Sifu Vincent Lyn is the heir of a style with deep roots in the history of Kung Fu: the Ling Gar Kung Fu, an art which combines internal and external principles. Sifu Lyn is a man of great talents: besides being and expert master of Martial Arts and Oriental Medicine, in addition he is also an exceptional musician, a sportsman and an actor. Out of over 300 different Chinese Kung Fu styles, only three of them are considered really "internal" ones: Hsing I Chuan, Pa Kua Chang and Tai Chi Chuan. All other Kung Fu systems are considered external and stem from the teachings of Da Mo (Bodhidharma) and the Shaolin tradition. The first part of the video is dedicated to Tai Chi Chuan, of which Sifu Lyn shows two forms of different internal styles: "Harness the Wind", belonging to the family style Tai Chi Ling Gar, which dates back 650 years, and "Mountain Form", originally from Wudang Temple, in Hubei Province of northern China. The second part focuses on the external styles of Chinese Martial Arts, and shows two other forms: an extremely advanced Ling Gar Kung Fu external form, with about 100 movements, and the so called 18 Lohan form, originating from the Shaolin Temple in northern China, with 18 separate moves, and a total of 36 moves. In this DVD, Master Giuseppe Vuovolo, from the non-profit association "Knights of Honor and Humility" (associazione "Cavalieri d'Onore e Umiltà") founded by himself, will introduce us to a little-known world: that of the so-called Popular Arts of the Italian tradition, more precisely those of southern Italy (Manfredonia, Puglia). Together with his students, you will have the opportunity to see specific warm-up and combat techniques with various weapons that will be displayed, from a knife to a billhook knife, from a billhook knife to a razor and even a cane. There is also no shortage of empty hand techniques, rare enough to be found in other schools of popular arts. You will have the opportunity to study the application of techniques both individually and in pairs, both in self-defense and in real combat demonstrations with each individual weapon presented. Good viewing for all fans!

“Whoever seeks to dominate the world and improve it, is heading for failure. The world is so sacred and vast that it cannot be dominated. Whoever dominates it makes it worse, whoever has it loses it.” Lao Tse “Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.” Franklin P. Jones

ude... It's you yourself who got into this! That’s what I tell myself every time I try to untangle the web of some mess and I feel lost. We throw ourselves into doing things, always hoping to improve, or because we think we will gain some advantage from it. Curiosity killed the cat... According to Lao Tse, hope for improvement is only an illusion, but how to get rid of it? When Hitler invaded Poland, loaded with his own reasons as he was, he surely thought that he was doing the best thing in the world. Classics say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We are in a culture of optimism and of the “you better try, otherwise how do you know you don’t like it?” Hey, man, there’s a whole lot of things I don’t need, and I don’t want to try! We are so imbued with our vital greed, looking at ourselves in the false mirrors of the networks and the advertising of a dreamy world, that we forget that life is 90% frustration and hopefully 10% achievement... Before we had guides of wisdom based on the experience of those who had preceded us, but we decided to open Pandora’s box and get rid of the wise, to start guiding ourselves by universal "truths" admitted by the whole world. Long live the illustration! Science will save us! Objective truth has arrived! But what about the prudent advice of the old-timers, the one who says: “Maybe… or maybe not… who knows?” Relativizing is trendy now, but not that way. Current fashion is to crawl in the chiaroscuro, in the gray areas, to surrender to the doubt and dissuade us from any hope of lucidity; we are thus much more manageable... And certainly a hell of a lot more idiot!

“We seek happiness in external goods, in riches, and consumerism is the present form of the ultimate good. But the figure of the satisfied consumer is illusory: the consumer is never satisfied, is insatiable and therefore not happy. We can look for happiness in triumph, in fame, in honors. But is not all that but pure vanity, ultimately, nothing or almost nothing?” José Luis López Aranguren

Third age was first cornered and then rendered useless by retirement. “Youth is cool!” “Old stuff sucks!”, the 60s opened the doors of that boastful and arrogant hedonism: “We'll do it much better!” “These know nothing!” … and to the cry of “Long live modernity!” we decided to ignore the experience of our elders. The acceleration of history is a fait accompli from which we are all debtors. No one is spared here. Time is compressed and speeded up, and therefore everything from the day before yesterday is already a bit slow, worn out, old and useless. The acceleration of history is a fait accompli from which we are all debtors. No one is spared here. Time is compressed and speeded up, and therefore everything from the day before yesterday is already unfashionable, worn out, old and useless. But these are the cards we’ve been given in the dealt, these are the times in which we must live, and for that very reason, they’re the best we’ll ever have. My generation lived through the AIDS pandemic in its youth, and now, at the end, when we get older, we get the coronavirus pandemic... What an obstacle course! As Woody Allen says "God hides a variety of dirty tricks, in the heavenly sleeve of his white robe." My generation lived through the AIDS pandemic in its youth, and to top it all off, now that we're getting older we get the coronavirus pandemic... What an obstacle course! As Woody Allen says: “God hides a variety of dirty tricks, in the heavenly sleeve of His white robe.” In my teens, “the horse” (the most popular street name of heroin in Spain) took a few of my peers, and those of us who saved ourselves from it, either because we were lucky, or because we hated needles and loved plain life

“We are so imbued with our vital greed, looking at ourselves in the false mirrors of the networks and the advertisements of a dreamy world, that we forget that life is 90% frustration and, hopefully, 10% achievement.”

“There's no doubt that we all get into a lot of trouble, but living is like that. And perhaps you are wrong more times than you are right ... But if you are cut out to be a "learner," you can always correct, apologize if necessary, and give thanks.” and everything it involved (especially the sex section!), we came face to face with “that” disease... Yes, the one you’re thinking of, which is precisely... sexually transmitted! I remember that at that time, I traveled to Brazil, my family had a bookstore there; in the middle of Rio de Janeiro there was a huge graffito that read: “O melhor SIDA do MUNDO!” (The best AIDS in the world). I find - I don’t know if it has always been so - that my generation was the last to receive a more or less wellstructured education. No, I don’t want to cling to the old "any past time was better", I’m more supportive of Les Luthiers' version: “Any past time was... previous”, but when I hang out with my old classmates, and we have interesting and deep conversations, which are neither soccer nor any of the many other common topics I hear people talk about today, I wonder in amazement: Are we abnormal? Or perhaps we were abducted by extraterrestrials and released into another parallel universe? It seems that the more mass media we have, the worse we express ourselves, and certainly we communicate much worse. Some Masters question my way of writing these editorials: "No one is going to understand you" they say -. "What you're saying there is just for minorities!" - they claim. Good grief! I’m sorry, gentlemen! I don’t know any other way to do it, and I’m not getting off my position so that some people understand me; if they

cannot reach up there, let them take a ladder! Else, what should I do with the seven years of Latin, classical Greek and philosophy that I had to swallow in my student days? Our teachers trained us to think, not just to memorize data; they taught us that the head is more than just an appendix to put on a hat on with the brim backwards. Year after year, we were taught that effort was necessary to pass the grade, and if we didn’t get through it, we had to repeat the course. We should have been very traumatized by it, however, for all my companions, as for myself, things haven't gone so badly in this life, after all. Everything we can do - and we do! - is to thank these Masters for their commitment and lucidity. Yes; there's no doubt that we all get into a lot of trouble, but living is like that. And perhaps you are wrong more times than you are right ... But if you are cut out to be a "learner," you can always correct, apologize if necessary, and give thanks Nobody is born knowing, and no matter how much you might live, you’ll never get to know everything. You must learn to settle for remaining in the middle point of what you are capable ... without quitting to try. As Groucho pointed out, "Getting older is no problem. You just have to live long enough". Let us not belittle experience: seniority, in life as in the military, is a degree.

Kung Fu The Fighting Theory of Southern Mantis The rar e mar tial ar t of Jook Lum Southern Mantis (JLSM 竹林螳螂派) has seldom been explored well in writing, and is taught by only a handful of people worldwide. My name is Sapir Tal, and I am one of the lineage sifus in this system. In recent years, I have decided t o b r i n g t h e a r t t o t h e p u b l i c ’s attention, and share its secrets worldwide. In this article, many of the cor e fighting theories of our style shall be revealed. JLSM does not view a fight as a ‘problem to solve’ with ‘fixed solutions’. It is a concept-based art, which features broad tactics and strategies for dealing with any combative threat. There are many stepping methods and stances taught, but the most common one used in fighting is the Sei Gok Bo 四角步 – Four Corner Step. This method of standing ‘on the four corners of a rectangle’, is intended to enable the practitioner to remain stable, while transitioning between the ‘Four Gates’. Text: Sifu Sapir Tal Studio Photos: © Alfredo Tucci

Kung Fu his central strategy of JLSM, is to be like an agile tank. The heavy and stable rectangular shape of the tank is the structure of Sei Gok Bo. But atop that solid frame there is a flexible turret, which can rotate in any direction. As the ‘Mantis Tank’ moves into a superior position in fighting, the ‘turret upper body’ rotates into one of four gates – Center Gate, Left Gate, Right Gate or Rear Gate. What does this mean, in practical terms? The JLSM fighter saves himself the need of chasing the opponent, by being able to rotate his body towards the opponent without necessarily having to move his feet. More importantly, any of the art’s techniques can be used in any of the Four Gates. This makes the JLSM fighter more adaptable and quicker to react to threats, as the opponent has to move around him which takes time, while he only has to slightly rotate his body relative to the circumstances. Additionally, at each of the Four Gates, the JLSM fighter can adjust himself at three different heights (lower, middle and upper), and with varying weight shifts. Whether leaning his weight forward to reach, sitting back to absorb, or maintaining a 50-50 weight balance ratio, any technique may be used at any of these positions. The JLSM fighter cares little whether the opponent uses left or right attacks. What matters is at which gate he is – Center, Left, Right, Middle, Upper or Lower. Although the art can employ most techniques at each of these, the various forms teach practitioners to specialize in some methods which are commonly more effective for any particular angle. You may ask, what makes the ‘mantis tank’ so stable and powerful? The answer in part, are the mechanisms of its Sun Yen 身形 (Body Posture): Ma Bo 馬步, Dip Gwat 疊骨, Dew Tong 吊膛 and Sau Kao Bui 筲箕背. Ma Bo means ‘Horse Step’. It refers to correct foot and leg alignment, as in Sei Gok Bo and Som Gok Bo. Additionally, in JLSM, practitioners can ‘squeeze’ the rooted structure of the larger Horse Step of other arts, into a much tighter frame. Dip Gwat means ‘to fold the bones’, referring to how one twists and coils the skeleton to generate power, and brings the bones together, especially the ribcage, to protect the internal organs. Dew Tong and Sao Kai Bui mean ‘to suspend the chest’ and ‘Round Basket Back’. They refer to the slight rounding and stretching of the torso, in a way which enables the body structure to transfer energy in a superior manner from the ground into the opponent, and from the opponent’s attacks into the ground.

Kung Fu

In the pictures: Myself, handling kicking attacks at the middle-right gate. At the Four Gates various combative principles are employed, appropriate to the situation. Among these are the following, which could also be used in combination with one-another: Floating (Fau 浮) – being able to bounce the opponent’s energy off your body without harm to yourself. Sinking (Cam 沉) – pulling oneself down to generate energy which strikes or pulls the opponent towards the floor. Spitting (Tou 吐) – unexpectedly generating a powerful force from a short distance which surprises the opponent like a spit in the face. Swallowing (Tan 吞) – absorbing the opponent towards your center, making him lose balance and control and falling into your technique. Sticking (Chi 黐) – attaching oneself to the opponent as if you were a flexible and slimy octopus. Borrowing (Ze 借) – taking the opponent’s energy into your own body in order to create momentum for your own next movement. Grabbing (Na 㧱) – taking hold of the opponent’s limbs, and often his skin or clothing in order to immobilize or move him around. Seizing (Kam 擒) – grabbing the opponent’s structure in a way which immobilizes him in place, or allows to more easily break his bones. Undermining three locations – the art uniquely specializes in hitting three points on the opponent’s body at the same time, completely overwhelming his structure. In the picture: My late teacher, the honorable Grand-Master Henry Poo Yee, disciple of grandmaster Lam Sang. He is demonstrating the characteristic special skill of the art, of striking at three different points at the same time. Photographed circa 2003. Since the JLSM fighter prefers to engage from close distances, and to move between the gates rather than dance around, he wishes to have the ability to lure the opponent to draw him near. This is often achieved by the open-arm posture of Tan Sau 攤手 (‘Spreading Hands’). Though the arms are spread wide, the elbows keep near the body,

Kung Fu protecting it. The opponent is misled to perceive the JLSM fighter’s posture as vulnerable, and attack his center. This is when the JLSM fighter would take advance of the situation, often by closing his structure unto the Zung Mon Sau 中門手 (‘Center Gate Hands’). The art thus uses its centerline like bait, while being in control of it at all times. In the picture: Myself, with my late Sifu in the background. The art looks open, but is actually closed tight. Photographed circa 2001. The elbows are in their strongest position when touching the body, or as the triceps lean against the torso. However, the majority of martial artists are not accustomed to such positions and angles, and feel uncomfortable holding them. The JLSM fighter is specifically trained to not only be at ease in such positions and angles, but also be able to issue great power from them. The benefit is not only in terms of a stronger structure, but also in a near-constant protection of the centerline. Many traditional martial artists know that the most rooted stances are those with the feet pointing inward. However, such steps are commonly not very useful for actual fighting. In JLSM Southern Mantis, power-training exercises utilize the triangular Som Gok Bo 三角步 (‘Three Corner Step’), as means of learning strong rooting, which is later translated and incorporated into Sei Gok Bo 四角步 (‘Four Corner Step’), and the other steps and stances. In the picture: Myself, demonstrating Som Gok Bo, also called ‘Chup Bin Bo’ (Whip-Insertion Step). Photographed circa 2001. An additional method, complimentary to the art’s rooting, is that the body-structure is typically slightly forward-leaning. The majority of martial artists would lose their balance if they lean forward, or could be pulled easily. But the JLSM fighter is trained to not only have rooted strength at such positions, but also use the arch to put greater pressure and weight unto the opponent. When the body is rooted, JLSM is then able to push against the ground with great efficiency, and generate formidable strikes. The art features numerous ways of striking the opponent, including with: a regular fist, an empty fist (held loosely in a special way), the

phoenix-eye fist (striking with the knuckle of the index finger), the double-phoenix fist (two-knuckles strike), open palm, tightened palm, back of the palm, tips of fingers, elbow, knee, shoulder, and more. The strikes commonly target acupuncture points, and the study of how to use Traditional Chinese Medicine combatively is among the advanced training topics included in the curriculum. The techniques applied with such strikes and movements are often vicious and lethal. Dislocating the neck or the Adam’s Apple, gouging out an eye, targeting the testicles, pulling out a clavicle, breaking knees and crushing fingers, are among these cruel methods. In the picture: Myself, demonstrating movement for dislocating the neck and striking the gonads at the same time. Photographed circa 1999. In striking, the system also frequently attacks the opponent’s limbs. A common strategy is to first nullify the arms or legs of the opponent by injuring them, before moving on to attack the torso. Similar to Xing Yi Quan, Pak Mei Pai and Wing Chun, this art has little in the way of ‘defense’, and all protective movements are in fact attacks in disguise. Whilst fighting, JLSM deals with three timings and three distances. Normal fighting timing is when you meet the opponent

Kung Fu “Another aspect of timing in JLSM, is that it ‘loads’ power and tension for the second and subsequent attack already when applying the first.”

as he arrives. But JLSM would prefer to issue an attack in advance, as soon as the opponent’s intention to move is detected. That is, unless one is baiting the opponent to enter, in which case the JLSM may, like a real-life mantis, allow the opponent’s limbs to draw very near to his body, before reacting. The latter is the method of ‘delayed timing’ – reacting supposedly late, in order to yield a better outcome. It is an advanced combative skill. JLSM fights from very close distances. “Long” distance would be a full punch’s length. Medium distance, that of an elbow or a forearm. Short distance, being even closer to the opponent than that. The JLSM fighter would not attempt to fight from long distances, but would rather draw nearer to the opponent, or lure him to approach. It is a system which assumes dealing with real-life violence, circumstances where people have the intention to hurt one another, and tend to clash head-on, rather than running around and evading one another. Where an opponent’s kick is delivered from far away, the JLSM fighter would consider his reaction based on the system’s perception of distance to himself, and would not try reaching far in mimicking the adversary.

Another aspect of timing in JLSM, is that it ‘loads’ power and tension for the second and subsequent attack already when applying the first. The opponent can often sense this and becomes terrified, feeling that the JLSM fighter’s intent is ahead of his. Such a skill is better experienced hands-on than described in text, which is all the more reason for readers to do their best to meet with Master Sapir in-person, if they can. While grappling-oriented martial arts tend to feel comfortable at close-distances, striking-based styles commonly have difficulties at such ranges. There are two reasons for this. Primarily, the difficulty in handling the grappling threat, and secondly, the problem of generating enough power for striking from a close distance. Master Sapir’s JLSM has solutions for both these problems. Although it is defined as a ‘striking style’, JLSM does have a strong grappling component, which is commonly practiced through its version of ‘sticky hands’ drills. The difference from traditional grappling is, that JLSM seldom grapples for the purpose of flowing into a joint-lock, a choke, a takedown or a throw. Instead, the arts’ sticky hands are meant to either nullify the grappling attempts of the opponent, or to set the opponent up to be struck in a better way.

As for the short distance, JLSM solves that problem by being able to generate what are called the ‘short powers’ (Cyun Ging). The body is tensed like a coiled spring with special alignments and internal energetic methods, and then releases the immense tension into a precise blow in an instant. This allows the skilled JLSM fighter to release strikes even from a distance of less than an inch, making his striking art effective even at grappling ranges. The short powers are part of a larger array of ‘explosive powers’ (Fat Ging) which one develops by training in this system. In the picture: My late Sifu, Grand-Master Henry Poo Yee, demonstrating the art’s capacity to strike from a very short distance. Upon touching a seasoned JLSM fighter, the feeling might be quite strange. Initially, he may be feel like hard and angular steel. But when moving across one’s limbs, he might be perceived like a soft cloud. The art thrives on this dichotomy between Yin and Yang, Soft and Hard, and employs it to confuse and control opponents. One hand might be hard and pointy, while the other soft and round, all at the same time. In accepting the opponent to the inside, the JLSM fighter could operate

like a pile of goose feathers, and then immediately switched to a structure which is firm and solid like an oak. The ability to transition smoothly and quickly between hard and soft, as well as being able to generate formidable short powers, are both derived from the art’s Chi Kung. It is a complex form of movements which, if taught to laypeople, is very beneficial for the cure and prevention of many illnesses. But for the JLSM fighters, it is also a method which teaches them how to finely control the Qi in their bodies, and use it combatively. The Chi Kung is easy and relaxing to practice, but may take over a decade of daily practice to master. The practice of Chi Kung is very important in order to balance the natural aggression of the style, preserve one’s health, and calm one’s mind. Everything described thus-far is not limited to the stand-up fighting game. JLSM has traditionally been able to modify its methods and skills for effective ground-fighting, too. I had a breadth of combative experience and training with foremost ground-grapplers, including several Brazilian Jujutsu black-belts, and I had the tools for ‘dealing with them on their own turf’. One of my closest friends is BJJ black belt Avi Nardia Sensei (under the Machado family), and we taught one-another a great deal over the decades. In the picture: Jook Lum is just as effective on the ground. Photographed circa 2005. In JLSM’s fighting theory however, there are not solely the combative methods. I am personally of the opinion that the most crucial component to the art’s success is studying, training and working as a community. My school in Israel is indeed just that – a happy and amiable commune of like-minded people dedicated to their practice. Our mutual support has increased our skill collectively over the decades. Myself and my students meet at one-another’s’ holiday

celebrations, weddings and even at funerals. I have had folks who came to me as kids, whose children I now teach. In that sense, our teachings reach far beyond the operation of a ‘sports club’. For me, values such as honour, loyalty, self-confidence, self-esteem, and the building of a healthy fellowship, are all very important. I wish to further transmit this sacred tradition, and I am always on the lookout for new and aspiring worthy students to join my quest and our journey. If you too are a lover of the traditional martial arts and would like to learn a fascinating and effective ancient style, then show courage and reach out – our doors are open. Master Sapir Tal teaches in his school in Israel, as well as in various seminars internationally, on a regular basis. In recent times, Master Sapir has been a lead fightchoreographer for several notable action-drama television series, including one by Netflix. Trips follow one another ... My last two articles have taken you people through the amazing cities of Ashdod, Tel Aviv and Jaffa. Today I will take you to discover a must-see place: I’m referring to the Wingate Institute, located between Tel Aviv and Netanya.

The Wingate Institute The National Institute for Sports Excellence is located on a dynamic campus that extends over some 120 acres, between Tel Aviv and Netanya by the sea. On the same spot is Bahad 8, which is the military school or instruction center for the soldiers' physical conditioning and hand-to-hand combat training. The Wingate Institute was inaugurated in 1957 as Israel's National Center for Physical Education and Sports and is named after Major General Orde Charles Wingate, known as “The Friend”. At that time, the State of Israel concentrated educational, professional and scientific resources in the Institute for the development of physical education, “sport for everyone”, and elite sport as a means of social and physical rehabilitation.

The National Institute for Sport Excellence… In 2018, with the implementation of the “Wingate Law”, the Wingate Institute was designated as a Crown corporation under the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sport, and its name was changed to “National Institute for Sport Excellence”. Source: http://www.jewishsports.net/wingate

My career within the Institute… A few years ago, the Wingate Institute gave foreigners the opportunity to follow different methodological training for the teaching of Krav Maga. For me it represented an important opportunity that I wouldn’t let go. Its different training courses allowed me, on the one hand, to meet high quality graduate teachers (they will be recognized), and get to know Krav Maga practitioners and instructors from all walks of life. Wealth concentrated in one place.

Acclimatizing yourself to the conditions... As time on site was limited and precious, you had to adapt relatively quickly so as not to suffer every passing hour. Food, heat, humidity, sustained classes ... destabilized more than one! It is true that the fact of having been a serving member of the military helped me in part not to be pushed too hard by all these changes. Over time, cruising speed was set in, and it allowed me throughout the various training courses to fully appreciate every minute of learning from exceptional people. One thing leading to another, after several years, I am holder of the titles Wingate Instructor, Senior Instructor and Coach in Krav Maga. While diplomas attest to having passed exams, an added value has crept in, a relationship of mutual friendship with people of great value. The different levels that I climbed gave me other opportunities, no less important. In fact, after spending many hours on campus, I found myself on the team of evaluators to analyze future instructors from around the world. A big recognition from the Israeli instructors.

50 years of the Institute ... A huge campus-wide sports festival to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Each event has its own surprise! Since I am not Israeli, I am on the list of instructors hired to teach!

Anecdote… In the multisport hall, sitting on a bench, I mentally prepare myself for this exceptional event. A full day dedicated to the practice and teaching of Krav Maga. Instructors go passing by in front of me to chain their lessons. Pressure is on, the atmosphere feels really heavy. When I read the instructors passage order I find that the name of the Israeli instructor who teaches just before me, is unknown to me. The pressure rises still a notch knowing that in this list there are Israeli Instructors coming from the civil life, the army and elsewhere ... After the lunch break, a dark-skinned man approaches me, and in a calm and paused voice kindly asks me if I am Stéphane Denis. I politely get up from the bench and confirm him that he is talking to the right person. In turn, he introduces himself as Avi Nardia. Now I have a face of the person who teaches just before me. Introductions made, he tells me that he has analyzed some of my videos and shares his opinion on my work with me. Conversely, I know absolutely nothing about him! Pressure keeps increasing. He apologizes to me because he has to prepare his material for his lesson and ends our discussion with "I will be present and participate in your lesson ... see you later". No need to draw you a picture of the pressure!!! Back seated on my bench, I digest this moment that came out of nowhere.

The long-awaited moment ... Avi's class begins. Eager to discover his potential, I obviously participate in this session with my friend Sapir Tal (the creator of Spikey) as a partner. After having placed us in two well differentiated rows, the first show of him begins, his talent is evident. And yes, I mean TALENT. He exhibits a serenity in his work

that is simply enviable. At this moment I realize that we are in front of a professional. I am impressed. For those who know me, it is very rare that this terms come out of my mouth.

The moment of truth… Time passes so fast that it’s my turn to face the groups in order to teach some principles of Krav Maga. A quick look on my part to see if Avi is in the group… He is present and in good company, because his work partner is none other than the specialist Shlomy Katz. Participants get involved without counting on the first movement presented. Everything is going well, I truly feel in my element. Avi kindly requests my attention ... the pressure is building! To my surprise, he asks me to correct him on the move I just explained. More than surprised, I ask him if he and his friend Shlomy are pulling my leg ... His demand is very serious; they really want to obtain all the necessary elements to master this technique. Of course, it’s with great satisfaction that I give him the requested details. I

walk away feeling that I have done my job to the best of my ability, that it’s actually my passion. It’s time to greet the whole group, and thank them for their attention. At the gala evening at the end of the day, Avi will come back to me to give me his thoughts on the course I had the opportunity to teach. A more than pleasant moment which gave birth to a sincere friendship that has earned us to get along and always see each other in a caring atmosphere. Avi’s words echoed and the next day I received congratulations from other outstanding teachers, Abi Morya & Guy Mor. One of the richest meetings in which I’ve had the opportunity to experience… The power of passion! My passion has taken me for nearly three decades to visit, travel and meet exceptional personalities. All these human and material discoveries constitute the substrate which pushes me to continue to prospect, to discover and to share. Making the choice to evolve with the International Organization I.M.A.D.S is the guarantee of enjoying professional and passionate supervision, throughout your career. “Quality is not an act, it’s a habit.”

The Amazon Raid Today, we would like to promote and support a sportive, human and solidary adventure. Our good friend, Margo Brunet and her teammate Marie Manchon have decided to take up the “Amazon raid” challenge, an all women and 100% solidary multisport raid: 6 days of sportive challenges taking place in Thailand in November 2021. Together, they are the “Raides de sports” (mad about sport in French): we’ve asked them a few questions!

- Could you briefly introduce yourselves? Marie – 60yo, certified sport coach, I’m a true adventurer with iron will, I never give up! I love challenging races, I burst with energy, and people say I am sensitive and benevolent. Margo – 30yo, sport trainer, martial art instructor (Pencak Silat), I’m a pacific warrior with unbreakable determination. With me, it’s all or nothing! My energy is contagious, and one thing I love most is helping people (re)gain selfconfidence.

- What brought you together as a team? Sport changed our lives at critical junctures: we therefore decided to dedicate our lives to pass on all this positive stuff that sports in general and martial arts in particular have brought us: - Self confidence - Surpassing your own limits - Sense of effort and taste for hard work - Sense of achievement and fulfillment

Tell us more about the Raid as a sports challenge The Amazon Raid is most and foremost a demanding sport challenge: 300 “amazons” challenging each other at the break of dawn over 6 days in various sport disciplines: trail, mountain bike, canoeing, archery and “surprise challenges”, all ranging from 10 to 50km per stage. This raid takes place in full immersion in wilderness, in some of the most remote and untouched spots on the planet

Why did you decide to take part? We decided to go for it so as to embody and be true to our core values but also to get out of our comfort zone and push our own boundaries. The “solidarity” dimension has come as an additional motivation: throwing our energy to the benefit of a cause that we hold dear to our heart will help us “holding up” in times of rough and doubt. We also wish to gather as many people as possible to join us in this challenge.

What causes did you decide to support? It was clear to us from start that we needed to associate ourselves and our challenge to partners and associations that promote access to sport for those who don’t naturally have it. It is one of our core beliefs that sport is vital to life, that is can change lives and that it should thus be accessible to ALL. We have therefore chosen to support 2 associations that work tirelessly to facilitate social integration of vulnerable people and use sport as a vector of empowerment.

The first association – Phenix – enables people with mental disabilities to get access to sports, offering them physical activities adapted to their situation in the presence of specially trained educators. The second association – « Le Relais des Possibles » (the Realm of Possibles) – welcomes women with extremely challenging life journeys, often victims of domestic violence and with very young children or infants. By sheltering them, the lodge offers them a safe environment, helps them to rebuild themselves and gives them a chance to re-integrate in social life. Sport is a vital way to rebuild self-respect and self-confidence.

Why these 2 associations, specifically ? Phenix This cause hit a sensitive point with us as we realised that people with mental disabilities or suffering from mental disorders are the “forgotten ones” when it comes to accessing sport: nothing is there for them. They are, in fact, excluded from any form of supervised physical activities, mostly since there is a dramatic lack of properly trained professionals to supervise them. Yet, sport is a vital lifeblood, and its benefits have been proven again and again: social integration, self-confidence, self-esteem, control of your own body, ability to focus, mental and physical balance… We believe that everybody should have a chance to practise! And when Mathis, one of Phenix members, says “me I love football, because it helps me to develop myself”, well…it’s all there…, you can’t possibly stay aloof.

“6 days of sportive challenges taking place in Thailand in November 2021.”

Le Relais des Possibles As women, the plight of those hosted at the « Relais » touched us deeply. Broken by unfathomable life’s jour ney, marked by profound violence, they shared with us their genuine need to re-appropriate their own body, and their deep desire to gain some self-esteem back through sports. This vital surge touched us deeply and urged us to help them access sports. These women also expressed their desire to get involved with Phenix: they volunteered to participate in sporting outing, and even to join the fine Phenix football team! In addition to that, their involvement in the project itself, tur ns into a social integration opportunity for them. A win-win scenario!

Who are your godparents? 2 high-level athletes and Olympic champions were touched by this project, and agreed to support us and to get involved: Muriel Hurtis – track and field world’s champion (200m and 4*100m relay) decided to get personally involved by our side, most specifically with both associations, offering to organise and supervise specific training sessions, and allowing us to use her image and endorsement for the project. Florent Lacasse – ex world’s class track & field mid-range athlete (800m) also expressed his desire to stand by our side, and specifically offered to train us for the running trials of the raid, as well as extending an open invitation for members of both associations to join us for training sessions.

Do you have other partners? Yes, several sports clubs, sensitive to our project and causes offered to partner up with us! The Kayak and canoe club in Vinon/Verdon, a France kayak champions’ nest, gave us two

licences and access to their training sessions, as well as, and most precious, feedback and tips from their experienced trainers. The archery club in Aix-en-Provence (Premiere compagnie de tir a l’arc) offered us as well to train us free of charge. The association Animation et Culture à Eguilles, where we both coach and train, became one of our first financial sponsor. Bastien Dupuy, photograph and video producer, who fell in love with the project, has offered to shoot several videos introducing the project as well as to produce photos and videos communication material, all free of charge. The cycling store Giant Aix-enProvence also sponsored us by generously equipping us for our mountain biking trainings: full outfits, helmets, biking gloves, camelbaks, knee & elbow protections, repairing kits… From the bottom of our hearts, we thank every partner of ours, for their generosity that helps us make this project a reality and grow it further day after day.

So, what do you need now? Let’s go straight to the point: we now need financial support. Our goal is to collect at least 20,000 Euros, half of it to finance our participation to the raid, the other half to secure an efficient level of support to the causes detailed above. We do hope to raise a lot more: each and every additional contribution will allow us to have a greater impact on Phenix and Le Relais des Possibles. We also need communication and exposure for the project, so please join us on social media, Facebook & Instagram « Raides de sport », and don’t hesitate to interact with our posts and share the link to our website (www.raidesdesport.com) and of course…to check our crowdfunding platform: (www.leetchi.com/c/raidesdesport). Every little bit helps to make this project a reality! If you are touched by this project, grounded in our core values of human solidarity and connection, feel free to support us, with your donations connecting at www.raidesdesport.com. There, you can find all relevant details, the link to support us financially and to sponsor the Raides de sport project. A big thanks to Marie et Margo for their passion and, for taking the time to talk to us about their project. David Delannoy

Who is the king on the battleground? Focus? Speed? Penetration? The latest buzzword is "quiet eye" or being able to maintain focus on a target for a fraction more than an average person. Anyone sane entering the battlefield would like to have an advantage over others who come to end their lives. The bad part of that is in trying to hide behind getting good at one drill or another and missing out on the big picture.

Text: Avi Nardia and Sharon Friedman

Shooting when it counts

e can try to be develop this buzzword quality, or we can do some pushups and run? What sounds more tactical and sexy? What is easier, practicing dry fire in different scenarios or shopping online for the next generation magazine holders? Such questions are hard to balance out but what building stands tall without a sound foundation. A drunk can try opening a random door with the key on their key fob. A sober person knows no key opens all doors. We must adjust our tactics according to where we are and what goals we set. A standing shooting position is great at a three gun competition but it will just get you holy (full of holes) if you try it against an enemy behind a stone barricade. Sight figures into this in the same way. Looking for a target at 600 meters

through a scope is miles apart from cutting corners in a building in the dark. Have you ever tried shooting from a bear hug? Compromised position and body alignment are great at lowering the hitting percentages and hardly anyone trains for it. Our progression in the gun range and in the open field is geared toward getting good at a fixed X. Positions are honed and targets are fixed. A monologue cannot stand in the land of dialogue. The open field with its brush, trees and organic landscape is very different than the sharp corners and 720 angle of threat urban environments present. A pan scan people get used to in an open field will not do in a basement of a drug dealer or gun runner. Our eyes and movement must adjust to distance, height, changing illumination and more. Only a full key fob of techniques and the calm mind to adjust between them may prevail. Tunnel vision is a natural occurrence. Nature plans to devote maximum resources to survival and once a choice is made or forced, it will funnel all resources toward it and compromise is not an option. Our part in training is to enhance how our senses are compiled into a scene in our mind and allow us to choose what mechanism goes into play. Mathematics provided us with the floating point. A point that changes not what we see but how we value it. A fixed point suits a static point or an ambush to a convoy on a road and hand shooting where you are the shooting platform deals with many more factors and one has to use the perceived theme of the arena to dynamically devote resources accordingly. In short, many call this Experience. Loving your job, means you come to work and play. Giving someone other than the ego, the reigns, allows us all to rise above the traps of repetition for sake of repetition and grants us a lifelong playground to see what works and what works better. The truth does not change. The truth is a direction, not a destination. Avi Nardial and Sharon Friedman 2021 Website https://vigilanceandtranquility.com Email sharon.friedman@yahoo.com

BUGEI & KAPAP Kankyoujutsu, Heaven and Hell! By Shidoshi Jordan Augusto and Kyoshi Fabián Garcia “Strategy is an economy of forces.” (Karl von Clausewitz) “Those who ignore geographical conditions mountains and forests - dangerous canyons, swamps and bogs - cannot lead the march of an army.” (Sun Tzu)

The vast majority of the events that marked the trajectory of man in his anthropological aspect, in particular with regard to Martial Arts, refer to envir onments as the gr eat protagonists of successes and failures, especially concerning power structures. The wor d Kankuoujutsu is made up of three Kanji: "環", Kan - ring, circle, link, wheel. "境", Kyou - border, border, region. "術" Jutsu - art, technique, skill, media, trick. Resources.

BUGEI & KAPAP ifferent authors of books or theories that point to strategy as the key point between victory and defeat in the arts of war, classify the environment, the terrain and the surroundings, as an important element to be observed. Kankyoujutsu refers to both internal and external environments. Today we will talk about external environments. Let's see: Sun Tzu, in his famous book "The Art of War" - written around 500 BC. - explains the different types of terrain and the advantages and disadvantages that are the result of positioning on these 6 types of terrain. However, a lot was modified and a lot was studied thereafter. Other authors and thinkers exerted a great influence on what we know today as strategy. Glancing slightly back, we can see that, despite the fundamental debates expressed by Machiavelli in his view of war (here I am referring to the book "The Prince", in the context of the struggle for Italian unification), the milestone in modern strategic thinking in the West is the great work of the Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, entitled “Vom Kriege” (“On War”). As every revolution in the field of thought related to strategy itself is a reflection / projection of the deep, revolutionary transformations that occur in the social reality where it was inserted, it's not difficult to understand that everything depends on the way we observe. Sun Tzu classified the lands as: Accessible, when it's easy to get around. Tortuous, when easy to get out, but hard to get in.

BUGEI & KAPAP Undecided, when it turns to be disadvantageous for both contenders. Tight, when narrow. Sinuous, when it's rough. Distant, when it's wide. However, we can classify it as Kankyoujutsu, or think that it had an influence when Sun Tzu even tells us how to behave in each of these areas: On accessible land: In order to gain an advantage over the enemy lines, take positions before the enemy, in the high and sunny part. In the tortuous: Simply avoid it, because although it’s possible to defeat the enemy “with a simple blow” in case he is not prepared, our army will be in danger if we do not win. In the undecided: The advantages that the enemy offers us must be rejected, since they are traps: "retreat, attract and then attack." In the tight: Occupy the whole place if you get there first; otherwise, do not follow the enemy, unless he doesn’t occupy it entirely. In the sinuous: If the enemy has not yet occupied the highest and sunniest place, it is the right thing to do, otherwise retreat and do not follow him.

BUGEI & KAPAP In the distant: It’s not favorable to fight or attack the enemy if his forces are equivalent. In the different materials that were offered to us when we studied the subject with Araki Sensei, he taught us that territories could be: Air and Earth Earth and Metal Wood and Air Air and Wood Fire and Air Fire and earth Fire and Metal When you fight in your own territory, you’re fighting in terrains of the “Air and Earth” element. When we advance a small distance within the enemy's territory, we are moving in the “Earth and Metal” element border territory. The "Wood and Air" territory presents an equal advantage for the troops on both sides. The communicating “Air and Wood” territory is one that allows easy access to both armies. The “Wood and Metal” territory borders on three other objectives, and it is of great importance to control it. The dangerous “Fire” territory is where an army that has already penetrated deep into the enemy field is located, and from which it's difficult to return. In the territory of “Fire and Earth”, moving is difficult and arduous, since you have to go through gorges, swamps or forests. It's a fenced lot with tight access and a winding exit. The “Fire and Metal” terrain is one in which an army has no choice but to fight. To talk more about this interesting topic, I leave you with the dear Master Kyoshi Fabián García. Enjoy it! Every battle is fought somewhere, you cannot separate the combat from the environment in which it occurs and whoever fails to visualize it in this way is doomed to failure. Studying the terrain is a specific subject that is included in every military curriculum.

It's essential to be able to carry out an analysis of the terrain, based on the specific aspects of interest such as: critical features, observation, shooting ranges, coverings, concealment and avenues of approach. Each of these aspects will be carefully analyzed during the planning process, to enable identification of the most advisable mode of action to adopt, in order to fulfill the assigned mission.

Military operations can basically be classified as offensive and defensive, and in both cases the ground plays a crucial role. If we look at it in detail, we will see that all territories or geographical environments have their own characteristics imposing the use of different logistics, techniques and tactics. That's the way Army, Navy and the Air Force

BUGEI & KAPAP

military maneuvers are planned, to operate by land, sea and air, including the intervention of the Naval Infantry or Marines, the shock troops responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations (mixed, naval and terrestrial), etc. But if we continue to analyze, we will see that even in each of these environments, the specialization to operate continues. If we consider ground combat, for example, we can find troops that specialize in mountain combat, mountain military operations, operation in urban areas, etc. Knowing the terrain becomes still more important when approaching the target area, which requires specific techniques and even the development of special combat units and tactics. This is how the airborne forces emerge, which will be parachuted over an area of operations, ranging from massive jumps with automatic opening parachutes to the sophisticated use of manual opening parachutes for HALO jumps (High Altitude Low Opening - High Altitude Jumps and Low Altitude Openings) and HAHO (High

Altitude High Opening - High Altitude Jumps and High Altitude Openings); or combat divers operating with open-circuit diving gear, that is, the conventional system in which the diver’s exhalation is expelled to the outside, or using sophisticated and dangerous closedcircuit diving gears in which the exhalation is recirculated by a filter that removes the CO2 before being breathed again. The breathable mixture is recycled again and again, and that's why they are called closed circuit. The latter are the ones used by the special forces in operations to install explosive mines, counter-mine devices, sabotage or clearing landing beaches. The ground also requires the use of different equipment and weapons. It's quite simple to understand that, depending on where they operate, be it in cold, bush, plain or desert areas, etc., troops must be equipped with specific clothing and footwear as well as different military accessories. Logistic support (refueling, replacements, evacuations, etc.) will also become seriously conditioned by the environment.

With regard to weapons, and just to cite a minor example, there is an intensive use of cutting weapons in combat in bushy and forest environments that is not common in any other geographical scenarios. This is because bush troops permanently use machetes or similar instruments for opening ways through the brush, construction of traps, preparation of shelters, etc. It’s obvious that these troops, skilled in using such weapons, can eventually use them also in combat. We should then analyze how the terrain influences the development of various Martial Arts and modern self-defense systems. Many of the modern Martial Arts, while maintaining their traditional base, have evolved markedly into combat sports. In them, ground is just the quadrilateral or combat area. Sports regulations condition those arts that are markedly overturned to this aspect, since they indicate what can and cannot be done, with which those "prohibited techniques" stop being transmitted and with the passage of time they tend to disappear. The characteristics of the combat areas is one of the aspects

BUGEI & KAPAP

that regulate those rules, establishing their surface, whether it has limits or not (nets, ropes, etc.), penalties for breaching established limits, etc. It’s quite obvious to see how the "ground" conditions the way of fighting, even giving rise to the appearing of special techniques and tactics using such space (work on the ropes in boxing, work against the cage in MMA, etc.), since the need to use the space in which the combat takes place remains a reality, even if that space arises artificially as a consequence of a sports regulation. There are also Martial Arts that "choose" a fighting space over others. For example, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has focused predominantly on fighting on the ground. Taekwondo, in its WTF version, has done something similar with leg techniques. From the point of view of my analysis, this is neither good nor bad, both disciplines have obtained wonderful results... And are the clear proof of the influence of the "terrain" in the fighting arts! The importance of proper use of the environment is indisputable in both the military and the sports field. Then it would be unwise to think of a real confrontation in which it was not. The difference between facing

BUGEI & KAPAP an aggressor in a confined space, and doing so is an open space is equivalent to the difference of facing an armed or unarmed aggressor. In each case, specific responses must be developed that not only solve the problem, but make proper use of any advantage that the terrain or the

situation grant us, because when life is at stake, there are no rules. This ultimate need is well covered by serious selfdefense systems and by what we have called "Practical Martial Arts" or PMA. This category we have added to

BUGEI & KAPAP

TMA (Traditional Martial) and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), goes beyond traditional or sporting disciplines, and conceptually bring together disciplines that focus only on the solution of the real problems of personal security to which people are exposed at present.

Kapap is an example of the disciplines included in this concept. Of Israeli origin and with a strong initial military influence, it’s currently taught to armed and security forces as well as civilians. It specifically focuses on developing the resources needed to resolve confrontations in confined

spaces (CQB Close Quarters Battle - Confrontation with or without weapons at very close range in urban spaces), employing every characteristic and circumstance of the environment as a weapon of defense. That is, to consider the environment not only as a circumstance but as a weapon at our disposal that we must learn to use. From Leonidas I in the battle of the Thermopylae, passing the classical thinkers of military strategy such as Sun Tzu, Marco Tulio Cicero, Hugo Grocio, Nicolas Machiavelli, or orthodox thinkers such as Henri Antoine de Jomini or Karl von Clausewitz to the present day, the tactical and strategic use of the terrain has been an unavoidable necessity.

Guro Ariel Flores Mosses introduces for the first time, how the fighting arts of Punong Guro Edgar G. Sulite of Lameco, GM Christopher N. Ricketts of Ilustrisimo and GM Conrad A. Manaois of Manaois Eskrima transitions to Firearms combat training. Guro Mosses shares the Importance of footwork such as Retirada Ilustrisimo, Retirada Caballero and Hakbang Paiwas and the effectiveness of footwork to create the distances and angles you need to pull off your arsenal. Long, Medium and Close range drills are shown to understand where to place yourself against an opponet(s). In addition, Guro Mosses covers the transitional techniques thru various firearm drills including LIVE FIRE exercises and for the first time on DVD shares the "MG-5" gun retention technique against any attacker attempting to seize your gun. These training drills are a must for any level or discipline and reveals the practicality of the Fighting Arts of the Philippines.

Avi Nardia begins a new series of works focused on CQB and high-risk situations. Some can be good shooters but bad fighters and it's preferable to develop the fighting spirit, not only teaching how to be good shooters, but also to handle aggressive situations to face reality and violence. To achieve these principles, acting with determination and confidence is essential. This first work explains in detail the regulations on the handling of the weapon, holstering and drawing the gun, ways of grasping the gun, loading, hand changes, changing magazines, one and two-handed work, covering and concealing yourself, shooting with precision while you are on the move, and shifting quickly and safely in conflict areas managing them proactively, not reactively. “Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active. In this work, Professor Maltese shows us the basic positions, defenses and fundamental attacks, guard exercises, blocking, crossing and counterattack in Redondo, the fifth, seventh, eighth and contras defenses, dynamic training and free combat exercises with protections. We will also see the bag training (blows, blockades and counterattacks) and a final chapter dedicated to Sword and Dagger, the Italian art in the Philippine Kali, executed with authentic weapons.

A BRAVE NEW WORLD? By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

The year 2020 will be remembered as the year that changed our lives forever. The world will never be the same. We will never return to “normal”, the way things used to be. You may recall the doomsday predictions about Y2K (the dreaded year 2000), or the Mayan Calendar cryptic prophesy about 2012; but nothing happened. Not even the horrific terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, changed much in our lives (beside making air travel much more of a hassle with long lines, intrusive searches and idiotic rules). This time it’s different, and it will have profound, long-lasting, and unpleasant consequences for every country in the world. could write almost an entire book about how the Wuhan virus has changed the lives of hundreds of millions of people (I am sure that, in years to come, several historians and researchers will do just that). I could write lengthy dissertations asking why this genetically engineered, weaponized virus with extreme lowmortality rate, was able to generate an unprecedented, global panic of such proportions that it has cowed almost every government on the planet into hysterical, dictatorial and unscientific reactions: shutting down the economies of entire nations, destroying millions of businesses, creating extremely high unemployment, soaring crime rates, closing down borders, restricting tourism and business travel, quarantining millions of healthy individuals, arresting people for walking on the beach or for getting a haircut, canceling classes at schools and universities, restricting social and family contacts (including church attendance, weddings, funerals, graduations, Holidays, etc.), closing theaters, pubs, restaurants, cinemas, gyms, museums, sport events, concerts and almost all form of entertainment venues. All decisions that have caused incalculable human suffering, but not to the political elites making them. (We may also ask: why, if those drastic measures were based on science and really effective, have they not worked?). But instead, I will limit my discussion to just how this surreal crisis has devastated and forever changed the Martial Arts industry. Yes, the object of our passion, the commitment of a lifetime, the pursuit of our chosen profession, our dedication to the martial disciplines, have all been affected, and permanently altered. Leading an International Martial Arts organization, I have seen first-hand how this crisis has impacted our industry. I am personally aware of over one hundred schools that have gone out of business and permanently closed their doors. In addition to dozens of our USA schools, some of our member schools in Spain, Italy, England, Germany, Australia, Canada and Mexico have also shut down. Others in Costa Rica, Panama, Dubai and Argentina are struggling to survive. Some in The Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand and Estonia are operating somewhat normally. So, what does the future hold for the Martial Arts?

It is said that “in crisis there is also opportunity”, and that “necessity is the mother of all inventions”, and, in the last several months, I have observed many Instructors demonstrating exceptional resilience and creativity to continue teaching and save their businesses from total ruin. With all the restrictions and limitations forced upon us, the first questions that need to be answered are: how do we stay connected to our students? And how do we remain relevant during this global disaster? Most of the Instructors who have managed to keep relatively active in these difficult times are those who have resorted to smart and innovative ways to use technology and have employed digital platforms and social media to retain many of their students. With the use of “Zoom” classes, YouTube, Skype, virtual classrooms, on-line seminars, and several other new ways to deliver our “product”, those savvy, modern Instructors are fighting their ultimate battle for survival, and leading the industry in a new direction. (Wouldn’t it actually be exciting to be able one day to train and test our Martial skills in a “Holodeck” environment like in the popular show “Star Trek”?). But this Brave New World of technological solutions is not without its own set of challenges. First there is the undeniable fact that MOST Martial Arts require a partner to be practiced properly and realistically. You cannot seriously expect to learn BJJ or Aikido by watching a DVD or a “virtual class” while sitting alone in your living room. In fact, over ten years ago, when our organization, Defensive Services International, launched its own distance learning program, called “DSI University”, we mandated that the first requirement to be accepted as a student was that you had to have a partner training with you. Combat Hapkido techniques, (and those of its various components, such as Tactical Pressure Points, Ground Survival, Disarming of Weapons, The Cane, etc.), all require a partner to be learned and to be performed effectively. Of course, we all know that there some aspects of many Martial Arts that can be practiced “solo”, (such as “kata” and kicking and punching a heavy bag), however, the vast majority of techniques require hands-on training with a live human being. Critics of on-line classes and DVD study, also argue that nothing can replace the physical presence of an Instructor to critique, motivate, correct, guide, and explain nuances and details. It is undeniable that those are valid objections and concerns that must be addressed and considered. But what then is the solution if optimum conditions (regular training on the mat with an Instructor) are not available? We started our distance learning program for the thousands of people around the world who have no Martial Arts school within travel distance; for those who, although may have a school in their area, it is of a different Art and they want to learn ours; for those who have a work schedule that does not allow them to attend classes; and for those who cannot afford a school’s tuition fee. And now, with many schools on lock-down, or on limited access restrictions, distance learning, with its various technologies, is filling a void and offering thousands of students the opportunity to continue their study. Yes, technology has come to our rescue, but then the question now is: does it also carry the seed of the ultimate destruction of traditional Martial Arts training? Will “brick & mortar” Martial Arts school become obsolete? Will hands-on training and physical contact between students be strongly discouraged and maybe even permanently banned? Will traditional Dojos become dinosaurs and eventually become extinct? It is impossible to predict the future (and foolish trying to do so). I honestly do not know what the final outcome will be, but we will definitely experience a transformation.

When envisioning a future dystopian society that employs advanced technologies to de-humanize the individual, ushering a nightmarish life of fear and oppression, most people think of the eerily prescient book “1984” by George Orwell (1903 – 1950). Published in 1949, this anti-totalitarian dark novel has become a classic cautionary tale for what kind of future may be waiting for us if we are submissive and apathetic instead of being informed, careful and vigilant. But there is an even earlier (and just as scary) science fiction novel that describes a future where the use of technology changes people’s lives in extremely unpleasant and undesirable ways. Published in 1932, “Brave New World”, written by Aldous Huxley (1894 – 1963), warns us about the danger of governments manipulating seductive future technologies that would inevitably enslave us and forever change life as we know it. I thought it a timely and appropriate title for this essay. Just one year ago it would have been unthinkable for most people to accept the social changes that have been imposed upon us. But now we are meekly accepting this new “reality” with hardly a courageous voice rising in protest or condemnation. So, is a dystopian Brave New World coming to the Martial Arts to extinguish our creativity, our choices and our traditions, or will we be able to stand strong and successfully har ness useful technologies to benefit, improve and even expand our industry? We are venturing in uncharted territory, and It remains to be seen if the Martial Arts community will survive, adapt and thrive. We have endured for centuries in the past…… will there be a place for us in the future?

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. We could not resist including some hooks with change of hand since they are our favorites in combat, despite their difficulty.

Master Gianluca Frisan presents a unique project dedicated to Pencak Silat and Kyusho, in collaboration with one of the greatest exponents of this Indonesian art, Mas Denis Brecevaz. Both teachers present the essence of the “Bela Diri” martial aspect of the Nusantara style, and analyze the way in which traditional warfare techniques hide Kyusho’s attacks to the neurological and vascular system. Kyusho is the “Turbo” of every technique, it's that which can exponentially increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our action. Just as the turbo for the engine is part of a more complex and complete system, Kyusho is part of any Martial Art, and although it cannot replace the practitioner's technical skill, it can nevertheless integrate it. You will find detailed information on various Kyusho pressure points, with references to the anatomy of the arms, head, trunk and legs. Information on the correct location, and the principles that you must know so as to achieve predictable reactions and be able to place yourself in a clear advantage against the aggressor. A first introductory and fundamental DVD to understand the integration and the perfect fusion between arts normally taught separately, but which are actually two sides of one coin.

In this 5th work, Sifu Salvador Sánchez presents a small sample of what is practiced at the TAOWS Academy headquarters. "We have often tried to show some of the innovations in practice and in the teaching method. And of course, we have received praise and criticism alike. For a short time, we think that the best option is to leave only for those who come to our formations and trust us the depth of practice and the details. Most probably we are not aware now of the great advance in the study of the system, but I am very sure that in a few years, many Wing Chun practitioners from different branches will "copy" These ideas to show your students and schools. Those who think about the good of their students will benefit from them without any prerogative in return. Something that many do not understand is that for those who form TAOWS Academy, practice is the most important point of how much we do. It is the passion for Martial Arts that keeps us on track. The video contains the execution and applications of Siu Nin Tao, Chum Kiu Tao, Biu Jee Tao, Muk Yak Chong, Six & Half Point Pole, Bat Jaam Dao forms, and ends with a complete and interesting report on the study tours of the Kung Fu in China, with the participation of various local teachers. 63 min.

WingTsun b) TECHNICAL PROBLEMS: 1. - DO WE LACK HITTING POWER? As everyone knows, WT seeks to hit without being hit, and to that end, it tries to get as close as possible to the opponent in order to feel and control his movements. Now, a close-fitting distance forces you to throw very short blows, and there arises, to my view, one of the greatest technical problems. Without hitting power there is no valid punch. So, is WT doomed to be a brilliant strategy but impossible to put into practice? Facts show that this is not the case: we’ve all met high-level practitioners who wer e able to pack a str ong punch just a few inches away. That explosive power was the result of having developed the ability of coordinating the entire body and weight in an explosive movement. But how do you achieve that? There are specific exercises for this, especially from the 5th section of Chi Sao (2nd Te c h n i c a l Grade). I t ’s remarkable to see how there is an extraordinary increase of the punching power between the 2nd and 3rd degree technical result of training in the corresponding sections.

“Without hitting power there is no valid punch. So, is WT doomed to be a brilliant strategy but impossible to put into practice.”

nd here we have the problem: due to the organizational and pedagogical obstacles that we have explained before (sectarianism, secrecy, money, slow learning, lack of seriousness, vanity, etc.), most WingTsun fans do not get to learn those exercises, being seriously impaired in their ability to effectively apply WT.

Let me propose some solutions: Obviously, first of all, we must begin by removing the obstacles mentioned; otherwise, I don’t see any possible arrangement. Secondly, it wouldn’t be at all a bad idea to pay attention to the last advances in disciplines such as physiology, kinesiology and technology, applied to sports sciences. I think it would be good to stop looking at our navel as we've been traditionally doing, and raise our eyes, as knowledge and engineering have come a long way, and they are light years away from what it was known when the nun Ng Mui created the WT, back in the 17th century. At least, let’s take a look and see if anything that exists in this XXI century can help us. In this sense certain elements of functional training SPECIFICALLY ADAPTED to the WT KINESIOLOGY and BIOMECHANICS could save us a lot of time. This is a subject I’d like to address in a special book. On the other hand, it may be convenient to extend the look to other styles that also use "short hitting", especially the internal styles, some of which have very interesting individual (with no partner) training methods. Finally, I think some of those advanced exercises can be taught, with great benefit, to beginners thus allowing them to increase their hitting power from the basic level.

“In addition, it is not a question of just learning the steps: it's necessary to teach their technique and design the training sessions so that the student learns to use them correctly, according to the tactics and actions with which they are combined in all directions.”

“I think it would be good to stop looking at our navel as we've been traditionally doing, and raise our eyes, as knowledge and engineering have come a long way, and they are light years away from what it was known when the nun Ng Mui created the WT, back in the 17th century.”

WingTsun 2. - DO WE LACK MOBILITY? To answer this question, we must first analyze which is the purpose of displacing ourselves in WT: We seek to close the distance mainly by counterattacking. The tendency is letting the adversary take the initiative, that is, making him feel forced to approach so that we intercept his movement by simultaneously advancing. In this sense, if the adversary doesn't attack there will be no fight. Counter-combat is the most widely used tactic in Martial Arts in general as the adversary will have to take his risks, and there will always be an open path for our counterattack (every attack involves choosing one angle and leaving another one open). Anyway, it doesn’t mean that this is the only strategy in WT, it’s only the easiest. It is possible to make WT on attacking (my Sifu used to do it), but it’s much more difficult and risky. Well, taking all this into account, we can say that the steps in WT will always seek to intercept, to go meeting the adversary, just when he launches his attack against us. WT steps don't intend dodging, running away, getting in and out in the distance. In WT there's no dancing or jumping to feint or to avoid becoming an easy target.

WingTsun That said, it would be a mistake to believe that it’s enough to move in a straight line and that a good displacing technique is not needed. And that's for two reasons: First: The adversary does move, and he may even do it very well, changing sharply in direction, which will force us to adapt our steps to "shrink spaces" thus preventing him from escaping, or that we lose the most advantageous front orientation. Second: If we manage to close the distance and intercept his attack, we will often have to take steps to yield or to place ourselves at the most advantageous angle. Let us not forget that our rival will not stand still for a second, and we'll need to adapt continuously to his changes. Now, we can put the question in the right context: Do we lack the mobility to correct these goals? The answer has two parts: The system doesn’t lack mobility; many WT practitioners do. Where does this contradiction come from? The steps and their theory are not taught in WT in an open and systematic way. They’re shown as if they were delivered with a dropper and in a quite veiled way. And scattered. So beginners were taught the SNT for the first six months, and to step forward dragging the back leg. In the 2nd form, Cham Kiu Tao, appear the translation turns, steps forward, step back (changes of direction), step with twist and weight forward and the short step. The third form shows the circular step. In the wooden dummy we find new steps with changes of direction, particularly looking for the flank and getting in the back. The ChiGerk has new steps, including cross steps. Finally, with the butterfly knives and the 3-post wooden dummy, there are taught very different and useful steps to chase and shrink spaces or to surround and move in circles. If you learn English boxing with a good instructor, you’ll be taught as soon as possible the boxing footwork and

“Counter-combat is the most widely used tactic in Martial Arts in general as the adversary will have to take his risks, and there will always be an open path for our counterattack.”

how to coordinate it with the blows and the defenses and dodges. It’s essential. Any boxing fan, however, can confirm that not all boxers, far from it, use the displacements with the maximum efficiency and variety. This may be due to lack of capacity or may also be the result of a personal choice for tactical reasons. So, Joe Frazier didn't use displacements that much whilst Ali moved a lot around the ring. But I think that was Frazier’s personal “style”: he kept going continuously forward swinging his head to dodge and corner his opponent. And Frazier defeated Ali in his first fight. Going back to WingTsun, we find that things are very different here. The steps are not taught from the beginning, but very slowly and disorderly, as we have already stated. What is the cause? Again, the problem is secrecy: keeping the student with such an important gap makes it possible for the teacher to limit the student's progress and thus have always an advantage over him. In addition, it is not a question of just learning the steps: it's necessary to teach their technique and design the training sessions so that the student learns to use them correctly, according to the tactics and actions with which they are combined in all directions. Sijo Leung Ting was a pioneer in teaching steps from the beginning, but he taught only a few, not all of them. Taking into account that only a tiny part of those who start in WingTsun, get to learn the entire system for the reasons explained in previous chapters, it is very normal that there are deficiencies in the displacing technique of the majority of WT followers (and please, don't naively believe that if you learn the ways you have already learned the steps). I would like to cite some information that appears in the book "Roots of WingTsun" by G. M Leung Ting p. 76: "The late Grandmaster Yip Man pointed out: "WingTsun Kung Fu is able to overcome other Kung Fu styles with its hand techniques. Anyway, when one has to fight an enemy who is also a high-level WT boxer, one has to rely on his leg techniques. For this reason, the steps are considered the most secret aspect of WingTsun Kung Fu. Even having learned wooden dummy techniques, leg techniques are taught in later stages". Draw your conclusions...

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. In this first DVD we will study the technique of empty hand vs. empty hand in different positions, against Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto, the use of weapons (Hishigi, Jutte, KusariFundó) or any type of stick, displacements, blows, and Hojo-Jutsu and Shibaru techniques

In this second video of the series, Justo Diéguez, creator of the KFM Keysi Fighting Method, teaches us to systematically implement the tools on which the principles and concepts of the method are based, starting from patterns and basic sequences of defense against middle distance fist attacks. The street is not Boxing, Kick-Boxing or Thai-boxing, the street is brutal. We do not have space or answers, it's not something we expect, it will be a shock! Therefore, in order to achieve the highest efficiency in risk situations, we must know and understand all the tools we have. Justo Diéguez explains in detail the basic sequences and the different defense possibilities in this distance (block defense, shoulder defense, Pensador defense ...) to gradually incorporate and combine new elements such as Pensaevo, Pensa-shoulder, Pensa-head, Pensahammer, and battering ram blow, demolishing tools and features of KFM that can be used in both defense and attack. The sword does not make the Warrior; it is the Warrior who makes the sword. The objective is simple: combine our tools to create a space with the opponent and react explosively entering the melee to end the fight.

One of the many components within its Four Divisions of study, Wae Gong (External Power), the physical curriculum is what is commonly known as Joint Manipulation. Utilizing the joints of the human anatomy with proper application of angles and force to control an opponent through pain/pressure compliance. Although a person may easily enlarge and strengthen their musculature, the ligaments and tendons connecting the bones and muscle to bones are difficult to strengthen. Hence, joint manipulation when properly applied can be highly effective with minimal strength and effort. When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.
