Impressively illustrated with sixty plates in colour from oils and watercolours by William L. Wyllie and additionally, with 28 black and white pictorial head or tail pieces throughout. Large 8vo, in the publisher’s original redwood coloured cloth, pictorially decorated in black and gilt in all over designs on the upper cover and in black on the spine, with gilt lettering on both upper cover and spine. A fine and beautifully preserved copy, the cloth in excellent condition with no fading, the book retains nice sharp corners and bright decorations, the

hinges are strong and tight, the textblock fresh and especially well preserved for a book that is highly prone to foxing.

FIRST EDITION. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH NICE, BRIGHT CONDITION. The work features the paintings of William Lionel Wyllie, “the most distinguished marine artist of his day.” - National Museum Royal Navy. His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and many other institutions but Wyllie is perhaps best known for his 42-foot panorama of the Battle of Trafalgar (which was unveiled by King George V) seen by about 100,000 people every year where it still hangs in the Royal Naval Museum within the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth.
