Helping Hands collects almost $2,100 to help local families More than a dozen families at Humphrey Middle School were able to enjoy brighter holidays and additional support in months to come thanks to the annual Humphrey Helping Hands program.

With seventh grade social studies teacher Claudine Sharko continuing to head up the campaign, Humphrey students, staff and local businesses contributed $2,081 during the three-week fundraising effort. The money was used to purchase winter coats, toys, books, gift cards to local grocery stores and other items for families.

Elves who assisted this year were Judy Elmore, Sandi Saracco, Bridget James, Heather Eck, Mary Kuliavas, Kathy Fritz, Kelly Williams, Kathy Walsh, Rebecca Mayer, Harold Fair, Nicole Olson and Jeanne Rodenkirch.

That’s what motivational speaker Tim Hannig told Oak View

Elementary School students during two Pro Kids Show assemblies.

“When you have a caring heart, that’s a great thing,” Hannig said.

“Every single person in the world likes to be appreciated. When you learn how to appreciate someone, that will help you in your friendships, in your family and at school.”

Hannig helped students understand how to build what he calls a digital “character play list.”

That list includes I Cooperate, I Respect, I Request, I Appreciate, and I Am Responsible.

“What really matters is not what’s on the outside but what you have on the inside. Our character is on the inside. It comes out through the words we say and the choices we make,” Hannig said. “When we get too wrapped up in ourselves, we forget about helping others.”

Bolingbrook welcomes first baby of 2016 A Bolingbrook medical center welcomed the first baby of 2016 on New Year’s Day. A boy, NyHeir Irie Stroud, was born to Ebony Carter and Steve Stroud of Bolingbrook at 4:16 a.m.

Jan. 1 at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center. NyHeir weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Carter’s original due date was

Dec. 31 but was pushed to Jan. 10.

The couple had come to the hospital three times for false alarms. Her physician, Dr. Yong Kim, planned to induce Carter Jan. 4, but little NyHeir couldn’t wait any longer.

The parents, who got engaged on Christmas Day, were surprised with a beautiful gift bag full of baby items donated by the hospital. A gift certificate was also donated by

This can sometimes hold parents back as well, explains Payton. But she said taxes based on 2014 can be used and updated after the application has been submitted, thus holding your place in line.

cover story Senate Bill 986 now requires child-care employees to show proof of having received the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine.

What to know about new, amended laws in 2016 any Illinoisans learned last week that 90 percent of pumpkins grown in the country are produced right here in the Land of Lincoln.

To recognize that feat, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation making pumpkin pie the official pie of Illinois. When they weren’t busy playing tug of war with the state budget or considering “official” dessert candidates, legislators found time to pass many new or amended pieces of legislation that will affect workers, the terminally ill and students, to name a few.

Of the 237 new laws that went into effect Jan. 1, several stand out because of the impact they will have on Illinois residents.

To help readers digest this full slate of new rules, we’ve narrowed down the list to six areas that will see the most change in 2016.

House Bill 3930 (PA 99-0077) changes definition of “sexual orientation” in the hate crime statute, the institutional vandalism statute, and the statute concerning aggravating factors in sentencing to the definition used in the Illinois Human Rights Act. The law amends the offense of institutional vandalism by replacing the term “sexual orientation” with “ancestry, gender, sexual orientation” and “physical or mental disability.”

House Bill 217 (PA 99-0411)

prohibits mental health providers from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with a person younger than the age of 18. The legislation also prohibits advertising that represents homosexuality as a mental disease, disorder or illness.

Violation of the law is an unlawful practice under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. It also codifies that a provider who engages in sexual orientation efforts may be subject to discipline by the licensing entity or disciplinary review board with competent jurisdiction.

Law enforcement Senate Bill 1304 (PA 99-0352) Creates new rules and regulations for the use of officer-worn body cameras and implements a number of police reforms, such as prohibiting the use of chokeholds when deadly force isn’t justified, requiring an independent review of officer-involved deaths, making investigation reports part of the public record when an officer involved in a death is not charged with a crime, expanding officer training to include topics such as use of force, and creating a database of officers who have been fired or resigned due to misconduct.

While the bill does not require police departments to use body

cameras, it states that officers in departments that choose to use body cameras must keep their cameras on when conducting law enforcement activities. Officers would be allowed to turn the camera off when talking to a confidential informant, as well as at the request of a victim or witness.

The bill allows for grants via a $5 fee increase for each $40 on criminal and traffic offenses, to go toward cameras and new training.

Senate Bill 1129 (PA 99-0371) targets designer drug manufacturers by allowing prosecutors to not have to wait as long for lab tests to show if a synthetic drug is illegal. Additionally, two new laws (PA 99-0050 and PA 990051) prohibit the sale of powdered caffeine to individuals younger than 18 and the sale of products consisting of or containing powdered alcohol.

Beginning Jan. 1, Illinois became one of several “Right to Try” states. House Bill 1335 (PA 99-0270) gives terminally-ill patients access to medical treatments that have not yet been approved for use by the general public. These include clinical-trial, experimental medical treatments and medications.

Senate Bill 986 (PA 99-0267) requires child-care employees at any childcare facility that cares for children ages 6 and younger to provide proof of two doses of the measles mumps and rubella vaccine or provide proof of immunity. The legislation also requires child-care employees to show proof of having received the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine.

High school students should have a better understanding of government and the democratic process, as House Bill 4025 (PA 99-0434) sets a civics course requirement to high school curriculum. The law requires at least one semester of the required two years of social studies be set aside for civics instruction, including a focus on government institutions, discussion of current and controversial issues, service learning, and simulations of

the democratic process. Senate Bill 1455 (PA 99-0185) requires that one of the assessments administered by the Illinois State Board of Education shall be accepted by Illinois public institutions of higher education for the purpose of student application or admissions consideration. House Bill 163 (PA 990084) prohibits the Illinois State Board of Education from establishing different performance standards based on race or ethnicity. Additionally, schools will now be required to be equipped with approved carbon monoxide alarms or detectors.

Bobcats aside, legislators also made several steps to protect animals in 2016.

House Bill 3231 (PA 99-0357) increases penalties for a person who is convicted of a specified cruel treatment of animals violation upon a companion animal in the presence of a child. The law states that In addition to any other penalty provided by law, the new legislation states that a person who is convicted shall be subject to a fine of $250 and ordered to perform community service for a minimum of 100 hours.

Legislators also made several changes to laws surrounding DUI arrests and convictions in the new year. Among these, House Bill 3533 (PA 99-0296) requires ignition interlock devices to be installed for a minimum of five years on all vehicles owned by a person who has been convicted of a second or subsequent DUI offense.

Senate Bill 627 (PA 99-0467) makes several DUI-related recommendations based on the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee.

Changes include requiring certain individuals suspected of consuming alcohol to sign the written warning from law enforcement; removing “hard time” provisions that currently prohibit driving relief for DUI offenders, and instead allow offenders to apply for a monitoring device driving permit or restricted driving permit with a breath alcohol ignition interlock device; requiring any offender with two or more DUI or reckless homicide convictions to install a BAIID as a condition of a restricted driving permit; and requiring a BAIID, as a condition of a RDP, if the offender is convicted of DUI involving death, great bodily harm, or permanent disability or disfigurement to another.

Additionally, House Bill 1446 (PA 99-0290) allows drivers who had their license permanently revoked after a fourth DUI conviction to obtain a restricted driving permit after five years if the person shows a minimum three years of uninterrupted sobriety and successful completion all of the recommended rehabilitation activity.

Penalties for trucking violations also increased Jan. 1. House Bill 1516 (PA 99-0291) states that any driver who willfully violates specified motor carrier safety regulations is guilty of a Class 3 felony when the violation results in a motor vehicle accident that causes great bodily harm, permanent disability or disfigurement, or death to another person. Those violations include DUI, motor carrier drivers’ hours of service, motor carrier qualifications for drivers, or other violations that would place the driver or vehicle out of service.

House Bill 246 (PA 99-0146) designates Dec. 23 of each year to be “Scott’s Law Day,” to honor public safety workers and remind motorists to utilize safety when passing stopped emergency vehicles.

Beginning with the 2017 registration year, House Bill 2811 (PA 99-0071) allows any vehicle owner or spouse who has been approved for the reduced registration fee pursuant to the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief Act to also pay the reduced fee for any vehicle displaying specialty plates.

A 32-year-old Bolingbrook man, and self-proclaimed gang member, was arrested Jan. 3 in Riverside after being caught weaving through traffic with cocaine powder on his face and a 40-ounce bottle of beer on the passenger seat. It was his fourth DUI arrest.

Joesph J. Caliendo, 32 of the 300 block of Lyons Drive in Bolingbrook, was charged Jan. 3 with felony aggravated DUI, felony aggravated revoked license, misdemeanor DUI, open alcohol, speeding and improper lane usage.

Caliendo had three prior convictions for DUI including February 2001, October 2008 and March 2009. Additionally, Caliendo had been stopped and ticketed nine previous times for driving while his license was revoked.

Caliendo also was on parole at the time of the arrest and has 29 prior arrests and convictions including dangerous drugs, assault, invasion of privacy, burglary, traffic offenses, robbery, obstruction of justice and theft.

This week we celebrate the beginning of a new year and that special voices brings New Year’s resolutions for many individuals. This year, I’d like to recommend some resolutions for how you can change the game for a more accepting and inclusive world.

This year, let us continue to focus on the abilities of those of us with special needs, as we educate our communities on how to bring pure joy and determination to everything that we do.

Take, for example, a relatively new challenge to help do just that.

This past year, Special Olympics launched a new challenge called “P.L.A.Y. #LetsChangeTheGame.” The challenge is simple.

Its mission is to encourage all people to play, learn, accept and say “yes” together. The goal is to have common ground among people of all abilities.

To give a specific example, this past week I and my fellow SEASPAR Special Olympics teammates had the opportunity to play what Special Olympics calls unified basketball.

The Level Up youth basketball team, based in Downers Grove, consisted of players without disabilities.

They partnered with my team in playing a fun unified scrimmage game. Together, the Level Up youth basketball players played with us and

learned about our differences. These players then were able to accept us and say “yes” to an inclusive game.

This year, let’s take time to focus on the pure joyous moments of all of our lives. One can snap a photo, write a blog post or column, or podcast anecdotes that showcase those moments that bring about pure joy.

One can also simply relate anecdotes of joyous moments, while engaging in old-fashioned conversation.

One such pure joyful episode occurred to me this past summer. The date was July 25, and I was standing on the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The opening ceremony of the Special Olympics 2015 World Summer Games was taking place.

I was standing among my fellow Special Olympics athletes. We were celebrating our abilities— whether we were there on that global stage as an athlete or a journalist. For those in attendance, we celebrated our acceptance and inclusion within the world.

Another pure joyful moment for me also occurred this past year in Normal, Illinois, at the 2015 Summer Games for Special Olympics Illinois.

This time I was with previous “Special Voices” athletes Erin Compton and Becky Cavanagh, both diagnosed with Down syndrome. It was at the opening ceremony that I first met Erin and Becky. The #UnifiedSelfie that the three of us captured that first night of the weekend showed the pure joy that those of us with special needs can bring to our communities.

Many of us with special needs demonstrate determination in

everything we do. We work so hard to achieve our goals despite any challenges that we face. One of my former special education teachers, Leann Philgren, personally witnessed the hard work ethic that my fellow classmates at Westmont High School and I had displayed.

In a past Special Chronicles podcast, Leann spoke about the determination, perseverance and ability to overcome obstacles that those of us with special needs bring to our world.

“He’s so powerful. He’s one of those students that work so hard to be successful,” said Leann. “What you guys bring to our population is a gift.”

Our parents, in addition to our teachers, are ones that firsthand recognize the determination that we show the world.

“The ability to smile and carry on no matter the circumstances is something that Erin teaches us all,” said Diane Compton, mother of Erin.

“Not expecting life to be perfect for it to be joyful.”

This year, let us recall the joyous moments and determination that those of us with special needs bring to our world. Join me in the new year, and let’s change the game in bringing about pure joy to our world.

Hampton Park is now Romeoville Hampton Park, at one time, was a subdivision within what is now the village of Romeoville. It did, and does, have many hard-working, blue-collar and white-collar workers. There is a true legacy left here by the founders.

As a Hampton Park resident for many years and member of the Romeoville Area Historical Society, it is with deep sadness and gratitude that I write about three of my Hampton Park friends that passed away within one week. Their loss to me, and the village of Romeoville, and the vital contribution they pioneered, will remain forever and never be forgotten.

Evelyn Aguilar, who had lived up the block from me, was a devoted “Golden Ager.” She had charge of the kitchen.

She made sure everything was ready for

everyone. I played some dice games with her and our friends. Her son, Jimmy, lived with her. He always made the coffee. We all cared (still do) about Jimmy. She was a founding member. We have her picture on our “Golden Ager” wall. She lived in Hampton Park.

Ermal Daily – my “hillbilly” friend, as she always called herself – was forever trying to please people with her “crockpot” candy and many different recipes. She would phone me anytime of the day or night about some recipe she found. I took her to the Bolingbrook picnic. We played bingo and had fun.

She was very strong and a true lady of substance. She lived in Hampton Park.

Rita Raisor was married to one of our first firefighters. At that time, many

firemen and policemen volunteered their service. We have pictures of Rita and her husband in our historical society books. She promoted old-fashion values.

She displayed a need to have roots and belong. She lived in Hampton Park.

These three women will go into our future Hampton Park books, as some of our many founders. They were inspirational with their contribution.

Romeoville is now in the process of writing about Hampton Park in our second book.

We are no longer Hampton Park, but a proud village and community with excellent leadership that is hard working and caring of all of the residents. Yes, it does take a village. The former Hampton Park is now the village of Romeoville.

When Bolingbrook and Joliet Central met up in the seventh place game of the Rich South Big Dipper Holiday Tournament, the two SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division teams played their entire benches, getting everyone floor time.

The Raiders earned the win, holding off the Steelmen 53-28.

“It was good to get our guys some game minutes,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost.

“We shared the ball really well and almost everyone scored and it was good for that. Our mantra on our team is to be a good teammate and if we do that, everything will be fine. That was exhibited today, by playing as a team and playing together.”

Bolingbrook opened the tournament with a 78-65 win over Butler College Prep, led by 20 points from Nana Akenten.

The Raiders then lost two games in a row by a total of 11 points, falling to Lincoln-Way Central 71-67 as Devon Sams scored 21, while they fell 60-55 to Leo. Darick Anderson poured in 21.

“We have two losses by one basket to a 9-1 team and a 10-2 team, so you are always frustrated when you lose those tight ones, but that being said, they were 9-1 and 10-2 and both were by one basket, so there is stuff to grow on from this tournament,” Brost said. “That is why we come here because we know we will see really good teams and we will be challenged and we were.

“They were frustrating losses, but that’s what happens when you play good teams.”

Brost knows the Raiders are not far off from being the team they want.

“We have been talking about playing with pace and that is something that we don’t always

Spartans go 1-3 at own tournament

Romeoville came into its own holiday tournament looking for a strong showing despite having a young team.

However, after a heartbreaking loss in the second round to Glenbard South, the Spartans lost their final two games, going 1-3 on the tournament for eighth place.

In the final game they fell to Plainfield Central 70-66, a team it had beaten twice earlier in the season.

“Once we got beat with those two desperation shots, it took a lot out of us,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “We played decent ball yesterday, but the 9 am game today was a little rough on us. We had some higher goals and expectations and then we played Plainfield Central again and they had the motivation. We have to

get back to basics and get ready for Oswego now.”

The Spartans led 36-31 at the half, but trailed 63-55 late in the fourth quarter before a late rally.

Senior Matt Cappelletti finished the game with 24 points en route to being named to the alltournament team.

“I thought Matt had an outstanding tournament,” Howard said. “He averaged 18 (points) and eight (rebounds). I’m happy to see how he is constantly improving.”

With a young team, Romeoville has to learn how to respond from a tough loss.

“You can’t let a tough loss get the best of you,” Howard said. “But you also have to guard somebody. We didn’t do that today. We just have to get back to basics and stress team defense and concepts.”

Lewis men open season with win The 2016 Lewis men’s volleyball season opened in a big way on Saturday (Jan. 2) with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) victory over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. It was the first ever visit to Romeoville for the Gauchos of UCSB. Lewis was led by redshirt freshman Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School).

He hit .471 with 21 kills, eight digs and six block assists in his first collegiate match.

Senior Patrick Lilly (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) had a career-high 11 kills with two aces.

The Flyers scored key points at key times in the first two sets. In the opening fame, it was 23-22 in favor of the Flyers when Lewis called a timeout. Out of the break,

“Our first-ball contact broke down a bit in game three,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “But I thought in game four we refocused and got better from that point and put the match away.”

Lewis out-blocked UCSB 13.5 to 7.0. Senior Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel), last season’s national blocks leader, had a match-high eight block assists.

“I thought our net play was great,” Friend said. “Our middles really anchored that.”

The Flyers also recorded a 3627 edge in digs, with redshirt freshman Jake Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) notching 10 digs.

Overall, the tournament was again a success from an operations standpoint as Joliet Catholic went on to win the tournament.

“Coaches are saying great things about the tournament and they want to see more in the future,” Howard said. “We’ve got big plans to constantly improve

this tournament. We will see what happens. We’re thinking about expanding to the lower levels.”

There was some turbulence on the second day of the tournament as an ice storm forced a postponement of the winners bracket, making the top eight teams finish on New Year’s Eve. “It is safety first,” Howard said. “The last thing you want is someone getting in an accident driving to play basketball. It was the right decision.”

Gyms and health club memberships can be expensive, so the Better Business Bureau advises consumers to treat a gym membership like any major purchase and do their research before signing on the dotted line.

Billing and collection issues, along with overall unhappiness with the membership contract, are top consumer concerns, as the number of complaints filed with the BBB against health clubs has remained steady.

“The number of complaints filed show that the negative issues surrounding gym memberships show no sign of change,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB serving Chicago and northern Illinois. “Picking the best gym or fitness center for your personal interests can be a difficult choice, so check each one’s rating on the BBB website.”

Five questions consumers should ask a gym before joining: What are the terms of any introductory offers?

Gyms often use special introductory offers to lure in new members. Make sure you understand the terms and what the price will be once the introductory period is over.

Will my membership renew automatically?

Many times people who join a gym don’t realize that their contract renews automatically and that they would have to take specific steps to cancel their contract.

How can I get out of my contract?

Getting out of a gym contract isn’t always as easy as getting into one, so make sure you understand what steps you would need to take to cancel your membership.

Payton also explains that all award money is not tied to income level or grades.

“You never know what you may qualify for,” said Payton.

In addition, you do not have to decide what school you will be attending. The FAFSA can be submitted to numerous schools and can then be used to decide what works best. Financial aid is distributed from three entities: the federal government, state government, and the individual school or university, which may all offer something different.

She cannot emphasize enough the need to apply early, making the difference in receiving funds such as MAP and Pell grants that already are being affected by the state budget crisis. Applying does not guarantee an award.

She said, in Illinois, if you qualify for an allocation, you will be notified by the end of February or early March. Leaving those that apply

later, often times, out of luck.

Payton said the application process can be daunting and is why school officials will be on hand to help. During FAFSA night, parents and students should bring their Social Security numbers, most recent federal income tax returns, W-2s, their Federal Student Aid Identification Number and any other records of recent money earned.

To avoid any potential issues, create a Federal Student Aid ID before coming to the event. The Federal Student Aid ID is the username and password used to login and file the FAFSA. To do so, check out: http://fsaid.ed.gov.

In addition, it is important to note for those that have filed in the past, the federal government used a Federal Student Aid PIN. Starting this year, the Federal Student Aid PIN has been replaced by the FSA ID, so everyone needs to create a FSA ID, as the Federal Student Aid PIN will no longer work to file the FAFSA.
