Working to expand bike trails and walking paths throughout Romeoville, the village has been taking steps to secure funding to make it happen.

Earlier this year, the village applied for funding for additional trails under the Transportation Alternatives Program, including a path from Weber Road to Airport Road with a leg to the Interstate 55 frontage through the existing ComEd right of way.

The project is estimated at $1.3

million with TAP picking up 80 percent of the cost with federal funds and the village responsible for 20 percent. Romeoville officials have been informed that the project has been tentatively approved for funding by CMAP for Federal Fiscal Year 2017.

The primary goal of this project is to expand bicycle and pedestrian access within the area west of Weber Road and north of Airport Road. The proposed route is part of the Northeastern Illinois Regional Greenways and Trails Plan and also included in the village’s Bike Trail Master Plan.

“This is a much needed improvement in our community and we are fortunate to be receiving 80 percent of the funds needed for this project through the federal program,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak.

During construction, there will be essentially no affect to private properties since the proposed path will be constructed within the existing ComEd right of way. Construction traffic will be prohibited from using local streets and dust control will be a requirement of the construction activities.

Though the weather was a bit wet, it was no damper on the spirits of those attending the Relay for Life in Romeoville Saturday.

Community members, cancer survivors, caregivers, local politicians and friends all came out to stand up and fight for cancer research at Romeoville’s annual Relay for Life with this year’s super

What matters is how heartwarming it is to celebrate.”

Bolingbrook will soon be home to another hotel in its Lily Cache Business Park.

Preliminary plans submitted and approved by the village show for a four-story extendedstay hotel, a Marriott Residence Inn, to be built at 135

Remington Blvd., with future space dedicated for a possible medical/professional office building.

The area for the new project is to be constructed on 8.8 acres of land that is currently vacant.

The proposed plan shows 3.3 acres dedicated to a 103 room hotel that will be built on the north side of Remington Boulevard, immediately north of the Hilton Garden Inn currently

being constructed.

A 60,000 square foot professional office building is being proposed for the approximate 5.5 acre lot next to the hotel.

According to a planning and zoning report, staff supports the request since the future medical office building would be in close proximity to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and has less of an impact on the area than a warehouse-type facility.

This will be the second Marriott hotel to be built in Bolingbrook.

The first hotel, Springhill Suites Chicago Bolingbrook, is located at 125 Remington Blvd.

Plans remain on target for the expansion of the Joliet Junior College’s Romeoville campus.

After finalizing plans early this year, crews are set to break ground Sept. 8 on a new 50,000-squarefoot expansion, long considered a priority by administration in hopes to match the explosive growth of the area with academic offerings.

Since its inception, the Romeoville campus has seen an explosion in enrollment, some 45 percent over the past 10 years.

It is one of two of its priority projects outlined in the updated 2013 JJC Master Plan, including the construction of a multipurpose facility on its main campus in Joliet.

JJC has earmarked $45 million in bonds and a $4 capital assessment fee increase to fund both priority projects. Since October 2014,

Demonica Kemper Architects has worked with college committees to assess the specific programming needs in each facility, ensuring that the buildings will meet end-users’ needs and will be constructed within budget, according to school officials.

The Romeoville campus, first built in 1993, is located just off Weber Road and 135th Street. The expansion will include a new twostory, nearly 50,000-square-footfacility and will serve as the new entrance to the campus directly facing 135th Street.

The lower level will be dedicated to student support services including career counseling, guidance, a bookstore, and cafeteria.

The second level will house science laboratories and classroom space.

An executive summary of the plan shows that the 40-acre site at the Romeoville campus should,

according to school officials, more than adequately accommodate the needed academic addition(s) to the west of the existing one-story building, as well as an addition to the east for new student development space. While the existing parking capacity is currently meeting the needs of this location, both parking lots could easily be expanded to the west for future capacity needs, according to the plan.

In essence, the new Romeoville expansion is being designed to make it a self-sufficient campus similar to its main campus in Joliet.

In addition, JJC recently broke ground for the Multipurpose Center on its main campus, which will be constructed in Joliet on the southwest side of Main Campus adjacent to the athletic fields, will feature two levels, two basketball courts; configuration options for competition basketball and

volleyball tournaments; portable batting cages; three-lane indoor track; bleachers and seating (to accommodate both athletic competitions and graduation ceremonies); athletic staff office spaces; presentation room; and conditioning space.

The multipurpose facility is envisioned to include athletics, physical education, and conference center and corporate training space and will also be made available for community use.

Estimated completion for both projects is expected in 2017.

Valley View says revamped strategic plan stresses communication, accountability New strategic plan has five goals Following months of conversations with faculty, administrators, staff and the community, Valley View School District 365U has completed a “refresh” of its strategic plan that emphasizes communication and accountability.

“When we shared the first ever VVSD Strategic Plan with our community in May 2013, we indicated we intended to closely monitor the plan’s goals and adjust the plan where needed,” said Superintendent James Mitchem Jr. “Even as we continued to implement the plan, we identified a need to refocus.”

Included in the five-year “refresh” is a more concise rewrite of the basic mission of the school district.

VVSD’s “refreshed” mission is “to empower all learners to be college and career ready and to develop, grow and achieve as productive citizens.”

That mission will be supported by a “refreshed” vision that reads,

“We will hold high expectations and provide collaborative supports to ensure academic, social and emotional success for ALL students regardless of race, gender, income, geography, disability or native language.”

“The driver of our mission has not changed. The four Pillars (Rigor, Assessment, Instruction and Accountability) represent the fundamental work of our organization,” Mitchem said.

“But we have added our core values and corresponding commitments to ensure that we bring the mission and vision to life.”

The refreshed plan includes implementation of an easy-toread report card communicating VVSD’s progress in meeting its commitments that will be available to all stakeholders through the VVSD website.

According to the district, five goals in the new strategic plan are: placing an emphasis on student growth and achievement; providing optimal learning environments; maintaining a high-impact work force; developing strong family and community partnerships; and

utilizing physical, technological and financial resources with fidelity and integrity.

District officials said each goal flows into several strategies with specific “critical indicators” that will be constantly monitored with results reported to the community on a regular basis.

“As educators, our fundamental task is to evaluate our impact on student learning,” Mitchem said. “Because our efforts are centered around research-based best practices and data-driven monitoring, our new District Scorecard will focus our efforts so we truly know and understand that impact.”

Initially, the “scorecard” will reveal the baseline, or starting point, for each specific measurement. As data becomes available, the district said the scorecard will be updated.

“It is our intent to increase transparency to all stakeholders with this living document as we continually strive to find new ways to best serve our students and families,” Mitchem said.

Garden Club looks to beautify BHS courtyards Plants purchased with Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant Thanks to grants from Valley View School District Nutrition Services and Lowe’s, the Garden Club at Bolingbrook High School has launched projects to beautify three BHS courtyards and expand the school’s vegetable garden.

“I’m excited,” said Garden Club co-advisor Shino Koshy who is a special education teacher teaching chemistry at BHS. “The kids will be very busy.”

Most of the club’s time this fall will be spent sprucing up the courtyards after the VVSD Maintenance Department team, most notably Sam Gonzalez, planted several thousand dollars worth of plants purchased with a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant. When they’re done, each courtyard will have a fountain, sprinklers, bird baths and bird feeders as well as benches built by students in Ryan Altenburg’s career and technical education classes.

On Sept. 9, Boy Scouts from Troops 35 and 75, as well as National Honor Society, Interact and Student Ambassador volunteers, will join Garden Club members in adding mulch to the

“That’s pretty much what we’re going to accomplish this fall in the courtyards,” Koshy said. “It should look good.”

At that point, the Garden Club’s attention will turn to the vegetable garden, located between the football stadium and the baseball field, which will be expanded from two to six raised beds.

The hope is to remove the grass, build the beds and construct paths beforewintertimesothateverything is ready for planting in the spring.

Volunteers from Lowe’s will provide some support, but Koshy is looking for landscaping, gravel installation

and bed construction help from the community as well.

“It’s in a high traffic area so if we have the money, we’re hoping to be able to contain the area in a fence,” she added.

Once completed, the six beds will provide herbs, tomatoes, peppers, carrots and much more to be used in the BHS cafeteria.

Perhaps a grape vine or two.

“As of now the plan is to have each bed dedicated to one thing.

That’s my thinking. But the kids may come up with a different plan,” Koshy said.

As I watch the news on TV I am impressed with the courage firefighters (men and women) and policemen and women face every day. When they put on their uniforms in the morning, they do not know if they will be home safe with their families at night.

The firefighters and police are examples of veterans that go out into battle. At the end of their day, their motto has always been “all lives matter.” They are the “real deal.” They DO SERVE AND PROTECT. In our village of Romeoville in 1984, 17 firefighters from our village and surrounding villages were killed. The Union Oil in Lemont exploded. My home actually shook.

All of my pictures fell off the walls. Our

local Jewel food store in Spartan Square was demolished. Many residents in our area had structure and physical problems for many years.

A few weeks back, I had the privilege and honor to witness the closing of our first #1 Fire House in Romeoville. There was a short ceremony performed. All of our current firefighters and former fire chiefs were in attendance and saluted our flag as it went down. The flag was presented to Nancy Hackett, President of our Romeoville Historical Society.

She will place the flag in a glass case and store it in our museum. There were tears of appreciation for what this flag symbolized.

In attendance were Al Stadelmaeir, Carl Churulo and our new Chief Kent Adams. These men built the

path for future firefighters. Also in attendance was Brian Clancy Trustee and bystanders. They all have a “code of honor” as messengers for everyone to emulate.

Firefighters and policemen and women died during 9/11. They all deserve our respect and praise. The news of today tell of gallant men and women fighting fires and crimes to keep people safe. Their spirit is strong. Their fundraisers are always attended by grateful residents. They are, and always have been a band of brothers and sisters that do have a sense of community, with a sense of togetherness.

They all deserve a TRIBUTE TO COURAGE that will be eternal.

Together with the Special Olympics World Games and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Shriver Report Snapshot: Insight Into Intellectual Disabilities in the 21st Century had revealed that we are a nation in the midst of change.

Together Shriver Media and Special Olympics International released this groundbreaking poll that was supported by the Richard and Cecilia Attias Foundation and was conducted online by Harris Poll in July 2015.

The Shriver Report Snapshot revealed that we are a nation divided. It also says that, while exposure to those of us with intellectual disabilities increases acceptance and positivity, it is a lack of exposure to us that drives fear and misunderstanding of what it is like to live with an intellectual disability.

One of my missions through this Special Voices Column and through the podcasts on Special Chronicles is to help build more understanding about those of us with disabilities.

It was in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ADA that Special Olympics International launched a new campaign and challenge called PLAY — Let’s Change The Game. At a press conference that I attended at the Special Olympics 2015 World Games in Los Angeles, Maria Shriver, founder of Shriver Media and a board member at Special Olympics International, discussed this campaign.

This campaign is simple, she explained. Its mission is encourage all people to play, learn, accept, and say “yes” together. The goal is to change the world to have common ground among people of all abilities.

“This Shriver Report Snapshot reveals that experience, inclusion and intervention are the ways to combat isolation, intolerance and injustice,” said Janet Froetscher, CEO of Special Olympics, adding, “all of us have the ability to change the game and create inclusion in our communities.”

It is this inclusion and acceptance that is the gamechanging ingredient that will lead to changing attitudes toward those of us with intellectual disabilities.

One of the goals of the ADA is for us to have economic self-sufficiency and to live independently.

The Shriver Report Snapshot reports that there are only 56 percent of Americans who personally know someone with an intellectual disability, and 42 percent of Americans have no personal contact with someone with an intellectual disability.

“The more we can increase contact, the more we can increase experiences young people will go on to start to work, they’ll hire people with intellectual disabilities, they’ll have them as their friends, [and] they’ll be in their social circle,” said Maria Shriver.

Those who personally know someone with an intellectual disability have a 92 percent chance of having their children in the same class with a child with an intellectual disability. At the same time they have a 53 percent

chance of having their child date and a 47 percent chance of marrying someone with an intellectual disability, according to the Shriver Report Snapshot.

This shows us that, although the ADA helps toward self-sufficiency, we still have more work to do to encourage others to accept us. As Maria Shriver explains we need to figure out how others can accept us. Once we have acceptance, we can break down the barriers and therefore hearts and minds will be opened. Together we will then have common ground among all people.

Those of us with intellectual disabilities, desire to have full participation in all parts of life, including being able to vote in elections.

More than one in five Americans, or 22 percent, believe that adults with intellectual disabilities should not be allowed to vote in elections, the Shriver Report Snapshot reports.

Maria Shriver said that she is hopeful that people will remember those statistics and the simple acronym, “PLAY,” a call to action to people across the country to Play, Learn, Accept, and say “Yes” to including those of us with intellectual disabilities, and talk to their children about it.

Shriver had mentioned that in most other parts of the world, these numbers are much smaller.

Together Special Olympics International and Shriver Media hope that this snapshot will ignite change because of the information and inspiration that it provides.

It has a clear call to action.

To change the game so that the world knows: we bring value to humanity.

For as many years as he has roamed the Bolingbrook sidelines, head coach John Ivlow has never been afraid to put a young, inexperienced team to the test.

Subsequently, he is never willing to blame that youth for a loss.

“We never use youth as an excuse,” Ivlow said. “Sure, we would like to have the older guys, but remember, these guys will be a year older next year and we will probably look a lot better on offense then. We will look better on offense a couple of weeks from now.”

The Raiders went into Glenbard West Saturday afternoon in what was the first varsity game in the careers of many newcomers and fell

to the Hilltoppers 28-7.

Bolingbrook’s only offensive starter returning from last season’s team was offensive lineman John Ivlow, son of the head coach.

After a lengthy weather delay, the Raiders found themselves behind early when, on the Hilltoppers’ first possession, quarterback Brian Cochrane found wide receiver Chrystian Maciorowski for a 22yard touchdown with 7 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

Seconds before the opening quarter expired, Sam Brodner tallied the first of his two touchdowns on the day, giving West a 14-0 advantage.

Raiders regroup at tournament

The Bolingbrook girls volleyball team got a fast test out of the gate as it competed in the Plainfield North tournament over the weekend.

The Raiders dropped the first two matches in pool play, but played better volleyball on the second day, going 1-2 on the day.

Both losses went to three sets.

Bolingbrook opened the day with a 21-25, 26-24, 18-25 loss to Plainfield South. That was followed by a 28-26, 28-26 win over Oswego then a 24-26, 25-22, 23-25 loss to Batavia.

The Raiders had Batavia on the ropes in the final match of the day, but with the score tied at 23-23, the critical point and side out went to Batavia on what appeared to be an errant touch call on a ball the Bulldogs hit out of bounds.

After the contest, both coaches agreed it was not a touch, but head coach Andrea Bercot said it is a learning lesson for Bolingbrook.

“When it comes to a call like that and you feel you were robbed, it hurts because you were doing what you needed to in creating momentum,” she said. “But, we can’t put ourselves in that situation. We need to close out the game.”

Bercot said there were a lot of good lessons to come out of the weekend.

“We switched our lineup in the first game today without ever practicing it. I love tournaments because you can do that and there is more of a freedom to figure out what is going on,” she said. “We had some people in some positions they haven’t practiced and we had to make adjustments based on the first games. We had some girls step up for us.”

One of those players that stepped up was junior Jessica Diaz.

“She was our right side yesterday and we put her in the middle today and she had a good attitude about it and her play was one of the reasons our offense looked smoother today,” Bercot said.

One of the other reasons the offense had chances was the passing and setting combination of senior libero Amanda Perry and senior setter Jennilyn Cave “Amanda and Jennilyn were very consistent all tournament for us,” Bercot said. “With the passing and setting, the two of them created a consistent opportunity for our offense.”

The seniors are both happy to get into the regular season.

“We worked our hardest and the results were just not there for us,” Perry said. “We had a lot of new positions in these games and I am looking to move into the season with what we learned.”

Cave says the team needs to focus more and focus sooner.

“We need to work a lot

harder in practice. Seeing the competition was an eye opener and we feel like we had a good day (Saturday), but we still have to brush up the edges of the offense and defense,” she said. “We need to start from the beginning of the game. We are starting from the middle of the game and it seems like we don’t really want it that bad on our side of the net and we have to change that attitude real quick.”

Perry and Cave return with senior Melanie Barrios to pace the team this season. Joining the run will be senior outside hitter Olivia Simpson and 6-foot, 1-inch freshman Natalie Mitchem.

“We have a very dedicated group this year,” Bercot said.

“Most of the senior class has been playing together since junior high. So far, the leadership from our seniors has proved to push the players in the whole program to have a sense of pride and excellence about the sport. I expect a very competitive season from this team.”

BOYS SOCCER Bolingbrook won a pair of games in the Windy City Ram Classic in penalty kick shootout.

The Raiders defeated Valley View rival 2-1, winning the shootout 5-4.

In regulation, Luis Flores tallied the goal in regulation on an assist from Jarrid Gordon.

Brandon Murillo made eight saves for the win.

The Raiders then defeated Kennedy 1-0 on a 5-4 shootout advantage in the quarterfinals of the Ram Classic.

“Brandon Murillo had two huge saves in the shootout to help the team advance,” said Bolingbrook coach Jamie Clemmons. “Brandon made saves in consecutive games in shootout to help the Raiders advance.”

Spartans fall in Gibson’s debut Hinsdale South scored on all of its first-half possessions, running away from host Romeoville in the debut of new head coach Oliver Gibson. The Hornets would win the game 43-14. The Spartans netted a pair of scores, one in each half.

“All summer we talked about shutting him down and for the most part, we did that, but it is the little things that make the score what it is,” Borland said. “We knew they had some playmakers on offense.

We have some stuff to clean up.

It wasn’t perfect by any means and

we have some improving to do, but they are a great football team. This is a good judge of where we are at, we have work to do and we will do it before week two.”

Coach Ivlow knows the Raiders faced a solid team and he looks for improvement next week as Bolingbrook hosts Valley View rival Romeoville.

“We played a good team and we came up here and we gave it our best shot and we are going to get better,” he said. “(Glenbard West) is a good team. Are we happy with us offensively? No, we aren’t happy, but we will get better. The greatest improvement always comes from week one to week two and we will get better.”

The water runs all the way down and behind the green, making it a difficult approach and possible fourth shot to the left of the green.

The back nine plays even shorter than the front and begins with an uphill par-4. Next is a slight downhill par-3 with water on the left and is followed by a short par4 with water in front of the green.

A driver could be a dangerous club here.

The 13th hole is a 508-yard par5, which normally plays shorter and is reachable in two. After clearing the water with your drive, a fairway drive can allow you to

go for the green if you are a longer hitter. It is a tough driving hole though with trees on both sides and there are bunkers to the front right of the green for those who are going for the green in two.

The 14th is a long (198) par-3 over water to a large green. A 414yard par-4 follows with bunkers on the right of another large green.

The 16th is a 517-yard par-5 with bunkers to the right of the green and a fairway bunker that comes into play off the tee. If you can carry it, you can reach in two.

A strong finishing stretch begins at No. 17, a 148-yard par-3 that has a big drop off the tee and plays over water to a triangle green.

The final hole is a par-4, which has a fairway that rolls downhill, allowing short approach shots if

played to the left. There is water behind an elevated green.

When I reviewed the course, it was the third time I have played it. And, I have enjoyed it more and more each time. It does offer its challenges, but is a fair course and allows you the potential to score well if you can keep the ball in play.

The course is in good shape and it is in a quiet place in the middle of nowhere with just a few nice houses around it.

The rates are very reasonable at $50 during the week and just $35 after 2 p.m. Weekend rates are $65 and just $40 after 2 p.m.

If you are looking to play a scenic course that is challenging but allows for scoring potential, this is your course.
