Operation Christmas becomes community event Annual project ensures families in need have a happy holiday For more than 35 years, one local operation has made sure Bolingbrook residents in need have presents under the tree and dinner on the table for the Christmas holiday. And, its mission only grows stronger every year.

Operation Christmas is currently in full swing, as longtime volunteers Lee Bush and Lee Bush Jr. are getting down to

business, organizing, planning and prepping for one the largest Christmas collections in the area.

From the village donating space on the Performing Arts Center stage to collecting drives spearheaded by schools and businesses to residents volunteering and making donations, it is an effort that stretches throughout town. Their hope is the same, making people’s

Christmas just a bit merrier.

Starting Dec. 1, organizers of Operation Christmas began taking calls and setting up interviews with families who are in need and will continue taking calls until Dec. 20. Those who would like to request an interview can call 630226-8599.

“I needed help 32 years ago and ever since I have volunteer to give back to others what was given to me,” said Bush Sr. “My whole family is involved, my kids, my grandkids—it’s that giving feeling that makes it all worthwhile.”

Wilco proposes facilities facelift Career center looks to member school districts to fund ‘needed’ renovations By laura katauskas staff reporter

With facilities approaching 40 years old and only critical maintenance done in the past 12, the Wilco Area Career Center is in need of an overhaul and looking to its member school districts to help fund its 2015-16 capital improvement project.

Wilco is the result of a cooperative agreement among the high schools of Bolingbrook, Lemont, Plainfield Central, Plainfield North, Plainfield South, Plainfield East, Reed-Custer, Romeoville and Wilmington. By joining together in a centralized facility, the participating schools offer students a variety of quality career and technical education programs in a cost effective manner.

The mission of Wilco is to prepare students to enter the labor market with beginning occupational skills or for advanced occupational training in two- and four-year colleges, business, and technical/trade skills.

The proposed $2.7 million project would provide much needed upgrades to the facilities that provide technical and career education to high school students throughout the area.

Because each of the school districts continue to be the contributors to both the construction and operations of Wilco, each of these facilities are jointly owned by the member school districts, explained Valley View School District assistant superintendent Gary Grizaffi, who recently presented the proposal to the VVSD Board of Education.

In addition to VVSD 365U, other member districts include Lemont Township School District 210, Plainfield School District 202, Reed-Custer School District 255U and Wilmington School District 209U. The capital improvement proposal would include a host of projects, including upgrading

mechanical equipment, expanding its welding lab, repairing various life-safety deficiencies, reconfiguring interior space to better deliver content curriculum, and constructing a storage building for equipment and vehicles that will also serve to aid in instruction of auto shop and welding. The project also call for asbestos abatement and replacement of worn carpeting, lighting and crumbling concrete at the front entrance.

“This building provides career readiness for our students and other opportunities that our schools do not have the ability to offer,” said Dan Falese, a VVSD Board of Education member and Wilco board member. “This is very

much needed for a program that supported out students in their need for career readiness. All of the improvements are needed.

For example, the improvements to the bard will help tremendously with storage. Currently they have to haul cars in and out of the classroom when they are teaching how to do mechanics.”

It is estimated that Wilco would contribute up to $300,000 from its existing fund balance to fund the proposed work, while also recommending a 10-year amortization schedule to finance the balance.

Wilco is proposing six funding options for the capital improvement project. The first option is similar to the option

used to fund its last capital improvements, which were done in 2003. Each school district would pay a percentage of the total cost based on how many students attend using a five-year average.

The Wilco board is expected to finalize the project and recommend funding options to each school district to be voted upon at their respective December board of education meetings. The majority of the districts have to approve the project for it to move forward.

“This is needed, it is a matter of pay now or pay later,” Falese said.

“We would not allow facilities to get to this shape without getting something done. Our kids attend there; we want to get it done.”

Romeoville Rotary pays it forward By laura katauskas staff reporter

The Rotary Club’s international motto is “service above self,” and

the Romeoville chapter is doing its best to live up to that phrase.

From donating dictionaries and backpacks to supporting college education, the Rotary Club of Romeoville is bent on serving

its youth. Fundraisers like their recent poinsenttia sale or Oodles of Noodles spaghetti dinner all help support their mission to help out the community.

Each year the organization offers monetary scholarhsips to Romeoville High School, varying in amounts from $250 to $1,000.

Most students and their teacher’s will remember getting their own dictionary, an annual tradition the Rotary provides for every third grader in the community.

You can find the rotary club at events like the Rockin the Ville Concerts, hosting various raffles and fundraisers all in hopes to better help young students.

In addition, the club partners with the Rotaract Club at Lewis University and the Interact club at Romeoville High School, guiding students in a life of service.

Each year the club is able to send three high school students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy in Lake Geneva to help teach leadership skills.

And the list of what the Rotary is involved continues to grow.

Each year, members go out and clean an area of Route 53 as part of the Adopt a Highway program, and the Rotary is an international partner that assists in the education and awareness of the need or polio vaccination

“We try to mix both fundraising and service projects,” said Lisa Lynch, Rotary member and past president.

The club currently has 23 members and always open to include more. The group meets every Wednesday at noon at Ats A Nice Pizza in Romeoville. “I joined simply because I wanted to give back. I watched what they were doing for this community and wanted to share that feeling of seeing good happen in the community,” said Lynch.

The group is also sponsoring Project Warmth this winter season, collecting new gloves, hats and scarves for those in need. As the group is finalizing details, check their FB page for more information on where to donate.

The international Rotary Club follows basic objectives including the development of service, high ethical standards in business and professions; the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Hermansen club to help fertilize reading garden utilizing new worm compost When spring arrives, students at Hermansen Elementary School will already be prepared to help enrich the soil in the school’s reading garden courtesy of the Will County Land Use Department.

That’s because, during a visit with the Hermansen S.O.L.A.R.R. (Students Offering Lessons About Renewable Resources) Club Wednesday, Land Use Department Environmental Educator Joan O’Keefe gave students a bin filled with peat moss and dozens of red wiggler worms so they can maintain an indoor worm compost.

“Bring in your lunch scraps.

They like decomposing fruits and vegetables like banana peels and apple cores. But for some reason they don’t like citrus,” she said.

“They eat this stuff and poop out fertilizer.”

The Hermansen S.O.L.A.R.R. Club is designed to educate its members so they can share their knowledge with fellow students, their families and the community.

Senate Democrats urge state to release motor fuel tax money Bertino-Tarrant: ‘It belongs in our district’

Will County municipalities received millions in motor fuel tax funds from the state of Illinois in 2014, but whether or not they will actually see their share of gas-tax dollars is still up in the air.

Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, each released statements Nov. 25 criticizing the governor’s veto of legislation earlier this summer that they say would have authorized the release of MFT funds and urging the Illinois House to approve a second bill that would allow the money to be released.

“The governor should have never vetoed legislation allowing the gas-tax money to be spent,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “It belongs in our district.”

stalemate and its impact on MFT funds will make it difficult for local governments to keep roads safe.

“One of the basic duties of government is to make sure emergency vehicles can get to people in need and people can get to work, school and the store when snow falls,” he said. “As winter approaches, it’s imperative the state of Illinois quits holding hostage the money our cities, townships and counties need to ensure safe winter travel.”

McGuire represents the 43rd District, which covers parts of Joliet, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Woodridge, Lockport and Crest Hill.

In September, the Illinois Senate approved a bill that would release the money. But that legislation, Senate Bill 2046, is awaiting a vote in the Illinois House.

Bertino-Tarrant noted that every Republican senator opposed the bill, which she said came at the urging of the governor.

“This whole ordeal has been frustrating,” she added.

“The money belongs to the community.”

And with winter approaching, McGuire said the state budget

Bertino-Tarrant’s 49th District covers parts of Joliet, Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Shorewood. In total, she noted that local governments in Will County received more than $21 million in MFT funds in 2014.

Among them, Joliet received $3.6 million, Bolingbrook $1.82 million, Crest Hill $515,860 and Shorewood $386,579 million.

Plainfield received $979,904 from the MFT fund in 2014, and Village Administrator Brian Murphy said that money is critical to the village’s street resurfacing program.

“Without the state funding, we would have to cut back on the

This week, we celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities -- a day where the world joins together to raise awareness about special voices

This is a time where we focus on an individual’s abilities and a time to educate our communities about how to include those of us with special needs.

This year’s theme is “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people of all abilities.” Inclusion applies to people who are diagnosed with all types of disabilities -- both visible and invisible disabilities. Take, for example, this year’s sub-theme: Including people with invisible disabilities. It was back in my time in college that I first began to better understand both the invisible disability that I was diagnosed with, as well as the difference between disabilities that are seen and unseen.

Visible disabilities are often referred to as ones that people may visually perceive and therefore usually see something we are unable to do. Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or a speech disorder

are a few common visible disabilities.

An invisible disability is one that may take a little while for others to perceive.

Learning disabilities and autism are a couple common invisible disabilities.

A good community is one that is built on inclusion, and the way we grow to have better inclusion of those of us with special needs is through acceptance. It is when we come to accept the different abilities that we show that acceptance, and inclusion can then become a regular part of our society. And, the way we come to have acceptance is through awareness.

Our communities need to first become aware of the various special needs that some individuals have. Awareness leading to acceptance and then inclusion can truly change the world.

A powerful example of acceptance and inclusion is that of my friend and previous “Special Voices” athlete Bree Bogucki. Bree, diagnosed with autism, is a fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois.

She has always had a difficult time being accepted and included in a mainstream setting within her school.

That is, until her sophomore year of high school when the game began to change.

It was the beginning of Bree’s sophomore year of high school when her older sister, Kailey, began attending college about four hours away from their home. Since Kailey had been Bree’s best friend, Bree had slipped into a depression.

For those who know Bree, she moves at a slow pace, as recalled by her mom, Mary Ellen, in a recent blog post.

In helping to combat her daughter’s depression, Mary Ellen took Bree to therapy. A few weeks after starting

therapy, Bree came home and announced she had joined the high school track team. Mary Ellen reached out to the head coach who then suggested that Bree could be his manager.

But Bree didn’t want to be a manager, she wanted to participate. She wanted to run!” Even though Bree came in last place during her first meet, her teammates, those without special needs, were proud of her. Her peers had accepted and included her as part of their community.

Fast forward to today, Bree is in her senior year of high school and added cross country to the list of mainstream sports she has participated in. She has gone from last place to be an alternate on the girl’s varsity cross-country team.

Bree added cross-country because for the first time in her mainstreamed life, she was accepted. Despite the invisible disabilities that she was diagnosed with, Bree was included.

It is with one’s own determination but also the right support, encouragement and friendship that one with invisible disabilities can be motivated to rise above any challenges that one may face along the way. Bree’s inclusive story shows us that we truly can live in a world accepting of those of us with invisible disabilities.

With several key players from last season’s team returning to the Romeoville girls basketball team, the Spartans were the favorites going into their own Thanksgiving Tournament.

While Romeoville did not disappoint the home faithful, going 4-0 and winning the tournament, it wasn’t always as relaxed as coach Julio Carrasco would have liked.

“It will be a heart attack all season,” he said of his team’s high-tempo, often chaotic offensive style. “We have some new girls we are putting into the lineup and we are just a bit off. We need to get better and we are going to. We have talent.”

Carrasco has nothing against the chaos the Spartans play with, he is just looking for a controlled chaos.

“There are times when we go on the attack and we throw the ball away and there is no reason for it,” he said. “The frustrating thing is, it is the some of the girls who have been on the team for two or three years that are doing it.

“We are always looking to make the extra pass, but when you have a two-foot shot and you are passing the ball, that’s a problem and we have to correct that. We are looking for the spectacular pass when we don’t need that. We just need to get the pass in.”

The Spartans return six players from last season’s team in the form of Lexi Marin, Skye Osborne, Diamond Dortch, Nia Harris, Anaisa Claudio and Jahari Smith.

Romeoville will have to replace the likes of Cherish Smith, Jade Warner, Perla Gutierrez and Jamie Hopper, but will look to a talented group of newcomers for talent and to the returners for leadership.

Of the returners, all but Marin and Smith are seniors this year, so the Spartans look to turn the talent, experience and leadership into a successful season and that starts with winning the Southwest Prairie Conference.

“Conference is what we are shooting for. Winning our own tournament is great, but this is about getting the team together,”

Raiders place fifth at Plainfield North invite

Last year Bolingbrook struggled in the Plainfield NorthTournament, finishing in the bronze division of the 48-team tournament.

Still, the Raiders ended up qualifying three individuals to the state meet.

This year, they took fifth place in the tournament and hope that leads to advancing to state as a team.

“We’re going to try to go to state as a team this year,” Cameron Zulfer said. “We have to stay strong and don’t mess up on the easy stuff. We need to bowl well when it counts.”

“We want to all go to state this year,” Alex Acosta said. “If we don’t go to state as a team, I want to go individually and have some guys make it with me.”

One of those three state qualifiers from last year return in Steve Stropkovic and he is hoping to use his experience as motivation.

“My whole goal this year was to get the team to state, so I’m trying to get the teamwork going,” Stropokovic said. “None of us are seniors, so we will all be back again next year. This tournament has really turned around how we started because we haven’t been having good matches. I think this is how we will play going forward.

I feel a lot better.”

Acosta and Zulfer both medaled in the tournament, finishing in 11th and 25th place, respectively, with scores of 1,322 and 1,274.

“I was happy. We had our ups and downs, but I thought we pulled through at the end,” Zulfer said. “We stuck together and kept supporting each other the whole time. I was proud of myself and we cheered each other on the whole time.”

“I just moved and stayed with the same ball,” Acosta said. “I kept gaining confidence. I’m disappointed I didn’t bowl over 200 the last game, but I did the first five. I’m happy I got a medal. I’m

Strus scores 52 en route to player of the week honors

Max Strus scored 52 points in one game last week.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Nov. 30) that Lewis University sophomore forward Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) has been selected as the GLVC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending November 29th.

He is the first Flyer to be recognized by the league since Dennis Thomas, Jr. won the award on February 14, 2011.

Strus averaged 38 points and 13 rebounds-per-game, while shooting 66.7% (14-for-21) from three-point range and 61.3% (19for-31) overall from the field in a pair of regional victories last week.

“Max’s play - not only this past week, but this season - has been outstanding,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “I am extremely happy for Max as he has worked very hard at his game and has provided great leadership for our young team.”

Hismostimpressiveperformance was a school-record 52 points on 14-for-18 shooting, including an amazing 12-for-14 from beyond the arc, in a 99-95 regional win over Northwood on Tuesday (Nov. 24) night. That performance breaks the previous school-record of 46 points, set by John Lucas during the 1969-70 campaign and ties the GLVC single-game record of 52 set by both LaVontay Fenderson (UW-Parkside, 2009) and Gary Paul (Indianapolis, 1988).

That mark also broke the previous Bennett Center singlegame record of 45 and is also the most points and three-pointers recorded by any NCAA player this season. Based on available records, Strus’ 12 three-pointers is the most trifectas by a Flyer dating back to the 1996-97 campaign.

The Hickory Hills, Ill., native

followed up that performance with a double-double of 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a 62-60 win over Wayne State on Saturday (Nov. 28).

Strus has also recorded three consecutive double-doubles, which has not been done by a Flyer since the 2007-08 campaign.

For the season, Strus is averaging a conference-best 27.4 points and 9.8 rebounds-per-game.

The Lewis University men’s basketball team used a stifling defense and knocked down 24 free throws as the Flyers gritted out a 62-60 regional victory over Wayne State at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Nov. 28) afternoon.

Strus led the charge for the Flyers as he notched his third consecutive double-double with 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Strus was 12-for-15 from the free throw line

and pitched in a team-best four assists, three blocks and two steals.

Flyer senior center Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) collected 15 points - 14 of which came in the second half - and was 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

As a team, Lewis knocked down a season-high 24 free throws, compared to nine for the Warriors.

The Flyers also limited Wayne State to shooting 35.9% (23-for-64) from the field and forced 10 turnovers leading to 60 points.

“We found a way and grinded out another one,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said.

“We made some plays down the stretch, but we just have to learn and continued to get better.

“We certainly, however, feel good about a win.”

Martinez edges Addams in OT to move on Martinez Middle School overcame a furious fourth quarter rally by Jane Addams Middle School to pull out a 38-36 IESA Class 4A 7th grade girls basketball regional championship overtime victory over the Mustangs Tuesday night.

The win moves the Vikings (18-7) to within one game of the state quarterfinals with their next contest coming at 6:30 p.m.

Sam Bunch hit a runner with 1:01 left in overtime and then added a free throw with 3.8 seconds left to secure the Martinez victory. Ni’Yah Jackson’s layup early in overtime was the only tally Jane Addams (18-5) could muster.

The Vikings built what seemed to be an insurmountable 3017 lead when Payton Reese (12 rebounds, 8 points) hit a layup off a nifty pass by Bunch. But a pair of drives by De’Ahna Richardson (16 points, 18 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 blocks), 3 free throws and a pair of layups by Yaneli Izaguirre (10 points and 8 steals), and a Jackson (10 points) runner tied the score at 30 with 1:52 left in regulation.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the way with Alina Anderson (5 points) and Larissa Ortiz (6 points, 17 rebounds) hitting for Martinez and Richardson tallying twice for Addams.

Chamber survey indicates fewer paid holidays Annual survey compiles hundreds of responses from Illinois businesses of all size The results of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday survey are in, and employers throughout the state appear to be offering slightly fewer official holidays but slightly more personal time.

According to the Illinois Chamber, results from the 2016 Annual Holiday Survey indicate how Illinois employers and their employees will be handling paid holidays in the upcoming year.

The annual survey compiles hundreds of responses from Illinois businesses of all size and industries.

“The results indicate a change in what kind of paid holiday time is being offered in 2016,” said Todd Maisch, president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber.

Maisch said the survey suggests

that the average number of paid holidays for Illinois workers is 8.8 days, compared with 8.9 in 2015. However, survey responses indicate that the average number of paid personal days is 2.9 days, slightly higher than 2015.

The chamber said its annual holiday survey is used by many Illinois businesses to decide on employees’ holiday benefits.

“It has been regarded as the standard to follow for many years,” Maisch added.

“The results provide a good indicator of what employers will be doing in 2016, and are provided by a good cross section of businesses from across Illinois.”

County board approves $482 million budget Board also approves 3.7% decrease in corporate fund tax levy The Will County Board announced that it will go into the 2015-16 fiscal year with a balanced budget.

Board members approved the $482 million budget, as well as a 3.7 percent decrease in the county’s corporate fund tax levy, at the board’s Nov. 19 meeting.

“With the economy improving and new construction starts increasing, Will County is reaping the benefits,” Chairman Jim Moustis said in new release. “We are seeing more jobs, increased retail sales, and more people calling this county their home. As a result, revenues are on the rise, and I’m pleased we are able to provide tax relief to homeowners by reducing the levy.”

The corporate fund levy was 0.6433 percent last year and accounted for almost $116 million of revenue, according to the release. This year, the board
