Sifu Vincent Lyn is the heir of a style with deep roots in the history of Kung Fu: the Ling Gar Kung Fu, an art which combines internal and external principles. Sifu Lyn is a man of great talents: besides being and expert master of Martial Arts and Oriental Medicine, in addition he is also an exceptional musician, a sportsman and an actor. Out of over 300 different Chinese Kung Fu styles, only three of them are considered really "internal" ones: Hsing I Chuan, Pa Kua Chang and Tai Chi Chuan. All other Kung Fu systems are considered external and stem from the teachings of Da Mo (Bodhidharma) and the Shaolin tradition. The first part of the video is dedicated to Tai Chi Chuan, of which Sifu Lyn shows two forms of different internal styles: "Harness the Wind", belonging to the family style Tai Chi Ling Gar, which dates back 650 years, and "Mountain Form", originally from Wudang Temple, in Hubei Province of northern China. The second part focuses on the external styles of Chinese Martial Arts, and shows two other forms: an extremely advanced Ling Gar Kung Fu external form, with about 100 movements, and the so called 18 Lohan form, originating from the Shaolin Temple in northern China, with 18 separate moves, and a total of 36 moves. fter eight years looking after Mom, this month I had to take her to a nursing home. Her Alzheimer’s made it completely impossible to keep taking care of her at home. The last few years had been tough, with things getting harder and harder. 2020 was terrible. While we were conducting the tests to diagnose the degree of her deterioration, the COVID-19 made its appearance on the world scene. This halted the whole process, so we pledged to keep moving forward only when the entire threat was under control. I don’t know about your countries, but in Spain more than 30,000 elderly people died from the epidemic, isolated in almshouses. I fulfilled my commitment, and only after she had received her vaccine did I take her to a nursing home. This last year of confinement and constant anxiety had been for me a hard period in which my main objective was to make sure that my 85-yearold mother didn't get infected; a year in which being able to sleep was a feat, since her condition was constantly changing to worse. It's sad when your mother stops recognizing you, sad when she calls you “dad”, but the worst thing is that whenever she'd come to herself and hold on to a few moments of lucidity, it served only to make her even more distressed. Not only because she realized what she herself was going through, but also because she got aware of what she was putting my wife and I through. Unfortunately, my brother didn't help at all, instead he dedicated himself to putting a spoke in the wheel of solutions, or buried his head in the sand like an ostrich, pretending to ignore the situation until the last moment. Who is that person I no longer know? I have no idea; all I know is I don’t want to frequent him anymore. With very worthy exceptions, my wife Maria and I were left completely alone in these struggles, making hard decisions, taking care of endless days, restraining pain mixed with the constant feeling of exhaustion... and all that pandemic. The death of our parents is always a painful event, because even if it’s in an unconscious way, they are our last parapet before the inevitable. But, living like this…? In the constant confusion, the abandonment of our identity, the destruction of our memory...? Is it really worth it? They say that when the last breath approaches, every sigh has value, every minute is another chance in which we cling to life, trying to postpone the inevitable; I really hope to arrive at the final stage with enough evolution as to be able to detach myself, give thanks and depart in peace, and I wish to do it being aware of myself and the moment, not like an empty shell adrift. But when the time comes, who

“My mother’s name is Luz, that is, Light, a name that defines her, and although now the lamp of her existence shines dimly, I will light her darkness with love, compassion and camaraderie until her last breath.”

knows... And what difference does it make? All these premises are characteristic of my present self, of my “personal importance”, and death, like birth, are things of which we are passive agents. They also say that it’s the spirit that revives our body, and it’s also the spirit who abandons the body when it dies; that the mind is just a biological device that uses the brain and the rest of our body, but that the spirit goes beyond those catalogs, transcending even identities and lives. Alzheimer’s, senile dementia (or the label they want to put on it), is a dying in life, while your spirit lies trapped in a body that few satisfactions can give you, on the contrary. According to Ryke Geerd Hamer, Alzhéimer’s is due to the “desire of not knowing”. It involves an active conflict of brutal separation in each brain hemisphere. My mother lived a few of them, starting with my father's death from cancer, who left her alone with two children, and that of her second husband, years later, after a stroke. She also looked after her dear mother, who was dying from cancer, and took care of her beloved father, who remained heartbroken, in a wheelchair and with hemodialysis when granny left us. My mother has had to be brave all her life. I've picked her up broken more than once, and I positively know that that mood has taken its toll on her. Still, she embarked on a sailboat in her fifties, on her way to Greece with her lover, my friend Colonel Ramos Alcaraz; I know that she drank the black wine of Ulysses, as well as I know that she enjoyed many wonderful sunrises, listening to the best operas. I know that she successfully got off the ground her "Librería Argentina" (Argentinian Bookstore) in Madrid, which helped many people (she provided work for up to eleven Argentinian refugees during the dictatorship so that they could rebuild their lives in Spain!). And I also know that she enjoyed the company of the intellectual elite of her time, that Luis Rosales wrote her poems in which he declared his love for her, that Benedetti said she was her friend and had coffee many mornings with her. Buero Vallejo, Borges, and many others frequented her company; she personally met her admired Jorge Amado, the greatest novelist in Brazil; Gabriel García Márquez and other great intellectual pens here and there. She lived in Rio de Janeiro the explosion of the Bossa Nova; in

Buenos Aires the times of the sweet silver; she traveled all over the world, and she loved, she loved intensely what she found, because travelling was what she liked best. Yes. My mother, like Neruda, could say “I confess I’ve lived”, the bad news is she no longer remembers. If death is the total abandonment of what we were, Alzheimer’s is a certain death in life, where what's left are only rags of identity, tatters of what we once were. Whether it was an “Armani” or a “dollar store jacket” doesn't matter anymore. There still remain - some things stay with you to the grave - the gestures, the character, manias (and not always the best!) and even that peculiar charm of each one, which is something own and non-transferable, and with which we’re all born. I will continue to love her and care for her, I will NEVER abandon her in this last period of her life, but I can no longer care for her. The mixture of impotence, with a feeling of double abandonment (she somehow left in her illness, and now it's I who leave her somewhere else and not next to me) is a corrosive and pernicious pain that I will be able to overcome, because I have done what I should do, when I should do it and the way I should do it. But, folks, I confess that it’s been and keeps being the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. Only those who have lived it in first person can know what it means. And yet, the experience will have been different in each case, because the deterioration suffered by each Alzheimer's patient always differs from the rest and the situations in which the disease puts everyone are also different. My eternal thanks to my dear companion Maria, who stood firm like no one else in a harsh situation that had come to her. Without her help, her strength, and her thorough doing, I could hardly have gone through this. And as much as I might regret my mother’s complaints, depending on how I find her, I will continue to visit her every week, ensuring that she is well taken care of and worrying daily about her well-being. My mother’s name is Luz, that is, Light, a name that defines her, and although now the lamp of her existence shines d i m l y, I w i l l l i g h t h e r d a r k n e s s w i t h l o v e , compassion and camaraderie until her last breath.

Chinese Martial Arts LING GAR TZAI KUNE DO – A Chinese Family Style Kung Fu/Tai Chi That Combines Internal & External Principles. Introduction by Managing Director Budo International Publishing – Alfredo Tucci There are many facets to the Martial Arts that go from selfdefense, to health, passing through sports, performance, self-awareness and even into the cinema; these facets embody multiple complicated social and cultural phenomena and frequently make them accessible for the public at large. This ample range of knowledge is so rich and vast it is almost impossible to embrace it completely or to create a framework for summing up and arranging it all. Vincent Lyn, as heir to a well-known style of Martial Arts with deep roots in the history of Kung Fu, possesses the ability to navigate this passage. This exceptional perspective has enabled him to contemplate in a global manner what others perceive in only two dimensions. In addition, as a modern man, a mix of cultures and races, he has had the insight to expand his knowledge and experiences, which in turn have come to enrich even the rigorous centuries of tradition of Chinese Martial Arts. Lyn is a man of great talents: and exceptional musician, athlete, actor, and expert maestro of the Martial Arts and of eastern medicine. There are sides to him one rarely finds in others: namely a sensibility as crystal clear and pure as that of a child, mixed with a force and determination

of one who has lived a lot. All of this is reflected in a charming personality that never theless has within its unique seriousness and unfathomable depths. I have known him well and dealt with him intensely in recent years, in both professional and personal matters and each encounter only serves to increase my respect and feel ins of

friendship for him. His movie star side has served to reinforce the sense that he fits very well into all that is understood about the world of Martial Arts; though the cinema is an artistic expression, it also creates images that build the collective subconscious and it has played an essential role in how the world perceives the Martial Arts today.

Lyn is a bridge across human cultures, half Chinese, half British, a spiritual man and a movie star; he is a mix of uncommon elements that transform him into an exceptional guide for all those that want to go deep into mysteries of the Martial Way. In this book Vincent Lyn provides the ample quantity of materials covering the other important aspects that comprise the world of Mar tial Ar ts. Lyn has obser ved the ancient principal of "Shuhari, " a term for Japanese Martial tradition and the cer emonial world of tea: "Shu" means honoring excellent teachings left behind by ancestors; "Ha" signifies learning these instructions well; and the final part of the term "Ri" point out that when all is said and done, one ought not to hold on too strongly to the past so that one can create something newer and even better. efore any real description of any of the Internal Arts of Pa-Kua, Hsing-I or Tai-Chi can be rendered, we must first examine in brevity what actually constitutes an "Internal" Art form verses an "External" Art form. Indeed, at an even more base level, we must address the wester n conceptualization that the term "Kung Fu" actually applies to all martial arts that are Chinese in origin. The term "Kung Fu" strictly translated means "a skillful ability attained through hard work" period. It does not imply any specific style or system implicitly. In fact, being a concert pianist and could be considered to have good "Kung Fu" as far as the Chinese speaking population is concerned. In Asia, all art forms are referenced by their specific name to identify them from the myriad other forms of "Kung Fu". For example: Lung Hsin Style Pa Kua Chang, ShanXi Style Hsing I Chuan, Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan or Liou He Ba Fah Chuan respectively of the Neijia families. With that said, let us explore briefly what an Internal style is. The original meanings of Internal vs. External Kung Fu have been largely misconstrued over the last generation due to many "oral" variations of the many different Kung Fu families trying to paint a picture showcasing their own individual style. So, now a days a person hears many incorrect statements regarding these differences such as External Styles are "Hard" and Internal Styles are "Soft", but in reality, the original meaning of this "difference" was entirely philosophic and geographic.

The original meaning of the external styles was simply that those styles were originally started by Da Mo and the Shaolin temples (Buddhist philosophy) who purportedly came from India, and was hence from outside China (External Style). And the original meaning of "Internal" was to denote those styles that were founded on the Taoist philosophy of Lao Tzu and were created inside of China (Internal Styles). Of the over three hundred different styles of Chinese Kung Fu, only three types are considered "Internal" by that definition, and they are: Hsing I Chuan (Form of the Will Boxing), Pa Kua Chang (Eight Trigrams Palm) and Tai Chi Chuan (Supreme Pole Boxing). All other Kung Fu styles are considered External and derived from Da Mo and the Shaolin tradition. So, as you can see from this original and correct meaning, by definition there is no such thing as a style that is both internal and external. It would be a geographic and philosophic impossibility.

It is also true, because of certain historical events, that nowadays the Internal school of thought focuses on not only self-defense and external manifestations of ability, such as strength, stamina, flexibility and physical prowess, but also explores the inside of the practitioner’s development. Internal Kung Fu strengthens the internal organs and circulatory systems. It increases lymphatic circulation to aid the practitioner in removing toxins from the body more rapidly. It improves focus of mind and concentration of intellect. We also learn to apply the principles of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, principles of redirection, absorption and

reflection, evasion and entrapment, etc. These lessons are just as applicable strategically in a business meeting as they are in self-defense and confrontation. A person need only be taught their essence of expression in the practical sense. This is also part of Internal Kung Fu. This brings us to an interesting and fascinating dilemma what about styles that crossed both external & internal principles. Such as my family, Ling Gar which is among the oldest of the surviving family Kung Fu styles in China. Some noted martial arts historians credit Ling Gar for much of the trapping and use of centerline principles common inn many well-known southern Kung Fu styles, including Wing Chun. Yet remarkably going back to its recorded origins over 25 generations ago, the style had never been taught outside the family until recently.

From its known beginnings in the earliest days of the Ming Dynasty beginning in 1368 to the international success of Jackie Chan’s film “Operation Condor” in 1992 co-starring Sifu Vincent Lyn as the lead villain. The history of Ling Gar isn’t really about evolution of Kung Fu/Tai Chi styles, or even the story of its famous family, but rather a way of life, and a way of living that became part of China’s heart and heritage. Ling Gar might’ve become just another curious fact for academics and historians were it not for my life-long efforts to bring it to the forefront of Chinese martial art history. There is grace, finesse, power and skill in my family style Ling Gar that one develops over years of practice. It can be simplistically subtle or extremely flashy, but whatever form it takes it is almost always inspiring. One of the most over looked aspects of Ling Gar is the duality of its nature. It can be hard or it can be soft. The focus can be internal or external. Whatever form it takes, there is a suggestion that there is more to Ling Gar than meets the eye of the casual practitioner.

“There is grace, finesse, power and skill in my family style Ling Gar that one develops over years of practice.”

Chinese Martial Arts For the more than 650 years since its humble beginnings warriors and healers alike have sought to improve their understanding of the human body. This has persisted to the present day and like the teachers and masters before me Ling Gar keeps evolving. It has crossed cultural and philosophical boundaries bringing us a broad overview of the human condition. Through practice and research our understanding continues to evolve. It is an integrated exploration of our uniqueness that will ultimately lead to a comprehensive map of the human mind, the body, and the spirit.

A GUIDE TO TRAINING JEET KUNE DO ATTRIBUTES We have already established that adapting during the many potential transitions is critical. Therefore, to prepare yourself for the street, your training has to mimic all potential mutations that might possibly occur. For example, start your practice session by stick fighting, then drop your stick, pull out a blade, and continue the match knife fighting. Throw down the blade and continue with kickboxing; then enter into trapping range, implementing headbutts, elbows, and knees. Next, take the fight to the ground and kick into Brazilian JiuJitsu. Look for the appropriate time to use Kina Mutay (uninterrupted biting and eye gouging). At this point you could throw another student into the fray - instantly come to your feet and continue the fight as a mass attack. This entir e round should flow with no interruptions. Training in this manner emphasizes some of the most vital attributes for a street fight: Adapting and controlling the emotions during transitions.

Excerpt from Paul Vunak's book “Blueprint and Roadmap to Contemporary Jeet Kune Do: The Anatomy of Asymmetrical Violence”

would like to re-emphasize the incredible respect I have for the competitors of NHB tournaments. Their conditioning and focus are at an uncommon level. In fact, they are so focused that this could be detrimental in an actual street fight. I have borne witness to this firsthand. Indulge me for a moment while I share with you an experience from a day in 1990. It was a typical Friday afternoon. My partner, Tom Cruse, and I had just finished working with one of the Navy SEAL teams. As tradition would have it, the guys would take us out to their favorite hangout to have a few beers. Our motley crew consisted of three Navy men, Tom, and myself. Our three buddies were all former heavyweight wrestlers of Olympic caliber, with the approximate build of a Mark Coleman or a Mark Kerr. When we arrived at the bar, it looked like something out of a movie: A stereotypical biker bar. My visceral response was to say, “Guys, let's just go home... this place looks like a fight waiting to happen.” But I knew I had Tom on one side and I glanced over at my three buddies (which translated into about 900 pounds of beef) and thought to myself, “So what - if we fight, we fight.” (That was my mentality in those days.) That was Scene One.

“To prepare yourself for the street, your training has to mimic all potential mutations that might possibly occur.”

Scene Two. A couple of hours later, Tom is pulling a typical Tom Cruise in The Color of Money, running the pool table and irritating bikers right and left. Finally, the whole bar goes into what one could only call a “huddle,” and out steps the kingpin biker, a pool player from Hell. Scene Three. Cruse now has a few hundred dollars of this guy's money, my wrestling buddies are at the other side of the bar talking to some women, and I am grimly assessing the situation. I'm thinking ... “I've seen this movie before.” At this point, the two pool players are down to their last game and Tom has a straight-in shot on the 9ball to win the match. Instead of simply making the shot and going home a winner, Tom looks over at me, makes some wisecrack about, "Einstein taught me this.” and makes a triple bank and buries it.

“Training in this manner emphasizes some of the most vital attributes for a street fight: Adapting and controlling the emotions during transitions.”

To say that the already-volatile situation had reached critical mass would be a slight understatement. We now had about 20 bikers against the five of us. Fists, bottles, and chairs started flying. The three heavyweight wrestlers, all in unison like some synchronized swim show, focused in on one guy apiece, and, in a state of rage took them straight to the ground. This left Tom and me to deal with the rest of the bar! This was one of the worst beatings I have ever taken. In fact, all five of us ended up in the hospital. I personally got the worst of the deal and spent four days in intensive care. It is important to emphasize here that each one of those wrestlers would have done exceptionally well in any NHB tournament. Here is the moral to the story: This wasn't a no-holds-barred tournament. This was the street.

Chapter Summary/Key Takeaways There are only two safe assumptions in the street Your opponent is armed Your opponent has friends This isn't a no-holds-barred tournament. This is the street Next in Chapter 3: Enter the Navy SEAL Fighting System

Shaolin

Shaolin Da Hong Quan Today I have the satisfaction of being able to talk about one of the Shaolin forms that I have practiced the most, or, said in other words, a form in which I have specialized for more than 8 years, and it's not only my favorite, but also it's my Master's favorite. Shi De Yang, my Master, is a monk of the 31 Generation of the Shaolin Temple and the highest representative of its culture worldwide. Every time he has to participate in an exhibition, he proudly displays his Da Hong Quan. In all my years of practice I haven't seen anyone execute it the way he does, so precise, with firm positions and changes as fast and fluid as the water of a great wave, Every time he performs Da Hong Quan, people present are speechless. I've even heard other Masters say that he, Shi De Yang, is undoubtedly number one in Da Hong Quan throughout China.

“It should also be noted that the creation and practice of the forms or taolu as such were not dated until the end of the Ming dynasty, so these stories are probably obsolete or even lack truthfulness.”

haolin Da Hong Quan is one of the essential forms within the Shaolin style and one of the most practiced in all the Kung Fu schools of the Temple, and while the student will learn the basics with Xiao Hong Quan, he will get the mastery on them with Da Hong Quan. However, the practice of Da Hong is not simple and, undoubtedly, it requires a great deal of effort in its practice and, above all, it's necessary to find the right person to whom reliably transmit its training and work keys. During the ROC, General Shi You San's army bur ned much of the Shaolin Temple bibliography, making it very difficult to know exactly the origin of the form. According to some popular legends about Da Hong Quan history, its creation is attributed to Li Sou, Jue Yuan and Bai Yufeng (which also helped the development of other Shaolin styles or forms) in their visit to the Shaolin Temple during the Yuan Dynasty, where they are said to have also created Shaolin Xiao Hong Quan.

Shaolin

“Shaolin Da Hong Quan is one of the essential forms within the Shaolin style and one of the most practiced in all the Kung Fu schools of the Temple.·”

There are currently six versions on the origin of Hong Quan which are as detailed: The first one is attributed to Damo (Bodhidharma) since one of his disciples named Huike inherited a type of Gong Fu called Er Hong Quan. This information can be found in the book "Lao You Can Ji". The second is attributed to Emperor Zhao Kuanyin of the Song Dynasty, who practiced for three years at the Shaolin Temple and since then left Taizu Chang Quan and Xiao Hong Quan as his inheritance. This information appears in the book "Fen Cheng Quan Shu Milu". The third version says that Emperor Zhao Kuanyin inherited Da Hong Quan and that the second emperor of the Song Dynasty inherited Er Hong Quan. In the fourth version, Emperor Zhao Kuanyin inherited Da Hong Quan, which eventually evolved into Da Xiao Hong Quan Men. The fifth version says that when Zhao Kuanyin was a child he practiced Xiao Hong Quan, when he became an adult, that form was called Da Hong Quan and when he grew old that taolu was called Lao Hong Quan.

The sixth version tells us that according to Abbot De Chan of the Shaolin Temple, the Shaolin Hong Quan had its origin in the Ming Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Zhu Yuan Zhang in the year Hong Wu, that is from 1368 to 1398 AD. For that reason, it was called Hong Quan. It should also be noted that the creation and practice of the forms or taolu as such were not dated until the end of the Ming dynasty, so these stories are probably obsolete or even lack truthfulness. The important thing to be clear about is that both Xiao Hong Quan and Da Hong Quan have been practiced for over 200 years, and they have remained the same ever since. Depending on the lineage certain variations can be appreciated, but basically the foundations are the same. As for Da Hong Quan, it can be translated as a great torrent of water, and is composed of three forms, yi lu, err lu and san lu, of which the most practiced is Shaolin Da Hong Quan yi lu which is the one that contains all the essential movements of the style. Both Da Hong Quan er lu and san lu, will be easy to lear n provided you have already mastered the first series. When you see a Shaolin practitioner perform Da Hong

Quan, you can appreciate the evolutionary level within the system and at what stage of training he is. Da Hong Quan is a form that demands not only perfect control of the body, but also of the breath. Its movements are energetic and powerful, its blows short and precise and its changes of positions are fast and fluid like a great river. Within the structure of the form we can find some of the most relevant basic positions of Shaolin Kung Fu, such as mabu, gongbu, xubu, pubu, dingbu, dulibu, which are of paramount importance when it comes to perfectly mastering the structure of the form. Some of Shaolin Da Hong Quan’s key moves are: Shuāng yúndǐng, dà qīxīng, gōng bù dān biān, xiǎohǔ bào tóu, shuāng yúndǐng dà hǔ bào tóu, wǔ huā zuò shān entre otros. 双云顶，大七星，弓步单鞭，小虎抱头，双云顶大虎抱头，五花坐山.

Shaolin The Union of Mind and Behavior In the training of forms there is an enemy without existing any, in the encounter with an enemy there is no enemy (练功时无敌如有敌遇敌时有敌如无敌 ). The practitioners of the Shaolin gongfu are required to unite mind and behavior, since each movement, each technique gathers reflection on combat tactics. Do not underestimate or overestimate the enemy, in combat you can use fictional and real movements, elevations and descents, observe what is in front and behind, look to the left and attack to the right. If the opponent is

higher/larger than us then we will attack his lower zone, otherwise we will attack the uppermiddle zone of the enemy, using fictitious moves to confuse him and take advantage of his strength to defeat him (四两拔千斤 Si Liang Bo Qian Jin - move a ton with half a kilo, that is, you don’t need to be big to defeat a giant). Each movement has its usefulness and in training you have to imagine an enemy to attack and from whom to defend themselves. If the combination of the movements with the mind (intention 意), qi (气 ), force/energy (力 ) is achieved then we will find the method of the practice of gongfu shaolin par excellence. These principles are applicable to all forms that are practiced in the Shaolin style and should serve as a guide in order to obtain better results in our practice. Shifu Bruno Tombolato

I wanted to become like Rickson! (Part 2) One of the most important aspects in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which is quite different today in the competition-oriented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, was the training of distance shor tening and the clinch. W ith the "takedowns" and "throws" the tactical behavior in a standing situation, was always explained in such a way that the opponent had also the possibility to strike us at any time convenient to him. All these worries, you just do not have in the sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, because in competition no striking techniques are allowed. We always trained both scenarios in the standing position: 1) how to proceed if the opponent is a "striker", and 2) if he wants to clinch me, choke me, try to hold me down, take me to the ground in a headlock, etc. Each lesson included techniques in standing and on the ground, and never did you feel like you were missing out. etting into a clinch while standing is easier said than done, but as I always explain, no one was pressured unnecessarily. You were always given enough time to deal with the position and familiarize yourself with the situation. The techniques were trained and not drilled as if the opponent would only stand there for us, "motionless"! It was learned in small steps, as if you were cutting a large pizza into small pieces and enjoying them slowly, not distorting them into two or three bites so that you would then get a stomachache afterwards.

There were no Rambo’s trained either, but we shared the mat with doctors, university professors and teachers, cab drivers, construction workers, cooks, waiters, office and bank employees, CEOs, police officers, firefighters, surfing professionals, nurses, and so on. All of them thought about staying healthy and that later, after each lesson, we also had to go back to work to earn our bread. In the clinch in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I also learned to work differently than before in Thai boxing under Ajarn Chai Sirisute. The clinch was the position where I would now control the opponent to bring him to the ground as quickly as possible, out of the flow of the fight, to dominate him. The clinch I knew quite well, there I also did not feel uncomfortable, but now I had to be able to bring a heavier opponent to the ground, which only worked if I would also apply the correct technique, because the opponent would also not just stand still in the real fight, but to fight back with all means. In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, boxing and kicking techniques were mainly used to keep the opponent at a distance, or to create a "bridge" just to get into the clinch. So, they were not KO techniques in the classical sense, but just as I said, an extension to get to the opponent.

Vacirca Bros Thanks to the most important Gracie laboratory, the Vale-Tudo fights (the original MMA in the back days) held in Brazil, the family was able to gain a lot of experience in this regard, because these fights were mostly against Karate-kas, Boxers, Thai boxers and Capoeiristas, which of course benefited them in the development of their Gracie techniques. Recently, one of our Gracie instructors asked me which techniques I would show at the beginning, and I told him that I could basically show any Gracie technique to a complete beginner, because in our school the techniques are not taught based on a belt program, as it is in karate or judo. It also makes no difference whether the person is male or female, and whether it is martial arts or combat sports experience. If I were to do an introductory class for children or teenagers, I would show them scenarios that they could have experienced on a school playground, on the way to school, or on the way home. With women, I do the same thing: I confront them with the situation should they be sexually harassed or even assaulted by a stranger. Being with your back on the ground is not pleasant for anyone, man or woman. For a woman this is even worse, because probably the aggressor, in such a life-threatening situation, wants to have not only her belongings, but also her body.

“In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, boxing and kicking techniques were mainly used to keep the opponent at a distance, or to create a "bridge" just to get into the clinch.”

Today you can buy dozens of books where you are shown how to defend yourself "efficiently" and "easily". Some of these books look like bibles, with thousands of photos and dozens of pages of explanation. It is like going back to college and having to catch up on your studies! In my opinion, however, the books are useless if you do not test it, sooner or later, on the tatami. And even then, it is not guaranteed that this technique will work on the open road. Just keep in mind that you can not replace a good teacher and live training. As far as ground fighting is concerned, I can now tell you with a clear conscience that 90% of the techniques shown will not work unless they are properly shown and explained by a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teacher. Ground fighting is gladly ridiculed by numerous styles that do not recognize the very ground fighting and stamped as unnecessary. The same completely useless techniques are shown repeatedly, such as "punching the opponent's nuts" and "poking fingers in the eyes", etc. It is just easier to show such techniques than to really deal with them. Even as an instructor you never stop learning and you should always develop yourself further, so that you can also better support the students on their way.

Vacirca Bros “I do not want my Jiu-Jitsu students to memorize the moves, I teach the subconscious to react. We train the reflexes, which are faster than the conscious mind.”

These, so smart "Rambo"-like instructors, have forgotten one thing: Namely to emphasize that a) they have never been in such a situation themself, and b) that they do not really know the field of "ground fighting" at all! To bake a chicken in the oven, and to kill a chicken to eat it, is not the same! Do not just believe everything: remember that with such techniques, you would be required to press both your thumbs into someone's eye socket! It takes more than just the "technique". In my opinion, you should also work a little on the "killer instinct"! I do not want my Jiu-Jitsu students to memorize the moves, I teach the subconscious to react. We train the reflexes, which are faster than the conscious mind. Imagine you are driving down the road and a child jumps in front of your car, your reflexes cause your foot to hit the brakes. If you had to use your conscious mind to think about what to do, a tragedy could occur.

Unfortunately, I observe more and more, in different Jiu-Jitsu schools, that the idea and use of the conventional "Randori" (Jap. Free Grappling) - often also called "Sparring" or "Rolling", is incorrect. If the Randori is too hard, please leave this Jiu-Jitsu school! If the randori is too "flowing" or "loose", then please, also leave this school. The right measure, as with everything, lies in the middle. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, students sometimes "roll" so fluidly and loosely that they are still barely touching. It looks more like "break dancing" than a good, simulated fight. In contrast, sparring is often done so hard that the students must call in sick to their employer the next day, otherwise the banker would have to show up at the counter with a black eye, and the doctor would have to postpone his next surgery so as not to see his patient for the last time should his hands not be usable! As a Gracie instructor, another unique aspect of teaching is the fact that we are gentle with the students. They came here to learn, not to get beat up. They are here to learn, not to lose and suffer. Learning well and properly is the key to everything. Many military and police agencies today use chokehold techniques that do not work and are even highly dangerous, and this results in injuries or even increased deaths to civilians. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques are effortlessly applied, and if a technique is uncomfortable, it is not properly executed. This made me realize over 30 years ago that the Gracie JiuJitsu techniques are logical and reasonable enough to be used by virtually anyone. Continuing again next month... Please stay healthy and strong! ~Franco~ www.graciejiujitsu.eu | www.graciegarage.ch

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attacker’s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

The KMRED group, which in recent years has been focusing its work on the problems of the standing up combat at short-range, presents its fourth DVD, in which it's discussed the integration of LETHWEI’s "tools" into its "R.E.D. Training" methodology. As usual, it is not about "SHOWING OFF" the athletic and even cinematic skills of its instructors. Nor is it about demonstrating thousands of different techniques that make practitioners dream. The stated goal of the group is to provide avenues of work for people who are really interested in the "content" of the selfdefense area. You will also find at the end of this DVD, the positioning and choices of the group regarding some of the themes that feed all the ghosts in self-defense, such as defenses against threats with firearms, etc. 55 min.

“Larga Mano” (Long Hand) simply means long-distance combat, a method that teaches you to stay away from your opponent and hurt him without even entering the hand-to-hand distance. In a way, the Filipino people were ahead of the times, perhaps because, little conditioned by their traditions, they suffered many invasions and, frequently, their habits and customs were altered. But they knew how to turn their misfortune into advantage, and they learned to absorb and integrate everything that could be useful and increase effectiveness. Their Martial Arts are an excellent example of this. Philippine Arts masters did not pose the problem of remaining tied to such or such custom, but without hesitation, integrated into their own systems personal experiences of Karate or Japanese Judo, Western Boxing, Silat of neighboring Indonesia and the ancient traditions linked to Scrima, the art of self-defense perfected in the Italian peninsula. When the Philippine Arnis spread in the West, to distinguish it from Fencing, it was called "the living hand fencing", because the hand that did not hold the weapon, actively collaborated in the actions of defense and offense. Thus, the difference between the two systems, the East and the West, is that in Olympic fencing, the unarmed hand is kept safe and used at most to balance the impulse in assaults; in Arnis the unarmed hand is alive and active. In this work, Professor Maltese shows us the basic positions, defenses and fundamental attacks, guard exercises, blocking, crossing and counterattack in Redondo, the fifth, seventh, eighth and contras defenses, dynamic training and free combat exercises with protections. We will also see the bag training (blows, blockades and counterattacks) and a final chapter dedicated to Sword and Dagger, the Italian art in the Philippine Kali, executed with authentic weapons.

In that film you were shown the 6 Original Hands of Shaolin, their proper use and the Kyusho (Vital) targets that cause paralysis, dysfunction and incapacitation of an opponent. In this video we help you learn Kyusho and the 6 Ji Hands to a higher degree of skill with simple training exercises. These exercises will increase your skill with Kyusho, as you learn to transition from hand to hand, side to side, target to target. By training these slowly at first, then with ever increasing speed these 6 Shaolin Hands will become automatic and devastating to your opponents. These same 6 Hands were taught long ago in an ancient sequence called “Rokkishu” (6 Hands) and now from a more modern adaptation called “Tensho” (Turning Palms), it is the exact way to penetrate deep into the inner man to access the Kyusho (Vital)Targets. You will learn the Tools, Targets, Trajectories, Tuite and Tegumi from the Original Shaolin methodology. This is also Vital Information on the secret meanings of the Ancient Bubishi and Karate itself. It will help you understand the Keys to unlocking the hidden code of that epic manual and base of Martial Arts. “The Power is in Your Hands”. - Evan Pantazi

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan Don), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. In this second volume, Levet executes the Quyen Tu Tuong Con Phap, and explains in detail the Phan Don counterattacks 1-12, and the 39 techniques and applications contained in the form, including those for intermediate moves. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.

In the same way that many weapons have been developed to provide advantages in combat, the human body has also improved the ways of using its natural weapons, that is, its structural components head, trunk and limbs, for the purpose of attack and defense. In Japan, empty hand combat techniques have become so effective that they have been studied and applied against any type of opponent, whether armed or not. The study of angles, tractions, impacts and levers, as well as the damages they could cause were was so deep that unarmed arts achieved the same advantages as an opponent with the most dangerous weapons. Torite (“Hand that grabs”) is the art of defeating and capturing an opponent with your own hands, the part of JuJutsu employed by the police at different periods in Japan until World War II. An Art that seeks effectiveness to arrest a person, always looking to nullify from the start the opponent’s ability to attack, through a complete arsenal of techniques with empty hands and weapons, and a whole structure of arrests with ropes and sticks to facilitate the actions of the other companions. Avi Nardia begins a new series of works focused on CQB and high-risk situations. Some can be good shooters but bad fighters and it's preferable to develop the fighting spirit, not only teaching how to be good shooters, but also to handle aggressive situations to face reality and violence. To achieve these principles, acting with determination and confidence is essential. This first work explains in detail the regulations on the handling of the weapon, holstering and drawing the gun, ways of grasping the gun, loading, hand changes, changing magazines, one and two-handed work, covering and concealing yourself, shooting with precision while you are on the move, and shifting quickly and safely in conflict areas managing them proactively, not reactively. Muay Thai The ancient wisdom of Muay Boran Salab Fan Pla: footwork, counter technique, life style Muay Thai is the Art of fighting with the main body weapons. Hands, feet, legs, knees, elbows and head are used to skilfully attack and defend in hundreds of effective ways. Muay Thai’s attacking system is renowned worldwide: a thai boxer’s kicks, knee and elbow strikes are considered some of the most powerful strikes a human being can execute. However, the Siamese defensive style is to be ranked among the best in Martial Arts, too. In fact, the thai Art of Defence (Sillapha Kan Rab) is a sophisticated defensive system that, once mastered, is the perfect complement to the devastating offensive maneuvers typical of this ancient combat art. The Mother of all defensive strategies of Muay Thai, the first maneuver taught to all Muay students to keep safe during a fight is called Salab Fan Pla. This strategy realistically applies what the ancient Latins suggested as the golden rule of any fight, that is "primum vivere" ,i.e. survive first. This ancestral Siamese fighting strategy teaches how to apply a swift zig-zag step that resembles the alternating (Salab, สลับ) of the teeth (Fan, ปลา) of a fish (Pla, ปลา). This fundamental maneuver allows you to avoid a frontal collision with any strike the opponent may throw at you. By avoiding your enemy’s power, moving to the outside of the line of fire, you can reach a dominant angle from where strikes, grabs and joint locks can be more easily applied. In fact, thanks to a well-timed sidestep, you actually blend with the offensive action, depriving the attack of all its aggressive force.

Muay Thai If your timing is good, you can end up at an angle to the opponent, thus achieving a remarkable tactical advantage over the attacker. First, only one of the latter’s legs and one arm can reach you instead of two. Secondly, the attacks you can execute from an angled position are more difficult to counter than those executed from a face to face position. All this, brings as a consequence that your actions can be performed with relative ease, compared to what would happen if the assailant were facing you. By shifting out of the line of the opponent's strike and by checking his arm, you are positioned in an ideal manner to reach the vital points located on the side of his head. The counterattacks can be executed with the lead hand or with the rear hand, with the front or back knee, with the front or back elbow. Shin kicks can also be used to attack the legs, back or ribcage, even if a round kick delivered from such a short distance needs very powerful hips’ rotation to be effective.

Proper execution of Salab Fan Pla step In all kinds of steps the boxer must train both his advancing and retreating strategies. In sidestepping, balance must be maintained (the center of gravity must be located midway between the boxer’s feet) in order to be able to attack and defend swiftly at any moment, in a fight. Through proper evasive footwork, the Nak Muay will make an opponent miss while best positioning himself in order to deliver strong counter blows from the “outer circle”. An important element of footwork is the coordination of hands and feet; when the feet and hands work together the fighter is perfectly balanced, well protected and ready to attack or defend efficiently. Many oriental martial arts consider sidestepping a fundamental defensive attitude around which a full combative strategy can be built. In Japanese martial arts such as Karate, Judo or Aikido, Tai Sabaki is the term which relates to body shifting: the shift is usually employed to evade an attack in such manner that the defender ends up in an advantageous position. An example of Tai Sabaki is moving off the line of attack; this implies the use of good timing rather than physical strength. The striking similarities with Siamese Salab Fan Pla fighting strategy need no comment. Likewise, many great western Boxing champions made full use of the evasive fighting strategy their Thai counterpart call Salab Fan Pla. When I was a young boxer I was taught the evasive step at a very early stage of my apprenticeship: the sidestep was called “the bullfighter’s shift” by my trainer. This name was a

Muay Thai clear reference to the elegant evasive tactic of a torero who evades the bull’s charge, in preparation of a deadly stab by his sword. A famous exponent of this kind of technical attitude was James “Peerless” Driscoll. In his books the great champion explained in detail how skillful boxers should use side-stepping as much as possible as a safe and effective way to avoid the opponent’s heavy artillery. “Side-stepping is safe because it spares the inevitable bruises and weariness derived from repeated stopping: a jarred nerve may easily partially or fully paralyse the guarding arm impairing its subsequent utility. Moreover, a block or parry, however skilfully employed, is always a waste of time and energy. If one sidesteps a blow he has always both hands ready to retaliate and the off-balanced opponent will be brought right in to receive a counter strike.”

Examples of combat applications of Salab Fan Pla 1. Outside step, wrist grab and double counter attack: push elbow and diagonal knee. As the attacker throws a right straight punch, step out and catch his wrist with your rear hand. From a dominant angle you can counterattack with a powerful combination: a push elbow to the opponent’s elbow joint followed by a diagonal knee strike to the midsection are a very efficient sequence of counterattacks. 2. Outside step, wrist grab and simultaneous elbow and knee counter attack. Against a straight lead punch to the head, step out and parry the attack. At the same time grab the opponent’s wrist and close the gap. From a dominant angle you can strike the face (with a horizontal elbow slash) and the solar plexus (with a straight knee) at the same time. 3. Sidestep against a straight punch, open hand parry followed by a check of the attacking arm and straight punch to the jaw. As the opponent attacks with a straight punch step out of the line of fire and parry the blow with your front hand. Without losing contact with the attacking arm, counterattack immediately with a straight punch (or hook punch) to the side of the head (temple) or jaw of the opponent.

Muay Thai Case study: Muay Chaisawat In Muay Chaisawat, defensive maneuvers are listed according to 3 fundamental systems. In the first system techniques are divided according to the function they have in repelling opponents’ attacks. There are defensive techniques against punch, against kick, against knee, and against elbow. In the second system, techniques are divided according to the defender’s weapon used to counter: counters by punches are included in the first group, counters by kicks are in the second group, counter by knees are in the third group and counters by elbows in the fourth group. The third system divides defensive techniques into 3 groups: all techniques that combine outside stepping with parrying or dodging are included in the first group (Salab Fan Pla group). Techniques that combine inside step and parrying are included in the second group (Paksa Waeg Rang group). Defences by the knees against kicks and knee strikes are included in the third group. According to Master Chaisawat, the

strategic applications of Salab Fan Pla are so many and so much important that all together they form a whole counter-fighting system. In fact, at the same time or immediately after sidestepping, a clever fighter always executes a swift counter strike to one of the opponent’s exposed weak spots from a very advantageous position (from the so-called dominant angle). The counters can be one or more punches, one or more kicks, one or more knee strikes or one or more elbow blows: moreover, several throws and joint locking maneuvers are easily applied after Salab Fan Pla step. The huge amount of possible counter techniques that a skilled boxer can execute from a dominant angle form a very efficient method of counter-fighting. Some boxers’ attitude leads them to specialize in evasive footwork combined with hard counter strikes: such boxers make full use of all the possible applications of Salab Fan Pla combat strategy and very often become true champions.

Salab Fan Pla and resilience Being skilled in using Salab Fan Pla in everyday life can be compared to possessing the quality of resilience. In fact, resilient people develop a mental capacity that allows them to adapt with ease in the face of adversity, bending like bamboo instead of breaking. A resilient fighter not only uses evasive tactics to avoid head-on collisions with the opponent’s attack but he manages to exploit the change in

position to efficiently turn a swift defence into a strong counterattack. The same is true for everyday small wars that we are all destined to face in the course of our lives: step away from adversity but keep an assertive mentality. You want to survive first, that’s for sure, but at the same time you also want to come out a winner. Every new challenge is an occasion to grow stronger mentally and physically: Salab Fan Pla is the winning strategy both in the ring and in real life battles.

The Canarian Stick Fighting, “Lucha del Garrote”, is one of the archipelago's best-known combat traditions, possibly due to its extensive participation in international events. A centuries old Martial Art that has been transmitted from generation to generation, and that has come down to us thanks among other things to the over 40 years research and rescue work carried out by Grand Master and investigator Jorge Domínguez. In its efforts to disseminate this martial and cultural heritage, the Canary Stick Fighting Federation, that is, the "Federación de Lucha del Garrote Canario" (in acronyms, FLGC), presents this second work, in which its President, Grand Master Carlos Barrera, shows part of the official program corresponding to the Third Star (3rd Dan), dedicated to Hooks or “Embuchados”. We will start with the basic hooking, the “Regatón” to our opponent’s “Burra”, the way of training them, as well as some variants and applications, and their cons. We will also see hooks with the tip and some variants, the “Volcadas de Garrote” or "Envolcadas" and their cons, hooking from below, finishing with “Zapatas” or “Trabas” (takedowns), and some hooks from the outside with "Pinzas" and "Majadas" with great effectiveness in combat. We could not resist including some hooks with change of hand since they are our favorites in combat, despite their difficulty.

1. When mounted, it is easy to pull the opponent in using the Kyusho points of the arms. 2/3. If the opponent then gets a tightly clenched position, body points are difficult to access, but head points like TW-17 can weaken their grip. 4/5. Kyusho targets always expose and weaken more points for use, like ST-9, to continue your escape or counter. 6/7. We can then gain control and pin them using other points like the Mental Nerve.

Vital Points applied to Grappling

Kyusho Vital Points applied to Grappling As Modern Martial Arts has brought Grappling into the limelight, it is imperative that the Martial Artist also prepares for this eventuality. W ith any martial endeavor, maximizing your potential while minimizing output is the quintessential goal. Kyusho assists in this goal far faster, easier and more efficiently than other concepts. Again, knowing the weaker anatomical structures of the opponent and automatic responses to them not only gives the Kyusho practitioner an edge of surprise and efficiency, but also in strategical aspects as well. From the standing clinch, the takedowns and controls… even to the submission work, every component of Grappling is prime territory for this knowledge and skill. With the wide placement of all the pressure points there is always a possible target available, so no matter what situation you have your opponent in, or worse, that they have you in, there is a solution to give you the advantage, and one that also does not give your opponent the capability to know what or where you will be targeting.

Kyusho

et’s take it to the clinch where many real fights as well as competitions start, where both fighters are standing and fighting for position, balance and advantage. As many people are aware (especially trained fighters) of throws, sweeps and sacrifice moves, they are maneuvering to feel and offset them. They have developed a natural feel for them and may even possess superior size, strength and/or endurance! The equalizer to all of these is proper knowledge and training in Kyusho. While the opponent is feeling and moving with you, their mind and intention is to look for the opportunity where you are vulnerable in

balance and/or position. They pay little attention to what or where your hands are as they seemingly pose no threat. They do not foresee that with a twist of the wrist you can target their elbows’ Golgi Tendon Body that will neurologically weaken their entire body as it moves in response to their own nervous system rather than with their control of mind and thoughts. Their body will automatically and instantly respond to you and not to them, and how valuable is that in conflict? By quickly and efficiently locking out their elbow and easily transferring their balance without their ability to control it, you have gained the entry, position or takedown… but this is only a beginning!

Kyusho Once felled, you move into perhaps a side arm bar, but they are familiar with this from practice and able to work with it, that is, until you again press L-8 on their wrist weakening their arm, sending pain into them, which alters their mindset to withdrawal or throws it into protective mode rather than mounting a counter. Before they know it they are submitting, but not from the arm bar they were last thinking about, but from the pain and dysfunction from a body or head point you have also employed. Rolling from point to point, you have not only taken charge of the physical, but also the mental, and in doing so rendered their spirit confused. This is because the attacks not only come from you, but are felt inside, causing involuntary reactions to your initiatives. The nerves of the body will yield predictable results and for the Martial Artist trained with them, it is not always the younger, faster, better conditioned individual that has an uneven advantage. They can flow from control to escape to submission by connecting a series of available targets that they can also make available and predict. Or if the opponent was skilled enough to recover and mount a counter, you can easily offset this again and again. By merely knowing where these targets are vulnerable and how the opponent will react physically to each target, you can plan a strategy, maneuvering them from position to position without letting them regain their balance, base or composure.

We have studied several of the nerve targets so far, as well as the myriad of possibilities, now there are new skills to manage and realize and in effect bring us to new levels of skill and capability by training these concepts in regard to the targets. Taking the dysfunctional aspects of each point will especially need to be considered while the opponent is entangled with you. This is because felling them with a point in such a way that they will drag you down with them needs to be avoided. How and where they will fall, roll or jump will now need more scrutiny for your safety as well as advantage. It becomes far more important now to understand which points will cause the opponent to arch back and expand their limbs as well as which ones will contract and collapse them, as they are connected to you more intensely and are struggling to gain a balance or position. This will also enable you to learn to open or close their body movements, but more importantly, how to open new targets for your use. If, for example, your opponent has a tight, two-handed hold on you, their arms and all their frontal body muscles are now condensed and bunched so that these nerve structures in them are hidden or buffered from attack. The back, head and in some cases the legs (depending on standing or ground

“In grappling, the quickness and surprise involved in properly activating a nerve is imperative.”

position), will be the only accessible points. By attacking the possible targets correctly, it will open the frontal targets for further use. This concept is a dynamic and constantly changing challenge when grappling, especially on the ground. But by sufficiently training, it becomes easier and also improves the practitioner’s skills in all prior levels of understanding. From the recognition of open and viable targets, to the ever-changing dynamics of human motion, even target accessibility, especially under stress, makes this a very intense and demanding level in our studies. This also brings another new skill very much into the forefront, that being the tactile sense and location of points. When grappling, you are not usually able to have a large window

of sight—90% of the opponent’s body will be hidden—and so it is that developing the tactile isolation of points is now brought to the forefront. As we know from prior study, the points are always in the valleys between body structures of bone, tendon and muscle. As you grapple and maintain contact with the opponent, your hands will naturally fall into these valleys. By now, learning to feel your way to the targets gives you an even more thorough knowledge and feel for them as well as improving all prior levels of study. Anytime you can enhance your understanding of any aspect in your training it will exponentially increase your capabilities and even future possibilities. Gaining this insight and skill will make all your current techniques better. Now add to this the increased pain that is imparted to the opponent as a result of using the nerves (the pain

Kyusho receptors in the body) to attack the internal mechanisms. This escalation in pain that a person is not typically exposed to is very disarming and confusing due to its unfamiliarity. This pain not only registers locally as a typical external attack, but a deeply penetrating and traveling type of pain that can even disperse to several areas inside the body. This is typical of single point manipulation, but as you get better with targeting in a grappling situation, multiple targets will also avail themselves. By utilizing multiple points, the painful feeling of electrical shock can also be sometimes induced, which can either travel in a direct path or else on some nerve combinations, shaking the entire body from within as if you stuck your finger in an electrical outlet. Now, not only is there unfamiliar pain, but for most people experiencing this sensation, there is also disbelief and even fear. When you employ these nerve attacks consistently and all over the opponent with every touch or maneuver, they begin to get apprehensive or begin to flinch at every move.

This will keep them on edge and on the defensive rather than clearly on the offensive and therefore less capable of employing their own strategy. This adds to their already new ground of unfamiliar behavior and method, giving you the advantage of surprise and lingering apprehensions in your opponent. It can, in some cases, get the opponent into such a state that every move you make is perceived by them as a Kyusho attack. But, as we know, the human body can get used to virtually anything over time and adapt to preserve its stasis. If you do continue to attack with each move on a nerve, they will eventually get used to it and adapt, and you will lose your edge and possibly turn the surprise to their advantage. So keeping the Kyusho manipulations sporadic, with broken rhythm and intensity, will keep this edge in your favor. This is a valuable key in all endeavors that you should take to heart, as Miyamoto Musashi consistently stated in his classic on martial strategy, The Book of Five Rings, “Study this well.” This technical ability to access the nerves and induce all of the

previously mentioned maladies makes submissions not only quicker and easier, but is also useful in many more unexpected positions and places. You can achieve a submission quickly through pain and dysfunction on every area of the body, it all depends on what you can get or on what position you have maneuvered your opponent into. Kyusho skill will also allow you to counter any efforts to resist locks or submissions. For example, if you were applying an Achilles tendon ankle lock, an easy way to resist this is to simply flex your foot back to tighten and stiffen the tendon so that the Golgi body and underlying nerve are now protected. However, this in turn can also be countered by attacking a point further up on the opponent’s leg causing a dysfunction and relaxation of the muscles and tendons in the entire leg, thus allowing you access to both the Golgi Body and underlying nerve… and consequentially the submission from pain. Escaping is by far one of the more important aspects of Kyusho in Grappling, when the opponent has the advantage, whether it is from a superior mounted position or from the side or rear, and strength, balance and basing are not always available. But with Kyusho, by merely pressing, poking, rubbing and even tapping points you can force the opponent into a predictable and involuntary reaction giving you a second of opportunity to maneuver to

Kyusho a better position. Through a single or string of successive shocks with their temporary dysfunctional reactions, it is possible to keep the opponent defensive and thus gain your superior position or submission. This is not to say that Kyusho is a perfect method, this will always lie in the skill and ability of the individual to use on their opponent. If your skill is far less than your opponent, the chances of you getting to the nerve points will be diminished and therefore unusable. It will always depend on the training of the individual as to whether or not they can use these new and sharper weapons. In grappling, the quickness and surprise involved in properly activating a nerve is imperative. It is different having another person attached to you when activating the targets, rather than with prior levels where you were the attached person with vibration, ballistic or compression methods. The effects of grounding and energetics now become even more important than first shown in prior levels, because now when the opponent grabs you with intention, there is an additional transfer of their body energy into yours. This not only grounds their energy, but it goes through you as well, reducing your body’s functions and possibilities.

But since strength and speed are not necessary you can reverse this intention with a single attack on an available nerve. This occurs, for example, when a person’s nerves are sharply manipulated, the impulse converges to the brain for analysis and then diverges for reflexive action to protect itself. This causes all of the energy the opponent was transferring into you to be used in contraction or expansion of these reactionary motions. Knowing key physical idiosyncrasies of the human body will add immeasurable value to your personal arsenal as well. Knowing, for example, that the more strength you use in the arms, the weaker the nerves in the head

become, is invaluable. As when your opponent grabs you, they will most assuredly use strength to secure and overwhelm you, and this action will need a tightening of the arm, shoulder, chest and other supportive muscle groups. This contraction of these muscles involves nerves to activate the muscle into this state, which in turn will weaken (making them more sensitive) the nerves of the head and neck since stretching and extra neurological activity is eminent. Now, in turn, everything has an equal and opposite reaction, so by attacking the nerves of the head, you in turn weaken the arms. Taking a simple side arm bar as an example, if your opponent grabs his arm

Kyusho with his other to fight the arm bar, this will make the points of the head very sensitive. To quickly weaken their arm and break the grip, simply press your heel to the nerve behind the hinge of the jaw (TW-17), the pain is not only excruciating, but the arm will completely weaken and release the grip. After getting comfortable with all your locks, submissions, escapes, etc., the practitioner must experience grappling to attune themselves and make the knowledge a real skill. The spontaneity and ability to flow with the opponent while seeking and targeting the nerves will take cooperation in the beginning, but eventually you will be able to succeed even while your training partner

tries to resist your attempts. Once you can comfortably get past even your expectant and resistant partners, you have honed your skills to a high degree, but as always there is more work to do. If you think this is a lifetime of study involved you are right, but by proper training it all comes naturally. You must be patient in your quest as Kyusho Grappling will escalate you to new heights of point location, acquisition and manipulation, but also enable you to attack the opponent on not just a physical level, but mental, and even weaken their spirit… all with strategy. Isn’t this the higher levels that all Martial “Artists” aspire to?

“If you think this is a lifetime of study involved you are right, but by proper training it all comes naturally.”

On Following Parte 3 By: Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

It is when we give up on the self, when we let go of our pride, that we are ready to embrace the “Truth.” Only then, can we be a slave and follow the one and only “Truth”. Yes, I said “slave”. It is due to our delusions out of pride that the powers beyond our control have enslaved us all. The greatest evil is the notion that “evil” does not exist and that we alone as individuals know what truth and goodness is, having the power to change the world as we see fit, thinking that somehow our choices and our ways are the best option free and independent of any social, external control. When in reality we are powerless to make any significant meaningful changes, and even if we did, it must first require that we know what is best for everyone (not mentioning the universe), which means we would have to be omniscient and omnipotent. There’s no way to know what is best as we cannot see the end game, we cannot see the future, not even for one second let alone learn from our past. All we can do is to tr y our best, but we will continue to repeat the same mistakes, dealing with the same problems because no matter what we do, we cannot change our human nature. No matter how great our advancements in the sciences and technologies we have not and cannot rid of suffering, misery, and our flawed nature. We are all enslaved, nothing is for free, and no one is completely free, only having limited choice or power and if you think otherwise, then you are being delusional.

he only power that we have as human beings is not freedom itself, but that we are free to choose. Even when you think you don’t have a choice, such as when a gun is pointed to your head and you are forced to take action against your will, you still have a choice. You have the choice to choose death. So, then it is not to proclaim ourselves free, but to recognize we are all slaves, yet having the power to choose our master, which should be the “Truth”. Hence, we cannot ever follow a human being, only the Truth and all humans are subject to that Truth, not because it’s convenient, pleasing, or likeable, but because it is true. After the discovery of the Truth, then all other leaders, influencers, teachers, mentors, all become mere human relationships and the most important thing is then to cultivate those relationships through greater empathy, compassion, and forgiveness, with love, which can only come about with selflessness and being selfless cannot be attained without humility. The knowledge that you are human as much or less as any other human, and that you are part of this world and not separate or above it. But then, what if we have not yet discovered the “Truth”? What are we to do? Do we not follow anyone or anything? Yes and no. One should not be quick to follow and/or judge others. One should take the time to study and strengthen one’s mind and body, to be strong and confident, to be educated and studied. However, it is wisdom one needs to make proper choices and that can only be gained through experience, age. So, we will make mistakes, make bad choices, but we cannot be in fear of the consequences or the opinion of others, but rather learn from them. We must always make the choices in order to improve, to better ourselves, to seek for understanding and truth. We must become more self-critical of ourselves than anyone else. The goal should not be to live in comfort without resistance, to avoid any conflict in fear of rejection or failure, as it is resistance and conflict which forces us to grow, change,

“We must never rely on others completely, no matter how charismatic, persuasive, or charming they may be, as the goal is not dependency but independency.”

challenging our presuppositions, prejudices, and worldviews. Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye! Matthew 7:3,5 We must never rely on others completely, no matter how charismatic, persuasive, or charming they may be, as the goal is not dependency but independency. That is also a sign of a good leader, a good teacher, also a good parent; do they teach and promote independence or dependence? It must be of your choice to follow in order to have any value, which means you must be clear minded and not open to coercion. Ultimately, whatever choices you make must be yours alone and no one else is to blame. This is even more true for us as martial artists, as warriors. Once we have given our loyalty, fidelity, to a leader then you are just as responsible and accountable as your leader. If you consider your martial arts training as a way self-improvement, seeking only to better yourself by honing and improving your skills as a martial artist, then there no need for fidelity, loyalty, and you may choose not to follow whenever you feel that the teacher has exhausted his/her ability to offer you any further knowledge. However, we (Hwa Rang Do) is a warrior art, where we emphasize on the cultivation and enrichment of our warrior ethos as a school of leadership. Therefore, our goal is to teach loyalty and the commitment and fulfillment of it. And the

essence of leadership also is then determined by how well you follow in the same way how you will be a good father is determined on how good you were as a son. As warriors, the one necessary component to being a warrior is to be unafraid to engage the enemy, which means they must face conflict, overcome resistance, and be victorious or die trying. Being a warrior does not mean absolute obedience, although that is also a requirement. As a warrior, you must be a strong independent person who has chosen to follow and not out of fear. When you feel that something is not correct and in line with the code of honor, then it is your obligation to speak up no matter what the consequences are, and surely there will be. It is with the full knowledge of the negative consequences, however extreme, that one stands up against wrongdoing which makes the act noble. On the contrary, if you run away, quit, abandon, and/or betray

without ever having spoken against what you felt was wrong and voice your opinion, then although such act might be acceptable to a civilian it is not the case as a warrior. No general, warlord, leader will commend your disobedience and more likely than not, you will be disciplined. The strength of your conviction will be determined by how much you’re willing to suffer for your protest and ultimately may result in the sacrifice of your life. The defining factor lies once again on whether you value the self, or you are selfless, whether you want to survive or you want the group to thrive. The same faults and flaws will exist with any leader, any group, any art as they are all created and comprised by human beings with all of its nature. The noble path for a warrior, a knight, or a person who lives to do right must then correct what has been wronged, not running away from it every time a disagreement or conflict rises. Therefore, without discovering the Truth, then one is confined to his/her convictions and must

“As a warrior, you must be a strong independent person who has chosen to follow and not out of fear.”

choose to fight to keep them with the last man standing to be true, surrender your convictions and live under the convictions of others, or live in a delusion of having convictions as long as it survives unchallenged. When you are poor in knowledge, you must rely on your own strength to fight your battles. When you are rich in knowledge, you can rely on the strength of others to fight your battles for you. When you are poor in strength, you must rely on your own knowledge to avoid fighting any battles. When you are rich in strength, you will fight all the battles all the time. When you are both poor in knowledge and strength, you have to rely on the mercy of others. When you are both rich in knowledge and strength, you don’t have to fight. Grand Master Taejoon Lee

Kyusho is the “Turbo” of every technique, it's that which can exponentially increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our action. Just as the turbo for the engine is part of a more complex and complete system, Kyusho is part of any Martial Art, and although it cannot replace the practitioner's technical skill, it can nevertheless integrate it. You will find detailed information on various Kyusho pressure points, with references to the anatomy of the arms, head, trunk and legs. Information on the correct location, and the principles that you must know so as to achieve predictable reactions and be able to place yourself in a clear advantage against the aggressor. The street is not Boxing, Kick-Boxing or Thai-boxing, the street is brutal. We do not have space or answers, it's not something we expect, it will be a shock! Therefore, in order to achieve the highest efficiency in risk situations, we must know and understand all the tools we have. Justo Diéguez explains in detail the basic sequences and the different defense possibilities in this distance (block defense, shoulder defense, Pensador defense ...) to gradually incorporate and combine new elements such as Pensaevo, Pensa-shoulder, Pensa-head, Pensahammer, and battering ram blow, demolishing tools and features of KFM that can be used in both defense and attack. The objective is simple: combine our tools to create a space with the opponent and react explosively entering the melee to end the fight.

In this 5th work, Sifu Salvador Sánchez presents a small sample of what is practiced at the TAOWS Academy headquarters. "We have often tried to show some of the innovations in practice and in the teaching method. And of course, we have received praise and criticism alike. For a short time, we think that the best option is to leave only for those who come to our formations and trust us the depth of practice and the details. Most probably we are not aware now of the great advance in the study of the system, but I am very sure that in a few years, many Wing Chun practitioners from different branches will "copy" These ideas to show your students and schools. Those who think about the good of their students will benefit from them without any prerogative in return. The video contains the execution and applications of Siu Nin Tao, Chum Kiu Tao, Biu Jee Tao, Muk Yak Chong, Six & Half Point Pole, Bat Jaam Dao forms, and ends with a complete and interesting report on the study tours of the Kung Fu in China, with the participation of various local teachers. 63 min.

In this work, Grand Master Réné Latosa emphasizes how to use the Latosa-Escrima concepts: balance, speed (timing and distance), power, focus (attitude) and transition, to boost all the movement aspects used in the successful execution of any offensive or defensive action. Using Latosa-Escrima concepts is important because each person is physically and mentally different, so using a system or method based on techniques may not work for all people. As in any process in Martial Arts, anything and everything can be refined through development and practice. You’re the ones who make this weapon work in an efficient and effective way. You are the ones who adapt to the situation. The priority is to make sure that you are safe and that you are going to win. Martial Arts were not developed to strike and defeat anyone, but to provide us with the strategy to win.

When most people hear the word Kyusho, or the words Pressure Points, it is one of two things that come to mind ... Self Defense or a healing modality such as Acupuncture or Massage Therapy. In each instance, they are correct. There are some who focus mostly on the self defense aspect and other whose focus is more into the healing. I personally know of several people who trained with me and became so excited about manipulating the Pressure Points for self defense that they enrolled in Acupuncture classes, Massage Classes and Chiropractic Classes. Each area of study requires extensive focus on the mechanics of the body and how the practitioner can "assist" the body into healing itself. This is not an end all be all and each patient must be accountable for their health and lifestyle habits. This video will focus on how we can use the same 5 points for both healing and self defense. This is where knowledge of anatomy, basic principles of motion, and developing a sensitive touch come into play. Pressure Points have multiple uses for both health and self defense and can be a great complement to one another. For each to be effective, the practitioner must develop a quiet, relaxed mind, which can assess each situation to hopefully bring about the result desired.

Throughout the different chapters, the key principles are revealed one by one in a clear and precise way, in the various subjects studied in Krav Maga, such as multidirectional defenses against armed and unarmed attacks. Defenses of third parties, an integral part of our system, are also included. They are presented with different completions, depending on the particular aggression situation. A section of defense against the threat of several attackers is also detailed, so that you get to know the logic of the adoption of measures; in Krav Maga we will opt in this type of dangerous situations by the principle of One against One! Finally, you will discover the use of specific exercises so as to increase the realism of your training sessions, which you can also integrate into your own courses.

One of the reasons why Markus Schinhammer has produced this DVD is to pass on the standard of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu as it was passed on to me by GM Samuel Kwok and his teachers GGM Ip Chun and GGM Ip Ching. We hope that with this DVD we will be able to help all those who wish to acquire the unique legacy and the tradition of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Combat applications of techniques from all forms, such as from Siu Nim Tao – structure and basics, Chum Kiu – footwork, turns, combinations - Chum Kiu is the key to combat, Biu Gee – will not leave the Master's house. Two-way energy – footwork – elbows – finger techniques – makeshift techniques – most effective attack techniques, Muk Yan Chong Fut – the "wooden dummy" techniques – strength in techniques – toughening up – footwork – angle work. This works also includes excerpts from the Chi Sao programme and how to use these techniques in real combat, coupled with Fan Da techniques - effective and functional techniques with no frills. We will also discuss subjects such as simultaneity, structure, footwork, strength in techniques, plus many others, in detail. Like a key that is used to unlock a door, this DVD can be used to decrypt and demonstrate the hidden applications and the power of the Ip Man Wing Chun system.
