Hundreds attend
Halloween Fest Event was rescheduled from the previous week due to rain It was a treat for hundreds who came out to Romeoville’s Halloween Fest Oct. 30. The event was rescheduled from the previous week due to rain. But it was the perfect night for Halloween fun and the community
came out in full force finding pallets of candy waiting. The Romeoville Chamber of Commerce and village hosted the event at Village Park, where children went trick-or-treating to countless businesses who set up tables of goodies throughout the park. The Rotary Club “pirates” surprised children and adults with candy along the horse-drawn wagon trail and the first 400 children were able to pick a pumpkin.

New DuPage River Trail segments open in Bolingbrook Forest preserve, park district partnership overcomes loss of state grant By laura katauskas Bugle Staff
sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers
A project in the works since the 1990s has come to fruition, with the opening of two new DuPage River Trail segments at the Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm in Bolingbrook. When the state pulled grant funding the Forest Preserve District of Will County acquired in 2013, the Bolingbrook Park District stepped in to make the project a reality. Cindy Cain, of the Forest Preserve District of Will County, said it was always the vision of the district for the southern trail extension to link Whalon Lake and Trout Farm. Upon completion of the Whalon Lake trail loop, the northern trail extension was requested by the village of Bolingbrook in 2008. When the forest preserve district secured the grant for the northern trail extension, the project moved forward with engineering beginning in 2014. When a $150,000 state grant was suspended earlier this year, Bolingbrook Park District officials stepped in and agreed to contribute $110,600. Construction started in spring 2015 and was completed this month. “Bolingbrook Park District and the Forest Preserve District of Will County have a long history of working together to improve the quality of life for the residents of Bolingbrook and Will County,” Park District Board Vice President Sue Vastalo said. “The Hidden Oaks Conservation Area is an excellent
example of this partnership. The Forest Preserve District of Will County provided funding to assist with the preservation of open space at James Boan Woods and the construction of Hidden Oaks Nature Center.” Forest Preserve Board President Suzanne Hart thanked the park district for its contribution to the $456,000 project, which included two new boardwalks connected to an existing bridge over the DuPage River and linking the Will County Forest Preserve District’s loop trail at Whalon Lake with Trout Farm and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Greene Valley Preserve via Paxson Drive. These two critical links give walkers, runners and bicyclists access to a much larger northern Illinois trail network. The northern trail extension leads to the forest preserve’s Veterans Memorial/ Centennial Trail and the state’s Illinois and Michigan Canal Trail. The southern trail extension links to the park district’s Lily Cache Greenway, the ComEd Greenway and more sections of the DuPage River Trail. Cain said these trails provide area residents increased access to preserves and adjacent parks and connects existing trails, which improves recreational, fitness and commuting options. She added that it is common for the forest preserve to partner with other governmental entities to further provide recreational and educational opportunities and facilities for the
public. “Partnerships also enhance our chances of getting grants,” Cain said. “By working together with other governmental entities, we make sure that projects complement each other and taxpayer dollars are being used wisely.” For instance, the forest preserve has partnered with all levels of government, including the U.S. Forest Service at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie on an access site for the Wauponsee Glacial Trail. The Forest Preserve District of Will County has also partnered with the state of Illinois on maintenance of the Illinois & Michigan State Trail and the city of Joliet on numerous trail projects throughout the city. The Forest Preserve District of Will County said it has plans to collaborate with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County on additional connections between Whalon Lake and trails in DuPage County. Hart also noted that the Will County Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners has worked in recent years to expand the district’s trail system from 7 miles of deer paths in 1985 to 127 miles of quality trails in 2015. This came thanks to the support of Will County taxpayers who approved two bond referendums in 1999 and 2005. As to which trails are the most popular, Cain said, “I would say they all are. If we build them, people use them.” To find out more about upcoming events or to locate preserves and trails in the Will County Forest Preserve District, visit ReconnectWithNature.org.

Women’s group targets goals through novel concept New local chapter of 100+ Women Who Care of Will County are banding together By laura katauskas Bugle Staff
sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BugleNewspapers
The concept is a simple one but its results are great. A new local chapter of 100+ Women Who Care of Will County are banding together by trying to gather 100 women in the area who can donate $100 to a local charity quarterly and, in essence, make the donation level skyrocket. “When you donate $100 to a charity, you often wonder if you’re actually making a difference,” said founder Maribeth Carlson. “When 100 people donate $100 at the same time, the group accomplishes collectively what few of us could on our own. A $10,000 donation can enable a charity to complete a project or attain a goal that had been out of reach.” The group began a few months ago and has already doubled its membership, with members joining from Romeoville, Plainfield, Lockport, Mokena, Homer Glen, New Lenox and Frankfort. However, the group is still looking to grow. Carlson said women interested in joining the group can attend its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at
Mullets, 14903 S. Bell Road, Homer Glen. “Right here in our own backyard there are people in need and we, simply put, can help,” Carlson said. “Will County has so many wonderful local charities who serve our community, but many of them struggle. When I first learned of 100 Women Who Care, I was inspired by the simplicity of the concept. Knowing how difficult it is for local non-profits to raise the funds required to carry on their work, and how easily even the best volunteer’s intentions can be thwarted by today’s busy schedules, 100 Women Who Care seemed to be the perfect solution.” As the first member to join the group, Beth Rodgers said she did so because of her belief that people in the community need to get involved in order to make a difference. “The concept of 100+ allows for me to personally meet the women who are representing and are passionate about their nonprofit charities, and that really does make a difference for me,” said Rodgers. “I can ask questions and really learn about where my donation is going and how it was used. The process is effortless, the concept is perfect, and the results—well the results
are making big differences in all different types of charities right here in our own communities.” Member Cherie McWherter, from Lockport, agrees. “It is unique in that you are joining together with other women from your community and you are making an impact on a local nonprofit that may never get the publicity that the big charities do,” McWherter said. “Our first two charities were Shady Oaks Camp and Lincolnway Special Recreation Association I have lived in Lockport almost 30 years and while I had heard of Shady Oaks I had no idea what they really did and what their needs were and I had never heard of LWSRA. McWherter said both charities are near and dear to some of the groups members, adding that both do great work in the community and were very appreciative of the money 100+ Women donated. The group donated $600 to Shady Oaks. The group recently made their second donation, presenting a $1,600 check to LWSRA. The association provides special recreation services for individuals with disabilities. Services are provided through a cooperative agreement with the Frankfort, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, Peotone and Wilmington Island park districts. LWSRA programs are
designed for individuals, preschool through adult, who have recreation needs that are not met by regular park district programs. “LWSRA is honored and very grateful to the 100+ Women Who Care of Will County for their donation,” said Keith Wallace, executive director of LWSRA. “We will apply this donation to our scholarship fund for those individuals who are in need of financial help to participate in our programs. Last year, we gave out over $12,000 in scholarship funds to our participants in need. Thank you again to the 100+ Women members who chose to support LWSRA.” All 100+ Women members and teams make a pledge to donate $100 four times a year. At meetings, members nominate charities, three are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation, the members vote on which charity to support. Once the winning charity is announced, everyone writes a $100 check on the spot directly for that charity. All charities nominated
must be located in, and serve, Will County and must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. “I love the fact that you get to vote on a charity that is presented by a member,” McWherter said. “That just gives it such a personal touch, more than giving to the Red Cross or some huge organization like that. We have the opportunity to really make a difference to small local charities in our neighborhood. She added that the personal donation is not that large but can make a significant impact when grouped together with others. “In just two meetings we more than doubled our contribution,” McWherter said. “I can’t wait to see what November holds, and I can’t wait until the day that we donate $10,000! “It’s great for women that want to help out locally but realistically just don’t have a lot of extra time to do that. I predict big things for 100+ Women Who Care in Will County.” For more information, visit www.100wwcwill.org or find the group on Facebook.

Area man guilty of attempting to support ISIL Khan, a U.S. citizen from Bolingbrook, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years A Bolingbrook man pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge of attempting to travel overseas in order to join the Islamic State terrorist group. Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The organization is identified in a written plea agreement as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Khan, a U.S. citizen from southwest suburban Bolingbrook, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr. did not immediately schedule a sentencing hearing. A status hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 11:30 a.m. Khan has been detained in federal custody since he
was arrested Oct. 4, 2014, at O’Hare International Airport by members of the Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force. According to the plea agreement, Khan began using the Internet no later than February 2014 to obtain introductions to ISIL members in Syria and assistance with traveling there to join the terrorist group. The plea agreement states that Khan spoke with ISIL members to coordinate the logistics of his admission into ISIL-controlled territory. Khan admitted in the plea agreement that he knew ISIL had been designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization. Upon arriving in Syria, Khan intended to work under the direction and control of ISIL and be required to take
any assignment ISIL gave him, according to the plea agreement. The guilty plea was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; John P. Carlin, ssistant Attorney General for National Security; and Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent-inCharge of the Chicago Office of the FBI. The Joint Terrorism Task Force is comprised of Special Agents of the FBI, officers of the Chicago Police Department, and representatives from an additional 20 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations and the Illinois State Police also provided significant assistance in the investigation.

In October, we celebrated National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time for us to learn about the many and varied contributions special voices of workers with with Daniel disabilities; a Smrokowski time to focus on an individual’s abilities and gifts; and a time when we educate our communities about how companies should see us as individuals who bring our individual skills and gifts to the workplace. Take for example, one of my employers — this newspaper. In January 2014, the Bugle hired me as both a freelance reporter and a columnist. They recognized my skills as a journalist and didn’t see my disabilities as a barrier. This is one of many recent companies who are acknowledging how those of us with special needs can contribute to the workplace. This year marks the 70th anniversary since the first observance of the National Disability Employment Awareness Month in 1945. The theme for this year is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy. In celebration of this year’s theme, it’s vital that employers recognize that our disabilities are just one part of who we are. Employers need to learn about the various skills and gifts that we can offer the workforce. Earlier this year, I had the
opportunity to go on a job interview at a local video retail store. I was able to get this job interview because of being a client at the Helping Hand Center, a local agency that benefits children and adults with disabilities. After I received a phone call from the store’s manager, I called the community job placement coordinator at the Helping Hand Center. An hour before the job interview, we met at a nearby cafe to practice some mock interview questions. This past summer, “The Shriver Report Snapshot: Insight Into Intellectual Disabilities in the 21st Century” reported that only 56 percent of Americans personally know someone with an intellectual disability, while 42 percent of Americans have no personal contact with a person with an intellectual disability. It was in partnership that The Shriver Report and Special Olympics launched a new challenge called “PLAY - Let’s Change The Game.” Its mission is to encourage all people to play, learn, accept and say “yes” together. The goal is to change the world to have common ground among people of all abilities. Similar to the new Let’s Change The Game campaign, the Best Buddies organization has a campaign to hire people with special needs. “I’m In To Hire” is Best Buddies’ new campaign that promotes the business benefits of hiring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to the campaign’s website. I’m In To Hire motivates employers to create a more inclusive workplace. This campaign was founded by Best Buddies International and supported by the Institute for Corporate Productivity. The I’m In To Hire campaign helps to unify the voices of employers and employees alike in support of hiring those of us with special needs. The campaign notes that 85 percent of people with
developmental disabilities do not have a paid community job. The campaign aspires to change the world to see the value that we bring to the workforce. Similar to the I’m In To Hire campaign, my goal through this column and through the podcasts at Special Chronicles, is to unify the voices of those of us with special needs so the world can better understand the abilities that we do have. According to the National Core Indicators from 2012-13, intellectual and developmental disabilities include but are not limited to Down syndrome, Autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other undiagnosed intellectual and developmental disabilities. The #ImInToHire campaign reports that 73 percent of business who hire employees with special needs have a positive experience. Anyone can pledge their support of the #ImInToHire campaign at www. imintohire.org. In doing so, you will not only be spreading awareness but you’ll also be recognizing the contributions that all of us can bring to an inclusive workplace. At another of my recent employers, my supervisors and coworkers had a positive experience. Some of those who I worked with had experience working with those of us with special needs. At the same time, some may not have had the best understanding of the gifts that we bring to the workplace. A few months ago, a coworker approached me and shared how they felt sorry that my friends and I had special needs. In an effort not to judge this coworker, the person might not yet have a good understanding of how to work with someone who has special needs. In another incident, this same coworker had spoken up for me when

Seniors in action in area As a senior, I am constantly reminded and amazed at the performance and unselfishness of my senior friends. This particular story is about two wonderful senior ladies in our “Golden Ager” club in Romeoville. Their names are Joanne and Sue. They are always quiet and in the background. They do not want or need recognition. Every year around Christmas, they collect new clothes for infants, children, teenagers, etc.,
and white socks for the military. The gifts go to the Morningstar Mission in Joliet. These particular ladies (and others) come from the Carillon and Grand Haven area. They continually make life better for others. They have a sense of purpose. Age does not matter. The example of seniors do count. Indifference, because of age, is abandoned. Seniors are proud of their age. They proudly carry experience. They hope to be an
example for children to follow. The true stories of long ago, are – depression (lack of home and food), wars fought honorably without questioning, respect for all human life, privilege to go to college, total honesty and self sacrifice, and so much more. I salute my senior friends. May their light always shine bright for everyone to enjoy. May senior guidance be always and forever. Shirlee J. Pergler Romeoville Resident

Offense Stagnant Raider defense solid, but offense cannot score in loss
By TORY DEAN for the bugle
www.buglenewspapers.com @Voyager_Sport
The last time the Bolingbrook Raiders were on the Red Hawks field was in the 2011 IHSA semifinals; when they beat the Red Hawks 22-19 on their way to win state. This year Bolingbrook snuck into the playoffs by beating then number one ranked Homewood- Flossmoor on a last second field goal giving them a playoff berth. On Friday night the teams met again in the playoffs, only this time things would not go Bolingbrook’s way. The RedHawks (9-1) beat the Raiders (5-5) 14-7 in what was a battle of two great defenses. “We knew this defense would have to take us a long way, because our offense is young and inexperienced,” Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow said. “We weren’t able to duplicate the same offensive output as last week, give credit to Central they’re the DVC champs.” Sixth-seeded Naperville

points scored by Raider offense in loss
Central hasn’t lost a first-round game in five straight appearances dating back to 2008, and Friday night they would keep the trend going. Quarterback Conor Joyce would look to his top target and future Iowa Hawkeye Emmanuel Rugamba early and often. Bolingbrook’s defense looked to keep Rugamba in check throughout the night, and at times throughout the course of the game the Raider defense seemed to do just that. Rugamba would finish the game with 7 receptions for 88 yards. At the end of the first quarter, Joyce looked to target Rugamba on a curl route when Trevon Anderson made a great play on the ball and would pick off Joyce’s pass and return it for six. Those would be the only points the Raiders would score as the offense would struggle to score all night. The second quarter was a defensive standoff as both teams would be held scoreless.

LEWIS
Lewis volleyball earns Halloween win Flyers beat William Jewell after dropping match one day earlier to No. 6 Rockhurst Lewis’ five seniors recorded a combined 32 kills on Saturday (Oct. 31) afternoon as No. 21 Lewis women’s volleyball swept William Jewell 25-20, 25-21, 2521 on Senior Day in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Neil Carey Arena. Senior Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had 10 kills and five digs. Senior Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) recorded
FOOTBALL | from page 13 Bolingbrook quarterback Michael Freeze would throw his first of two picks in the final three minutes of the quarter. The RedHawks were unable to capitalize on the pick as Bolingbrook’s defense had a goal line stand just before the half would end. At the end of the half Bolingbrook only accumulated
seven kills and a career-high 15 digs. Senior Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) pitched in five kills and 12 digs. Senior Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) added five kills and two blocks. Senior Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) totaled three kills and five blocks. All five were honored after the match in a ceremony.
“Every coach thinks they have this amazing group of seniors but this group really is special,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “They work hard and really embody Lewis volleyball.” Lewis trailed the second set 18-16 before an 8-1 run helped give the frame to the home team. Brennan and Kroeker were serving for the majority of the push. In the third set, Lewis never trailed again after taking a 17-15 lead thanks to a 7-1 run midway through the frame. Defensively, junior libero Nicole
Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) totaled 20 digs to help Lewis out-dig William Jewell 63-60. The Flyers improve to 23-3 (112 GLVC). William Jewell falls to 7-19 (1-12 GLVC). Lewis returns to action on Friday (Nov. 6) at Quincy in a 7 p.m. first serve. The game will air online on GLVCSN. A game earlier fell 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 16-14) on Friday (Oct. 30) evening to No. 8 Rockhurst at Neil Carey Arena in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match. It was Lewis’ sixth straight
five-set match. Offensively, sophomore middle hitter Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) was the story. She hit .615 with 26 kills on 39 swings with two errors. “Aly and McKenna’s (Pierson) connection has been up and down and they worked really hard this past week and it showed tonight,” Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Aly is one of those hitters that knows how to manage the ball when the set isn’t perfect and setters will go back to hitters like that.”
12 yards passing as Freeze and his receivers weren’t on the same page. Jeremiah Lebron was the Raiders leading rusher with 7 carries for 35 yards. Dangelo Colon had 5 rushes for 20 yards. The Raider defense held their own in the first half stopping Central’s high powered offense from scoring. Lucas Warren lead the way
with five solo tackles; one being for a loss, and a sack. Tuf Borland had eight tackles and three assists. The momentum would switch in the second half as Joyce and the RedHawk offense got things going. Joyce finished the game 11 for 20 for 175 yards passing and a pair of interceptions, also adding 23 rushes for 106 yards
and a touchdown. Joyce did majority of the damage through the air in the third quarter and in the fourth he let his legs takeover. The RedHawks got Luke Brady going as well. Brady would put his team on the board in the third as he would score on a four yard rush to tie the game at seven. Brady finished the game with 11 carries
for 42 yards and a touchdown. Despite giving up two interceptions and two missed field goals; Central would put everything together on their final drive as Joyce would rush his way into the end zone to seal the game. Naperville Central will move on to play Warren (6-4) in the second round of the IHSA playoffs.

SOCCER
Raiders raise expectations with strong season By Scott Taylor sports editor
staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports
The Bolingbrook soccer program has again raised expectations. After its first regional championship in 23 years, the Raiders fell to top-seed Naperville North 1-0 in overtime at the Metea Valley Sectional semifinal.
“We had a great season,” Bolingbrook coach Jamie Clemmons said. “It would have been nice to go to a sectional final. I felt like this year’s team was the team that could get that far. Unfortunately, we will always be in this sectional. My guys fought every minute and every second and I couldn’t be more proud of them.” The tough playing conditions may have actually helped the
Raiders. “I figured it would work for both of us,” Clemmons said. “I thought the ball would skip through a lot. It actually helped us. It is hard to put the ball on net when it is wet.” Naperville North scored its goal with 10 seconds left in the first overtime. While the Raiders had a chance in the second overtime, it was hard for them to answer with their leading scorer

Bolingbrook’s Luis Flores was All-State for the second year in a row.
out for the end of regulation and the end of overtime with an injury. “We talked at the end of regulation and said whoever made the first mistake was going to come away with the loss,” Clemmons said. “They got the one chance and they buried it. “It hurt losing Luis. He was diagnosed with a concussion and missed the end of overtime. He takes a bit of the dynamic away. I thought their physical play kind of took away his ability to get anything done. We played as hard as we could as long as we could and it just wasn’t enough.” The defense, which is going to return in tact next year, proved its success throughout the year wasn’t a fluke by shutting down the Huskies for much of the game. “We had 16 shutouts coming into tonight and only gave up 14 goals,” Clemmons said. “To hold Naperville North to a 1-0 overtime goal is pretty impressive
for my guys in the back.” That defense appears to be the backbone for next year’s squad. “Our core defense is all back, our other forward, Anguel Sanchez is back and a couple of our midfielders are back. We’re losing a lot of goals and a good leader in Erick Gonzalez at center mid, but we have a lot of pieces coming back. I think we will be right back where we are again, but it is a tough sectional to win.” While they have many returning, losing Flores, who was an All-State selection again this year, will leave big shoes to fill. “He is going to be a tough guy to replace,” Clemmons said of Flores. “He had 18 goals this year and was half of our production. He will go on to the next level and will be a big loss.” Still, the expectations are high heading into next year. “I think now that they have a taste for it, they are a little more hungry,” Clemmons said.

Raiders, Spartans compete at sectional By mark gregory SPoRTS RePoRTeR

Sophomore dan Ford was the No. 2 runner for Romeoville.
The weather conditions Saturday were no walk in the park during the IHSA sectional cross country meets across the state, but that was fine, because walking was the last thing on their minds. Local runners attacked the courses and braved the elements for a shot at advancing to the state finals next week at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Valley View School District will not have anyone compete next week, but it had several race at the sectional level. On the girls side, Bolingbrook’s team was 10th, led by Marissa Caputo, who was 24th in 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Also scoring for the Raiders were Arianna Amill (38th, 19:38.72), Yulissa Izaguirre (58th, 20:19.69), Madison Shroda (62nd, 20:29.52) and Natalia Hernandez (66th, 20:31.75). Alyssa Kucan (73rd, 20:40.53) and Anna Mugg (92nd, 21:29.34) also competed. On the guys side, Romeoville placed 11th, as Ian Irvine led the way in 51st with a time of 16:35.78. “This wasn’t the greatest, but
we knew how to battle through this,” Irvine said. He was followed by scorers Dan Ford (56th, 16:44.10), Zeke Cabanas (57th, 16:44.70), Justin Suits (64th, 16:50.85) and David Andrews (85th, 17:31.29). Cabanas said the conditions were not great on his back. “It was one of the hardest races I ran all year considering I have back problems,” he said. “The regional race at Hamel Woods was really bumpy and this made that look flat, so it really kicked my butt. The creek was what messed up my back and the last loop was a huge migraine.” Ford was proud of how far the Spartans advanced. “It was great for us to be here, placing fourth in the regionals,” he said.
The winning team at sectional was Sandburg, who is not only the top ranked team in Illinois, but among the top nationally, something that will drive Ford, who is a sophomore. “It’s an honor to race with them,” he said. “They are one of the best in the nation. This teaches me to keep working and get used these conditions. I have two more years and I expect to be up with Sandburg.” Carlos Ibanez (87th, 17:34.51) and Tony Vodicka (112th, 18:08.03) also raced. Bolingbrook had a trio compete, as Bjorn Shroda placed 65th in 16:49.83, followed by Caleb Robertson (81st, 17:08.78) and Joshua Beyler (82nd, 17:09.53).
