WELCOME TO FROM THE CHAIRMAN... FROM THE CHAIRMAN...
THE SETT
As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club, I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and I hope that you have an enjoyable visit.
Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.
We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of our adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things!
There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.
Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players and wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy.
Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community sets us apart from other clubs.
Success and progression starts from the beginnings.
Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Kev
Kevin Gardner, Chairman
Bugbroooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors.
FEMALE FOOTBALL
##HERGAMETOO HERGAMETOO @ THE SETT
Here at The Sett we are passionate about growing and developing the female pathway within the club. This season, and for the first time in our history, we have 4 female teams, the ladies team, the U18’s girls team and 2 U12’s girls teams. We are really proud of the positive growth of the female game at Bugbrooke and are looking forward to the future and hopefully more female teams to follow.
Ahead of the previous ladies FA Cup game our 2 U12’s girls teams were invited to the game as guests of honour. They had a great day, playing on the main pitch before the game and at half time, meeting the players and seeing the ladies progress to the FA Cup - 2nd round qualifying.
The U12’s are in their second season together, and are progressing all the time and the most important thing is they’re enjoying their football and making friends along the way.
Both teams would like to wish the ladies all the very best of luck ahead of their FA cup game on Sunday and also to our brand new U18’s girls team, who kick off their season this Saturday in their respective league.

Bugb hat first season we were placed the NWGFL Premier Division and ended up avoiding relegation on the last day of the season. In each of the following 3 seasons we worked hard and progressed and improved each year, winning the League cup in 2022 and completing the league and cup double in 2023-24. During this period we have also entered the Women’s Fa Cup, and last season we were a penalty shootout away from being in the 1st Round proper -exiting the competition in the 3rd Qualifying Round - a great achievement for a team of our stature. All of this was achieved with almost the same group of players who started in 2020. Winning the league last season meant we could apply for promotion to Step 6which was granted- so this season we are playing in the East Midlands Regional Division 1. Sadly we lost a few of our original playing squad due various reasons such as retirement, pregnancy and university commitments. However, on a positive note we now another experienced coach - Alex De Boer - who joined the management team having previously coached at Northampton Town Fc. We have also successfully recruited a number of new players in to the squad to fill the gaps left by those who could no longer play. A number of these new players have experience of playing at Step 6 so we are really to have them on board. Whilst we are fully aware that it will be a much bigger challenge for us all at this level - we are very much embracing the challenge and look forward to seeing how we improve during the season. We know it will take a bit of time for our new look squad to gel but we are confident that we will continue our journey and our progression with the Ladies Team.
Stuart White - Ladies Team Manager
NOTES MMANAGERS ANAGERS
Good afternoon, and a warm welcome to the sett for today’s fixture.
We have a new look management team and playing squad for this seasons United counties premier division south campaign. And we look to continue the excellent finish from last season from the previous management duo of Dale and Daniel.
Good luck to Dale on his switch from manager to committee member and also to Daniel “Powly” Powell who’s taking charge of the reserves this season.
We (Ben Foster & Ryan Nash) had a tough job of rebuilding the squad this season as lots of players had decided to move on to pastures new for the upcoming 24/25 season.
We have tried our best to maintain Bugbrooke tradition and bring through as many of the very successful U18 youth players as we can, together with a mix of new signings and the few players we did retain from last year. We hope this can give us a good balance for a successful season.
We know this league will be as tough as ever with some very good sides competing for one prize, Rugby Borough, Daventry, St Neots, March Town to name a few.
Hopefully our lads can hit the ground running and it will not only be a good campaign points wise but some much needed experience for the excellent youth players we have produced at this club that are taking part in their first season in senior football.
Thank you very much for your support today and we hope this can be continued throughout the season to cheer on the first, reserve and A teams in their quest for success.
Thanks Nashy & Foz.
OUR HISTORY BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS FC
Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.
The club, which is named after the local St Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immense success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937
The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful, winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950, and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954.
We finally won the N F A Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup
The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A Lower Junior Cup again.
The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when we took the decision to join the United Counties League.
At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 4 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 15 youth teams.
The club has continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N F A Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993, and U.C.L Division One winners in 2001.
The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs
The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse flyer They, along with the supporters of the club, have built up the excellent changing room sand clubhouse since 1980
We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future
ON CHENECKS TODAY’S VISITORS
The club was founded as Chenecks FC in 1946 under the guidance of well-known Coroner Sergeant of the Borough Police, George Lloyd. The club was formed to enable boys at the rugby playing Northampton Grammar School to play football The club's unusual name is derived from the School Houses, Chipsey, Spencer, Beckett and St Crispins. The club became members of the Northampton Minor League playing at Under 17 level, and when the team were too old for youth football the club joined the Northampton Town League in 1950, playing at Abington Park. In 1960 the Old Northamptonians Association invited the club to become one of their sports sections, thus Chenecks became ON Chenecks and relocated to the Billing Road sports ground. They joined the United Counties Football League in 1969, and have had continuous membership ever since, albeit for most of the early years in the lower divisions of the league. The club has twice won the Division One Championship in 1977-78 and 1979–80, but were denied promotion to the Premier Division due to ground grading criteria as the club were restricted to develop their shared facilities.
ON Chenecks beat Tam O'Shanter from Coventry to win the 1985 Daventry Charity Cup final and in 1994 they were Northants Junior Cup runners-up, losing 1-0 to Vanaid. In 1996 they lost 4-0 to Cogenhoe in the Daventry Charity Cup final having beaten Southern League Rothwell Town 1-0 away en route to the final. In the 2009–10 season the club won its first major honour under the guidance of Andy Marks when they picked up the Northants Junior Cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals N’ton Silbey Rangers at Nene Park. The 2010–11 season saw rookie manager Graham Cottle accept the vacant position. Under his guidance the club had considerable success, winning the Northants Junior Cup in 2013/14 and 2014/15 and gaining promotion to the top UCL flight for the first time in the club’s history after finishing runners up in 2015/16. The club also participated in a national competition for the first time, defeating Sun Sports 2-1 in the FA Vase. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr E Slinn, developments have also progressed of the field, with the erection of floodlights, extra seating, pitch barriers etc over the last couple of years which has enabled the club to secure the sufficient ground grading criteria. In 2016/17 as well as participating in UCL Premier Division topflight, the club entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing to Harefield United in a replay. After finishing a highly respectable 12th position in their first topflight season, Chenecks had a change in management with highly respected UCL prolific goal scorer Ben Foster taking over the managers hot seat, with a 17th place finish in the 2017-18 season and 15th spot secured in 201819. Club Secretary Bryan Lewin picked up the UCL Administrator of the Year Award in 2019.

As with all other clubs and leagues, the last two seasons have been affected by the Covid pandemic, which has seen both campaigns unfinished, although both the First and Reserves did reach the UCL Supplementary Cup finals in 2020-21, with the Reserves defeating Harborough 4-3 after penalty kicks to secure the trophy. In the close season Ben Foster stepped down for personal reasons and has been replaced internally with two of his backroom staff; Lee Burdett and Wayne Richardson promoted as Joint Managers. After two seasons with Covid restrictions the 2021-22 season saw Chenecks finish second from bottom, despite a strong end to the campaign. As part of the FA’s National League System restructuring, Chenecks relegation saw them placed in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One along with a host of ex-UCL clubs. The 2022-23 season the club had a new management team, headed by Jamie Forester. The new look side had an excellent campaign finishing just nine points shy of runaway champions Real Bedford but lost out in the final play-off promotion match to Rugby Borough. Last season the club went one better under new manager Dave White, winning the SSML Division One title in style, losing just one game and in doing so return to familiar territory of the UCL.
