Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

From the Chairman … Kev

There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.

We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things!

As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit.

Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings.

Kevin Gardner, Chairman Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors.

Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Dale & Daniel

We’d like to start today’s notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Godmanchester Rovers who are the visitors to the Sett for today’s United Counties Premier Division South fixture. Due to editorial constraints (holiday) we are having to write these notes prior to our FA Vase tie at Wellingborough Town. “ sideItwasatoughgameagainstagoodwiththegameprovidingmoreevidencethatyouarepunishedfor everymistakeatthislevel.”

THE GAFFER’S NOTES

Hopefully, by the time you read this we will have made it through what on paper is an extremely difficult tie. Like Rugby Town we fully expect Wellingborough to be challenging at the top end of the table this season. Looking back to our last league fixture, we faced GNG Oadby Town, a tough game was expected against a team that had started the season well, sitting fifth in the table prior to kick off; that said and without being disrespectful to Oadby these are the sort of teams that we need to be taking points from this season, especially here at the Sett. In an entertaining game it was Oadby who took the lead mid-way through the first half, the goal coming against the run of play. Not long after it could so easily have been two when a shot from outside the box crashed back off the crossbar, maybe this was the bit of luck that we deserved as we re grouped allowing us to find an equaliser before the break. The second half was a real end to end affair and as it was it was ourselves who came out deserved 4-2 winners. It was a tough game against a good side with the game providing more evidence that you are punished for every mistake at this level. On the player front it was great to see Eddie Panter start his first game of the season and With Will Jones scoring a hat-trick we know that goals won’t be an issue this season. Slowly but surely, other players are returning which will only help us improve. Anyway, as always thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again on Saturday when we welcome Heather St Johns in the UCL Cup next Saturday.

BSMFC OUR HISTORY

The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams.

The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup.

The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in The2001.reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hard working committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.

The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937.

The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again.

The 2018 2019 season saw the retention of the majority of the playing squad from the previous season and despite a strong winning run of pre season matches and a win in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round, Rovers lost their opening League match but bounced back with a FA Cup win in the next game. This was the start of pattern that Godmanchester had throughout the season, strong performances in Cup games but mixed in AsLeague.weall know the 2019 2020 ended abruptly, however this allowed the club to work on and allow the pitch to have a long recovery. Hopefully that work has paid off and the pitch is a little more resilient to heavy Asrainfall.with the 2019 2020 season and Covid 19, 2020 21 started with no spectators and just 9 games played before the season was ended and nulled. The club took the opportunity whilst the ground was void of any sport and spectators to embark on several ground improvements and renovations. The biggest undertaking was a large expansion on the Club House, adding a new larger kitchen for match day refreshments and larger patio

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS

In 2011 12 the club won the Eastern Counties Division One on goal difference to earn promotion to the Premier Division, also winning the Division One Knock out Cup, defeating Whitton United 1 0 in the final. After securing Premiership football for the 2017 2018 season it was marred by a large number of postponed games creating a large backlog of matches to be played, due to severe weather, notably ‘The Beast From The East’ and heavy rain.

After a slow start results started to improve with the return of a number of players that departed at the end of the 2016 2017 which helped earn a respectable 4th place. During the season break work was undertaken to add further drainage to the pitch to elevate potential postponed matches.

Situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse, 16 miles North West of Cambridge, on the A14. Godmanchester is a town, not a village as it was chartered in 1212 and again in 1604. Godmanchester has been inhabited for over 2000 years and was a very important Roman Footballsettlement.hasbeenplayed in Godmanchester since the late 1890’s with Godmanchester Rovers coming into existence in 1911, previously playing as Godmanchester Town.

The first recorded mention of the club is from the ‘Cambridge Independent Press’ newspaper dated Friday 26th December 1913 where Godmanchester Rovers had a fixture against St Ives on Boxing Day. During the 1928 29 season, when they won the Hunts Junior Cup. They played in the Huntingdonshire League for many years before joining the Cambridgeshire League. They won the Hunts Junior Cup again in 1988 89, and in 1992 were promoted to the top division of the Cambridgeshire League. In 1994 95 they won the League Cup, retaining it for the next two seasons. However, they were relegated to the Senior Division in 2000. With the club about to move into a new ground, they made a speculative application to join the Eastern CountiesLeague in 2002. Despite being in the second tier of the Cambridgeshire League, the club were successful.

Beforearea. the start of the 2021 22, First Team manager, Ollie Drake departed the club making way for Dean Greygoose to take charge with a fresh squad of players.

The game had barely re started when the final whistle was blown bringing an end to an exhilarating contest.

Unsettled by conceding the equaliser Bugbrooke were indebted to a fantastic goal line block by Brandon Hallmark to maintain parity. With changes afoot and both teams pressing forward gaps appeared therefore it came as no surprise when the Badgers restored their advantage in the 70th minute, Will Jones scoring from close range following up after his initial header had bounced back off the crossbar, 3 2. Holding a slender lead with the final whistle approaching nerves set in as on more than one occasion Oadby were afforded too much time and space, with two good efforts from distance superbly saved by Luke Reeve in the Bugbrooke goal.

Having gone close through Jones and Panter it came as no surprise when the Badgers re took the lead on 58 minutes when a cross to the far post found Trent Oakes who swept the ball home from close range for his second goal of the season, 2 1 and no more than the Badgers deserved.

Into added time and the points were finally secured as following excellent work by Simmons to win possession on the left hand side, the ball eventually found Will Jones, who kept his composure to clip the ball past the on rushing goalkeeper and just inside the post for his first Bugbrooke hat trick, 4 2 and jubilation for the Badgers players and bench.

HALF BUGBROOKETIME ST MICHAELS: 1 GNG OADBY TOWN: 1 With both teams sensing the points were there for the taking the second half was played at a frantic pace as the game became an end to end encounter. With the Badgers rearguard dealing well with anything Oadby could muster in attack it was the hosts who appeared most likely to score the next goal with the trio of Jones, Panter and Shehi giving the Oadby backline plenty to think about.

Having fought so hard to gain the lead it came somewhat of a disappointment when Oadby drew level just a minute later as a corner was only half cleared and the resulting cross shot was turned home from inside the six yard box by Sukhbinder Johal for his second of the game, 2 2. With thirty minutes left on the clock there was still all to play for!

GNG Oadby Town were the visitors to the Sett as the Badgers looked to return to winning ways following consecutive away Theredefeats.were two changes to the starting XI that took to the field against Lichfield City in the FA Cup with Brandon Hallmark and Eddie Panter coming in for Mac Coulson and Freddie King who were both on the Itbench.wasa lively start by the Badgers with the returning Panter and Jones pressurizing the Oadby back line at every opportunity albeit clear chances were proving hard to come by. It was somewhat against the run of play when the visitors opened the scoring mid way through the half, with the impressive Sukhbinder Johal sweeping the ball home from close range, 0 1. Undeterred by this the Badgers pushed for an equaliser, Will Jones going close with a far post header. On 40 minutes the Badgers scored the goal that their play had deserved, the goal coming after Eddie Panter had been denied by a fantastic double save from the visiting keeper; however, with Oadby struggling to clear their lines the ball fell to Will Jones on the Badgers left hand side and his low effort went under the keeper and into the net, 1 1 and no less than the Badgers deserved

Fifteen players set off for Argentina, but almost didn’t make it at all. Their ship stopped off in Santos, where the entire squad was arrested, having not realised that public swimming was illegal. Fortunately for the history of football, they were released and went on their way to a successful tour of Argentina. Despite not having initially been invited to Brazil, their popularity prompted a few games to be organised as the Grecians stopped off on their way home, the first time an English professional team had played in the Thecountry.firstgame was against a group of English expats, a simple 3 0 win for the Southern League side, and the second was a more competitive5 3 victory against a side representing the clubs of Rio de Janeiro. For the third, Rio and Sao Paulo joined forces, something of a surprise given the rivalry between the two cities, to present a side made up of their best players. This side is now recognised as the very first Brazilian national team. The Estádio das Laranjeiras Fluminense’s home to this day was chosen for the auspicious occasion. The footballing authorities saw the game as a good test before an upcoming international tournament in Argentina, but it was more than practice to the fans. 10,000 packed into the 6,000 capacity stadium and onto it, with no room even on the roof to see their side in brilliant white shirts with a blue stripe on the arm; Brazil wouldn’t adopt their famous yellow shirts until after their defeat in the 1950 World Cup final.

When we look at the history of football, one nation stands out above every other. Brazil have won the World Cup five times, a record, and have produced not just some of the best players of all time, but arguably the greatest of them all. But they are more than just a successful side; they have defined the sport in the imaginations of generations of children across the globe. O Jogo Bonito the beautiful game the phrase that most emphatically defines football, was popularised by Pelé himself. When people think of the way the game should be played, they think of Brazil. So, it may be surprising to learn that this journey began, just over one hundred years ago, in Devon. And it wasn’t supposed to happen at all. In the summer of 1914, following the example of several more successful European sides, Exeter City accepted the invitation of a nascent Argentinian FA to tour the country. These tours were lucrative for all involved, and despite being in the Southern League at the time, Exeter were chosen as a “truly representative” example of English football.

” The Birth of Brazil”

When Oswaldo Gomes opened the scoring for the hosts, the thousands went wild, “waving hats and walking sticks, and in the stands ladies and young girls waved handkerchiefs, shouting hurrahs" according to local newspapers. Exeter responded, displaying all the cynicism that would hamstring English football for nearly half a century, by making the game for physical, reportedly causing facial injuries to star Brazilian striker Arthur Friedenreich (pictured), costing him two teeth. His suffering, however exaggerated, has become a touchstone for Brazilian football, standing up against the imperial injustices of the Europeans. He responded by finding Osman for Brazil’s second, after which (according to the Brazilian story), Exeter descended into violence, but to no Theavail.final whistle saw the players carried off on the shoulders of the crowd and praised for the “mastery” of their style in undoing the English professionals. They were proclaimed national heroes.

And in most nations, that would be that. A victorious introduction to international football, part of a sporting history but not a part of the national ideology. But Brazil was different. It had only been truly independent for 25 years in 1914, and because of its size it was unwieldy and difficult to unite.

Travel was a challenge, with the most reliable method of going from north to south still being by steamer along the coast, and the different regions acting, in some ways, as autonomous states. Brazil was desperate for an outlet, an identity on which they could pin their nationhood. And in these national heroes, they found just that. Which is why in Brazil, more than any other nation, football reigns. Enjoy the game.
