Bishop, 1600) Rare First Edition of the English translation of this seminal book by Hasan ben Muhamed el-Wazzan-ezZayyati (1485-1552), known by his Latin name Johannes Leo Africanus. Carez, Verdière and Bossange, 1825) First Edition of this important atlas of the American continents. A copy printed on thick paper, and the most rare of the issues. Beautifully illustrated with 63 double-page plates coloured by hand including 51 maps. Illustrated with fourteen line drawings and ten die-cuts by Andrew Hoyem, colours and gray backgrounds done by hand. Folio, accordion style with aluminum covers impressed with black lettering, in a hinged aluminum container with metal clasp, prospectus laid-in. $5500. 5 [Beardsley, Illus.] Pope, Alexander and [Nonesuch Press] Laver, James. THE RAPE OF THE LOCK An Heroi-Comical Poem in Five Cantos. [with,] A STITCH IN TIME; Or Pride Prevents a Fall (London: Leonard Smithers [and] Printed for the Nonesuch Press by Richard Clay and Sons., 1896 and 1927) Together two volumes. First edition with Beardsley’s illustrations and Limited edition of 1525 hand numbered copies, this copy being number 14. With the nine full page drawings by Beardsley on varnished plates plus a few smaller drawings throughout and with the “STITCH” printed on antique arches cream laid paper. 4to and small folio, publisher’s turquoise cloth with beveled edges featuring a elaborate full upper-cover decoration in gilt designed by Beardsley and with gilt lettering to the spine, the “STITCH” stitch bound into stiff paper boards wrapped in a hand-marbled paper with a cream paper label on the upper cover printed in black. $1050. 6 Berendt, John. 7 [Bible, in Latin]. BIBLIA LATINA (Basel: Joh. Amerbach, ed. Anton Koberger, 1498) Vol. I complete with the texts of Genesis /Exodus / Leviticus / Numbers / Deuteronomy /Joshua /Juith / Ruth / Regum IIII / Paralipomenon II / Esdre IIII / Tobias / Judith / Hester / Job. Printed in double column in Gothic font, a profusion of large initials with lateral extensions decorated by hand in red and blue and a profusion of smaller letters and initials decorated also by hand in red and blue. There are also: 24 magnificent engraved figures throughout including early reproductions of Noah’s Ark, The Sacrificial Alter, The Ten Commandments, The Great Menorah and The Temple of Solomon. The commentary, of significant import, is by Cardinal Hugo di Saint-Chair who was active in the early part of the 13th century and who died in 1262. Folio, ff 464 nn., in a superb contemporary binding of full blindstamped pigskin with clasps, the spine with wide raised bands, the covers blocked beautifully with full Renaissance designs. A wonderfully preserved calligraphic rendering on the inner rear board remains and is dated from 1402. Offset from the original vellum pastedown, this is an inclusion of significant import. $49500. 8 Bligh, Lieutenant William. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 7 plates of plans and charts including a fine engraved oval portrait frontispiece of Bligh. 4to, full contemporary calf, skillfully rebacked at an early date with an elegantly gilt patterned spine. $18500. 9 Brown, Dan.
