Over the past 30 years, Buffalo Prep has grown from serving ten students in our inaugural year to more than 650 students and alumni annually, furthering our vision to create equal opportunities and access for students, in a community that nurtures their individual talents and goals.

The organization recently completed a study exploring the program’s impact on our students. The data collection was led

by Alumni Prep Coordinator, Maya Meredith, HSP Class of 2007, and Mandy Seccia, a PhD student in the University at Buffalo’s Department of Learning and Instruction in the Graduate School of Education. Meredith and Seccia worked under the direction of board member, Dr. Shelley Kimelberg, director of the Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Program at UB. The research focused on the 2010-2015 graduates from Buffalo Prep’s High School Prep program.

While you can find a summary of key findings on page 29 of this report, we would like to highlight one notable statistic of which we are especially proud: 65% of alumni from the High School Prep classes of 2010-2015 have completed their bachelor’s degree. This figure compares with the 60% rate of higher income students nationally who graduate with a bachelor’s degree and far exceeds the 16% rate for low-income students nationally. Furthermore, an additional 11% of the Prep alumni currently are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs, which means that three-quarters (76%) of our recent High School Prep graduates either already possess a bachelor’s degree or are on track to do so soon.

The data demonstrates that the investments our partners and supporters make in Buffalo Prep make a significant impact in individual lives and across our community. We will continue to expand this research in the coming years, including a parallel qualitative study that seeks to understand our students’ experiences in Buffalo Prep and throughout their academic careers.

In response to the critical need in our community for supplemental academic enrichment that challenges students and prepares them for high school and college/vocational completion, we are thrilled to announce Prep Scholars Academy, a community-based summer program designed to strengthen academic skills in the crucial middle school years and to set students up for success in public high schools and higher education. The new program is an extension of our current efforts and serves to support students who may experience barriers to participation in our traditional programs.

Prep Scholars Academy will begin the summer after fifth grade and will help students transition into public high schools, with an emphasis on academic preparation and student and family engagement. Throughout the high school years, students and families will be served through Buffalo Prep’s College Prep program, which provides academic tutoring, social and emotional support, and college advisement.

Buffalo Prep’s inaugural Prep Scholars Academy will take place at The Belle Center in partnership with the Buffalo Public Schools and will offer bilingual instruction, with admission preference given to Hispanic/Latino students.

Our commitment to being a leading force in closing the access and opportunity gap for all students is stronger than ever.

Prep for Tomorrow Capital Campaign To further their commitment to a long-term partnership, the University at Buffalo is making it possible for Buffalo Prep to relocate to Allen Hall on its South Campus. UB is providing $2.8 million of the cost associated with the Allen Hall building repair and redesign for Prep and other university purposes.

Buffalo Prep pledged to raise its portion of the agreement for this exciting and necessary opportunity through the Prep For Tomorrow capital campaign. In phase I, with co-chairs Jock and Betsy Mitchell, present and past board members, and campaign members from the community committed to raise the funds needed to complete construction and to outfit and furnish the classrooms and offices.

To date we have garnered close to $1.7 million in capital pledges to complete Phase I, indicating our community’s endorsement of, and dedication to, our mission. Officially launching Phase II of our Prep for Tomorrow capital campaign, “Empowering New Space,” is another exciting part of our evolution.

We now are fundraising for outfitting our state-of-the-art home, which is being currently renovated and brought up to code. Active learning spaces to mirror our curriculum, innovative technology infrastructure, and enhanced security systems will be the foundation of this education hub. To date we have garnered over $600,000 in Phase II. Construction, compliance upgrades, and core spatial planning have begun. Local firm, Kideney Architects has been awarded the building’s design work.

Curriculum & Assessment In 2017, Buffalo Prep adopted a student-centered strategic plan to go even deeper with the services we provide for our deserving young students, utilizing researched-based best practices that include a culturally relevant and sustaining teaching and learning model that celebrates every student’s inherent gifts and experiences. Buffalo Prep retained Dr. Jevon Hunter, Woods Beal Endowed Chair at Buffalo State College, to train our faculty on innovative teaching methods, motivating teachers to affirm students’ cultural, racial, and ethnic literacies, and evaluating their own cultural positions and knowledge to determine how they can best impact student achievement. Culturally relevant and sustaining curricula seek to encourage and incorporate a breadth of heritages, languages, practices, and literacies in the classroom so that students see themselves in the material and are empowered.

Buffalo Prep’s new curriculum was launched in our Middle School Prep and High School Prep summer 2018 sessions. The curriculum is structured around three core pillars: academic excellence, cultural competence, and critical consciousness. This asset-based pedagogy and curriculum enhancements aim to better support the cultural diversity of Buffalo Prep students as well as provide increased access to resources and experiential learning, imparting a positive impact on not only our participating students and their families but also the larger Buffalo community as a whole.

Our Culturally Relevant-Sustaining Philosophy Mediocrity is unacceptable. (Academic Excellence) We believe in the inherent excellence of all members of our community. It is our job to collectively challenge each other to always strive to be our best and most authentic selves.  Our students have super powers. (Cultural Competence) We believe that our students have incredible resilience, resourcefulness, and a vast amount of community cultural wealth. Provided with access and opportunities for an equitable education they have the power to do anything they put their minds to.  We can make a positive impact in our community and in our world. (Critical Consciousness) We believe that each one of us has the capability to be a leader for positive growth and change in our community. As an organization, all of our members pride ourselves on sustainable civic action.

Restructuring Assessments As Buffalo Prep continues to shift our program to a more comprehensive model designed to empower our students and engage them as democratic citizens, an integral aspect of the transformation is exploring how we measure the impact of our program and how we define “success” for our students.

Who is the ideal Buffalo Prep scholar? Are we truly empowering our students? Is our program effective in building not only academic skills but also social-emotional skills so that students are best equipped to succeed in college and life?

Buffalo Prep will be collaborating with Via Evaluation over this academic year to define our goals as they align with our curriculum and our assessment process so that we can better answer these questions and ensure that we are preparing our students for their futures.

Middle School Prep Year Round

The students who successfully completed the Middle School Prep summer 2018 program and were entering seventh grade had the opportunity to apply to participate in the Middle School Prep Year Round program (MSP-YR), a 26-week academic enrichment program that took place on Saturdays during the school year.

Middle School Prep Year Round

The 2018-2019 Middle School Prep Year Round program expanded on the (2018) summer program’s essential question: “How can I make a positive impact on my community as a pre-teen?” The essential question/objectives for MSP-YR were as follows: ELA-Reading Comprehension/ Writing and Technology: How can I as a pre-teen have a positive impact on my community? ELA and research/technology collaborated in order to bridge history to current events. Students used the knowledge gained from research, reflection, and the study of current events to create a Buffalo Prep literary magazine. The magazine focused on their voices, identities, and perspectives.

Mathematics: Students learned about integers and operations as well as geometry as it relates to pre-algebra.

Science: How can I be a healthy pre-teen and help members in my community take charge of a healthy lifestyle? Students explored how immunity (or lack thereof) affects transmission of illness and disease in a community.

MSP-YR incorporated Classroom Circles, a foundation of Restorative Practices, in the form of “Lunch Bunch” to serve as a tool to build community and support among the students in the cohort. MSP-YR partnered with Dina Thompson and the students of UB’s School of Social Work to facilitate “Lunch Bunch” on a weekly basis. The students were divided into three small groups, and a staff member was assigned to each group.

MSP-YR also partnered with Medaille College’s Department of Education. The students in Medaille’s education program observed and assisted the MSP-YR teachers during small group interactive instruction.

Middle School Prep (MSP) is a component of Buffalo Prep which offers an enriching academic, cultural and social summer program experience for qualified students who have completed grades five and six in the previous academic year. The program helps prepare students to excel in school while exposing them to other components of the Buffalo Prep organization.

Aligned with the culturally relevant and sustaining Pedagogy, Middle School Prep’s theme was “My Differences Matter”. The essential question was “How can I use my differences to positively impact my community, country, and world?”

Science: Students confronted the essential question: “How does genetic variation make us unique?”

Students were exposed to the NYS Living Environment Curriculum and explored Biology, understanding DNA, genetics, and scientific experiments.

Technology/Research: The Research class worked in conjunction with science. Students researched different aspects of genetics which gave them the necessary background information for the work they did in their science class.

English/Language Arts: Students explored different types of writing such as poetry, narrative, articles, and songs, both as author and audience to develop their author’s voice. Students used their unique gifts, talents, and interests to address issues that matter to them through writing.

Mathematics: Students actively engaged with numbers by focusing on conceptual understanding, computational and procedural skills, and problem solving. The sixth and seventh grade standards require students to simplify expressions by combining like terms, solving one and two-step equations and inequalities, and solving word problems involving real world situations. Students also completed multiplication sprints to help them become more fluent.

High School Prep

High School Prep (HSP) is structured as a 14-month intensive program beginning with the summer before eighth grade and concluding at the end of the summer after eighth grade. Classes include math, chemistry, biology, earth science, media studies, history, and English Language Arts (ELA) with academic study skills integrated into classroom instruction. HSP utilizes culturally relevant and sustaining curricula and pedagogy that seek to encourage democratic citizenry through honoring and acknowledging the identities and strengths of all students. Additionally, all classes are student -centered and feature problem/project based learning.

English Language Arts: Students did many close readings of culturally relevant works such as Monster, On the Come Up, and 145th Street. In addition, students studied the Serial podcast and completed projects such as brochures and digital book trailers.

History: Students studied the New York State Regents Global 1 and Global 2 history curriculum.

Instead of simply studying the basic historical information, students were challenged to connect ancient history to their lived experience in Western New York. Students participated in gallery walks and presented research several times throughout the year.

Math: Students did algebra and geometry based projects such as civic planning (the math behind building and playground planning), and brainstormed how geometry functions in the design of Buffalo Prep’s future home at Allen Hall.

Media Studies: Students learned to become critical consumers of media: how to search for biases in news reports, how to express one’s identity through art, and how multiple forms of media can provide a lens through which to see everyday life.

Science: Students were exposed to concepts in biology, earth science, and chemistry. In addition to New York State standards in each science, in biology students focused on mental health awareness; in earth science, students examined the effects of rocks and minerals on the development of Western New York; and in chemistry, students researched the presence and effects of lead based paint in their own neighborhoods and homes.

Prep Excel: This class takes place on Wednesdays during the academic year. It is a component of HSP that provides extra academic and or social-emotional support to students. Students are mandated to attend based on grades, work habits, and other academic skills.

High School Selection Each year in the fall High School Prep staff turn their attention to the high school selection process for the HSP students. The goals of the high school selection process are twofold:

 to help students and families choose a broad range of high schools (public, charter, Catholic and independent) to visit and apply to, with the goal of ensuring that each student finds a school that is the right fit; and  to closely monitor the application and financial aid process, providing support and guidance as needed.

The high school selection process begins with Buffalo Prep’s annual high school fair during which students and families have the opportunity to meet with representatives from our partner schools.

The math and ELA curricula from September through November focus on preparation for the Catholic School Placement Test (CSPT). Additionally, staff obtain materials to help students prepare for the independent school exams. All students are required to take both the CSPT and the entrance exam for City Honors/Olmsted.

Partner Schools Buffalo Prep partners with 19 private, public, and charter high schools that offer nearly $500,000 in financial aid to our students each year. Buffalo Prep, in turn, provides these schools with the opportunity to embrace a more diverse student body, which helps all students, families, and staff members forge relationships that transcend racial, ethnic, and economic boundaries. This helps to prepare all students for colleges and workplaces that are becoming more representative of the greater diverse community.

College Prep College Prep College Prep provides academic support, college advisement, enrichment opportunities, and social-emotional counseling throughout high school as students transition into higher education. In addition to nurturing academic success, college readiness, and career awareness, College Prep also encourages students and their families to think strategically about the college admissions process by helping students assess their skills and accomplishments and establish goals aligned with their college and career aspirations.

To participate in the College Prep program students must:

 Complete the High School Prep program or  receive a John R. Oishei Scholarship or  receive a Cullen Foundation Scholarship or  be enrolled in a Buffalo Prep partner high school and be identified as eligible for the Rising to Distinction (RTD) program which provides economically disadvantaged high school students and their families with a wide array of support and opportunities through College Prep programming.

Tutorial Support The College Prep Tutorial Center is open Monday through Thursday (3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and Saturday by appointment. During the 2018-2019 academic year, 18 College Prep tutors conducted 3,869 tutorial sessions. Students received assistance in a variety of subjects including:

Angel Fund The Buffalo Prep Angel Fund was established to assist students and their families with covering the cost of education and enrichment related expenses which are not covered by tuition and school fees. Students can apply for a maximum of $200 per academic year to help pay for expenses that will help them participate more actively in the social life of their schools and access other opportunities. The Angel Fund Committee, which is comprised of community volunteers and College Prep parents, reviews the student applications, including written statements on a monthly basis. SAT Prep Class Buffalo Prep offered an eight week SAT Prep course for juniors that ran from January through March, with an optional one-hour study hall that followed each class. Juniors were given priority; however, as space became available, sophomores were able to register for the course.

After exploring various SAT preparation companies, Buffalo Prep hired Kazi Mahmud to run the in-house SAT prep course. Kazi worked at Khan Tutorial as an SAT instructor before becoming interim manager and is also employed as a math and science tutor at Buffalo Prep.

Prep Chat Prep Chat, the College Prep mentoring program, recommenced in fall of 2018 with returning mentors Leiah Renford ’07, and Kenneth Vargas, a coordinator and counselor at Buffalo State’s Upward Bound program and the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York’s Program Facilitator.

The Prep Chat curriculum was shaped using student feedback as well as strategic plan imperatives related to the development of a well-rounded student who can self advocate and navigate mature or difficult situations. Partnership with Child and Family Services Child and Family Services received state approval and licensing needed to implement a counseling clinic at Buffalo Prep. The clinic, which began in September 2018, takes place on Wednesday evenings during the academic year and is available to any Prep student or family member as needed.

Mentor Me Program The Buffalo Prep Mentor Me Program was started in 2016 to create and support relationships between working professionals and Buffalo Prep students during their senior year of high school through their first semester of college. Buffalo Prep staff recruits and screens a dedicated group of professionals who donate their time and resources to contribute to our students’ success. Mentors share professional and life experiences to guide students during this critical time in their lives and help them maximize their full educational and professional potential.

Our vision is that students will leave the Mentor Me program more confident and better equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate life challenges and to succeed beyond their academic careers.

College Prep Senior College Trips

Overnight College Experience In October, Buffalo Prep seniors toured the University at Buffalo Honors College, SUNY Cortland, Syracuse University, Keuka College, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges during a three day senior college trip. Each campus visit included an admission information session and campus tour. Students enjoyed the full student experience including dining on campus and shopping at the college bookstore.

Each college provided our seniors with unique and diverse experiences that helped to better inform their decision about what to look for in a college.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair Students expressed a strong interest in exploring historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In November 2018, College Prep students, parents and staff took part in the HBCU Destination College Fair experience for the first time. The Destination HBCU College Fair is held annually in Cleveland, Ohio, is open to schools and community-based organizations from across the country, and offers an HBCU campus visit experience.

Alumni Prep Alumni Prep

Alumni Prep supports Buffalo Prep graduates through post-secondary education and career placement providing services including career exploration and development, internships, leadership and enrichment workshops, scholarship assistance, networking, and mentoring. Prep alumni also have the opportunity to stay connected with each other and to be active in the Prep community, including serving on the Buffalo Prep Board of Directors, volunteering as mentors in the Buffalo Prep Mentor Me Program, and providing guidance and opportunities to the next generation of alumni.

Internship and Career Assistance: Alumni Prep offers varied experiences at the internship and career level by providing awareness, networking, career workshops and exclusive exposure to local opportunities through our corporate community and partners. It is also a resource to familiarize the Buffalo Prep scholars with different alumni networks as a way to provide connections and resources for their next steps.

Scholarship Assistance: Working in conjunction with College Prep, Alumni Prep provides access to scholarships that represent the needs of our alumni.

Networking Opportunities: Alumni Prep understands that great opportunity comes from a great network of people! We give our scholars opportunities to meet with board members, trusted representatives from our corporate community, and participate in career driven workshops.

Social-Emotional Support and Assistance: Alumni Prep provides a safe space for our scholars to feel empowered in their journey, and provides assistance for their challenges. We offer social-emotional intervention along with resources to better understand and assist in helping our alumni.

Community Relations/Community Service: Alumni Prep offers chances for alumni to give back to their community. Alumni serve on the Prep Collective, a junior board of individuals serving as a new crucial affinity group which has fundraising, visibility in the community, and student support at its core. Alumni Prep offers alumni testimonial and facilitators for High School and College Prep events such as: Rising Senior Retreat, High School Readiness, One–Love Workshop, Prep Pathways, and much more.

Alumni Prep Events Alumni Reunion: Our biannual alumni reunions focus on sharing and networking. Reunions take place during work and college breaks in the summer and winter. The 2018 winter reunion, held at Misuta Chow’s, had a turnout of over 70 alumni. The summer reunion was held in conjunction with the Mentor Me Program Mentor Meet-up at Hydraulic Hearth.

Internship Day: Buffalo Prep had its first two-day internship workshop with six of our partner companies: National Fuel Gas, Northwest Bank, Crowley Webb, M&T Bank, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Hodgson Russ LLP. Each business gave a group of 25 undergraduate, and post-graduate alumni an exclusive look at many job opportunities and internships they had to offer.

Alumni spoke with more than 60 company leaders and representatives.

Alumni Spotlight Monica Manney is a 2010 graduate of Buffalo Prep. Following her time at Buffalo Prep, she attended the Nichols School and SUNY Fredonia. At Fredonia, she majored in journalism with minors in sociology and Applied Research in Civil Rights. Monica is the recipient of Fredonia’s highest academic honor, the Lanford Presidential Prize, presented to her at graduation.

While in school, Monica had the opportunity to intern with the Make-A Wish Foundation, Spectrum News Buffalo, WGRZ, Walt Disney World, Fredonia’s career development office and The Student Wellness Center. She also had the opportunity to attend the CBC-UNC fellowship in Raleigh, the North Carolina A&T fellowship in Charlotte, NBC University in Detroit, and the National Association of Black Journalists Conference Fellowship in Miami.

Following graduation, she traveled to Atlanta to intern at CNN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade.

Her greatest accomplishment is publishing an article that drew the attention of former Fredonia President Virginia Horvath. Their partnership created FredFlo, an initiative that works to provide sanitary products in women’s and all gender restrooms on campus. At the end of September, Monica will accept the Tim Russert media career award from the Buffalo Broadcaster’s Association.

The next step in her journey is working as a multimedia journalist in Syracuse.

Marquél Jeffries, a proud representative of the Buffalo Prep class of 2011, graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in 2015. After obtaining his high school diploma, he attended SUNY Oswego to pursue a bachelors degree in broadcasting/mass communications, which he received in May 2019. Of all the positions he held during his time at SUNY Oswego, the most impactful one was being the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the student government. This position allowed him to be a prominent voice for underrepresented students and to work with administrators on initiatives to promote a more welcoming community on campus and within the city of Oswego.

Since graduating college, Marquél has spent time traveling, enjoying quality time with loved ones, and working on music.

During the month of September, he began touring with Griselda Records, a Buffalo-bred rap group who recently signed a management deal with Roc Nation. Some of the cities on the tour include Miami, Atlanta, and Dallas. After the tour concludes, he plans on relocating to Nashville to put his degree to use while maintaining his music career. He advises “the rising kings and queens of Buffalo Prep: follow your heart, keep faith, and remain true to your morals. Never allow anyone to sway you away from the path that’s designated for you. It’ll all work out!”

Alumni Research Project

Buffalo Prep recently completed a study exploring the impact of the program on its students. The research focused on Buffalo Prep’s High School Prep 2010-2015 graduates who participated in the study. The data shows that 97% of the students entered college immediately after graduating high school. Nationally, only 67% of low-income students entered college immediately after high school.

Other key findings include:

65% of alumni from the High School Prep classes of 2010-2015 have completed their

bachelor’s degree. This figure compares to the 60% rate of higher income students nationally

who graduate with a bachelor’s degree, and far exceeds the 16% rate for low-income students

nationally.

An additional 11% of the alumni enrolled are currently in bachelor’s programs, which means

that three-quarters (76%) of our recent High School Prep graduates either already possess a bachelor’s degree or are on track to do so.

100% of Buffalo Prep students graduate from high school and are accepted to college.

The majority of students who participated in the study (76%) graduate from highly

selective or selective colleges.

Celebration of Achievement, May 2019 Buffalo Prep’s Annual Celebration of Achievement, presented by M&T Bank, took place Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Kleinhans Music Hall to honor Buffalo Prep’s largest class of graduating high school scholars as well as its steadfast and loyal supporters in the community. The event was chaired by Michael and Alex Montante and Luis ’97 and Jessica Rodriguez.

Over 500 guests were in attendance as each graduate announced where they would be attending college in the fall and their plans for the future. The Celebration of Achievement raised more than $260,000 from local corporations, foundations, individuals and partner schools and surpassed its night-of-event goal of raising $30,000, which was generously matched by Unifrax LLC. The honorees were M&T Bank and the Children’s Foundation of Erie County, and major sponsors included Presenting Sponsor M&T Bank, Match Sponsor Unifrax LLC, and Celebrating Achievement Sponsors Uniland Development Company and Norman and Thuy Murray. Ashley Rowe, Eyewitness News anchor, emceed the evening.
