From the Chairman …

As Chairman of Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club I would like to offer you a warm welcome to The Sett and hope that you have an enjoyable visit.

Here at Bugbrooke St Michaels we are working hard to develop a club with a strong inclusive ethos, offering opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

We are extremely proud of our youth development programme, supporting players from seven all the way up to eighteen. Many of our young players go on to have success with one of four adult teams, with some players going on to even bigger and better things!

There is a great wealth of local support for the club, everyone that helps does so on a voluntary basis and through everyone’s hard work and dedication we have been able to achieve and maintain FA Accredited status.

Whilst some clubs choose to reinvest their revenue into players wages, here at Bugbrooke we hold a different set of values. All of our profits go into upgrading our equipment and facilities, building a solid future-proof foundation that will be here for future generations to enjoy.

Whilst this can sometimes hold us back from gaining huge success on the pitch, we feel our excellent facilities, youth development programme and ethos on community set us apart from other clubs.

Success and progression starts from the beginnings.

Thank you for your support today, we hope that you enjoy the game, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club would like to place on record our thanks to our team of volunteers, our advertisers and sponsors.

Kev

BSMFC MANAGERS NOTES

Good afternoon. We’d like to start today’s Programme notes by extending a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Long Buckby AFC who are the visitors to the Sett for today’s United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

Following a month on the road its great to be back at the Sett with today’s fixture against Long Buckby representing the first of three successive Home fixtures with games against Cogenhoe United and Lutterworth Town to follow over the Easter period.

Let’s hope that we can maintain our current run of form as we aim to pick up more points in our quest to finish as high as possible in the Division.

As we have done all season, we will take it one game at a time starting with Long Buckby, who despite their current struggles are not to be underestimated. They picked up a good win at Eynesbury last weekend which was followed by a battling mid-week performance ultimately ending in defeat against March Town; proof that the players have personal pride and are continuing to play for the shirt.

Focusing on ourselves it’s been a great month with five wins from our six matches. Even the game that we lost could have been different and, on another day, we would have picked up points at Lutterworth.

This is in stark contrast to what had gone before which was one win in nine, a run that saw us looking over our shoulder a little. It just goes to show how quickly fortunes can change in football.

In comparison to many of our rivals the fact that our young squad is more than holding its own at Step 5 is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the application of the players and support staff. With five games left, four of which at Home the challenge is for us to finish the season on a positive note as we look to lay the foundations for next season.

On the player front the Transfer Deadline has now been and gone and whilst we have been able to add a couple of youthful additions to the squad, we were disappointed to lose the services of Will Glennon, who has taken the opportunity to test himself at Step 3 with AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

Up until last Saturday Will had been an ever present for us, he is also our top goal scorer with 16 goals. There is no doubt that our loss is Diamonds gain however we will never stand in the way of a young player that wants to test themself at a higher level. Best wishes to Will, the door will remain open.

As always thank you for your support, enjoy the game and we look forward to seeing you again next Saturday when Cogenhoe United are the visitors to the Sett.

“Focusing on ourselves it’s been a great month with five wins from our six matches”

BSMFC OUR HISTORY

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.

The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937.

The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners-up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954.

We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup.

The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup again.

The club continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when the we took the decision to join the United Counties League.

At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams.

The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001.

The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs.

The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hardworking committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980.

We hope that you enjoy the facilities that they have provided over those years, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future

LONG BUCKBY AFC

MANAGER: LAST TIME OUT: CRAIG HAYWARD LOST 2-5 vs MARCH TOWN

Formally known as Long Buckby Nomads, the current club was re-formed after the war in 1945 due to the efforts of local hairdresser Bill Ward amongst others.

There followed many successful seasons in the Rugby and District League and the Northants Football Combination.

With numerous ground improvements on the Sports Field and the beginnings of a fledgling Sports and Social Club, the Bucks gathered a strong enough squad during the 1968/69 seasons to apply and be accepted into the United Counties Football League in 1969. Manager at the time was Alan Rose who would go on to lead the club to honours in future years.

Soon after entering the UCL he brought in Pete Smith to replace himself as manager. Under Pete Smith the club won Division 3 in 1969-70 and then won Division 2 in 1970-71 but were refused promotion due to the facilities. But they won it again in 1971-72 and this time were promoted, into the newly renamed Premier Division.

During their promotion season to the Premier Division the club also won the UCL Division 2 KO Cup, the Northants Junior Cup and the Daventry Charity Cup. Following on from Pete Smith was former player Dave Conlon, Alan Rose (again) and former Northampton Town player Roly Mills.

Alan then became manager of the Junior Teams, building a side which won many competitions including the Umbro Cup. Some of their games were played at Nottingham Forest where one of his players Gary Mills went on to win a European Cup Medal. Others were Mick Kurilla who went onto Birmingham City and Vince Overson who also Captained Birmingham City and Daryl White who went to Southampton.

After Roly Mills, Chris Beckett took over and in the 1983-4 season the club were runners up to Kettering Town in the Northants Senior Cup. The following season the Bucks were runners up in the League by one point to Arlesey Town but won the UCL KO Cup beating Baldock Town 7-3 on aggregate.

When Chris left Glenn Burdett was manager for two years. Glenn was followed by our longest serving manager Mike Emms. In his nine years the Bucks only finished in the bottom half of the table once. During this time the club moved to a new pitch after the Sports field obtained more land financed by the club and the Rugby Club as well as help from the school and the District Council. Along with this a new 200 seat stand was built, the playing area fenced off, and the floodlights refurbished and moved.

After Mike Emms left, the Bucks struggled and narrowly avoided relegation on several occasions. In January 2007 with a new Chairman Guy Loveland on board, Glenn Botterill was appointed manager bringing in former Rushden and Diamonds player Andy Peaks as his Assistant.

New players were brought in, and the Bucks again finished runners up in the UCL Premier Division in 2007-08. Botterill left in January 2009 and was replaced by Adam Sandy.

Glenn Botterill returned as manager in January 2010. Season 2011-12 saw the Bucks reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Kidsgrove Athletic and then beating the well supported Kings Lynn Town twice to finally win the UCL Premier Division Title

Unfortunately, two seasons later we lost our Premier Division status after two unfinished but successful seasons under Dan Carter, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved.

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME.’

A message from Bugbrooke St Michaels Football Club about antisocial and criminal behaviour

As we commence the new season we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football, and the NLS, to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience.

We are supporting strong action from the FA, and across the NLS to tackle antisocial and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.

Please remember the following activities are illegal, dangerous, have serious consequences and have no place in our game:

Carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros

Invading the pitch or entering the pitch without permission

Throwing objects onto the pitch

Drug use within the football ground

Discriminatory behaviour

For everyone’s safety, we will report anyone carrying out these offences to the police, which can result in a criminal record.

Anyone who enters the pitch without permission and those carrying or using smoke bombs or pyros will now receive an automatic club ban. These measures could also now apply to the parents or guardians of children involved in these activities.

This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause life changing injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. It also impacts the hard working volunteers, who ensure that our special part of the game continues to run.

We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters. Please work with us to call out the risks.

” The First World Championship”

We all know that the very first World Cup took place in 1930 and was won by Uruguay. The final was a thrilling match between the winners and their bitter South American rivals Argentina, who saw themselves as the leading footballing force, especially in the absence of the Home Nations. Uruguay would go on to win a second World Cup in 1950. But if you looked closely at their shirts at this World Cup, you would have noticed that they have not two, but four stars above their national crest, representing the four times they have been world champions. Without adding any success after 1950, just where did these other two stars come from?

The World Cup was dreamed up by Jules Rimet, who gave his name to the first trophy (gifted to Brazil after their third win in 1970, and subsequently stolen). After his appointment as FIFA President in 1921, and despite losing the membership of the English, Scottish and Welsh Football Associations, he quickly began plans for the globalisation of the game. He would be President for over three decades and grew FIFA’s membership from just a dozen nations to nearly one hundred in that time, but his legacy has been the World Cup.

Not that a standalone World Cup was an obvious development. FIFA had drawn up plans for a competition like that almost immediately from its inception in 1904, and it’s difficult to ignore Rimet’s influence in that inception. However, the idea of a global competition, held in the summer every four years, had already been enacted, and so the easiest route to achieving this in football was to add their sport to the newly existent Olympics. Which is how we come to Uruguay’s extra stars.

Unofficial reports claim that an unofficial tournament was held at the same time as the first Olympics in 1896, and it was included officially in 1900 and 1904, but not recognised by FIFA because of the disorganised nature of the competition; no ‘national’ sides were sent, and the teams were selected almost at random. In 1908, the competition became a little more formal, with Great Britain winning the gold medal, and retaining it in 1912. A break was enforced in 1916 because of the First World War, but the competition resumed in 1920 where Belgium picked up the winner’s medal. The problem was, however, that the competition was not truly global. Only European teams had competed, except for Egypt in 1920, so FIFA could not recognise any of the winners as ‘world champions’. That would change in 1924.

Turkey were recognised as an African side, so their inclusion in Paris in 1924 was a step in the right direction. More significantly, the USA sent a side, as did Uruguay, meaning that both American continents were represented. For the first time, FIFA would get a look at a global competition.

It was the South Americans who blew the competition away, beginning with the 7-0 mauling of Yugoslavia. Nineteen-year-old Pedro Petrone got the first two goals of what would be a legendary international career. In the second round, he got two more in a 30 victory over fellow debutants the United States.

The quarter finals were supposed to represent the first real test for the South American outfit, Rimet’s own France who had experience of a few Olympic Games by this point. The French side could do very little against the exciting attacking display that Uruguay offered, with Jose Leandro Andrade, ‘The Black Pearl’, dictating play and the effervescent Petrone tormenting his opponents with another brace. Uruguay ran out 5-1 winners, setting up a tense affair against the Netherlands.

Unlike the French, the Dutch really were a good footballing side. They took the lead in the 31st minute, Feyenoord’s Cornelis Pijl finding the net, before Jose Cea levelled up on the hour. Petrone would once again be the difference, however, and converted a late penalty to send the Olympic debutants to the final. A simpler affair against Switzerland saw them run out 3-0 winners and be declared footballs first true world champions. They would repeat the feat four years later in the Netherlands, but this time their bitter rivals Argentina gave them a much tougher time, taking the final to a replay and just losing out. Petrone scored in that final as well. And FIFA has seen enough.

Two years later they launched their own competition, and in Uruguay they had the perfect hosts. They won again, becoming the only sideso far – to be world champions three successive times. And yes, Petrone was involved once again. Recognising that achievement, FIFA allows them a third, and fourth, world championship star.

Enjoy the game!
