katauskas@buglenewspapers.com @lkatauskas A 22-year-old Bolingbrook man was arrested and charged with DUI in a fatal crash that killed one and injured another May 17.

Luis Jimenez, 508 Racine Lane, allegedly left his friend’s house in Wheaton to go for a joy ride at about 2 a.m. when he was speeding and lost control of his car at Sheffield Street and crashed into a tree. The front passenger died on the scene as a result of the impact and the rear seat passenger was severely injured.

Jimenez and the surviving passenger were transported to a local hospital and treated for their injuries.

Jimenez was released from the hospital, taken into custody and charged with one count of aggravated DUI involving death, a Class 2 felony punishable by up to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. An initial investigation into >> see DUI | page 2

Grant goes to Jane Addams for edible garden project Middle school wins Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation Toolbox for Education grant for $5,000

Jane Addams has received a Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation Toolbox for Education® grant for $5,000 that will be used to update the Bolingbrook middle school’s edible garden.

“We’re ecstatic,” said Addams School Nurse Denise Sarpy, who applied for the grant. “It’s like finding a needle in a haystack because so many schools apply for these grants. We’re very fortunate.”

The grant will be used to not only improve the garden’s esthetics but also to make the garden accessible for wheel chair bound students, staff and community.

“The garden should be accessible to kids who are wheelchair dependent,” Sarpy said. “Right now the surface is all grass and it gets muddy and it

is difficult to push a wheelchair through it.”

Located on the school’s southwest side, the garden was among the first edible gardens in Valley View School District 365U. It produces tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce, spinach, and different types of fruit which are eaten by Addams students at lunchtime.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim in this case who are now grieving their loss. I would like to thank the Wheaton Police Department for their quick response to this crash. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Flather for his efforts on this case.”

Celebrate summer reading at the library 2014 Summer Reading program, “Fizz, Boom, Read,” is running now through July 19

The summer slip. With school out, for some, reading can take a back seat to splashing in the pool and lounging in the sun.

But it has long been known that opening a book can expand the mind and the Fountaindale Public Library is celebrating summer.

The 2014 Summer Reading program, “Fizz, Boom, Read,” is running now through July 19.

You can register for the program at the library, on the Bookmobile, or online at www.fountaindale. org with your Fountaindale Public Library card through July 13.

Prize pickup begins Wednesday, May 28.

Children through 11 years old (not entering 6th grade) can read or listen to 10 books (or read for 10 hours), log books or hours online, and earn a paperback book.

Ten more and they will complete the program. They will receive a certificate of accomplishment and an entry into an online drawing for a gift card.

Participants can then read or listen to 20 more books to earn a chance in another online drawing for a household membership to the Museum of Science and Industry or a Pizza Party/MOPS Show from the Bookmobile.

If they log another 20 they will have an additional chance in the drawing.

From 3 to 4 p.m. the library will present Up, Up and Away, an interactive special event introducing children to the principles of air and pressure.

Hot air balloons, vortex generators and even a hovercraft will help children understand the benefits of air.

In addition, at 7 p.m., the Emerald City Theatre Company is presenting “Llama, Llama” for the summer play sponsored by the Friends of Fountaindale Public Library.

Spend a whole day with Llama Llama and Mama Llama as they encounter the daily challenges of Llama life.

Help them get through school stress, grocery store problems, and bedtime big business.

The play is being presented at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center located at 375 W. Briarcliff Rd.

The Bolingbrook lions club and the local chapter of the american cancer society kicked off the Memorial day weekend with its annual carnival held on village grounds Thursday through Monday.

The club sponsors various events throughout the year in support of the community, including the upcoming 11th annual Midwest regional beeper baseball tournament June 14 and 15. in cooperation with the Bolingbrook park district and village of Bolingbrook, eight Beep Baseball Teams consisting of blind and visually impaired athletes from around the country to participate in baseball bash.

Two men caught in home invasion Both offenders were processed and found to have lengthy criminal histories

Two Chicago men were caught in a foot chase May 24 after invading a home and threatening everyone with a gun in the 400 block of Sioux while two adults and two

children were inside.

Officers were called to the home and upon arrival found the intruders to still be inside. Lt. Mike Rompa said one offender jumped out of the second floor window with several officers in pursuit. After a lengthy foot chase, he actively fought his arrest, causing minor injuries to two officers.

The other offender was apprehended inside the home.

The loaded gun was found located next to the window which the offender jumped from. Cash which was stolen

from one of the victims was recovered from offenders.

Jerry Griffin, 33, and Keauncie Lee, 27, both of Chicago, were arrested and charged with home invasion, armed robbery, resisting arrest, aggravated UUW, possession of a firearm by a felon, four counts of aggravated battery, no FOID card, unlawful possession of firearm and ammo, and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Both offenders were processed and found to have lengthy criminal histories.

So, how could you have a golf outing fundraiser on one of the nastiest days of an already nasty weather year and still call it a success?

Here’s one idea: End it with a pig roast rotisseried by Ted Brodeur, Joliet Park District’s Director of Revenue Facilities, and his crew.

Drawn by the enchanting aroma of a piggy sutured with smokies inside and roasting over Kingsfords, I headed over to the pit where Brodeur was working his magic with Porky as our Exchange Club Golf Outing for the Kids was to begin. It was also nice and warm there, too. If it got much colder and rainier, I was gonna pop a few sutures and crawl in with the smokies.

For a while, I was thinking hard about taking the rain check the Park District offered to the golfers who showed up.

Watch some Cubs. Have a few beers and wait for the pork dinner to be served.

Farmers Weekly auteur John Kiefner was golfing with me, and he wasn’t really wild about going out in the mud with

athletic shoes instead of duck boots or waders. Then Octavio Cardenas showed up. He was in our group, too, and the owner of Supermercado Casa Blanca on Collins Street in Joliet was willing to give it a shot.

It didn’t take long to see why. He could play. Octavio put on a rain suit and turned super himself. John had some good shots. I had maybe two.

So Octavio carried us through nine holes. Actually more for John and Octavio. I headed in

Unfortunately, Octavio split before he could share some pork with us. But I told him later my son and I would be stopping by his place for some homemade carnitas.

I was surprised how well John did. He said he hadn’t golfed since the Young Farmers event last year. Must be all that baling and other farm work that gave him all that strength.

Really, the only thing that surprised me more is that

he didn’t drown. He never stopped talking. The same guy who told Octavio and me that his doctor told him to abstain from alcohol, exertion and talking after nearly losing his larynx yelling at one of his dogs was slogging through muddy fairways after having a few beers and chattering like a magpie.

You can always tell a farmer, but you can’t tell him much.

Note to self: earplugs for Young Farmers outing this year. And Xanax.

The other thing you need for a successful golf outing when the weather doesn’t cooperate is wonderful people to support you. We had a good number of golfers signed up and an amazing amount of hole sponsors. Thank you also to those of you who bought raffle tickets for a new golf bag and set of Callaway irons.

They joined our main sponsors – Northern Illinois Steel, D’Arcy Buick GMC, Bill Jacobs, Trinity Services and Joliet Firefighters – to help us raise more than $12,000 the Exchange Club will disperse to local charities who share our mission of protecting kids and preventing child abuse.

Raider relay runs to medal By scott tAyLor sports eDItor

CHARLESTON – The Bolingbrook 400-meter relay squad wasn’t expecting to medal at state after sitting in lane eight in the prelims Friday at the state meet at Eastern Illinois University.

However, the Raiders’ relay, comprised of Jessica Watkins, Asha Wallace, Claire Young and Charlyncia Stennis, won their heat and went on to take sixth place in the state with a time of 48.35 seconds, good for AllState honors.

“It wasn’t the best we could do, but we gave it our all today,” Young said.“It is what it is.Today there was more competition.”

“We’ve only been together for a short time, so for us to get a place like this is great,” Wallace said. “It was a happy moment.”

“We just got the relay together a couple weeks ago, so I’m really proud of my team,” Watkins said.“Our handoffs and everything were pretty good.”

Watkins also placed sixth in the 100, clocking in with a time of 12.25.

“It was alright,” Watkins said.

“I wish I would have PR’d.

I’m happy with my day, I just have to put in more work next

season. I think I was more mentally prepared this year from last year.”

Stennis also brought home an individual medal, placing seventh in the 400 with a time of 57.66.

“I’m really happy with how my events went today,” Stennis said. “The 4x1 did really good.

The team hasn’t been together that long and we came out here and put in work. In my individual 400, I did really good, being only a sophomore. Today was a great day, I PR’d. It is nice to go up on the podium.”

Watkins also competed in the 200, but failed to qualify for finals after clocking in with a time of 25.07.

“It’s good (that I medaled twice), but at the same time it kind of hurts because I really like the 200,” Watkins said. “I will just have to work hard for next year.”

roMeoviLLe Cierra Pulliam jumped her way into Romeoville history Saturday at the state meet at Eastern Illinois University.

Pulliam finished in third place in the triple jump with a jump of 38-feet, 2.5-inches.

Soccer season ends in regional

While the Bolingbrook girls soccer team failed to reach the regional finals again this season, the 2-0 loss to Naperville North in no way is a reflection of the program and yet another step it took this season to being able to compete with the top teams in the area and in the state.

The Raiders had a fight that coach Martin Uscila and the team was proud of, not only in the season-ending loss, but all year.

“I am proud,” Uscila said. “We ended up 15-6-3, the most wins ever by a girls team. We were second in conference and I thought we played our hearts out.”

The Raider seniors echoed their coach.

“The team as a whole went out and tried our best and there wasn’t that one player they could key on,” said senior Dayle Tietjens. ”The team as a whole went out there and tried our best. We set the bar this year for sure. It is different after this.”

“I had such a good time this season,” Melissa Verdin said. This game was challenging, but we all tried our hardest.”

Uscila felt the game could have been officiated different, however, he conceded that the Huskies were the better team.

“I thought maybe the ref was off in the beginning and there were a few times I thought we

should have been awarded a PK or at least a foul and I feel like that could have changed the game,” he said.“I am not blaming this on the ref, ultimately, I feel they outplayed us, but those were turning points in the game.

“I thought we were competing hard and then we got wore down and when we got wore down, we weren’t moving off the ball, they had more technical players at that point and they were fresher and we have a 2-0 result.”

Uscila added that he hopes as the program grows, the Raiders get more respect.

“We just have to get a better seed. We are the No. 9 seed and we are playing the No. 5. We should have played the No. 8 and we already played them and bet them. I am hoping that someday we can get a No. 7 seed. We are now a program that won 15 games,” he said. “Hopefully next year when teams look at us we may get the No. 7 seed, even if we are an 8 or 9. II think this year we were a No. 7 seed and we got a 9. Maybe Naperville North will look at us and know we gave them a game and Naperville Central from last year and maybe we can get a seed that we can get a win without having to pull off a miracle.”

Collins leads ‘Brook to state

Bolingbrook’s Peyton Chapman could have had surgery to fix a knee injury that plagued him all year, but he instead decided to hold off and compete this season.

That gamble paid off as he took second in the 400 with a time of 51.09.

“I battled through a ton of injuries this season, so to battle through it all and pull off a second here and go to state is a big deal for me,” Chapman said. “I would

have had the surgery if I didn’t think this was possible, so to do this with banged up knees is amazing.”

The end of the race was so close that Chapman, his family and coaches were not sure if he placed second and earned the automatic bid or was third and did not qualify.

“I thought I had it, coach thought I didn’t have it. My dad thought I had it, but a few other guys thought I didn’t have it, so it was killing me waiting for results,” Chapman said. “When I didn’t >> see STATE | page 15

Pulliam qualified for finals after an opening jump of 3701.75, good for first in her flight.

“It feels pretty good,” Pulliam said Friday. “I just PR’d. I am pretty excited. It was a great first jump. I think it was my adrenaline. I was pumped up and ready to go. I just wanted to get the best of it. I was pretty consistent and felt really good.

It’s really exciting.”

Even though it was her first time at state in the event, Pulliam didn’t let the nerves

get the best of her.

“I don’t get really nervous because I’m ready to go and to what I need to do,” Pulliam said.

“I can’t be nervous or I will get too nervous and not do good.”

After struggling through a quad injury at the Downers South Sectional the previous Friday, Pulliam was healthy at state.

“It was wrapped earlier today, but it fell off,” Pulliam said of her quad. “It doesn’t hurt at all.

It is a real good feeling (to be healthy at state) and not need to get it wrapped anymore.”

Chapman was not the only Valley View runner to overcome injuries to advance to state this year, as sophomore last season, Romeoville’s D’Lante Dawson decided to run track for the Spartans for the first time.

That would not happen, however, as a broken hip kept Dawson on the sideline and a year away from his debut.

This season, after recovering, Dawson took to the track for the first time as a varsity athlete and Friday night the comeback was made worthwhile as he qualified for state in the 200-meter dash, advancing to this weekend’s finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Those two, Nikia Smith (19 goals) and Rachel Schneider (18) tallied the majority of the Raider goals this season.

“This season has been one of a kind. We went out there every game and proved that we belonged out there with Naperville,” said Schneider, who will play next season for Illinois Wesleyan.“We beat H-F this year, we beat Sandburg and that was the first for the program and this will just keep going from this year.”

She is, however, confident passing the torch.

“I love these girls and I believe in them whole heartedly and they believe that they can get it

“This was the goal training. This was the goal during indoor season and when the outdoor season got here, I just kept telling myself in my mind I was going to do this.”

With the 200 coming at the end of the night and the temperatures falling, Dawson was not sure he would be in the best running condition, but he posted a 22.52 in the race, placing second at the Romeoville Sectional.

“I was cold and tight and I came out here and ran my hardest,” he said. “I just wanted to get down there to Eastern and show well.”

Chapman will be joined by other Raiders, as Bolingbrook will send even athletes in five events.

One of the two-event qualifiers, Joshua Collins was the sectional’s fastest man,winning the 100-meter dash in 10.82.

He also anchored the 4x100 relay with John Hall, Tyler Elmore and Damare Portis. The quartet won the sectional title in 42.85.

“This is my first year going

The Northwestern-bound Smith, who was named to the all-state team this season, moved from defense to forward this year to help the team.

“This will be a tough senior night,”he said.“We accomplished everything except that we wanted to be in a regional final and be competing for it.

Hamburg is one of Germany’s wealthiest cities and a major financial, commercial, and media center. As is the case with port cities all over Europe, Germany’s leading port saw its docklands abandoned as freighters needed to be accommodated in a more modern setting outside of town. The rundown (yet central) real estate of the old harbor has been given new life with a massive renewal project - HafenCity. Its shining glory is the new Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which looks like a glass palace resting on top of an old warehouse. However, like Berlin’s airport, the concert hall has hit major snags - it’s about 270 million euros ($369 million USD) over budget and won’t be opening until 2017 - about seven years late.

In Nuernberg, the Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg) has reopened after a restoration. Visits to the castle’s “Deep Well” (which, at 165 feet, is, well, deep) are now accompanied by a guide. Wittenberg’s Town Church of St. Mary’s - which was Martin Luther’s home church for many years - is being renovated. From early 2014 to early 2015, the nave of the church will be closed, and no organ concerts will be held. Planning ahead, Germany’s many Luther sights (especially in the Luther cities of Wittenberg, Erfurt and Eisenacht) are gearing up for a very festive 2017 (on a Lutheran scale anyway) the 500th anniversary of Luther kicking off the Protestant Reformation in 1517.

In Frankfurt, the new European Central Bank building, with its glistening twin towers topping out at 607 feet, is scheduled to open in 2014. The “New Frankfurt Old Town” construction project, stretching from the cathedral to the city hall, is also underway. It will include up to 35 new buildings, several of which will be reproductions of historic structures destroyed during WWII air raids.
