With more than 4,000 service hours at Adventist bolingbrook hospital, Cudebec was bound to make someone smile. in fact, his selflessness is one of the reason’s Abh recently awarded Cudebec with its Service excellence Award.

“Sid goes above and beyond to make things rights and has made a huge impact in our volunteer program here and he is considered part of the hospital team,” said danielle muhlenbeck, program manager for service excellence and volunteer services. but Cudebec shrugs off the compliments, and explains he just wants to do something positive with his time and give back to bolingbrook and the community he has lived in since 1974. “i love dealing with people, and if i can help in some small way, why not,” he said. he has been volunteering at the hospital since it opened in 2008 and before then at the tall Grass Corporate Center.

McGee student a ‘community hero’ for action during fire Fire department recognized 11-year-old Claire Mueller for reporting home fire Officials from the Bolingbrook Fire Department honored Jamie McGee Elementary School fifth grader Claire Mueller last week for taking quick action that may have saved her home from major fire damage.

Director of Public Safety Tom Ross said the 11-year-old called

911 the evening of Jan. 13 to report a fire in her home.

“Claire knew her address and was able to speak clearly, answering all of the dispatcher’s questions,” Ross said during a presentation in her classroom at McGee, pointing out that Mueller followed directions and got out

of the house immediately and, while waiting for the fire engines to arrives, calmly assisted the 911 dispatcher in explaining the dryer in the laundry room was on fire.

She also explained that her father, who is deaf, and her pet dog had exited the house safely.

“Although understandably still very scared, Claire continued to help while she was outside the house by describing the smoke and flames to the 911 dispatcher,” Ross added. “That valuable information was passed on to the responding firefighters.”

Ross called Mueller a “community hero.”

New Song Church invites community to Bone Marrow Drive Attendees ages 18 to 44 will have the opportunity to join ‘Be the Match Registry’ The New Song Church in Bolingbrook is hosting a Bone Marrow Donor Registry Drive May 2-3 at the church, 151 E. Briarcliff Road. Attendees ages 18 to 44 will have the opportunity to join the “Be the Match Registry.” The organization said joining the fight will give thousands of patients who are depending on finding a suitable marrow donor for a bone marrow transplant a second chance at life.

There are no needles to join, just a consent form and cheek swab.

On Saturday, May 2, the drive will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in

the back parking lot of New Song Church. On Sunday, May 3, the drive will take place at noon at the church after the worship service.

New Song Church in Bolingbrook houses a food pantry, the Bolingbrook Christian Health Center, Midwest Christian Montessori Academy, housing counseling for the Community Service Council of Will County, and the Good Shepherd Head Start program.

Secretary of state to bring mobile site to Bolingbrook May 4 Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Levy Senior Center Bolingbrook, will be bringing a mobile site to the area for residents to take care of services closer to home. Drivers can renew their driver’s license, obtain a duplicate or corrected license or an Illinois identification card. White’s mobile unit will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 4, at the Levy Senior Center, 251 Canterbury Lane.

BHS junior named self-advocate of the year at regional event Program designed to reward students who demonstrate strong self-advocacy skills Bolingbrook High School junior Samantha Simon received the 2014-15 Advocate of the Year award at the 13th annual Deaf/Hard of Hearing Self-Advocate of the Year event.

Simon, a member of the Raiders Marching Band Color Guard, Symphonic Band, Women’s Glee and Best Buddies at BHS, received the award April 14 with more than two dozen Valley View School District middle and high

school students among those in attendance.

The event included team building activities; exhibits from the Chicago Hearing Society, Equip for Equality, Illinois School for the Deaf and others; and an inspirational presentation by guest speaker Sheri Cook.

The program, sponsored by various Chicago-area school districts, is designed to reward students who demonstrate strong

self-advocacy skills and to motivate others to develop similar skills.

The goals include: providing students and parents with an opportunity to meet other students who are strong self-advocates; providing students and parents with an opportunity to interact with successful adults who are deaf or hard of hearing; offering an opportunity for students to socialize with other students who are hard of hearing or deaf; exposing students to a program that motivates them to think about self-advocacy and the role that it can play in their current and future lives.

The ABH volunteer program has been in effect since the hospital opened in 2008. There are currently 174 active volunteers giving their time to the hospital. “You can hear the kindness in his voice. He does everything with all his heart and its shows,” said Muhlenbeck.

He has volunteered in many areas of the hospital, including Hospitality Desk as an Escort, Health PASS, Marketing, Foundation, Infection Control, Mail Room, Emergency Department Front Desk, Medical Surgical Units and New Employee/ Volunteer Orientation. He is also the CREATION Health Coach for the volunteer department and

promotes wellness initiatives on the volunteer team. In addition, he has volunteered countless hours at community outreach activities on behalf of the hospital.

“I just think it’s important to greet everyone with a hello and how may I help you. Maybe I grab them a wheelchair or escort them down the hall—it’s hard enough to be in the hospital, I am just glad to help out a little,” said Cudebec.

Muhlenbeck said the hospital considers its volunteers to be an important part of the patient experience at the hospital and wanted to recognize an individual that radiates Service Excellence.

In his spare time, Cudebec

climbs mountains… literally!

In 2013, he and his son climbed Mt. Rainer and made it to the summit. In 2014, he placed first in his age group at the Hancock Hustle downtown Chicago, climbing 94 floors to the top of the John Hancock Building in 20 minutes and 14 seconds.

Aside from climbing mountains, he considers himself blessed in many ways with a wonderful wife, Laura of 41 years, two children and three grandchildren, early retirement and good health.

He has developed many close relationships with team members over the years and considers ABH his “home away from home.”

Transportation for Illinois Coalition Capital Bill among issues paramount to chamber executives

On Wednesday April 15, I joined several other Executive Directors of West Suburban Chamber of Commerce’s as we traveled to Springfield for the Annual Employer Action Day. We had a full day worth of speeches, meetings and lobbying and were able to meet with Gov. Rauner, Senate President John Cullerton as well as Senate Minority leader Christine Radogno and House GOP leader Jim Durkin.

Among the issues that were paramount to Chamber Execs was the proposed Transportation for Illinois Coalition or TFIC Capital Bill. The Illinois Chamber along with many other local Chambers are working towards a state capital bill.

Together, we have identified that Illinois transportation needs annual investment of at least $1.8 billion a year.

To address this need, TFIC has

come up with a proposal that funds the infrastructure work. The proposal would provide $1.39 billion in ongoing maintenance funding each year for improvements over a five year time frame.

The proposal includes the following revenue sources: increase in the motor fuel tax; increase the general sales tax rate by 0.1 percent and capture for transportation; and other fee increases.

As of now Rauner and legislative leaders have indicated that they want to do a capital bill.

However, no language has been introduced that contains any of the components of the TFIC proposal.

Another high priority of chambers as well as businesses across the state is Workers Compensation legislation.

Currently the discussion is about primary cause.

This legislation establishes a primary cause standard for determining whether the workplace contributed/ caused the injury. It defines the scope of “traveling employee” to “employment

related travel” or whether the injury occurs while actively engaged in the duties of employment.

In layman’s terms, this means it switches the burden of proof as to whether the employee got hurt on the jobsite or while outside of work.

Currently, in most cases the employer has to prove that the employee did not get hurt in the workplace, whereas the proposal brings the burden of proof more on the employee.

The Illinois Chamber and Chambers across the state support this legislation.

All Worker’s Compensation bills are being held in committees pending negotiations.

At the conference, Rauner spoke about the need for a constitutional amendment in regards to pension reform which he hopes to put on the ballot for the November 2016 election.

This is just in the infancy stage and I will give you more information as I find out more.

In the meantime, I am representing you and would welcome any input that you have.

Same Plan ‘Brook soccer to keep building program under new coach

After spending years getting the Bolingbrook girls soccer team to be a viable program, coach Martin Uscilla stepped aside after last year to spend more time with his family.

He left the program with talented players and the reigns were handed over to Matt Kocourek, a longtime assistant on the guys side under Jamie Clemmons, who also assists on the girls team.

“It is nice having Jamie here because I have worked with him for nine years and we just flip roles,” Kocourek said. “We know each other well and he has helped me take over and knowing some of the girls and their habits. A lot of them are here during the summer and they cheer on the boys, so it is like a family.

Kocourek said it is beneficial having a senior led team to bride the transition.

“It is nice to have them to streamline the take over and a lot of them know me,” he said. “It is

good. We have a great group of girls, we have nine seniors, so we are senior loaded. We have 22 girls on the team and everyone is playing strong and showing up to practice and making strides.

“The program was left in good standing. They had one of their most successful years last year. I have worked with Martin in the past and we share some philosophies and that makes it a smoother transition.”

Kocourek may not be familiar with all the opposing players, but he sure knows the team names from the guys side and knows there are no easy games.

“This is a strong soccer conference and we are in a strong soccer area with the Napervilles and we see them in the playoffs,” he said.

Unfortunately, one of the seniors that Kocourek was looking to count on is lost for the season.

“We lost our top striker, Caroline Harvey, to a torn ACL. It is unfortunate,” he said. “She had seven goals already when she

Lewis softball blanks Missouri S&T twice in series sweep The Lewis University softball team used a potent hitting attack and dominant pitching to earn the 7-0, 4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep

over Missouri S&T at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday (April 26) afternoon.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 23-20 overall and 13-13 in GLVC

action, while the visiting Miners fall to 9-28 on the campaign and 6-22 in conference play.

In the opener, Lewis sophomore Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./

Lemont) topped the Flyers offensively, as she went 4-for-4 with a RBI, including her teambest seventh home run of the season. The Flyers also received

two hits and a RBI from sophomore third baseman Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and senior second baseman Frankie Rys (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist). Rys also scored twice while junior catcher Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) went 2-for-2 and scored a run.

Freshman center fielder Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) drove in two runs for the Flyers.

Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was dominant in the circle, as she earned the complete-game, three-hit shutout. Bowler (14-12) struck out six batters while her counterpart Becca Strope (5-7) took the loss for the Miners. Strope allowed six runs - four earned - and 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work, while fanning two.

The Flyers used the long ball to their advantage in the nightcap, as both junior second baseman Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) and Nojiri both went deep. Castagna connected for a three-run blast in the first inning, while Nojiri had a solo blast in the third. Jaworski also went 2-for-3 and scored a run in the game two win.

Lewis sophomore pitcher Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./ St. Bede Academy) picked up the complete-game, three-hit victory for the Flyers. Schweickert (9-8) struck out eight batters in the win.

Missouri S&T starting pitcher Kati Viets (4-16) took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits in six innings pitched with four strikeouts.

BASEBALL Freshman Ryan Fox (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) extended his scoreless streak to 17.0 innings as he helped Lewis split a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s on Sunday (April 26) afternoon.

The Flyers took game one 1-0 in nine innings of a game originally scheduled for seven innings. Lewis fell in game two 4-1.

New SWSC rules to help Raiders grow program

For the last few years, the Bolingbrook boys tennis team has been working on building its program up to be competitive in both the strong SouthWest Suburban Conference as well as the tough area, however, it has been difficult for the Raiders to fill its roster with players with varsity experience.

This season is a different story.

Not only does Bolingbrook have enough players to fill out its lineup, a switch in conference strategy is helping the Raiders build.

“We are at full squads this year at both varsity and junior varsity and that is big,” said Bolingbrook coach Chris Mallon. “This is the first year in our conference that we have a junior varsity instead of the freshman/sophomore team and

While the Raiders wait for the new juniors to progress, they got off to a good start this season, taking a 3-1-1 record into league play.

Mallon said, now they just have to maintain consistency as the tough part of the schedule approaches.

“We have to continue to run our drills in practice and continue to keep them motivated while we hit that long stretch of games all in a row and now we will have Saturdays, so we have to keep our health in stride for the day to day grind in the middle of the season,” he said.

Bolingbrook also has a new adventure in store for them at the end of the season, as it will have new competition to open the state series.

“We are in a different sectional this year, we are in the Plainfield Sectional this year,” Mallon said. “We have been in the Joliet Sectional with the Joliet schools and Lemont.”

Bolingbrook is in the Plainfield North Sectional with all four Plainfield schools, both Oswego schools, Yorkville and Neuqua Valley.

The Raiders have already defeated Plainfield South 5-2 and beat Plainfield East 4-3 this season.

“This year we will see some fresh faces and you never know,” Mallon said.

she is really holding it down in back and Tyler Holmes is a junior defenseman doing a nice job.

Cecelia Bach is a senior helping us at right mid.”

To go with the seniors, Bolingbrook has a couple freshmen helping the cause.

“We have two freshmen, Rachel Perez, who is a key contributer and our startering goal keeper Julia Lentz,” Kocourek said.

Having a freshman keeper may mean some young mistakes now, but he knows it means an anchor for three more years.

“We are trying to get her time out there now, see what she can do and get her the experience,” Kocourek said. “She has a good feel for the game and plays like a veteran in most situations, it is just a matter of getting her more time and more experience.”

Windows 10 gets back to basics, and more Microsoft looks to make good for Windows 8 debacle

Microsoft had redeemed itself. If you are not interested in Windows 10, I’ll give you the short take: Windows 10 will be worth the effort. Microsoft has restored the desktop and menus. The Start Menu is back in place with a twist: It shows the all the menus.

I then lambasted Microsoft along menus for traditional software but with, well, pretty much everyone also shows an expanded box with who tried to use Windows 8 on a the newer “Apps” menus. This gives desktop or laptop computer. The you the option to do either if you are free update to Windows 8.1 fixed on a traditional old-school desktop many sins, but by then it was too or laptop computer with a mouse and keyboard, which is kind of like late.

In the interest of doing some having your cake and eating it too.

If you have a mobile device, or a research, I decided to get a preview copy of Windows 10 and see if touch-screen enabled computer,

you will get a different look. The touch-based start screen will appear instead of the desktop.

This little bit of magic is based in code that detects the type of computer you are using and adjusts the initial screen to match. Nice touch. Ha ha, get it? Under the Start Menu, you will see a muchimproved organization of options.

For example, in prior versions the Control Panel, Printers, and Devices were somewhat separated. To me, these are all related and should be under one menu. Windows 7 and 8 sort of fixed it, but still had the old “Control Panel” concept.

Windows 10 fixes this. Everything related to making changes to the computer is grouped under a single “Settings” menu. The submenus under that are logically grouped as well: “Printers”, “Devices”, “Personalizations” etc. Finally, there is one place to go to make changes.

Animal control experts urge caution, as canine flu moves into area By laura katauskas staff reporter

No one wants to be hit by the flu, and that includes our furry friends.

While reports of canine influenza have been rampant in Chicago, the Will County area is seeing signs of the potentially devastating virus hitting closer to the suburbs.

The Animal Clinic of Romeoville has seen at least three to four suspected cases each week and has been inundated with phone calls in regards to what canine flu really means.

Veterinarian Mikel Pulins urges pet owners to spot the signs of a potential flu—coughing, sneezing, loss of appetite, warm to the

touch—and to bring their dog in for a checkup.

There have been more than 1,100 confirmed dog flu cases reported from greater Chicagoland and at least six fatalities have been reported. At least 300 additional cases have been confirmed from Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Will County Animal Control administrator Lee Schild D.V.M. said precautions are necessary to help area dog owners protect their pets.

“This is a significant outbreak caused by a virus of Asian lineage,” Schild said. “Dog flu is common in the U.S., but this is a strain we haven’t seen before. Until the outbreak shows signs of subsiding, it would be prudent to avoid dog

parks and keep dogs separated as much as possible.”

Schild said dogs are much less likely to acquire a virus if they avoid contact with other dogs, adding that dog owners may also consider postponing grooming their pet.

Pulin agrees. The vet said the best defense is to keep dogs away from other animals at this time, avoiding dog parks or boarding the animal.

He said puppies and older dogs who are unable to fight off a virus are most susceptible.

Pulin said he has seen cases with

dogs having very high fevers of 104 degrees and a deep kennel cough but not showing signs of vomiting and diarrhea. He advises a treatment of fluids and antibiotics given at the clinic.

Experts believe the Chicagoland outbreak is caused by a virus closely related to Asian strains of the H3N2 virus currently widespread in southern China and South Korea.

Cases began surfacing in Chicago during January and have been increasing rapidly since the Easter holiday, according to Will County Animal Control.

At least four suspect dog flu cases have been reported in the county, but additional testing ruled out the H3N2 virus strain. At least two of the four suspected local cases were linked to dog care facilities.

There is a vaccine available for the H3N8 dog flu virus, which has been circulating throughout portions of North America since 2004. However, there is no vaccine formulated specifically to combat the new H3N2 strain. Experts are unsure if the H3N8 vaccine will offer any protection against the H3N2 virus.
