20/20 Vision 2018-19 REPORT ON GIVING FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

20/20 Vision

Independent day & boarding school for college-bound girls

205 Bidwell Parkway Buffalo, NY 14222 // BuffaloSeminary.org

20/20 Vision Because Our Oldest Tradition is Forward Thinking Since 1851, SEM has designed a program that teaches girls to keep their heads up, ears open, and their eyes on the horizon. For the last 110 years or so, girls have quite literally crossed the same threshold, studied at the same library tables, played at least two of the same pianos, and been declared Hornet or Jacket team members. As the year 2020 dawns, this Report on Giving is a start at capturing what has endured and makes SEM recognizable to generations of women who love it so.

The SEM community encourages its students to prosper in whatever they choose to do, and this dedication is what makes Buffalo Seminary great. – Sophie Bates ’21

Helen with book award recipient Dagny Rebhan '21 on Class Day, 2019.

LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL It is with heartfelt gratitude and thanks that I share this Report on Giving with you. The report acknowledges everyone who helped us surpass our most ambitious fundraising goal ever and attempts to capture the impact of your contributions large and small, to students and faculty at Buffalo Seminary. Without the support of our parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, friends, families, foundations and nonprofits, we could not bring talented young women from around the world and across Western New York to live, study, play, and learn from one another; nor could we support the always iterating work of our caring and dedicated faculty. In 2018-19 our faculty devoted countless hours to a comprehensive review of our curriculum in all departments and began the process of mapping it to ensure SEM provides exceptional college-prep education and character development to our students. The year 2020 provides us with the opportunity to build a culture at SEM where inquiry and lifelong learning continue as the goal of the entire community. Learning to be flexible and creative thinkers is paramount. We embrace the changing times with optimism. It is not the SEM way to be deterred.

Since we were founded, SEM women have moved thoughtfully, creatively, and hopefully into the future, confident that their education here has prepared them for what comes next. All-girl education has never been more important. It is with clear-eyed 20/20 vision on the coming years that I assure you SEM will continue to graduate resourceful, resilient, community-minded, and of course, educated, young women ready to find their places in this complicated century. Thank you to each and every one of you. It is because of you that I have confidence and optimism about SEM’s future. I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season. With gratitude,

Helen L. Marlette

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALUMNAE GIVING The SEM Graduates Association donated the plot of land on Bidwell Parkway where SEM stands today. SEM alumnae raised funds to construct West-Chester Hall next to Buffalo Seminary. Beloved former Head of School L. Gertrude Angell, established a scholarship program for girls whose families could not afford a private education. She left a significant portion of her estate to SEM, maintaining her scholarship program for generations. SEM offers over 30 student scholarships and merit awards funded by donations. Alumnae gave nearly $400,000 to the Annual Fund in 2018-2019!

BUFFALO SEMINARY

Since we first opened our doors in 1851, financial contributions to SEM have always been vital to the continuing success of the school. The generous support of our alumnae, families, friends, faculty, staff, and trustees is one of SEM’s most important traditions – and a clear reflection of the value of a SEM education and commitment to girls' education. When you give to SEM, you can be sure your contribution will make a difference in the quality of each girl’s SEM experience. Each gift helps us maintain the excellence of our academic and extracurricular programs, as well as the breadth and depth of our school community. Each gift also helps sustain the school’s most beloved traditions, while supporting our ability to evolve in ways relevant and important to our mission.

Thank you for your generous support! 2018-19 REPORT ON GIVING

Guests and community members near and far accessed a lively, on-line silent auction, bidding on over 90 fabulous items and packages. // In addition to building community at SEM, SEMQuest also raises money to support key programs, including class trips and activities. Thanks to sponsors, guests, and bidders, SEMQuest raised $25,647! // Many thanks to SEMQuest committee co-chairs Kim Desjardins and Gary Lucinski, who led over 30 parent volunteers to make SEMQuest 2018 a smashing success.

SEMDAY

Our 6th annual SEMday celebration took place on May 1, 2019. This oneday fundraising campaign coincides with college decision day (the deadline for college choices and deposits) and the Class of 2019 wore their college sweatshirts with pride! Spurred on by photos, social media posts, and email updates throughout the day, the SEM community came together in record numbers. // Thanks to 132 donors and two special fundraising challenges, we raised $30,869.20! //

#GIVINGTUESDAY // November 29, 2018, SEM participated in our fourth annual #GivingTuesday, a 24-hour fundraising campaign. This global initiative occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to encourage philanthropy as an antidote to the shopping of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Many thanks to the 48 donors who supported SEM on #GivingTuesday, raising over $16,000 in 24 hours! //

ALUMNAE GIVING // One of the requirements to receive a SEM diploma is service to the greater community. While the requirement ends at graduation, the following alumnae continue to give generously in the same spirit that was so important then and still is today. Support from alumnae is a wonderful gesture of thanks and commitment to SEM’s mission. //

From left to right: Susan Gordon, Regina Gerstman, Sarah M. Fox, Jane Krueger Montgomery, Randy Cole (with cup), Cynthia Cole, Karen Ellentuck, Linda Bagley Grant, S. Marcy Baer. Right: Julianna (Glauser '05) Jordan and former Semachords Gigi (Pooley '76) Helliwell and Laura Munson '79 led the traditional singing of Jerusalem.

An anonymous alumna challenged her fellow reunion class alumnae to raise $50,000 for the Annual Fund by Reunion Weekend, offering a matching $50,000 for special projects at SEM. Reunion alumnae met the challenge, unlocking funds for a new Boston model Steinway & Sons grand piano, solarpowered scoreboard for Larkin Field, and virtual reality (VR) lab equipment for SEM’s state-of-the-art VR program. The students love these new additions to SEM! 2018-19 REPORT ON GIVING

Legacy Residential Scholarship Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding program in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. Scholarships are now available for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family for the 2019-20 school year. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school. To nominate a candidate, contact Director of Admission Laura Munson ‘79 at 716.885.6780 or email admission@buffaloseminary.org.

SEM EVERYONE EVERYWHERE 3b

From Buffalo to Buenos Aires, Ottawa, London, Paris, DC, Singapore, and Johannesburg, there are over 3300 SEM alumnae around the world... What do we share? SEM.

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

The Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association (BSAA) has transitioned to a national and international organization, providing networking and engagement opportunities for alumnae wherever they live.

Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association

In September 2017, the Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement (HCAE) was launched to guide the development of this initiative and support SEM’s Head of School.

The Buffalo Chapter wants you! We’re looking for local alumnae who wish to serve on the board of directors. The board facilitates many of the events you have probably attended such as the reunion dinner and the Holiday Bazaar. But we do much more and would love to have you join us!

The HCAE is focused on new initiatives in four key areas identified as most important: • Alumnae Communications • Events and Programming • National Platform for Networking and Resource Sharing • Establishing new chapters of the BSAA in regions beyond Western New York where there is both interest and prospective alumnae leadership

Contact Alumnae Relations Coordinator Julianna Glauser Jordan ’05 at jjordan@buffaloseminary.org or 716-885-6780 ext. 221 for more information.

For more information or to get involved, visit BuffaloSeminary.org/Alumnae Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement Members 2018-19 Margaret Brown '72 Betsy Bloom '08 Kilby Bronstein '10, Co-chair Lucy B Coburn '73, Co-chair Dahlia Fetouh '92 Bethany Grabiec Jacobs '94 Erin Sozanski Goubiere '03 Emily Insalaco '92 Kara Hornung Kerwin '98 Joanna Glauser Marymor '00 Erin O'Brien '86 Alicia Saia '86 Carrie Brown Wick '76

BUFFALO SEMINARY

THIS YEAR, GIVE TO WHAT YOU LOVE! We are thrilled to unveil our Give to What You Love Campaign for the 2019-20 Annual Fund!

Love the arts! SEM students are artists, actors, stage crew, photographers and musicians. Your gift to the arts will help us buy the rights to our fall and spring plays, purchase paint and canvases, and tune our pianos. Nurture creativity with a gift to the arts at SEM.

Love athletics! An appreciation of healthy competition and teamwork goes beyond the Hornet/Jacket rivalry. Did you know that 61% of SEM students compete on at least one school team? Your gift to athletics helps SEM maintain our equipment, gym, boats, squash courts, and Larkin Field, while funding memberships, registration fees and student travel to competitions.

Love student enrichment & technology!

Now, you can make a special gift to the area you care about most at SEM. Whether your daughter starred in a SEM theatre production, your granddaughter uses her SEM laptop to practice coding, or you were a Scholar-Athlete, everyone benefits from the Annual Fund. Give to what you love the most, or support our area of greatest need today!

SEM prepares our students for success in college and beyond with a 4-year computer science curriculum, virtual reality lab, and challenging, unique courses that begin freshman year. Your gift to student enrichment and technology supports every aspect of the academic environment and sets girls on a path to pursue STEM in college and career.

Love faculty enrichment and salaries! Our alumnae agree that SEM’s remarkable faculty had a profound impact on their ability to speak up and reason through challenges, while instilling a lifelong love of learning. Your gift to faculty enrichment and salaries will help SEM provide professional development opportunities and offer competitive compensation to attract and retain top-notch educators.

Love financial aid and scholarships! At SEM, we believe that all academically qualified girls should have the ability to consider this life-changing education to further their lifelong academic goals. Your gift to financial aid and scholarships helps make the dream of a SEM education possible for deserving girls.

Love the area of greatest need! SEM’s Annual Fund touches every corner of campus, and allows us to respond to our most pressing needs to offer the best possible education for our girls. When you give to our area of greatest need, you provide current use dollars that go to work immediately for our students. Show your love for SEM with an unrestricted gift!

In Memoriam & Obituaries Policy Our goal is to honor alumnae and friends who have passed away and to celebrate their contributions to the SEM community.

your help keeping abreast, please help us by notifying Julianna Jordan '05 at jjordan@buffaloseminary.org or development@buffaloseminary.org.

The passing of Gary Sutton has left holes in the fabric of our community, not the least of which is on our In Memoriam page. No longer having Gary's deep knowledge of SEM and the Western New York community makes the familial connections list that accompanies the name of the passed alumna daunting to the point of impossible. We do not want to offend so we are reformulating our In Memoriam acknowledgments.

In addition, we welcome any words of remembrance for the Class Notes section of our website at buffaloseminary.org/classnotes. Stories about alumnae who have passed away will be included in our periodic alumnae enewsletter and SEM Today magazine but not the Report on Giving. We welcome your suggestions for memorial profile stories for SEM Today and the alumnae enewsletter. Please contact Ashley Morlock amorlock@buffaloseminary.org or development@buffaloseminary.org with information.

It is SEM policy to note the deaths of SEM alumnae and friends in list form in SEM Today magazine and the Report on Giving each year and on the constantly updated website at buffaloseminary.org/inmemoriam. We appreciate

HONORING GARY SUTTON

What I remember most about Gary Sutton is that he listened. Carefully. With his full attention. He listened to offer advice. He listened to help. He listened to give comfort. -Lauren Belfer

It is so so sad. I really thought Gary would be at Sem forever. Actually, he will be in many ways. Lovingly, -Pam Henrich

What a tremendous loss. I’m really heartbroken. He meant so much to so many. -Amy Martoche

He certainly was a cornerstone in the building. -Deirdre McOwen

Gary was a gem of a human being. Words can’t begin to convey the gravity of such a loss.

Gary's memorial.

It will be hard to reconcile the idea of SEM without Mr. Sutton. While so much has changed since my days as a student, there have always been two things I could count on: Miss Angell keeping a stern watch over the library and Mr. Sutton ready to catch up on everything we had been up to since my last visit. Now they will keep watch together, one expecting ladylike behavior and the other waiting for shenanigans. Ever the champion of SEM, I believe To Alma Mater applies as much to him as it does to any of us.

Gary Sutton was beginning his 50th year at SEM when he passed away on September 23, 2019. Gary’s loyalty to and love of SEM were boundless. He touched an uncountable number of lives in the school community as a teacher of Latin and French, the class notes editor, a musician, and the irreplaceable SEM historian. His contribution to the standard of the written materials published by SEM is felt already.

Here on thy crowded stair And long, wide hallway, Where other feet shall pass, New voices call theeHere shall my spirit come And linger alway.

The 2012 dedication of the Magavern-Sutton Courtyard at SEM celebrated his legacy. Gary was renowned for his love of animals, especially dogs. He was often seen strolling in Elmwood Village with friends’ dogs and dog visitors at SEM were assured a Milk-Bone from Gary’s desk drawer. His affection for animals epitomized his spirit. At his memorial on November 12, the Chapel pews were filled with those whom he had meant much to. Helen Marlette, Harry Schooley, Ansie Silverman Baird '55, former head of school Marge Barney and current students Auguste '21 and Eva Maines ‘21 all spoke. Written tributes and memories have flooded into SEM from parents, alumnae, and former colleagues. The SEM Facebook page captured many and the Powerpoint we made for his memorial ceremony is there.

WHY SEM?

You can put a student in a SEM classroom who otherwise would not be able to attend. Your gift to SEM will have an immediate impact on a student's life. buffaloseminary.org/give

Jennifer D. Roberts '92 Trustee As I get older, I realize more and more how SEM profoundly impacted my life. While I began my freshman year of high school as a very insecure and unsure girl, I was filled with idealism and hope, which was nurtured in a way that could only be achieved at SEM. SEM embraced me into a community of unapologetically smart, talented and tenacious girls who then sent me on an upward bound trajectory to become my truest self. Throughout the years, I have continued to map my present day life experiences back to life skills and tools that I gained from my time at SEM. The SEM experience not only gives girls an education filled with academic rigor and scholarship, but it also fosters the development of young women who then can become the inspiration for the next generation of girls. I give to SEM because I want to be sure that SEM continues to provide this truly transformative experience for girls who may not otherwise be granted with this opportunity of a lifetime.

Susan Hammel Parent Chair My husband and I contribute to the Annual Fund, and I agreed to serve as the Parent Chair as we truly believe the education provided by SEM is without comparison. My daughters have matured and grown in countless ways due to the exceptional teachers, staff and administration at SEM, and are both discovering and pursuing their passions. The Annual Fund helps provide scholarships to students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to study in such a rigorous setting, and gives students access to new sports and activities. It also allows SEM to continue making improvements to the laptop program, and helps to keep our historic buildings beautiful. Every past, present and future student benefits from the money provided to the Annual Fund, and we are committed to helping SEM continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities to the young women of WNY, and to the international students who call WNY home during their high school years.
