Hi. My name is Justo Diéguez. I am the creator and founder of the KEYSI method. The difference between the KEYSI method and other systems is based on values: self-defense begins by valuing yourself, valuing who you are, and then you can start to value who the others are. Self-defense starts when you believe in yourself, when you really feel who you are, when you are really living your inner world, when you are you. It doesn't begin by wanting to be a person with bigger muscles than the rest; or because you believe to be more than others, or more intelligent; it doesn’t even begin because you have different qualities. It begins when you believe in yourself. Fighting is based on intuition, on instinct, not on technicalities. KEYSI is differentiated by a very simple way of working: While the rest of the martial arts are based in the development of the technique as an end in itself, in KEYSI we use the technique, of course, but we use it as a means, not as an end. KEYSI stands out for its simple way of working: While the rest of Martial Arts or any other system are based on the development of techniques as an end in itself, in KEYSI obviously uses technique but we use it as a means, never as an end. KEYSI's basic weapons and instruments are our natural weapons and tools: our limbs and our body in its entirety: Every part of our anatomy is liable to become a weapon. All this, combined with key elements such as body mechanics, distance, self-control, etc., give rise to this new and effective method. Justo Diéguez, its creator, presents in this video a complete sample of the Keysi method, which includes empty-hand workout, focus gloves, sticks, and numerous examples of emptyhanded self-defense situations as well as and against attacks with weapons such as sticks, knifes, including defense on the ground and in restricted spaces.

"Love is as important as food, but it doesn't feed you." “García Márquez” ot many readers know that among my earliest hobbies, it soon flourished the art of cooking. Such a needy trend pushed me at the early age of 18 years (How daring!), to begin the preparation of a book that finally saw the light in 1980. “Cocina Natural para una vida más plena” (Natural cuisine for a fuller life) arose from the project of a visionary editor, Mr. Adrián Larrosa, who in those years (and some more), headed the prestigious Spanish publishing company "Everest". A perceptive man, he foresaw before anyone else not only the imminent emergence of a new way of cooking and eating, but especially the popularity that the Japanese cuisine was on the verge of reaching. To enlighten me in such a bold and ambitious project I sought the help of two great professionals: lovely Luchi Baranda, and, especially, my Master Seishiro Funamizu, Head Chef for many years of the dean of Japanese restaurants in Madrid - the famous Donzoko -, located in Echegaray street, near by Puerta del Sol. The book's pastry and confectionary section (I must confess I've never been too keen on it), was generously contributed by a specialist: Carmen García Enguita, pioneer of so many things in Spain then and today. In those years, Japanese cuisine was the great unknown in the Western World. Chinese restaurants had invaded the streets of Spain and Europe, but few people understood the huge difference between both gastronomies. Such was our ignorance! My interest sprouted fostered by two reasons: first my bonds with the Japanese culture in general, especially with its natural food. And second, my practice of Karate and Judo. In those days, Donzoko was a small restaurant only frequented by Japanese people, a situation of which, the enormous and ill-featured José San was partly responsible. José San, who served as a Maître, received the clients in a precarious Spanish, as he did to me the first time I dared to cross the threshold on my own. "What you want?" - he mumbled with his hoarse voice - "This not Chinese! - he warned me in an unfriendly tone. Jose San (I never knew his real name), was also karateka as I found out later, but he was in Spain basically because he loved flamenco and he even had danced with the great Antonio "El Bailarín". In my Judo pants, with a pair of rubber-soled Japanese slippers and a T-shirt (the clothes that I considered in those years most suitable to confront the unbearable heats of Madrid's summer) I answered him shyly: "Yes, I know, I pupil of Yosuke Yamashita" – said I imitating his unmistakable Spanish based on infinitive forms. Master Yamashita had his Dojo right in front of the restaurant. He was, and he has been for almost 50 years,

a person of great relevance in the Japanese community of Spain. I was studying Karate with Miguel Angel Establés, who was also my teacher of Oriental Medicine and a dear friend ever since. He was one of the outstanding elements of Yamashita's Goju Kai, in which he even served as Chairman. Apparently, my explanation satisfied the haggard and ill-featured "Jose San", because he mumbled a loud growl, followed by some unintelligible interjection that I took as affirmative only after interpreting the movement of his hands. Anyway he didn't seem particularly happy to receive a beardless "Gaijin" in his territory. Jose San left, but my engagement with Donzoko lasted for years and my friendship and my learning with my dear friend Funamizu (known as "Niño" - Child - because of his youthful face) continues to this day. Invariably, every time I visited Donzoko, my Master altered what I had ordered, sending to my table new dishes which didn't appear on the Menu, about which he questioned me on my way out, enriching a little more each day my knowledge about the matter... A master is for always! In the following twenty years, Everest sold 60,000 copies of my book, now reprinted by Ediciones Librería Argentina. In this time I have had the chance of giving some courses and lectures on Japanese cuisine and natural cuisine, spaced in time, because my other obligations as the director of this magazine haven't left me much leeway, but unequivocally, I have always continued to practice my hobby in the everyday. My closest friends know well my affection for my hobby and are not few those who praise it and enjoy it. Cooking for me is a most pleasant activity. I find immense joy in celebrating life among ovens and cooking stoves. By giving pleasure and transmitting joy to my guests, I give it to myself. Their face of happiness while they taste my dishes is a more than generous payment to my efforts and daring when it comes to cooking. Over the years I have come to understand more and more the immense immaterial value of preparing food for your loved ones. I have discovered how in every detail lies the difference, as in every nuance manifests the magic of that daily alchemy that, far from being limited to sustaining the physical body, is an activity of the soul, a unique opportunity to focus here and now, ephemeral craftsmanship of the spirit, which nevertheless dresses the spirit of people much more than they think. Specially sad is contemplating how countries of magnificent culinary traditions flake out like madcaps before the absurd modes of Fast food, or elaborated "deconstructions" in sophisticated "food establishments", forum of pretenses and stupidity, where absurd bills are paid with the joy of the imbecile that cheers and celebrates the garment of the naked king. From the "99-cent store" to the "smoke sellers", the

“I find immense joy in celebrating life among ovens and cooking stoves. Their face of happiness while they taste my dishes is a more than generous payment to my efforts and daring when it comes to cooking. polarization of this sector is a huge cultural disaster, especially in countries that once were proud detainers of the famous Mediterranean diet, or with wonderful traditions such as the Japanese cuisine. But let's keep calm and satisfied because things are not going to get any better, and especially because we eat three times a day ... other people are a lot worse, with nothing to put on their tables. They say that a prime minister received a call from his cabinet saying, "Sir, I have two news, one good and one bad. Which one do you want to hear first?" The man, overwhelmed by the daily pressures of his office, asked his deputy: "Tell me the good one first" - the answer was - "Mr. Prime Minister, everybody in the country is eating shit!" Surprised, the dignitary replied: "But that will be the bad news... What is the good one?" - "No sir, that was the good one... the bad news is that soon there won't be shit for everyone!" Give yourself some joy, eat today something good and well prepared and then, when you have tasted the delights of a good meal, express your gratitude to whoever has cooked it, be it your mother, your father, your sister, a friend or even a professional cook, because a good cook is always a Master of life that gives you her or his time, her or his love and her or his attention.

Keysi by Justo Diéguez I met Justo Diéguez many years ago. A tireless seeker and a Jeet Kune Do apprentice at the time, life winged him from the depth of a mine in Spain, where in his youth he even had remained buried for several days, to the stardom in his profession of Martial Arts teacher and choreographer of fights and action scenes in films like "Batman: The Dark Knight". A long journey for someone undoubtedly marked by destiny and chosen by life to fulfill a mission. Justo is touched by that strange force that marks the difference, which, of course, doesn't mean that he didn't have to put up with the disappointments of the worldly-minded occupations, quite the contrary. Many companions fell by the way-side, in a trip in which perfidies and deceptions were not absent. Even the name KEYSI was somehow usurped by people who ignor e its origin, a histor y so peculiar, personal and Hispanic that nobody in this world could invent it. KEYSI was Justo's nickname as a child. It comes from the Spanish colloquial expression “¡QUE SÍ!” used to reaffirm an idea, with the equivalence of “Yes, it is!”,

o r “ Ye s , o f c o u r s e ! ” W h e n Justo was a small kid, he had problems pronouncing properly these two words when he spoke with his mother, and instead of saying “QUE SÍ” (pron. “KE SI”), he said “QUI SÍ”, (pron. “KI SI”). His mother tried to help him and told him he had to say “QUE - Y - SÍ”, separating both words by the Spanish conjunction “Y”

Keysi by Justo Diéguez (and) so as to emphasize the correct pronunciation, but Justo took it verbatim and since then his answer was “QUEYSI”, or “KEYSI”, that ended up becoming his nickname. Later he’d give that name to his Art. The story is so fantastic and simple that no one could invent it, and simply and sincerely, as Justo himself, places each and every person in their own place. So, if you do KEYSI you know what you are doing! Therefore and to mark the difference beyond all doubt, we bring here the first KEYSI "Original" video, because when you have an original, what do you want a copy for? I have the pleasure and the honor, after so many years tr ying, to present in this issue a long-sought video. Justo knows that well, because the first time we recorded him was almost 15 years ago! But he, always demanding with his own work, asked me to wait until he could pr epar e something to his liking. We l l . . . a t t h e e n d ever ything comes and here is that video. Enjoy it! What is KEYSI? Hi. My name is Justo DiÊguez. I am the creator and founder of the KEYSI method. The difference between the KEYSI method and other systems is based on values: self-defense begins by valuing yourself, valuing who you are, and then you start to value who are the others. Self-defense starts when you believe in yourself, when you really feel who you are, when you are really living your interior, when you are you. It doesn't begin by wanting to be a person with bigger muscles than the rest; or because you are more than others, or more intelligent; it doesn’t even begin because you have different qualities. It begins when you believe in yourself. KEYSI is differentiated by a very simple way of working: While the rest of the martial arts are based in the development of the technique as an end in itself, in KEYSI we use the technique, of course, but we use it as a means, not as an end. KEYSI was born the moment I was born. It's part of me. It's me. I am the creator and it was born in this mining town, where I am showing you a part of me because I can't run away from it, and it's the way I feel, call it luck or misfortune. I have grown up in a very dangerous environment such as mines, both for work and for way of life. I was born here, I grew up here, and it's this environment what, from my beginning in Martial Arts, transmitted me and made me believe or see in a specific way the reality of a situation of real danger, so as to realize that techniques helped me to know how to use my body, but they didn't teach me to fight. Fighting is based on intuition, on instinct, not on technicalities. You can be an intellectual, you can be intelligent, but they are two different things: you can be a very technical person; I love any Martial Art, I've learned a lot of things and I feel extremely grateful to all the Masters who have strived to make possible that Martial Arts are known to the world. I do my bit. KEYSI is my small contribution as I see it, the way I understand the world of self-defense. KEYSI's fundamental weapons and tools are our natural weapons and tools: our hands, our body itself; every part of our body becomes a weapon.

Keysi by Justo DiÊguez Any external part of our body can turn into a weapon. If I am in a situation of danger, how can I do in order that this column of wood not my enemy, but I see it as my friend? Instead of being me the one that will get hurt with the column, I am going to try that is my opponent who gets damaged. I'll use a stone, screws, a peak, I'll use whatever thing I have around me. I am going to try to recognize it so as to make that environment become part of my defense team, all right? It is not about the weapon itself but what you have in your mind. KEYSI is creativity, constant creativity. You express yourself with the technique, because your body, your body mechanics, will make you express what you do with a technique. That's expression. Our main tools are our natural tools. It's us. We are the vehicle. It's in your thinking where everything really starts; it's there where the strength of this method lies. It's in how you make the decisions and in the way you take them; and that response goes from your mind to the outer parts that are your tools: your arms, elbows, knees, legs, head, shoulders, everything becomes a tool! But it goes much further, it's not only on how turning our body into a weapon, but also the whole environment around us. We're not only talking about taking a stick and strike, but also that our mind has to be opened. Our sense of the hearing has to be completely alert, our sight has to stay vigilant; our instinct is auditory, visual and tactile. In this video that we have recorded, you will have the opportunity to see the way we work, with a screw or with a knife, independently of the weapon we are using. The important thing is how we use it. How do we turn it into a weapon? Because you can take a knife and leave it there, and see that even if you tell it to attack, the knife will not attack. In other words, the weapon is not the knife, it's us. Well, understanding the weapons in KEYSI is one of the most important factors since they are the ones that will indicate us the space / time that exists between that opponent, that weapon, and us, all right? We must keep in mind that a weapon is not defined as a stick, a knife ... weapons are everything. Any object in the space in which we are moving can become a weapon both in our favor and in favor of our opponent. What we have to understand is "the space and how to use it". It's there where the weapon dictates a space / time between attacker and defender. Weapons themselves provide us with an understanding much more related to the way in which we must act in a situation in which these tools are around. But we have to keep in mind that a weapon starts being created in our mind. It is not a definite weapon in itself. In this case we use the stick as a tool but, what is the stick really teaching us? It's teaching us to use it in a confluent way in that space / time in which we are working. We have to see a risk situation as a twosided coin. It can favor us or it can have the opposite effect and be our worst enemy. Having a weapon in our hands doesn't mean that out opponent can't reach it and use it against us. Therefore, what really teaches us to work with weapons is not only to depend on our physical tools, but also to be able to use those other tools in our environment. If you notice‌ a stick marks a distance between us and the opponent, but at the same time it covers all the distances, since it teaches us to use this space and provoke in the opponent an attitude of confidence in what he is doing, so that we can use this space and enter the distance where we are less vulnerable to the weapon and, at the same time, favors us in that situation. As we can see here, there comes a moment that is the moment of the provocation, in which we assure our space / time, while provoking the adversary's assault in order to create the emptiness that allows us to come to the hand-to-hand distance, our safest real distance, where we feel really strong, and from which we can reach our goals. Our objectives are clear: there is a weapon in between. We have to control that weapon and, if possible, make it work to our advantage. One of the KEYSI factors that help us in our work is to understand that in the street, in real situations, rules simply don't work. With technique we won't achieve our goals. Technique is the bridge that can take us to the target, but is not the target. We have to think that in a risk situation, the capacity of instinctive response has to prevail over the technique. In this case we don't understand that the street teaches us that a fight has no positioning: it can be done standing up, it may happen that you go to the ground in a thousand ways, because you stumble, because

you fall or because they push you... It has no rules, it just happens. Just as instinct, it's something that happens at a certain moment and is what will lead us to have a capacity to respond, and what makes that the sense of the fight, what we call loser and prey, changes in a thousandth of a second. That's why we have to understand that a fight on the ground is not a fight based on controls and trapping. You can reach the ground, but from the ground you have to get up right away. Why? Because a fight on the street is not always against one or two opponents. There may be many of them, even those we can't see. So we have to understand that fighting in the ground has to be something so functional, fast

Keysi by Justo DiÊguez and safe that makes us get out of that situation as soon as possible. In KEYSI we understand that ground fighting is an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time. One advantage is being able to recognize your positioning on the ground, your levers, your body mechanics, and recognizing the advantages that an opponent would have, speaking in sporting terms, to work on the ground. In KEYSI we don't work out the sport, we train to understand and develop those ground fighting skills so as to be on the ground as little as possible. Why? Because if the opponent simply grabs you while you're in the ground, you are already at disadvantage. In a fight on the street you haven't got the time, the patience or the ability to manipulate your adversary. We have to understand that our action when we are in the ground must be a very quick response to get out of a dangerous situation that is putting us at a complete disadvantage when there are one, two, three opponents... If there is an opponent that we hadn’t seen, what does our work teach us? Control of the area. Wherever we are in every moment of life, in every situation, our goal is to destroy immediately that opponent and get out of that situation as soon as possible. One of the most important bases in KEYSI is body mechanics. Body mechanics will teach us to use our tools at any distance. When we talk about short distance we are talking about fist work, elbow work, or grappling, it depends on how short is the distance we are talking about, but one of the important things that body mechanics teaches us is the use of the space. That space, for instance a train cabin, is a very small space with many elements around that are also tools that both we and our opponent can use to our own advantage. In this case, what we want to explain here is that the mechanics will solve the space problem in order to be able to explode with our best capabilities of response in such situation. In KEYSI there are no tools more or less powerful than others. Everything will depend on the distance in which we are moving, but what is true is that there is a section in KEYSI that is what really makes the difference: the work and development of the elbows within the shortest distance, which is where we really feel at ease. In this work we can see how the elbows work, how we use them, not only as a hitting tool, but to break, to open distance, to reach our target and explode with maximum power. All this thanks to our body mechanics workout. When we understand body mechanics not as an isolated part as in any other sports system in which only fists are used, or only fist-kicks. All this is very well at a sporting level. At the level of understanding the situation of a real combat or a real situation in the street, we must have the risk situation perfectly clear since our life will depend on that, so at the moment to go into action we have to know how to use the elbows, the knees and the fists in this distance.

In KEYSI we can't say "this tool" or "this part of my body" or "yes, because I raise more my leg" or "I have more flexibility so I will be more effective when fighting"; quite the opposite. KEYSI is structured so that anybody, whether male or female, has the capacity to respond in a situation of risk without necessarily having to show a great flexibility and elasticity, or the aptitude to leap in the air and perform a flying kick ... all that great power. KEYSI is not designed for sports but for risk situations, to understand that the street doesn't require extra

Keysi by Justo Diéguez skills. Here, what we are talking about is having a recognition of ourselves, be aware of our body, of our physical fitness that we obtain through our body mechanics in a study and an analysis in all the areas that can be developed in a combat, which is primarily fast, effective and functional. In the work and development of KEYSI we use focusing to be able to understand the distance and the explosion of the blow. The work of focus is very important to understand the rhythm and the distance, to understand which is the moment, or at what moment we have to get in. But where we put a lot of emphasis is in avoiding those endless choreographies or those sequences of five hundred blows, grips, knee strikes, thousand kicks ... we work on sequences of three. Of course, it doesn't mean that when we do a sequence of three there is no interrelationship with another sequence of three and in the end there are six times; although they really are three and three, which is where we are putting the emphasis. Focusing is one of our most important working tools since we can explode with them, we can make the maximum exposure of our techniques, but always taking into account that it’s giving us not only a reference point to hit, but the person who is in our focus is the one who is going to maintain a constant rhythm in our work, to which we have to react, according to the predisposition or where the focus is being directed. In this case we are seeing that there is a focus against one person, but we can transfer it directly to three or four people and, what does this type of work teach us? One very important thing: three blows is the maximum that we will be able to reach in a real situation. Could we make a thousand? Of course, but in the end it will end up being a just a choreography. An application, an explosion, an immediate capacity of response will not come from making a thousand blows but from knowing how to use those sequences or spaces of three strokes at a constant speed and explosion, and making that both the predator and the focus in this case, are capable of maintaining that rhythm, that continuity; and so we can come to understand the goals in which we are moving. All of the scenarios we create in KEYSI are structured to understand these four areas: standing or kneeling, sitting or lying down. And, of course, without overlooking the spaces in which we move in long, short, middle ... or very short distances, as well as constant the recognition of the environment. Knife is one of the most brutal weapons I know. Anybody can do a bloodbath without having ever trained with a knife. Understanding that the knife is one of the most brutal and bloody weapons with which we can find ourselves at risk, educates us to have that capacity of analysis and to understand that space / time in front of a weapon like a knife, so as not to see it like a game, but like something real. We don't believe in disarming. I personally have never seen or known anyone who is capable of disarming or taking a knife in a real combat sequence. Is it possible? Of course. There is nothing impossible. But in 99% of risk situations, a person armed with a knife will always be above an unarmed person. In spite of what they want to tell us in the movies… In KEYSI we are clear that disarming someone carrying a knife is not impossible. Can it be done? Sure. But in 99% of the cases is not achieved. A weapon like a knife has a cutting and stabbing capacity so

“KEYSI's fundamental weapons and tools are our natural weapons and tools.”

precise, so short, movements are so fast that the eye can't see them... we better don't play that game. We get to understand that in a situation of risk, with a knife, we have to know how to keep that distance if we want to save our life and, as a last resort, in the event that we have to fight against the weapon, all what we can do at that moment is to risk everything and to go to the very end. But, we are almost sure to come out with more than one cut. In KEYSI, our favorite job is the development against two opponents. Working out with two opponents not only educates us to understand the enemy, but also teaches us the way to make that this enemy becomes our friend. Understanding the environment is a key factor to reach this conclusion. A wall can be our friend or it can be our enemy. Our friend, if we know how to use it to inflict on the opponent a type of damage, a type of control against that wall. It will be our enemy when is the opponent who does that to us, of course. If we are working with two opponents we have to be clear some factors that are the part where our vision is going to have those two opponents within our visualization degree or where we are going to put those opponents online using what we call the shield. Practically in all KEYSI techniques, once you get to the hand-to-hand distance, we use this tool as one of our principles: using the opponent as a shield and make him our friend in this case. He doesn't know, of course, but we're using it to protect us from potential attacks of the other opponent. It's here where we are going to discover that this infinite quantity of blows doesn't exist. Our explosion will be of only two or three blows at the most, and they have to be in a very fast and very structured way. Our mind has to go ahead of what is happening, and our responsiveness still far more ahead, because we are making that the situation favors us. In this case, our entire environment is going to be an enemy or is a friend. One of the things we learn in KEYSI is to recognize our emotional state. We can recognize our emotional state, but we can't control it. But once we recognize our attitude, our way of reacting to situations, we have to clarify what is what prevails over this situation. If it's produced an emotional explosion in which we don't have a control of what's happening, or an analysis and an immediate action to the analysis, during which we can recognize the environment and see if there is one or more opponents in this moment, and where we are going to have the capacity of immediate reaction or action in this situation where we have to face not only the opponents but the environment How to use those opponents? How to use that environment? It will be the result of an analysis; it will not be the result of an emotional state.

Keysi by Justo DiĂŠguez If we are aware of our emotional condition we will be able to use much more effectively our ability to recognize what is happening and our environment, to take advantage of it. We have to understand that urban combat or urban struggle, the street where there are no rules, will not give us facilities of any kind and our emotional state will be far below from the waiting for something to happen. It is not the same to walk alone in the street, than to walk with your wife, your son... they are opposite, totally different, emotional states. In this case, that we are talking about the street, we are going to find that we have to react one way or another. If we lose self-control of our emotions and they are above us, the consequences can be very serious. Well, here's a small sample of what KEYSI is. It's the tip of an iceberg. I am sure you enjoyed it, but I'd like to stress that KEYSI doesn't sell

security. No, nobody can guarantee security. But there is one very important thing, something that I consider our goal and, I'm convinced, it's what keeps us strong and growing: what we really want to convey are values. Not only physical, but also ethical values, where we seek to make the person feel mentally and emotionally valued, and that all those people who come to us don't think that they come to learn to fight. Everything we are showing here is a consequence of those values. If you believe in yourself, it doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman. If you do believe in yourself the important thing is that in that moment you are you, and so you are already growing. And you're afraid of nothing. And when I talk about being afraid, I don't mean that fear disappears, fear continues to exist, it's a part of our emotions, but you already can recognize it, as you begin to recognize who you are, who your body is, how you think, how your emotional state works. You will not control fear but you will recognize it and that will make you feel stronger, it will make you feel who you are. And this selfconfidence, this credibility in yourself (not security, as I said before, we don't sell security) is what, wherever you are, will let you know that you are you, and that will make you feel good and calm and it will let you enjoy the moment.

Jeet Kune Do Seeking the inner peace and the outer peace It is understood by most martial art and combat sports practitioners that the practice helps to get to know oneself, and to discover our strengths and weaknesses to get better. But it seems impossible for others to accept that the ultimate goal of our martial quest is to achieve inner and outer peace. This peace enables us to live in harmony with the world around us. In our modern societies, in which the stress and aggressivity are an integral part of our lives, it is almost impossible to avoid being confronted to other people’s violence on a daily basis. It is imperative to find ways to be able to not respond to violence by violence. Some people practice meditation and internal martial arts in order to be calm and not to react by violence when they are aggressed verbally or physically. But by trying, with their wellness and peaceable attitude, to neutralize all attempts of conflict, some people take more and more the easy way : respond systematically to violence by violence, using their right of self-defence. They even hit first so they are not in a bad way. Of course, I am not saying we need to be in a complete non-violence, being hit without responding, and becoming a permanent victim of the societies. I am just trying to expose that if people practicing martial arts and combat sports looked more for their inner peace, it would create peace of mind, and outer peace perceptible at first glance. When we cross paths with someone in the street, if we smile, we are seen as someone weak or fearful, but it will make this unknown person happy and joyful, and it will make his day. Unfortunately, words like mine are taken for cowardice by a lot of people, because it is better for a lot of practitioners to look like warriors. Therefore, they never smile or lower their guard. For them, we always have to be ready to fight, and should never be disturbed or be belittled, etc. These are the common things that we can hear in gym nowadays, said by the multitude of experts who appeared these last years.

“In our modern societies, in which the stress and aggressivity are an integral part of our lives, it is almost impossible to avoid being confronted to other people’s violence on a daily basis”

Jeet Kune Do These experts who ride on the increasing wave of insecurity force people who are lamb, to become the wolves they will never be. The danger for these people who live in peace before starting to practice is that they are looking for reassurance, and to learn to defend themselves face to the increase of violence, but they don’t want to become someone else. Yet, they are promised invincibility and certainty to be able to defend themselves, while these experts, who are scared of their students, know pertinently that in case of aggression, their students will have no certainty to be able to reproduce what they learnt during their training. Indeed, with fear, they can just freeze and not being able to react, faced to the violence. Isn’t it better to teach them techniques to protect themselves and avoid trying to transform peaceful people into war machines ? Modern society has made us peaceful people, who don’t have the desire to fight anymore or want to be fierce warriors, for the vast majority. Time and peace, in most of modern societies, transformed people who just want to live in peace and without conflict, with anyone. Yet, stress, created by the big metropolis, cause conflicts between people, that could be avoided if we would take the time to neutralize the source of the conflict, and avoid a physical confrontation, instead of responding in an aggressive way to an external request. When someone is aggressive, by talking with him, it is often possible to calm him down, and not to aggravate the situation. Unfortunately, to leave or talk in case of verbal aggression is frowned upon. Experts pretend that we should not accept the situation passively, but respond to these requests, otherwise we may be taken for weak.

Jeet Kune Do What a good idea to risk being hurt or worse, killed, in order to keep our pride and our heads up. How many people have been pushed around or found themselves at the hospital, or at the morgue, because they wanted to remain proud faced to aggression? Violence should be absolutely necessary ; only when we don’t have any other choice to protect our life, our family’s, or the life of someone in danger. But why risk our life or our family’s lives ? Our reactions can penalize people around us. We can avoid that by talking, leaving (even running), instead of thinking of violence as the only way out. This is why, during our training, no matter our discipline, we must try to know our limits and push them ; but we should also find the inner peace that will allow us to acquire a serenity that will provoke outer peace, noticeable immediately, that few people will want to trouble. Despite the common belief, acting like a warrior will provoke more conflicts than smiling and being at peace with others. Violence still begets more violence. So why not be human and give peace to people instead of hate ? At a time when communitarianism is intensifying, why not smile at someone with another skin color, and even if the person answers with a stern look or aggressivity, the memory that this person will have from you is a smile and not a mean look. It is clear that peace does not always avoid the conflict, however, thanks to peace, we can neutralize so many stupid situations that emerge from a misunderstanding. Let’s use martial arts and combat sports to blossom, get to know ourselves on the inside, allow us to unwind, and give peace to people around us. The ultimate goal of our practice is it not to know how to protect ourselves, in order to not engage in combat ? Furthermore, in Asia, do the greatest masters not put their knowledge to serve people, to relieve their pain by massage, pharmacopoeia, etc. ? Getting to know how to defend ourselves, and how to neutralize an aggressor can serve when we achieved the inner peace. Is not it the best homage and the best acknowledgement to our discipline and our teacher(s), for this peace they brought us ?

Isn’t it better to teach them techniques to protect themselves and avoid trying to transform peaceful people into war machines?

It's frequently associated to food. • A pure and bright yellow is a call for attention. • In excess, it can have a disturbingly unsettling effect. It's very suitable for promoting products for children and for leisure. • For its effectiveness in attracting attention, it is very useful for highlighting the most important aspects of a web page. • Men usually find yellow a rather casual color, so it's not recommendable for the promotion of expensive, prestigious or specific products for men. No businessman would buy an expensive watch with a yellow strap. • Yellow is a spontaneous and variable color, so it's not suitable to suggest safety or stability. • Light yellow tends to dilute to white, so it is often convenient to use some dark edge or motif for

highlighting it. However, it’s not advisable to use a shadow because that makes it unattractive and it loses the joy turning into something sordid. • Pale yellow is dingy and represents caution, deterioration, illness and envy or jealousy. • Light yellow represents intelligence, originality and joy.

Orange Belt: • Orange combines the energy of red with the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, the bright sun and the tropic. • It represents enthusiasm, happiness, attraction, creativity, determination, success, encouragement and motivation. It is also very suitable for promoting articles aimed at children. • Light purple produces nostalgic and romantic feelings. • Dark purple evokes melancholy and sadness. Blue Belt: • Blue is the color of the sky and the sea, so it's often associated with stability and depth. • It represents loyalty, trust, wisdom, intelligence, faith, truth and the eternal Heaven. • It's considered a beneficial color for both body and mind. It slows metabolism and produces a calming effect. It is a color strongly linked to tranquility and calm. This is FSK. • In heraldry, blue color symbolizes sincerity and piety. • It's suitable for introducing products related to cleaning in general (personal, home or industrial), and everything directly related to:

- The sky (airlines, airports) - The air (parachute conditioners) - The sea (cruises, vacations and marine sports) - The water (mineral water, waterparks, spas) • It is suitable for promoting high technology or high precision products. • Unlike emotionally hot colors such as red, orange and yellow, blue is a cool color linked to intelligence and consciousness. • Blue is a typical masculine color, very well accepted by the male gender, so in general it will be a good color to associate with products for men. • Nevertheless it should be avoided in the case of foodstuff and products related to cooking, because it is an appetite suppressant. • When used together with warm colors (yellow, orange), mixture is often surprising. It may be advisable to produce impact, alteration. • Light blue is associated with health, healing, understanding, softness and tranquility. • Dark blue represents knowledge, integrity, seriousness and power.

Green belt: • Green is the color of nature par excellence. It represents harmony, growth, exuberance, fertility and freshness. This is FSK. • It has a strong emotional link with safety. That's why, in contrast to red (danger connotation), it's used in the sense of "free way" in signposting. • Dark green also has a social correspondence with money. • Green color has a great healing power. It is the most relaxing color for the human eye and it can help improve eyesight. • Green suggests stability and resistance. • Sometimes it's also associated with the lack of experience, so you can hear: "he's still very green" to describe a novice; it is used in several languages, not only in Spanish. • In heraldry green it represents growth and hope. • It is advisable to use the green color associated with medical products or medicines. • Because of its association with nature, it is ideal for promoting gardening products, rural tourism, outdoor activities or organic products.

The Column of Raúl Gutiérrez • Dull and dark green, because of its association with money, is ideal for promoting financial products, banking and economy. • The "water" green color is associated with protection and emotional healing. • Yellowish green is associated with disease, discord, cowardice and envy. • Dark green is related to ambition, greed, avarice and envy. • Olive green is the color of peace.

Brown belt: • Brown color brings people a great stability; it is used in treatments to help insecure and unstable persons, since it transmits security feelings to the human beings. This is FSK. • Though it has multiple virtues, it also possesses some negative meanings. It can harbor fears or traumatic experiences of the past. In addition, it's got a lot of sensations to transmit and curiosities that will surprise you. • As it happens with green, for example, brown is a color that has a strong meaning of nature. It has a strong presence in woods and mountains, that's why we humans have a special bond with this tonality, since it somehow awakens our most natural side. • It also means insecurity in oneself and in the others. It's a symbol of low self-esteem or lack of confidence in ourselves as persons. • In addition, it represents everything related to the autumn; along with orange, it's one of the colors that first come to our mind in those cold days of rain and wind, when the tree leaves fall to the ground around us, and we think of the warmth of our home. • According to its hue, it could be described as an ugly color, however we mustn't forget that it's very cozy when it's used to decorate a home or to paint a room that we want it to be comforting, especially in the before mentioned autumn. • In fact, it's in this season of year when brown garments are more used, and if you like to dress in brown clothes you should know that when you wear them you are transmitting other people that you are someone reflective who is not in the habit of taking decisions carelessly, but on the contrary, you are a quite thoughtful person. • And if that were not enough, you will also transmit the feeling of being a trustworthy person, since this tonality has also a meaning of responsibility, although in this particular point you should be careful, because wrongly combined with other colors, brown might suggest that the person who uses is inflexible and somehow too strict

The Column of Raúl Gutiérrez Black belt: • Black represents power, elegance, formality, death and mystery. This is FSK. • It's the most enigmatic color and is associated with fear and the unknown ("a black fiscal outlook", "black holes"...). • Black also represents authority, strength, intransigence. It is also associated with prestige and seriousness. • In heraldry, black represents pain and sorrow. • On a web page it can give an image of elegance, and increases the sense of depth and perspective. However, it is not recommended to use it as a background because it decreases readability. • Its effect of thinning people when they wear black clothes is well known. For the same reason it can help to diminish the effect of entanglement of areas of content, used as background • It's typically used in museums, galleries or online photo collections, because it highlights the rest of the colors. It contrasts nicely with bright colors. • Combined with vivid and powerful colors like orange or red, it produces an aggressive and vigorous effect.

Red belt: • Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with danger, war, energy, strength and determination, as well as passion, desire and love. Leadership, friendship. This is FSK. • It is a very intense color on an emotional level. It improves human metabolism, increases the respiratory rate and raises blood pressure. • It's highly visible, so it's often used in important notices, prohibitions and precaution calls. • Being closely related to energy, red color is well suited for advertising cars, motorbikes, energy drinks, games, sports and risky activities. • In heraldry red symbolizes vigor and courage. It is associated with joy, the bright sun and the tropic. • Light red symbolizes joy, sensuality, passion, love and sensibility. • Pink evokes romance, love and friendship. Self Defense

Self-defense Thierry Delhief is a young but nevertheless experienced professional self-defense teacher. His extensive knowledge on how security professionals must cope with their responsibilities has taken him all around the world. He’s taught, among others, the personnel in charge of Paris’ Subway security. His excellent curriculum endorses a permanent personal research to make his techniques effective in the real fight situations that his pupils must confront “out there”, as the Sergeant of “The Hill Street Blues” used to say. His work is exhaustive and impeccable. For this reason, we’ve asked him to work with us on preparing instructional videos that we are sure our readers will find very useful.

Self Defense The need to face the tough test of real life defensive action has changed the approach of many martial artists, oriented towards the efficiency of their learning and teaching work. The techniques employed by the security forces in the current state of affairs must combine apparently opposed characteristics: the protection of the citizens’ rights and the maintenance of public security. It is only the quality and talent of teachers such as Thierry Delhief that permit the professionals in security the right means of taking part in the dangerous and tense situations they have to confront every day. It’s an unflagging job that isn’t always rightly acknowledged by the co-citizens and that is only properly appreciated when the danger signals appear. From Budo International we’ve never forgotten this job and, in fact, try to bring you the best in the world, because we positively know that we Martial Artists do appreciate and learn from these experts. Thierry is exceptional and you mustn’t miss him! Professional Self Defense Everyday policemen or private security companies have to put up with more violence. The security professionals must nowadays display great preventive and defensive qualities in order to face all the delicate situations they might find in the streets or in enclosed spaces. They must be capable at all times of dissuading a potential aggressor, protecting the public or the material under their responsibility or intervening to control dangerous individuals. Thierry Delhief, officially qualified by the State in combat sports, expert in professional selfdefense and former Division Chief in the protection of the Paris Subway network, has acquired a solid operational experience during his ten years career. Always looking for human contact as a priority, he’s surrounded himself with friends and experienced collaborators. Aware that the relationship with others is enriching, he likes to share his knowledge in his own country as well as abroad. This is how in 1997, he had the idea of creating the FFBD, French Formation of the Defense Stick. This educational organization has the object of training the security professionals in personal defense and defense stick. In this first video on professional personal defense, Thierry outlines part of his technical program. In this article, he presents his organization. The novelty of the FFBD is that it gathers all the professions related to security. Policemen, military personnel and bodyguards form part of it. They all have a thing in common - they work in the streets. In the practice of their professions they might have to face all kinds of aggression. The FFBD’s aim is to teach them, at different levels, how to defend themselves and be capable of neutralizing their aggressors. This way they will be able to ensure their security while carrying out their responsibilities: turn the delinquent into the authorities. The training method of the FFBD is based on the defense stick (tonfa and telescopic cane). Its professional self-defense program is a kind of combination of different techniques practiced by groups of security professionals, combat sports, Martial Arts and military hand-to-hand. Most of our members practice or have practiced the following Martial Arts: Karate, Aikido, English Boxing, Thai Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, etc. We’ve retained the basis of each of these arts to elaborate a general training applicable in street fighting. However, this training is accessible both to people with

experience or neophytes, whatever their age or physical form. They can become efficient after a few days of training. We use the non-lethal techniques of the Martial Arts and combat sports and add professional security techniques. The particularity of the FFBD’s professional personal defense is that it is essentially tactical and strategic and is comprised within the framework of legitimate defense and weapons legislation. When a security professional detains someone he is obliged to inform the law and order officials, whether the circumstances were of legitimate defense or in detaining the author of a crime or offence. The concept developed by the FFBD is that, in

Self Defense

Self Defense order to neutralize an individual, the agents must be at least two. This is done because the security professionals won’t normally hit dangerous areas (head, throat, genitals), contrary to the delinquents who don’t follow any rules. In this case, they must establish a balance of possibilities with their companion in order to neutralize the individual. We favor lock techniques over blow techniques.

Physical Integrity The security professional must act within the limits of the law. For this reason the FFBD trainings include theoretic and practical classes. For example, tonfa training and telescopic cane against knife. The aggressor with a knife acts with the intention of killing, as in the streets. In an extreme situation, an agent could hit the aggressor on the head with his stick and kill him, since he cannot avoid him and is in a legitimate defense situation. But the professionals that have studied in our organization won’t hit anyone on the head, unless it’s completely necessary. To divide the response into ranks, we’ve divided the human body into three areas, giving each one a different color: green, orange and red. The arms and legs are in the green area, the belly and the back in the orange one and the head, neck and genitals in the red area. The automatic responses acquired in the FFBD concern the green and orange areas, but not the red. An automatic response doesn’t go beyond the spine - it isn’t a meditated act. With this method we avoid police mistakes. An individual will only think of and decide on a blow in the red area, in the case of legitimate defense. In the FFBD we teach the agents to deal punches and kicks when they are isolated and must keep their distance from one or several aggressors. We also teach them the same techniques with “empty hands”, the tonfa or with the telescopic cane. This help the pupils understand that the “form of the body is the same”. We make the same protection gestures automatic, the same entanglements, the same projections. This assimilation of the gesture permits a modulation of its use. If we have a flashlight, a set of keys or a metal detector, or if we feel that the person is not too aggressive, we will avoid the use of the defense stick and will preferably generate an empty hands situation. This is done to avoid an increase in the conflict spiral. In addition, the agents must plan the action and evaluate the fragility of whoever is facing them (older person, teenager or woman). Efficiency is our main objective. Working along excessively codified lines does not satisfy us. In our training we must conceive attacks with a knife or stick as unconventional as possible and street blows whose objective is to neutralize the aggressor on the floor, followed by a security frisk and putting on the handcuffs.

Inter-service technique The FFBD is enriched every day by the contribution of its members’ real-life experiences in putting our techniques to the test “on the street”. Policemen usually work in their own manner, police in theirs while military types follow their customary methods and private agents their. From this mix of professional techniques, we have created a sort of main stalk of a common frequency, an inter-

Self Defense

service technique. The Gendarmes have some things to teach policemen, police to the transport agents and vice versa. For example, policemen and gendarmes operate in the public arena to maintain order when they go down to the subway; they need the help of transportation security agents, who are used to this type of surroundings. Actually, in an enclosed space, with passengers around, handholds in the coaches as well as seats, the type of professional public defender and of intervention technique are very specialized. It is considerably different from those of “the street”. The methods shown in FFBD are sharpened to the outmost to conserve their unique aspects. They must function on the spot and adapt to their missions as well as to the surroundings (cities, streets, discos…). Basic movements are the ground of all our techniques. A man – even a security agent - who faces an aggressor suffers stress; he loses part of his faculties. In this situation it is always the simplest automatic movements that take over. If we hit a neophyte of Martial Arts he will close his eyes and lower his head. It’s a natural reflex. On the contrary, a boxer will look one straight in the eye and dodge. This is an automatic response learned by experience. Therefore, we develop a score of small automatic responses which people memorize to save their lives in public. For example, they develop an attitude of safeguard, including stability, protection of vital parts, notions of safe distances…

Honor commitment To follow the FFBD training, an individual has to be a security professional. Exceptionally, nevertheless, some “civilians” put forward by a member of the club are admitted. All members must sign a commitment related to honor. The FFBD enjoys an image of quality in France and is actually recognized by more than 60 municipal police, the inspector service of Paris, national police, gendarmes, the military – who come in their rightful capacity – and some private agents

(a total of about 2,000 professionals). FFBD is proud to be an official member and maker of police material and equipment. The FFBD issues a passport to all members showing different levels, up to that of professional instructor of personal defense, “tonfa”, telescopic sticks and various types of truncheons. FFBD is made up of four technical levels. The first level involves maintaining proper distances vis-à-vis different types of aggressions: feet-fists, holding defenses, floor defenses and those against a knife, a stick, ways of handling... The second level relates to the study of throws (knowing how to floor the aggressor). The third involves neutralization (blocking the movements of the aggressor on the floor to prepare to handcuff), and the fourth contemplates everything relating to tactics and professional techniques (shackling, frisking, car maneuvers, evacuation). These various levels represent more or less a year of preparation for a person who wants to become an instructor and who already has technical training in Martial Arts. FFBD has elaborated a specific teaching program for the security services and municipal police who are unable to undertake a year’s preparation and are therefore not entitled to the title of inspector, that consists in a technical aptitude certificate in the use of a defense stick. This certificate is granted after 25 learning objectives are achieved and 30 hours are dedicated to training. We find there elements of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th level in situations corresponding to particular missions and judicial frameworks. The particularity of FFBD titles is that each instructor possesses the grade of instructor for only a year. If he doesn’t return after a year, he loses the benefits of his formation and his standing as an FFBD instructor. This is also true for the different technical levels. The system permits always having up-to-the-minute instructors who are consistently abreast of the newest technical, juridical and tactical advances. And this return, of course, contributes to the enrichment of the method, thanks to the contribution of experiences “on the streets” by participants, on one hand, and, on the other, to the enhancement of the credibility of FFBD.

Combat Hapkido COMBAT HAPKIDO REINASSANCE IN EUROPE by Grandmaster John Pellegrini

My wife Trina and I just returned from a trip to Italy that combined Martial Arts business with some well deserved and very enjoyable relaxation in one of the most attractive areas of my native country.

efore you get carried away with envy at our good fortune, let me remind you that International air travel is not fun and it’s getting worse all the time. It took us 3 flights each way to get to our destination and back and NOT one of the 6 was on time! Long delays, long lay-overs, long waits to retrieve the luggage (and, until you see it, the anxiety that it did not end up in Mongolia). And did I mention the garbage that the Airlines insist on calling food? Then add to all that: getting through Passport Control, Customs and (my favorite part) the paranoid, demeaning, invasive, stupidly politically-correct Security procedures. And, I almost forgot to mention, 3 days of jet-lag after arrival and 3 days after returning home. Yes, you can get all that fun, luxury and glamour for only US$1800 each ticket. Now that I have put the trip in proper perspective, let’s look at the reason why we willingly subjected ourselves to that torture.

B

Combat Hapkido The island of Sardinia (Sardegna in Italian) is one of the most beautiful, scenic and unspoiled places in Europe. Its people are friendly and hospitable…..the food and the wine simply fabulous. Our local representative is Master Francesco Sanna who teaches a Combat Hapkido program in the city of Sassari. He had worked very hard for almost one year to organize and promote this event that included my Combat Hapkido Seminar, Trina’s women-only “TRU” Seminar, a Black Belt Graduation and Award ceremony, and a splendid banquet for students, Instructors and their families at an “agriturismo” on a vineyard in a peaceful rural area. The entire event proceeded flawlessly and was enjoyed by everyone, sharing feelings of camaraderie, friendship, respect and plenty of what Italians call “allegria”. The Martial Arts aspect of the event was intended to be much more than just a technical seminar of our System. There were important changes that had to be officially announced and formalized. The first one concerning Italy (and in fact specifically in Sardinia) where, over the last two years, some of our students had the misfortune of experiencing an extremely negative and unpleasant situation when they found out that their Instructor had issued them fake Black Belt Certificates. Every Black Belt Certificate in Combat Hapkido, anywhere in the world, must be issued by the ICHF Headquarter office and they are strictly controlled and registered. This particular Instructor had collected hundreds of euros from his students and had given them worthless pieces of paper that he had falsified. I used our visit as the opportunity to repair the damage and correct the situation. New, legitimate Certifications were issued and Master Francesco Sanna was

promoted to 4th Dan and appointed the new ICHF Technical Director for Sardinia. Additionally, our ICHF Technical Director for Rome, Master Nicola Fuschini, was promoted to 6th Dan and given authority to promote and expand the ICHF in other areas of the country. The result of these changes was renewed enthusiasm, excitement and the foundation of a future of positive growth for Combat Hapkido in Italy. The second important organizational change involved Spain, where after almost 10 years of stability, we were forced to deal with the disruption, confusion and negativity caused by the breaking away of our former National Director, who had decided to “create his own style and form his own organization. Many of his loyal students decided to follow him in his new venture, while others wanted to continue to study and

Combat Hapkido teach our internationally recognized and respected system. Some were even caught in the middle wanting to follow both or not sure which one to choose. Fortunately, one of our best and most professional Instructors in Spain had decided to remain loyal to us and continue with Combat Hapkido. Consequently, Instructor Alejandro Ribes traveled with some of his students to Sardinia to attend our seminar and renew his commitment to our organization. At the event, he successfully passed his examination and was promoted to 3rd Dan. Instructor Ribes was also appointed the new National Representative for the ICHF in Spain. Our visit to Sardinia was both very enjoyable and very productive. And, most importantly, it brought some much needed healing and cleansing to our European branches. We are strongly committed to continue offering our great System and our professional Organization to the European Martial Arts community. I believe that this historical event marks the beginning of the Renaissance of Combat Hapkido in Europe.

Combat Hapkido

Commando Krav Maga has proven popular with many other martial arts instructors around the world, from various schools, who wish to enhance their own abilities and provide a reality based fighting system to their existing students that is both accessible and dependable. “Simplicity is genius is Moni's catchphrase but this trademark humility belies the work and thought which has to be done to distill anything to its core essence. Now suitably refined, this is a system which is suitable for, and accessible to, both teachers and their students. Military and civilian sectors. The experienced and the novice. This is because, quite simply, it works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices which, if adhered to, and with a little luck, will keep you safer on the street. So maybe it's time to take what ever you know onto another level. In this new DVD, Moni Aizik teaches us in all detail how to solve various situations that can usually occur in the street: kinfe attacks, punches, threats from the back with a knife or a gun and holding our hand, various examples on the ground as knife attacks or situations in which the aggressor applies us an Armbar or a Triangle, and how to solve weapon threatening situations against third parties.

The art of Ilustrisimo is a truly refined sword art system. It is efficient, direct and functional. It is full of subtle movements, strategic positioning and superior timing. It can appear simple, but when attempted, becomes complex. But the true beauty dwell in it's effectiveness and functionality. The Kali Ilustrisimo Laban Laro drills were put together by members of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite and Master Christopher Ricketts Los Angeles and Las Vegas groups also known as Kapisanang Mandirigma. Laban Laro means to "play" or "simulate" fighting. This DVD goes over a number of techniques from the Art of Grandmaster Ilustrisimo and put into combative drills by Kapisanang Mandirigma. They were put together as an additional tool to help their own students refine, analyze and tighten their movements. Bust most of all, make them think and take them out of their comfort zone. The previous DVDs from Guro Dino Flores dealt with more range transition, intensity, impact, directness, instinct and its relationship to real time sparring. This DVD goes more into medium range - positioning, flow, analysis and timing. All are important to getting a deeper understanding of the art.

Koppo - a lethal weapon in the Middle Ages Long ago this method of attacking the bones, translated as "bone method" (Ko - bone; Ho - method - when together, "Ho" becomes "Po" and reads Koppo) became irreverent and remarkable. Thus, we will take care to highlight some characteristics of this form of expression. If you ask me what type of limb torsion or lock I believe to be the most dangerous ones, I would certainly answer: the advanced part of the Koppo. The perfect anatomical study allows us to measure the result caused by certain torsions. Unlike the other arts that use Kansetsu no GikkĹ? as an artifact, the Koppo art always emphasizes more than one twisting movement in the same place, being mostly the opposite of the first one. Its forms emphasize techniques in Kudaki, Shihi and Jime, and for this, they are the subject of special studies, which mostly translate as SaYu no Kudaki, JoGe no Kudaki and, in the case of Yubi (fingers), Take no Kudaki. Some masters presented versions in Gatami or Garami, but the modern nomenclature is not characteristic of the Koppo, being perhaps, an adaptation to the old applied forms. Thus, this modern nomenclature can represent a RYUHA, that is, a faction of the original RYU. The first stage of the Koppo studies corresponds to initial torsions, and is related to fracture methods at angles considered simple or primary. They certainly correspond to the thought taught in Shoden graduation.

Arts of Japan

THE LETHAL "BONE METHOD"

From that, we can verify that the angles undergo slight alterations regarding the distancing of Tori's body, in relation to Uke. This pretend withdrawal provides a major extension in the applied torsion, which interacts with tendons and micro-joints. Some masters today don't teach such practices, as for example in the learning for Okuden graduation, due to the risk they pose. If we observe, for example, the techniques applied on the hands and fingers, the proximal row of carpal bones, in anatomical position, and from lateral to medial, consists of the scaphoid, semilunar, pyramidal and pisiform bones. In turn, the distal row consists of the trapezium, trapezoid, capitate and hamate. On the palmar side, the carpus is concave, forming the carpal tunnel, covered by the flexor retinaculum, which is laterally attached to the scaphoid and the trapezium, and medially to the pisiform and the hamulus of the hamate bone. The importance of the carpal tunnel is that the median nerve travels through it. The carpal bones are followed by the metacarpals, 5 long miniature bones, numbered from the side face. Metacarpal heads are the distal extremities, where they articulate with the digit phalanges. The thumb has 2 phalanges, proximal and distal. The other hand digits or fingers have 3 phalanges: proximal, medial and distal. The phalanges of the thumb are shorter and wider than those of the fingers. The proximal phalanges are the longest and the distal, the shortest. In sum, such techniques have been developed in a remote epoch, seeking the ultimate goal that the fractures couldn't be mended. That is, it was a way of retiring soon a warrior... "SaYu no Kudaki", as mentioned above, is a way of breaking the bone right on the spot, twisting it to the right and to the left. The ways of positioning the hands and the techniques used are typically characteristic of the Koppo, which mostly follows a sequence of torsions, without restricting itself to a single attack. For many scholars, Koppo is related to schools and families that had an impure spirit, aimed at destruction, although we don't really know to what extent these ideas are nothing but fallacies. Such a

Arts of Japan discussion has provoked disagreements among important schools, which see the Koppo as just another art, in the context of Bugei learning. Discussions aside, the truth is that such practice should be performed with great care and under the full guidance of an experienced master. Such injuries will certainly take a long time to regenerate, and in other cases, according to an orthopedic friend, it would take years and years, with the help of surgeries, to return to the original form. Because of this danger, many masters decided to remove this part of the training schedule of their schools, leaving the Koppo practice only for the Shoden. Let's see: Human body bones vary in shape and size, the largest being the femur, which is in the thigh; the smallest, the stirrup, is in the middle ear. It's in the bones where skeletal muscles insert by means of the tendons. The function of Koppo is deconstructing all the action of the skeletal system. In addition to supporting the body, the skeleton protects the internal organs and provides support points for the fixation of muscles. It is made up of articulated bony and cartilaginous pieces, which form a system of levers moved by the muscles. Thus, we can say that the applications of the Koppo techniques require two important factors: • Knowledge of bones. • Knowledge of body energy.

The human skeleton can be divided into two parts: 1 - Axial skeleton: formed by the cranial cavity, the spine and the rib cage. 2 - Appendicular skeleton: constituted by the shoulder girdle, formed by the scapulae and clavicles; the pelvic girdle, formed by the iliac bones (of the pelvis) and the skeleton of the limbs (upper or anterior and lower or posterior). In the second case, it's the energetic action that will give Uke's body support to resist the applied techniques. The knowledge of the Tori will be the watershed so that the applied forms find the exact point of the body's fragility of the opponent and consequently, the angles of greater intensity and results. Each upper limb is composed of arm, forearm, wrist and hand. The arm bone - humerus - is articulated in the elbow with the bones of the forearm: radius and ulna. The wrist is made up of small, solid bones, the carpals. The palm is formed by the metacarpals, and the digits by the phalanges. Each lower limb consists of thigh, lower leg or crus, ankle and foot. The thigh bone, femur, is the body's longest bone. In the knee, it articulates with the two bones of the lower leg: tibia and fibula. The frontal region of the knee is protected by a small circular bone: the patella or kneecap. Small, solid bones, called tarsus, form the ankle. The sole of the foot consists of the metatarsals and the foot digits or toes by the phalanges. Such properties suppose an adaptation of the forms previously practiced in Jujutsu and Aikijujutsu, so that these too use their resources. In turn, the forms in "JoGe no Kudaki" are more used in stronger and more resilient joints, seeking to cause a fracture on the spot, from above and from below. Let's study the bone assembling and the bony ends to facilitate my explanation: The clavicle or collarbone, associated with the scapula, makes up the shoulder girdle, which links the upper limb to the axial skeleton. The shoulder girdle is articulated with the sternum and the upper limb. It has great mobility, to meet the needs of arm movement.

Arts of Japan There are 2 clavicles in the human body and resemble an italic "S" when viewed from above. They are located at the root of the neck, more specifically at the cervical thoracic junction. Its three main functions are: - To act as a support in the maintenance of the free upper limb of the trunk, so that there is maximum freedom of action. - To provide fixings for muscles. - To transmit forces from the upper member to the axial skeleton. Limbs are attached to the body by bony systems that we call "girdles". The upper one is called the thoracic or "shoulder girdle" (formed by the collarbone and the scapula or shoulder blade). The lower one is called the "pelvic girdle" and is constituted by the sacrum - a bulky bone, resulting from the fusion of five vertebrae -, by a pair of iliac bones, and by the coccyx, formed by four to six molten rudimentary vertebrae. The "shoulder girdle" supports the humerus and with it the whole arm. The "pelvic girdle" gives support to the femur and the whole leg.

Joints or junctures are the meeting place of two or more bones. Some junctures, such as those of the skull, are fixed; in them, the bones are firmly joined together. In other joints, called articulations, bones are movable and allow the skeleton to make movements.

Ligaments The bones of a joint are held in place by the ligaments, resistant cords made up of fibrous connective tissue. The ligaments are firmly attached to the membranes lining the bones.

Classification of bones Bones are classified according to their shape in: A - Long bones: have two extremities or epiphysis; the body of the bone is the diaphysis. Between the diaphysis and each epiphysis is the metaphysis. The diaphysis is made up of compact bone tissue, while the epiphysis and the metaphysis are composed of spongy bone tissue. Examples: femur, humerus. B - Short bones: have their extremities practically equivalent and are in hands and feet. They consist of spongy bone tissue. Examples: calcaneus, tarsus, carpus. C - Flat bones: they are formed by two layers of compact bone tissue, including a layer of spongy bone tissue and bone marrow. Examples: sternum, bones of the skull, bones of the scapula...

Arts of Japan As we have said, Uke's body energy will enable the action in the parts that sustain and make possible the moving of the skeleton. Let's see: Wrapping the compact bone in the diaphysis, there is a delicate membrane - the periosteum responsible for the bone thickness growth, as well as for the consolidation of the bones after fractures (bone callus). The articular surfaces are covered by cartilage. In growing bones, between the epiphysis and the diaphysis there is a disk or plaque of cartilage. This disk, called the metaphyseal (or epiphyseal) disk, is responsible for the longitudinal growth of the bone. The inside of the bones is formed by the marrow, which partly is yellow and works as deposit of lipids, and the rest, is red and gelatinous, constituting the site of formation of  blood cellular components, that is, the Haematopoiesis. Hematopoietic tissue is popularly known as "marrow". The largest amounts of hematopoietic tissue are in the pelvis bones and in the sternum. In the long bones, the bone marrow is found mainly in the epiphysis. We can deduce that the specific study of the Koppo is the only way for a logical and centered explanation of its forms. Repeating movements without a specific, detailed and deep knowledge is no use.

Many ask me if it's possible to learn Koppo from the distance, by means of videos or books. I say in a radical way: No! You need a teacher! Names, characteristics, angles, proper position of the body, reflex of the Ki in each movement, etc., are small factors that correspond to a good technique After all, to squash, as the translation applied to the term Kudaki clearly says, means to destroy internally that bone. In this case, the masters first studied all the possible bone fits and their ligaments. In this way, it would be much easier to direct the attacks. To break a bone in opposite directions, it was necessary to develop - in a different way to that practiced in Jujutsu - a localized and non-expansive force, as in the cases of the lever keys. The directed objective force destroys only the attacked target, until it affects the rest of the body. Some more characteristic schools also taught how to fracture the bone in the form of a splinter, and then pull it out of the skin, causing an even greater psychological impression. These forms are still practiced in the Seiteigata. We will explain this difference: In Jujutsu, the expansive force is widely used through methods of projections and keys on levers, as discussed above. Let's see some theories: Give me a supporting point for my lever and I will move the Earth. (Archimedes, Greek scientist) The force in lever, including applied in the martial knowledge, can be of three types: Lever - It's a bar that can turn around a supporting point. When using a shovel to move a stone, a nutshell or a confectionery clip to pick up a candy, we are using a lever.

Arts of Japan Levers can be divided into three classes. In the first class levers (inter-fixed levers), the foothold is between the point of application of the action force and that of the resistance force. An example of these techniques could be: Hiza Kata Guruma, hip movements like Koshi Nage, and leg techniques in which a point is used as a support of the force - Osoto Ashi Otoshi. In the second class levers, the point of application of the resistance force (inter-resistant levers) is between the point of the action force and the point of support. Neck strangulations and keys that strangle the elbow (according to the translation Udehiji Shime). In the third class (inter-potent levers), the action force is applied between the resistance force and the point of support. Grabbing and throwing techniques. The applied force reverberates on the spot, with the immediate goal of causing an injury, always availing of the opposite flow of the natural force of the opponent. Example: twisting the thumb and then, right after fracture, turn the injured bone like a screw. It is noteworthy that many forms applied in the Koppo, are also executed in the lower part of the human body.

“If it hurts, try to escape, but if the pain is really serious, give in”. Would you rather run the risk of breaking your arm by not tapping the floor in time? Do you think that your honor is stronger and your style superior for not having given in now that you have a broken arm?”.

While others keep to themselves or choose to share their knowledge in small doses, Manu shares professional secrets with the same naturalness he has as an individual. In this article accompanying the presentation of his latest video you will enjoy his usual direct style and his brave position on several difficult issues like the new Pride rule that allows head kicks to the opponent when he is on the floor. His new video includes innovative aspects like certain specific strengthening exercises specially designed for preparing professional fighters, as well as strengthening and endurance exercises that allow you to withstand those tremendous blows that would normally send you immediately to the floor. Feints, counters, exits, and a wonderful chapter dedicated to leg-locks – a complete arsenal for full contact lovers. At the end Manu treats us to some full-contact fights and one professional one where he finishes off his opponent in a spectacular way.

www.facebook.com/manu.garcianieto "MANU" PROFESSIONAL VALE TUDO: WHEN SHOULD I GIVE IN AND TAP THE FLOOR? I feel very proud to fight in a sport in which the fighter’s safety and honor is respected. No other form of combat allows a fighter to stop the fight the instant he feels he is in danger. In this way the individual chooses and if he thinks that he is in a submission and that he has reached his limit he can tap the floor and stop. But what happens to those tough fighters who refuse to give in and tap the floor, thus running the risk of serious injury or of ending their careers as fighters? Or what about those who boast that they have never been submitted? I think they are ignorant. Have they never been students? Did their Master never submit them in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of what they know today? If you have never given in, then you urgently need to train with some more experienced people than you. It is not dishonorable to give in because this is how you learn and everyone who really wants to learn has to go through this. Learning is progress and in order to make this progress you have to learn how to give in and how to tap the floor. That’s the law! There is only one valid question, and that is when to give in. You should give in when you have been caught in a solid submission and when you run the risk of breaking something. Each person should discover his own limits through practice and training. I’m not saying that you should give up whenever you are submitted, rather I am saying that you should remember this simple piece of advice: “If it hurts, try to escape, but if the pain is really serious, give in”. Would you rather run the risk of breaking your arm by not tapping the floor in time? Do you think that your honor is stronger and your style superior for not having given in now that you have a broken arm? Personally I don’t believe this is true. If you have to give in, do it and you can come back another day if it’s not your last fight. The majority of injuries are caused by this phenomenon: bearing the pain until it is too late. Indeed I had to learn this lesson after I broke a foot because I didn’t want to give in and I had to stop for several weeks. Protect your body and not your pride if you don’t want to be on crutches for weeks or with your arm in a sling. Your pride should help you to learn and not to get injured. When the moment arrives to give in, do it and remember that you are here to learn and enjoy.

THE "CLINCH" IN VALE TUDO If your strategy with a dangerous and precise “striker” is to direct the combat towards the floor then you will have to be patient, be very smart and be ready for the gaps that he opens so that you can go into the clinch. Most people concentrate on takedowns or hits, but some focus on the clinch. It doesn’t matter if you are a grappler defending yourself from a striker or a striker defending yourself from a grappler, you should use the same principles and rules to defend yourself. There are three parts without which there is no guarantee of a perfect clinch: the first is that you should wait until your opponent makes a mistake and opens a space and if he doesn’t then you will have to make him do so. The key is patience because if you make any crazy or unsafe moves you will leave yourself exposed to knees, elbows or punches. You

MMA

www.facebook.com/manu.garcianieto have to wait until he strikes and then the gaps will open and we can take advantage of them to close the distance. If he doesn’t make any strikes then we will have to and this will leave him with only two options: take the blows or return them. In this way we will have achieved our goal of making him open up so that we can close the distance. The second part is when you have managed to enter you should always stay stuck to your opponent with your head against his chest so that you are out of his reach. Remember that your head is harder than your fists so don’t worry if a blow hits you because he will surely hurt himself more than you. And the most important thing to remember is to always encircle him inside his arms because in this way you will have the control. You should constantly fight to get into this position because more than any other thing this is the key to controlling the clinch. Finally there are takedowns, which are the same as entries except that you do them when he makes a mistake. So, now we are in the clinch with our head on his chest and with our arms encircling him inside his arms, I hope that he will do some knee kicks and fist punches and open up a gap, so I wait for his attack, feel his energy and pull him to the floor. The most common mistakes are lack of patience and trying to force the situation. You have to be patient but when you have decided to move go in without hesitation, accepting all the consequences of his blows, doing the clinch and taking him to the floor where you can strike him as if exhaling outwards.

LEG LOCKS This is one of the sections in my third video, all the submissions are with leg-locks and you will see so many that you will end up dreaming about them. Until very recently little attention was paid to these decisive techniques even in countries like the United States and Brazil. But nowadays they have begun to be used more because the techniques of Sambo, Shooto and various forms of catch wrestling are now being imported and there is also a proliferation of “grappling without kimono” events. One of the reasons that these techniques are rarely done or taught is the level of danger and the large difference of sensitivity. When you receive an arm lock you feel pain before it breaks which gives you time to give in, however, with leg-locks the pain often comes after the break and then its too late because if you haven’t felt pain then you haven’t given in. With the recent globalization of submission fighting and Vale Tudo it is now impossible to ignore this work. Fighters like the Japanese are specialists in this type of lock and so it is important that you make time in your training schedule for these techniques and their defenses.

"ALL FOURS" THE DANGEROUS RULE The new Pride rule which allows fighters to make a penalty kick or “soccer kick” to the opponent’s head when he is on all fours is a bad rule for this sport and Martial Arts and is an unnecessary danger for fighters. For the moment the new rule of PRIDE 13 resulted in a night of monumental and electrifying knockouts. At a time when Vale Tudo is finally being recognized and is growing in popularity, when tournaments like the UFC are prospering with the blessing of the country’s athletic commissions and where the Pride in Japan is filling stadiums with more than 20.000 spectators and is one of the most viewed events on Japanese television, it is not the moment to increase the brutality of the sport. The scene of a fighter on all fours being kicked in the head and receiving a multitude of knee hits and other blows leaves this sport vulnerable to the same critics and politicians who have been trying to get rid of it. Let’s take a moment to explain exactly what I am talking about. A fighter is face down on his hands and knees, in a position where you cannot see what is coming at you and much less defend yourself from a kick to your head as if it were a football, and is then hit by a strike similar to a penalty kick in football. Sakuraba spent two weeks in hospital after having received several kicks like this in his fight with Vanderlei Silva. To see a fighter on the television being helped to his feet, his face covered in blood after having been struck in this way is a nightmare. After Renato Babalu delivered a penalty kick on Brad Kholer, this fighter went into convulsions and had to be hospitalized. Babalu could have easily finished with his opponent by applying a stranglehold with his fists. Those who support this rule argue that it obliges fighters to learn how to defend themselves from this blow and thus avoid grapplers going on all fours. Using the same logic they could or should allow blows to the

genitals, putting fingers in eyes or biting the nose so that fighters are forced to learn how to defend themselves against these attacks because in a real fight there are no rules! I and many other fighters advocate more professional Martial arts and we are against this new rule not only as spectators but also as fighters. If people want to see blood let them go to war, this on the other hand is a sport. Anyone whether he is a fighter or not could deliver a blow in that position. If you are a football player you could kick hard, my mother could also kick in this position. And what’s next? Should we kick in this position and yell “GOAL! The penalty kick is a clear threat to the health of fighters and to this sport, therefore it should not be permitted and should disappear, if not we will have to prepare ourselves for misfortune and possible deaths due to this new rule.

“Meetings with remarkable men Each of us follows his own destiny. I like to think that, at least to a certain degree, we contribute to the creation of our fate, taking advantage of the opportunities our lives offer us. Encountering people of incredible talent occurs few times in life. For some, this happens only once in a lifetime. In such moments one must do everything possible to make the occasion as useful and instructive as possible, even if he has to make some sacrifices or give up something. Texto y Fotos: Maurizio Maltese e-Mail: m.maltese@tiscali.it

Silat Some years ago, in Indonesia, I met some Masters of Silat Hindu of Bali, the last disciples of ancient Martial and esoteric traditions. I spoke of these personages in articles, books and showed their styles in didactic videos. Nevertheless, I never spoke very much about a particular person, perhaps because I still haven’t assimilated his simple yet profound teachings. This man was Master Malano of the Harimau Silat. As thin as a nail and short, even at eighty-some years old he showed unbelievable vitality. Deep cuts in his feet testified to his continuous work in the rice fields. Every day from dawn to dusk, his back bent down, by means of an obsolete form of agriculture, Master Malano managed to scrape together a living. In the evening, not a bit tired, in his house built like a palafitte (lake dwelling) at the edge of the jungle, he continued training in the style of “The Tiger of Sumatra”, also known as Silat Harimau. When he was young, Master Malano received the proper reward for his worth: he was chosen to teach in the Regional Conservatory (where traditional music and dancing are taught). Here he imparted the Silat style movements, which nowadays form part of many dances. One day during my daily visits to the Master’s home, I met three young men who, because of their clothes and unusual hats, reminded me of 19th century shepherds from the south of Italy. They came from the distant mountain district. When able, they came down to carry on a declining tradition, drowned by the new rhythms and customs. Apart from these sporadic visits, I don’t believe the Master gave lessons. This was probably because, for many years now, he was too old to teach. My first meeting with the Master seems a work of destiny: On the occasion I found myself in the west of Sumatra, in the land of the Minangkabau, searching for ancient Silat styles, similar to the Cidepok which were learned in Bali. During a trip in a bus, a series of coincidences occurred. First, I took the wrong bus that took me in the wrong direction. Then, when I realized my mistake (at a distance of 30 kilometers from the city) I got off in the middle of the road near a small town consisting of a few houses and a mosque. There I had to wait for the return bus. I almost fainted when I found out at 6 P.M. that there would be no bus until the next day. What to do? The sky was getting darker and darker, I had no hope of getting a ride to the city, spending the night there was an option that didn’t appeal to me.

www.federazioneisam.it

Silat I asked help of various people passing by, but to no avail. Finally a boy who had been on the same bus as I, approached me – probably to practice his English. I explained my problem. He said the only solution was to spend the night in one of the small town’s huts. It wasn’t a fascinating idea, but surely the most intelligent. While we were approaching his humble house, he asked me why I had come. When told I was looking for traditional Silat, he said there were two Harimau Masters and the older one was the most important in the area and perhaps in all Indonesia. I didn’t expect much since the experience of many trips had taught me that people often try to be obliging, for example, trying to give some sense to your little setback. In the Orient, in fact, simply to oblige the questioner, people always try to give an affirmative response if in the inquiry they sense a desire for an assenting answer, this, independent of the reality. If, for example, you have to inquire where a place is, you have to be careful how you form the question. This is because very few times do you get a negative since this would be rude – this even though the person addressed knows nothing about what you are talking about. In any event, now that I was in the area, it was worth a try. As night fell, we arrived to the first Master’s house. He was the young one – 70 + years old – wearing rubber boots, pruning shears in one hand and a handful of branches in the other. Introductions, followed by a rapid confabulation and an appointment for half an hour later in the older Master’s hut. We walked from the town in the early darkness and came upon a little house near the jungle. An old woman opened the door and let us in. The room, with its wooden floor covered by rugs, was practically empty. For decoration there was only a small low chair, a table and a guitar hanging on the wall. Finally, a tiny, lean old man entered the room. He looked at me cordially and

began talking to me in Minangkabau, thinking I understood the language. Tea, chatter and then a demonstration: the old people seated themselves in diametrically opposite corners of the room. Their movements were harmonic, synchronized, great. They had feline movements: some times they approached each other, studied themselves, turned around, but always watching, lowered themselves and then arose. Then, suddenly, one of them began attacking the other with punches, kicks, trying to grasp the other, and the other one stopped and deflected the blows, searching for the way to respond. The rhythm increased constantly and all of the sudden a knife appeared in the hand of one of them, passing later to the other one’s, in a constant and rapid exchange of attack, defense and disarming techniques. Sometimes Master Malano threw himself to the floor passing through the other’s legs, with incredible agility; other times instead, the action seemed to stop suddenly because a terrible throat lock trapped one. A few seconds later, he would free himself and counterattack. After a series of endless attacks and counter-attacks, they separated, reverting to their previous slow and sinuous motions, until they stopped and saluted. It was beautiful; I’d never seen anything like it. I asked Master Malano if I could learn the Harimau style. I mentioned that I had already practiced the Cidepok style, which I learned in Bali. I showed him some Jurus (brief sequence of movements) and after watching four Jurus, his eyes were shining and he said enthusiastically: Silat Marimau Sama! (like Silat Harimau). We didn’t follow any particular initiation forms or great formalities: unexpectedly the first lesson began, imitating several complex salute motions. On that distant month of August 1995, I didn’t have a camera. I hadn’t taken it with me because of my Guru in Bali, who was reluctant to its use. On this occasion I took many photos

and made notes. The lines turned into pages and the pages into notebooks, which I zealously keep and frequently examine and meditate on, discovering each time new viewpoints and details. Meanwhile, on that first evening in the Master’s house, it got completely dark. My watch showed it was 1 A.M. and awakening from the spell, I remembered my accommodation problem. I mentioned it to the boy that spoke English and he spoke with the Master,

who suggested that we talk with a man in the town who owned a truck. Half and hour later, the boy returned with the truck owner, who agreed to take me to the city for a fee. Having reached an agreement, we left the house and there, in the darkness, stood a group of twenty kids, in religious silence. They followed us to the truck and all of them, from the youngest to the oldest, boys and girls, got into the back with me; for them it was an extraordinary excursion.

Silat The following days I rented a motorcycle – thanks to which I was able to reach the Master’s house in an hour. The nice Master Malano used to wait for me at 17:00 on the street that led to his house, each day more enthusiastically. The training continued until very late in the night, pausing so that I could rest, while the “Super-grandpa” (that’s how I called him) talked, wrote, demonstrated, moved: From where did he get all that energy? I tried to talk to him (using an interpreter) of inner energy (Tenaga Dalam in Indonesian), respiratory exercises, etc… Each time, the Master told me the tiger did not need exercises and that one must concentrate on the strength and movement of the animal, intensively reflect on these and then he would only say: the tiger comes! In the successive years of my study with the Master, now with a better knowledge of the Indonesian language, as well as some Minangkabau expressions, I never managed to improve on the phrase: “the tiger comes”. Various times I tried to ask the Master if I could see the more advanced techniques and movements of his style, but the Master always responded, with a very serious expression on his face (putting the boy who interpreted in a tight spot), that it was not possible because otherwise his very action would have called the tiger. In the following years, in continuing my study of cultural anthropology, I realized that, in reality, many civilizations in different parts of the world, had in their traditions a profound sense of communion with the animals, from whom they try to get inspiration by imitating their qualities: for instance, the Jaguar men from the Amazon jungle, before undertaking a hunt, disguise themselves imitating the most important characteristics of this animal and trying to absorb the characteristics of the predator. From the Siberian people to the American Indian, communion with the chosen animal is achieved by means of a “Chamanian” (coming from “Chaman”) voyage in hallucinatory states. This state is reached with the help of special substances or by psychophysical practices that alter the state of conscience.

Silat Nevertheless, we shouldn’t think that it concerns only Asiatic or extra-European extravagancies. If we read the ancient Italian treatise on Martial Arts “Fiore di battaglia de Fiore dei liberi”, we can see that the Masters from Friuli – a North Italy region – make reference to four animals from whom man must learn qualities which improve his martial skills: the tiger’s speed, the lion’s audacity, the elephant’s strength and, lastly, the cervino-wolf’s (peculiar wolf species) prudence. The latest discoveries of the brain’s functioning, of the liberalization of the endorphin, of the importance of visualizations and identifications, have revaluated all the practices that we today denominate by the term “chamanian”. This has always made the integrationist disciples of the illustrated trend smile, as they believe exclusively in reason. An affirmation of Doctor Feldenkrais pops out

of my head. (Note: Dr. Feldenkrais was a Nuclear-physics collaborator of Nobel Curie, first black Belt of European Judo and creator of the Feldenkrais theory of the conscience of psychomotor procedures). He contended that imitating the movements and positions of the animals produces an incredible amount of energy and vitality. Any person who has tried, by means of any oriental or occidental practice, introspection senses the existence of inner energies, accessible in moments of great necessity. Nevertheless, we are not conscious of the procedure that puts us in contact with the qualities that, more often, we would like in our daily lives. Perhaps the old school of Harimau Silat is not simply an extraordinary Martial Art but a means through which the human animal gets in touch again with occult interior energies. This through the ancient teachings, which take as an example the incredible natural qualities of the tiger.

“Some years ago, in Indonesia, I met some Masters of Silat Hindu of Bali, the last disciples of ancient Martial and esoteric traditions. I spoke of these personages in articles, books and showed their styles in didactic videos. Nevertheless, I never spoke very much about a particular person, perhaps because I still haven’t assimilated his simple yet profound teachings. This man was Master Malano of the Harimau Silat.”
