Kevin Gardner, Chairman Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors.

Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy. Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs. Success and progression starts from the beginnings.

As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit.

Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things!

Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

From the Chairman … Kev

There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.

“ ourHopefully,wewillgettheresultthatperformancesdeserve.Iknow thattheladswillbegivingtheirall!”

Dale & Daniel

Firstly, on a sweltering day we made the trip to Rugby Town who are most people’s favourites to be Champions come what May. Despite suffering a 2 0 defeat the lads put in a fantastic shift, giving a terrific account of themselves. In fact, we finished the stronger team, hitting the post late on whilst creating numerous other chances. On another day we could have taken more. Our second game came on Saturday in FA Cup where we were up against another strong side in Lichfield City. Once again, we fell to a 2 0 defeat. We certainly deserved a goal for our efforts which could have set up a tense finale. We are learning the hard way. Mistakes are being punished but we must mention that NINE of the starting eleven on Saturday were aged 19 or under and the 3 subs that were used were 20 or under. The fact that we are competing bodes well not only for now but for the future as well. Onto tonight, and we face a Oadby Town side who have made a decent start so we know that we must be on our game to get a result. Hopefully, we will maintain the performance level and get the result that we deserve. I know that the lads will be giving their all! Slowly the injured players are returning to training which will lift everyone.

We’d like to start today’s notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of GNG Oadby Town who are the visitors to the Sett for tonight’s United Counties Premier Division South fixture. We’re writing these notes following two tough games on the road.

Well done to the Reserves on their start and good luck to the Under 18’s who start their league campaign on Thursday. Anyway, as always thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again on Saturday when we travel to Wellingborough Town in the FA Vase.

The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again.

The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams.

The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in The2001.reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs. The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hard working committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980. We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954. We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup.

The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937.

BSMFC OUR HISTORY

G.N.G OADBY TOWN

LEAGUE POS: FORM GUIDE: 5th – P4 W2 D1 L1 Pts 7 W L D W

The exact year of formation of today’s visitors GNG Oadby Town is unknown however it is believed to be either 1937 or 1939 under the guise of Oadby Imperial. The club did not have to wait long for their first honours winning the “City Medals” competition in the 1939 40 season. Around 1943 the club merged with a local junior side to become Oadby United, two years later in 1949 they reverted to original name of Oadby Imperial which coincided being accepted into the Leicestershire Senior League Division 2 for the 1949 50 season. The first season saw the club finish in 11th place out of 16. In 1951 Oadby Imperial changed their name to become Oadby Town FC. In the same year they won the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two Championship and were promoted to Division One (later to become the Premier League). The 1956 57 season saw the club finish as runners up in the Leicestershire Senior League to Leicester City ‘A’ and were also runners up to Whitwick Colliery in the Coalville Charity Cup. It wasn’t until 1963 that the club won its first major honours winning the Leicestershire Senior Cup for the first time beating Newfoundpool WMC in the final. The following season saw three pieces of silverware collected as well as retaining their Leicestershire Senior Cup crown, Oadby were also Leicestershire Senior League champions for the first time and won the Coalville Charity Cup for a second time. It was to be a further four years (1967 68) for Oadby to regain the Senior League crown and for good measure they retained their Senior League title the following year and also added the Leicestershire Challenge and Rolleston Charity Cups. A fourth Senior League crown was achieved in the 1972 73 season. This was to be the last league title for over twenty years as it was not until the 1994 95 season that they regained the title.

Lee Harriman, former Coalville Town chief, was appointed manager for the 2011 12 season. Oadby managed a successful season with a decent run in the FA Vase, being the only team from below Step 5 to reach the 5th Round, losing to Staveley Miners Welfare. Oadby Town moved across to the United Counties League Division One (Step 6) for the 2012 13 season. Turbulent times followed over a few seasons with various management changes and inevitable financial pressures forcing the committee to regrettably resign the club from the United Counties League towards the end of last season due to unsustainable financial pressures. The club was fortunately reinstated without hesitation or fear of further stresses and strains by a fresh consortium with some of the existing staff and players..

James Beeson did well to prevent the Badgers from halving the deficit when he did superbly well to close down the angle on substitute Eddie Panter near the by line, smothering the ball at his near post. As the game moved into the final stages, the Badgers threw everything at their hosts in an effort to break down the door however the goal wasn’t forthcoming mainly down to the fantastic defensive work from the back four with the pairing of Leighton McMenemy and Jamie Elkes proving to be a formidable partnership in the centre of the hosts defence

Soon after Joe Haines nearly struck his first of the season but his powerfully struck left footed effort was well kept out by Luke Reeve in the Bugbrooke goal.

The win sees Lichfield City into the hat for the First Qualifying Round with Monday’s draw pairing them at Home against Stourport Swifts.

ETHAN MUCKLEY, SAM FITZGERALD

Soon after a Tom Simmons cross from a free kick bounced awkwardly in the penalty box, the ball ran through to Will Glennon however his headed effort didn’t have the requisite power to cause issues for goalkeeper James Beeson. Despite the growing pressure from Bugbrooke, Lichfield nearly doubled their lead 32 minutes, a Luke Childs shot from the right side of the penalty box was parried by goalkeeper Luke Reeve onto the crossbar a fantastic save much to Childs’ dismay.

HALF LICHFIELDTIMECITY: 1 BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS: 0

The referee’s whistle had barely left his mouth to start the game by the time the ball had found its way into the back of the Badgers net, as a seemingly innocuous clip over the top from Jamie Elkes caused mayhem. Ethan Muckley latched onto the ball, flicking it past the on rushing Luke Reeve and into the empty net, 1 0. In a carbon copy of the first goal the home side almost doubled their lead when on 15 minutes when left back Joe Haines dinked another ball in behind the Badgers defence, Muckley’s eyes lit up as he wriggled his way through, however his dinked effort had too much on it and it sailed just over the crossbar. It wasn’t one way traffic and as the half progressed Bugbrooke grew in confidence and began to register chances of their own, Will Jones going close as he turned away from Jamie Elkes in the 18 yard box, before firing his right footed shot just past the post.

The Badgers made a trip into the unknown as the travelled to Lichfield City in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. As it was goals from Ethan Muckley, his fifth in four games and Sam Fitzgerald his third in two games were enough to seal the win for the hosts and with it a place in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for just the third time in the club’s history.

Kyle Patterson started a counterattack following a Bugbrooke corner, he played it wide to Chandler Pegg on the left, who in turn played it across the penalty area to Sam Fitzgerald who touched it perfectly past the onrushing Reeve before rolling it into the empty net, 2 0.

Louis Rocca, born in 1882, was promised a beating for sneaking under the fence at his local football club, but instead was given the task of making tea for the players at half time. He dutifully and enthusiasticallyaccepted his new position, and before long was also given the job of first team kitman, a coveted position that made him the envy of older children in the area. Before the end of the nineteenth century, he was the club’s first ever groundsman, but things were not rosy at Newton Heath. By 1902 the club had racked up considerable debts and needed to raise funds to stay in existence. Rocca and other volunteerstoured around the city for four days soliciting donations, notably taking a dog with them with a moneybox strapped to its back. It was this dog who would ultimately save the club when he escaped, setting up a fortuitous meeting with John Henry Davies, who would step in and buy the club. His vision for the team was grand, much grander than the small confines of Newton Heath. He proposed a name change, and while Manchester Celtic was considered, Rocca, just 19 at the time, is said (mostly by himself) to have suggested the name United. It stuck, and the club we know today was born.

Five years later, Rocca made the move that would shape the soul of the club, rather than just the name above the door. He was appointed as Chief Scout and created an extensive and inexpensive scouting network throughout Manchester, enlisting the help of priests and schoolteachers and other volunteersto report back to him any exciting youngsters found in school and youth teams. He also had the local newspapers from each Saturday night brought to him every week and poured through the local match reports. Any name that cropped up repeatedly, he would go to watch in person. If they impressed him, he would invite the to join Manchester United. The new system, along with Davies’ investment, led United to their first major trophies, the First Division title in 1908 and 1911, with the FA Cup in 1909.

Manchester United are (notwithstanding their recent difficulties) one of the most successful football clubs in Europe, and one of the biggest sporting brands in the world. When the story of their success is written, certain obvious names leap off of the page. Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes. This list goes on and on. But before all of them, and the man without whom Manchester United simply wouldn’t be what they are today, was an Italian immigrant who snuck in to watch Newton Heath. It was the beginning of a lifelong relationship.

The Tea Boy who Created a Dynasty”

Rocca dreamed of a team made up of local players, who represented the people on the terraces. A couple of decades of building followed before, in the early 1930s, United were bought out of more financial difficulty by James Gibson. The new owner shared Rocca’s dream and allowed him (and new addition Walter Crickmer) to set up the Manchester United Junior Athletic Club, what would now be understood as an academy. The system was a great success in finding and developing local players, but war in 1939 limited how the system translated into the senior team. It wasn’t until after the war that the fruits of Rocca’s labour could really be seen.

Rocca passed away in 1950, unable to see the fruits of his work in all their glory as first the Busby Babes, and later Busby’s rebuilt side after the Munich Disaster, changed the face of English football forever. But make no mistake, those sides, and the legacy of Manchester United, could not have existed without the Italian. As Matt Busby wrote some four decades after Rocca’s death, “he was a tremendous help to me in every way.” Enjoy the game.

As the war concluded, Man United needed a new manager, and Gibson and Rocca thought they knew just the man. They had to act quickly though, as he had been offered a position in Liverpool’s staff. Rocca reached out to one of his old friends quite cryptically, not wanting Liverpool to intercept the letter, and invited him to Old Trafford. That friend was Matt Busby. Busby hired Jimmy Murphy as his assistant, and Rocca watched as his friend led a team full of the Junior Athletic Club’s protégés to the 1948 FA Cup.
