Programa“Strong Fathers” reforzando la relación entre padre e hijo Viene de la página pr inc i pa l . . . . . .est a compañía Strong Fathers se vincula con las escuelas públicas de Grand Island para dar conferencias y actividades que ayudan a los padres a relacionarse e involucrarse más con sus hijos en la escuela nos dijo la directora de la escuela Lincoln tambien nos comentó “queremos que los papas sepan que son bienvenidos y que este programa ayuda a reforzar la relación padre e hijo, y al mismo tiempo queremos que los papas se involucren más en las actividades escolares y esperamos que ellos entiendan que es lo que hacen los niños en el salón de clases con su maestra (o), creemos que esto influye un poco en la educación del niño de manera favorable. Aquí en esta escuela tenemos buena comunicación con los padres. Este evento se va a llevar a cabo dos veces más este año en esta escuela. El programa está pensado en enseñar al papa que para su hijo (a) también es importante su participación en las actividades escolares no solo de las madres,

sabemos que los papa siempre están ocupados porque son los que se mantienen trabajando, las mamas son cariñosas y preocupadas por sus hijos por naturaleza, es por eso que este programa se lleva a cabo para que nuestros estudiantes se sientan apoyados por ambos padres, cuando los papas acuden a algún evento con su hijo, es increíble la manera en la que ellos demuestran su felicidad y su orgullo de ir de la mano de papa” concluyo la directora de la escuela Lincoln.

Tuvimos también una pequeña entrevista con el presentador de este programa Bob Buckel quien nos dio un poco de información de acuerdo a sus conocimientos y experiencia, “Muchos de los papas dejan a las mamas la responsabilidad de estar siempre con los hijos en todo lo que tenga que ver con la educación , y es muy importante que los papas se involucren en la educación de los hijos, tenemos padres de diferentes culturas pero la mayoría de ellos dejan esta responsabilidad a las

mamas, sin saber que los niños se desenvuelven mejor cuando papa se involucra en su educación.

Nosotros estamos contentos de que muchos papas pudieron venir con sus hijos a este programa, especialmente sabemos que la familia es muy importante en la comunidad hispana.

Pasamos un buen tiempo y obtuvimos una muy buena participación de los padres, después de terminar este programa les dimos unas hojas en las que les hicimos algunas preguntas, una de esas preguntas era ¿piensas hacer algún cambio personal con tu hijo después de este programa? Y pudimos ver la respuesta positiva de muchos padres diciendo, voy a jugar más con mi hijo, voy a leerle más libros a mi hijo, y el ver estas respuestas me hace sentir realmente feliz, porque me doy cuenta de que los padres y la escuela tenemos los mismos objetivos con los niños, que sean buenos estudiantes, y que sean feliz en la escuela.

Cada presentación que hacemos en las escuelas es diferente,

tenemos el programa de lectura, ciencia, matemáticas y escritura.

Este es el primer año que implementamos este programa en las escuelas primarias, este mes hemos llevado a cabo 6 conferencias en diferentes escuelas primarias de Grand Island, y el mes que viene, vamos a volver a ir a todas las escuelas a las que ya fuimos pero vamos a hacer diferente actividades, por lo general comenzamos primero con traer a papa a su clase, después seguimos con matemáticas, en donde los papas juegan con sus hijos con material que nosotros les proporcionamos como tarjetas y juegos. Es una manera de enseñar al papa que en el juego, la lectura, en la escritura y en lo que sea, las familias se pueden unir y ser una mejor familia por eso este programa se llama Strong Fathers / Strong Families, los padres aprenderán a socializar más con su hijo y darse cuenta que él puede participar más en la vida de su hijo (a) porque esta convivencia

es fundamental para el buen desarrollo físico y mental de cualquier niño, cuando los papas están involucrados en la vida de los hijos, ellos son mejores estudiantes y se desenvuelven mejor socialmente y mentalmente, en todo ellos se desarrollan mejor” El fundador de este programa fue Mike Hall, y la razón por la que el creo este programa fue porque alguien en su familia se divorció, y el papa nunca se involucró mucho con sus hijos, esto hiso que uno de los hijos lo resintiera mucho, y por eso fue que el empezó a crear este programa. Él es un principal ya retirado de las escuelas públicas y su interés en iniciar con este programa es que los papas sepan que ellos son importantes en la vida de sus hijos sean hombres o mujeres.

Nuevo Hospital Regional en Grand Island que necesitaba el apoyo de la comunidad para hacerlo realidad.

The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating and carving jack-o-lanterns.

Around the world, as days grow shorter and nights get colder, people continue to usher in the season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.

ANCIENT ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts,

who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.

This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

In addition to causing trouble and damaging

crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each

other’s fortunes.

When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead.

The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

ALL SAINTS DAY On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church.

Pope Gregory III later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13 to November 1.

By the 9th century the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, where it gradually blended with and supplanted the older Celtic rites. In 1000 A.D., the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the

dead. It’s widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related churchsanctioned holiday.

All Souls Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All Saints Day celebration was also called All-hallows or Allhallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-Hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

Great Planes Air Expo held at Central Nebraska Regional Airport

variety of small planes were on display Wednesday at TregoDugan at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport. It was all part of the Great Planes Air Expo, sponsored

by KCAC Aviation of Johnson County, Kan. KCAC is the largest authorized Pilatus sales and service center in the Midwest.

Aviation experts and representatives of plane manufacturers and new plane dealers were present. They answered questions such as financing and insurance. Those dealers include Cirrus, Pilatus, Quest Kodiak and TBM. The expo focused on turboprops and piston planes. The planes ranged in price from under $1 million to around $5 million.

The Quest Kodiak was designed for use by mission societies. The other planes were the Cirrus SR 22-T, Daher TBM 930 and Pilatus PC-12.

About 75 percent of takeoffs and landings at U.S. airports are by general aviation planes. The majority take place at airports commercial airlines can’t access, said Mike Turner, KCAC marketing director.

Turner said there are tax benefits and insurance considerations in owning a plane. Private aviation provides business travelers with

reduced travel times and increased work efficiency.

Turner said the expo educates business travelers on owning a private plane.

He said this is the first time the Great Planes Air Expo has been in Grand Island.

“The whole intent of the event is to bring our airplanes out to busy people,” he said.

He said a lot of times people can’t make it to the bigger air shows held in places like Las Vegas, Orlando and Oshkosh, Wis. “Our intent is to bring the airplanes out to the people,” Turner said.

“Grand Island is one of those opportunities where you have a large population. You have a lot of businesses and there is a fair number of airplanes in the area. We want to come out and make it as easy as possible for people to see our airplanes.”

The market for smaller planes has been “pretty steady,” Turner said.

“In today’s world, our business has been growing over what it has been in the past,” he said. “Now the business climate across the country is pretty upbeat. It is an opportunity for us to get out and show our wares.”

While KCAC represents the Pilatus plane, they invite their competitors to also show aircraft at the expo.

“It is for our customers to compare and contrast that airplane that is best for their mission,” he said.

A small plane can help enhance a business, he said.

“If I’ve got an ag dealership or car dealership in a particular town, driving can be very time consuming,” Turner said. “Airline service doesn’t exist in much of rural Nebraska.”

Grand Island’s airport has commercial flights to Dallas, Las Vegas and Mesa, Ariz. But there is no direct service to smaller Nebraska communities.

“If I had a dealership in Grand Island and dealerships in North Platte, McCook or Lincoln, the only way to get there is drive or own my own airplane,” Turner said. “It is a lot more efficient owning your own airplane.

You can get to all those sites in one day and make it back home for dinner that night.”

The Great Planes Air Expo is a three-day event. There were stops in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Ankeny, Iowa; Sioux City, Iowa; Grand Island and Omaha.

Kevin Pool: A plumber by trade, he answers his calling on Sundays

K

evin Pool of Grand Island feels called to teach middle-schoolers in Sunday school, and he’s been doing so for five years.

Pool, 40, is a plumber during the week and has been in the business for 20 years. On Sundays, though, he leaves that behind and teaches the middle school class at First Presbyterian Church.

“This is a calling — I’ve heard it and listened to it and I’m going to obey it,” he said of his Sunday school teaching.

With five to eight students each week, Pool seeks to challenge each member of the class.

He tries to present both teachings and training.

“I teach them about the Bible, obviously,” he said. “The big, popular stories in the Bible — we dive into those a little deeper than the grade school kids do. We know a little more than that Noah had a boat and all the animals. I try to make them think a little more because they’re capable of it. I make them look up verses in the Bible; I make them work for things.”

He is also concerned about guiding his students’ actions.

“The middle school kids are in a very important part of their lives,” Pool said. “They can go one way or they can go the other, and of course we want them to go the good way — and hopefully leave some of the bad influences behind them.”

How does Pool work toward this goal?

“I talk a lot about my own personal faith in hopes of saying, you know, this isn’t just in a book — ‘You make up your own mind, but I’m telling you what I believe,’” Pool said.

“We do a lot of sharing,” he added. “I try to make it fun, I try to throw a little bit of humor in there.

And most importantly, I want to be their friend.

I’m going to toot my horn a little bit, but it’s also great for these kids to have somebody to look up to.”

Pool goes on four-day mission trips with his students. And once a month he and his students have “fun nights” focusing on a wide variety of activities.

“We always throw a short lesson in at the end, but it all revolves around having fun and becoming friends and becoming a closer family,” he said.

As a member of First

Presbyterian, several years ago he was asked to teach Sunday school.

He agreed and took on the task.

“The first time was “a disaster,” he said. “So I said that was a lot of work; I want to take a year or so off.”

He did just that, but was asked to teach again when his older daughter was in the class.

“As I did it, friendships happened and this time I wanted to be there,” Pool said. He has now continued teaching the class without interruption.

“I hear God say, ‘You need to be here. This is your ministry right now, this is what you need to do, this is where you need to be,’” Pool said.

“It’s not my idea; it’s God’s idea.”

His family includes his wife, Lisa, and daughters Kaitlyn, 15, and Carley, 12.

His current employment is at Plumbest Plumbing, mostly doing “service work.”

plain that it would push ahead regardless with its measures to suspend regional autonomy under article 155 of the Spanish constitution.

He said Puigdemont had no intention of attending another senate session on Friday.

The speaker of the Catalan parliament, Carme Forcadell, also told regional MPs that Thursday’s crucial plenary session – at which Puigdemont is under growing pressure to make a unilateral independence declaration – had been pushed back to the afternoon.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that some members of the Catalan president’s coalition were still urging him to end the impasse by calling regional elections, while others were pressing him to declare independence – a move he has so far resisted.

Junqueras rejected calls for a snap election, saying it would be wrong “to renounce the democratic mandate that we have from citizens”.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, said Puigdemont’s disregard for the constitution had left him with no choice but to invoke article 155.

Tensions between the governments in Madrid and Barcelona have risen to new heights following Puigdemont’s decision earlier this month to hold a unilateral independence referendum in defiance of Spain’s constitutional court.

Although Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence two weeks ago, he has proposed that its effects be suspended for two months to allow for talks.

Rajoy has refused to engage in dialogue with Puigdemont until he abandons his independence plans and has said there can be no international mediation on a domestic, constitutional issue.

On Saturday, Puigdemont described Madrid’s invocation of article 155 as the worst attack on Catalonia’s institutions since General Franco’s dictatorship, and accused the Spanish government of “slamming the door” on his appeals for dialogue.

According to the regional government, 43% of Catalonia’s 5.3 million registered voters took part in the referendum on 1 October, but a further 770,000 votes were lost after Spanish police stepped in to try to halt the vote. The Catalan government has said it is not including those votes in its final turnout tally.

Indonesia fireworks factory explosions kill at least 47 people

Dos explosiones y un posterior incendio en una fábrica de fuegos artificiales en las afueras occidentales de la capital indonesia mataron al menos a 47 personas e hirieron a decenas más, dijeron las autoridades.

Indonesia fireworks factory explosions kill at least 47 people

ozens more injured in two blasts and fire at factory on outskirts of Jakarta that opened just two months ago Two explosions and a subsequent blaze at a fireworks factory on the western outskirts of Indonesia’s capital have killed at least 47 people and injured dozens more, officials have said.

TV news channels broadcast images of thick plumes of dark smoke billowing from a warehouse in the Tangerang district of Jakarta, an industrial and manufacturing hub on the island of Java.

“There are 47 bodies,” police spokesman Argo Yuwono told Metro Television.

“From the manifest we obtained there were 103 workers.” Of this latter figure, 46 were injured in the explosion, he said, adding that they were being treated at three nearby hospitals.

Witnesses told local media there were two explosions, one at about 10am and another about three hours later, both of which could be heard

miles away.

Harry Kurniawan, the Tangerang police chief, said the bodies were discovered by his officers when they entered the factory warehouse, the Detik news site reported.

He said the death toll could rise further as many of the dozens of injured have extensive burns.

Beni Benteng, a local resident, told AFP he heard an explosion and people inside screaming for help. “My friends and I and some police officers knocked down a wall so people could escape, then the workers came out,” he said. “I saw people including women were jumping from above, oh my God.” Authorities have not yet said how the fire started, but confirmed it began near the front door and quickly spread.Media images of the PT Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses warehouse showed smouldering ash and debris, and the roof missing. The factory had been operating for less than two months, local media reported.

Friends and family

looking for loved ones thronged a nearby police hospital in Keramat Jati on Thursday.

Video footage shot by an AFP stringer showed victims, covered in bandages, laid out on stretches and others with minor injuries sitting in the hallways or outside.

A factory worker at the hospital said the fire erupted in the middle of production. “I don’t know how it happened, I was working outside of the factory and there were some explosions, four cars exploded and almost all motorbikes also exploded,” Ade, who suffered burns to his arms and legs, told AFP. Deadly fires are not uncommon in Indonesia due to poor safety standards that are routinely flouted.

Seventeen people were killed when a fire ripped through a karaoke bar on Sulawesi island in 2015.

t first everything seemed routine about the man looking to buy a home.

He knew he wanted to live near a golf course. He could talk intelligently about financing. He even showed up to tour the home near 178th and Leavenworth on Friday with his bank statement in hand.

But after he held the agent’s gaze a bit too long, asked her to enter the master bedroom first, then unfastened his belt and put his hand inside his shorts, it was obvious something was wrong.

The 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted third-degree sexual assault, lewd conduct and disturbing the peace.

The real estate agent credited self-defense training she had taken for helping her navigate the situation. The man asked her to enter the rooms before him and she wouldn’t, allowing her a possible escape route.

It’s less about knowing how to fight and more about knowing how to keep yourself from being a victim, the 50-year-old woman said.

“Real estate agents need to take Realtor safety seriously. They need to realize it can happen to them and it can happen to anybody, male or female,” she said. “It’s a good thing it happened to me and not someone else because I’m probably a little bit more prepared. ... I hope he gets help because something is wrong.”

The woman was giving the man a tour of the home on Friday about 2:30 p.m. when the incident occurred.

The man then went into a bedroom, took off his shorts and asked the woman to join him on top of the bed.

She told him to leave the home.

“We both know why we are here,” the man said at one point, according to a police report. “Don’t you find this a turn-on?”

The real estate agent texted a colleague for help, who called 911. When help didn’t immediately arrive, she called another friend who advised her to call 911 back, to be more insistent and to tell dispatchers that the man was still there and that it was an attempted sexual assault.

Sheriff ’s deputies quickly arrived, followed by police.

Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputies detained the man without incident.

“I don’t know why someone would go through all those hoops and then do what they did,” said Mark Leaders, president of the Omaha Area Board of Realtors.

He wants to offer selfdefense classes for all members of the association.

“We just want everybody to be safe and take precautions,” he said.

“If you don’t know the customer, I would definitely go with a friend.”

Marsha Tiessen, a real estate agent with NP Dodge, said she has been aware of risks to female agents. She makes sure to meet with someone beforehand and not just accept a request from the Internet.

“This is too close to home,” she said. “She did everything she could. ... That’s what’s really troubling.”
