As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit.

Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things!

There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.

Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy.

Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs.

Success and progression starts from the beginnings.

Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors. the Chairman

We’d like to start today’s notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of MK Irish who are the visitors to the Sett for this evenings United Counties Premier Division South fixture

It’s nice to finally be back at home after what feels like weeks on the road; better still it’s a game under the lights! There’s nothing quite like a mid week fixture although sadly it is currently our last scheduled one of the season!

Since we last played at the Sett, we have had three successive away fixtures which have resulted in contrasting outcomes. We started with a hard fought and deserved point at Desborough which came courtesy of a first senior goal for Mac Coulson.

We then made the short trip down M1 to face unbeaten 21/22 FA Vase winners Newport Pagnell. In an even match we found ourselves a goal behind early in the second half however that lead was short lived as substitute Akram Lasalire scored on his debut before we scored a last minute winner when an audacious lob from Will Glennon on halfway line bounced back off post, onto the retreating goalkeeper and into net sparking wild scenes that went on long into the night!

Buoyed by this result we then made the trip to Easington Sports where we sadly succumbed to a single goal defeat against a hardworking side who were reduced to 10 men for nearly an hour.

If proof was needed as to how even this season will be then it was there for all to see on Saturday.

Tonight, which is the start of four home games on the bounce, we face a difficult task against an MK Irish side that have made a decent start to the season. It’s certainly a game where we will need to be at our best if we are to get a result.

Away from the First Team and looking ahead to Thursday evening our Under 18’s play at home against Hitchin Town in the FA Youth Cup. These are always special occasions under the lights therefore it would be great to see as much support as possible to hopefully cheer our young Badgers onto a place in the next round.

Before that the ‘A’ Team are at home on Wednesday evening when they host Blisworth in the NTFA Gorrell Barnes Cup, again it’d be great to have a good crowd to support the Badgers.

Finally, on Sunday our Ladies side travel to Mansfield Town in Women’s FA Cup. Best of luck girls!

Anyway, as always thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again on Saturday when Histon are the visitors to the Sett. MANAGERS NOTES

“If proof was needed as to how even this season is likely to be then it was there for all to see on Saturday.”

BSMFC OUR HISTORY

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.

The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937.

The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954.

We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup.

The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again.

The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams.

The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001.

The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs.

The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hard working committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980.

We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

TODAYS VISITORS

On June 1st 2020 the club was formed when Milton Keynes Robins, Unite MK and Milton Keynes Irish Veterans joined together to operate as one club going into the 2020/21 season, Milton Keynes Irish FC! The first team playing at Step 6 in the Spartan South Midlands Division One, the newly formed reserve team playing in the UCL Reserve Division and the Veterans playing in the Veterans League Division One. There are also adult teams in the North Bucks & District League and the Milton Keynes Sunday League.

Our first season as a club was unfortunately brought to an early finish due to the effects of COVID 19. The 2020/21 season was looking to be very promising as we found the first team sitting second in the table after 9 games played with the best PPG in the league and went on an exciting run in the FA Vase which saw us get knocked out in the 3rd round on penalties after advancing through 4 rounds beating three higher league opposition.

The season was officially curtailed, however due to performances under Milton Keynes Robins, the club earned promotion to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division (Step 5) based on PPG over the previous 2 seasons.

2021 22 also saw the addition of an U18 Floodlit team (run by MK College under the Adopt a Team Scheme) and another 5 youth teams who came over to join under the MK Irish banner from Scot FC, increasing the number of teams to 11.

2022 23 will see the first team playing in the United Counties League with the Reserves after a sideways move, the Sunday team have been promoted to the Premier Division whilst the Veterans are holders of their Division 1 League and Cup plus the Veterans Plate. The North Bucks League team have been folded after finishing runners up of the Premier Division but another 2 youth teams have been added so that the age range is now U8 to U16.

” Grande Torino”

When we consider Italian football, some names just leap off of the page. Juventus, Milan, and Inter have dominated on the Italian peninsula, and for some the romance of Fiorentina, the Maradona linked Napoli or the rare success of Roma stand out. But things could have been very different in Serie A, as another side could, perhaps should, be above them all. Despite only winning one league title since 1950, Torino built something in the 1940s that threatened to take over Italian football and certainly outshone their city rivals. Their legacy, however, was cut short in its prime, in 1949, allowing Juventus to claim supremacy in Italy

The 1930s saw something of a power vacuum at the top of Italian football. Despite some early Juventus dominance, they had struggled, and nobody had been able to claim their crown on a consistent basis. Across the city, however, that was about to change. Former Torino player Ferruccio Novo had made a fortune in industry after leaving the game, and at the age of 42 returned to his club as President, ready to create something special. His first call was to Vittorio Pozzo, who had just won back to back World Cup’s as Italy manager, and Pozzo recommended a complete overhaul of the club to follow a more English model. Novo agreed, and set about filling his staff positions with accomplished, experienced experts. With Jewish Erno Egri Erbstein brought in as a technical director. He was one of a famed crop of Hungarian technicians who helped make the nation one of the most influential in the history of football, but because of racial laws was forced to work incognito.

Between them, Novo and Erbstein made radical changes to the club, most importantly switching to a WM formation popularised by Herbert Chapman. The first signing was an 18 year old striker from Varese, Franco Ossola, who would become an important part of the side. In his first season at the club, Torino went from mid table obscurity to just four points from champions Bologna, their best position since the unification of the Italian leagues into a national division.

The following season, with the disruption of war, saw them slip a little, but Mussolini’s declaration that players were more required on the football field than the battlefield ensured the league remained competitive. Novo took advantage of the austerity of the wartime conditions by splashing his own cash, bringing in five players, including three from neighbouring Juventus.

Sadly, as the war intensified, Erbstein was forced to flee back to Hungary, where he would later be captured and sent to a concentration camp. Torino, however, thrived in the conditions, just missing out on the title again in 1942 before becoming the first Italian team to win the double in 1943. This would be the final season unbroken by war.

Following the conclusion of hostilities, however, Torino were ready to go. The damage caused throughout Italy forced the decision to, for one season only, revert to a regional group structure with a national championship game, which Torino won. This disruption means that the achievement is often not counted officially, but it didn’t matter to Torino, who had an additional boost ready for the 1946 7 season: Erbstein, having survived the holocaust, was returned as manager.

It was fitting, after initially setting up the success, that Erbstein would be there to oversee its ultimate dominance. Torino secured a strangely organised title again in 1947, before more traditional titles in 1948 and 1949. 1948 in particular saw some scintillating football: Torino won the league at a canter by 16 points, securing a 10 0 win, a 21 match unbeaten run, and scoring 125 goals.

Torino were on a high, and unsurprisingly their presence was requested across Europe. Near the conclusion of the 48 49 season, they flew out Benfica to play a friendly in honour of their captain. On the return flight, in thick fog, the pilot brought the plane down to land. Strong winds and the poor visibility had blown him off course, although how much he would know about it nobody will ever know.

The first the residents of Turin knew was when a loud explosion lit up the sky on the outskirts of Turin. The plane had crashed into the Basilica di Superga with the death of all aboard. That included Erbstein, and the entire squad, barring two reserve players.

The tragedy reverberated through Italian football, and the side were declared champions with four games remaining at the behest of their rivals. The crash is commemorated annually, but the club has never recovered from it. They have spent the last 70 years in the shadow of their city rivals, but things could have been so different.

Enjoy the game.
