No hay edad para superarse esto nos dicen los estudiantes que acuden al programa de Educación para adultos (AE) No hay edad para superarse esto nos dicen los estudiantes que acuden al programa de Educación para adultos (AE) quienes acuden al College Park a tomar sus clases de English. Katia Valencia es una de las instructoras de este programa pero cuentan con mas instructores ya que este programa cuenta con 4 niveles de English, Katia nos dice que ella es de México y que tiene aproximadamente 17 años viviendo aquí dentro de los Estados Unidos, Katia trabaja para Central Comunity College ( CCC ) en el programa de Educación para adultos, aparte de las clases de English también te preparan para sacar tu certificado de preparatoria, sin olvidar que también dan clases de Ciudadanía 4 veces por año. Este programa provee lo necesario al estudiante para que puedan estudiar sin que tengan que gastar, todo esto es gratis. “Tenemos estudiantes de todas partes del mundo quienes vienen a tomar las clases por diferentes razones, como por ejemplo algunos buscan estudiar para revalidar sus estudios o quieren continuar estudiando alguna carrera universitaria o de colegio, otros por ejemplo solo quieren tener una mejor oportunidad de trabajo, pero lo que si veo en todos los estudiantes es que todos están aquí por el deseo de superarse y poder comunicarse mejor. Durante la clase solo se habla English porque como mencione tenemos estudiantes de todas partes del mundo, tratamos que todos aprendan a escribir, escuchar, y hablar English,
también toman clases a través de una computadora porque nos interesa que aprendan a usarla ya que en muchas ocasiones cuando vas a solicitar trabajo tienes que hacer todo a través de una computadora, aparte de que esto es necesario para muchas cosas, nos dijo Katia” Tuvimos el placer de conocer a uno de los grupos de Katia que esta formado por estudiantes que vienen de Honduras, Etiopia, Sudan, Guatemala, México, Cuba, El salvador y Somalia quienes a pesar de ser de diferentes nacionalidades se integran y trabajan en actividades grupales de conversaciones en English para mejorar su fluidez en este idioma. Irania una estudiante de 32 años originaria de Cuba quien se encuentra embarazada y aunque su fecha de parto es en Septiembre ella sigue viniendo con mucho entusiasmo a la clase y nos comenta que solo lleva 2 años viviendo aquí en Grand Island, considera que el venir a estas clases le brinda la oportunidad de renovar su licencia de asistente de enfermería y seguir estudiando para enfermera y tomar mejores oportunidades de trabajo e invita a las personas a que vengan a tomar estas clases para que puedan cumplir sus metas. También tuvimos el placer de entrevistar a la Sra. Reynalda ella es de México, pero vive aquí con su familia, piensa que aprender English es importante para tener mejores oportunidades de trabajo, ella dice que para estudiar no hay edad ella tiene 52 años, y nunca es tarde para superarse. “Es importante
que la comunidad hispana tome esta oportunidad de seguir estudiando ya que es gratis, no tienes que comprar nada, aquí te proporcionan libros, diccionarios lápiz o lo que necesites para estudiar”, nos dijo Reynalda. “Todo lo que necesitas para superarte en este país y tener mejores oportunidades es saber English” nos dijo Yamilet que tiene 40 años y viene de Cuba y tiene 4 años viviendo aquí, ella desea seguir estudiando y dice que para superarse no hay edad. Ella vive con su familia y dice que le gustaría poder comunicarse mejor en English. Por último, platicamos un poco con Josefa Pablo, quien viene de Guatemala y dice que quiere seguir estudiando y perfeccionar su fluidez, para tener un mejor trabajo y que esta agradecida por esta oportunidad de poder tener algún día un diploma, ya que en su país no tenia esta oportunidad y no piensa desaprovechar esta oportunidad de estudiar gratis. Ella tiene 32 años. Como ustedes pudieron darse cuenta todos los estudiantes son de diferentes países, pero todos tienen una misma meta que es la de superarse, poder comunicarse mejor y que no importa la edad para que retomes tus estudios. l público ahora tiene acceso a impresoras 3D en las ubicaciones de bibliotecas de Lincoln City. T
here is no age to overcome yourself said students attending the Adult Education (AE) program at College Park taking English classes. Katia Valencia is one of the instructors of this program. But there are more instructors, as this program has 4 levels of English, Katia tells us that she is from Mexico and has been living here in the United States for approximately 17 years. Katia works for Central Comunity College (CCC) in the Adult Education program. Apart from the English classes the program can also prepare you to complete your GED. Citizenship classes are also offered 4 times per year. This program provides everything necessary for students to study with no cost at all. “We have students from all over the world who come to take classes for different reasons Some seek to study to revalidate their studies or want to continue studying for a college or university. Others just want to have better job opportunities , but what I do see in all the students is that they are all here because of the desire to improve themselves and communicate better. During the class only English is spoken because as I mentioned we have students from all over the world. We try to learn to write, understand, and speak English. Some classes are taken through a computer because we want them to learn to use it. Because in many ocassions when
you are going to apply for a job you have to do everything through a computer. Apart from the fact that it is a necessary skill for many things.” Katia tells us. We had the pleasure of meeting one of the group of students of Katia. It is formed by students from Honduras, Ethiopia, Sudan, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador and Somalia who despite being of different nationalities are integrated and work in activities and group conversations in English to improve their fluency in this language. Irania is a 32-year-old student from Cuba who is pregnant and although her due date is in September she continues to come with great enthusiasm to the class and tells us that she has only lived here in Grand Island for 2 years. These classes give you the opportunity to renew your nursing assistant license and continue studying to become a nurse. They give you better job opportunities and invite people to come and take these classes so they can meet their goals. We also had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Reynalda she is from Mexico, but she lives here with her family, she thinks that learning English is important to have better job opportunities. She says that to study there is no age, she is 52 years old, and in her opinion it is never too late to overcome yourself. “It is important that the Hispanic community takes this
opportunity to continue studying, because it is free, you do not have to buy anything, here they provide you with books, pencils dictionaries or whatever you need to study,” Reynalda told us. “All you need to overcome yourself in this country and have better opportunities is to know English” Yamilet told us. She is 40 years old and comes from Cuba, she has lived here for 4 years. She wants to continue studying. she lives with her family and says she would like to be able to communicate better in English. Finally, we talked a little with Josefa Pablo, who comes from Guatemala and says that she wants to continue studying and perfect her fluency, to have a better job and that she is grateful for this opportunity to have a diploma someday. ‘It’s heartbreaking’: military family shattered as wife of decorated US marine deported to Mexico
A
ll Estela Juarez wanted for her ninth birthday was for her family to be allowed to stay together. What happens after Ice tears your family apart: ‘The storm descended’. The gift from Donald ump’s administration, however, was fully in keeping with its zero-tolerance stance on immigration. On Friday, Juarez, an American citizen, will leave the only country she has ever known and board a plane to Mexico as US officials enforce a deportation order against her mother, Alejandra. Her father, a former US marine, national guardsman and decorated combat veteran, will stay in Florida with Juarez’s 16-year-old sister, Pamela. The breaking apart of American military families marks a new low point in Trump’s war on immigration, some White House critics believe, while Alejandra Juarez – who is being expelled 20 years after she entered the US illegally from Mexico as a teenager – says it is a “slap in the face”. “When I think about the service my husband has given this country it just breaks my heart,” she said. “They try and punish me for something that happened a long time ago, but they’re not punishing me, they’re punishing my husband, my kids. It makes you think if it’s really worth fighting for this country when it comes down to this, putting your life at risk for a country that doesn’t take your service into consideration.”
Juarez, 39, and her 41-yearold husband, Cuauhtemoc – known as Temo – were both born in Mexico. But while he came to the US legally as a child and became a naturalised citizen in 2002, shortly before a 16-month deployment in Iraq, Alejandra has spent their entire 18-year marriage as an undocumented immigrant. Even so, until Trump took office in 2017, she was not at risk of deportation. “For the last four years I have been told that I wasn’t a priority, I have no criminal record, I’m a military spouse, I’m untouchable, don’t worry, you’re fine,” she said, recalling her twice-yearly check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) since a 2013 traffic stop flagged her as illegal. “However, when this administration took over things changed. Obama didn’t fix this situation but he didn’t deport people like me. Immigration knew I was here and said under the Obama rules I wasn’t a priority. On Wednesday, the family learned that Juarez’s latest and final application for a so-called “parole in place”, a discretionary deferment of removal proceedings against certain close relatives of serving or past military personnel, was rejected. Essentially, she was barred from the programme anyway because of a document she signed in 1998, when she was first caught in the US and deported. She said it was explained to her at the time as paperwork keeping her out of jail but learned only later it was a promise never to return. Their only other hope had been a political fix in Washington, but despite some bipartisan support, the Protect Patriot Spouses Act sponsored by Darren Soto, a Florida Democratic congressman who represents the Juarez family’s home town of Davenport, has so far failed to win enough backing to progress. “No military spouse should be deported. It sends the wrong message to our troops who have sacrificed everything,” the politician told reporters when he unveiled the bill in April. Soto also made no progress with a private bill for legal residence he introduced on Juarez’s behalf. “I will continue to support the Juarez family and continue the fight against the Trump administration’s heartless immigration policies tearing families apart,” he said in a statement after an expedited order of removal was issued
last week. For Juarez and her daughters, Thursday night will be spent on the sofa watching movies for the last time together as a family and trying not to think of their imminent separation. Estela, who just weeks ago was finishing third grade and planning a summer of fun with her friends, must start at school anew in an unfamiliar country and in a language she does not speak fluently. Meanwhile Pamela, who was willing to give up her own studies to look after her little sister, whom she calls “the best thing that ever happened to me”, will have to face the challenges of her teenage years without the guidance and support of her mother’s presence. “They’re still trying to digest it,” Juarez said. “Estela wants to stay here but is too young to take care of herself, she needs her mom. Pamela is very kind and wants to take care of her but she’s 16 years old. She is a teenager, she has a future here, she’s taking college classes, and wouldn’t have that in Mexico. Even though it’s hurting me and it’s burning me alive, I have to think about what’s best for her. “As for me, I can’t imagine waking up in Mexico thinking where’s the last 20 years of my life? Where’s my husband? Where’s my child? It’s heartbreaking.” The family have no relatives in Mexico to turn to for support, and Alejandra is insistent she will not return to the same crime-ridden areas
of Mexico City she escaped two decades ago. “I didn’t think it could get any worse than when I was living there but it has,” she said. “I don’t know where we will go. They might as well deport me to China or England.” She also wonders if her marriage, which remained strong through the stresses of her husband’s various deployments, can survive this separation, especially because Temo voted for Trump in 2016. “I said Trump was insulting Mexicans in general but he said he just talks a lot. Then when Trump released his executive orders I was mad at him. He just said he never thought it would come to this,” she said. Meanwhile, bad publicity for the Trump administration over military deportations is becoming more prevalent. As well as American Families United suggesting almost 12,000 servicemen and women have relatives facing deportation, figures from US Citizenship and Immigration Services appear to show a significant recent increase in refusals of parole in place applications. The military news website Stars and Stripes reported this week that denials leapt from 11% in the last full year of the Obama presidency to 16% in the first eight months in the 2018 fiscal year.

Chelsea Nowel, an attorney with the Tampa immigration law firm Maney Gordon Zeller, which represents the family, said it was “incredibly frustrating” that parole in place and stay of removal applications were denied on the same day. “She has been under an order of supervision, contributing to society and raising her family for five years,” she said. “Now, due to the new zero-tolerance policy, Ice can no longer exercise their discretion and permit her to stay with her US citizen husband and children.
