Today’s students can opt for the regular pizza and chicken nuggets but can give hummus and a tangerine chicken rice bowl a try too.

Just this past month, to emphasize the nutritional value of fish, Valley View school District 365u helped High Liner Foods kick off its TGIFF (Thanks Goodness it’s Fish Friday) promotion Feb. 23 by hosting Chef Marco suarez (who has appeared on the tV show “Chopped”) in the Bolingbrook high school cafeteria. see the FuLL story on page 5

Girl Scouts honor various cultures from around the globe

Nearly 300 girl scouts from Service Unit 736 of Bolingbrook and Romeoville took a tour around the world without leaving the village.

Each year on or around February 22, Girl Scouts nationwide participate in activities and projects with global themes. World Thinking Day gives the scouts a chance to honor their sister Girl Scouts/ Guides by celebrating international friendships and remembering that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of nearly 150 countries that are members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) WAGGS.

Peterson pleads not guilty to murder for hire charges Charged with soliciting murder of Will County State’s Attorney Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy R. Walker and Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced Tuesday that defendant Drew Peterson waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty in the state’s case charging him with one count of solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder.

Peterson, 61, an inmate at the Menard Correctional Center, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered the plea before Randolph County Circuit Judge Richard A. Brown.

The charges, both Class X felonies, allege that between September 2013 and December 2014, the defendant solicited an individual to carry out a murderfor-hire plot against Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

The case is being jointly prosecuted by the Randolph County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

Also today, the state filed a required notice disclosing the case involved the use of a court-

ordered eavesdropping device on two occasions – from Oct. 24 to Nov. 23, 2014, and from Nov. 23 to Dec. 22, 2014.

The state also filed a motion for a discovery protective order pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 415(d) precluding the defendant, defense counsel or defense personnel, as well as the prosecution, from publicly disclosing any information provided in discovery for the duration of this case to protect the identity and safety of Individual A. Judge Brown granted the state’s motion following an in-camera hearing. The case was set for a case management conference at 10 a.m. on April 14.

There’s a new act in town for Rialto There’s a new group on Facebook devoted to the Rialto Square Theater: “Working with the Rialto – For the Rialto.”

Sherry Carnes-Lewandowski, a real estate agent who lives in Shorewood, is a driving force behind the page, and she wants to make sure that everyone knows that the new group is not at all connected to another Facebook group,thesometimes-controversial “The Rialto Belongs to the People,” started by Dave Neal and controlled

by Mary Beth Gannon.

The people who post on the new page are trying to support the theater by spreading the word about shows, and they are also kicking around ideas for fundraising.

“We are working hard to do right by the Rialto on the page,” CarnesLewandowski said.

Around half of the Will County Board joined several other county officials at the Will County Farm Bureau’s annual government gettogether Feb. 26 at Al’s Steak House in Joliet.

The host for the evening, Farm Bureau Governmental Affairs Chair Jerry Davidson, asked County Executive Larry Walsh to introduce the various dignitaries in

the audience.

As Walsh had some difficulty getting the microphone to work, County Board Democratic Caucus Chair Herb Brooks tried to help.

“You don’t need a mic, Larry,” said Brooks, a pastor known for his booming voice.

“I know that,” Walsh replied.

“The only one louder than me is you.”

Chef introduces new cuisine to Bolingbrook High School students Valley View plans more diverse menu

The days of referring to school cafeteria food as the dreaded mystery meat are behind us.

Today’s students can opt for the regular pizza and chicken nuggets but can try hummus and a tangerine chicken rice bowl also.

In an effort to emphasize the nutritional value of fish, Valley View School District 365U helped High Liner Foods kick off its Thanks Goodness it’s Fish Friday promotion Feb. 23 by hosting Chef Marco Suarez, who has appeared on the TV show “Chopped,” at Bolingbrook High School.

Throughout the lunch hour, Suarez and several BHS culinary students handed out samples of his sweet potato crusted pollock over a waffle, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup to BHS students. The chef’s team also encouraged students to sign an e-pledge promising to make an effort to eat more fish.

“It’s important to re-engineer the youth of America into not being afraid of fish,” Suarez said. “A lot of

them don’t eat fish, which is crazy because fish comes in an array of colors, flavors, and textures.”

Following the lunchtime serving event, the master chef met with BHS culinary students to demonstrate the wonders of salmon, including the many ways it can be cooked as well as its overall health value.

He said fish sticks are full of minced meat and ruined America on eating fish, adding he likes to change youths’ minds toward fish.

“If I can convince maybe a dozen kids today to eat fish who maybe have never eaten it before that’s a win,” he said.

VVSD Nutrition Services Director Meghan Gibbons, whose department sponsored the visit, agreed.

“Do I think all of a sudden fish will be our number one seller, ‘No,’ but it catches their interest and when you bring a chef to anything it’s cool,” said Gibbons. “We can pique their interest and even having them just try it, is what counts, whether it’s fish or maybe some other new items...”

She said the real goal is to catch the high school students’ attention.

She also said that Bolingbrook High School was a great fit for this event since the school offered a wide array of culinary classes and gave a chance for its culinary students to experience something new.

“It was a pretty good experience,”

said BHS junior culinary student Quinn Wilder, who plans on becoming a food expert in the military and hopes to open his own restaurant someday. “It gives me more opportunities to expand my culinary skills.”

And, many BHS students liked the unique dish. Those who did kept coming back for more.

“Not a big fan of coleslaw but I did taste the fish—it was awesome.

I’ve had three. I would definitely eat it again. Cool idea,” said Mark Gaskinis, senior.

BHS freshman Alex Quitana said the dish was good.

“It tastes kind of like normal fish with waffles,” he added.

Suarez also writes recipes following guidelines for the nutrition staff of schools in hopes to provide new ideas for districts to incorporate how to cook fresh fish and promote the health benefits.

“The fact is they are so impressionable it is important to start at this age,” said Suarez. “If I make it hip, they can’t get enough of it... It’s too hard to convince a 25-year-old to eat fish.”

But before anything goes on the district’s menu, the schools holds a taste test that requires an 80 percent acceptability rate.

“We do that at all of our sites,” said Gibbons. “We will likely go to RHS then and see if they like it. We do promos like this and then we do

student taste tests throughout all our buildings. So our kids dictate what the menu becomes.”

Currently, the district serves fish every Friday in the middle and high school and every three weeks

in elementary schools. Taste tests drive menus which are reviewed annually, and seasonal menus are used to gauge new foods.

The centerpiece, though, is the pancake breakfast held this year March 21 and 22, from 8 a.m. noon.

Suspended physician guilty of bilking Medicare, dispensing oxycodone Judge hands down 18-month sentence A Bolingbrook resident whose medical license was suspended was sentenced to 18 months in prison for health care fraud and illegally prescribing controlled substance medications. Sathish Narayanappa Babu, 48, who owned Anik Life Sciences Medical Corp., pled guilty in September 2014 to illegally prescribing oxycodone and other controlled substances, fraudulently billing Medicare approximately $500,000, and fraudulently collecting approximately $216,000, for services he did not provide.

Babu operated Anik Life Sciences, a home-visiting physician’s office, in Darien and, previously, in Arlington Heights.

U.S. District Court Judge John J. Tharp also imposed a term of three years of supervised release and a restitution amount of $221,012. Babu agreed to forfeit the approximately $126,000, which

was seized at the time of his arrest and will be credited toward the restitution ordered. Also forfeited were three automobiles ― a 2013 BMW, a 2001 BMW, and a 2010 Lexus. Babu was ordered to begin serving his sentence on May 13, 2015.

“This crime wasn’t an isolated act, it was a calculated, systematic effort to milk Medicare,” said Tharp while imposing sentence, “The defendant was stealing money from those in need….putting many in need at risk.”

Babu admitted that he engaged in a scheme to defraud Medicare from approximately November 2011 through February 2014. In addition, Babu admitted that between November2012andDecember2013, he issued multiple prescriptions for controlled substances to a patient, who was actually an undercover agent, despite never having seen

or examined the patient. Babu also permitted unlicensed personnel associated with Anik Life Sciences to issue prescriptions to the patient.

During the same period, Babu submitted false claims to Medicare for services provided to the patient that were not rendered by Babu or another licensed medical professional. According to court documents, the undercover agent posedasahealthyindividualcovered

by Medicare and seeking physician services to obtain prescription medication, including oxycodone.

The agent claimed to have shoulder pain from a previous injury and to be on disability. On approximately 10 occasions, representatives from Anik Life Sciences, none of whom were licensed as physicians, nurses, or other medical professionals, visited the undercover agent in his purported apartment.

Fifth-nine-year coaching icon Gordie Gillespie, died Feb. 28 at his Joliet residence at the age of 88.

Gillespie, who spent 25 years with the University of St. Francis, was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas in July, 2009.

Gillespie posts an overall baseball record of 1,893-952-2.

With St. Francis, Gillespie was 1,020-581-2 in his years on the bench. He spent 10 years at Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he was 239-130. His

college coaching career began at Lewis University, where he was 634-241 in 24 years.

“This has been a great life,” Gillespie told the Bugle in a 2009 story. “I know I am very fortunate and I thank God that He has allowed me to do this. As far as the College Baseball Hall of Fame, it is a tremendous honor.

You feel very humbled by it. I feel the same as when I started.

I don’t have an ego problem.”

Gillespie was not only a baseball coach, nor has he stayed at the college level.

He had a 222-54-6 record in 27 years as coach of Joliet Catholic High School, where he won

Gillespie also coached USF football for eight years, netting a 48-33-0 record.

He coached Lewis’ mens basketball team for 15 years, putting up a 228-124 record.

He also coached women’s basketball at USF for one year, posting an 11-7 mark.

Overall, Gillespie has a coached a total of 3,453 games, with a 2,402-1,170-8 record, a win percentage of .672.

“I had a thrill at Lewis when we won three championships in a row in ‘74, ‘75 and ‘76,” he said. “At St. Francis, we won a championship in 1993. Those are a little extra special because of the extra competition going all the way. It is like winning the World Series anywhere else.”

While in college, Gillespie learned from a pretty good coach, playing for Ray Meyer at DePaul.

As a player, Gillespie posted a record of 2,292-1,122 at DePaul and Kelvyn Park High School in four different sports.

Coming out of college, it was not unusual for him to coach multiple teams.

“It was expected. My first contract at Joliet Catholic, I taught five classes, was assistant football coach, assistant baseball coach and coached the basketball team,” he said.

“At one time, I was head coach in three sports, plus Athletic Director, plus teaching my classes. To coach, you had to teach two classes, so I taught my classes at the high school, then was off to Lewis where I coached basketball and baseball and was Athletic Director.”

That was from 1959-1965, when he coached football at Catholic High and baseball and basketball at Lewis, while serving as AD. His stint as Lewis basketball coach ended

in 1965, however, from 19661976, he coached both football at Catholic High and baseball at Lewis. He left Lewis in 1977 and began coaching baseball at St. Francis, where he coached college baseball and high school football until he retired from the Hilltoppers in 1985.

Gillespie was always more concerned about molding the athlete, not getting the win.

“The W’s and L’s don’t matter really. It is seeing the kids develop. Not only as a player, but in their lives. Having the kids I coached send a picture at Christmas time with their four kids, that is the beauty of it. A lot of fellas are retiring from high school positions, because that can do that at $100,000 a year.

And that is great, I am happy for them. “You hope the kids

will remember what you have tried to teach them.,” he said. ”The fundamentals are fine, but it is knowing right and wrong.

Playing honestly, playing with integrity, playing fairly — that is what it is all about. If you can’t take that away from the game, what can you take away.”

Although he has had several players through the years make it to professional baseball, Gillespie said that was not his primary goal.

“There have been so many great kids and see them succeed.

I don’t know how many kids we had make it in professional baseball, but I was proud of them,” he said. “I am awfully proud, too of the amount of doctors and lawyers and school teachers. That is what this job is all about.”

When most opponents scouted the Benet girls basketball team, they saw the frantic pace the Redwings play and figured the best way to defeat them was to slow the game down.

Not Bolingbrook.

The Raiders also play at a fast pace and when they play it well, can play it with the best teams.

Unfortunately for Bolingbrook, it did not play its best out of the gate and fell 8566 to Benet in the Oswego East Sectional semifinal.

Flyers advance to quarters

Lewis University senior forward Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) notched a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, along with his 1,000th career-point, as the host Flyers went wire-to-wire for the 70-52 GLVC Men’s Basketball First Round victory over Illinois Springfield at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (March 1) afternoon.

Lewis was 6-for-8 from the field and added a block for good measure. His 18 points were a season-high, while his 13 caroms were a team-season high.

“It was no different than the game when we beat HF when we played an up and down game and it was going to be a matter of who could limit the turnovers.”

Bolingbrook, unfortunately, did not limit the turnovers.

Those early turnovers helped Benet get out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter.

“We had 16 turnovers in the first half and a lot of them were early and that 10 points they were up at the end of the first half was a big difference in the game,” Smith said.

(Lyons, Ill./Morton), freshman guard Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior forward Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Jarosz had a solid all-around game with 17 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, while Strus notched 13 points and added seven boards. Nelson was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

“We did what we had to do against what I think is the most improved team in the league, the way that (UIS) has been playing lately,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “I thought we handled their

small line-ups very well, took care of the ball and Jeff (Jarosz) and Julian (Lewis) were phenomenal.

“It was a good effort against a much improved team.”

With the win, Lewis improves to 21-7 on the season, while UIS ends its season with a mark of 11-16. This marks the ninth-straight season that the Flyers have advanced to the GLVC Quarterfinals. No other team in the conference can lay claim to that achievement.

As a team, Lewis shot 53.3% (24for-45) from the field, while the Flyers held UIS to a 34.5% (20-for-58) shooting performance.

With the exception of a small stretch in the third quarter, the Raiders (15-12) battled Benet better the last three periods.

“In the next three quarters, if you break it down, it was a much more competitive game,” Smith said. “It is just hard to make up that 10 point difference when you have a team as good as Benet.”

Bennita Drain led Bolingbrook with 16 points, Brittney Patrick added 13 and Karli Seay had 12.

Benet (30-3) was paced by Emily Schramek, who tallied 16 of her team-high 22 points in the second half, Kathleen Doyle had 20 points, while Emily Eshoo and Elise Stout both scored 16.

For the Raiders, however, the season was a successful one – as they claimed a regional title and saw the team progress nicely from the first game of the

season to the last.

“We played much better at the end of season and truth be told, I don’t know how many teams wanted to play us,” Smith said. “( The regional title) was good to get that and grow from that and now it is time to get back to where Bolingbrook was and the tradition it has had over the last 15 years.”

Not only did the Raiders grow during the season, but took a big step in the advancement of the program, now in the second year under Smith.

“We have 35 wins over the first two seasons and we are seeing where the program is going,” Smith said. “Just getting the new style and the new culture in takes time. That is a great thing about the administration at Bolingbrook – they understood it was going to be a change and it was a new era.”

Answering questions about Continuing Education adults go back to school for a variety of reasons. they may have personal accomplishment goals or their motivation could be purely financial. unemployment has recently led many individuals back to the classroom.

Many colleges and universities report that re-entry or adult students are the new majority on campus. adults ages 25 to 69 are increasingly enrolling in courses around the country.

Going back to school is a serious undertaking. Not only is it an investment of time, but it is also an investment of money. For those thinking about going back to school, consider these questions.

1. Is NoW thE rIGht tIME? Those going back to school because they think it might provide better job prospects or yield higher salaries could be mistaken.

Many employers are cutting continuing-education grants and scaling back on hires with advanced degrees.

That’s because companies are feeling the heat of the recession as well. Advanced degrees generally mean having to pay an employee a higher salary, something many companies are not in a position to do right now. Therefore, an advanced degree might prove a hindrance in today’s job market and not become the financial windfall

4. What Is thE rIGht sChooL?

There is a growing interest in schools that specifically specialize in online degrees.

Such schools enable students to take classes on their own time and complete assignments in a manner that’s less timespecific.

Continuing students who may not have a spouse or children can move around to the school of choice.

Once again, finances figure to play a major role when deciding on a school.

5. Is a CoLLEGE DEGrEE rEaLLy NECEssary?

For many, continuing education doesn’t mean heading to a college campus.

It can involve taking certificate programs and vocational training.

Today’s seniors, particularly those who already have passed retirement age, may find themselves with many free hours to fill now that a job no longer accounts for most of their time. returning to school may help seniors realize lifelong dreams of finishing a degree, exploring a hobby, getting educated to gain work in a new field, or just to fill some time in a productive way. Information from the united states Department of Education’s National Center for Education statistics finds the demand for continuing education is still growing.

In the event the property is a condominium, in accordance with 735 ILCS 5/15-1507(c)(1) (H-1) and (H-2), 765 ILCS 605/9(g)(5), and 765 ILCS 605/18.5(g-1), you are hereby notified that the purchaser of the unit, other than a mortgagee, shall pay the assessments and legal fees required by subdivisions (g)(1) and (g)(4) of Section 9 and the assessments required by subsection (g-1) of Section 18.5 of the Illinois Condominium Property Act. Pursuant to Local Court Rule 11.03 (J) if there is a surplus following application of the proceeds of sale, then the plaintiff shall send written notice pursuant to 735 ILCS 5/15-1512(d) to all parties to the proceeding advising them of the amount of the surplus and that the surplus will be held until a party obtains a court order for its distribution or, in the absence of an order, until the surplus is forfeited to the State.
