Los varones tienen más probabilidades que las mujeres de recibir la RCP en público por parte de un testigo presencial, y tienen mayores posibilidades de sobrevivir tras la aplicación de una medida de emergencia, según un estudio preliminar presentado en las sesiones científicas de 2017 de la American Heart Association (un foro internacional de gran importancia sobre los últimos avances en ciencia cardiovascular para investigadores y médicos).

Con datos procedentes del consorcio de resultados de la reanimación, una red de centros médicos regionales de Estados Unidos

y Canadá dedicados a la investigación de tratamientos extrahospitalarios para el paro cardíaco y el traumatismo, varios investigadores analizaron 19 331 eventos cardíacos ocurridos en el hogar y en escenarios públicos.

En general, los testigos presenciales aplicaron la RCP en el 37 % de los eventos cardíacos ocurridos en lugares varios.

El 35 % de las mujeres y el 36 % de los varones recibieron la RCP en casa, lo que no muestra diferencias significativas entre ambos géneros en cuanto a la probabilidad de recibir asistencia.

En escenarios públicos, el 45 % de los varones recibió asistencia en comparación con el 39 % de las mujeres.

hat is menopause?

Menopause is a normal change in a woman’s life when her period stops. That’s why some people call menopause “the change of life” or “the change.”

During menopause a woman’s body slowly produces less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. This often happens between ages 45 and 55. A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months in a row.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Every woman’s period will stop at menopause.

Some women may not have any other symptoms at all. As you near menopause, you may have: Changes in your period—time between periods or flow may be different.

Hot flashes (“hot f lu she s” ) — ge t t i ng warm in the face, neck and chest with and without sweating.

Night sweats that may lead to problems sleeping and feeling tired, stressed or tense.

Vaginal changes—the vagina may become dry and thin, and sex may be painful.

Thinning of your bones, which may lead to loss of height and bone breaks (osteoporosis).

Who needs treatment for symptoms of menopause?

For some women, many of these changes will go away over time without treatment.

Some women choose treatment for their symptoms and to prevent bone loss. If

you choose hormone treatment, estrogen alone or estrogen with progestin (for a woman who still has her uterus or womb) can be used.

What is hormone therapy for menopause?

Lower hormone levels in menopause may lead to hot flashes, vaginal dryness and thin bones.

To help with these problems, women are often given estrogen or estrogen with progestin (another hormone).

Like all medicines, hormone therapy has risks and benefits.

Talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about hormones. If you decide to use hormones, use them at the lowest dose that helps. Also use them for the shortest time that you need them.

Does it make a difference what form of hormones I use for menopause?

The risks and benefits may be the same for all hormone products for menopause, such as pills, patches, vaginal creams, gels, rings, or “custommixed (compounded) hormones” prepared by a pharmacist.

Are so-called “bioidentical hormones” safer or more effective than other forms of hormone therapy for menopause?

The FDA does not have evidence that “bioidentical hormones” are safer or more effective than other hormone products. FDA believes that the benefits and risks are likely to be the same.

Is the hormone estriol a “safer form of estrogen”?

The FDA has not approved any drug that contains estriol. FDA does not have evidence that shows that estriol is safe and effective.

Has FDA approved other treatments for menopause?

Yes. In 2013, FDA approved: a non-hormonal treatment for moderate to severe hot flashes

associated with menopause. a medicine to treat moderate to severe dyspareunia (pain with sexual activity) due to vaginal changes that occur with menopause.

Are herbs and other “natural” products useful in treating symptoms of menopause?

At this time, we do not know if herbs or other “natural” products are helpful or safe. Studies are being done to learn about the benefits and risks.

Esta receta mantiene el pavo jugoso y lleno de sabor.

También puedes preparar un pollo, si lo prefieres al pavo.

Ingredientes: 3/4 taza de aceite de oliva 1 cabeza de ajos, pelados y machacados 1 puño de romero fresco, picado 1 puño de albahaca fresca, picada 1 cucharada de hierbas italianas secas Sal y pimienta negra recién molida al gusto 1 pavo entero Modo de preparación: Precalienta el horno a 180 ºC. Mezcla el aceite de oliva, ajo, romero, albahaca, hierbas italianas, Sal y pimienta. Reserva.

Lava el pavo por dentro y fuera. Seca y retira cualquier exceso de grasa.

Afloja la piel de la pechuga, frotando cuidadosamente con tus dedos entre la piel y la carne. Sigue frotando hasta terminar de aflojar la

piel de las piernas, cuidando de no rasgarla.

Unta una buena cantidad de la mezcla de romero bajo la piel de la pechuga, muslos y piernas. Frota el resto de la mezcla sobre la piel.

Coloca el pavo sobre la parrilla de una fuente de horno y agrega suficiente agua para cubrir el fondo de la misma. Mete al horno precalentado y hornea durante aproximadamente 50 minutos por kilo.

Relleno para pavo de champiñones y hierbas finas Esta receta mezcla cubos de pan bolillo, champiñones, manzanas y hierbas. Un relleno para pavo al estilo americano 500 gramos de champiñones frescos, limpios y cuarteados 6 cucharadas (86 gramos) de mantequilla 1 taza (170 gramos) de cebolla picada 1 taza (125 gramos) de apio picado 1 cucharadita de sazonador de pollo o hierbas finas 1 cucharadita de sal 1/4 cucharadita de pimienta negra recién molida 12 tazas (1 1/4 kilos) de bolillo o baguette en cubos

de 1 centímetro 1 1/2 tazas (375 mililitros) de caldo de pollo 2 huevos, ligeramente batidos 2 tazas (250 gramos) de manzanas peladas y picadas 1/2 taza (15 gramos) de perejil fresco picado Precalienta el horno a 190 °C y engrasa un refractario grande.

Calienta la mantequilla en un sartén grande. Agrega los champiñones, cebolla y apio, y sofríe durante 5 minutos. Retira del fuego y sazona con el sazonador de pollo, sal y pimienta.

ashington, DC - As the NA ACP’s California chapter argues that the “StarSpangled Banner” should be dropped as America’s national song because it is “racist” and “anti-black,” members of the Project 21 black leadership network condemn such claims as cynical and divisive.

Black conservatives with Project 21 also note that this lobbying by the NAACP conflicts with earlier claims by left-wing activists that activities such as NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem are about free speech and not directed at the flag or the song.

“This is sad. We have a so-called civil rights group so desperate to find racial division and ?bigotry that it invents it by slurring our nation’s anthem,” said Project 21 Co-Chairman Horace Cooper, a former assistant law professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. “The National Anthem is the citizen’s hymn of America. It represents all that is great about our country. The California NAACP should know better.”

At its recent state conference, the California chapter of the NAACP passed a resolution demanding that the “Star-Spangled Banner” no longer be America’s anthem. It is currently trying to gain support for its cause

among state lawmakers in the Golden State. In doing so, it contradicts earlier assertions that recent protests have nothing to do with the flag or the song.

“I guess the California NAACP didn’t get the memo that these protests are not about protesting the flag, but are supposedly about First Amendment rights. In making its case against the “StarSpangled Banner,” the NAACP chapter cites the third verse of the song -- a verse that is not well-known and not sung in the context of the National Anthem.

One line in that verse reads, “No refuge could save the hireling and slave.”

Historically, the words “hireling” and “slave” could have applied to many types of people at that time and may not necessarily have been referring to chattel slavery.

Furthermore, there is no

documentation of author Francis Scott Key ever explaining the meaning of the line.

Cooper noted: “Claiming that the lines from a song written in 1814 were intended to malign blacks reveals more about either their ignorance of history or their willingness to outright fabricate claims against our country. I feel the need to condemn this action in the strongest terms.

Dividing America for no just reason in this cynical way may bring attention and maybe even financial support to this chapter, but at what? cost?”

Project 21 member Ted Hayes, a community activist in Los Angeles, added: “Similar to tearing down Confederate statues, this is another distraction from the reality that the NAACP has failed to stop the mad, self-destructive and murderous carnage of black citizens at their own hands. Now no longer stealthy in an apparent mission to destroy the USA more than the National Anthem, the NAACP might as well seek to remove our Constitution -- finally revealing itself as a socialistic, antiAmerican entity.”

ew research by finder. com shows Americans will spend a whopping $59.57 billion on the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales this year, and over 10% of which will be online (an estimated $6.18 billion).

An estimated 117 million American adults (47.8%) have deferred dropping dollars on items in anticipation for the release of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, with a 1-2 month wait being the most common, followed by a few weeks. In fact, 5.9% of us have been waiting an entire year to spend big on the shopping holiday!

While 117 million of us are eagerly waiting to see what’s on offer come November 24, an estimate of more than 108 million American adults (44.1%) are confident that they’ll be parting with their cash over Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year.

Americans are planning to spend an average of $550 each during the sales, and it’s expected that online sales will hit a record high. Online retail sales is growing 5-times faster than

total retail trade (average for the year to Q1 2017: year-onyear growth for total retail trade was 2.9% compared to 15.1% for e-commerce). Q4 2016 e-commerce retail sales were $1.22 billion – 9.4% of total sales.

Following this trend, finder estimates online retail trade will make up 10.4% of total retail sales this quarter.

Total November sales is projected to be $435.3 billion, according to finder.com, based on the average growth in retail sales for November each year since 2010 (after the financial crisis) of 4.6%.

BlackFriday/ Cyber Monday sales is estimated to make up 13.7% of total November sales.

Her doubles partners included Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Gigi Fernández and Helena Sukova.

She came to prominence in singles at the Australian Open in

Police can run license plates if officers see something suspicious

W

hat led a Grand Island police officer to check to see if a car’s license plate fit the vehicle last week?

Whether an officer checks a license plate might have something to do with the time of day or if something about the vehicle is suspicious.

At 1:18 a.m. Wednesday, Jeremie Mitchell was stopped at Cottage Street and North Huston. The officer observed that Mitchell’s 2005 Pontiac Grand GT bore a license plate that was registered to a different vehicle.

By the time the traffic stop was over, the 38-yearold Mitchell had been arrested for a felony, two misdemeanors and an infraction. The felony involved the possession of methamphetamine.

By punching a license plate number into their in-car computers, officers can easily access a vehicle’s registration information.

Among other things, the information tells an officer the make, model and color of the proper vehicle — everything that’s on a car’s pink slip.

In Mitchell’s case, it was easy to spot the discrepancy. The plate checked by the officer should have been on an SUV instead of a four-door car.

The officer probably ran the Pontiac’s plate partly because of the time of day, the neighborhood “and thought maybe it was suspicious,” said Grand Island Police Capt. Jim Duering.

Sometimes, an officer will notice that a car is dirty and the license plate is clean.

Or the officer might notice the plate isn’t fastened very well.

“There are lots of little indicators that the guys will look for,” Duering said.

With the in-car computer, “it takes very little effort to check registration,” Duering said. So at that time of the morning, if an officer “thinks something is a little bit suspicious,” it doesn’t take a lot of effort to check the car’s registration and do a little investigation, Duering said.

Checking the registration doesn’t do anything to inhibit the driver’s progress. “You can do that while you’re just following behind them for a block or two,” Duering said.

So if the Pontiac had the correct plate, then Mitchell wouldn’t have been stopped? “Well, at least not for that cause,” Duering said.

If police had some suspicions, they probably would have watched the car’s driving and pattern “and done a few of those things for a couple of blocks,” Duering said.

But in this case, that wasn’t necessary because the Pontiac clearly wasn’t the vehicle it should have been. The difference was glaring, Duering said.

Most Grand Island police officers have good enough knowledge of cars that they can quickly identify a make, Duering said. They can tell the difference, for example, between a Pontiac Grand Prix and a Chevy Impala, “even though the two are similar vehicles,” Duering said.

The area involved also played a role in Mitchell being stopped.

A lot of property crimes “have been kind of up and down that Broadwell corridor, which is really close to where he was,” Duering said. “I think they’ve been working that pretty hard anyway.”

Later Wednesday in Hall County Court, Mitchell was charged with possession of a controlled

substance, possession or use of drug paraphernalia, no proof of insurance and fictitious plates. Possession of a controlled substance is a Class 4 felony. Mitchell was released on his own recognizance.

Beginning with plates issued in January of this year, all Nebraska license plates come equipped with bar codes. The bar code is used only by the Department of Motor Vehicles when drivers obtain their plates. The information contains the plate number and the type of plate. Some Nebraska counties have scanners that scan a plate when it’s given to a motorist. Entering information that way eliminates the need to type it.

Law enforcement personnel do not scan license plates, but some scan vehicle registration slips and driver’s licenses.

Both have bar codes on them.

Nebraska State Patrol troopers scan those documents for the electronic warnings and citations they issue.

Scanning registration and licenses saves time because the troopers then don’t have to type the information.

The stickers affixed to Nebraska license plates do not contain bar codes.

Grand Island police have never had a scanner that reads the digits on a license plate.

“They are a really effective tool. They’re something that I wouldn’t mind having,” Duering said. “But they’re costprohibitive right now. It’s just probably not going to happen.”

High school junior takes charge of farm while dad is ill B OELUS — Todd Nelson hasn’t been able to farm for a few months because he’s been battling throat cancer.

Nelson, who farms northeast of Boelus, finished his cancer treatments Sept. 15. He’s been on a feeding tube since Aug. 18.

Nelson, who’s never smoked, has had a rough time. It’s been devastating to watch him go through the ordeal, said his wife, Katrina.

Nelson, 54, has been home since Nov. 8.

The cancer cells are now dead. But he still has to deal with severe radiation damage, and it’s going to take a while until his body heals.

Katrina is encouraged that things will get better. “It’s just going to take time because the radiation takes a lot of time to get over,” she said.

The last time Nelson was able to work was Aug. 20, after his second chemo treatment.

In the meantime, his family, friends and neighbors have stepped up to take care of his operation.

The Nelsons’ youngest son, Jesse, has done a lot of the farming, even though he’s only a junior at Centura High School.

“Well, he asked me to run it while he’s sick right now,” Jesse said. The 16-year-old will keep at it until his dad is feeling better.

Jesse has been going hard since June. His dad did the planting, but Jesse’s done a lot since then, including irrigating, cutting alfalfa and harvesting corn and soybeans.

“Jesse’s been saying he’s wanted to farm since he was 3 years old, and it never left him,” his mother said.

Centura School has been good in dealing with the Nelson family the last few months.

“Knowing the circumstances, they let Jesse have work release” so he “gets out of school just a little bit early,” she said.

Last month, Katrina attended parent-teacher conferences.

“He’s maintaining a high B average, and that’s where he’s always been. So it hasn’t affected him there,” she said.

Two of Jesse’s friends who’ve helped in Nelson’s absence are Kyle Pullen and Ethan Hurt.

On Wednesday, four Centura students were harvesting corn after school. Jesse was being helped by Hurt, Pullen and Tessa Raymer.

Hurt, 16, is assisting Jesse “because he’s a good friend.

I’d do anything for a friend.

He’d do the same for me.”

Pullen, 18, says he’s “just helping a guy carry on a tradition.”

Hurt and Pullen have known their friend a long time.

“Jesse and I go way back,” Pullen says.

Raymer is Jesse’s girlfriend.

In the field Wednesday, she was helping to keep Jesse awake, one of the friends joked.

As of Wednesday, Jesse had 120 acres of corn left to pick.

The total workload included 400 acres of corn and 700 or 800 acres of soybeans.

“It’s been quite a road,” Hurt said. The whole project is in Jesse’s hands and he’s doing pretty well for a 16-year-old, Hurt said.

“I couldn’t do it. It’d be too much stress for me,” Hurt said. “Yeah, I’m proud of him.

He’s doing pretty good.”

The family has also received a lot of help from adults.

Todd’s brother, Mel, is a diesel mechanic who hauled beans for the family.

Help has come from area farmers James Nelson, Marv Caspersen and two of the farm’s landlords, Tim Koperski and Steve Kyhn.

Another of the Nelsons’ sons, Curtis, has helped, even though he works full time. Also pitching in have been Aaron Reikes and Curtis’ girlfriend, Cameron Hemphill.

Family friend Levi Woodring has come from Holdrege to help. He turns down offers of money, saying he’s happy just eating Katrina’s meals.

Aurora Co-op drivers asked if they could pull some pipe apart.

Katrina appreciates all the things people have done.

That includes jobs that people do without being asked. “They just do it,” he said. It is “so nice,” she said.

Thanksgiving una celebración de agradecimiento

l Dia de Acción de Gracias se celebra en los Estados Unidos el cuarto jueves del mes de noviembre y alrededor de la misma fecha en otros lugares.

Las oraciones de agradecimiento y las ceremonias especiales de Acción de Gracias son comunes entre casi todas las religiones, esta tradicional cena comenzó como un día de dar gracias por la bendición de la cosecha y del año a punto de terminar, época en la que se reúnen las familias para comer los tradicionales platillos, y no solo se celebra en Estados Unidos, también se celebra en Canadá, Liberia, y algunas Islas del Caribe y festividades con nombres similares se llevan a cabo en Alemania y Japón.

En Estados Unidos, la tradición del día de Acción de Gracias tiene sus orígenes en el año 1623 en una celebración en Plymouth, en el actual estado de Massachusetts.

También existen

evidencias de que los exploradores españoles en Texas realizaron celebraciones en el continente con anterioridad en 1598, y fiestas de agradecimiento y por una buena cosecha. En los años posteriores, la tradición continuó con los líderes civiles tales como el gobernador William Bradford, quien planeó celebrar el día y ayudar. En 1623. como al principio la colonia de Plymouth no tenía suficiente comida para alimentar a la mitad de los 102 colonos, los nativos de la tribu Wampanoag ayudaron a los peregrinos dándoles semillas y enseñándoles a pescar. La práctica de llevar a cabo un festival de la cosecha como este no se volvió una tradición regular en Nueva Inglaterra hasta finales de la década de 1660.
