California wildfires: 23 dead as winds threaten to worsen out of control blaze It comes from the homepage......The death toll has climbed to 23 as wildfires continue to blaze almost completely out of control in California’s wine country and firefighters expect weather conditions to take a turn for the worse. “Now the winds are going back up and the humidity is going back down,” said Heather Williams, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire, the state agency responsible for fire protection. “We’re still not out of the woods. It’s a very serious situation.” In the tiny wine country town of Glen Ellen, where the ground was still smoking from the flames that tore through early Monday morning, Loren Davis, of the Mountain volunteer fire department, had a blunter assessment: “It’s a shitstorm.” He added that in 20 years of firefighting, he had never seen anything like the Tubbs fire, one of the now 23 major wildfires burning in California. He said he had been part of the first team on the scene and it was “freaking crazy” – moving so fast that they couldn’t do anything to fight it. Residents of the Eastridge development in the Bay Area city of Fairfield were busy loading their cars on Wednesday afternoon as flurries of ash fell over the neighborhood like a dry, putrid dusting of snow. Firefighters and police officers were stationed every few blocks in the sprawling development of rolling hills, large houses and meticulously landscaped gardens, waiting for the order to declare a mandatory evacuation. “I’m nervous,” said Annette Abrao, gesturing toward her cigarette as she stood in her driveway. Abrao, a dental hygienist, and her husband, Eddie, a landscaper, had left work

early to get home and prepare to leave. Their truck held photographs and documents, while a trailer was packed with camping gear, a golf cart, and a taxidermied elk head – a memento from a 2010 hunting trip. “We have a house full of stuff, and the things that were really important fit in a truck and trailer,” Eddie Arbao said. “What does that tell you?” The fireline was about three miles north as of late Wednesday afternoon, said the Fairfield fire department deputy chief, Matt Luckenbach, who was on standby for the evacuation orders and has been on duty since the early hours of Monday. Though the fire wasn’t advancing quickly yet, On Bridle Ridge Road – one of the most vulnerable sites in Eastridge – four Fairfield firefighters joked, drank coffee and monitored the wind as they waited for the fire to approach, or not. “It’s like the calm before the storm,” said Elliott Blanton, a probationary firefighter in his first year on the force. “Kind of exciting, but sobering too.” Captain Mike Guerra, a 26-year veteran, said that the neighborhood was relatively protected because it was well landscaped, with few areas of tall brush. While the state agency Cal Fire confronts the wildfire itself, the local force is positioned to protect people, homes and other structures should the fire encroach on developed areas. “We’re not bulletproof, but we’re pretty well prepared,” Guerra said. “Waiting is the hardest part.” Still, he added, “It’d be preferable to do all this preparation and have nothing happen.” Many in Eastridge expressed a sense of gratitude that they had

time to prepare, unlike the residents of Santa Rosa, 50 miles north of San Francisco, where entire neighborhoods were razed to the ground early Monday morning, leaving little more than charred heaps of belongings, skeletal trees and melted cars. Bob Lando, 71, grasped a folder of important documents as he finished up packing on Wednesday afternoon. The retired lawyer said he was “holding out hope” that the winds would die down, but added: “It’s nice to be prepared.” Lando’s son had not been so fortunate: his entire stock of 2016 vintage was “vaporized” when the fire burned his winery, Lando Wines, near Santa Rosa earlier in the week. ‘They went together’: couple, aged 100 and 98, die in California wildfires Read more More than 20,000 people have headed to evacuation centers across the region, with more leaving their homes as new areas are threatened. Thirteen of the fatalities occurred in Napa and Sonoma counties, about an hour north of San Francisco, and the others in the state’s northern and eastern reaches – six in Mendocino County and two in Yuba County. The Sonoma County sheriff, Robert Giordano, said the number of missing-persons reports had surpassed 600, up from about 200 a day earlier. But officials believe many of those people will be found, saying that the chaotic evacuations and poor communications over the past few days have made locating friends and family difficult. He also expects the death toll to climb. “The devastation is enormous,” he said. “We can’t even get into most areas.”

The Lincoln Police Department’s Center is offering the citizens of Lincoln a Gun Amnesty Day

O

n Saturday October 28, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, the Lincoln Police Department’s Center Team, partnering with the Lincoln/Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition is offering the citizens of Lincoln a Gun Amnesty Day. The purpose of the event is to offer citizens the opportunity to drop off any unwanted firearms and ammunition. The effort is completely anonymous, no questions asked. The goal is to remove unwanted firearms and ammunition from circulation. Lincoln / Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition will provide handgun lock boxes and trigger locks to the community, free of charge (while supplies last.) Individuals who would like a free handgun lock box may come to the Gun

Amnesty event at 1501 N 27th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. While some suicides are deliberative and involve careful planning, many appear to have an impulsive component and occur during a shortterm crisis. Chronic, underlying risk factors such as substance abuse and depression are also often present, but the acute period of heightened risk for suicidal behavior is often only minutes or hours long (Hawton 2007). Barriers put between an individual in crisis and lethal means save lives. From 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, personnel will be on hand to take possession of any unwanted, legal or illegal firearms and ammunition. Citizens are encouraged to bring those items to the parking lot on the north side of the building at 1501 N. 27th Street. No identification will be asked for, no

identification is required, no questions asked. No compensation will be given for any firearms or ammunition that is surrendered. Firearms should be transported in the trunk or back seat of a vehicle in an open box, bag or container. Once at the drop off site tell the person that contacts you at your vehicle where the firearm is located and let them retrieve the firearm. It is preferred that firearms be surrendered unloaded and any breaches, slides, bolts, cylinders or actions should be open. However, if citizens are not familiar with how to unload their firearm and attempting to do so would create a hazard, transport the firearm to the site and inform the person that contacts you at your vehicle that the weapon may not be unloaded.

he City of Kearney Sanitation Division has partnered with the Kearney Elks Lodge #984 for the creation of an Environmental Ambassadors Program. Kearney Elks Lodge #984 will assist with Kearney’s Household Hazardous Waste Program to extend the hours that the “Restore” is open to the public. Previously the “Restore” was open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The program will now add hours on the first and third Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to noon. These new hours

will be in effect from April through October. The “Restore” is located in the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, at 3620 Box Butte Avenue, Kearney, NE. Items that are taken to the HHW facility that are in good, usable condition are then put into the “Restore” for anyone to come and take, free of charge. This not only helps the patrons out by not having to purchase these materials, but it also helps the HHW Program cut down on disposal costs. The HHW Program is excited to partner with

the Kearney Elks Lodge #984. The members of the Kearney Elks Lodge #984 are very active in the community and will be an asset to the HHW program. On the first and third Saturday of every month, these members will volunteer at the HHW Facility to greet and assist patrons. The “Restore” will be open on October 7, 2017 and October 21, 2017 before ending for the winter months. The weekend program will resume in April of 2018 and run through the end of October.

Questions remain about police response to Las Vegas massacre A revised chronology given by investigators for the Las Vegas massacre is intensifying pressure for police to explain how quickly they responded to what would become the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Two hotel employees had called for help and reported that gunman Stephen Paddock sprayed a hallway with bullets, striking an unarmed security guard in the leg, several minutes before Paddock opened fire on a crowd at a musical performance, killing 58 people and injuring nearly 500 others. At 10:05 p.m. Paddock began his 10-minute deadly barrage into the crowd, firing off more than 1,000 rounds, police said. Police didn’t arrive on the 32nd floor until 10:17 p.m., which is two minutes after he had stopped firing. Questions remain about what happened in the six minutes between the time police say Paddock fired off 200 rounds through the door of his 32nd-floor suite into the hallway of the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino and when he unleashed a deadly hail of gunfire into the crowd at a the Route 91 Harvest festival. Chief among them: Were police notified immediately about the hallway shooting and did officers respond quickly enough to have a chance to take out the gunman before could carry out the bloodshed? How crucial were the minutes that elapsed before the massacre began? Here’s a look at what we know and still don’t know about the six minutes in question: On Monday, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Paddock shot and wounded the security guard outside his door and opened fire through his door around 9:59 p.m. six minutes before shooting into the crowd. That was a different account from the one police gave last week:

that Paddock shot the guard, Jesus Campos, after unleashing his barrage of fire on the crowd. The sheriff had previously hailed Campos as a “hero” whose arrival in the hallway may have led Paddock to stop firing. On Monday, Lombardo said he didn’t know what prompted Paddock to end the gunfire and take his own life. A hotel maintenance worker, Stephen Schuck, told NBC News on Wednesday that he told hotel dispatchers to call police and report that a gunman had opened fire in the hallway on the 32nd floor. He had been called there to check out a report of a jammed fire door and made it about a third of the way down the hall when he heard gunshots. Schuck saw Campos, the security guard, peek out from an alcove and was told to take cover. He described bullets whizzing past his head as he tried to flee the shooting. “It was kind of relentless so I called over the radio what was going on,” he said. “As soon as the shooting stopped we made our way down the hallway and took cover again and then the shooting started again.” Gunshots can be heard in the background as Schuck reported the shooting on his radio, telling a dispatcher: “Call the police, someone’s firing a gun up here. Someone’s firing a rifle on the 32nd floor down the hallway.” Campos had been dispatched to the 32nd floor before Schuck to respond to an alarm that signaled a door was open and heard an odd drilling sound, police have said. As he approached there was a series of single gunshots through the door, one of which hit him in the leg. At about the same time the maintenance worker arrived and Paddock fired more than 200 rounds through the door at Campos and Schuck. As he was running away,

Campos used his radio and possibly a hallway phone to call for help, Assistant Sheriff Tom Roberts confirmed to The Associated Press. Late Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Mandalay Bay questioned the latest timeline of events provided by police. “We cannot be certain about the most recent timeline that has been communicated publically (sic), and we believe what is currently being expressed may not be accurate,” said Debra DeShong, a spokeswoman for MGM Resorts International, which owns the Mandalay Bay hotel casino. The company’s statement did not offer what it thinks was the correct timeline. A security officer in a casino-hotel the size of Mandalay Bay, with about 3,200 rooms, would typically report the shooting to an in-house dispatcher who would then call Las Vegas police, said Jim Tatonetti, an executive with Griffin Investigations, a Las Vegas company that provides security and surveillance information to casinos. Tatonetti said they should have gotten word quickly about the shooting from the lead hotel security supervisor or they would hear the call from police dispatch. “When you have law enforcement on property you defer to them,” Tatonetti said, adding that hotel security officers would turn to their primary duty: guest safety. Officers would focus on evacuating and keeping guests away from dangerous areas. A large casino in Las Vegas might have 50 or more security officers on a shift, Tatonetti said. Supervisors might be armed. Few on regular patrol have guns. Some might have emergency medical train This note was published in the The Grand Island Independent

Trump criticises Puerto Rico, saying hurricane aid cannot go on ‘for ever’

D

onald Trump renewed his criticisms of Puerto Rico on Thursday and said the US government could not keep providing federal aid in the wake of Hurricane Maria “forever”. The president attacked the US territory in a series of tweets on Thursday. He said there was a “total lack of accountability”, attributing that thought to the governor, Ricardo Rosselló, and “electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes”. The president added: “We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most

difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” The House is on track to back Trump’s request for billions more in disaster aid, $16bn to pay flood insurance claims and emergency funding to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico stay afloat. Thursday’s hurricane aid package totals $36.5bn and follows a $15.3bn measure that passed last month. The measure sticks close to the White House request, ignoring – for now huge demands from the powerful Florida and Texas delegations, who together pressed for some $40bn more.

Several lawmakers from hurricane-hit states said a third interim aid request is expected shortly – with a final, huge hurricane recovery and rebuilding package likely to be acted upon by the end of the year. Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on 20 September. It has killed at least 45 people, and about 85% of residents still lack electricity. Trump has come under fire for a patronising and callous attitude to the island, and got into a high-profile spat with the capital’s mayor, Carmen Yulín Cruz. This

It comes from the homepage......save lives. The money is used to fund innovative research, provide free information and support programs to patients and caregivers, and to help reduce breast cancer risks or find it early when it’s most treatable. That’s why your participation in these walks is absolutely critical to our success. The

more money we can raise through these walks, the bigger the impact we can make on cancer. We’ve had a good start. The American Cancer Society has played a critical role in many breast cancer breakthroughs including funding the drugs Tamoxifen and Herceptin. Money raised this year could go towards

developing the next generation of lifesaving treatments. Which means you could be a part of the next big breast cancer breakthrough! Let’s all share our passion and walk together so that no one has to ever walk through a breast cancer diagnosis alone. Join an event now and help us save lives from breast cancer.

Pregnancy and infant loss awareness day n honor of babies who are now with the Lord and their parents who long to see them again, please join Spirit of Life church as they acknowledge National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Day. What is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Day? In 1988, President Ronald Reagan made this profound statement: “When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them. This month [October] recognizes the loss so many parents experience across the United States and around the world. This awareness day is also meant to inform and provide resources for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirths, birth defects,

SIDS, and other causes. The Spirit of Life Church welcomes families and communities to join them on October 15th at 4:00pm for a special service and balloon release. Located at 3148 Dove Hill Ave, Kearney, Nebraska 68845 If you would like to honor your baby who is now with the Lord, please let the church know by emailing info@ spiritoflifechurchkearney.com as soon as possible. They will provide a balloon for each baby’s life that they will be honoring. Their goal is to fill the sky with clouds of white balloons, and encourage grieving families by saying, “You are not alone. We remember your babies. This event is organized by Spirit of Life Women’s Ministry Team Becky Lumbard, event chairman.

Recordamos a tus bebĂŠs “. Este evento estĂĄ organizado por el Equipo de Ministerio de Mujeres de Spirit of Life Becky Lumbard, presidenta del evento.

Unesco US quits UN heritage agency over ‘anti Israel bias’

T

he United States has formally notified the UN’s world heritage body Unesco that it is withdrawing its membership of the organisation, citing “continuing anti-Israel bias” and “mounting arrears”. The US would seek to “remain engaged … as a non-member observer state in order to contribute US views, perspectives and expertise”, a state department statement added. Unesco’s director general, Irina Bokova, said she had received formal notification of withdrawal from the US secretary of state, Rex Tillerson. In 2011 the US cancelled its budget contribution to Unesco in protest against the admission of Palestine as a full member. In a statement Bokova expressed her “profound regret” over the US decision. “This is not just about World Heritage,” she said, describing the withdrawal as “a loss to both the organisation and the US”. Unesco members are voting on a replacement for Bokova, whose term in office is coming to an end. After two days of a secret ballot that could run until

Friday, Qatar’s Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kawari is leading France’s Audrey Azoulay and Egyptian hopeful Moushira Khattab. The emergence of Kawari has been seen by Israel and the US as a failure of their efforts to secure the post for a figure they regard as more friendly. Earlier this week Israel’s Unesco ambassador described the trajectory of voting in the secret ballots as “bad news for the organisation and unfortunately also for Israel”. According to a report in Foreign Policy, the US decision was also driven by a desire to make budget cuts. Foreign Policy reported that the decision to pull out had been made several weeks ago during the UN general assembly in New York, was taken over the heads of officials who had argued that the US should wait until after the Unesco election process was complete. The US previously withdrew from Unesco under Ronald Reagan, only to rejoin under George W Bush. Unesco has drawn the ire of Israel and the Trump administration for a series of decisions, including the

listing of Hebron, a city in the southern part of the occupied Palestinian territories, as a Palestinian world heritage site. In October Israel suspended cooperation after the agency adopted a draft resolution that Israel said denied the deep historic Jewish connection to holy sites in Jerusalem. The Trump administration has been preparing for a withdrawal for months, and a decision was expected before the end of the year, according to US officials. Several diplomats who were to have been posted to the mission this summer were told that their positions were on hold and advised to seek other jobs. In addition, the Trump administration’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year contains no provision for the possibility that Unesco funding restrictions might be lifted. The lack of staffing and funding plans for Unesco by the US have been accompanied by repeated denunciations of Unesco by senior US officials, including the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. This note was published in THE GUARDIAN

NOTICIAS NACIONALES

EE. UU.

This note was published in THE GUARDIAN

Husker students work to preserve ‘American Treasure’

L

incoln, Nebraska, Oct. 9, 2017 – For a small group of students involved with the Tractor Restoration Club at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, fixing up tractors from their greatgrandparents’ era is a key part of college life. Created in 2005, the club typically restores two or three tractors a year, to be used either for display at the Lester Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum or sold for the benefit of the museum. The club has been presented an unusual challenge for 201718: to prepare a 1945 Allis Chalmers Model C for display at the Homestead National Monument near Beatrice. Members will meet Oct. 12 with Al Levitan, a conservator from West Virginia who is consulting for the Friends of Homestead, to discuss how to recover and ready the little tractor with a tricyclestyle front end for permanent display. Forty years ago, it was used to clear land on the last homestead claim in the United States, filed in 1974. Retired Beatrice physician C.T. Frerichs provided financial support to the Friends of Homestead for the conservation project. Typically, club members aim to make their projects run like new and gleam like they’re fresh from the assembly line. Their goal with this rusty, lichen-encrusted machine will be to stop its deterioration so it can survive as a testament to one homesteader’s grit. It is the first time in Levitan’s 35-year career as a conservator that he has helped prepare a tractor for a museum exhibit, though he has worked on other large objects such as stagecoaches, mining equipment, automobiles and

horse-drawn carriages. Doug Koozer, a club adviser and president of the Friends of the Larsen Tractor Test Museum, met Levitan in Alaska to help rescue the tractor. The model is far from rare – about 84,000 were manufactured at the company’s Wisconsin plant – but this specific tractor has a special story. It was lifted by helicopter in June from a roadless site in Alaska, the last land in America to be claimed under the federal Homestead Act of 1862. Homesteader Ken Deardorff used it to clear hundreds of tree stumps to farm the land as required by the homesteading law. Club president Joshua Bauer said he was in disbelief when he first saw the tractor after it was delivered in August to the club’s East Campus shop. “It was an incredible undertaking to go all the way to Alaska to get that one tractor,” he said. “Now it’s actually here and it’s my responsibility. We’ll never get to do something like this ever again. It’s truly a once-in-alifetime experience.” Mark Engler, superintendent at Homestead National Monument of America, said the tractor is an “American treasure.” The involvement of the Larsen Museum staff and the restoration club have been critical to the effort to save the machine and tell its story. “We can’t thank the tractor club enough for assisting us with this project,” said Diane Vicars, president of the Friends of Homestead. “Being able to get this tractor in condition for display in the lobby of the Monument’s Heritage Center will complete yet another amazing chapter in both the nation’s homesteading story and its

agricultural history.” The students are among tens of thousands of people across the country who are interested in antique farm machinery. More than 23,000 people, for example, follow an Allis Chalmers Facebook page, while 50,000 subscribe to Antique Power magazine and 25,000 subscribe to the Green Magazine for John Deere aficionados, published in Bee. Almost every weekend there’s a farm mechanization festival somewhere in the United States. National directories list scores of clubs devoted to the interest. The club reflects the university’s history and mission in agricultural education, particularly its nationally recognized tractor test laboratory and the Larsen Museum. But it also fits more recent emphasis on “maker” activities, where students learn creative ways to solve problems by mastering skills like welding and engine repair. “It’s a change of pace for the students and lots of practical aspects, though not many of them are going to end up in the tractor restoration business,” said Milford Hanna, a retired biological systems engineering professor and an adviser to the group. “They come from all different backgrounds, from all across the university. And they are always working on tractors. That’s what it’s all about. You can’t even imagine how dirty they get.” tKoozer, a tractor restoration expert from Cheney, has been in the antique tractor business for 30 years. He said the project provides students a deeper perspective on their restoration efforts.

The NFL stood by African American players … until its money was threatened

s

omehow this is where we find ourselves in America in 2017: the president of the United States uses race to drive a wedge between football players and their fans while the world’s mostlucrative sports league caves to his tweets. NFL players are sacrificing their brains for a league that will make at least $14bn off them this year. Many are shorting their memories, breaking their bodies and forgoing any hope of walking normally past the age of 45. The majority of them do not have guaranteed contracts and while the very best are paid well for the tiny window that is their professional career, they remain among the most exploited of American professional athletes – their sports lives dangling by the sturdiness of their ACLs. For a time it seemed the NFL would support its players in the face of Donald Trump’s publicity grab. When the president told an Alabama audience last month that he wanted to see NFL owners fire players who do not stand for the national anthem in protest at racial inequality, the league took a stand against the president’s intolerance. Owners and players kneeled. Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed disappointment in Trump. Trump’s declaration he wanted to “get that son of a bitch off the field,” was that kind of moment that shocked everyone into a united stand for decency. Since the vast majority of the players who have kneeled for the anthem are African American, Trump was essentially saying: “Get that black son-of-a-bitch off the field” and everyone appeared to agree that Trump had crossed a line. That is until the money was threatened. The business of being an NFL owner is such a good one that no man or woman who holds a team among their possessions dares do anything to kill their golden goose. A decade ago, the league’s most valuable team – the Dallas Cowboys – was estimated by Forbes to be worth $1.6bn, and a third of the teams had values below $1bn. Today, the least valuable franchise is worth $1.6bn while Dallas’s worth has soared to nearly $5bn. This is, of course, phony wealth, claimed only on the

open market. The figures are buttressed with stadium palaces built on the backs of taxpayers, huge television deals and private marketing agreements sold against the logos of the teams themselves. With the teams’ outlandish values tied to an image the owners do everything to protect, it’s no wonder Dallas’s Jerry Jones said on Sunday he will bench any player who “disrespects the flag” by kneeling during the anthem. There was good PR in standing against Trump two weeks ago, but the more the president turned his fire on the NFL – and as TV ratings slid – the more those bars wobbled on the value charts. Whether she meant to or not ESPN’s Jemele Hill drilled straight into the NFL’s mostsensitive nerve this week when she tweeted the best way to get to Jones was through the advertisers. Hill’s words brought her a two-week suspension from her employer and more direct attention from Trump, whose White House has been pushing for her firing. But the league’s need to keep building its wealth leaves it forever chasing new pots of gold while trying to keep the appearances of opulence to the television networks and advertisers who throw billions its way. This is how teams like the Rams and Chargers actually grow in value despite playing before whole sections of empty seats in their new Los Angeles home. The simple act of moving to the nation’s secondlargest market has made them worth more, making the other owners’ teams appear to be more valuable as well. So when Jones snapped, Hill dared mention the advertisers and Trump tweeted about changing the league’s taxexempt status, the NFL wanted nothing more to do with their players taking a public stand for social justice. It didn’t matter that Trump’s suggestion the league should lose a tax-exempt status was outdated by two years (the NFL gave that up in 2015). Any threat toward the owners’ sweet public money deals is enough to drop the iron fist upon dissent. The players’ stand against a raging Trump seemed easy until talk turned to damming the rivers of cash that could

help the owners fetch billions for their teams should they wish to sell. Suddenly Trump turned the defeat of a league united against him into a deft political win. Through this he has aimed his most vicious tweets at two African Americans: Hill and former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who started the anthem protest last year to draw attention to racial inequality. Trump says his anger with the NFL is about respect for the flag and the country but the whole thing is coded in race and after two days of hammering the wedge he has managed to use race to turn the league against the players. The NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, surrendered peacefully to Trump on Tuesday when he sent a memo to all the teams saying players should stand for the anthem while adding some soggy language about respecting the players’ desire for social change. He said he was doing this because the controversy over the anthem is “a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues”. But he was really giving into Trump’s fire before things got ugly with the revenue streams. The quickest way to breaking the NFL is through money and Trump, a man who once bungled the USFL’s certain court victory over the NFL, understands this well. He opened racial wounds, used his vice-president as a puppet by forcing him to leave a tribute to Peyton Manning and drove the country a little farther apart, but he won. He made the NFL crack. None of this has much to do with running a nation and yet policy doesn’t appear to be the point. He got the leaders of a league that is 70% black to put those black men back in, to use a loathsome term, “their place”. The opportunity for the great national conversation about race – which was the whole point of Kaepernick’s protest – is fading. Trump can declare a win. In getting Goodell to bring his players to their feet he brought the NFL to their knees. And no one is better for it. PUBLISHED / THE GUARDIAN

ould the US ultimately emerge from the wreckage of its failed attempt to reach the 2018 World Cup finals as a bigger power? “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” striker Jozy Altidore wrote on Twitter on Wednesday night. He might have added that whatever doesn’t kill you makes you miss out on millions of dollars of sponsorship and prize money, an incalculable amount of free publicity, invaluable experience for young players, expanding the fanbase, enhancing international credibility and leveraging the only way to achieve a mass domestic television audience. So, stronger? No. What the confounding 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday will do is accelerate by nine months a process of hand-wringing, navelgazing, retirements and resolutions to make structural changes that probably would have occurred next summer anyway. It is hard to believe that a mediocre group of players under Bruce Arena’s monochrome management would have made it very far in Russia. Other than that, and reducing the chances of any more radioactive “why soccer is un-American” columns from Ann Coulter, there can be no benefits to losing an invitation to the party. It’s impossible to say just how harmful the US’s absence will prove because of the lack of recent precedents. Next year’s World Cup finals will be the first without American involvement since 1986. That’s 10 years before the inaugural season of Major League Soccer transformed the landscape. In the mid80s the team included part-timers and players more used to the indoor format. The magnitude of the shockwave on Tuesday night is a reflection of how far soccer in the US has developed in the past three decades. But if a solid platform means that publicity, attention and reputation are less vital than they were 10 or 20 years ago for a sport that’s facing obstacles to continued growth rather than an existential crisis, that very progress underlines why failing to make the tournament now is so unacceptable. The US was part of the World Cup furniture; a familiar, solid, comfortable piece. Not especially ornate; but an absence that will be noticed in Russia. The Americans had become such a fixture every four years, and Concacaf’s qualification such a simple test, that it is more eyebrow-raising to see them missing from Russia than to anticipate a tournament without the Netherlands. Yet anyone expecting swift accountability and humility from US soccer’s key figures would have been disappointed (though perhaps not surprised). More than 24 hours

after the trauma in Trinidad, US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati – the man chiefly responsible for hiring Arena and appointing then culling his predecessor, Jürgen Klinsmann – had not resigned. Nor had Arena. England are a shrivelled side these days, but even there, Roy Hodgson had quit after the Euro 2016 loss to Iceland before the sound of the Viking clap was done echoing in his ears. “You don’t make wholesale changes based on the ball being two inches wide or two inches in,” a tone-deaf Gulati told reporters straight after the T&T defeat, sounding every inch the calm, ruminative economics lecturer that he is, curiously enough, when he’s not being an unpaid volunteer who directs a non-profit governing body that’s reportedly sitting on $100m. But you should make wholesale changes after failing to prosper in one of the planet’s leastchallenging qualification formats, a blunder marking a nadir after several years of uneven but palpable decline. Four years ago the US topped their qualifying group with seven wins from 10 games. They won the qualifying group for the 2010 and 2006 World Cups, too. Dominance built buzz. Viewing parties in a Chicago park attracted 20,000 fans per game in 2014. Television ratings were strong (even if they only amounted to about 7% of the population watching the big games). Christian Pulisic, the US’s best player in the qualifying campaign, was poised for a mainstream breakout. Now, as SI.com reports, Fox Sports, the US rights holder for 2018, is expected to try to mitigate the inevitable decline in viewership with a redoubled emphasis on Mexico and overseas superstars such as Lionel Messi. Instead of acting as US Soccer’s quadrennial marketing opportunity, the tournament will cement America’s status as football’s greatest multicultural marketplace. It’s not that there isn’t a thriving soccer culture in the US; it’s that the environment is diverse, crowded and not fully centered around the national side as it is in most other countries. It’s entirely possible to be deeply passionate about the sport while maintaining only a passing interest in the US national team and MLS. Last year’s Copa América Centenario, more PR gimmick than prestige event, attracted an average crowd in excess of 46,000 despite high ticket prices. The US’s quarter-final win over Ecuador in Seattle drew 47,322 and was by far the worst-attended of the four games in the round. Instead of looking forward to 14 June, when the tournament kicks off in Moscow, American anticipation will center on the day before, when Fifa decides the hosts of the 2026 tournament.

Spoiler alert: the joint US, Canada and Mexico bid is almost certain to get the nod ahead of Morocco. Given 2026, Gulati’s influence within Fifa, the US Department of Justice’s 2015 corruption investigations, the excellence of the women’s team and the country’s appeal to national and club sides enticed by its facilities, wealth, size and untapped potential, the US is and will remain an influential country regardless of how its men perform on the pitch. The relevant question, then, is not new, just more pointed now: how does the US graduate from hosting elites to joining them? Only 15 months ago the aim was for the US to ascend from regional power to global force, with Klinsmann targeting the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. “Things are definitely moving in the right direction. Our goals are challenging but achievable,” he told CNN. Four months later he was sacked after the final qualifying phase began with losses to Mexico and Costa Rica. It concluded a five-year stint in which Klinsmann set lofty standards which he and his players mostly failed to reach. In place of a clear vision of tactics and youth development there was a rose-tinted fog of good intentions. He challenged America’s best players to show they could compete with the world’s finest; on Tuesday they were outfought by the worst team in their qualifying group. As for bringing through young talent: of Arena’s 23-man squad in Trinidad, 14 were older than 30. The 19-year-old attacker, Pulisic, was the only player under 22. Would lowered expectations - a return to the old hallmarks of spirit, solidity, athleticism and organization rather than a more ambitious emphasis on stylish play and dazzling individual expression – in fact herald better results? Is only a moderate squad overhaul required, or are the five years before Qatar 2022 enough time to effect a total rebuild that places the emphasis on youth development and shrugs off shortterm results with a view to securing medium- and long-term success? That reaching the World Cup finals became so routine may have flecked US Soccer from boardroom to field with a hint of the arrogance and entitlement of the traditional oldworld powers, without the results, coaching structure, strong domestic league or effective youth system that would merit such self-assurance. The country clearly has the resources and potential for greatness, but right now the old underdog identity that served them well in the past seems like a more natural fit. Klinsmann’s blueprint was an Icarus project. PUBLISHED / THE GUARDIAN

G.I. man arrested in wide-ranging credit card fraud

rand Island police Tuesday arrested a 31-year-old man who is suspected of prolific credit card fraud. Angel Martinez Coca, who lives in Grand Island, was arrested on 52 criminal counts at 9:45 a.m. at 3440 Old Highway 30. Thirty-eight of those counts involve firstdegree forgery. He will also be charged with nine counts of criminal possession of a financial transaction device. Many of the crimes, police say, are tied to a series of fraudulent credit card transactions that occurred between February and July of this year. Many of them involved compromised accounts in Central Nebraska. Martinez Coca “was taking compromised credit card information

and programming it onto credit card blanks,” said Grand Island Police Capt. Jim Duering. Police believe skimmers were used on gas pumps. After the information was programmed onto credit card blanks, they were used to make unlawful purchases. Most of those purchases were made in Grand Island, Duering said. But the accounts were compromised in a host of communities, including Kearney, Lincoln, Central City and Clarks. The 52 charges include two counts each of shoplifting and aiding and abetting a felony. Martinez Coca also had a warrant for his arrest from Sarpy County for unauthorized use of a financial transaction device.

Police aren’t sure if Martinez Coca used the skimmer “or if he was getting that information from someone else,” Duering said. As of Wednesday morning, Martinez Coca had yet to make a court appearance. Compiling 52 charges involves a lot of paperwork, Duering said. Working in cooperation with police, many Grand Island businesses have taken steps to prevent credit card fraud. Grand Island gas stations have put seals on their gas pumps “so that it’s hard to attach skimmers,” Duering said PUBLISHED/ THE GRAND ISLAND INDEPENDENT/ BY JEFF BAHR

n alert member of the public helped Grand Island Police officers apprehend a burglar Friday they say had been breaking into storage units at Sixth and Plum streets. Police arrested Joshua R. Lawver, 36, of Grand Island for attempted burglary and possession of burglar’s tools after suspicious activity was reported at the area storage units, said Capt. Jim Duering of the Grand Island Police Department. “Burglaries have been one of our biggest issues for the last couple of months,” Duering said. There were four burglaries or attempted burglaries reported over the weekend in Grand Island. He said that represented a slower weekend compared to the rash of burglaries police have had to deal with over the last several months. Duering said storage unit burglaries, like the one for which Lawver was arrested, have “been a big issue” for the Police Department. “We ask for the public to report suspicious activities on storage units and that is exactly what led us to catch him in the act,” he said. Duering said that Lawver was already out on bond for previous burglary and stolen property incidents. He said Lawver was arrested for burglary on Sept. 6, then was

arrested for another burglary on Sept. 28, and was arrested on Oct. 4 after a traffic stop during which he was found to be in possession of stolen items. “We have seen an increase in these types of burglaries (storage units), especially in the last couple of weeks,” Duering said. He said the burglars are usually after “pretty much anything they can get their hands on that they think is of value that they can either sell or trade. There is no rhyme or reason for what has been taken.”

that he needed,” he said. “I’m not so sure that he is overly concerned about being spotted or that there is a lot of deference available to him. He was pretty brazen.”

Duering said the method of entry in burglarizing storage units has varied. “Some have used a car to push the doors in and like in this case (involving Lawver), they were using tools to pry on the doors because probably we had his car in our impound yard at the time of this event because of his previous arrest,” he said. Duering said Lawver is “responsible for multiple burglary type crimes over recent history.” The storage units at Sixth and Plum streets, though it’s not a major thoroughfare, are still visible because they are only two blocks from Fourth Street. In addition, the attempted burglary took place at 8 a.m. and in “broad daylight,” Duering said. “He rode up on his bicycle with the tools

“We are still investigating his possible involvement in other burglaries,” Duering said.

But Duering said Lawver’s attempted burglary of the storage unit was “atypical” of the recent rash of storage unit break-ins. Another common denominator with these crimes, he said, has been that the people doing the burglaries are in need of some quick cash for their substance abuse habits.

The Police Department is asking the public to report suspicious activities, as those that led to Lawver’s arrest. “Anyone who has or rents a storage unit should probably check their unit, time permitting,” Duering said. “Usually the case with storage unit burglaries is that there will be a rash of them but the reports will be spread out because people do not go to their storage unit every day and don’t discover that something was broken into or missing in a timely manner.” PUBLISHED /The Grand Island Independent / By Robert Pore

The Grand Island Independent / By Bob HamarTraducción Norma MarquezBuenos Dias Nebraska
