The first Aldine printing of The Divine Comedy and the first Dante in Aldine “pocket book” (8vo) format, bound with the fine Aldine printing of Petrarca. ONE OF THE EARLIEST POCKET BOOKS EVER PRINTED AND THE BEGINNING OF ALDUS’ GROUNDBREAKING INTRODUCTION OF THIS NEW STYLE IN PRINTING AND PUBLISHING. ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS IN THE HISTORY OF PRINTING. With the famous Aldine anchor device on the final leaf of Petrarca. 8vo 146 mm x 95 mm, in later three-quarter brown calf over marbled boards, the spine lettered in gilt. (244ff) a1-z8 (l2 blank present) A1H4; (207ff) a2-z8, A1-C8 (A8 blank present). A well preserved copy with some interesting period marginal notations and bracketing in an antique hand, occasional mellowing or typical evidence of age. The Petrarca is complete but for the nontextual a1 introductory leaf. One leaf contains a stanza of text censored but readable. The Dante volume is complete.

RARE AND IMPORTANT AND ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS IN LITERARY AND PRINTING HISTORY. The first Aldine printing of Dante’s Divine Comedy; the first edition of Dante to appear in a more handy, portable format (all previous editions were folios). According to Brunet, this is a much soughtafter edition, and copies are difficult to find in complete and desirable condition. This book for all intents and purposes inaugurated the beginning of literary publishing by Aldus and which allowed for books to become available to the general public. The Aldine printing of Dante is a book of the greatest importance.

Bound with the Dante is a very early issue of Petrarca’s Canzoni and Sonetti. Petrarca, like Dante was one of the four greatest writers in all Italian literature, Along with Tasso and Ariosto, the four form the cornerstones of Italian literature and language.

“Dante’s theme, the greatest yet attempted in poetry, was to explain and justify the Christian cosmos through the allegory of a pilgrimage. To him comes Virgil, the symbol of philosophy, to guide him through the two lower realms of the next world, which are divided according to the classifications of the ‘Ethics’ of Aristotle. Hell is seen as an inverted cone with its point where lies Lucifer fixed in ice at the centre of the world, and the pilgrimage from it a climb to the foot of and then up the Purgatorial Mountain. Along the way Dante passes Popes, Kings and Emperors, poets, warriors and citizens of Florence, expiating the sins of their life on earth. On the summit is the Earthly Paradise where Beatrice meets them and Virgil departs. Dante is now led through the various spheres of heaven, and the poem ends with a vision of the Deity. The audacity of his theme, the success of its treatment, the beauty and majesty of his verse, have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation. Sir Richard Blackmore’s Arthurian Epic - Printed in 1695 Prince Arthur - An Heroic Poem - Admired by John Locke Early Issue - 1695 - Full Contemporary Calf 3 Blackmore, Richard, M.D. PRINCE ARTHUR. AN HEROICK POEM. In Ten Books (London: Awnsham and John Churchil, 1695) The Second Edition, corrected. Same year as the first printing. Folio (320 x 205mm), in contemporary full speckled calf, the boards with a central panel design featuring a roll tooled frame in blind using a design of tulips and with large floral cornerpieces in blind, the spine with raised bands and lined compartments, one compartment with a red morocco lettering label and with multiple rules in gilt. [xxiv], 296 pp. A very pleasing, fresh, crisp and unpressed copy in a handsome period binding. The binding very attractive and well preserved with just light aging or evidence of shelving at the extremities, hinges tight and strong, endleaves renewed to style.

EARLY ISSUE OF SIR RICHARD BLACKMORE’S EPIC POEM OF THE ARTHURIAN LEGEND. Blackmore was the personal physician to both William III and to Queen Anne, but these important duties did not stop him from being a prolific and popular writer. The author says this work, arguably his best, was written “for the greatest part in coffee-houses” during what free time and precious moments of leisure his career permitted him.

The poem begins with Arthur returning to England to claim his throne after the Saxon overthrow of Uther. It tells of Lucifer’s attempt to defeat Arthur’s purpose and serves like an analysis of the development of Christianity in Northern Europe. The final telling of the combat between Tollo and Arthur for the hand of Ethelina, and thus the control of the Kingdom is highly climactic.

The work found a great admirer in Dr. Johnson who replied to John Dennis’ biting criticism of it with by stating that Dennis was “more tedious and disgusting than the work he condemns.” Johnson would later write a “Life of Blackmore”. The work won the equal admiration of John Locke. Blackmore found a large audience with this poem, enough so that the second and third editions were all done within this same year. See DNB DNB $2850.

SCARCE, LIMITED TO ONLY 160 COPIES. A study of the genealogical tables used to decorate Boccaccio’s great mythological work, from manuscripts and the early printed editions. Genealogia deorum gentilium, known in English as On the Genealogy of the Gods of the Gentiles, is a mythography or encyclopedic compilation of the tangled family relationships of the classical pantheons of Ancient Greece and Rome, written in Latin prose in circa 1360 by the Italian author and poet Giovanni Boccaccio. The first printed edition was in Venice at the early date of 1472. By 1499, no fewer then eight editions had published, attesting to the popularity of the work.

Ernest Hatch Wilkins was a respected authority on Italian literature. His teaching career began at Amherst as an instructor of Romance languages from 1900 to 1904, and continued at Harvard, where he taught from 1906 to 1912 and again from 1947 to 1950 as a visiting lecturer on Italian literature. In 1912 he went to the University of Chicago where he was successively Associate Professor and Professor of Romance languages until his move to Oberlin in 1927. From 1923 to 1926 he served the University as Dean of its College of Arts, Literature and Science Wilkins served as Oberlin College’s seventh president from 1927 until his retirement in 1946. He authored several respected works on Dante, Petrarch and Papini. He was a corresponding member of the Accademia Della Crusca in Florence and was decorated with the Cavaliere della Corona d’Italia in 1920 for his international promotion of Petrarch and Dante. $695.

SCARCE RECORD OF CHURCHILL’S HISTORIC WORLD WAR II JOURNEYS. This is a cartographic record of the travels Churchill took as the Prime Minister in defense of Britain during the period of 1940-1945. Presented in full color are his journeys to numerous political conferences from New York to Moscow, beginning with the “Atlantic Charter” of 1941, which was the product of his meeting at sea with Roosevelt that established the general desire on both sides for a democratic, progressive post-war world. After a number of intercontinental circuits the map brings his journeys to an end at the Potsdam Conference of 1945, the historic meeting of the “Big Three,” the U.S., Britain, and Russia, to negotiate post-war treatment of Germany in terms of their demilitarization, requirement of reparations, etc. The map shows Churchill’s journey from Bordeaux to Berlin and then ultimately back to England. In addition, it also illustrates Churchill’s 1944 tours of the beaches of Normandy and the invasion coasts of Italy and Southern France. Featured at the bottom are detailed color illustrations of his traveling crafts, including the ships “King George V” and “Queen Mary” and the remarkable B.O.A.C. Flying Boat “Berwick.” This map is becoming increasingly scarce and is a visually stunning summation of the extensive efforts of Churchill to help Britain prevail during this monumental war and ultimately bring them to victory. $350.

A SCARCE BOOK AND AN IMPORTANT TRAGIC PLAY BY ONE OF THE GREATEST DRAMATISTS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Dryden had begun a work on this subject earlier, but then finished the project in conjunction with Mr. Lee. The dramatization of events a century earlier in France provided an obvious parallel with contemporary English politics. Henry III was identified with Charles II, and Monmouth with the duke. The Lord Chamberlain refused to license it until the political situation was less disturbed. This led to accusations, some serious enough that Dryden decided they deserved an answer. His Vindication of the Duke of Guise was originally intended to be prefaced to this second edition, but was instead published separately due to it length. $650.

THREE PLATES OF THE SIX ARE INSCRIBED BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. Wright began collecting Japanese woodblock prints in the late 1890s. He made his first trip to Japan in 1905 and mounted an exhibition of Hiroshige’s works at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1906.

The influence of Asian art and atheistic on Wright’s style is unmistakable.

Hiroshige (1798-1858) was a master ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He is especially known among the ukiyo-e for his dramatic landscapes, such as the wonderful view of the waterfalls offered here.

A Fine Renaissance Manuscript Example From a German Antiphonal of the 15th Century 16 [Illuminated Manuscript; Antiphonal Leaf, Renaissance Manuscript]. A LARGE LEAF FROM A GERMAN MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONAL on Vellum. (German: , Circa 15th century) Written in gothic letter in black, blue, red, gray and yellow-gold, with a very large and beautifully decorated initial capital over two inches tall, additional initials and fine penwork. Single folio leaf on vellum [15” x 10”], handsomely presented in cream mounting. Very finely preserved, very bright and very fresh and in excellent condition. $950.

A Single Leaf Speculum Historiale - 1473 Handsome Rubricated Red and Blue 17 [Incunable Leaf] Beavais, Vincent of. [A Single Leaf from Beavais’ Speculum historiale] (Strasbourg: Johann Mentelin, 1473) The page is from the second edition of this work, printed in Strasbourg by Johann Mentelin in 1473. Printed, in black ink, on both sides in double columns containing 62 lines in thick roman script. Many of the capital letters are touched in yellow ink and there are paragraph rubrics in red as well as large rubricated capitals in red and blue. The leaf is headlined XXXI on one side in red and II on the other in blue. Folio, approx 18 by 12 inches, handsomely mounted in cream boards ruled in yellow and red Single leaf. Extremely well preserved, fine and very handsome.

VERY RARE EARLY INCUNABULA BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINTERS OF THE EARLY RENAISSANCE. Vincent of Beauvais was a Dominican friar who left the monastic life and eventually became lector and chaplain to the court of the French King Louis the IX. It was under such patronage that he undertook the task of writing three huge encyclopedias which he intended to include the sum of all knowledge from the time of creation to his own present day.

The three major works were divided into the Speculum Majus, the Speculum Doctrinale and the Speculum Historiale. The last, despite its name, is not as much a historical overview as much as it is metaphysical commentary on religion, faith and other things supernatural. It is often regarded as the most personal and introspective of the three works and includes (as do the other two) pieces of poetry and music, possibly written by the author himself. Despite its many omissions and fallacies, all three sections of the Speculum were an influence and inspiration to poets and writers for centuries afterward, and was especially important to many of the Romantic writers, with Lord Byron often citing him as a primary influence. $750.

Japanese Woodcut Erotica - Shunga 12 Hand-Coloured Engraved Panels of the Ukiyo-e Type 18 [Japanese Erotica]. [WOODCUT ENGRAVINGS OF JAPANESE SHUNGA, OR EROTICA, “Pillow Book”] (Japan: , circa 1920s) Japanese Shunga of the Ukiyo-e type, executed in woodblock and handcoloured in enpon form. With twelve beautifully rendered 8.5 by 8 inch erotic woodcuts framed by gilt paper. Oblong Folio, folding Japanese accordion style creating a 10 x 5.5 inch portfolio bound in in original stiff boards covered with patterned silk. Extremely well preserved, the images all bright and pristine, the paper on which they are printed fine, the silk covered boards beautifully preserved and just a touch mellowed.

AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF JAPANESE SHUNGA, an erotic art of the Ukiyo-e style which reached its pinnacle during the Edo period. Works of this type were produced from the 17th to early 20th centuries in spite of repeated governmental attempts to suppress Shunga. Shunga has its origins in Ancient China. It is thought that Shunga were inspired by the twelve scrolls depicting the twelve sexual acts that the crown prince had to carry out as an expression of yin and yang. Several of these prints display a common Shunga theme, the exaggeration of the size of the genital organs.

The introduction of Western technologies in the later 19th and early 20th century, particularly the importation of photo-reproduction techniques, had serious consequences for Shunga. Eventually, Shunga could no longer compete with erotic photography, leading to its decline. But, it clearly provided the inspiration for the Shōwa and Heisei, the modern art known in the Western world as ‘Hentai’, which is the sexually explicit form of Manga or Anime. $4200.

Charpentier, 1882) First edition, WARMLY INSCRIBED by the author, Émile Zola to Edouard Noël, most probably the important author and critic. Noël wrote with Edmond Stoullig, “Les Annales du Theatre et de la Musique,” for 1891, which contained a comprehensive review of every new play presented at the principal Paris theatres during the past year, as well as much other interesting information. One of Zola’s plays was included in the work. 8vo, in a handsome binding by Stikeman of three-quarter deep brown morocco and marbled boards, the spine gilt ruled and stippled on raised bands and lettered in gilt in one compartment, retaining the publisher’s original front and rear wrappers of yellow paper printed in black, t.e.g.,others untrimmed.

SCARCE FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY ZOLA WITH A LARGE BOLD SIGNATURE. POT-BOUILLE (Stew Pot) is the tenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series. The novel is an indictment of the hypocritical mores of the bourgeoisie of the Second French Empire. It is set in a Parisian apartment building, a new and modern development in housing at the time. The title reflects the disparate and sometimes unpleasant elements lurking behind the building’s new and decorative façade.
