THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Desborough Town who are tonight’s visitors to the Sett for a re-arranged United Counties Premier Division South fixture.

If feels like an age since we last played at the Sett and when you look at it, it is almost a month to the day since our last home fixture which was a thrilling 5-2 win in the local derby against Long Buckby.

Since then, we have travelled to the two stand out teams in the division, Hinckley LRFC and Harborough Town, both of whom are almost certain to make the next step on the pyramid (Step 4) come the end of the season.

Being honest and it’s the same with any league from the Premier League down there are leagues within leagues, and the UCL South it is no different.

You have the aforementioned who are almost in a league of their own, then you have a group of five or six teams who are chasing and are more than capable of finishing in the top six, these come ahead of a group of ten to twelve teams, including ourselves, who are then fighting for a top half finish.

Playing against the top two sides in successive away fixtures was never going to be easy and whilst we didn’t manage to take any point’s I was pleased with how we performed against Harborough Town considering that the game came just days after a heavy defeat against Hinckley LRFC. With six fixtures left we want to finish the season as high as possible. With that in mind 3 points this evening would be welcome however, we know that Desborough will pose a difficult challenge and will make it difficult for the 90 minutes.

TODAY’S VISITORS Desborough Town have a remarkable history since it was formed in 1896 and joined the Northants League which is now known as the United Counties League.

It has been a continual member of that combination apart from Season 1945/46 when the club had not been reformed following the break for the second world war.

The club was first affiliated to the Northants Football Association in 1896 with the Secretary being Mr A.L Mobbs the landlord of the Swan Inn which used to stand in Lower Street. The club has always played its home matches at the Waterworks Field and in the early days used to change in the outbuildings at the back of the Swan Inn before marching up the Braybrooke Road to the ground. The second season saw the Formation of Northampton Town and the Cobblers first ever League game was played at the Waterworks Field on 25th September 1897 with Ar Tarn triumphing by two clear goals It was at this period that Desborough inherited the nicknames that are not forgotten with the passing of time. ‘Ar Tarn’ the local dialect meaning our town has probable survived the longest ‘The Buckets’ is a reference to the adjacent waterworks and was used by the local newspaper’s licensed crank in his reports on the Desborough matches at the time. The most infamous of them all was ‘Dirty Desborough’ which had no reference to the team at all and were remarks made by a visiting medical officer referring to the town’s poor sanitation.

Success on the field came quickly to the Desborough Town team and in season 1900/01 they captured the Northants League title for the very first time. There was a double celebration in the town as the club also captured the Northants Junior Cup beating Northampton Town Reserves in the Final Desborough’s first glory in the F.A Cup came in season 1910/11 when they reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the competition before losing to Midland League Champions Chesterfield at the Waterworks Field before a crowd of over 2000 spectators.

Chesterfield went on to beat Rotherham and Bolton before eventually losing to Chelsea. Desborough’s best run in the competition was reserved for season 1926/27 when they reached the first-round proper of the competition and were drawn at home to Doncaster Rovers.

The joy which swept the town was short lived however when the committee decided that the gate would be severely reduced by the fact that Kettering were playing Coventry City in another tie just six miles away and the game was switched to Doncaster’s Belle Vue ground. This proved to be a disastrous decision as many of the town's spectators claimed they had been robbed of the greatest game ever to be staged at the Waterworks Field and deserted the club. As a result, the club soon found itself with financial problems and the glory years of the twenties were not to be repeated. As for the game itself Desborough were drawing with just eight minutes remaining when the match was abandoned through fog and in the midweek replay, they went down by three clear goals.

The twenties were certainly the glory years for Desborough Town as they captured trophy after trophy and on only two occasions in 1949 and 1967 have, they been able to top the league chart since. However, whilst they may not have had so much success on the field the progress behind the scenes has certainly been tremendous. They have purchased the freehold of the ground allowing them a secure future, they have erected the best floodlighting system in the league and more recently have erected a first-class social club following the destruction of their original premises through fire in 2009 and in 2014 the club rebuilt the changing facilities. The transfer of the cricket club to a new ground has now seen the club in total control of their premises with full training facilities next to the main pitch

”The Darlington Maldini” Following their success at the 1966 World Cup, and the disappointment of a Quarter-Final exit in 1970, there was shock in 1973 when England, still under the command of Sir Alf Ramsey, was unable to qualify for the competition to take place in the following year. Jan Tomaszewski, branded a clown

by Brian Clough, put in a man of the match performance for Poland, and Alf Ramsey left his post to be replaced by Don Revie. But that didn’t mean England had no representation at the tournament. Most famously, Jack Taylor refereed the final between West Germany and the Netherlands. But more intriguing is the story of Joseph Wilson, Lazio legend and Italy international.

Nicknamed Pino in Italy, Wilson is still the only player from Darlington to line up at a World Cup, his name sticking out like a sore thumb on a team sheet of Dino Zoff, Fabio Capello and Sandro Mazzola. His dad had been a soldier in the Second World War and posted to Italy where he fell in love with a Neopolitan girl. He whisked her back to the North-East (which you’d have to imagine was quite a culture shock!) and she married him, giving birth to Pino in 1945. But poor Lina didn’t adapt to life in Darlington, especially once the winter set in, and the family returned when little Joseph was only six months old.

His footballing career started at local club Cirio, who were not very good, but financially stable, something that was a rarity around the city of Naples. Within a year of breaking into the first team, they were relegated to the fourth tier and changed their name to Internapoli, to give the city a stable footballing presence as nearby AC Napoli struggled.

Unfortunately for Internapoli, a week after their rebrand, AC Napoli became SSC Napoli, the one we now know, who have dominated Neapolitan football ever since.

Wilson was attracting the attention of bigger Italian clubs, and it was even mooted that he could get into the national side, but he stuck around in Naples at the insistence of his mother to finish a Law degree. That was, until Italian giants Lazio came calling. A move to one of the big boys, and a mooted chance of making the national team, had Pino on his way after just shy of 140 appearances for Internapoli. And he set about making up for lost time.

In the capital, Wilson was imperious. Lazio had endured a difficult decade, but Wilson was installed as captain, and led them to the Serie B title in 1969, his first season. A powerful, some would say almost violent centre-back, he suited the ultra-defensive catenaccio that dominated Italy at that time.

Questions over his involvement in the national side kept being asked as well, but such were Italian rules at the time that to be eligible, Wilson would have had to take 15 months out of the game for national service. He wasn’t willing to do that, having lost time at the start of his career for his studies, and focused on making Lazio as good as they could be.

The 1972/73 season saw it all click, and Lazio emerged as surprise scudetto challengers, only to lose on the last day to, wouldn’t you know it, Napoli, allowing Juventus to nick the title.

But that only strengthened Lazio’s resolve. The following season they went top early, and never looked back. With Wilson in defence and Giorgio Chanaglia up top, they had the meanest of defences and scored goals almost at will. They powered their way to the title, the first in their history, and just in time for the World Cup. By now, Wilson’s reputation was huge, and there was increasing clamour for his inclusion in the Italy squad. In the end, the authorities relented, and so it was that big Joseph Wilson made his international debut in 1974 against West Germany and went on to make his World Cup debut a few weeks later.

Sadly, tensions in the camp saw Italy struggle in the tournament, and afterwards many of the players, including Wilson, would not play for the national side again. His international career finished with just the three caps. Even so, he continued dominating the back line for Lazio, staying in the capital for another five years and becoming I Biancocelesti’s all-time appearance maker, a record that stood for a quarter of a century until Giuseppe Favalli overtook him.

Wilson finished his career in North America, turning out for New York Cosmos and Inter Montreal, before retiring back to Naples with his family. He never returned to Darlington after leaving as a baby but did play against Newcastle and Sunderland while he was at Lazio, “so I have been near”, he said. “I like to remember Darlington first of all for my father”. And who can argue with that?
