THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of March Town United who are the visitors to the Sett for todays Emirates FA Cup tie.

Today’s match, which comes hot on the heels of Tuesday’s opening league game against Rothwell Corinthians, represents an opportunity for us to build on our success in the league and take the first step on the road to Wembley!

Looking back at Tuesday’s game I was delighted that we managed to open our account with 3 points from our opening league fixture, this will be a tough division so every point counts!

Considering that we have moved up the ladder to Step 5 and given that the season is in its infancy the points are what matters and having surrendered a two-goal lead in the first half I was delighted by the reaction of the players as two quick goals at the start of the second half knocked the stuffing out of Rothwell Corinthians and at 4-2 our management of the game ensured that we ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Onto today’s game and despite their current league position we are in for a tough game against a good team who just like ourselves have had two successful yet disrupted seasons, with promotion to Step 5 a reward for their efforts.

Anyway, enjoy today’s game, lets hope that its our name that is in the hat at full-time! I hope to see you back at the Sett when we take another step into the unknown with Leicester Road the visitors on Tuesday 24th August.

Following a successful, yet disrupted period, most of the playing squad remained in place however the game saw debuts for new signings Josh Whaler, Joe Lewington, Levi Freeman and Greg Ling with fellow new signings George Barnell and Ash Ogden taking their places on the bench.

The game itself started at a frantic pace as the decent sized crowd were treated to an end-to-end encounter.

With both defences looking a little shaky during the opening exchanges it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken.

A great ball released marauding full-back Dan Field on the left-hand side, his low driven shot forced a strong save from the visiting keeper who conceded a corner in the process. It was from that corner the breakthrough came as despite pleas for a hand-ball the ball fell to Dan Quigley who hooked it into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0 to the Badgers!

Minutes later Corinthians should have been level as having survived an almighty scare at one end they broke away only to see the chance go begging as the eventual shot was directed straight at Rohan who saved easily.

Soon after the lead was doubled when Levi Freeman broke through and scored into an unguarded net. With less than 20 minutes of the new season played, the Badgers were 2-0 up!

Seven minutes later the two-goal cushion was restored, and it was that man Freeman who stroked home a loose clearance into the net for his second of the game.

Credit to Rothwell who remained threatening throughout and with the half hour approaching they reduced the arrears as Zac Allen drilled home from just inside the box following a poor clearance.

The goals seemed to knock the stuffing out of Rothwell, as having recovered from a two-goal deficit in the first half it proved too big an ask to do it again.

Within minutes it was all square as that man Allen scored again, this time directly from a free-kick following the soft award of a foul against Lewington, his low effort beating Rohan, who crashed into the base of the post attempting to make the save.

HALF TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS: 2 ROTHWELL CORINTHIANS: 2 Having squandered a two goal lead it was now about character and just like the first half it was two quickfire goals that gave the Badgers another cushion and ultimately secured the three points.

On 60 minutes the lead was restored as the returning Dan Porter battled for a bouncing ball and with the visitors appealing for a foul the ball dropped to Greg Ling who calmly stroked the ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper and into the net via the inside of the far post.

Part of the reason for this is that in stark contrast to the first period the Badgers controlled territory and possession far better and with it came closest to scoring most notably through substitute Burrows who sliced horribly wide when through on goal; as it was it didn’t matter, with the Badgers running out comfortable winners. #SweetCaroline FULL TIME BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS: 4 ROTHWELL CORINTHIANS: 2

TODAY’S VISITORS MARCH TOWN UNITED Today’s visitors March Town United started out as March Town and played on several grounds in the early 1880’s before sharing a ground with March Town Cricket Club at The Avenue. March Town played there until after the war.

As founder members of the Isle of Ely Football League, March played in that League until joining the Peterborough & District League.

After the war they added `United’ to the Clubs’ title, reflecting the move to the GER sports ground in Robingoodfellows Lane.

After an unsuccessful spell in the United Counties League, March appointed ex- Norwich City and Notts County player, Oscar Hold as Manager and after two seasons won the UCL Championship.

In the 1955-56 season, March joined the Eastern Counties League and finished runners-up to Peterborough United Reserves. They finished runners-up to Spurs `A’ in the 1960-61 season but had to wait until the 1987-88 season to lift the Championship.

March have won the League Cup once, beating Spurs 3-2 in a two-leg final, with the second leg being played at White Hart Lane.

The Hares have reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup twice, going out to Brentford 4-0 in the 1956-57 season and more recently losing 2-0 at Swindon in the 1977-78 season. They have jointly held the East Anglian cup with Barking in 1953-54.

March Town now runs three senior sides and a Ladies Team. The First team play in the Thurlow Nunn (Eastern) Division One North, whilst the Reserves, A Team and ladies teams play in the Cambridgeshire Leagues March Town also has a thriving Youth set up, with the Under 18’s playing in the Thurlow Nunn League.

MANAGEMENT TEAM Arran Duke (Manager) Arran came to MTUFC in 2019 after a 10-year spent managing near neighbours Wisbech St Mary FC and joined us as assistant manager. Arran has now made the step up to become manager and is relishing the task ahead and the whole club is well and truly behind him after the club’s promotion to the Thurlow Nunn Premership.

Mark Warren (Assistant Manager) This is Marks 2nd full season as assistant manager after coming to the club as Under 18s manager.

Mark is a former professional football player at Leyton Orient so brings lots of experience with him. His relationship with Arran is second to none so was the ideal man to team up with Arran.

Guy Habbin (Coach) This is Guys First season at MTUFC after leaving the manager’s position at Haverhill Rovers FC because of the League restructure. Guy has a wealth of experience at step 6 level and is relishing the challenges that come with being part of the management team in a step 5 team.

Kai Brownhill (Coach) This is Kai’s first season at MTUFC having joined us from Rippingale FC in the PDFL where he was helping out. Kai has previously been part of the management team at Oakham FC, Huntingdon Town FC, Glinton FC, Borne Town FC, Sleaford Town and Boston United FC.

Chris Benton (GK Coach) This is Chris’s first season with the hares having accepted Arran Dukes offer to join the us. Chris’s previous jobs include Assistant Manager at Welwyn Garden City FC, Goalkeeper coach at Kings Langley FC and Hayes & Yeading FC and being a youth goalkeeper coach at LA Galaxy FC.

Kelly Rayner (Physio) Kelly has been the MTUFC Physio for the past 2 seasons. She has diplomas in physiotherapy, sports massage, sports injury and FA accredited first aid.

TODAYS OPPOSITION Simon Dalton (GK) This is Simons second spell in goal at MTUFC after playing his football at Blackstones FC last year.

Simon was first at March in the 2018/19 season.

Charlie Pocklington (GK) Charlie has been at MTUFC for many years coming through the under 18s, reserves and has now been involved with the 1st team set up for the past few years.

Josh Burrows (RB)

The right back who joined us from near neighbours Wisbech St Mary last season. Josh is a young footballer who has a bright future in football ahead of him.

Jack Saunders (LB)

Joining us from near neighbours Chatteris Town FC. Jack is a brilliant player and gets right into the game and will help his team mates out in whatever way he can.

Drew Baker (FB) Drew is another that joined the hares from Wisbech St Mary & another who started slow but has really stepped-up last season. He is a very good player that has added a lot to our defence.

Max Mattless (CB) Max is the club captain and has played for the club for many years. He has been through the good and the bad times at the club but always stays loyal to MTUFC.

Dean Miller (CB)

Dean joins the hares from Swaffham Town FC. He is an experienced central defender with lots of knowledge of Step 5 and will be a key member to Arrans Squad.

Kyle Liddy (LB)

After a really good season with the A-Team last year Kyle has been with the 1st team throughout pre-season and has been smashing it. He is relishing the opportunity of being with the 1 st team and continue his progression.

Sam Garner (RB)

Sam played for Swaffham Town FC for 2 seasons before fracturing his ankle in October last year.

After a long recovery Sam hopes to continue where he left off but this time it’s with the Hares.

Jamie Short (CB)

Jamie’s a young full back with great attacking skills and can read the game very well. He is another player that has previously played higher before joining the hares.

Danny Emmington (CB/MF)

Danny has return to the club after a brief spell at lower league club Parson Drove. Danny can play anywhere on the pitch and is a great leader when called upon.

George Rayner (CM)

This is George’s first season at MTUFC after having 2 successful seasons at Witchford 96 FC after coming through Ely City’s youth set up. George is relishing the opportunity of making the move to step 5.

Harri Clark (CM) A young 18-year-old who was playing his football at St Neots under 18s last year. Harri feels the time is right to progress into men’s football. Hes sure to make a big impact!

Stef Cavozzi (MF) After winning reserves player of the year award in 2019, Stef has been a key name on the reserves team sheet and has showed manager Arran Duke he has real potential to make the switch to the 1 st team.

Jack Rawson (CM) This is Jacks second spell at the club after leaving the Hares last season to join Downham Market FC. He has now returned and hopes to continue were he left off and continue being a real fans favourite.

Lewis Gibson (MF) Lewis came to MTUFC at the back-end of 18/19 season. Good tricky winger and a great reader of the game. He is also a great crosser of the ball and has a decent ping on him as well.

Brody Warren (AM)

Brody was last year’s young player of the season having played for the under 18s as well as the 1 st team on many occasions.

Jack Frohawk (CF)

Jack is new to the club this year having spent many years at Downham Market. He found the net 19 times in 27 appearances for the market town.

Craig Gillies (CF) Great centre forward who has previously played higher. Craig is capable of scoring goals from anywhere on the pitch. He scored 29 goals last season and is hoping to surpass that this season.

Jack Friend (CF) This will be Jacks 3rd season at the club. The guy scores goals for fun. He scored 35 goals last season and was the Thurlow Nunn’s top goal scorer. Whenever jack plays, he always works his socks off.

AROUND THE UCL Premier Division South

There were a whopping 49 goals in just 9 games on the opening night in the Premier Division South.

Eight of those came at Eynesbury where the home side recorded a 7-1 win over Peterborough Northern Star.

It was the same score line at Biggleswade however it was the visitors Godmancheter Rovers who scored seven and returned home with the points.

Another resounding win came at Newport Pagnell where the home team ran out 5-0 winners over ON Chenecks whilst there were also wins for Cogenhoe United, Harborough Town, Leicester Road, Potton United and Coventry United whilst the game between Rugby Town and Lutterworth Town ended in a draw.

Premier Division North It was Boston Town who stole the headlines in the North Division recovering from a two-goal deficit against Deeping Rangers to take the points, running out 4-2 winners.

Elsewhere long-time rivals Melton Town recorded a fantastic opening day success, winning 2-1 on the road against Loughborough Students with that man Zak Munton on the score sheet.

There were also opening day wins for Heather St. Johns, Long Eaton, Newark, Skegness Town, Heanor Town, Anstey Nomads whilst the game between Pinchbeck and Sleaford ended in a draw.

All of which means that Long Eaton are the leaders after round one of fixtures.

“I fell in love with football as I was later to fall in love with women: suddenly, inexplicably, uncritically, giving no thought to the pain or disruption it would bring with it.” Nick Hornby, Fever Pitch The FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in the world. This year, it turns a grand 150 years old. In the same year as the first ever FA Cup match, Germany was created, there was a Napoleon in captivity having been removed as leader of France, Queen Victoria opened the Royal Albert Hall, and the President of the United States was Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant. The FA Cup has survived from that alien, ancient time, to provide us with something that few other competitions in the world can provide. As unlikely as it may seem, it is still theoretically possible, a century and a half later, for a team that starts in the earliest rounds – the first weekend of August, before the elite clubs have even remembered that the competition exists – to go all the way and win the competition. That’s something worth celebrating.

Only fifteen teams entered the original competition (this season there are 736), and it was won by Wanderers in front of just 2,000 fans at The Oval. They saw Morton Betts score the first FA Cup final goal, a tap in. But Jarvis Kenrick of Clapham Rovers holds the distinction of the first ever FA Cup goal, for Clapham Rovers as they beat Upton Park on 11th November, 1871. Notts County’s Harry Cursham is the FA Cup’s all time top scorer, with 49 goals between 1877 and 1891. Wimbledon’s Doc Dowden scored the most goals in a single year – 19, in 1929/30 – and Ted McDougall’s 9 for Bournemouth against Boscombe Athletic, in 1971, is the most in a single game. Much more recently Ashley Cole has won the competition more than anyone, 8 times.

The competition spans all ages too. The 1924 final saw a 41-year-old Billy Hampson play for Newcastle United, a record that stands almost a century later, while Curtis Weston was the youngest when he played for Millwall in 2004. Only last year Bristol Manor Farm’s Evander Grubb became the cup’s youngest goal scorer, at a smidgen over 16. And while you might think it has become a global entity only recently, the first non-British player to win the Cup was American Julian Sturgess, in 1873. Canadian Edward Haggarty was the first non-Brit to captain a side to FA Cup Glory, Old Carthusians in 1881 (not Eric Cantona in 1996, as some have claimed). It did take a little longer for a foreign manager to win, however, and that distinction goes to Ruud Gullit, in 1997, with Chelsea.

Surprisingly, the team with the most FA Cup goals isn’t Arsenal, the most successful team (14 wins) or the team that has lost the most finals (Everton, 8). Or Man Utd or Liverpool or anyone in the Premier League. It is little old Kettering Town, with 893.

Spurs are just behind with 892.

But really, it’s the giant-killings that stand out in the FA Cup. Whether its Ronnie Radford’s goal for Hereford that gets played as soon as the 3rd Round is drawn, Colchester beating title-challengers Leeds in 1971, or Sutton beating holders Coventry in 1989. Perhaps the earliest giant-killing was way back in 1907, when non-league Crystal Palace travelled to Newcastle United, second in the First Division at the time, and unbeaten at home, and won. In 1949 Sunderland, nicknamed The Bank of England for how much money they had spent assembling their squad, were drawn away at Yeovil, at that time deep in non-league. Level at 90 minutes, the match went to extra time as a dense bank of fog settled over Huish (before they moved to Huish Park), and a mishit pass let Yeovil’s Eric Bryant hit the winner. Surely the greatest upset of them all.

And so, to 2021-22. As we begin, hopefully, to emerge from our pandemic, the Cup has survived its second (after the 1919 Spanish ‘Flu, when it was already half a century old). It is a reminder of what is special about football, and what is special about this competition. Who will be this season’s Jarvis Kenrick? Who will be this season’s Morton Betts, come to that? Will we see another Ted McDougall, another Ronnie Radford, another Yeovil? And who will win it in May? The last team to win from outside the topflight was West Ham, in 1980. The last non-league team to win was Tottenham in 1901. The magic of this competition is that, for all the time that has passed, for all the money that is spent, those things can happen again. And it’s the 150th anniversary, so why not this year?
