Remarkable Opportunities Campaign For SEM Success Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM significantly surpassed its $8.5 million goal, with gift commitments of $9,121,637 as of closing, June 30.

The most ambitious fundraising campaign in our history, Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM is already transforming our campus and securing a strong future.

“Our Campaign Committee definitely rose to the $8.5 million challenge,” said Board and Campaign Chair Margaret Brown ‘72. “The outstanding support from SEM’s Board, our Advancement team, and gifts from 1480 donors drove the success and are a source of great pride.”

Campus Transformation Underway As a result of the extraordinary fundraising success, renovation of the Bidwell Parkway building is well underway, thanks to a generous and timely lead gift from Michal and Jim Wadsworth.

When school opens in September, the MagavernSutton Courtyard will welcome our students and faculty, with new common areas, gardens and pathways, linking our school building and the five student and faculty residences, to unify our Elmwood Village campus at last. A long overdue restoration of our beloved Chapel will also be completed this summer.

SEM is so grateful to Linda (Robertson ‘73) and Bill Magavern for their generous financial leadership and to Mary Magavern Worrell ’60 for her design vision and her commitment to creating a unique teaching and learning environment in our Elmwood Village campus.

Endowment Soars Campaign gifts now committed to SEM’s endowment will grow this critical resource to $10 million. Endowment growth is imperative to a strong, vital future for all educational institutions and essential to our desire to increase funding for student scholarships, faculty development funds, and programmatic priorities.

SEM now has 56 named endowment funds, including 18 new funds established during the Campaign.

Recognizing Jody’s transformational leadership At its June board meeting, SEM’s Trustees surprised Jody by dedicating the residence she has lived in, at 26 Soldier’s Place, as The Jody Douglass House, in recognition of her extraordinary impact on SEM. “During Jody’s tenure, SEM has made enormous strides in its mission to be an outstanding school with a national reputation. We are so very grateful for her many accomplishments, including the establishment of SEM’s residential program, achieving our unprecedented enrollment and inspiring our vibrant school community."

Helen Ladds Marlette - Championing Girls' Education SEM’s 14th head of school is not comfortable talking about herself - but she is effusive when it comes to talking about SEM. “We don’t have to be shy about what we’re good at – educating girls and understanding women, knowing what it takes for women to be fully realized, contributing members to our community and our world.”

In 1851 SEM was founded by a group of prescient citizens who believed their daughters deserved the same quality of schooling their sons enjoyed. Women would not get the vote until 1920. By then, a new century was born, Miss Angell had arrived, the school had moved into 205 Bidwell Parkway, and 68 classes of SEM women had graduated - educated, but disenfranchised citizens. Helen takes over a 21st century SEM, where the goal is more nuanced. Rather than providing an education as good as a boy’s, SEM provides an education that’s specifically designed for women. She asks,

“What will our girls need for the future?”

Helen was born on September 3, 1959. She is the middle child in a peripatetic family. Her father’s work brought the family to Buffalo where she began 7th grade at Elmwood Franklin after having lived and gone to school in very disparate places: Cleveland, Houston, and West Virginia. As an elementary student, Helen attended rural public school, coed school, and girls' school. She was in the first class of girls that entered The Nichols School as freshmen; she graduated from Nichols in 1977.

“We got to create the school we wanted for girls,” she said of the experience of being one of the pioneering girls and a standout athlete at Nichols. “We were trailblazers, teaching the teachers and the boys what girls needed from their school. We had a responsibility to speak out if things weren’t right for girls.”

Helen graduated from Middlebury College with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Russian Literature.

Why Russian Lit.? She liked Crime and Punishment.

“It’s why people do what they do,” she explained. Her first job was teaching history, coaching and as the admission assistant at Oldfields School, the venerable boarding school for girls in Glencoe, Maryland.

Married to Peter Marlette (center) at 23, she is now the mother of three grown children (left to right: Peter Jr., Liza '13, Grace), mother in-law (to Ryan Jorgensen (far right), and an aunt of 22. But Helen points out that it’s not only being a mother that informs her, it’s being a daughter. “We transition in life,” she said.

In 2007, then Head of School Sandra Gilmor hired Helen as athletic director and a history teacher. She grew up in the neighborhood, had played against SEM teams, her sister had attended SEM for a time. “I thought I knew SEM but I opened the door and realized I didn’t know a thing,” she said. “There is serious academic work going on here, and support. It is a warm community but that doesn’t negate the seriousness of its educational intent.”

She was bowled over by the quality education SEM offers young women. By 2010 she was dean of students and by 2013 she was vice president of external relations. In December 2015 she was chosen by a unanimous vote of the board of trustees to be head of school and became head of school on July 1. The process of her selection has given her confidence and she feels supported.

And she said with a laugh, “I’m just competitive enough to know I’m not going to let them down.”

Of all the changes she will steward, she optimistically anticipates the Magavern-Sutton Courtyard’s effect on the school’s inclusivity, opportunity for some quiet reflection and access to plain old fresh air. “Perhaps most exciting to me though is the opportunity to work with our faculty - extraordinary in its work ethic, compassion, intellect, and creativity. I have to find every way I can to support the work they do and that will keep us at the forefront of women’s education.”

It's Our Time How lucky I feel to be taking the helm at SEM at this point in the history of the school. I know my good fortune is the direct result of the hard work of all of those who have preceded me - work that was fueled by a love of SEM and girl focused education. It is my charge and my duty to carry their passion and work forward to ensure that each girl today receives the same exceptional educational opportunities as those who have preceded her, to ensure this school is worthy of each girl’s promise.

What does a SEM education look and feel like in 2016?

Our look has changed dramatically. The exterior of 205 Bidwell is being restored to preserve its glory. The Chapel has been refurbished to highlight its beauty and improve the functionality of the space. The MagavernSutton Courtyard, connecting our five student and faculty residential houses, is absolutely stunning. The buildings and spaces at SEM matter; they are the framework for the unique community that is SEM. As is tradition, we will begin each day in the Chapel because it is the Chapel which gives us a sense of place and meaning. It is the very center of our school. It builds our confidence, brings us joy and celebrates our individuality while strengthening our community. The courtyard connecting the buildings of our campus will allow for individual reflection, small group gatherings and a large green lawn for recreation and socializing bringing us together in ways we have yet to imagine.

Beautiful places and spaces ground the people at SEM, but it is the people at SEM who give the spaces and places life. The spirit of individual teachers who are passionate about their academic field, devoted to their students and each other, and who work together creatively combined with the energy of students who are kind, curious, engaged, and supportive of one another is unbeatable.

Although the faces change and our campus has grown, the essence of SEM has remained the same. When you walk in our hallways and walkways you will see students and faculty engaged with each other, hear laughter and feel the sense of belonging that is SEM: a school guided by our tradition, living in the present and cherishing our time together, all the while pushing the boundaries to prepare us for an exciting future.

The result? SEM is a nationally recognized all-girl school whose graduates are capable problem solvers, knowledgeable, resilient, kind, involved citizens who possess outstanding character. It is a privilege to be charged with leading this incomperable school where the tradition is forward thinking, into the future.

Helen officially became SEM’s 14th Head of School on July 1, 2016, though enthusiastic welcomes and congratulations to Helen started pouring in as soon as SEM’s Board announced its vote in December 2015.

“Helen’s appointment is both an acknowledgement of the contributions she has made in every aspect of school life and an affirmation of her great work during Jody’s tenure,” shared Margaret Brown ’72, SEM’s Board Chair. “SEM is indeed fortunate to have in Helen an exceptional educator, strong leader, and advocate for our faculty and our students who is deeply committed to our shared mission, values, and strategic priorities.”

Class of 2016 Commencement

Buffalo Seminary graduated 43 remarkable young women on a gorgeous afternoon at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, June 14.

Retiring Head of School, Jody Douglass, gave her last opening address and awarded diplomas with Board Chair Margaret Brown ‘72. Ms. Brown also presented the Captain John Brown Award for new faculty excellence to Chair of the Science Department, Joan Wienckowski.

Buffalo Seminary has held its commencement at Westminster Presbyterian Church for as long as anyone can remember. Uniquely, the entire student body attends graduation as it is integral to the ceremony.

Chair of the Fine Arts Department and theatre instructor, Susan Drozd, gave an epic faculty address with Glenda the Good Witch at its core; guest speaker Amanda Terkel (above), politics editor at The Huffington Post, exhorted SEM students to refuse to be dismissed merely because they are women.

Graduates of the Class of 2016 are the most adventurous in SEM’s history according to College Counselor Molly O'Connor Greene ‘98 - they applied to more schools, more places than any class before them.

Final choices made, internships complete, SEM students plan majors in a wide variety of fields from public service to business and medicine.

Into The Future

By Abigail Hopkins, SGA President 2015-16 I’ve had the most amazing year working for my SEM sisters. Getting to know you all, helping with SEM events, and seeing all of your faces every single morning inspired me. But as this school year draws to a close, and each of us steps into a new chapter of our lives, I want to leave each class with a quote.

To the Freshmen: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. It probably feels like yesterday that you were on this stage in weird costumes screaming out if you wanted to be a Hornet or a Jacket (we all know you want to be Hornets though). And trust me, before you know it, you will be sitting on this stage in white dresses, confused as to how four years could have passed by so quickly. SEM is such a special place, and while we all hit rough spots that feel like infinities, it’s vital to treasure each and every moment with the girls around you. Before you know it, you’ll be saying goodbye to them.

To the Sophomores: “Just keep swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.” Dory, Finding Nemo. You are half-

way through high school. Think about that for a moment. Two years down, two to go. Junior year is just around the corner, and yes, that may be a daunting truth, but you have all the tools you need to take it on. Just stay steady, organized, and consistent. Everything will fall into place. And of course, don’t forget to take time for yourself.

To the Juniors: “Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life, but it ain’t about how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. It’s how much you can take, and keep moving forward.”

Rocky Balboa, Rocky. The prospect of senior year and the infamous college process is exciting, but I remember the dread I felt this time last year. Yes, it’s going to be challenging. Yes, you’re going to think at some point, as every senior does, “I’m not going to college.” But in the end, all that matters will be the way you overcome your challenges. And I promise you: you will overcome your challenges. And you will go to college!

culminating to this point – graduating from high school. But really, graduating is just the beginning. Stepping out of the sheltering arms of SEM and into the real world is terrifying but exciting. Bizarre yet exhilarating. It will be weird to go from having 42 sisters to hang out with, and sometimes disagree with, to being surrounded by thousands of strangers in a new city. But because we’ve spent these four years together, we’ve learned how to take care of ourselves from each other – we’ve learned how to lead, how to follow, how to push ourselves, how to motivate others, and how to be a SEM woman. We may be going, but we’re going with SEM sisters as well as an entire school at our backs.

And now finally, to the Entire School: Here is one last quote to leave you with from Back to the Future Part 3: “Your future hasn’t been written yet.

No one’s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.”

To the Seniors: “We’re almost there and nowhere near it. All that matters is we’re going.” Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls. It feels like our lives have been

On June 3, student achievement and leadership in academics, athletics, and community was recognized with awards and prizes given by the faculty and coaches.

May 27, SEM held its 2nd STEAM Challenge Awards conceived of and hosted by Director of Technology Beth Adamczyk. Only freshmen are eligible to compete and 20 projects were submitted for consideration.

The National Honor Society inducted 28 juniors.

CLASS DAY On June 13, SGA President Abby Hopkins '16 presided over her last SEM meeting. The morning ceremony is dedicated to academic awards and the Rose Ceremony where leadership of clubs and school government is transferred from the outgoing seniors to the incoming seniors. The morning also serves an an opportunity for the seniors to be fĂŞted and to formally say good-bye.

CUM LAUDE SOCIETY HONORS Seniors Anna Fretz, Milan Gacioch, Maia Gallagher, Erin Melber and Sara Smolarek joined their SEM sister fall inductees TojumiOluwa Adegboyega, Abigail Hopkins, Anabel Cornacchio, and Kaitlin Hughes in SEM’s chapter of the national Cum Laude Society.

The Cum Laude Society is a national organization of over 300 chapters in both public and independent schools. Cum Laude membership is based solely on academic achievement. The requirements of Cum Laude permit schools to induct up to 20% of the senior class. SEM admitted nine seniors this school year.

This year, we are saying goodbye to our longtime colleague Glenna Leous (above) and wishing her a wonderful retirement after 12 years of service to SEM. We thank her for the difference she’s made in the girls’ lives at SEM and beyond as a science teacher, a class dean, an advisor, and a coach.

We are excited to welcome Samantha Basile who has the formidable task of filling Mrs. Leous’ shoes in science this upcoming school year. Samantha graduated from Canisius College in May 2016 where she earned her BA from the School of Education and Human Services in Adolescent Education with a concentration in Physics.

She is a passionate and dynamic professional who inspires a love for sciences in her students through inquiry and a hands-on approach.

SEM is equally thrilled to welcome Dr. Patrick Walter who has joined our English Department as a sophomore English instructor. Patrick earned his PhD from the University at Buffalo in 2012. At UB, Dr. Walter specialized in a number of areas including contemporary American and African diasporic literatures, composition and media studies. He is committed to making complex reading and writing processes approachable and engaging to students and is excited to start working with SEM girls in the fall.

We extend an equally warm welcome to Sarah Wooten (below, with Sophie), who is SEM’s first teaching fellow. Sarah received a dual BA in History and Women, Gender and Sexuality from the University of Virginia (UVA). In May 2016, she received her Master of Teaching also from UVA after completing her student teaching in United States History and Multicultural Education.

In addition to her social studies background, Sarah also has experience working with English language learners (ELLs) and received an additional certificate in English as a Second Language. At SEM, she will be assisting Sharon Ammerman to provide support to our ELLs, she will teach a section of history, and she will intern as a residential house director.

We are excited to welcome these talented individuals at SEM and look forward to the 2016-17 school year.

Welcome Natalie

Natalie Stothart will begin the 2016 academic year serving as SEM’s new Assistant Head for Community Life following seven years at Bay Path University, most recently serving as the Executive Director of Student Engagement. She brings a passion for women-centered teaching with vast experience in residence life, athletics, student leadership, and support. Prior to joining SEM she also served Bay Path as Director of Student Life and Assistant Director of Student Success and Retention.

Previously, Natalie worked at Providence College as an Academic Advisor while earning her Master of Education in Counseling.

A native of Canada, she completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Women’s Studies at Niagara University while also competing on its Division I volleyball team.

Natalie was eager to move back to the area after being away for over 10 years, and she is looking forward to joining the administrative team at SEM. Natalie is quickly settling into the Jody Douglass House, her Buffalo home, with her husband Bret and two young boys, Ben and Jack.

The planned retirements of Janie and Barbara coincided with the close of Remarkable Opportunities – Campaign for SEM. One can imagine what it meant to countless visiting or new parents and families when she took the time to welcome them. Living@SEM More than 50 students from across the country and around the world called SEM home this past school year. The Oishei House, Wendt House, Lipke House and Niscah House bubbled with activity and teenage vitality.

At any given time you might hear bits of Mandarin, Cantonese, German, French, and Spanish mixed in with English chatter.

Students appreciate the diverse international cultures they experience without even leaving the SEM campus. They welcome the opportunity to work on correct grammar and vocabulary in their regular lives, not just as an academic subject.

In addition to the outstanding and exceptional SEM education, students are supervised and cared for in the heart of Buffalo’s walkable Elmwood Village. The homes are situated in a gracious neighborhood where students

who have come thousands of miles for a fine education find peace and comfort with friends, dorm parents and SEM’s administration and faculty.

What makes the SEM residential experience homelike?

Home-cooked meals are provided seven days a week and the evening meals cater to international tastes and preferences. In addition to regular shopping excursions, weekly outings are selected to entertain and expose students to everything Western New York has to offer.

Among many excursions, this year’s residential students particularly enjoyed trips to Skyzone’s indoor trampoline park, Sky High Adventure Park in Ellicottville, ice skating at Canalside on Buffalo’s waterfront and tubing south of the city in snow country.

A cheer of universal support goes up whenever a residential student is recognized or elected to represent the student body.

With each passing year the residential program grows and becomes increasingly successful in blending day and residential students. Holiday home visits and open invitations to join in outings continue to blur the lines between all students.

It’s fascinating to learn that international students leave SEM with an appreciation for the remarkable educational program that their parents selected for them when they arrived years earlier. Kerai Xu ’16, summed it up this way: “In China, I was a cube and my teacher wanted to turn me into a sphere. At SEM, I can be a cube.”

Women Always at the Center of the SEM Art World

33 Years of Colby-Oishei Artists

If you have walked SEM’s hallways in the last 30 years you likely noticed the framed artwork hanging around the school. What many people do not know is that most of these artworks were made by women, and they are part of the Colby-Oishei Art Collection.

The Colby-Oishei program was started in 1983 by a SEM alumna, Patricia Oishei Colby '32 (her portrait hangs above the mantle in the former Upper West-Chester, now Colby Room).

The program aimed to bring women artists with a connection to the school or Western New York to SEM. Each artist exhibits her work, talks in art classes, and gives an artist lecture to the whole SEM community.

Fall of 2015 we welcomed Barbara French Pace ‘61 as our 49th ColbyOishei Artist. Barbara had a beautiful exhibition of her urban and rural landscape paintings on the catwalk.

She shared the details of her working process in art classes throughout the day, including photographs of in-progress paintings so the students could see how she creates an artwork from planning sketches to final details. Students loved getting a chance to see how she lays down an underpainting to give richer shadows and highlights to her final painting.

It is such a thrill to have a new artist in the building each year. As an art teacher I enjoy seeing how a Colby-Oishei Artist can affect student artwork. This year in particular I began to notice increased interest in and patience with underpainting. The ColbyOishei Program truly enlivens the art room in a different way each year.

Perhaps even more importantly, the Colby-Oishei program puts art by women on the walls at SEM. Women have long been under represented in the art world and while it’s getting better (thanks in large part to feminist art collaboratives like the Guerilla Girls) there is still a long way to go. By the Guerilla Girls’ count, in 2012 only 4% of the works hanging in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art were made by women. The contemporary art world does better but is still far from equal. In 2015 only 15% of the solo exhibitions at major contemporary galleries like Gagosian and Leo Castelli featured women. This is made even more significant when you consider that as of 2006 women made up 60% of college and graduate level art programs.

Nearly every artwork they see at SEM is made by a woman. It is programs like this that ensure that SEM graduates leave the school expecting to see equal representation in the college classrooms and beyond - and when they don’t they become strong advocates for themselves and others.

April 7, 2017, we will welcome our 50th Colby-Oishei Artist, Pamela Mitchell Henrich ‘62. Pamela returned to SEM as an art teacher and was the first Colby-Oishei artist in the fall of 1983. This visit, she will share her beautiful trompe l’oeil paintings with a whole new class of SEM girls.

Caitlin Cass joined SEM’s Fine Arts faculty in 2013.

Later in the Chapel, Barbara talked about the challenges of balancing her international relations career with her home life and her love for art. She reminded students that it is never too late to follow a dream.

The Most Adventurous Class in SEM History Which Colleges Did They Accept?

SEM’s Class of 2016 had an exceptional year in pursuing and completing the college process. These young ladies handled applications, visits, essay writing, and supplements with aplomb and remarkably few moments of anxiety.

What became apparent to many of them is that the college process in and of itself is quite simple - fill out the Common Application, write the essays, and pay the application fees.

What they also came to realize is that their SEM experience readied them to handle the college process as they did. The real work in preparing for college takes place in the three years prior to senior year, because those are the years in

which SEM students truly discover their passions, strengths and weaknesses and what they are looking for in a college.

This happens in the classroom, on the athletic field, on stage and even in the hallways and cafeteria at school. Every step of her SEM career helped each girl engage in the self-discovery and actualization that ultimately allowed her to find the best college for her. Moving forward, the Capstone project (read more about Capstone at BuffaloSeminary.org/MagExtras) will only enhance and refine this process of self-reflection.

In Memoriam Jennifer Read Regan ‘52 the folk and fibre artist, died on January 17, 2016, in Cambridge, MA. She was 81. Jennifer was SEM’s ColbyOishei Artist in 1991. She created and gave a tapestry of SEM that captures feminist history, SEM’s history, and her own history at SEM; it hangs in the front hall.

“In my work I like to combine past and present, myth and reality,” she wrote in the Semafore, published in the winter of 1991. “The past and the present merge in the building itself, too - an old-fashioned group of girls beautifully singing about stately mansions in one window and in another a black and a white girl holding a banner with the brassy demand, “she’s got to have it.”

“Remember to stand in working position. No muddy thinking. And … fail gloriously!” Say this to any Buffalo Seminary alumna from 1970 to 2010 and one person will immediately come to mind: Toni Smith Wilson.

The Class of 1994 wrote in their Seminaria dedication, “When we first stumbled upon you during our freshman year, we thought you were a madwoman. You expected more from us than anyone we had previously encountered. In your wild accessories and killer high heeled footwear, you were a force to be reckoned with.

Yet, you also became our friend….”

“Madwoman,” “force to be reckoned with,” “friend.” Toni Smith Wilson. I am privileged to have had Toni as part of my professional life for all of her 40 years at SEM. We first met in 1970 when, as Miss Smith, she came to SEM to do drama and create a theater program. (Continued at

The consummate volunteer, Ruth was a pleasure to work with. She was a loyal alum and an involved trustee who embodied the very essence of volunteerism. Cheerful and helpful, when Ruth took on the task of writing thank you notes to SEM donors, she accepted list after list with unrivaled enthusiasm. I looked forward to Ruth’s stopping by the Advancement Office to pick up her next assignment or to stock up on SEM note cards. She always came in with a smile on her face and an eagerness to get to writing!

Community School District dedicating its $16 million Valley High Performing Arts Center auditorium and classrooms to me on November 12, 2015. It is named the STAPLIN Performing Arts Center in recognition of my 33 years of leadership in the school district.

1957 Kate Truslow Montgomery: Retired and enjoying life in our longtime home. No plans to downsize or head south, though sometimes it looks like a good idea. Great to see Mary Hanrahan Berlow ‘57 in NY several weeks ago and visit the Munch Exhibit at the Neue Galerie.

1971 Lauren Belfer gave the Prince Lecture on May 17, 2016 to a packed house

at the Saturn Club. This first joint Prince Lecture in SEM and Nichols history brought Lauren to discuss her new book And After the Fire, published by HarperCollins. Both Nichols School Head Bill Clough and SEM Head of School Jody Douglass welcomed Lauren.

The Prince Lecture was established in 2004

by Mr. and Mrs. Warren Prince, Jr. and their daughters Allison ‘75 and Jennifer Prince Bronstein ‘78. Jennifer and her daughters Ryan ‘15 and Kilby ‘10 attended this year. Also in attendance were three of Lauren’s SEM teachers: Gary Sutton (French), Cornelia Dopkins (English) and Harry Schooley (history). Lauren, who writes best selling historical fiction, said “Harry really pushed me to try to get behind what I was reading in history books.”

1976 Dr. AmyBeth Taublieb: Just had my third book published and it’s entitled The Tail Wags the Dog - A Psychologist Reveals Two Hundred Lessons Learned from her Patients.

Amy Holden Jones has written The Tom Cat - The story of a heartless player who became a real pussy available only as a download on either Amazon or Kindle. A portion of the profits will go to animal rescue. Amy describes it as “a fairy tale for adults, not high literature; it is bite size and would make a good beach read. If you love pets, you’ll particularly enjoy it.” Amy has written the films Mystic Pizza and Beethoven, among other films, but this is her first book.

1973 Kathy Killeen Ashton: Greetings,

classmates! Life is still very busy in the marketing department at Providence College and teaching yoga, but turning 61 has me eyeing retirement and a change in lifestyle.

Would love to hear of other's experiences with this. Our daughters are great; Sara married and living in NH and Holly living a bit closer in Newport. David and I are enjoying life together and traveling whenever we can.

1978 Jennifer Prince Bronstein and daughter Kilby ’10: We have completely renovated the Half and Half clothing store at 1088 Elmwood Ave., which has been a fixture in the neighborhood for more than four decades. The mother and daughter team ditched the store’s exterior awning in favor of backlit signs above the store. In addition to women’s clothing and accessories, the new owners have added men’s clothing and a home goods section. In January, we bought the store from longtime owners and family friends Debbie and Bill Sidel, parents of Simone Sidel ’02.

1984 Lisa Faturos: Susan G. Komen Western New York honored Lisa Faturos with the 2016 Nora McGuire Volunteer Award at this year’s Komen Race for the Cure in June.

The award is given yearly for “extraordinary effort, outstanding leadership and dedicated commitment to the breast cancer cause.”

Lisa has been volunteering for Komen for 10 years, working as the chair of the Finance Committee and as lead for finance and accounting for the entire Western New York affiliate.

1986 Katherine Holloway Fusco: Looking forward to reunion — seeing friends and catching up with 1986. Living in Maine with my husband of 24 years and our five kids, ages 7-19. Busy with work and jobs and sports and just enjoying all Maine has to offer, as the way life should be. Go, Jackets!

Amy Habib Rittling ‘86

Amy Habib Rittling: Promoted, along with Jennifer Persico ’87, to co-lead the Litigation Practice Group at Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman LLP. Also, The Buffalo Niagara Partnership presented the 26th annual ATHENA Leadership Award to her on March 15. “The ATHENA Leadership Award honors exceptional individuals who have achieved the highest level of professional excellence, contribute time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, and actively assist others, particularly women, in realizing their full leadership potential.”

1987 Jennifer Persico: Earned her

bachelor’s degree and JD from the University at Buffalo, was named a partner at Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman LLP and, with Amy Habib Rittling ‘86, was promoted to coleader of the Litigation Practice Group.

Susan Henderson: It's been a whirlwind as we have moved several times in the past few years - first from Atlanta, Georgia, to Beijing, China, where we lived for two years, then to a rental house in Bethesda, Maryland, and finally to our own house this past fall. I've been married for 15 years and have three girls, ages 9, 11, and 11. I am working as the Chief of Epidemiology and Surveillance at the US Peace Corps headquarters, where I manage a small staff. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa between 1991-1993 so it's great to be back contributing to the organization that created so many opportunities for me.

I'm attaching a photo of my family on a recent trip to Switzerland in front of Lake Geneva. If you're in the DC area, please look me up!

1992 Valerie Caprio: Val’s sister, Cheryl

A bright light has gone out with the death of Valerie Jean Caprio…. So began my sister Val’s obituary after her sudden death in a car crash on September 30, 2015. Many may remember Val as brilliant and yet, distracted.

She had won a full scholarship to SEM not only by her stellar intellect on the tests but also, in the interview, by her enthusiasm for life and ideals. She had told interviewers the truth: “I want to start my own country!”

Disillusionment with the way things were here on earth carried her down many broken roads and through many heartaches, as I know even more after working to compile her poems and other writings. I guard these as treasures after her death!

2005 Moira Giammaresi: Moira, a

Caprio ’94, wrote the following:

In her last decade of life here, her laughter was still contagious, though rarely heard as she struggled through many hardships. Her “soulmate,” Robert van de Bogard, had died tragically in 2006; her close friend Gary died less than five years later. Though saddening her, her many losses had caused her to do a great deal of soul-searching. Valerie had figured out what mattered the most to her: her family, her faith, her beloved music and books. I am grateful for the years I spent with such an amazing and loving sister!

After sharing a group lunch with their classmates and alumnae, each student gave her unique perspective about her experience at SEM. Seniors received a single long-stemmed red rose and a charm engraved with their graduation year and “BSAA.”

BSAA President Tara Ellis '88, presented this original oil painting by Buffalo artist Peter Fowler, to Jody Douglass on behalf of the Association to thank her for her contributions to SEM as Head of School.

The painting is a depiction of Buffalo Seminary prominently featuring West-Chester Hall. The building was gifted to SEM by the Graduates’ Association as the BSAA was then known.
