Local artist puts photography in a new light Bolingbrook resident’s high definition photography on display at The Promenade By laura katauskas bugle staff

Bolingbrook resident John Sullivan has had a passion for photos since childhood. And now, he is sharing that nurtured talent with a showcase gallery in his hometown.

Two years ago, Sullivan, known as Sully to most, decided to share his works in a seasonal gallery, an all metal High Definition Art Gallery at The Promenade, choosing the Bolingbrook location because of the camaraderie felt in the town he and his family have lived in for the past 27 years.

It was his parents who nurtured his love for photography, documenting their travels to more than 80 countries in photos, inspiring their young son.

“I started taking pictures at age 12 when my father, Jack, gave me my first 35mm camera,” said Sullivan. “By the age of 16 I was taking pictures for a local newspaper and fell in love with photography.”

Ever since, he has been taking

pictures of landscapes, wildlife and portraits.

Though mostly self-taught, he has attended close to 100 classes including continued education for photography at SAIC (Chicago Art Institute) and studied under Scott Kelby, Moose Peterson and the internationally-acclaimed photographer Joe McNally, along with light painting expert photographer Dave Black.

A new medium for Sullivan, his prints are put on super thin/ lightweight metal, allowing the art to show in very high definition making the detail, color and vibrancy brilliant.

“We decided to open a season gallery the last two years here in Bolingbrook to show off the art as a lot of people are not familiar with the metal medium,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan keeps up with his parents’ legacy of travel, going on the road himself to take in new photos from all walks of life.

The gallery, located between Justice and Forever 21, is now open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Wed., 3 to 8 p.m.; Thursday,

11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Area Muslims condemn ISIS Association of Pakistani Americans’ president speaks out against ‘un-Islamic ideology’

As terror attacks by groups like the Islamic State in Syria and Al Qaeda continue to stun the world, American Muslims are gathering to promote peace and to help educate their communities about their opposition to these types of extremist groups.

Hours after the Paris attacks, the Association of Pakistani Americans in Bolingbrook sent a statement to the ambassador of Paris and local officials condemning the act.

“We are equally saddened and shaken by the attacks of this terror group,” the statement read. “This kind of inhumane act has no place in any society. These individuals carried out their own agenda using Islam which is against the teaching of Islam.”

In a time when a new Gallup poll taken Dec. 8 noted that 2 in 3 people think acts of terror in the U.S. are likely, The Muslim community in Bolingbrook is making efforts to reassure residents that radical Islam does not represent the more than 1,000 Muslims living in the area.

Talat Rashid, president of the APA, described ISIS as a terrorist organization that grew after the Iraq invasion and flourished in Syria.

“It is a cult, which has nothing to do with Islam,” Rashid told the Bugle. “It is dividing Muslims for their own benefits. It also seeks to divide the entire society to gain their ill intentions. It has killed thousands of Muslims since its inception.”

ISIS, according to Rashid, does not represent Islam or Muslims in any way. Similar to other religions, he said Islam teaches peace.

“We Muslims condemn their un-Islamic ideology, and do not condone their actions because ISIS is not one of us.”

He explained that whenever incidents of this magnitude happens, regardless of who carried it out, he believes no religions advocate killing innocent people.

“We are very fortunate that so far nothing has happened in Bolingbrook,” Rashid said. “But you never know, because backlash is a result of public emotions and immediate reaction. People listen and read news and make biased judgments immediately without looking into the real matter, especially when a Muslim name is involved. People question why these groups are defaming Islam and its real flower. “[American Muslims] all try to disassociate themselves with [terrorists] and tell them, this is not us, this is not Islam. As always, we pray that this does not happen again.”

Last year, the threat of ISIS did hit close to home. A Bolingbrook man was arrested after attempting to leave the country to join ISIS in Syria.

“It was very shocking to all of us and no one expected that this would hit our home in Bolingbrook, where the Muslim community is proactive and living the American dream,” said Rashid. “It was a very scary and unbelievable event

that shook everyone not only in Bolingbrook but the entire U.S. This young man did not go to any of our Islamic schools in Bolingbrook.

He was recruited from the Internet, which is the tool that is being used

by ISIS.”

American Values Luckily, Rashid said that Muslims in Bolingbrook, with two mosques and one Islamic school, Furqan Academy, have been very well supported by the village.

“Bolingbrook is a very diverse city and Muslims are proud to be a part of this fabric,” said Rashid. “The city not only encourages religious practices but also helps facilitate these religious practices. In the past 25 years there has not been a single incident in my knowledge where any Muslim was discriminated against based on their ethnic and religious practices.”

Rashid said it is incumbent upon American Muslims to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to ISIS to law enforcement authorities immediately.

“ISIS is targeting youth and luring them in to their so called un-Islamic and evil beliefs which has nothing to do with Islam and Islamic values. At the same time it is the responsibility of parents as well to monitor their kids. Watch for changed behavior and keep an eye on the circle of their friends so that incidents like this do not happen again,” said Rashid.

The Gallup poll cited earlier also indicated that the trust in government to protect against terrorism is at a new low of 55 percent, that is 33 points lower than 2001, shortly after 9/11, when 88 percent of Americans said they had a great deal or fair amount of confidence.

Adding to the fire are comments like that of presidential candidate Donald Trump who has been calling for an extreme crackdown on U.S. Muslims.

“A presidential candidate should not be making comments like this,” said Rashid. “His comments not only outraged Muslims, but every other ethnic community, including other Republican and Democratic candidates. Muslims also want to see this country a safe place to live.

The reason people want to come

to the U.S. is because of American values such as religious freedom and justice, according to Rashid. He said that Trump’s comments about Muslims are very un-American.

“He cannot hold the entire Muslim community responsible for the act of a few evil and sick people who are carrying out these acts of violence which has no place in Islam,“ Rashid said.

He added, however, that Trump is getting a lot of attention because he is speaking on behalf of average Americans who may think that Muslim are terrorists, even though it is not based on fact.

“We Muslims have to do a better job defending religion and disassociation of ourselves from ISIS and the groups like them who are defaming Islam, a peaceful religion,” Rashid said.

New state test scores no surprise to Valley View District says scores in line with district assessments; show room for improvement

Last March, school districts across the state braced for a new assessment to gauge student performance, spent millions to implement and administer the test, and now have received results.

Without a baseline to compare to previous years, school districts and parents alike are taking the results of the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for

College and Careers exam at face value.

“We must remember that these results cannot and should not be compared to prior scores,” said State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith, Ph.D. “The PARCC test not only aligns to higher standards and asks students to demonstrate their understanding in a different way, but it also reflects student performance across five new, more nuanced performance levels.”

The PARCC, designed to replace the ISAT and PSAE in the 20142015 school year, is now being

used to measure deeper learning, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills and allow teachers and administrators more feedback on student progress through online assessments.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, under the ISAT and PSAE, results were reported as having met or exceeded expectations. There are now five PARCC performance levels, which range from 1 to 5.

“These results should not be used to label any student or school as failing or inadequate.

We encourage school districts to take this year’s scores at face value and look for ways to improve areas where scores are not meeting expectations,” Smith said. “Next year, the 2016 scores will be available sooner and will be to track progress from this baseline year.”

Students falling within level 4 or 5 have readiness for the next grade level or course, which is considered on track for college and careers, as defined by the Illinois Learning Standards. Students at this level have a thorough understanding of grade-level content and are on the right track to being ready for college-level coursework. Students receiving a 3 are approaching expectations, but may need additional assistance mastering content. Students receiving a 1 or 2 need more assistance in mastering the content and are in need of greater supports.

Overall, 31.6 percent of Valley View School District students are meeting or exceeding PARCC expectations, which is just shy of the 32.9 percent state score.

However, Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder said the state score is not the goal and the district realizes there is room for improvement and is working to raise those scores.

Kinder explains the new PARCC scores are in line with what the district expected. Based on the federal government and the state’s belief that the bar has been set too low in education, an initiative to increase rigor and develop systemic change through school districts has been in the works for the past few years, including common core standards in 2010.

To remedy the situation, beginning with the spring 2013 scores, the state increased scores on the ISAT to align with new standards. That ISAT test reflected 20 percent of student test items aligned with common core and parents and the district saw a decline in scores as a result of that change.

“Expectations are much higher and all districts are now dealing with that gap,” said Kinder.

PARCC is now 100 percent aligned with common core and there are a variety of different levels of expectations.

Kinder said, however, that the district and parents are familiar with the district’s own online assessment, MAP (Measures of Academic Progress), which the district has found to be similar to PARCC and offering similar results, therefore making PARCC results not much of a surprise.

“There is a high correlation in the students who are meeting and exceeding standards on MAP and are doing the same on PARCC,” said Kinder.

While PARCC results cannot be linked to a previous year, the district is using the data in relation to other local assessments, and digging into each data set to check for trends at each subject and grade level.

In summary, the district has come to find strength in scores at the middle school level. Students are above average in math for

grades 6, 7, 8 and high school; and above average in English language arts in grades 7, 8 and high school with sixth grade on target.

“The change in curriculum and staff support is starting to shift and show in the results and at a comparable level of rigor,” said Kinder.

However data is not as strong in the elementary grades, with average scores lower than the state for English Language Arts and Math.

“There are a lot of reasons for this and we are addressing this,” said Kinder.

“One of the largest factors is that with common core and more rigorous standards, the bar has been raised for elementary teachers who have to master all subjects and that has been a challenge for us,” said Kinder.

“We need to deeply develop our teachers and provide them with the proper training and we need to find the time to do that,” said Kinder. “Currently teachers are pulled out once a month; but we don’t want to take away from classroom instruction either.

Professional development time is a concern.”

She said while the district has started the process, more is underway.

“We need to look at how to set them up for success,” said Kinder.

Based on the PARCC results and other assessments, the district looks at ways to improve and collaborate.

“We look at what areas are successful and what programs are working and we try to increase efficiencies,” said Kinder.

Bottom line, Kinder said, the district is seeing solid growth and is starting to solidify the curriculum changes over the past few years.

“We are not at the highest academic level but we are continuing to grow and close the gap,” said Kinder.

State workers call for fair contracts Rally attracts hundreds to Joliet union hall

State workers, activists and community group members filled the IBEW union hall in Joliet last week to criticize Gov. Bruce Rauner’s handling of state budget negotiations and demand fair contracts for public service unions.

Brent Cutro, a forensic scientist and latent print examiner at the state crime lab in Joliet, was one of those workers.

“I’m here to show strength and unity; to show that Gov. Rauner is making a mistake by treating state workers as he’s treating them,” he said. Cutro, who works in the Illinois State Police’s forensic services division, said he has been working without a contract since July 1 and has not received a raise that offsets the rising cost of healthcare in more than six years.

“We need a contract, and we need a raise,” Cutro said.

The rally, held Dec. 8, was one of seven rallies planned throughout Illinois. Speakers from public service unions such as the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Illinois Valley Federation of Labor, as well as state Democratic officials, argued that the governor’s “anti-union” agenda was damaging critical state services and weakening middle-class families.

“We’re standing up for fair contracts for state workers who have to negotiate directly with a governor who doesn’t respect them or the vital work they do,” AFSCME Executive Director Roberta Lynch told the crowd of almost 1,000.

“We’re coming together from one end of the state to the other to say, ‘we stand together.’”

Specifically, Lynch was critical of funding gaps in various public services, as well as claims that union workers are overpaid and receive “overly generous” pension benefits. The veteran union organizer said the governor is using an anti-union rhetoric and state budget negotiations to target local government employees’ bargaining power.

“We see that this governor is trying to provoke conflict to

“We’re doing everything we can to negotiate in good faith. We’re doing everything we can to prevent a disruption in vital state services.”

While the focus of the rally was on the current budget impasse and its effects on public services, speakers also looked ahead to 2016 and

described the upcoming election cycle as critically important for union rights throughout the state.

Lynch told the crowd that they had a “special responsibility” to prevent candidates who are backed by Rauner from taking control of the General Assembly.

“If that happens, the first thing he’s going to do is kill unions and wipe out collective bargaining,” she said.

“We have to treat these elections differently than any election before, because our survival is at stake in 2016.”

State Sen. Linda Holmes also spoke and echoed Lynch’s comments on the importance electing candidates who oppose the governor’s “turnaround agenda.”

She added that the governor is “holding the state budget

hostage” in order to pass that agenda, which she described as an attack on prevailing wage and collective bargaining. Holmes also directed some of the blame for the current issues facing state workers toward a “disillusioned” electorate that allowed Rauner to win the governorship in 2014.

“Unfortunately, we have to look in the mirror and say, ‘we sort of dropped the ball here,’” she told the crowd. “We allowed ourselves to be so disillusioned by some of the things our party has done to us.

“What we have to do now is take it back,” she said.

In addition to scheduled speakers, a number of local elected officials also attended the rally, including state reps. Larry Walsh Jr., Natalie Manley, Emily McAsey; state Sen. And while a new year provides an excellent opportunity for self-evaluation and By Jason Florin plans for positive To Your Mental change in the Health months ahead, there’s no reason you have to wait for the calendar to turn in order to begin a transformation.

Taking even the smallest steps now will make it more likely that you follow through on your commitment to work toward self improvement in the New Year. It also establishes a pattern of behavior that will help make next year’s holiday season more manageable.

The end of the year can be a challenging time to initiate change, although it also presents a unique opportunity. While the hectic pace of holiday shopping and planning family gatherings gives us ample reasons to indulge our harmful habits, this may also be the best time to start healthy ones. A behavior does not become a habit right away. In fact, a 2009 study done at University College London suggests that people need an average of 66 days to develop a new habit.

Putting off change only delays this timeline from beginning.

An important first step is focusing on a specific, active behavior. Some of the most common resolutions involve losing weight, quitting smoking, and reducing or stopping alcohol use.

All of these are admirable goals, yet they are missing an important element. None of them involves actions; instead, they are all the absence of action. In order to be successful in these goals, you will need to begin new behaviors that will take their place. What will you

be doing when you are not smoking, when you are in shape and when you are no longer drinking?

The image that comes to mind is the action that you can take.

Getting motivated for new behaviors is a crucial part of making the commitment necessary for change to happen. Consider making a list of reasons why you want to make a change. Do you want to look better, feel better, save money or eliminate health problems? Maybe it’s about being alive longer for your family or setting an example for your children.

The General Assembly just passed and the governor signed a bill that released nearly $3 billion of alreadycollected money sitting in dedicated funds. Among these are utility ratepayer contributions to the Illinois Supplemental Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund, which supplements the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

These ratepayer contributions are collected through our utility bills and placed in a public trust for the exclusive purpose of aiding our state’s elderly, people with special needs, veterans and poor with the high cost of heat and electricity.

Don’t gamble with human services On Dec. 7, Gov. Rauner signed legislation that allows lottery winners to collect their winnings. Those fortunate citizens will enjoy additional money during the holiday season. Additional funds have also been released to various segments of the state. Yet the most important sector of our state remains waiting: human services.

No one is immune from either

I commend the General Assembly and governor for finally releasing these funds as the winter months approach.

Despite this step forward, the bigger budget discussion continues and these funds are still in danger. These SLEAF funds are not general revenue funds and should be off the table as Springfield considers solutions to the current fiscal year and FY17 budgets.

These funds combined with the federal funds only satisfy a small fraction of the state’s overall need.

The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity estimated that under current state and federal funding levels LIHEAP would only help 35 percent of the roughly 926,000 eligible households in Illinois this year.

The SLEAF fund also helps keep all ratepayers’ bills lower by reducing the

“uncollectables” the utilities recover in everyone’s rates.

Given the escalating utility costs, the harsh Illinois winters our residents have had to endure in recent years, and the ongoing hardships due to the budget stalemate and slow economic recovery, these funds are needed more than ever.

Challenging fiscal decisions must be made; however, any budget solutions cannot include consideration of redirecting these much-needed funds into the general revenue fund or reallocating any portion of these funds. It is imperative that the Illinois SLEAF, which aids our most vulnerable residents, be protected.

receiving assistance from human service providers, working at such an entity, or volunteering at one. From pre-natal care to disability to senior citizens to after-school programs, everyone is somehow affected.

However, many of these providers, including the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, have not received state funds since July 1. Some have instituted furlough days, reduced hours, or closed their doors because the governor and General Assembly will not agree on a state budget.

This inaction is shameful. We hear one political party blaming the other, which is pointless. Perhaps the governor and General Assembly should lock themselves in the Capitol and not come out until a budget is passed.

Human service providers should not have to resort to buying lottery tickets on the oft chance that they will win.

BHS American government classes must reach a verdict Students in each of four classes portray the bailiff, the defendant or witnesses Cathy McCaffrey’s American Government classes at Bolingbrook High School learned first-hand about the U.S. judicial system courtesy of a mock trial involving a pretend case in which a battered woman killed her husband.

“They got packets of information a few weeks ago that they worked on,” McCaffrey said. “We spend a couple of days going over it. But most of it is up to them. They take their ideas from Law and Order and things like that.”

The pretend case, United States

vs. Dominique Stephens, involves a battered woman who admitted killing her husband while he was sleeping and was charged with first-degree murder. Her defense centers around battered woman syndrome.

Students in each of four classes portray the bailiff, the defendant or witnesses. They serve on the defense team, the prosecution team or jury. McCaffrey is the judge. Each class conducts its own trial.

“The kids are very creative,” Mrs. McCaffrey said, pointing out that in

past years they have used makeup to portray injuries and put on their best clothes for the trial. “You never know what you’re going to get.”

“There are two things they should learn from this class: voting and being on a jury,” Mrs. McCaffrey said, adding the mock trial helps them discover two things about the judicial system. “A) It’s harder than you think it is and B) It’s harder than you think it is.”

Addams STARS students launch clothing drive Students in Jane Addams Middle School’s STARS (Students Taking A Responsible Stand) organization have begun a campaign to empower others to give back to the school and the community.

The campaign includes an effort to collect new gloves, scarves and hats that will be given to

students in need at Jane Addams, Independence and Jamie McGee, as well as to local charities. A Bolingbrook resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, helped launch the drive with a donation of dozens of scarves and other items.

The clothing drive will continue through the end of next week.

Items may be dropped off at the school office.

In addition, STARS members and faculty advisors are creating and coloring more than 700 paper candy canes with notes of encouragement that will placed on every Jane Addams student’s locker prior to winter break.

On the other hand, acknowledging the poor choice and taking steps to do better are highly effective. Stop the slide by recognizing that you are in control of your actions.

Within the first six games of the 2015 season, the Bolingbrook girls basketball team will have already faced three of the toughest teams on its schedule.

“In our first six games, we will already have played H-F, Montini and Tucker out of Georgia with the big girl (6-foot, 3-inch Chiqueria Cook) who is going to Liberty,” said Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith.

“But, we want to play a tough schedule because that is how you learn.”

And learning is the most important step for the Raiders this year.

“It is still a work in progress,” Smith said. “We don’t have a lot of size and we only have one returning player (Brittney Patrick) on the roster from last year’s team, so this is about trying to put everything together and get that cohesiveness that will make us play better as a unit.”

“We have a lack of experience, but I don’t want us to play our best basketball today, I want us to play our best basketball in March and hopefully with a little more experience and if we keep working in practice, they will get it,” Smith said. “We used the Georgia trip for the team to get more comfortable with each other and really find each other’s strengths on the court. Next year, we should hopefully be able to roll right into this in the beginning of the season and not have to wait until the end of the season.”

While Patrick is the lone returner, she is not the only player with varsity experience, as the Raiders added 6-foot junior Jnaya Walker, a transfer from Joliet Catholic Academy.

As a sophomore on the Angels’ varsity team last year, Walker averaged 7.7 points per game and will add to the Raiders’ offensive attack this year that features a lot of talented shooters.

Bolingbrook grad Mitchem heads to Lewis Jake Dixon (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park HS) and Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook HS) will join the Lewis men’s volleyball program for the 2017 season.

“Both of these guys have just scratched the surface of their overall ability,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “They are a great addition to the Lewis men’s volleyball family. I’m looking forward to seeing them make their impact at Lewis both on and off the court.”

Dixon (6-6, 205, OH) earned 11 varsity letters at Bethel Park High School, with four in volleyball, four in basketball and three in football. As a junior, he was named First Team All-State, First Team All-Conference and picked up WPIAL MVP accolades. As a sophomore, he was selected Second Team All-WPIAL and First Team All-Conference.

Academically, he is a high honor roll student. He played club volleyball for the Pittsburgh

Volleyball Club.

“Jake is an excellent overall athlete who has a heavy arm,” Friend said. “He is also a fantastic student who will help us maintain excellence in the classroom. We look for him to really take off at the next level.”

Mitchem (6-9, 185, MB) was named All-Conference as a junior at Bolingbrook High School. He played club volleyball at Sports Performance during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. His mother, Jackie, played basketball at Lewis from 1987-91.

“Tyler has a ton of potential with his size, long frame and athleticism,” Friend said. “I’m also always excited about getting a second generation Flyer.”

Lewis is ranked No. 8 in the nation opens the 2016 season on Jan. 2 against UC Santa Barbara in a 4 p.m. first serve at Neil Carey Arena.

No. 8 Lewis men’s volleyball had two student-athletes selected as 2016 Off the Block Preseason

All-Americans. Senior middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) has been named to the First Team, while senior setter Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was named to the Second Team.

Off the Block is a website launched in January 2011 which is among the nation’s leading media outlets for college men’s volleyball coverage.

Last season, Walsh helped the Flyers finish as National Runnerup. The senior led the nation in blocks in 2015 with 1.54 a set.

Walsh earned AVCA All-American Second Team, Volleyball Magazine’s All-American Second Team and All-MIVA First Team nods as well as being named the Off the Block/Springbak National Blocker of the Year after the conclusion of the 2015 season.

Fifer ran a Lewis offense last season which recorded a team hitting percentage of .338, good enough to end the season ranked third in the nation. Fifer set his

season high of 52 assists in the National Championship match against Loyola. The senior was named to the 2015 All-MIVA Second Team.

SOFTBALL Lewis University head softball coach Becky Pearl announced on Thursday (Dec. 10) that she has signed Taylor Boelte, Amy Bukovsky, Emily Guske, Allie Piatt and Kendyl Strack to National Letters of Intent to play for the Flyers, beginning with the 2017 campaign.

“All five student-athletes are a perfect fit for Lewis and I can’t wait to get them started here,” Pearl said. “They all bring something different to the table and if they don’t make an impact immediately, they certainly will down the line.”

Boelte is a left-handed pitcher out of Rockton Hononegah who can also play first base. As a sophomore, she was named to the NIC-10 All-Conference Team

and Third-Team All State honoree after batting .407 with three homers and 31 RBI for the Lady Indians. In the circle, she went 13-1 with 151 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched. She missed most of her junior campaign due to an ACL injury in her knee.

“Taylor may have missed most of last season, but I know (and have seen) that she is capable of dominating opposing batters,” Pearl said.

Bukovsky is a middle infielder who is a three-year varsity letterwinner for Montini Catholic.

She is a three-time Academic AllGCAC selection and two-time All-GCAC performer in softball.

In 2015, she batted .525 with 48 runs, two home runs and 44 RBI on her way to Suburban Life and Daily Herald All-Area accolades. She picked up Illinois Coaches Association Third-Team All-State honors as well, as the Lady Broncos finished third

Spartans open season in style Romeoville girls bowling team look for a solid showing in Southwest Prairie Conference

Romeoville had one of its best starts in years at the Plainfield Central Invite to open the season.

There the Spartans placed 10th in the 24-team tournament, with a total pinfall of 5,006. Joliet West won with a 6,056, while Aurora West was second with a 5,609.

“It is our best finish here,” Romeoville coach Mike Eccleston said. “Some of our younger girls really stepped up today. We’ve been working on spares a lot at practice and today it paid off. We converted a lot of easy spares.”

Jenny Zaremba led the way with a 1,136. Abby Wallace shot a 1,111, Annaliese McClelland rolled a 971, Erin Cosner had a 929 and Caitlyn Masnica added an 859.

“She had one bad game today, but overall I was happy with her output,” Eccleston said of Wallace.

“She is coming along with her shot.

It will come in time.”

Perhaps the most impressive part for Romeoville was it had a better

afternoon by nearly 200 pins from the morning, including its best game of the day, a 930, in the final game.

“There is a lot of team unity with the girls. Normally in the last game they are tired, but they were motivated and ready to go. We didn’t want to fall to 12th and they came out and bowled their best game of the day.”

Unlike most other years where the Spartans have to start from the ground up with a bunch of new players, this year the top seven are all upperclassmen with experience.

“This is a rarity for us,” Eccleston said of the experience. “It is nice to be able to work on things that we left off on. The girls are bowling outside of the season so when they come back it is a refresher and not a rebuild. It is nice that the girls are bowling and we can just work on the finer points.”

The Spartans hope that experience translates into being more competitive in one of the top conferences in the state, the Southwest Prairie Conference.

After conference, the Spartans hope to improve on last year’s postseason performance were Wallace and Cosner advanced to the sectional round.

“I’m looking for one more step,”

Eccleston said. “I’m looking for state. Why not? One is a senior and one is a junior and both of them want to do that. Another girl just missed sectionals. So, maybe three in sectionals or even as a team. It matters what sectional we are in.”

The key for Romeoville is the same that many teams have.

“Spares will be the key,” Eccleston said. “We have to convert our onepin spares.”

In a nonconference match, Romeoville topped Bolingbrook 2,599 to 1,981. Cosner shot a 584, Wallace had a 558, Zaremba tallied a 555, McClelland rolled a 524 and Masnica added a 378.

The Spartans fell to Neuqua Valley 2,506 to 2,433.

Strack, who can play both third base and catcher, comes to Romeoville from GenoaKingston.

She is a two-time Big Northern Conference selection and was named a Big Northern Conference Scholar-Athlete in 2015.

As a junior, Strack batted .569 with 10 home runs and finished with 62 hits.

“Kendyl is a versatile player that I can put anywhere on the field,” Pearl said. “She hits not only for contact, but has a little pop in her bat as well.”

TRACK AND FIELD The No. 15 Lewis University men’s track and field team dominated the heptathlon at the Charlie Foster Classic, hosted

by Nebraska Kearney, as they took three of the top four places, including a school-record first place showing by sophomore Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./ Fulton) on Saturday (Dec. 12) afternoon.

All three top four finishers earned NCAA Provisional marks.

Holesinger finished with 4,985 points, breaking the previous school-record of 4,823, set by teammate Jared Harkness (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood) in 2014.

Senior Dan Lentz (Minooka, Ill./ Minooka) was third in the event with 4,855 points, while Harkness finished fourth (4,732).

“I thought it was a great performance by all three studentathletes who competed in a great field,” Lewis head men’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said.

BASKETBALL Lewis returns to action on January 8th, as they host the Lewis Open at 4 PM in the Recreation Center Fieldhouse.

Three Flyers finished in doubledigits on Wednesday (Dec. 9) evening as No. 7 Lewis women’s basketball topped Saint Francis (IL) 73-61 at Neil Carey Arena in a non-conference contest.

Saint Francis entered the contest ranked No. 10 in the NAIA. The Flyers were led offensively by freshman Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North)’s 24 points and 10 rebounds while adding four blocks.

Keillher did much of her damage at the line, making 12-of16 from the stripe.

Keillher, the NCAA Division II leader in field goal percentage, finished 6-of-10 from the floor in the game.

Lewis went up for good in the second quarter, finishing the frame on a 16-3 run.

Senior Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) drained a corner three at the buzzer to make the score 40-27 at the break.

Senior Mariyah BrawnerHenley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) added 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

She scored 14 of her points in the second half as Lewis pulled away for good.

Dengler had 12 points thanks to three 3-pointers.

Wednesday was Lewis’ last game before finals.

“With a long break coming up it was nice to get a win,” Lewis head coach Kristen Gillespie said. “Jess controlled the paint to get some easy baskets in the first half and Mariyah helped put the game away for us in the second.”

Saint Francis suffers their first loss of the season and is now 9-1.

Lewis improves to 9-1.

I even budgeted for Christmas and got my Dave Says shopping done money advice by early, but in dave ramsey the process I overspent and blew my whole monthly budget. Now I’m having a hard time getting motivated again. Do you have any suggestions?

Misty Dear Misty, Lots of folks make mistakes like this, even though they went into things with the best intentions.

The Bible says that no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but it yields a harvest of righteousness.

The best way I know to encourage you to get back on the wagon is to ask one simple question: Where do you want to be in five or 10 years? Is your current path going to reward you with a financially secure life? Is it going to give you the ability to retire with dignity and to have fun living and giving in your golden years, or is it going to leave you broke, scared and desperate?

There’s one simple answer if the path you’re on isn’t going to get you what you want and where you want to be in life: Change the path!

Most people don’t even take the time to identify where they want to go in life or how to get there. They just shuffle along, blame others and circumstances for their situations, and think someone will take care of them.

That’s called being a child.

Children do what feels good at the moment, but adults devise a plan and stick to it.

Lazy is always easier, and more fun, in the short term. But it’s a huge mistake when it comes to the future, Misty. Think ahead, plan ahead and jump back on the wagon!

Personal vs. business Dear Dave, Do you view personal debt and business debt the same way?

I have about $210,000 in farm loans that are mostly tied up in land I rent to farmers. It’s the only debt I have, and the rental prices supply me an income of about $200,000 a year.

Dear Anne, Your debt required you to personally sign for it, right? So, it’s all personal debt.

The law is going to treat you exactly the same if you don’t pay a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan as the law treats you with an unsecured personal line of credit. You’re still going to get your butt sued, and they’re still going to come take your stuff or garnish your wages. It’s debt!

The only way it’s personal debt versus business debt is in your mind.

If I’m in your shoes, I’m going to live on as little as I can and pay this off like I was trying to pay off a house. If I made $200,000 a year on investments, and everything was paid for except one of my investments, how quickly would I pay that one investment off? Two years.

In your situation, surely you

can live on $100,000 a year!

Health department names next executive director Susan Olenek to begin new role Feb. 1 The Will County Board of Health chose Susan Olenek as the Will County Health Department’s new executive director, following the retirement of long-time director John Cicero.

Olenek, who will assume her new role Feb. 1, has more than 27 years of public health experience, according to a department press release. She has also has served the agency in seven capacities, most recently as assistant executive director.

A Lincoln-Way Area resident since 1971, Olenek graduated from Lincoln-Way High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Biological Sciences at Illinois State University. She is currently completing work on a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Lewis University.

Olenek began her health department career in the division of environmental health, where she became a licensed environmental health practitioner.

The department added that she has significant human resources experience and is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management.

Olenek is also a member of the Joliet Council for Working Women, a division of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
