Moving girls to lead

Rebecca’s House Foundation strengthens young people By laura katauskas staff reporter

Image is key and believing in oneself is easier said than done.

It is not easy for girls coming of age in today’s media-saturated world, according to Rebecca’s House Foundation leader Cheryl Jordan, who is out to change that one step at a time.

After working with area youth service organizations for years, Jordan was moved to build her own program to help serve the community. She formed the volunteer-run, nonprofit organization in 2007 as a way to mentoring youth.

“I was working in the community [and] was a substitute teacher and a parent myself, and felt that void,”

The mission of Rebecca’s House is to strengthen the character and foundation of young people through education and social development, while working with various community institutions, organizations and other

resources.

Over the years, the group has seen hundreds of children participate in its programs, which first began with characterbuilding programs centered on children’s social abilities, kindness and outreach that would also complement their academic life.

The Bolingbrook Police Department is warning residents that recent phone solicitations are not coming from the department.

The department wanted to clarify that the police department is not requesting donations for any reason. Some residents have

reported misleading telephone solicitations occurring in the village.

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police is the union that represents police officers. MAP is calling Bolingbrook residents for donations to fund various union activities.

Village to kick off anniversary celebration Numerous activities planned for weekend By laura katauskas staff reporter

Marking the 50th anniversary of the village of Bolingbrook, committee members have planned a host of activities this weekend to kick off the milestone celebration.

Nestled in the heart of historic Bolingbrook, the Bolingbrook Historic Museum, 444 E. Briarcliff Road, will be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Saturday followed by tours.

Committee member Peggy Drey said the old farmhouse was hastily adopted in 1966 to be the first police station and later housed village offices. A handmade jail was made of wire in the basement.

Brought back by popular demand, the International

Cornfield Sailing Championship and Regatta will take place at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Bolingbrook Town Center, 375 Briarcliff Road. Drey said the USS Swat Bus, Sea Pig and Iron Cupcake are front runners in the regatta revival for the anniversary.

After the event, the annual village picnic will run from noon to 6 p.m. on town center grounds.

A disc jockey will be on site all day, along with various activities, including a Slingshot Squad launching 5-Oh! shirts into the crowd, pony rides, petting zoo, climbing wall, trackless train, photo booth, magician, face painting, free hot dogs and food booths.

A birthday bash with surprise appearances and cake is also scheduled to take place at 3 p.m.

In a 12-hour event celebrating Filipino culture, the second-year festival drew crowds of almost 7,500 to Bolingbrook’s Town Center June 20.

Piyesta Pinoy 2015, a Philippine Fest, was presented by the Philippine American Cultural Foundation and the village of Bolingbrook. Popular guest artists Sam Milby and Geneva Cruz performed in the evening hours of the festival, which was held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and attracted an audience from throughout the area.

The festival was originally held at Navy Pier, but the site only allowed for about 1,000 people. Hoping to extend the event to the suburbs, organizers said Bolingbrook officials offered the space, which was the perfect venue.

“Bolingbrook has such diversity and has helped us showcase what we can offer out to the suburbs,” said Michelle Laura White of the Young Philippine American Leaders. “We love it out here.”

Though only in its second year in Bolingbrook, attendance has almost doubled.

Bolingbrook resident Romy Balcita said she hopes the festival will always stay in the village.

“This is one of the biggest Filipino festivals in the Chicagoland area, and everyone enjoys it so much,” Balcita said. “We’re going to keep doing it forever, as long as the mayor will keep letting us do it, we will.”

Piyesta Pinoy aims to provide a special forum for artists, vendors and performers to share their crafts, works and talents in promoting Filipino American arts, music, cuisine and cultural heritage.

“It’s meant to bring the older generation out to enjoy their heritage and at the same time educate the younger generation about their culture as well as share that with the entire community,” White said.

by Chicago Angklung Rondalla Ensemble, the PACF Performing Arts, BIBBAK Illinois PSA UIUC Barkada and Divine Rhythm and the Filipino Cultural Dance Troupe of Iowa and the Couples for Christ Carinosa dancers.

In addition, new performers featured were singers Kayla Tejero, David Wycoco and the Pax Minstrels; dance group The Future Kingz; the CFC House Band; and returning bands SamaSama Project and Above and Beyond Band.

Most participants tend to be of middle and high school age, a time when most girls are going through a transition period, according to Jordan.

“It’s hard navigating through this time when so many things are changing, we try to teach them how to do so with a sense of self-confidence,” Jordan said.

The cost is $135 per girl, and that includes materials and two field trips to Chicago. Girls interested in joining the program can do so at any time.

Jordan explained that the program would not work without all of its volunteers, who work together to support the social and emotional health of girls through service, mentoring and building effective networks.

David Jacobson David Jacobson, age 92, of Bolingbrook passed away May 29. He was born in Chicago on March 27, 1923, and lived in Bolingbrook for more than 40 years. Jacobson was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.

He was the beloved husband of the late LuVerne; loving father of Suzanne Rosenorn and Lori (Bob) Domzalski; and dear grandfather of Todd Rosenorn, Jason and Autumn Domzalski.

Visitation was June 10 from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at noon. Interment

was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to BolingbrookMcCauley Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.

NO FRILL HOMES Residents reminisce about Bolingbrook’s first homes Submitted by the bolingbrook Anniversary committee The most attractive feature of the first tract houses in what would become Bolingbrook was their $395 down payment.

What was it like back then to move into a brand new house in a new place that had never existed before? Original residents of the village painted a pioneer picture, more reminiscent of the 1860s than what you’d expect from the 1960s.

For just more than $10,000, you could move your family into a Westbury house. Let’s just say that Dover Construction soon became a declared enemy of the new residents of Bolingbrook.

“I thought I was moving into my dream house,” Pat Westfall, a young mother at the time, said.

“When we walked in, though, we saw bare concrete floors.

There was some cheap tile in the kitchen and bath, but nothing but concrete floors for the rest of the downstairs.”

“I thought I was moving into my dream house.

When we walked in, though, we saw bare concrete floors. There was some cheap tile in the kitchen and bath, but nothing but concrete floors for the rest of the downstairs.”

She said the upstairs rooms weren’t much better, which had bare plywood on the floors.

“The first thing we had to do was spend a whole thousand dollars to buy carpets,” Westfall recalled. “If you bought the paint from Dover it was just white

wash, with grit in it. You could pick from several colors – but it was one color for every room in the house.

“Smart people decided to do their own painting,” Westfall added.

“We were the 35th home to be

‘almost finished’ in Westbury,” she said. “Since there were no building inspectors, our electricity was connected to the neighbors’, then out to a pole, not directly to the home.

“Our yard was dirt and it was up to you to grade and seed your lawn. The streets in the new subdivision were gravel and

mud. Streetlights and sidewalks were afterthoughts,” said Smith.

Walt Magdziarz said a full year passed from the time he moved in to Colonial Village in 1962 to the time Dover put gravel down for the streets.

“It was one more year before the streets were paved,” he added.

Superbowl champion and all-pro tight end Rob Gronkowski spent the father’s day weekend at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet with his dad and four brothers.

The family flew into Illinois from five different “As a dad, its really special.” said Gordon Gronkowski. “We never get together that much. To have all five of them together is phenomenal for me.”

The family was scheduled to serve as grand marshals for the race and Rob had been tabbed to drive the pace car to kick off the Owens Corning AttiCat 300 Saturday night, but when the rain postponed the race until Sunday, the Gronkowski family were not able to stay around.

But just because they didn’t call for racers to start their engines or pace the field to the green flag, does not mean the energetic clan didn’t entertain.

The brothers, especially youngest brother Glenn, an all-Big 12 fullback at Kansas State, had the media center in stitches during their press conference as well as having a blast with fans during a question and answer session in the Infield Fan Zone.

While there, Rob admitted when he practiced in the pace car earlier in the day, he may have gone over the pace speed, saying he had the pace car in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Even that lap, he said, made him

appreciate NASCAR drivers.

“I wasn’t going 185 like them, but it is a challenge. It takes practice, hard work and dedication. They have to have mental toughness and they are up there with athletes in their competitiveness.”

The brothers answered every question from fans, sometimes with a PG-13 response, but the crowd loved the playful candor .

The question and answer segment ended with the family inviting several fans up for a dance party, while Rob signed autographs for lucky fans.

One of those fans, Katie Kessen, flew in from North Carolina just to see Rob. “I flew in last week to see Rob and I got to dance with him,” she said.

“I am a huge Patriots fan and I have family in Illinois and they always come to the race, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I came and got an autograph. It made my whole day.”

The day was also a win-win for another Patriots fan.

“I am a NASCAR fan and I love the Patriots,” said Dane Libby from Oneida, Illinois “We have had season tickets for five years and it all just worked out.”

While the Gronkowski family is known for having a good time, their time in Chicagoland was not all fun and games.

The family also spread charity across Chicagoland with their charity , The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation. The family met with

“I had equipment, fields, whatever it was. We decided to start a charity to give back to kids that aren’t in the position that my brothers and I were in as we were growing up.

“The Gronk Nation inspires kids to get out on the playgrounds and football fields. We donate equipment to youth football so that kids can get out there and be active.”

XFINITY RACE Rains came in full Saturday night, washing out the Saturday night’s Owens Corning AttiCat 300 race at Chicagoland Speedway.

The move to Sunday may have hindered some, but it played to the favor of two drivers, as well as the fans that came back to watch.

Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney battled

the final dozen laps, with Jones taking the checkered flag, finishing a weekend sweep, as he won the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway Friday.

Jones, the youngest NASCAR driver to win two races in the same weekend, has run in all three series this season.

The win was his second NASCAR XFINITY Series race of the season, and eighth top 10 series finish.

“I got the inside of (Blaney) and just barreled into (turn) three as hard as I could to clear and slid in front,” said Jones. “Fortunately it worked and he didn’t try to cross us over or anything else.”

Jones started 11th in his No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“It seemed like last year I’d be into these situations and be so nervous,” the 19-year-old said. “This time its like ‘I’ve got this.’ I felt like I’ve done it so many times throughout the year and throughout the day that it felt more natural. That’s definitely a product of seat time and being in the car every week or the truck every week. It’s been a huge, huge help.”

Jones led 94 of the race’s 200 laps while Blaney topped the field for 43 laps.

Blaney wrecked his No. 22 Hertz Ford Saturday in qualifying and was in a backup car Sunday, starting in the back row.

“I thought it was a good day for us, a decent day,” Blaney said. “I felt like I

Benet’s Schuessler heads All-Area Volleyball team

Last year, Benet’s Mark Schuessler failed to make the ESCC All-Conference squad as a junior.

That helped motivated him in the offseason to take things to the next level.

That, he did.

Schuessler, a 6-foot, 7-inch outside hitter for the Redwings, finished the season with 457 kills, 131 digs, 29 blocks and 43 aces.

He was also the ESCC Player of the Year and led the Redwings to a regional championship and nearly a sectional win, totaling nearly 60 kills in the two matches.

For his accomplishments, Schuessler is the Voyager Media Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

“It was one of the best seasons I have ever had,” Schuessler said.

“In club this year I had one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I feel like I improved a lot from last year where I wasn’t even all-conference.

I feel like my confidence was never down. I always played liked my next swing was for the game.”

“Mark is an outstanding allaround player who dominates from every position on the court,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren.

“His athleticism and versatility make him difficult to defend. His impressive kills from the both front and back row, combined with his killer jump serve, make him a force to be reckoned with.”

While Schuessler was strong throughout the year, it was his playoff run against some of the state’s top competition, which put him over the top.

He was the go-to hitter for Benet in a pair of three-set matches in the playoffs.

“Every time I see that we’re in a tight spot, I tell them to set me,” Schuessler said. “I know I am going to be able to pull it out.”

Juwann Jackson A two-year captain for Joliet West, the outside hitter posted 342 kills, 172 digs, 15 blocks and 41 aces. “He carried us to a regional title with 18 and 19 kills on back to back nights,” said West coach Jason Herrmann.

Scott Kleiser The 6-2 senior co-captain played middle hitter exclusively this season after playing both outside and middle in 2014. He netted 228 kills (second on the team) to go along with 42, digs, 34 aces and a team-high 81 blocks. An all-ESCC performer and three-year starter, Kleiser made all-tournament teams at the Marist, Argo and Benet invites.

“He always put the team first,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren.

“He brought experience and consistency to our team this year and is an outstanding athlete with great jumping ability. He put the ball away with a lot of force.”

“He is our general on the court, a player that always has a competitive edge,” said Herrmann.

Conor O’Neill O’Neill, a junior outside hitter for Notre Dame, is, in coach Patrick Cole’s words, “A dynamic all-around player.” During the 2015 season, O’Neill registered 217 kills with a 40 percent kill percentage, 43 aces and 178 digs.

Noah Randall The Plainfield Central senior setter had 835 assists, 97 blocks and 48 aces for the Wildcats.

“Noah Randall is one of the best setters in the state, and has shown that by leading the Plainfield Central Wildcats to one of their best seasons,” Central coach Alex

Hurburt said. “Noah is looking forward to continuing his career playing in the competitive MIVA conference at Quincy University next season.”

Reed won at Daytona in the season-opener in the NASCAR. He is the second full-time NASCAR driver to win this season in an ARCA race, following Sprint Cup driver Trevor Bayne, who won at Pocono Raceway.

I recommend three to six months of expenses, and on a household income of $55,000, holding $20,000 in reserve would be a lot. If you kept $15,000 in the bank, that would leave you with $15,000. If you’re talking about a $30,000 upgrade, you’d only need to save up another $15,000.

With a little patience and planning, you can have your upgrade in the not-too-distant future and still have the peace of mind that goes with knowing you have a reasonable emergency fund sitting in the bank!

Area legislators schedule town hall meeting Meeting to occur from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Fountaindale Public Library State sens. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and reps. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, will hold a town hall meeting to discuss legislative issues from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.

“I appreciate the open discussions with community members about

topics that are important to them,” Bertino-Tarrant said in a release.

With the regular legislative session over, the town hall will give legislators an opportunity to answer questions from community members on legislation, the budget and any other concerns they may have.

“Communication between voters and officeholders is essential. I look

forward to this exchange of news, views and ideas,” McGuire said.

The town hall meeting is open to the public. Anyone with questions or concerns can join the legislators for a candid conversation about state and local government issues.

“The best ideas for reforming Springfield come from the common sense wisdom of Illinois taxpayers,” McAsey said. “As our state grapples with a severe fiscal crisis, it is especially important that lawmakers listen to the ideas of residents so that we accurately

represent their beliefs and help Illinois move forward.”

Boy Scout honored for saving drowning victim A Bolingbrook High School freshman was honored by the Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts of America for his heroic effort to save a drowning victim in a hotel pool in June 2014.

First Class Scout Caleb Erickson received the Scouting Medal of Merit at the council’s annual Distinguished Citizen Award dinner at Lewis University. The Merit Medal honors scouts who have performed an act of meritorious service above and beyond what is normally expected of a youth or adult member of the Boy Scouts of America.

must demonstrate some aspect of scouting ideals or skills.”

Caleb was on a family vacation and was in the shallow end of a hotel pool when his grandmother

noticed a boy struggling in the deep end. Caleb sprang into action, swam to the victim and, using the skills he learned in scouting, not only broke free of a death grip the boy had on his arm but also maneuvered himself to bring the victim to the pool edge using a dual underarm carry.

Once out of the pool, the former Humphrey Middle School honor student and band member calmed the victim, encouraging him to keep coughing to clear water from his airway. Fortunately, after a few minutes the boy recovered.

“Scouting isn’t just badges and camping,” award presenter Ilish Radulovic said. “It is so much more.”
