 10-story county courthouse in downtown Joliet. The new courthouse would be built at the intersection Ottawa and Jefferson streets and replace the current facility, which county officials say is outdated and unable to meet the needs of a growing
population. Plans include the construction of an adjacent four-story office building that would house the court clerk, state’s attorney, public defender and probation departments. When the current courthouse was built in 1969, the population of Will County was around 250,000. There are now 700,000 residents in the area and that number is projected to increase to 1.2 million over the next 30 years, according to the county officials. The current courthouse, located at 14 Jefferson St., contains 23 courtrooms, but board members
say it lacks adequate space and does not meet minimum standards for safety and security set by the Illinois Supreme Court. Will County currently has 35 judges, with one vacancy, who handle 80,000 cases each year. The new courthouse and judicial complex would contain between 30 and 36 courtrooms, while a satellite courthouse in the northern portion of the county would house several more. “As a local attorney and frequent user of the courthouse, I see firsthand the importance of getting these projects underway and completed as soon as

Valley View looks at new law reforming discipline Legislation prohibits zero tolerance policies By laura katauskas Bugle Staff
sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers
The Valley View School District is beginning to evaluate the ramifications of a progressive new law that prohibits zero tolerance in schools. The new law will not go into effect until September 2016 but takes sweeping action to make
suspensions and expulsions a last result in the state’s schools. The law was signed into effect by Gov. Rauner late this summer. In a recent public meeting, the Valley View School district took a look at what this will entail for the school district. The Gun-Free Act of 1994, which came to be as a result of the Columbine school shooting, led to national zero tolerance policies regarding weapons in schools.
However, policies began to include other incidences as well including drug use, violence smoking and other school disruptions. The idea behind the policies were to maintain a safe school climate by removing “problem students.” According to the Illinois State Board of Education end-of-year reports in 2013, public school suspension rates increased 56 percent and expulsion rates more than doubled in Illinois from 1991 to 2007. It also showed a higher increase for minority students.

Visible Learning receives national recognition Corwin Press visited three VVSD schools earlier this week to interview students Based on its recent efforts to implement high-impact “Visible Learning” instructional practices, Valley View School District 365U has been asked to serve as a model district for other school districts across the country. A team from Corwin Press visited three VVSD schools earlier this week to record interviews with students, faculty and administrators who have truly embraced the Visible Learning research to adjust their practice to best impact student learning. The video will be used in Visible Learning professional development as more and more school districts nationwide begin to recognize the power Visible Learning has on impacting student growth and achievement. “This means a lot for our district and community because we are truly being recognized as a Visible Learning school district,”
said VVSD Executive Director for 6-12 Educational Services Karen Flories. “We are extremely proud to be able to help support the work of Visible Learning throughout the country.” Visible Learning, which is a 2009 publication based upon research by John Hattie, compiles tens of thousands of studies involving over a quarter of a billion students to best identify what has the greatest impact on student learning. The goal of Valley View’s Visible Learning work, and the mantra of Visible Learning as a whole, is to create teachers who see learning through the eyes of their students and students who see themselves as their own teachers. Valley View has used this research as a catalyst to drive the development and support to administrators and educators in the district. “It was truly exciting to see the incredibly hard work and
targeted development everyone has put into our Visible Learning journey captured on film,” Flories said. “The footage they shot might serve as an example of a best practice in action. It might be an example of how we get kids to internalize what it means to be a good learner. It might be about how a teacher is reflecting on Visible Learning practices or how a building admin has a vision for their staff.” VVSD will receive the raw footage as well as the polished copy of the training video. Plans call for utilizing the information to help future VVSD teachers and administrators better understand Visible Learning while also having an opportunity to see the research in action. “Even though Valley View is a national leader inVisible Learning implementation, we still have enormous opportunities ahead of us as we continue to grow,” Flories added. “Our work will continue to focus on using Visible Learning to guide us to identify what works best in improving and impacting student learning.”
Statistics show that despite suspensions and expulsions, violence in schools has remained constant. Voices of Youth in Chicago, a proponent of SB 100, reports that students who are suspended or expelled are: six times more likely to repeat a grade; five times more likely to drop out; and three times more likely to come into contact with the juvenile justice system. SB 100 will now prohibit any zero tolerance policies and require school districts to provide professional development to
school officials for more effective classroom management and culturally responsive discipline. Suspensions and expulsions would only be used in extreme situations and if a student is considered to pose a threat to school safety. If students are suspended, they are to be given ample time to make up work and be given support services. For Valley View, the main focus to abide with the new law is to exhaust all other available interventions before taking a student out of school and to increase transparency.
Martinez School unveils murder mystery A unique “who-done-it,” The Inconvenient Corpse Part I, made its debut at A. Vito Martinez Middle School. No, live drama has not returned to the Romeoville middle school. Instead, students will appear in a video production of a mystery co-director Wendy Streit calls “adorable and funny.” Streit, a language arts teacher at Martinez, says the script reminds her a lot of the movie Arsenic and Old Lace with some local variations added. It focuses on a group of older women who belong to a women’s club that meets in the AVM library. On this particular day, the Grand Marshal of the Founders Day Parade joins them for lunch but dies mysteriously after eating a pasta dish. That’s where the first installment of the movie ends. As patrons leave, they will be able to vote for which character they think committed murder. “In the spring they’ll get to see the finale,” Streit said, adding production on part two won’t begin until March or April. The brainchild of Martinez Library Media Center Director Beth Stephens, who Streit said “did a beautiful job” with all the editing,
The Inconvenient Corpse took a lot longer to shoot than both Streit and Stephens expected. “Maybe we could be better at it if we knew what we were doing,” Streit said. “We had set aside six hours but discovered that wasn’t possible. When shooting a movie, you have to do a lot of takes. It was humbling.” That’s why the mystery became a two-parter. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “The hardest part was getting the kids to look the same all the time with their wigs and costumes, but we were able to do it. It looks seamless.” The cast includes: Anahkah Sims (Mimi Monroe), Peter Manu (Mac), Gabe Bell (Darryl Burdett), Krzysztof Noga (Alvin Carnes), Jacob Noah Fase (Sheriff Dan), Daniel Kaliszyk (Dexter), Thomas Chase (Doc Poindexter), Nikolas Andenson (Mayor Hightower), Caitlin Giacomo (Kaitlin), Kate Katauskas (Frieda), Nicole Valverde (Molly), Toni Caruso (Miriam), Aniya Carter (Luann Sommers), Claudia Maldonado (Nelda), Emily Leahy (Gert Hoppelmeyer), Claire Yacko (Myrna Fontaine), Zoey Anthony (June Hildebrand) and Kyleanna Fitzpatrick (Dolly Manfred).

committee meeting, board members also discussed a $225 million financing plan to fund the various construction projects. Mike Fricilone, who chairs the county board’s finance committee, outlined eight different revenue streams identified by the county to fund the project. These revenue options include courthouse and user fees, existing property and sales taxes, bonding rebates, special funds and contributions from the city of Joliet. “This is a fiscally responsible plan that doesn’t raise taxes, uses
existing revenues and only borrows what is necessary,” Fricilone said. “I look forward to seeing ground broken next year and building a Will County for the future.” In a press release from the Will County Board, officials added that the financing plan also allocates “significant revenues” to road projects. The board is expected to continue discussions on the plan at the Jan. 14 committee of the whole meeting. Officials said a plan could be approved as soon as next month.

Christmas carols and holiday television specials and stories are filled with traditions that may be lost on us in the 21st Century. Where did these customs, traditions and legends come from? If you’ve heard of frankincense and myrrh, it’s probably thanks to the biblical account of the birth of Jesus. The book of Matthew says Magi, or wise men, followed a bright eastern star to Bethlehem, the place where Christians believe Jesus was born. There, these wise men saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the child. We all know what gold is, but what are frankincense and myrrh? Both frankincense and myrrh are derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees, respectively, after their bark has been cut. The leaking resin is allowed to harden and is scraped off the trunk in tear-shaped droplets; it may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils. Both substances are edible and often

chewed like gum. They are also extremely fragrant, particularly when burned, with frankincense giving off a sweet, citrusy scent and myrrh producing a piney, bitter odor. These items were considered extremely valuable in the ancient world and standard gifts for a king or deity. Gold is a valuable precious metal, frankincense was used as perfume or incense, and myrrh was used as anointing oil. Other accounts from the ancient world that detail these items being presented as gifts include King Seleucus II Callinicus offering to the god Apollo at the temple in Miletus. The Book of Isaiah also mentions these gifts. During Jerusalem’s restoration, it was said that nations and kings would come and “bring gold and frankincense.” Another tradition during Christmas is to hang mistletoe in one’s house. Mistletoe is a plant that grows on willow and apple trees, and the tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient druids. According to mythology, mistletoe possesses mystical powers that bring good luck to households where it is hung and wards off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology. Interestingly, some of the first Christians who came to Western Europe tried to ban the use of mistletoe in churches. However, many Christians continue to hang the plant to this day. York Minster Church in the UK used to
hold a special Mistletoe Service in the winter, where wrongdoers in the city of York could come and be pardoned. England also gave us the custom of kissing under mistletoe. In the original custom, a berry was picked from the sprig of mistletoe before the person could be kissed. Once all the berries had gone, there could be no more kissing. Christmas carols are an important part of the holiday. A favorite of carolers this time of year is “The First Noel,” but what does “noel” mean? In French, joyeux noel means “Merry Christmas.” Our modern English word comes from the Middle English nowel, which Webster’s Dictionary defines as “a shout of joy or Christmas song.” The roots of the word are the French noel “Christmas season,” which may come from the Old French nael, which in turn, is derived from the Latin natalis, meaning “birth.” Since Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, it was natural for people to refer to the celebration as the “nativity” or the “birth.” Another possible root for noel, also from the French, is the word nouvelles, meaning “news.” As the popular carol says, “The first noel the angels did say / Was to certain poor shepherds. . . .” The meaning of “news” certainly makes sense in that context. However, the early usage and definition of noel seem to focus more on the idea of birth and that is probably the more accurate meaning.

SpaRtaNS HOST CLASSIC Romeoville is the home of 16team Christmas tournament
By sCott taylor SpoRtS eDItoR
staylor@enterprisepublications.com @taylor_Sports
This year’s Romeoville Christmas Classic will have a new look. After having separate big and small school brackets with the two divisions meeting in the final round, this year there is just one bracket with the different school sizes mixed in. Defending champion Downers Grove North returns this year to lead the field. It has been a slow start this year for the Trojans as they are just 2-5 and have yet to win a WSC Silver game. However, they used the tournament last year to springboard into a strong second half of the season. Defending tournament MVP Devin Blake returns to lead the Trojans. “We are looking forward to playing a four-game tournament format,” Downers North coach James Thomas said. “Being able to complete against a field of teams and get a variety of styles of play allows for your team to improve heading into the new year.” They open the tournament Saturday, Dec. 26 at 6:30 p.m. against Lincoln-Way East (3-4). A win would put them in the 8 p.m. game Dec. 28 against the winner of Chicago Christian (7-1) and Lemont (4-3), which features recruit PJ Pipes. The losing schools will play at 1:30 p.m. that day.
The other half of the bottom bracket features the host school, Romeoville. It opens play in the nightcap on the first day at 8 p.m. against Oak Forest (4-3). The Spartans (3-4) feature several underclassmen on their roster, but are led by senior Matt Cappelletti. “We open up the RHS Classic against Oak Forest, which is well coached in has played in the championship game at RHS the past two years,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “We just want to continue developing our youth and playing four solid quarters of basketball each night. We are emphasizing closing out games better in the fourth and that starts with attention to detail defensively.” The winner of that game plays at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 against the winner of Glenbard South (4-3) and Phillips (1-2). The losers of the game will face off at noon. The bottom bracket winners will face off at 8 p.m. Dec. 29, while the consolation winners face off at noon. On the other half of the bracket are two more Voyager Media teams. Plainfield Central (0-8) faces off with Reavis (4-3) at 9 a.m. Dec. 26 to open the tournament. The Wildcats feature several senior leaders in Justin Windt, Chris Bowitz and Scott Gustafson. “The Romeoville Christmas

the Dipper field is one of the best in the state.” Bolingbrook (2-3) is led by senior returners Devon Sams and Zach Grady, as well as junior Nana Akenten. Butler is a member of the Noble Athletic Conference. A win on the opening game

LEWIS
Pair of Flyer athletes earn AOW honors Former Lewis golfer hired as coach University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Lewis University sophomore forward Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball, it was announced by the league office Monday. In his lone game of the week last Wednesday, Strus scored 33 points on 13-of-23 (.565) shooting, while notching 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks in 35 minutes of action during the Flyers’ 83-67 win over Olivet Nazarene. “Max continued his remarkable play with an outstanding performance against a very good Olivet Nazarene team,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “It’s getting to the point where nothing Max does on the court surprises you anymore. “He is a tremendous talent.” The effort gave Strus his sixth double-double of the season, a total that currently ties him for fifth among all NCAA Division II players. For the season, Strus is averaging a conference-best 25.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. The 2015 GLVC Freshman of the Year earns his second career weekly selection, as he was recognized by the league on Nov. 30, 2015, following a 52-point scoring effort that also led to USBWA Division II National Player of the Week honors.
TRACK AND FIELD The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Wednesday (Dec. 16) that Lewis University sophomore Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) has been named the GLVC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending December 13th. Holesinger won the heptathlon at Nebraska Kearney’s Charlie Foster Pre-Holiday Classic with a schoolrecord 4,985 points on Saturday
(Dec. 12). That mark breaks the former standard of 4,823 points set by teammate Jared Harkness (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood) in 2014 and places him atop the GLVC and third in NCAA Division II. “Bryce has put in a lot of work this off season,” Lewis head men’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “He is a lot more polished and once he gets through the training season, I think he will be ready to make a splash at the national meet.” Lewis has now won eight of the last 11 GLVC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week awards. The Flyers return to action on January 8th, as they host the Lewis
Open at the Recreation Center Fieldhouse. Action is set to begin at 4 PM.
women’s golf Former Lewis University Director of Athletics and current WisconsinEau Claire Director of Athletics Dan Schumacher announced that he has hired former Flyer golfer Courtney Everett as the new Blugolds head men’s and women’s golf coach. Everett was a four-year letterwinner for Lewis from 200711 and averaged 91.3 strokes in 59 rounds, including four Top 10 finishes for the Flyers. She was a four-year Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and Br.
David Delahanty Award winner, given to Lewis student-athletes for academic excellence. This past Fall, Everett was the head golf coach at Regis High School in Eau Claire, Wis. “I am delighted that Courtney has been given a chance to coach at the collegiate level because she is very deserving of this opportunity,” Lewis head women’s golf coach Skip Steffey said. “She was always a dedicated, hard-worker who put the team first and learned a great deal about the game during her time at Lewis. “I know she will do a great job because she doesn’t know how to give anything less than 110%.”

The strong community support we see year after year allows us to directly help the children within Will County and that’s what makes this event truly special.” The first day began with families being greeted at check-in by “Santa’s Elves.” Visitors enjoyed playing games provided by the Joliet Junior Woman’s Club while excitedly awaiting their departure to the “North Pole.” Guests also enjoyed a train display, courtesy of the Will County Model Railroad Association, and hot cocoa, all at Joliet Union Station. Families then boarded a Metra train, en route to see Santa. Each train car was escorted by volunteer elves who led the guests in Christmas songs. As each train arrived in Tinley Park, the elves marched passengers down Oak Park Avenue to Durbin’s Restaurant to see Santa and to enjoy a buffet breakfast or lunch. Saturday’s festivities also included a “Santa’s Workshop” at the Tinley Park Fire Station, where guests made reindeer food, enjoyed face painting, wrote letters to Santa and created holiday-themed crafts, courtesy of Macaroni Kid Joliet – Shorewood and Holly Club of Joliet. On Sunday, guests returned to Durbin’s for breakfast or lunch, pictures with Santa and had cookies delivered by Mrs. Claus. Santa’s Workshop, complete with crafts, cookies and fun activities was held at the American Legion. The Christmas Express is one of several key fundraisers to underwrite CASA of Will County programs and services. The next event is the “Have a Heart for the Child” Benefit Auction Gala to be held Feb. 27 at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet. The elegant event will feature Andy Avalos, meteorologist for NBC 5 Chicago, as the master of ceremonies.
